the canyons and boy were we rewarded and punished at the same time. Trolled up a
Longfin at the Carteret and read some great bait under the boat while trolling. A
couple of captains were nice enough to tip us off that yellowfin were busting the
surface in the Lindy and we decided to make the short run down there. What a great
tip it was. We went to work on the chunk around 8:00PM and made what perhaps the
single best drift of our lives with the seas being fairly calm throughout most of
the drift. We steadily caught big yellowfin with a swordie mixed in till 2:30AM
when we packed it in as the boat was full of fish and the wind picked up. We
endured what was perhaps our worst ride home from the canyon ever. We trudged
through solid 6 footers with some 8's mixed in throughout much of the ride and found
our way to the dock 7 hours later. Two great trips in row minus the ride in.

other: The YTF's bit like demonic dogs for the guys (gal) aboard the Sea Devil. The
action started quickly once anchored with a bit of a lul untill around 3:30 am when
all hell broke loose. Many, many fish were hooked and lost by the knuckleheads
fishing 60 and 40 pound outfits, WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?, just plain inconsiderate for
the other guys. I boated 5 to 80 lbs and pulled the hook on 4 or 5 others. Many
other run offs as well. Squid were vertually non existant. The few that showed their
little tenticles would have no part of the jigs.
All my fish took butters, Sar-dinos caught as well.
A most excellent crew, Capt. and boat. Too bad the mates have such poor working
conditions for cleaning the fish, oh well

North most of the AM, with incoming tide. Couldn't stay in the channel long, picked
fish on the edges just about every drift. Finally got the change around noon, wind
picked back up, still should have had a better bite. Had a nice 5 1/2 pound pool
fish, high hooks only had 4 today....way to spoiled!! Capt.Frank had excellant Blue
fishing last night. The guys played catch and release after an hour. Fish from 5 to
12 pounds. Amazing amount of Peanut Bunker around, kinda reminds me of the bait

38 Henriques. Also aboard were Joe Frasco the "witch doctor" and Stimpie
the Henriques "cabinet guy" . Looked good when we stopped for the night,
but the fish that were there weren't hungry. We had precious few shots at Squid and
when we flat lined them out a country mile... we began to get the odd runoff...
That, we figured out at about midnight with just one fish in the boat. We went back
to old school steady popcorn trail chunking and working weightless lines and finally
got them going enough to call it a catch. Total 6 fish kept 2 released and 3 others
lost. The 480 lbs of tuna that the 6 80 pounders provided us was plenty to keep the
fridge of many friends full. I'm bummed when I read these reports of keeping limits
of these big fish when boats have 6 or 7 guys on board. Who needs over 1,000 pounds
of tuna? Let's show the NMFS how much WE respect this limited resource

drifting conditions weren't all that great. Still picked at the fish with some nice
keepers and shorts coming in. Change of tide was the key again today. Started to
drift the right way, the bite was on! Several limits again including: John Autrey

needed an extra 10 minutes at the end of the day, plus the whistle fish to get'er
done! Too bad we only have 10 days left..better get out and enjoy them while you
can....just a note to some of the smaller boats who missed the etiquette class in
the boater course....Please be awear of the drifting conditions when you stop on top
of the guys working, if the drift is going OUT the channel and a boat is power
drifting, do not stop on our stern, or the downside of the drift, we will naturally
run together. Had a guy today do this, then asked me "What your backing
up" This after he stoped right on top of me. Told him I was trying to hold a

Toms and only pulled 2 yellowfin on the chunk all night. With a disappointed charter
they stuck out the trolling to try to nail a few more fish and they did. Trolling
right on the numbers we've been fishing for big-eye all week he had the wolfpack
come up and eat 5 baits including Canyon Runner 9" purple/black spreader bars,
jets, and ballyhoo. 4 big-eye came tight and the fight was on. It took the charter
close to one hour but they ended up putting all four in the boat. As the last fish
was darted Capt. Jerry dropped back a ballyhoo into the pattern and jigged it twice
and another big-eye came up and exploded on the bait and that too was put in the
boat. Four of them were from 130-140 pounds but one was close to 200!!!
August 28-29 - Capt. Phil Dulanie and Mark DeCabia had the Todd Polumbo charter down
in the South Toms Canyon and got a couple fish to the boat quick on the chunk and
thought it was going to be another memorable night. In fact it was a night to forget
as they then just pick 2 more fish the rest of the night under horrible conditions
with wind again tide and all the baits running to the bow. Up on the troll in the
morning to pull a couple more fish for the charter they struck out and came home
with only 4 yellowfin.

Toms. The hot bite of the week before never came. An early flurry gave hope but the
bite died off. Dave Wright spear headed the late late shift and added one more
tuna with 3 run offs. Hard work by everyone yeilded 6 tuna on the chunk landed and
about 5 lost. John Cuchinato was unaware of his subconcious drag adjusting habit and
tightened a spinning rod caught tuna to end up with a heart breaking snap off of the
50 lb braid. Trolling was lame with one Albacore in the deep and a nice bull the
next morning. A big school of Mahi at first light kept morale high and we put a
pile in the boat. The whole night was fished old school, in the dark with head lamps
as the water pump on the generator went out just at dark. A testament to the crew
who had a lot of fun despite the added challenge of doing it without all the
frills.
Persistence by Jim Brandt picked up one nice yellow with a butterfly on a trevala
rod. Nice way to fight tuna. 14 yr old James Mcrea went toe to toe with two yellow
sluggers and boated them both. Big improvement from the last time when the fish beat
him about the boat and we had to tie him off for fear of losing the kid. 8-0 circles
on 60 lb leader were the set up. No complaints with 7 tuna and a full cooler of
Mahi.

overnighters this week after the MA500 and got right back into the grove although it
took some time. They left the dock at 8am with the Dr. John Bednar charter and
headed to the Toms Canyon to get another shot at those big-eyes. Their shot never
came as it looks like that bite has slowed down. Trolling from Noon to 7pm they only
took only longfin. They moved down the bank towards the Carteret to look for a place
to set up for the night and all the spots were taken until they decided to drop the
hook in 600 feet of water close to the Carteret. They started the night with a slow
pick putting another longfin in the boat and 9 yellowfin by midnight. From 2am to
5am the bite picked up and they caught another 11 yellowfin. They kept 12 yellowfin
and released the rest. They were getting most of their bites on live squid that they
were catching right on the bottom. They drop down a heavily weighted string of 5
squid jigs to the bottom and just reel up slowly and are catching three or four big
12" squid a time and using those as baits. They also jigged a few of the
yellowfin as well. The ended the night with 20 yellowfin total.
August 27-28 - Capt. Mark DeBlasio and mates Tom Kelly and Ty McGowan took the Jess
Lubert and Howard Popkin charter out Sunday/Monday on his fourth overnighter in a
row and ran straight to the Carteret Canyon hoping to find the fish sliding down the
bank with the water. However, such was not the case as he did not get a bite on the
troll and by mid-night only had one yellowfin in the boat. He pulled up and ran up
the bank towards Phil and set up at in 590 feet of water and got them going. He
ended the night with 9 yellowfin in total losing a bunch. His bites came on live
squid and hammered diamond jigs.

I know this is a popular boat, but I still couldn't believe it. You've got to get

managed to catch a few snappers under six inches. I thought that this would be a
key bait. I was mistaken. Only sea robins and short fluke came on them. I must
have been doing something wrong. We started out near the tip of the hook and
everyone, including my father was into fish. Most of them were short. I didn't
catch anything on the first drift, but then I switched to a chartreuse Spro bucktail
(2 oz.), and a green teaser about 12 inches up. Most of the fluke I caught for the
next couple of drifts were on the teaser dressed with spearing or peanut bunker. In
fact, I think I caught only robins and short fluke on the buck. Standard rigs
dressed with chartreuse hair and spinners also managed some fluke, but mostly
shorts.

catch anything for our charter with those conditions. We did have a drift and
managed to pick away just about all day, shorts and some keepers with a few nice Sea
Bass mixed in. Two very nice fish, one in the AM and the second on the last drift of

Saraceno, Coopersberg, PA landed the second at 7 1/2 pounds. Capt.Frank is out this

in a large yellowfin (thanx Tom), bending another one and running out of room for
the fish, we headed back to Manasquan in a bumpy sea. Very light boat traffic in the

Dave Wright hooked him up. For the next five minutes or so the Marlin showed us why
he was boss with giant leaps and end up runnning parallel to us 30 yards off. We
were not worthy and he broke off. The night chunk bite came on 15 minutes after
lines in. We found a nice thermocline and some bait. A drift of the wall produced
a non-stop tuna carnival that lasted till our limit was met at 1 pm. With 15 fish on
ice, we radioed another boat to take over our slick and we headed in. We had doubles
and triples non-stop and easily broke off more than we landed. 6-0 and 7-0 circles
on 60 and 80 lb leader, baited with sardines or live squid were our offerings and
the tuna gods were pleased. The fish marked at about 55 feet and stayed there. As
we got into the Toms, we radioed a long liner who asked our water temp. We replied
77.7. He said those are lucky numbers and he was right. This trip followed up last
weeks cooler packing, rod bending extravaganza. Let's hope it keeps up....

the Neil Eschenbrenner charter out Monday to Tuesday. Leaving the dock at 2:30pm
they ran right to the 100-Square of the Hudson and set up for the night bite. They
had fish on immediately deploying sardines, live squid, butters and on hammered
diamond jigs. Fishing in 600 feet water they had fish on the entire time from 10pm
to 2pm putting 10 fish in the boat and losing a bunch. After 2pm the fish came on
real strong and they had non-stop action filling the boat with 18 fish and releasing
19 for a total catch of 37 yellowfin. These fish are all big in the 70-90 pound
range and we are taking them on 60 and 80 pound flouro with 12/0 circle hooks and
the our smaller 6 and 8 oz hammered diamond jigs with both treble hooks on the
working rods and circle hooks on the rods left in the rigger for the night.
The real excitement for the night came at 4:30am when a 700+ pound mako bite a 70
pound yellowfin in half right at the boat. The crew teased the mako with the other
half of the yellowfin for 5 minutes right at the back of the boat until a suitable
shark rig was ready. They then pulled the half tuna out of the water cut off a piece
and feed it to the mako on a Penn International 50VSW. The mako, which was easily as
long as the width of the 55' Hooked Up 2 (which is 12 foot wide at the transom)
quickly engulfed the chunk and the fight was on. 1 hour into the battle with
daylight upon them but also rough seas the mako somehow parted the 275# wire and the
fight was over. Mate Tom Kelly caught a 688# Mako last year in California and he
guarantees that this one was much bigger. We'll go with 700+ as a conservative
number but it doesn't really matter as we did not come close to getting her. In
fact, Mark and I talked about it afterwords and in the end it is better to let her
swim away free anyway and breed as what the heck was he going to do with 700 pounds
of mako when he got back to the dock with only 2 hours on land before turning right
around and going back out for another overnighter. It would have been nice to catch
her but it is just a nice, if not more, that she is still out there.

Brian Benson charter out on the Canyon Runner Monday to Tuesday. Leaving the dock at
2:30pm they ran right to the 100-Square of the Hudson and set up for the night bite.
They had fish immediately on sardines, live squid and a ton on hammered diamond
jigs. Fishing in 600 feet water they had fish on the entire time from 10pm to 1pm
but then when the wind came up they swung into the deep and sitting at 675 feet of
water they did not get a bite. They moved back up on the bank in 600 feet and
immediately got into yellowfin again. These fish are all big in the 70-90 pound
range and we are taking them on 60 and 80 pound flouro with 12/0 circle hooks and
the our smaller 6 and 8 oz hammered diamond jigs with both treble hooks on the

from ASA Apple. They waited at the dock for the wind to stop blowing and ran right
to Lindenchol. Leaving late on Saturday and going out slow due to the remaining
swells left over they arrived just before night fall and dropped the hook in 400
feet of water settling back in 450 feet. They had a quick bite immediately putting a
nice 70 pound yellowfin in the boat but did not get another shot until 5am. At 5am
just before pulling the hook they put a 40-pounder in the boat and then the
yellowfin came under the boat in plain sight. In the next 15 minutes they were able
to put another 5 nice yellowfin in the boat on live squid and one a jig. They pulled
the hook at 6am and came right home.
Sunday/Monday - Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the Joe Terranova charter out on Sunday to
Monday and ran to the Hudson Canyon. Capt Mark and Adam noted that the bite down in
the Linden was just not that great all around (while Phil had 7 yellowfin 8 other
boats caught nothing), there were reports of boats doing well in the Dip and the
same water in the Dip was just offshore of the Hudson so the decision was made to
head that way. On his way into the Hudson he heard of a slow pick at the tip and ran
up that way only to watch a couple fish caught but not on his boat. He ran down to
the east elbow and trolled out to the edge and dropped in for the night bite but not
before releasing a nice white marlin that ate a ballyhoo. He picked a few yellowfin
up unitl 2:30am when it broke wide open. Sardines and live squid on 80 pound flouro
accounted for many of the fish but so too did our Canyon Runner hammered jigs with
heavy duty swivels and 4X strength treble hooks - taking over 8 of the yellowfin. He
finished the night 21 for 35 and many of the yellowfin were in the 70 pound class or
a little better. He was on his way home at first light.
Sunday/Monday - Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia with mate Mike Zajac took
the Jim Kelly charter out to the Hudson as the bite in the Lindenchol was not as
great as expected and they figured the water on the SAT shots looked good so off
they went. They pulled into the Tip in on a very slow pick on the troll and caught
nothing. They trolled down the west wall without a touch and set up at 26176/43075
for the night bite. They picked a fish an hour putting one 52" sword in the
boat and releasing a barely legal one and also boated 2 yellowfin around 80 pounds.
However, after mid-night they did not get another touch. When Capt. Mark on the HU2
got them going thick around 3:30am they pulled the hook and ran over to the
100-square but missed out on the bite only missing one yellowfin on the jig when the
hook pulled.

Yesterdays action (for us) was nothing to talk about. Caught some fish in the AM,

change it ran like hell. Tangles, not too many fish in the deep made for a very
tough day. The afternoon trip with Capt. Frank was a different story...anchored up
and had a very nice catch of Bluefish. Pretty much non-stop action on 5 to 14 pound
fish. "Big John" finally won a pool with a 14 pounder, the night before 16

limit catch and a 14 1/2 pound pool fish.......Today we had Gary Perino and the

other: Started out the morning fluke fishing the Ambrose chanel in 50 ft and got
only a couple short fluke. Moved to deeper water when tide started going and
repeated our drift 20 times for fluke on every drift with 6 keepers. After the tide
stopped we trolled up a bonito on a drail/clark spoon on our way to a lumpy bottom
for sea bass. On our first drop we got a porgy, fluke and a jumbo 4.5 pound sea
bass. Ended there with a dozen keeper sea bass. two jumbos between 4.2 - 4.5
pounds. Total for the day was 60-80 fluke(8 keepers), 1 bonito, 12 keeper sea bass.
Seas were perfect on way back to our dock.

other: Started the day off in the channel...still had some incoming with the wind
against (naturally). Fished a few hard pieces of bottom and picked away waiting for
the change. Still a huge roll from yesterday. Got the change, started to fly! Spend
the better part of the day at 2 knots..finished up at Sandy Hook channel, nice drift
1.2 knots..a few short fish, nothing like the fishing we had there on Thursday. Back
hurts, legs are still wobeling from the past 2 days!! High hook had 5 keepers, small
pool fish 3 pounds, and a few customers with none. I'm sure the swell and all the
runoff didn't help. Chartered Monday-Tuesday Friday and Saturday this
week.....capt.ron

other: Capt. Mark DeBlasio and mate Eddie Farrel took the Bob Petro charter out to
sneak in an overnighter before the blow Thursday to Friday and ran right to the
northeast corner of the Lindenchol and dropped the hook. They chunked hard all night
without a touch until 2:30am when the fish came on. Jigging with hammered diamond
jigs with trebles and baiting them on sardines and live squid put yellowfin on the
decks. They fought over 25 yellowfin putting 14 in the boat. All the yellowfin were
between 60-70 pounds. They are on there way home at first light.
This trip was Eddie Farrel’s last trip of the 2007 season as he is off to Duke
University for his masters in Marine Biology – we like our Canyon Runner members to
be well educated! It also may be the last trip of his life as he just recently got
engaged. Good luck on both accounts Eddie – you will be missed!!!!

other: Had a good morning bite today, despite the conditions. Hard outgoing tide
into an easterly wind, the breeze actually slowed the drift to where we could fish
the channel. Decent action until the current ran too hard, got way too rolley.
Looked over a couple area's waiting for the change, or at least slack, to come back
to the channel. Finished up the day with a drift in the bay and a very good catch of
keepers. Pool fish 5.3 pounds. Weather's looking shakey for tomorrow. Chartered

other: Ran out to where we hit fish sunday and had fish on instantly. First fish on
deck was a 5lb fluke. Figured we would catch some more big fish but that was the
only big one of the day. Ended with 20 fish for 3 guys today, mostly 20-21"
fish. Not a bad day for only fishing 4 hours. Left the fish biting instead of
trying for our limit, seas got too big and it just wasn't worth enduring those
conditions when we already had a ton of fish in the box. Will be out again over the
weekend.

we started at the Farms but there was no bite. We decided to switch over to some
fluking back up in the Channels. Had a few shorts and a couple keepers before the
drift picked up. We made a move to the Sandy Hook Channel and on the way came across
a large school of nice blues and proceeded to catch all the blues the charter
wanted.

today was a different story. We had a brisk SSW wind and a 1 knot drift for most of
the day. Working in 45 to 60 ft. the 5 man charter had over 50 bites and put 24
keeper Fluke up to 4 lbs. in the box. Along with the Fluke 16 Seabass were also
caught. The closing of the Fluke season on Sept. 10 is fast approaching. If you want

other: Was looking a little bleak this morning with all the rain and lightning going
on..had 3 customers till around 7AM, ended up with a nice group of guys. Fishing was
good again. Had the outgoing and a breeze for a pretty good drift. Had to fish with
8's and 10's but it was worth it. Few limits for the guys who work their butts off,
(like my dad again). Nice fish but not a large pool fish today...3 1/2 pounds. Had
to leave the area when the tide changed..couldn't hold with 14 ounces. Found some
fish between the channels to finish out the day. Bunch of Charters next week, Monday

way up to the rough bottom off Long Branch. It was not a very exciting day as a
total lack of wind and no drift had the boat standing still for most of the day. The
charter picked away at the Seabass on the rough bottom and landed over 50. They kept
21 keepers and released the rest. As for Fluke over 25 shorts were released with 3
going into the fish box. Paul, the charter missed you and could have used your help.

perfect drift, lots of action. More keepers than shorts along with a few limits.
Fish up to 7 pounds, with the average going 2 to 4.
Had a little lull through slack with a ton of Sea Robbins taking over. Once we got
the incoming and it started to move, the bite turned back on.
Pool fish was caught by Paul Smitko, Vernon N.J., a very nice 7 pounder. Once again
the Sr. Captain gave his Fluke lessons, catching his limit and then some!! Hot as
hell, finally got nice when the breeze picked up late in the afternoon...a little
too late though! Capt.ron

a short fluke and skate caught. watched a Thresher shark chase a pod of bonito
around. Couldn't hook the Bonito or the Thresher. Ran inshore off of sea Girt. Had a
steady pick of Fluke, the majority were keepers. caught my limit in two drifts.
Played catch and release the rest of the day. released atleast another limit and a
half. Ran into the river catch the top of the tide. worked a rattletrap on the
channels off the west side of the rte 35 bridge. Caught and released 3 fluke of
19" plus and a small sea robin on a rattetrap. Loads of small spearing in the
clear river water. decided to go look for weakies where I found them on Monday. Got
to the mouth of the canal and there was a distinct color change. Saw some splashes
and soon had a double header of bluefish on. Caught blues, mostly double headers for
about 45 minutes on small shad darts. it was nice to be able to call others into the
fish. saw a lot of nice fluke boated next to me out in the ocean. All the fish were
spitting up small crabs. Yellow and white feathered rigs seemed to be the preference
today. A fantastic week of inshore fishing so far!!! I miss fishing during the
