Angler Name : Ed Gillin
E-Mail : edgillin@yahoo.com
Boat Name:
Date Fished: 9/30/99
Location: Ocean City Beach
Fishing Method: Fly rod
Specie: Weakfish
Size: 14"
Bait or Lure: fly
Water Depth: 4
Water Temp.: 69
Information : I fished low tide last nite off the jetty west winds were light. I saw no bait only some very small silversides. No mullet in sight. I thought the cold front would push some out of the bay and move some bass in. 4 days of looking for bait in the wash and no bass. I did manage to catch a small weakfish and blue. Another angler had a bass roll on his plug but that was hit. The water has been coffee color for the last couple days and it was getting kind of old. Oh well, it is only the beginning.

Boat Name: Atlantic Star
Date Fished: 09/29
Location: Sandy Hook (outside along the beach)
Fishing Method: drift
Specie: Fluke
Size: 17 to 19 or so
Bait or Lure: live bunker/fluke belly with spearing
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Even with a fast drift most of the morning, the eight paying customers on the half day Atlantic Star landed 35 keeper fluke. Not too bad for 3 hours fishing time. I got three keepers, 1 throw back and about 15 sea robins. Although there were no biiiiiig fish, the ratio of keepers to shorts was about 2 or 3 to 1. Get em before there gone. Tight lines.

Boat Name: Queen Mary
Date Fished: 9/29/99
Location: Gulf Trade wreck
Fishing Method: Anchor, chum and jig
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 19 in. to 26 in.
Bait or Lure: A17 or A27 jig
Water Depth: ?
Water Temp.: ?
Information : Because of the poor action at the Mud Buoy the previous day, Capt. John Bracket decided to explore the areas to the SE instead. First stop was a brief drift just outside the inlet with 1 false albacore boated on a jig. then it was on to Manasquan Ridge where we circled but did not stop because of insufficient readings. Next stop was Southeast Lump with the same result as Manasquan Ridge. Next was Tolten Lump where we anchored and chummed for awhile, but only 1 fish was hooked and lost. Then it was on to a wreck SSW of Tolten Lump (I believe it was the Gulf Trade wreck). After anchoring, it was "Fish ON!" all around the boat, as Bluefish hit jigs on every cast for quite awhile. Of course there were many smart fish that threw the jigs at the surface, but everyone had enough fish by the time the blitz reduced to an ocassional pick. I landed 7, kept 6, and hooked, played and lost at least twice as many. BTW we were the only boat within sight at any of the spots mentioned above.

Water Depth: 45-65
Water Temp.: 60's
Information : Started out at the Harvey Cedars Lump, looking for the Fluke that are normally here in the fall, and found Croakers. Moved to areas off the inlet in 50-60' and found some Fluke and Weakfish, but not what we expected. Went home with 10. Anyone have any luck in this area ?

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: Sept. 28-29
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: up to 70 pounds
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 500
Water Temp.: 68
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and Mate Scott Lisowski had the Dr. John Bedner charter from Cherry Hill, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Tuesday to Wednesday. In what has been an outstanding Canyon Season for the Canyon Runner (400+ Tuna and 14 Billfish) this trip was by far the best. Arriving at the edge at 5:00 p.m. we had the fish on top breaking water and with not a ripple on the Ocean nor a puff of wind we decided to drift. Great decision! We had fish on immediately and limited out with 18 Yellowfin on our first drift before Sunset. Once is got dark we continued to pull fish as soon as the baits hit the water and throughout the night released another 30 fish during our second drift. In total the charter and crew caught 48 Yellowfin and what made it even better was the fish were not the small 30 to 50 pounders but were all between 50 and 70 pounds with some pushing 80 pounds.

Boat Name: Queen Mary
Date Fished: 09/28/1999
Location: Point Pleasant, NJ
Fishing Method: Bait/Jigs
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 8lbs. - 16lbs.
Bait or Lure: Peanut Bunker
Water Depth: 60' - 100'
Water Temp.: 70
Information : The Blues weren't biting at the Mud Bouy or at a second location due East. With about 10 people aboard, about 14 fish were landed all day. The Blues were large. When they bit, it wasn't a crash landing, more of a gradual, let-them-take-it thing. The ocean still isn't completely straightened out. The water is still slightly discoloured, the tide and current are still not lining up. The Queen Mary crew did a fine job keeping a steady slick and offering tips and a variety of bait. I have no complaints with the Captain and crew. Indeed, we didn't screw around that long at the Mud Buoy when it wasn't going. However, all the prayers in the world don't work if the fish simply aren't feeding.

Bernie showed us how to land 50lb tuna on a spinning outfit,he did 4 times.Dave, who missed our last trip landed a 120lb Big Eye.After that Dave was whupped worse than his last affair, yes fans that fish turned Dave into a girlieman. So he tried to keep his line out of water, but the razing got to him,so everytime he had a runoff, you could hear him say "oh no not again"! What a girlieman.Total tally 50 yellows,1 longfin,3 mahi and 1 BigEye WHEW! this is not a miscount nor a typo.

Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: up to 70 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Butterfish chunks & Squid
Water Depth: 375 ft.
Water Temp.: 68
Information : Capt. Paul Regula had the Bounty Hunter out of Clarks Landing Marina out to the Hudson Canyon for an overnight chunking trip with the Dan Olszak charter, and just when you think it can't get any better, it gets better. After the weekends limit catch of Yellowfin in 4 hours, todays charter did it in 3. We anchored in 375 ft. of 68 degree water on the West wall at 7PM. The first 20 minutes produced 1, 60 lb. Yellowfin. Then the seasons most intense non-stop bite began with 2 and 3 fish on at a time and no let up in the action. We had over 30 hook-ups with 21 Yellowfin up to 70 lbs. boated by 10PM. With another limit catch on board we decided to leave for home at 11PM with a very tired but very happy charter.

Location: Hudson Canyon; east wall at the elbow
Fishing Method: Chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 50-70 lb class
Bait or Lure: Butterfish and live squid
Water Depth: 450 ft
Water Temp.: 68-70 deg
Information : I missed another trip w/ Lou (his Tiara), Mike and Nick. They decided to head out to the Hudson on Sunday. They arrived at the west side of the Canyon at 5:00 PM and trolled across to the east side. Nothing on the troll. They set up for an overnight chunk. First fish arrived at 7:00PM. They picked at the yellowfin until about 11:00PM when a fish got tangled around the anchor line. They proceeded to loose the fish and their anchor. The line was cut by the mono. They drifted all night and ended up 8 for 11 fish. All the action stopped at 2:00AM and it was a tiring time from 2 to 6 when they left for home. All in all not a bad trip considering it will cost $500 to $600 for a new anchor and line. I hope to get out there later this week w/ them. Tight lines........

Albies every where, swiched it up to some small metals and bagged three on light tackle (great fight). Got a tip from a friend in another boat (Water Torture) that fish where on the bottom so we started jigging and picked up some nice weakfish, caught one 24" (nice fish). In total, 18 fish were boated with a bunch more fought only to be lost in battle. Most of the fish were hooked on working rods up high in the slick as the charter stayed up all night and the worked the rods like pros.

Fishing Method: Drift
Specie: Fluke
Size: 16"-24"
Bait or Lure: Killies, Squid, Spearing
Water Depth: 10'-25'
Water Temp.: Nice
Information : Rough day on the ocean today though we didn't do too bad with the Fluke. Seemed like everytime one of us caught one 5 boats would pull up next to us, I guess they couldn't find a fish if they're life depended on it! Between all the Sea Robins and shorts we managed to catch 6 nice keepers which were fiesty as hell. After getting beat up for 3 hours we gradually made our way back around into the bay, stopping in a few spots to try another drift (caught only one more keeper). Striper trip next.

Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 60 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Butterfish chunks & Squid
Water Depth: 400 ft.
Water Temp.: 66.5 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula had his Bounty Hunter out of Clarks Landing Marina out to the Hudson Canyon for an overnight chunking trip with the Brian Williams charter from Edison, NJ. Seeing the 80 plus boats all bunched up in one area, on the West Wall, we opted to fish away from the crowd. After reading bait and Tuna in 400 ft. of water, we anchored. Before the anchor line came tight we had our first Yellowfin on. Over the next 4 hours we had one of the best nights of fishing this season with 2 and 3 Tuna on at a time in non-stop action. The weighted lines were going off as fast as we got them down to the 100 ft. depth where the Tuna were coming thru. The working lines were being picked up as fast. By 12:30AM we had gone thru 32 hook-ups with a limit catch of 21 Yellowfin and 1 Longfin in the fish boxes. A good time was had by all and we were on our way home by 1:30AM.

Water Temp.: 69
Information : 32' Luhrs Open departed Cape May 4pm. Arrived on site at the tip of the wilm at 7:30 pm saturday to be greeted by over 100 boats lining the wilm from tip to base on both the east and west wall. The lights made it look like the Wildwood boardwalk! Started chunking by 8pm while doing a slow drift (seas were nearly flat) and had the first runoff within 10 mins!. Boated a 40 lb yellowfin. Action was never fast and furious but it was steady and had over 10 runoffs until we departed at 3:00 Am. Boated 5 yellowfin to 60lbs. some boats claimed to have limited out with fish boiling behind the boat but the catch didnt seem quite that hot. Used strictly fluorocarbon leader. Fortunately few boats seemed to have bothered anchoring. The run back to cape may was a little rougher than the ride out as the wind picked up and pushed a quartering following sea at us for the 80 mile ride home.

Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Chunk/troll
Specie: Swordfish
Size: 300 lbs
Bait or Lure:
Water Depth: 375'
Water Temp.: 69
Information : Forget the tuna . . . forget the mahi. This is a once in a lifetime event. I had the Ron Antonelli Fishing Team back to the Hudson Canyon for a troll-n-chunk. Working through the Hudson for over 5 hours of trolling on Saturday produced nothing. Even the pots were clean of Mahi. Setting up for the overnite chunk on the west side, we proceeded to toss bait for 6 hours with no action. During what we thought would be a very quiet night of chunking, we started experimenting with different depths and baits. We were using 50lb standup tackle, and this particular setup was a 50 TW on a Penn International Tuna Stick. Baited with butterfish, on a #7 hook, tied with a Palomar knot with 80 lb leader and 100 lb line, it was the first and last bait to be run-off Saturday night. Ron Antonelli Sr. was the first angler to pick-up the pole after the reel went off, and we then started what was to be a 4½ hour fight that would have all six members of the charter taking turns with the pole, each one wearing full standup belts & harnesses. The as yet unidentified fish made over 25 runs, each one taking back 150-200 yards of line and going back deeper. Instead of just going under the boat, the fish made large turns AROUND the boat, and this had the fishermen working off the bow for over 1½ hours of the fight, all during a bit of a northeast blow that turned the whole fleet around from their original anchoring position, but thankfully fixing the current running behind the boat. After a while we just moved the drag from strike to full, and still we couldnt slow the beast down. And with the punishment that the line took from moving around the boat, under the anchor line (it was too crowded to get off the ball in case you're wondering) changing hands and fishermen dozens of times, we knew that the fish had to be hooked just right to allow us this much fight time. We were thinking Allison . . . we were thinking Bigeye, but when we finally got the fish to the surface, a very long Swordfish bill was staring us in the face. Gaffed, roped and dragged through the door of my 38' Henriques, she filled up the cockpit and still had her tail sticking out of the door! When weighed at the Brielle Yacht Club scale the Swordfish came in at 300lbs! Many thanks to my friend, Captain Jeff Dangelmajer, for working the charter as my mate. He did a great job througout the fight, helping to maneuver the pole, line & anglers around the boat, allowing the fishermen to play the fish correctly, and to the Ron Antonelli Fishing Team for their diligence, patience and teamwork! What a great season thus far! (By the way, the picture will be on my website this week)

Information : Headed originally to the Toms but experienced sloppy seas and decided for the easier ride to the hudson with some following seas. Arived to the city of boats and set up on the east wall. Within 10 minutes of setting up we had our first two run offs. In total we were 11 for 16 while keeping 5 yellowfin for the table. pretty steady all night but the NE winds blowing at least 15-20 knots threw us around pretty good. got chased off the pot at around 6am and arrived back at the dock at 10am. Great trip for the fishing not so great on the seas. Want to congratulate my crew, glenn for the relentless chunking, dad for the constant working the rods and Andy for falling asleep early and missing three gaffs. do it again in two weeks.

Information : Fishing started off great at around 8PM. Between Luke, Dick and Rich Henderson, 6 yellowfin to 90 pounds were caught by 9:30PM (not bad for only three guys fishing, one of which maintained the slick). Fish continued to enter the slick to about 12AM when the wind started to kick up (as anglers out there that night can attest to). From 12AM to dawn, there were a few run-offs here and there but the real news were the swells and waves that sent quite a few boats home early.

Information : Fished the hook this morning from 600-1200. At sun-up hit a small bass on a black yo-zuri and that was it till about 900. No bait in the water and a NE wind in my face. At about 900 a huge pod of bait made their way around the hook into the shallows between the false hook and the hook. Caught a couple dozen and livelined them to catch at least 25 fluke (all shorts) and picked up a few bluefish when they came in tight. Saw some bigger fish busting around but had no hookups. NE switched to a calm SE and picked fish till the pod of bait moved south. Still waiting for the bass to come in thick.

Information : Captain Phil Dulanie had the Dave Tolchin party from Sayrville, NJ out on the Canyon Runner for a Saturday-Sunday overnighter. Normally we refuse to fish in the Canyon on Saturday night and this trip again showed us that we should stick to that strategy. The Hudson Canyon was loaded with over 100+ boats on both sides and while a few boats did great, it was a struggle on others as the crowd, as usual, hurt the fishing. For us, we immediately had fish in the slick when we anchored and boated a couple Yellowfins only to have 3 boats troll with 100 yards of us right through the slick and another anchor even closer, and thus we lost the fish. We did pick a few more throughout the night but we never had the blitz we were looking for. However, we still ended up heading home with a half dozen nice Yellowfin.

Trolling from the west wall to the east wall produced 6 YFT and a few skippies. After setting up for the night chunk on the east wall, the action was steady and the party limited out with 18 YFT in the boxes by 9 PM. Seven more YFT were caught and released by 1 AM, two while jigging. The bite stopped between 1 and 4 AM. Five more fish were caught (three were jigged) and released by sunrise when it was decided to head for the barn. One of the highlights of the trip was Pat bringing a YFT to the boat on a 15 lb. spinning rod. Date Fished: 9\25\99
Location: Long Branch to Spring Lake
Fishing Method:
Specie: Fluke
Size: 14-19 in.
Bait or Lure: squid,spearing,fluke belly
Water Depth: 60-70 ft.
Water Temp.: about 67
Information : Ran out of Shark River Inlet and had birds working bait at surface. Cast lures and white bucktails for a few minutes and caught 2-3 lb. blues. Continued up to area off of Long Branch and drifted in 60-70 ft of water. Needed 5-6 oz. to hold and caught sea robins, a skate and a dog fish. Moved about a mile north and picked at fluke that were 14-15 inches in size. What happened to the big fall fish? These fish were small and hungry and hit hard. Moved south and ran into a huge fleet 30-50 boats south of the Shark River inlet about 4-5 miles out. Drifted for fluke and caught may shorts and finished with 2 keepers aover 19 inches between 3 of us. So ground swells left over from Gert I guess. Went in around 3:30 and discovered a full moon low tide in the Shark River basin. Water was very dirty with lots of bait and snappers at the marina in the back of the river.

Bait or Lure: Mackrell and green squid
Water Depth: 65-75 feet

Information : Nice day but the boat was packed full - no rail space. Sea was a bit rough on the way out which made the chug a little longer than normal. Left the dock at around 7:45 and dropped line at about 9:45am. Current was fast which coupled with the limmeted rail space created lots of tangles. Conditions improved in the afternnon and Capt Mike kept moving until we found some good action. The mates (Terry and Brad) did a great job as always. Between the four of us we ended up eith 67 sea bas an 6 snapper blues. All and all a good day inspite of the two drunks that Terry and Capt. Mike flagged by 10:30 a.m. If your gona drink your face off before lunch - please stay at home so us real anglers can enjoy what we pay for. THE PEANUT BUNKER WERE SCHOOLED UP ON THE BEACH BY HUNGRY BLUES. I GOT OUT ALL MY EQUIPMENT AND STARTED CASTING A BOMER A AT THE RIPPLES. I DID THIS FOR A LEAST A HALF HOUR, TANGLING UP A FEW BIRDS BY ACCIDENT THAT WERE WORKING THE BAIT. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE BAIT STARTED GOING CRAZY. BLUEFISH WERE SLAMMING THROUGH THE BAIT, JUMPING CLEAR OUT OF THE WATER WITH A FEW STRIPERS COMMING WITHIN 3 FEET OF THE BEACH. I CASTED EVERYTHING AT EM. DIAMOND JIGS, PLUGS, SPOONS, SIDEWINDERS, HOPKINS, THEY WOULDNT TOUCH ANYHTING, THOUGH I BELIEVE THEY WOULD HAVE HIT A STREAMER, TO BAD I DIDNT HAVE MY FLY ROD. YTHIS WENT ON FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS WHEN I FINALLY HAD TO LEAVE TO GET READY FOR SCHOOL. THE BLUES AND STRIPERS WERE STILL WORKIN THE BAIT JUST AS HEAVILY AS THEY DID WHEN I STARTED FISHING THEM A FEW HOURS ERALIER. Information : Bob Thomas, Bob Wald, Tony Hamidy & Phil Howley left the dock with me on Saturday morning. Thanks to good temperature charting from Offshore Satelitte Services (thanks guys!) we pointed the bow at Toms Canyon, which presented the best opportunity for warm, clear water, and we were not disappointed! The ride out on Saturday was everything the weather services said it wasnt . . . not flat, but certainly not the 6-10 footers that they called for . . . although the ride was smoothed over in the following sea. When you trolled into the swells & troughs it got just a bit heavey but settled out quickly in the evening. Overnite sea conditions turned into a lake, allowing those who wanted to drift to their hearts content. While we only managed four nice yellowfin (to 70 lbs), we missed none. It was just one of those nights when you were 200 yards away from the real bite! Hitting some pots on the way in and out enabled us to put a half dozen Mahi-Mahi in the box as well.

Picked at the blues until the party boats and other boat traffic broke up the feeding. Moved south (followed the Atlantis) in search of fluke. Could'nt buy a fluke!!! Found many sea robins only. The kids had a blast w/ catching all the sea robins. We must have had 20 fish in a one hour period. Moved from up on the beach to about 2 miles off shore. Stopped at all the hot spots with no luck. Heard from others a similar report, no fluke. Had a good day w/ the boys. Ended up keeping 4 small blues for the table, everything else went back to the ocean. Hope to try it again next weekend. Water Depth: 800 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 73
Information : With the remains of hurricane Floyd thru the area, Capt. Paul Regula had his Bounty Hunter out of Clarks Landing Marina, Pt. Pleasant out for an overnight chunking trip with the Mike Rao charter. With the satellite shots showing cold water in the Hudson Canyon (65 degrees) our choices narrowed to the Toms or Lindenkhol Canyons which had water in the 71 to 75 degree range. We opted for the Lindenkhol where we found 73 degree water. However, it was off the bank in 800 fathoms. It was a calm ocean so fortunately we could drift. We picked at the fish thru the night having 17 hook ups and putting 9 Yellowfin up to 70 lbs. in the fish box.

Information : Avoided the Hudson because of reports of 63 degree water. Went with our gut feeling and ran to the Toms where we went from 64 degree water to 75 degree water within 10 miles of the canyon. Trolled for an hour, caught a half dozen dolphin, and then set up for the night in the warmest water we could find, about 74 degrees at that time. We had a slow, but steady pick of yellowfins, a swordfish, and a blue shark until 4:00am when all hell broke loose. There were yellowfins everywhere in the slick and for the hour and a half that the bite lasted we topped our fish boxes with our limit of 15. Thanks to Capt. John Shipley our trip was a huge success, and thanks to the GREAT crew he brought along.

The further south we went the cooler the water got. At the ML it was 73.7 degrees F and 7 miles south is was one degree cooler. By the chat on 65 it appeared to be a slow day overall for inshore tuna. The skippy hit the jet after a try at a natural cedar plug. Tried the Mud Buoy for blues chunking butterfish but found no action for 1.5 hours. On the way to the MB, the sea surface temperature increased to nearly 75 and we went through increasingly larger areas of red water. It appears that the red tide algae blooms of the past are back.

Fishing Method: casting out with slow retrieve
Specie: Fluke
Size: 13"-18"
Bait or Lure: peanut bunker and live snappers
Water Depth: 1'-8'
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Me and my uncle started off fishing the wreck pond flume in Spring Lake, had all the fluke we wanted on peanut bunker until change of tide. Then moved to Bay Head to see if I could net some mullet. We were pleasantly surpirsed to find the fluke hitting there and picked up some more fluke. Funny thing, the fluke in Spring Lake only hit the peanut bunker but wouldn't touch the live snappers, while the fish in Bay Head would only have the live snappers and would have nothing to do with the peanut bunker. All in all, we ended the day with about 70 fluke, 6 of which were keepers. What a great keeper to short ratio, right? Tight lines

Information : Had the Ron Antonelli Fishing Team out to the Hudson Canyon for a chunk-n-troll . . . well, actually a "troll-n-chunk-n-troll". We arrived 1:30 on Saturday & trolled solid until sunset (which in beauty was only surpassed by the sunrise on Sunday), hooking & landing one lone Longfin & a few small Mahi at some pots (which were picked pretty clean by the 250 or so boats in the Hudson . . . it was like a city out there) After tossing the hook, the seas lay down, and Mate Captain Danny Edmonds had to work straight through till 5:30 to bag three more Longfin. We then trolled from the 070 line all the way to the Tip, picking again one lone Longfin. Not the worst of trips, but I feel that enormous amount of bait in the water had the fish making loop-de-loops looking for free handouts! I heard from other boats that either had 20 fish or none . . . so we can't complain too much! Kudos to the Ron Antonelli Fishing Team and Mate Danny Edmonds for working so hard all night and sticking out another 4 hours of trolling in the morning!

Removed cover and there was metal stuck underneath the flywheel. After removing the metal, engine started but would only run at 500-1,000 RPMS. Took 3 hours to get inside the inlet and around the point. Then SeaTow came by and we paid for the ride home. It felt very good to walk on dry land. Size: 6-10" but hit like a brick
Bait or Lure: spoons and snapper poppers
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : I was out snapper trolling today and killed them with a total of 67 fish caught my myself and a friend. Spoons were killing the snappers and we had 3 on at once and 2 on at times too. Also snapper popper trolled worked as did fishing peanuts but mostly they were chopped to pieces. All of the fish are there because of the peanut bunker, spearing, and birds. All of this from 3 hours and for the last half hour I fished by self and still managed to get 17 of them out of the 67. I had two double headers too which was fun. Fished from the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club to Fair Haven Docks.

Boat Name: Carcharodon
Date Fished: September 3-4
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Trolling/Chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: To 70 lbs.
Bait or Lure:
Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 73
Information : After being blown out Sunday through Thursday, Staten Island natives Joe Krisky and Rob Kerwick were the sole charters for a Friday overnighter to the Hudson Canyon, & I must give them their due in putting up with a very rough ride & bumpy night! But it was worth it! Talk about a heave on the ride out . . . we never made more than 16 knots, but as we got deeper the swells got wider and the chop flattened out. Hitting the Tip of the Hudson at 5:00 PM, we dropped our riggers and put out lines. Right away we had birds practically sitting on our lures, like they had been starved during Dennis' blow. There was a cornucopia of bait, small rainfish being devoured by boils of skipjacks and bonita, but we didnt score any tuna right away. Thanks to Don Wright on the Wright Stuff for calling us over to his area where he was marking larger bait. (By the way, Wright Stuff and Carcharodon were the only boats in the Hudson from 5 till 10 or so . . . I was on SSB the whole way out calling for guys to follow!) After picking away at some pots to put a few Mahi in the box, we were heading for the West Wall to set-up, and right at sunset, three lines went off! We went two for three, and this confirmed my thoughts on the bait (squids, macks, etc) settling in the Hudson Canyon from the east winds, and since it was getting dark fast, I had the mate throw the hook. Scott (His Lady) Lisowski worked the trip for me, and did a magnificent job with the gaff, while I wired each and every fish. We were like a couple of one-armed paperhangers out there . . . We had the night of the year on the chunk! Starting the slick, Scott threw out three chunks and we heard a fish come up and grab 'em! We used only ½ flat for the trip, catching 8-10 inch squids all night. When live-lined, they guaranteed a hit by a Tuna. We would bait the squid, hold the pole, feel the squid start running nervously . . . and then thumb out the line and wait for a pickup . . . it was THAT GOOD! We never had more than two lines in the water at any time, as our two fishermen were inundated with screaming reels! We limited out on Yellowfins by 9:30 pm, then released for the rest of the evening. A couple of Blue Sharks and a Dusky release made for a memorable night!

Stopping at the Shrewsbury Rocks for some seabass action before returning home with a cooler full of fish. On 9/4 Megan Beth had the Greg Harms party out to the Mudhole after cancelling an overnight Canyon trip due to the poor weather. We fished on the west side of the hole and managed to catch 1 bluefin along with a small mako, bonita, albacore, bluefish, ling and a whiting. Conditions were good and water was very clean after the storm and the inshore fishing should only get better in the upcoming weeks.
