Specie: Weakfish
Size:
Bait or Lure:
Water Depth:

Information : Can't beleave Sept.is gone! Very good way to end it thou. Had a fantastic slack tide bite, with some very nice size fish to start the day. Just about Everyone on the boat had their limit on Weakfish. Despite all the boat traffic, the fish bit all day. The 15 to 20 knot winds never came and it was perfect. Saw an amazing amount of bird life in the AM, from Chappel Hill to the Reach and the knoll. Tons of bait fish, peanut bunker, herring and schools of large bunker moving around the channels. I would think as long as we don't get any major weather, fishing should last at least another week....you never know thou, it could all be over tomorrow! Pool fish 7 pounds today. If your afraid of the rain on Sunday...bring a raincoat...no reason to stay home, these babies do bite in the rain and I'm sure there woun't be much traffic out there...get'em while they last!!!!!!!!! Boat Name: Roosters
Date Fished: 9-30-2006
Location: Sandy Hook
Fishing Method: anchor
Specie: Fluke
Size:
Bait or Lure: bunker
Water Depth: 6'
Water Temp.:
Information : Tom and I left our slip at AHM at 7:00 AM and headed up the Shrewsbury River to buoy #36 where we set up on two anchors to do some crabbing. The action started right off with the first keeper Blueclaw crab coming up in one of four traps I was using. Tom using handlines was very busy netting two and three at a time. The Roosters has a lot of room for crab lines and we were kept busy pulling crabs till 10:30 AM. We were happy with four dozen #1 jimmies, then tried some Fluking down in the bay till noon when we went back to clean our catch. There were no Fluke caught, only a lone Lizardfish. I give Tom the honors for the biggest crab at about 6½". The handlines really out produced the traps, our only bait being frozen Bunker and live Killies. There were many female and undersize crabs up in the river. The weather was cool in the early morning with a slight Westerly breeze and warm sunshine. A perfect end to the season for us as other duty calls. PETE (°_)°)

A great bunch of guys who never met one another till the trip ! Heade for the Toms Tip after getting reports from boats on their way back to the barn that it was the place to be. Arriving at 2 PM we dropped the riggers & proceeded to troll. After 2 hours of no knock-downs we came up upon quite a few very large weed lines and trolled pass them. Three lines went off & we boated 3 Mahi from 5 to 10 lbs. losing the third one. After quite a few more passes we pulled the trolling lines in and baited the Mahi catching about 20 more up to 15 lbs. Also caught in the weed line ere Bar-Jacks, a Blue Runner & several Pilotfish ! No tuna were hooked on the troll, as I was told it was slow on that the day before also. Darkness was almost upon us so we dropped the hook just short of Hendricksons Canyon in 540" of 72.5 degree water. At around 7 PM the first rod went off that was down about 125 ft. baited with a live squid. Pulled the first 80 lb'der over the covering boards & set the lines out once again. We caught a tuna ever 30 to 40 minutes, it was a pick, but steady, winding up with 12 Yellowfin & one Longfin, losing only 3 tuna. Picked up at 7 AM & heade towards the barn in a beautiful following sea. Once again Offshore Satellite Services provided the most accurate weather report, thanks Len ! With me, Capt. Information : Before I get to my report...Todays Asbury Park Press came out with "Sierra Club and others back Saxton for re-election" Now you know why the vote was put off till after the elections!!!! Money talks, it's the way it's been, the way it will always be! I am very surprised at Mr. Saxton. This man has supported us whole hearteadly over the years...I just have to pray that he will do the right thing..even thou I can't afford it! When money rules over conscience, are you truly a man of integrity?? We will see.... Fishing started out slow this morning..read fish near the pier and went right by them looking for the better bite, where we had them yesteray....BIG MISTAKE!!! Ended up backtracking after an hour! That's what happens when you go looking for the kill or go second guessing yourself..Still ended up with very good fishing...had some nice fish again. 7 1/2 pounder for the pool, our biggest so far this season. Saw loads of bunker moveing out the channel today, some blues under them, but I did see a few bass tails smacking the hell out of em'. A couple of customers took advantage of my report to not wait 2 weeks to come, they were glad they did today! Trying one more weekend with the Bluefishing, if not enough customers show this week, we will start Striper fishing in the afternoons. Fish have been caught, mostly shorts, but some keepers have come over the rails........keep you posted. capt.ron

He and his two trusty mates Mark and Jason led us to the tuna and we spanked 'em all night, going 23 for 30 on yellowfin from 50 to 80 lbs.,2 swordies of just legal size, one monster tilefish @ 40 lbs.and one Fat Albert of at least 70 lbs.!!! The highlight of the trip, for me at least, was my new trevala rod and trinidad reel(w/80lb. power pro)buttefly jigging system, wich proved to be deadly and unbelevably easy to handle the tuna! All in all a trip to remember, pics to follow soon.If you want to fish for tuna, this is the man and the boat u want! FISH ON !!

Information : Today's wreck fishing trip was very good with an abundant number of sea bass and porgies caught. We used some fresh peanut bunker that I caught at the dock which proved to be excellent sea bass bait and the price was good, almost all the porgies were caught on clam baits. The conditions in 50-80' of water East of Barnegat Inlet for this type of fishing were perfect with a good breeze and clean water the fish bit all day.Another great day to be on the water.

A hand full of fish, although I did have two customers who couldn't miss! Finally got outgoing late in the day, picked away, not great fishing but everyone went home with some. Conditions are everything, no matter what you fish for. Had live peanut bunkers today and that didn't seem to make any differance.....Weather looks great for the rest of the week.........capt.ron

Got threw slack and into the outgoing, had a few nice shots, only problem was, as the current ran harder, the wind blew even harder. Had a 2.2 knot drift for a while. Still ended the day with a nice catch of fish for the few customers who decided to show up. Last nights Bluefishing was excellant! Mostly gaf size fish now, with more than enough action to go around.....capt.ron

Fishing Method: drift fluke & Jig
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 8-12 lb.
Bait or Lure: Ava 27
Water Depth: 60-45 ft.
Water Temp.: 69
Information : Traveling down the river passed three head boats fluking between Clarks and the Inlet. The inlet had the occasional breaker so leaving had to be timed. Once away from the mouth the seas were running 3-4 ft. with a SE chop. Headed for the fluking grounds off the Bay Head Water Tower and set-up to drift with the aid of a sea anchor. Also dropped all canvas to reduce sail area. The tide was with the wind and it took 15 oz. to hold bottom. Caught some small fish and a dogfish but noticed the occasional fish on the depthsounder higher in the water column. Changed one rod to an ava and caught 5 blues. Called it quits after about three hours. Tricky time surfing the boat gettinhg back inside. All in all a nice solo experience with some fun dealing with conditions in my 17 ft.er. Enjoy. Tom

Information : What a lousy start to the day...The 30% chance of rain started at 5am and lasted till 8:30! Pretty good breeze blowing and not the best conditions for a bite. Didn't read much at all...again, just the opposite of yesterday. Stopped the boat on a small mark, Tom Krako cast out and hit one on the head for the first fish of the day...didn't even have the engines shut down yet. Picked a few fish (small ones) most of the morning, not good fishing at all. Bounced around waiting for the change, by 1:oopm conditions were perfect and the fish started to bite. Where there were no readings all morning, changed to the machine being red from 3 foot off the bottom to 10 ft. thick. Last drift of the day lasted for 3 buoys down the channel. 9 year old Ryan Silverman ended up catching the pool fish, a nice 5 pounder. He and his dad put 14 fish in the cooler. Several limits aboard. I Forgot to mention in yesterdays report that, Al Ristori had sent me an E mail regarding the Gill netter and that the Fish police were going to give him a WARNING....God forbid if I get caught with a fish 1/8 of an inch short or someone using a piece of fluke bellie for bait..these guys make you feel like you robbed a bank!!!! Shortly after setting up in the 100 square for chunking a screamer rod went off and the fish could not be stopped breaking the leader as the spool nearly emptied. The second and third hookups were lost due to inexperience. The charter got their act together on the fourth hook up and began a slow pick on yellowfins down 120ft. They boated four yellowfins to 65 lbs by 3 am and the action died except for some mahi.. Morning troll produced a fat longfin at the bombs and shortly thereafter we left for home with the 5 tuna and mahi on ice.

They had a ton of bait around the boat all night and by 11pm got the fish going on hammered diamond jigs and squid on 60-flouro down 80-100 feet. The bite was best from 2am to 4:30am when they started to release as they were all boxed up. They finished the night with a 100 pound yellowfin at day break that they put in the boat in the fish bag. Information : The morning started off in a panick....didn't read a thing from the time we left the dock, all the way up the channel...no bait, no fish, nothing!! Couldn't imagine where the hell that much bait and fish from yesterday could have gone...Water temp. only dropped .5 degress, so that wasn't the answer. Ran to where I started yesterday looking for some devine intervention, stopped the boat (on nothing)..after 5 minutes we had the first 4 fish in the boat, all 3 to 5 pounders! 9 year Mike Hyde, Kearny N.J. Started things off with a 4 pounder..he also went on to catch the pool fish at 5 pounds. Mike and his dad caught their limit...he told me he had off from school today, but I really think he was playing hooky! Anyway, as the bite was going on I watched the fish finder and didn't read a thing, no bait, no fish. Finally got some outgoing and started to move, had to hold the edge of the channel most of the day to put a catch together, but it was worth it Readings got much better late in the day..have no idea where the stuff came from, but very glad it did! Several limits on the boat and a day I thought would be a disaster turned out O.K....Fishin, gotta love it!!!!! Capt.Ron

Information : Very good fishing today!! Seems the cool change in the weather started to spark things up...Had the start of the outgoing first thing in the AM..slow bite at first, but we did pick fish. Bounced around looking for the best bait areas. Once the tide and wind started pushing us along, things got much better. Had fish on every drift, in the deep on the edges and in the flats. Fire tails, rubber worms and Gulp Sandworms worked great today with the fast drift. Several limits aboard. Fish went from 13 inches to 6 pounds for the pool. A shot of bluefish in the AM added to the fun. On a very disturbing note: Capt.Gregg from the Ocean Eagle/Sheepshead bay was fishing Sea Bright 2 days ago when a Gill netter who has been working the beach apparently had way too many Stipers...naturally you can't take them in NJ so they all went back "DEAD" Gregg said he was putting 15 to 30 pound Bass in his customers coolers, which everyone had 2..when he left there were still plenty left floating!! I saw the same guy down there 2 weeks ago....How the hell can this go on! Everyone has to make a living, and I have no problem with that, but God dammit there has to be a way to save these beautifull fish. This guy obviously couldn't give a crap! To kill these fish trying to catch a few lousy pounds of Blues is something I can't figure out. They proceeded to get them going and had a nice steady pick putting 12 in the boat by 1am when they hooked a big sword. The battle with the sword lasted close to 2 hours and DeCabia eventually darted the 160-170 pound sword and put it in the boat. They got back on the yellowfin and boated another 7 yellowfin plus a longfin and released 2 others for a total of 21 tuna. The yellowfin ate live and dead squid and sardines. They also pulled a few fish on the 8 oz hammered jig. Capt. Mark DeBlasio and mate Eddie Ferral took the Chad Lore charter out on the Hooked-Up II Monday/Tuesday and went right to the chunk down at the 100-square dropping the hook in 575 feet of water. Worked down the 100 line to just north of the Toms. Raised one white. Troller a bit deeper and found blue water and some bait but not enough to keep us there. Moved back to the 100 line and raised 4 more whites. Went 1 for 4. Nice fish about 70". Set up on the chunk. 1/2 hour later put our 1st yellow in the box. Had very little action until 12am where we boated our 2nd yellow. Started getting good marks of bait and fish. We dropped a sword line down to a thermocline at about 200 ft. About an hour later, we had a double run off of a working line with a live squid and sword line @ the thermocline. After a tough battle we boated one of the two. We got a couple of looks @ the one lost and it was about 7-8 ft long. Spent much of the prime time fighting the two swords. At daybreak boated two more yellows. Final tally--1-5 on whites, 1-2 on swords,4-4 on yellows and 10 mahi to 15lbs.

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: Sept 17-18
Location: 100-Square
Fishing Method: Overnighter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 80
Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo & Squid
Water Depth: 50-100 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia took the Elliot Braun charter out on the Canyon Runner Sunday/Monday and left early enough to do a little trolling. They put them in the water just inshore of the bombs where they started to pick a couple fish that turned out to be nicer yellowfin then they caught recently on the troll both pushing 80 pounds. The fish ate ballyhoo and tuna clones. It was not a hot bite so they picked up and headed down to the 100-square dropping the hook in 600 feet of water. They did not have much going on until after 11pm when the fish started coming through the slick. They proceeded to get them going and had a nice steady pick all night on live and dead squid and sardines. They also pulled a few fish on the 8 oz hammered jig. They were boxed up with 18 yellowfin in the 60-80 pound class and release 1 and lost only 2 for a total of 19 for 21 for the best average in a long time. Capt. Mark DeBlasio and mate Eddie Ferral took the Bill Matyi charter out on the Hooked-Up II Sunday/Monday and left early enough to do a little trolling. They put them in the water just inshore of the bombs where they started to pick a couple fish boating one yellowfin and missing one. It was not a hot bite so they picked up and headed down to the 100-square dropping the hook in 550 feet of water. They did not have much going on until after 11pm when the fish started coming through the slick. They proceeded to get them going real good and had great pick all night on live and dead squid, sardines and butterfish. They also pulled a few fish on the 8 oz hammered jig. They were boxed up with yellowfin in the 60-80 pound class and then went into release mode getting a total of 27 yellowfin for the trip with 6 released.

Boated a 60-70 lb.YFand broke another off in the props. Waited till about 7PM for a hit and finally a double came. After the "mad dog" bite the charter decided they had enough & we headed for the barn and a slow ride at 2:30 AM. And by the way Lenny's Belcaro's Offshore Satellite Forecast weather was right " on the money ", once again as was for the last trip !!!! Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40 to 100 lbs.
Bait or Lure: butterfish, live squid
Water Depth: 436 ft.
Water Temp.: 75 to 76 degrees
Information : Took the Stan Florey group from Matawan ,NJ out to the Hudson Canyon for a night of chunking. Arriving at about 4 PM on the West flat we saw none of the heavy sargasso weeds that were reported by the boats headed in. So with that we dropped the riggers, put out the lines and proceeded on the troll to locate fish before the chunk. No sooner then we did that we began seeing a lot of sargasso and started cleaning the lines till we had enough of it and pulled them in. Went to the chunk at about 5:30 PM and it wasn't 10 minutes when we had our first fish on. Boated a 35-40 lb. Longfin and broke another off in the props. Waited till about 10 PM for a hit and finally a double came. The tuna got wrapped around one another and we cut off one to save the other, which turned out to be in the 100 lb. class. We picked Yellowfin till about 2 AM when our deep sword line screamed. After an hour fight we finally got a good look at a huge Blue Shark. Bringing it leadered to the back of the transom it was almost as long as it. We made a mark when the Blue was straight across and it turned out to be 12' 6" long. I estimated the shark to be between 275 to 325 lbs. Seeing many Blue Sharks in my years of fishing I had to rank this one as one of the biggest I ever had on . Eventually after everyone got their photos of the monster I tagged it and released it back to the deep. After an hour passed the tuna came back and we picked all night till 6 AM winding up with 12 fro 40 to 100 lbs and losing only 3. And by the way Lenny's Offshore Satellite Forecast weather was right " on the money ". If I had paid attention to NOAA's we would still be sitting at the dock! Information : On Saturday Captain Mark DeCabia and Capt. Phil Dulanie had the Vin Valentino charter from Darien, Conn out to the Hudson Canyon and went right to the chunk right back at the 100-square. They sat in 600 feet of water. They got their first bit at 8:00pm when the fish came through the slick and they dropped down a jig and nailed one. They started a good pick around 11pm and it turned on solid at 2am. They had bites constantly the remainder of the night and ended the trip hooking 30 fish and missing 10 more. Out of the 30 they hooked they only boated 14.5 (one was eaten by a hammerhead). The fish were eating almost exclusively sardines on 60 pound flouro down 60-80 feet. They also had a ton on jigs that they started working non-stop. It may be sounding like a broken record but again the yellowfin favored sardines down 60-80 feet on 60 pound flouro and hammered diamond jigs. With a weary charter, the boys packed it in early and left to come home at 5am. On Saturday Captain Mark DeBlasio had the Mike Lilanski charter out to the Hudson Canyon and went right to the chunk right back at the 100-square. They sat in 575 feet of 75 degree water. They got their first bit at 10:30pm when the tuna came under the boat and they dropped down a jig. They continued to have the tuna slowly come through the slick and picked all night long putting 10 yellowfin in the boat missing another 5. They had a sword rod down 150 feet all night and it went off 3 times - they boat 2 fish and one was released and one was boated in the 90 pound class. They spent the morning running from pot to pot as the charter wanted to pick mahis all morning and that they did. Again, sardines on 60 flouro and hammered jigs produced all the fish.

I only got one keeper Fluke, which turned out to be the biggest of the trip at 20". Tom managed to out fish me as usual with four Fluke to 18". Dennis had four to 19" loosing the biggest of the day at boat side due to his sinker becoming fouled in the net, this in no way reflects on the way the net was handled by me. There were two yellow-eyed demons caught and released, a number of large Sea Robins and some small Lizardfish. The birds became Tom's favorite bait. Killies proved to be the best bait.We returned to our slip about 12:30 PM. There were three or four party boats that spent most of the morning on the Leonardo flats, there must have been something that kept them there that long, as Weakfish sometimes school in that area. We headed out to the Hudson Canyon and set up Trolling at the Tip and the area around the Notch where we went 5 for 7 on Yellowfin Tuna plus adding 1 Longfin. The largest Tuna weighed in at 70 lbs. All the Tuna were caught on Reel Seat spreader bars and rigged Balyhoo. The Reel Seat spreader bars pulled in a close pattern in the dark with all our Flood lights on produced the 2 largest Tuna. Anchoring in 550 Ft. on the west wall the night bite was non existant for us. All we managed were 2 mystery run offs and 2 Mako sharks the largest just under 100 lbs. Both were released. A brief morning Troll added 1 nice Mahi to the catch.

Location: Hudson
Fishing Method: Overngith
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 50-80
Bait or Lure: Sardines
Water Depth: 650
Water Temp.: 75
Information : On Friday Captain Phil Dulanie and Mark DeCabia had the Carl Bloomfield charter (with a special appearance by Joe Scott) out to the Hudson Canyon and went right to the chunk right back at the 100-square. They sat in 650 feet of 75 degree water. They got their first bit at 8:30pm when a longfin nailed a sardine 60 feet down. They then had the sword rod go off and after a short fight put a nice 55 inch 90 pound sword in the boat. They then got into a slow pick of yellowfin for the rest of the night and ended with a flurry of longfin around 5 in the morning. They ended the night with 5 yellowfin and 3 longfin plus the sword. The yellowfin were 50-70 pounds. As soon as the sun rose, the boys dropped down and added a few tiles to the mix. It may be sounding like a broken record but again the yellowfin favored sardines down 60-80 feet on 60 pound flouro and hammared diamond jigs. Adam LaRosa was on Vinny Gallo’s Gallant Lady with Canyon Runner crew members Brad Burgess, Billy Rowan, Mike Zajac, and Mike Gallo and ran out to the 100-square to get a night of chunking in. We anchored in 600 feet of water and got our first bite at 9:30pm on a sardine down 80 feet on 60 pound flouro. We then proceed to pick a fish every time they show on the recorded by either immediately dropping a jig down or adjusting the dead sticks to where they came through. Throughout the night we picked 8 yellowfin and 1 longfin and added a nice fat 58” 110 pound sword. The yellowfin were 50-80 pounds. In the morning we ran over to the west wall in 500 feet of water and picked 10 tilefish in 45 minutes from 5 to 20 pounds.

Information : Last nights fishing was very good again for Blues. Capt. Frank fished the Mud buoy, 1 drop all night. Pretty much non-stop action after 5 minutes of chumming. Today was a different story, the life we had yesterday down the beach, didn't want to co-operate today. Had a handfull of Fluke, some Sea Bass and Porgies. Most likely we will be trying to mix things up this week between bottom fishing, bass and blues/ whatever works is what we will do, were going fishing! The specialty thing just isn't going to work this time of year, unless some Weakfish settle in. Porgies are starting to show as well as the Sea Bass. Stripers have been caught in the AM the past few days, it's just not an all day bite with them right now. Would love to go Bluefishing in the AM, That's what there are plenty of, but the customers don't come down. Too bad, it's excellant action......capt.ron

Size: 50-80
Bait or Lure: Sardines
Water Depth: 700
Water Temp.: 74
Information : On Thursday Captain Phil Dulanie and Mark DeCabia had the Terry Miner charter from Connecticut out to the Hudson Canyon and went right to the chunk right back at the 100-square anchoring in 700 feet of water. They got there first bite at 9:30pm when Mark read a fish come through and they drop the jig down and immediately had one on. They then quickly boated 3 more 50-70 pound yellowfin on the jigs. They are using 6-10 ounce hammered jigs fished on Penn 16VSX. That slowed until the sword rod went off and they proceeded to fight the sword (that turned out to be foul hooked) for 3 hours putting it in the boat at 4:30am. The sword weighed 140 pounds. They got into a nice pick there after boating 5 more yellowfin. The lost another 8 tuna as well. The yellowfin favored sardines down 60-80 feet on 60 pound flouro. Captain Mark DeBlasio had the Hooked Up 2 out to the Hudson on Thursday with the Kevin Corradino charter from Brick, NJ and went right back to the 100-square going right to the chunk. He did not get a bite until 11am and then proceed to pick away at yellowfin putting 8 in the boat from 50-70 pounds and going 2 for 3 on swordfish that were released. Once again, hammered 10 ounce diamond jigs and sardines on 60 pound flouro caught best. They also lost another 10 yellowfin as the fish seem to be fighting extremely hard probably due to the full moon and the charters are having a tough time handling them.

Bait or Lure: Squid, SPearing, Peanut Bunkers, Mullet, Berkley Gulp Sandworms
Water Depth: 20-50

Information : Broke the inlet at 6:30am with live peanut bunkers in the livewell. We headed south and hit a school of bunkers in the 9-12" range, they had to be 400-500' long by 100' wide at the widest point. Noneone but us there. We nailed some blues on jigs and tried fishing snagged bunkers without luck. We started fishing the peanuts when the bluefish we caught spit them up. Caught a few more then started catching some decent weakfish. We fished our way down to point pleasent and ended up with about 4 real big croakers, 12-15 weakfish (4 of which were keepers), about 10 bluefish in the 2-3lb range, about 6-8 short fluke (one tagged by the littoral society of Sandy Hook), a few skates and some big sea robbins. We fished between the bayhead and mantaloking water towers without much luck (couple small weakfish). All in all not a bad day but I had hoped to see some keeper fluke and maybe a striper under the bunker. Still better than a good day at work. Will be out tomorrow for seabass, maybe hit the Mowhawk or USS Algol, fishing by myself... Saturday we will head offshore for tuna weather permitting. Brett

With the wind on our tail we shot out to the Hudson to try to get the skunk off the boat, we set up at the tip and worked into the deep where we found miles of sargrass and warmer 74 deg water, it was hard keeping the grass off the lines and we were ready to bail-out when a 60lb yellow crashed the center spreader, we boated the fish and headed back to the barn, the fish are there if you can get through the grass, saw some huge fish break water on the way out, but could not tell what they were I guess the bluefin read the reg's for the north and decided to hangout south until our season close's!!!!
