Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: troll/chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 70lbs.
Bait or Lure:
Water Depth: the edge
Water Temp.: 71
Information : I had a great crew aboard including Joe Frasco, Donald Hallingse, Dave Lawton, Joe Miele, and Rich Srnka. Unfortunately, the crew out voted the captain to head for the hudson instead of heading down south... but in spite of tough catching, we eeked out a decent trip. The chunk produced nothing but Mahis and blue sharks eventhough we moved twice in the night We began way down on the 060 line south of the letters, then up to the west elbow, and finally on the east side where we began the troll. Trolling led us to the 100 square where we finally got our first tuna. with the clock pushing us to speed up the catching and a bit of a blow coming, we made haste and got 5 for 8 on nice yellowfins and longfins. we had a late start for the 92 mile run home, but we had fish on ice... later we heard that the fleet to the south were in non-stop action... can't be everywhere.

Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Overnigther
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-80 Pounds
Bait or Lure: Squid
Water Depth: 600 Feet
Water Temp.: 74
Information : Captain Phil and mates Justin Nighan and Jeff Stolarz arrived at the Hudson Canyon’s east wall at 10pm Friday night due to a late arriving charter and things were not looking good as the chunk bite did slow down in the Hudson from the beginning of the week. However, anchoring on the edge towards the mouth on the east wall was the right call as the Dennis Rogers charter from Interlaken, NJ went 11 for 14 on 40-80 pound yellowfin the chunk and add a bunch of mahi. In fact, the charter was so happy with the chunk bite that they told us to go home at 5am as they did not want to troll since they had enough tuna already. We re-pack the tuna on ice and were on our way home by 6am.

Location: Lindenkohl
Fishing Method: chunking
Specie: Swordfish
Size: 245 lbs
Bait or Lure: butterfish - squid - sardine
Water Depth: 550 ft
Water Temp.: 74*
Information : RAFT fished with Capt. Nick Neuberg and mate Greg on Fri-Sat. Our ride out on Fri was very pleasant, getting to the edge at 6pm, we went directly to chunking. Had 2 immediate bumps by unknown fish. Setteling in, our first yellowfin was decked st 8:30, and a couple more by 10. These fish were in the 70-80 lb range, and not all hitting the same baits. By 12 midnight, 3 more yellowfin were boated and 2 small swordfish were released. At 12:30 a somewhat normal run-off occured on one of the 30-TW's. Quickly realizing this was not a tuna fish. The 1st angler stuck with the fish for 20 min, and decided to pass it to the 2nd angler, myself. After 20 more min I passed it to the 3rd angler, RonJr. Keeping the maximum pressure on this fish without a break-off, we continued this fighting rhythm for 3 more turns. Nearly dumping the spool, we maintained pressure for one+a half hrs., finally getting sight of our hooked fish, it being a very large swordfish, we immediately sunk 2 gaffs into the head, securing our catch, and at the same time fighting off a blue shark trying to make our fish his dinner. Thru the transom door he came and everyone was glad to see another Gladiator in the cock-pit. Estimating the fish at 250-260, the electronic scale back at the dock showed the proper weight. But the night was not over! At 3am another small swordfish was released, 2 more yellowfin boated. At 4am 2 more yellowfin boated and yet another small swordfish released. At 5am, 3 more yellowfin were boated, and at 6 we called it a night. Setteling in and arranging the cock-pit, Capt., mate and anglers were very happy to see fish boxes of tuna and a super swordfish for our catch. Happy trails....RAFT

Size: 35-50#
Bait or Lure: Butters, ballyhoo, and plastics
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Left the dock at 10 PM instead of midnight because of the forecast (tropical strom winds) for late Saturday. Arrived at the Lindy around 3PM (could see it all lit up from 10 miles away because of the 40+ boats), and set up on the chunk. Boated one nice YFT before the sun came up at which time we started to troll. Trolled til about noon and went 6 for 6 on the tuna ( 1 YFT and 5 LF). The troll bite was good as all the boats out of Beach Haven had good catches. I want to thank our captain, Doug, and mate Jim who are great guys to fish with (nowledgable and easy going). I recommend this boat to anybody. Good show Boyz.

As we arrived at the tip at around 3:00PM we got the rods in the water and trolled down the wall after about about 2 hours of trolling and thinking things were going to be slow, we had a triple header going 2-3 on longfin. We continued to troll and look for a spot for chunking. We finally settled on the spot where we had the triple header and we had caught many other fish in that spot in the past. The water looked good as we had great bait readings with a few degree temp. break. We barely set up for the chunk around 7:00PM when the first rod went off using live squid and it was non-stop action ALL NIGHT on the drift. We could only get a rod or two in the water before getting slammed by one of those freight trains. We initially went a horrible 3 for 9 as our gaffing skills were a little rusty. After we brushed up on our gaffing skills we limited out fairly quick. There were were so many tuna in our area that the guys broke out light bait casting tackle and had fun catching and releasing 40-50 lb. yellowfin on 14 lb. test. I have never seen so much life in the canyon between dolphin, turtles, monster blue sharks, tuna, etc. I can't forget about Fergs first mahi tipping the scales at about 20 lbs., what a beauty. The tuna wore the crew out as most of us went to sleep and left the tuna biting right behind the transom at 3:30AM. At sun up we passed up on the morning troll so we could get a jump on cleaning all those fish...and we had a bonus, FLAT CALM SEAS ALL NIGHT!!! AWESOME CREW AND WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE TIME.

Trolled around a little more and hooked up a big one, hell of a fight which produced a 65 lb. longfin! Trolled a little more and hooked up and boated a 63lb. longfin! Pulled the hook on two more and tied up early due to the 25 plus boats and more arriving. We had Mahi behind the boat imeidiatley and bailed the hell out of them. We put over 25 in the boat in the first 15 minutes. We kept catching them all so we would be able to get our tuna rigs out. First yellowfin came at 8:30 and throughout the night we went 10 for 14 on them. We pulled the hook on a sword about 30 feet back and 10 feet from the leader at 5:30am. Our last tuna at 6:45 was a 64lb. longfin! We had little squid behind the boat.
The water was beutiful blue, the break is a couple miles inshore of the tip In total we had 5 longfin (3 over 63lbs.), 11 yellowfin, and 30 dolphin, and a lost sword. Great night.

This was the Jenny Lee's charter but Capt Dave Bender asked me to take them out after his boat deveoped mechanical problems rather than send the charter home to Cleveland. We arrived on the west wall at 9pm and drifted till 6:30 am. Though the mates and charter worked their butts off we were unable to get a single run-off. We began trolling and the charter boated a double header of larger than usual longfins.
We continued up the west wall and began picking yellowfins, one an 80 lber. When we hooked up the 2nd yellowfin we had two white marlin follow the lures to the boat but they refused the pitch baits and further trolling in that area. We reached the tip at 12noon and headed home with 2 longfins and 3 Yellowfins on ice. What a pleasure it was to see the charter's and mate's long faces turn to teamwork and smiles as they went 5 for 5!

Information : Captain Phil Dulanie, mate Justin Nighan, and Capt. As we figured Isabel had no effect on the tuna and within 2hours of trolling we had 3 70-80 pound yellowfin in the boat and lost a big wahoo. Setting up on the drift we had a double header on the chunk within seconds of getting the baits in the water and had 14 big yellowfin in the boat before 9am. The rest of the night was spent catch and release fishing as we caught another 11 releasing everyone. In total the crew went 25 for 27 on yellowfin and everyone was 70-90 pounds. It appears a little bigger class of fish moved into the canyon. Once again the action was up on the West Wall of the Hudson and squid were the bait of choice.

Information : Made a last minute trip on the Deep Adventures after being blown by Isabel. We arrived at the canyon at 10:30 pm and by 11:30, all fares had one fish apiece going 4 for 5. The bite stopped for a couple of hours and then we had steady action from 2:30 am till 6:00 am when we limited and left with 12 fish for the paying coustomers and a few for the crew. Capt. Jimmy and mate Joey were awesome. One of our fish took off like a race horse from the stern up to the bow where it wraped itself around the anchor line. Capt. Jim and the fare mutually decided to cut the line and rerig, but intead of letting go of the free end, Jimmy held on and the fish finally freed itself. He then dragged it back to the stern, fish still on the line, and mate Joey spliced it back onto the main line and we brought the fish in; a 65 lb yellowfin. We had tuna free jumping off the stern and you could see them picking off chunks in the slick. Great day with true pros.

Setting up in 600 feet of water on the West Wall of the Hudson we quickly had 2 yellowfin in the boat on the chunk and spent the next hour fighting what we thought was a sword. Unfortunately it was a 350 pound blue shark hooked in the tail. Thereafter we did not have a bite and at 3am decide to pull the anchor and reposition for the morning bite. Water was dirty even on the in-coming. Called it a day at 2pm, but the weather was super. On Sunday I fished with YKNOT Tony on his 25 Seacraft. We hole-shot the inlet and headed for the SGReef. Caught fish in the am only, 1 fish going 6lbs., others 3-4lbs, only 2 shorts. Soon after lunch the tide shifted and things stood still. Called it at 2pm. That boat only does 35kts.from wreck to wreck. Another super day on the water, dry, cool breeze, NO BUGS.....Happy trails....RAFT

Fishing Method: troll,drift
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 8-10pds
Bait or Lure: shad spreader bars, squid/spearing
Water Depth: 60
Water Temp.:
Information : We had two fuul day trips on Saturday September 6th. We started fluking on the first with a slow bite. Only two keepers. We then decided to go to Shrewsbury and troll for some bass/bluefish to give the charter some action. Within 10 minutes of begining to troll we had two fished hooked on one rig. We quickly had 10 nice size bluefish in the box. We then headed south again to try for some more fluke but the croakers and sea bass were hungry. Since sea bass are closed we had fun with some catch release action. The evening trip on Saturday night proved to be a blood bath with the charter limiting out on 170 bluefish at the Shrewsbury rocks. We head offshore again this weekend in search of the tuna-will give an update upon our return

Boat Name: Double Diamond
Date Fished: 9/1-2
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 60lbs
Bait or Lure: butterfish,squid
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Squeezed in an overnighter for the Ed Compta party between fronts. After a bumpy ride out the canyon was calm and trolling in the afternoon only produced 8 skipjacks. The chunk bite was good all night long and the bites came regularly with a couple of barrages. The group boated 18 40-70lb. yellowfin and lost another 7. Also a 90lb mako invaded the baits and they boated him too. Live squid was the hot bait.
Angler Name : Chris Hempstead
E-Mail : njcharter@aol.com
Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: Sept 1-2
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Overnigther
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-80 Pounds
Bait or Lure: Squid
Water Depth: 600 Feet
Water Temp.: 74
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Phil Ludlow and Lou Ferris got in one trip before what looks like a week at the dock due to some nasty weather and once again loaded the boat with a limit of yellowfin. The Chris Hempstead charter from Fairhaven, NJ, trolling the east and west walls of the Hudson up by the bombs produced a couple yellowfin and a couple of misses but really just killed the time until night fall. Setting up in 600 feet of water on the west wall it did not take long and the rods were bent over with 40-80 pound yellowfin. Squid were by far the best bait both live and frozen. It was a solid pick all night long and by 4am they took the rods out of the water after going 24 for 28 for the trip including releasing a couple for the next one. With the northeast winds and Hurricane Fabian it looks like the next one will not be until next week sometime.

Date Fished: Aug31-Sep1
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 70 lbs
Bait or Lure: Squid/Butterfish
Water Depth: 420 ft
Water Temp.: 74
Information : Capt Bernie Roth hosted the Chris Martin charter from Philadelphia for an overnight chunking trip to the Hudson Canyon. We anchored on the west wall at 7pm and did not get the first bite till 1 am although we had porpoises and squid around the boat most of the night.
From 1 to 3 am the charter boated 8 yellowfins. From 4:30 to 6am they boated 5 more yellowfins. Unfortunately we had to leave at 6 am for the charter to meet a scheduled return to Phila by 1 pm and we left them biting. As we were pulling the anchor we had a double hookup and we were marking fish on the screen. For all but one person, this was their first canyon trip and they did well boating 13 of the 18 solid hookups they had.
