Location: Sandy Hook
Fishing Method: Casting Poppers
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 32"+
Bait or Lure: Home made lures
Water Depth: 13'
Water Temp.: 58
Information : Sorry for the late report, but it seems a report of good fishing is needed here. I went out Friday with my buddy Nick, and between noon and 4 on a wearm sunny day, we caught quite a few nice big blues and two keeper bass, all on poppers. Saturday I went back with my kids and caught a bunch more blues, no bass. We were in the bay, close by the Hook. I just love watching schools of big fish snapping at poppers, especially when the popper is being cranked in by an excited kid. Peace.

Angler Name : AL Romanelli
E-Mail : ajrjlg@aol.com
Boat Name: miss shelly/freddie c
Date Fished: sept 29,30
Location: sandy hook bay,rips,roamer
Fishing Method: drift
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 0
Bait or Lure: worms,eels
Water Depth:
Water Temp.: still to high
Information : Could not find anyone to join me on Friday night on my boat so I went out on the Freddie C. This boat was loaded with patrons due to the Teal being offshore, must have been 45 anglers. Fished the bow of the boat and had 1 strike on the N side of roamer shoal, the night ended with the ENTIRE boat landing 3 fish. Went out to the rips in my boat on Sat morning just before sunrise, not a tap, did see some boats netting fish, boats landing fish were using live peanut bunker. Since this was the first weekend that I was targeting bass I could not give up, I tried the rips once again on Sat evening from 7-10, not a tap, and did not see any boats netting fish either. I read the board and saw the reports from other guys fishing the sandy hook area, you were not alone, fishing was definetly tough. All three of my exscursions were during an incoming, this time of year you have to catch it just right ,its early, anybody do anything on the outgoing? I plan on trying clams next time out, the fish were there , the fish finder was reading fish(not thick), they just would not strike. Its still early we need more cold weather.

Nothing but annoying sharks. Finally, hoping to salvage the trip, we moved in on the stakes south of #1. Lots of bait around and some big croakers which we tossed back. Highlight of the trip was a 15" keeper weakfish, the only one of the day. Did hear a radio report of a guy with a 24" and 36" stripers down south a bit. Water temp was 60, so they're on their way.

Angler Name : Ken
E-Mail : jstp21a@prodigy.com
Boat Name: Explorer
Date Fished: 9/30/00
Location: Barnegat Inlet
Fishing Method: Drift
Specie: Fluke
Size: 16"
Bait or Lure: squid/kilie
Water Depth: 60
Water Temp.: 66
Information : Sunday looked like the first decent day of the week, and the ocean was fairly calm. Started north of the jetty, looking for weakfish or fluke, and picked up a couple fluke (shorts). Moved out to the Barnegat Light Reef (tires), and picked up a keeper and another short. Apparetnly the bite was best around 8 AM both Sat and Sun. A few skates, sand sharks, and sea robins later, moved to the range buoy, and picked up another short. Decided to troll around the range buoy after lunch, but nothing doing. Back to the bay, ended up by 42 buoy, with a few bites on finess, but nothing landed. Talk on the radio was of a pretty slow day - nothing trolling out at the Barnegat Ridge, but a couple fluke there. My guess is that the gale from last week kept the bottom stirred up too much, and the bluefish and albies just didn't come inshore.

Angler Name : Ron Antonelli Fishing Team - Ron + Karen
E-Mail : Karonaraft@cs.com
Boat Name: Karona
Date Fished: 9 - 26
Location: Manasquan River
Fishing Method: drifting + jigging
Specie: Fluke
Size: 3 - 4 lbs
Bait or Lure: 3" Megabait spearing jig
Water Depth: 8 - 15 ft.
Water Temp.: 67 - 70 dgs
Information : Coming off a blow-out canyon weekend, fished the Manasquan out of bordum. Turned out to be a pretty fun day. Started off drifting bait in the river from the bridge to the inlet, and caught a couple of short fluke. Karen decided to stick with the bait, but I tied on a megabait jig that resembles a spearing. After 5 casts, a 4 lb. fluke decided to commit suicide, or maybe have lunch, regardless, that lure out-fished bait all day. I continued to catch fluke, shorts and keepers, along with cocktail blues, just before the inlet walls. After 3 hrs of jigging, we decided to take the boat thru the back channel and under the 35 bridge to moor to a dock to walk to the 7 Eleven on B'way to get hot chocolate and a snack. As we were tying up, large herring were smashing spearing by the hundreds. So, out came the light-weight graphite spinners and small kastmasters, and non-stop herring catching for over an hour, all to be released. Not bad fun for a day on the Manasquan.

Started a decent pick of 60-80lb yellowfin within the first hour, which slowed as boat traffic picked up after dark. The fish were still there, swimming under the lights but too skittish to bite. Eventually we got them to feed again and it did'nt take long for our party of 4 anglers to limit out with 12 nice yellowfin boated out of 20 and 1 swordfish, so we left them biting at 5:00am and headed for home.

As we stood in shock he jumped again and bite off.We had another flurry at 3:00 and at 6;30 In all we caught 6 yf and lost 10.The fish were on the east wall in 300-500ft.On the way home we trolled again and were follow by a huge mako that came right up along side of the boat as if to get a good look at us. In all it was a great trip. Next time we might try making a daisy chain of tuna heads and slowly troll home with a slab of tuna trolling behind on wire.We hope for one more trip if weather permits.

Boat Name: Bird-of-Prey
Date Fished: 9/22-23/2000
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: troll/chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 60-100 lbs.
Bait or Lure: butters and squid
Water Depth: approx. 500'
Water Temp.: 73
Information : Ron and I arrived at the tip of the Hudson about 5PM and decided to head down the east wall until the water temperature changed. About half way to the east elbow the water temperature had climbed about a degree so we set out the lures and trolled the rest of the way to the elbow. With radio reports of little activity on the troll, we pulled in the lures and set up for the chunk at the east elbow. Our first fish was a runoff at about 9:30PM. From then on to 7AM we went 11 for 14 on YFT with 5 releases. The slowest period was 11PM-1AM (I napped but Ron was up all night). The best time was daybreak to 8AM with more regular hookups and bigger fish. At our departure, Ron noticed mahi under a nearby lobster pot buoy but I declined the suggestion (next time Ron) to further fill the coolers.

Bait or Lure: Reel Seat Squid/Billy Bait Bars; BallyHood Lures/ Butterfish
Water Depth: 300-500
Water Temp.: 70-73
Information : Like the rest of the fleet, the crew of the Carcharodon looked to fit in the 1 trip of the weekend before the next "blow"...and boy, did we hit 'em nice! Arriving early to maximize trolling time, we found a nice 2.5 degree break & a weed line 10 yards wide & a mile long...it yielded dozens of Mahi of which we kept a nice 15 pounder. Heading over to a no-man's-land area on the East Side, we found the bait & the trollable Longfins we had left there the week before! A couple of nice 50 lb Albacore hit the deck & we were on another fish a minute later...but wait, this turned out to be a 100 lb Mako! Talk about life!.. mate David Seebode got a picture & clean release on the Mako, only to have his cousin hit another lure a couple minutes later! I decided we would chunk right there, & we had Yellowfins under the boat from minute one! To say the least it was a 'mad-dog' bite & we returned to port early with a nice catch. Let's hope for the best re: fall weather, right?

He used a casting net and cought hundreds in a few minutes. We caught 6 big keeper fluke. Son John caught the biggest at 24". On the way back from the oceaside of the Hook we drifted a few times just inside the tip of the Hook. We got 2 big Weakfish. The biggest was 27", Son John again. Caught a few dozen crabs as well. Perhaps someone could explain why the vast majority of the crabs caught (and released) are female this time of year. It was about 6F to 1M.

Information : A very surprising little turn out--perhaps 10 fares--maybe it was the cooler weather or perhaps it was the false rumors of the oil spiil.regardless, fishing was very good today.Although it did start off as a slow pick in and around Prince's Bay,a move to the top of the Raritan Reach Channel was very productive. The weakfish today were considerably larger than the past 2 weeks.Average size to day was in the order of 18-19 inchs ( with a good amount in the lower 20 inch class ) while the past 2 weeks there were more 15 inchers.I ended the day with 8 keeper weakfish ( to 22 inchs ) out of 10 boated in addition to 6 bluefish. The 10 fares caught enough fish to fill 2 five gallon buckets of racks as opposed to last Sunday when a full boat just barely managed to fill 1 bucket with racks.

Edges of the channels were all producing with the larger fish being taken at buoys 3&4 by the raritan river. Key was to stay in the 20-28 ft depths at the edge of the channels where you were marking bait. Also caught one small 14inch striper, two cocktail blues, and a 16inch fluke. Good variety and steady action. Probably would have done a little better out in the bay but I was hiding from the wind/waves. A very relaxing and enjoyable day on the water. Immediately after setting up for the night chunk a giant manta ray was hooked and it leaped clear of the water twice before almost spooling the reel and pulled the hook . We chunked two more longfins and action stopped. At 3am we decided to move to the west wall where there was more chunking activity on the drift. We drifted till daybreak and then trolled till 9am without a touch before heading home with 5 longfin on ice.

When the sun came up added a few more dolphin and threw a dead dolphin to an 8-10' shark in our slick. The shark inhaled the bait and the fight was on until the leader broke. Continueing to chunk we were surprised when an 80# (est.) white marlin took hold and gave us a good early morning aerial show. We brought the fish alongside the boat, took some pictures and made the release. Started on the troll with bait surfacing all over, took a few more dolphin and headed home early to beat the forcasted 15-20 knot winds.

Location: Eleph Trunk
Fishing Method: Chum and Chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-60 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Butterfish/Mackeral chum
Water Depth: Approx. 150'
Water Temp.: ?? Temp. gauge down
Information : Left dock, Lighthouse Pt. Marina, at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Loaded up with only one flat of butters and 5 lb. mackeral chum the night before. Nice ride out with 2 ft. seas, swell and no chop (checked Noaa real-time info and was correct). After 1 1/2 hour ride SE of Cape May inlet, arrived at west side of the Trunk, half way down fron the north tip. Spotted a real nice weed line 3 mile west with some signs of life and bait, but decided to go to the "spot." The "spot" was the the Trunk (as reported the last few days) and the temperature break over structure on the west side. Chunked and chummed for two hours - until about 10:30-11:00 a.m. They showed up in our slick feeding like calculating missles. The Yellows were, when we first spotted them, almost directly off the transom and only 5-10 feet down. We hooked up mostly within 10 feet of the surface or within 150 feet of a free-floating butter, with no weight. Key for us: 5/0 hooks; 40 lb. florocarbon; most hook-ups with chucks over whole butters; no deadsticking of baits- constantly feeding the line; tempature breaks over structure; bury the hooks; when fish feeding on surface, strip 15-20 feet of line with 5-6 ft. floro leader and toss for free fall. We ended up with five nice tuna, with two fisherman. Left the grounds at 1:30 P.M.

Water Depth: 15-20, Shipping Channel
Water Temp.: 72-75
Information : Had 3 fishing trips over the weekend. Friday out with the folks for a 3 hour fluking try between 14FT and #19. Arrived an hour before low tide. Nothing happening that day, but it was a very pretty day. Saturday, we headed back to Ed Holme's Squirrel's Nest, a place that rarely dissappoints. But, today it did, and we did not even get a bite. Spend a 1/2 hour looking for fish, and found good marks in the stakes. Picked away at them, and put a decent catch in the box. On Sunday, we headed back to those same numbers and we slaughtered them! Had 3 rookies and 1 good fishermen on board (I 'mated' that day!), and we had constant action on a mixed back of weakies, blues, and flounder. We were close to using up all our bait, and started cutting up Spot, which the fish seemed to like even better than crab. Summary: a bad day, an ok day, and a great day.

Tom and crew outdid themselves once again and got us into some great tuna action. Starting with an 80+ lb. longfin at 10 pm, we saw consistent action until daybreak. All in all, we put 8 yellowfins and 2 longfins in the box, while pulling the hook from 3 others. Except for one 70 lb. longfin, all of the fish were in the 80+ lb. class. With lots of bait present all night, the crew was able to capture live bait that proved to be the edge that we needed to make a successful night of chunking.

Location: Baltimore Canyon
Fishing Method: Chunking
Specie: Swordfish
Size: 7 1/2 ft over 100 pounds
Bait or Lure: butterfish
Water Depth: 480 ft
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Got a late start and didn't leave Cape May untill 7PM Sat eve headed 150 degrees to Baltimore on good information. Ariving at 10:30 at the tip we had to find at spot over 100 boats in the fleet. Set up just to the north. Frank Crampton and I fished this trip alone. Set one rod at 50 feet the other two were at the surface. This was at 11:30 at 11:45 the deep rod started to race 0ff. Fish was very strong and it took over an hour and a half before we saw the leader. I almost fell over when the bill of the swordfish came in to view. It then took a good 45 mins to get this first ever for frank and myself to get it into the boat. We decided to get this catch home as the was no way to ice it down. So our first trip to the Baltimore ended as soon as we got there. The fish was as long as the width of my boat. Both anglers were dead tired. The weather and ocean were perfect for the ride home. Tonight we eat fresh swordfish steaks. This has been a great season as we have fished the Pocket Rocket every weekend offshore from the 1st week of july till now with only one rain and weather delay. Will try again next week see you offshore Phil

Size: 100#
Bait or Lure: Butters
Water Depth: 400
Water Temp.: 69-73
Information : First Canyon trip of the year turned out to be a good one with near perfect weather. Arrived at about 4pm and trolled nothing. We found a few nice dolphin around the pots before setting up for the chunk. Lots of squid and readings and our first run off was a 40 # swordfish on a live squid down 150 feet. Released him and then caught a half dozen tuna during the night with some nice size ones. The troll was good and by 9 am we had another bunch of longfin with one 5 banger going off. Wish I had than fire drill on film. we finished up with some more dolphin on the pots. 230 gallons of fuel at 1.84 per gallon hurts though.

Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: to 60 lbs
Bait or Lure: Butterfish/Reel Seat Speader Bars (Billy Baits & Squids)
Water Depth: 350-500
Water Temp.: 69-74
Information : With reports of fishing in the Hudson on the wane, mate Tony Hamidy & I decided on the Lindenkohl & were rewarded...well, 50% anyway...for our efforts. West Coast visitor & host Richard Clarke & guests Jim Murphy, Paul Onitsuka & his son Alex were aboard. Arriving with three hours to troll, we found schools of breaking Longfins & Porpoise schools which kept us busy before setting up for the chunk. A slight interruption required the captain to don bathing trunks & cut a booby-trap off the props (nice warm, clear water, I could see baitfish but thankfully no sharks) but we were underway & catching Longfins quickly. Paul helped 11 year old Alex boat his first Big Game Tunas... lotta fun! At the magic hour of sunset (it happens almost every time) I hooked the first Yellowfins of the day (2), hit the M.O.B. button, boated the fish & started chunking with all great expectations! Not a touch, not a runoff, not a peep all night...Tony & I worked the lines & baits but to no avail. Morning brought the great Longfin bite we had left the evening before & a total of 10 Longfins & the 2 Yellows were our prize.

Decided to change to weakfish in the Terminal Channel - 50 other boats and I. Caught a short weakfish and a keeper fluke. Decided to work my way west in the Raritan Reach, all the way to buoy 14 with no luck. Headed back to the south end of Chapel Hill Channel at the last hour or so of the outgoing tide, where I caught a bunch of weakies two weeks ago, in a similar situation. Caught 11 keeper weakfish with the largest at 22" and 21.5", and some short weakfish and sea bass, and ran out of worms, so I went home. I didn't see anyone catch any keeper size fish all day. I lucked out with my last stop. Tight lines!!!

Information : Fished with Captain Jack Paul on his Magic and scored big time with 10 longfins and a 180 lb. big eye. Started on the west wall, north of the letters and scored on all the longfins you wanted, all on artificials. Crossed the canyon to the east side where about 6 other boats were and scored with the bigeye on the first turn over the canyon wall. Beat the fish in about 15-20 minutes and cleaned up and headed home. Talk about teamwork, we were the only two on the boat with multiple hook-ups, lost only one fish as a result. We had a bigeye earlier in the day break off and one dropped the ballyho immediately upon hooking up with the one caught.

Water Depth: 600-700 ft
Water Temp.: 73
Information : Made the long run for the Lindy from Sandy Hook for first overnighter of the year. Made it to the edge by 5:30 and proceeded to troll until dusk. Went 8 for 10 on the troll with 30 - 50 lb longfins. All the fish crashed skirted hoos or purple "green machines". Most fish were picked up in 700+ ft of water. Threw the hook out at dark in 600 Ft to try for some on the chunk. Had trouble getting the anchor set so we had to waste some valuable time reseting, while a slow pick of fish was going on around us. Once set for the night we didn't draw a thing to our offerings. First light we trolled up a couple more longfins and headed for home with 10 in the box. All in all a great trip regardless of the slow night of doling out chopped butters.

So I made two drifts in the river to see if I could catch some weakies. Thought I had a big weakie when this huge ( 28 inch ) fluke came up. Caught it on a little jig with a mister twister tail. Since I have tuna in the fridge from a canyon trip I went on last week on another boat, I chucked the big fish back. So go catch it, I let it go about 200 yards from Anglers marina. Good luck

Information : The weakfishing in Delaware Bay has been terrible lately, but my last two trips produced well. Fishing at the Squirrel's Nest, we had constant action and plenty of keeper weakfish on Friday and Sunday. No monsters, but about a 1-3 keeper to throwback ratio ... much better than last week's 1-10. Sunday's trip also produced 3 nice flounder, quite a bonus when anchored up for weakies. Has anybody heard the rumor about the bag limit for flounder going to 3 for next year?

Specie: Weakfish
Size: 12 - 28"
Bait or Lure: sandworms, metal spoons, plastics
Water Depth: 30 - 50 ft.
Water Temp.: ~ 70
Information : Caught as many weaks as we wanted on both Saturday and Sunday. Fish were scattered all throughout the Raritan Reach between buoys # 2 - 10 and also in the terminal channel in front of the Naval weapons station at Earle. On Saturday afternoon (between 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm) my friend, Craig Kimble, and I caught at least 40 - 50 weaks each. Sunday we located schools of bigger weaks, with almost all the fish that we landed and released being over the 22" mark. The 3 biggest ones measured 28", and they were all caught within 10 minutes of one another. Although we caught fish on metal spoons and plastic artificials, sandworms were clearly the top-performing bait. This was some of the easiest fishing I have ever had!

Information : Considering the success on the "troll" portion of "chunk-n-trolls" lately, I would discourage "Troll Only" trips, but I'm glad I didn't talk Jim Sloan, friends & family out of this one! We left Brielle @ midnight for a leisurely cruise to the Hudson & one of the best Longfin bites ever! Nothing happened in the dark, but we had 'em from daylight until we left @ 1, despite being hit by a couple of heavy rain squalls that shut down the bite for an hour at a clip. The boys brought home 8 fish between 40 & 50 lbs, big Albacores & we had a great time fishing with them! Reel Seat Billy Bait bars got the nod when the bite slowed down & the albies loved 'em! Thanks Dave & Grant, you guys are the best! And thanks Bob for mating & helping me clean those #@&%*# fish through the thunder/lightening/rain on Sunday.

Fishing Method: squid strips spearing
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: 12" 14"
Bait or Lure: small two hook rig
Water Depth: 47-56ft
Water Temp.: 72f
Information : Well this was a great day for my son and i. we havent had too many this yearwith the way mother nature has been. Anyway we started out with trolling for bonito and albacore starting just out side the surfline of ibsp. I heard that a guy was hooking up with them so we put out the clark spoons and feathers. but the only action we had was small bluefish in the 2lb range needless to say my 4yr old had a ball. we did get a surprise though one spanish mackeral hit the spoon . after that we went to the reef and caught tons of sea bass and porgys i had a rod set up for fluke but there was no drift so we just had fun with the small stuff. most of the sea bass were decent size biggest was 14". when we got into the porgys my son was catching them two at a time on a winter flonder rig. we probly caught about 40 i lost count. All wich were released. After that i decided to try back at the inlet for weakfish so we went to the second green can in from the ocean i dont remember the #. Anyhow i found the weakfish in schools just off the bottom S>E> of the can in 38 to 40 ft water. only thing was they were all spikes but the highlight of the day was when a 3and half ft THRESHER SHARK yes I did say THRESHER SHARK jumped out of the water 5 times only too realize my sons jig was atatched too it. Well needless too say we lost him but when my son saw that shark he clamped on too my leg and said i dont want to reel him in. And this the one who says he wants to go and catch big makos with his uncle next yr. So after that im glad i dident get the shark to the boat. So we caught a few more weaks and headed for home best day ever this yr. non stop action. tight lines ps you just never know what your going to catch out there!!!!!

Fishing Method: troll
Specie: Little Tunny
Size: 8-18lbs.
Bait or Lure: daisy chains, feathers
Water Depth: 60
Water Temp.: 73
Information : Started at the bottom of the South Ridge. Arrived @ 10:00 a.m. got first knock down by 10:10 a.m. Actually caught seventy-nine false alacore, nothing else. Tried to troll slower, faster, added weght, even tried different lures, could not get any other species to bite. Wish we had a few newcomers, as they will never believe we had non-stop action. Never caught so many, did not know false albacore got that large.

Boat Name: Smokin'
Date Fished: 9/2/2000
Location: Lindenkohl
Fishing Method: Chunking ONLY
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 50-75
Bait or Lure: butterfish, mackeral,bunker
Water Depth: 850
Water Temp.: 78
Information : We hit the fleet of 80+ boats at 8:00PM.I always fish away from fleet, though everybody had fish. Had our first action in 10 minutes. Most fish were close to the boat. 30-60 feet out! My suggestions, forget trolling, it's a waste of time and gas. GEY OUT THERE and start CHUNKING. Bring as much ice as you can handle, you will need every cube! Try using 60 pound line directly to hook without leader.

Boat Name: Pocket Rocket
Date Fished: 9/2/2000
Location: Hambone
Fishing Method: chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40 pounds
Bait or Lure: live peanut bunker
Water Depth: 160 ft
Water Temp.: 75.6
Information : We wanted to leave early Sat morn, but the fog was to heavy. We waited untill 6 am and ran through fog for 15 miles and then another fog bank at 25 off. It cleared. I was trying to get to our last week numbers, but due to our late start the fleet had already built up. We decided to drift and moved to the north of the small fleet that had anchored. First fish caused a overrun and broke off. 2nd one in the box then albacore. Two other bites missed and we did see a White marlin swim by. Yellowfin were under the boat as we came into 135 ft of water. This was a day to overnight, but we had to go home. All bites came on the live peanaut bunker. Chunked with butterfish. Interesting note. Throwing the cast net Monday for live baits for flounder fishing had a Atlantic Moon fish, Look down fish, and three Yellow Jacks. This was at our marina. Tropical water was inside for sure.

Boat Name: Carcharodon
Date Fished: September 1-2
Location: Lindenkohl Canyon
Fishing Method: Troll/chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: to 75 lbs
Bait or Lure: Butterfish/live squid
Water Depth: 580 feet
Water Temp.: 74-81
Information : Good friend & charter client George Bilek had friends & co-workers out for a chunk-n-troll to the Lindenkohl that mirrored the bite @ the Toms. They were treated to a nice catch of large Yellowfin Tuna, all caught on the chunk. For those who were there, it qwas quite unbelievable watching the water temperature drop from 81 to 74 overnight but the bite was still there! Guess it just brought the bait that much closer to the surface, along with getting the Yellowfins in water closer to their favorite (?) temperature. Zippo on the troll...

Twelve may seem like a lot, but each fish was worked for, and these guys were relentless. It is great to fish with guys that go the extra mile to catch fish. I look forward to fishing with them again next year. For those who are interested they run bounty hunter sportfishing out of clarks marina in point pleasant.

Location: 40 fathom
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 60LBS
Bait or Lure: Trolling
Water Depth: 240 feet
Water Temp.: 76.5 to 78.5
Information : Long awaited maiden fishing trip on the new ABC. May I say, a good looking boat. Left Beach Haven @ 3AM, encountered fog outside the inlet-thick, thick, thick. Made day, drove out to the 40 fathom line, inside the Lindencall Canyon, just north of the Fingers. Trolled North, caught several dolphin including on that was 40" . We then had a tuna in the baits for 1 half mile. Finally it hit a spinning rod - great, we had to land a 60 pound yellow fin with a spiining rod. Well Drew just would not let the first tuna go. Mark backed the boat down and in came this yellowfin that I was worried we would never see. We then found a weed line which produced more dolphin. We saw 3 white marlin and a blue marlin jump but none would bite on our lures/baits. It was flat calm and dispite the fog, a better day we could not have had. We made it home with no problems, not bad for the shakedown fishing trip in the newest in the long line of ABC boats. CFP.

Date Fished: 9-2
Location: Seaside - Lavallette
Fishing Method: drifting
Specie: Weakfish
Size: 15" - 4 lbs.
Bait or Lure: large squid - robin strips - snapper strips
Water Depth: 45 - 65 ft.
Water Temp.: 72 - 74 dgs.
Information : Headed south again along with my daughter Lorie and cousin, Dr. Pat. Clearing the Manasquan at 9 am. we found a nearly flat calm ocean. Passing a bunch of boats and a few party boats aboout 3 miles south, continued further. Started our first drift at Lavallette, not much wind, the drift took us on a north track. Catching a variety of fish, croaker, fluke, seabass, weakfish, blues to 3 lbs., and jigging under the bunker schools to catch a few bigger bluefish. Dr. Pat caught the largest weakfish of the day a 4 lbr., Lorie almost always catches the largest fluke, another 4 lbr., and I, cut bait, net fish, straighten out rigs, and clean the boat. As 2 pm. approached the weather began to change as the south east started to blow, and the ocean went from a flat calm to 3 footers in a very short time, but still continuing to get bites, and at 4;30 we headed back to Manasquan with a lot of fish...

Date Fished: 9/2
Location: Barnegate
Fishing Method: drifting
Specie: Weakfish
Size: up to 24"
Bait or Lure: squid and spearing
Water Depth: 52'
Water Temp.:
Information : Started a late afternoon fishing trip out of Barnegate inlet. Went to the reef first and caught a couple of short fluke. After 45 min. we moved to Harvey Cedars Lump. Nothing there but as we drifted closer inshore we started picking up croakers. This is where the party boats were fishing and they were constantly changing spots so they weren't having much luck in finding fluke. Our last stop was the bathing beach on Island Beach. Stopping in 52' feet of water produced one short fluke and nonstop action with weakfish and croakers. Water was a little choppy, plus we were the only boat there. Next weekend,"tuna", till then, tight lines.

Water Depth: 410 ft

At daybreak we added two more yellowfins to the box and headed home at 7:30 am in dead calm seas. Dennis had bragging rights over his sons by subduing the last fish, a 90lber. The other fish were all 40 to 60 lbs. First time mate Mark Bennett had fun with Dennis and his sons and worked hard catching the squid which the fish wanted.

While the bite was late, 3:30 a.m., we had 15 fish in the boat by 5:00 a.m. and the charter retired.
