1999 Fishing Reports

November 28
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Kevin Coffe charter up to the Rocks on Sunday to get in on some late season Bass fishing and found that while 10 keepers were put in the box, fishing is in fact getting tougher. There were not the numnber of shorts as we had been getting all Fall and many of the shorts were smaller than 20".

November 27
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the John Farley charter up to the Rocks on Saturday to get in on some late season Bass fishing and found that while 12 keepers were put in the box, fishing is getting tougher and many of the shorts were smaller than 20".

November 25
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Moondancer crew including owner Lud Bulger and Captain Joe Dalik out on the Canyon Runner, the Moondancer being in Florida for the Sailfish season. Trolling Thanksgiving morning on the Shrewbury Rocks for only a few hours produced 4 keepers to 33" and 25 shorts. Most of the action was on green/white shad rigs.

November 24
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Bill Marchione charter out to the Shrewsbury Rocks and put together another good catch of Bass. Trolling black/white umbrella rigs the charter boated 8 keepers and released 30+ shorts.

November 21
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Andrianne DiBlasi charter from Brick, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Sunday and again found acres of Bass finning on the surface but unresposive to lures and jigs. Trolling did produce a decent catch however as 12 keepers were boated on weighted green/white shad umbrella rigs. In addition 20+ shorts were released.

November 20
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie of the Canyon Runner encounter acres of Bass just outside and south of Manasquan Inlet with the Pete Monati charter. Unfortunately, as everyone who was trying to cast to these fish found they were unresponsive to lure as they appear to be feeding on tiny rainfish. What we did notice was that on the umbrella rigs that we put 10oz of weight and let out 300 feet of wire while trolling in 45 feet of water did produce strikes from almost entirely keeper size Stripers. The total for the day included 8 keepers to 37" with only 10 shorts. Not the type of fishing we have come accustomed to but not bad.

November 19
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Pat Ryan charter back out on Friday for another day of Striper fishing and put together another excellent catch. Trolling south of Manasquan Inlet near Bay Head 12 Stripers were boated between 29" and 36". In addition 30+ shorts were released.

November 18
Adam LaRosa reports:
It just keeps getting better and better. Captains Phil Dulanie and Jim Rivelli (Calypso) had the Pat Ryan charter from Cherry Hill, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Thursday for Stripers and loaded up. Trolling around Asbury/Deal we boated 31 keepers release 15 between 29 and 31 inches. The majority of the keepers we took back to the dock were over 30 inches with the largest 35" and almost 20 pounds. In addition 35+ shorts were released. The action was non-stop and we limited out in 1 1/2 hours and were releasing keepers by 10:00 a.m. While the Bass ate anything we pulled, green/white and black/white shad were the most popular.

November 17
Adam LaRosa reports:
Just when we thought Tuesday was the best Fall day we were going to have with big Striper Bass Captain Phil Dulanie and Captain Jim Rivelli (Calypso) were pleasantly surprised on Wednesday as the Dennis Luczajko charter from Wayne, PA proved that maybe the best is yet to come. Trolling the Canyon Runner in the area of the Shrewsbury Rocks with shad umbrella rigs we limited out around noon with 16 Striped Bass with the large majority between 32 and 38 inches. In addition we boated 25+ shorts but again could have loaded the boat with shorts to the south but chose to hang out with the big boys.

November 16
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie once again fishing in the hard Northwesterly winds, had the Dan Black charter from Philadelphia, PA out on the Canyon Runner Tuesday and had the best day of the Fall season thus far with big Bass. Trolling around the Shrewsbury Rocks we quickly limited out with 12 Stripers most between 31 - 35 inches and continued fishing releasing another 4 keepers and 30 shorts in what proved to be non-stop action. We have found that while we could catch unlimited numbers of shorts closer to the inlet we are continuing to run to the Shrewsbury Rocks area as for the last three days we have found the big fish concentrated in one particular area.

November 15
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Jim Patterson charter from Abott labs out on the Canyon Runner Monday and had a great day of trolling the linesiders on the Shrewsbury Rocks. Trolling in 40 knot Northwestly winds was a chore but the charter stuck it out and we boated 11 keeepers to 34 inches. In addition a couple dozen shorts were also boating and released. All the action was again on shad umbrella rigs of black/yellow and black/white.

November 14
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captains Phil Dulanie and Joe Dalik (Moondancer) had the Canyon Runner back up to the Shrewsbury Rocks on Sunday with the John Welch charter and had another excellant catch of Stripers. Trolling blue/white shad umbrella rigs in 40 feet of water produced 35+ Stripers with 11 keepers up to 34". The Bass were caught throughout the day on both sides of the tide.

November 13
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captains Phil Dulanie and James Rivelli (Calypso) had the Canyon Runner up to the Shrewbury Rocks with the Leroy Arms charter from Washington D.C. for a morning of Striped Bass trolling and boated a couple keepers amongst 20 shorts. The action was on blue/white shad umbrella rigs. Tired of trolling the charter wanted to get in some bottom fishing so we set up on the Sea Girt reef and spent the afternoon catch 50+ Porgies, some Sea Bass and 1 keeper Blackfish. The happy charter headed home with a variety of table fare.

November 12
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Dave Tolchin charter from Sayreville up to the Shrewsbury Rocks on the Canyon Runner Friday and were back at the dock early with another nice catch of Bass. Trolling umbrella rigs of black/white shad produced all 6 keepers to 32" in 5 hours of fishing. In addition, 30 shorts and numerous Bluefish were boated and released.

November 10
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner back up to the Ambrose Channel on Wednesday with the Dan Miller charter from Seally Mattress as there were no Bass on the Shrewsbury Rocks as the day before. However, once the lines were in the water in the channel the action was non-stop as 35 shorts were boated and release and 10 keepers were brought back to the dock, the largest just over 20 pounds.

November 9
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captains Phil Dulanie and Joe Dalik had the Tom Rhinesmith charter from Scotch Plains, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Tuesday and found the Bass had finally moved down the beach. Stopping short of Ambrose Channel, where we had been fishing, we marked fish at the Shrewsbury Rocks and had a keeper on the first jig thrown in the water. Jigging produced 4 keepers and 15 shorts in just under an hour. Once the action settled we went on the troll and boated an additional 4 keepers to 18 pounds and another 20 shorts. Most of the trolling action was just north of the Rocks and the fish once again went for the shad Umbrella Rigs of black/white and blue/white.

November 7
Adam LaRosa reports:
The Frank Cardaci charter was aboard the Canyon Runner on Sunday and Captain Phil Dulanie with Captain Joe Dalik (Moondancer) helping out in the cockpit put together a solid catch of Stripers. Trolling once again between Ambrose Channel with shad umbrella rigs the charter boated 25 Bass with 8 keepers to 17 pounds as well as a bunch of Bluefish. While a great day was had by all, the 35 knot NorthWest winds produced steep waves at the mouth of Raritan Bay which on the downside made fishing tough. However, on the the upside, the crowd that we were forced to fished in on Saturday was no where to be found and it was like fishing in the middle of the week, "alone again, naturally."

November 6
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captains Phil Dulanie and Joe LaRosa had the Jersey Shore Diesel charter from Pt. Pleasant, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Saturday and put together a great fall Bass trip. Trolling between the Ambrose Channel for the entire day, we boated 60+ Stripers with 12 keepers. The largest was a fat 34 inch Bass weighing-in at 22 pounds and was caught at the same time as a 31 inch bass on a Black/White shad umbrella rig. In addition, at least a dozen bluefish were also boated and released.

November 5
Adam LaRosa reports:
On Friday the Alan Funk charter from Livingston, NJ was taken out on the Canyon Runner for a half day of Striper fishing. Capt. Phil Dulanie did not start fishing in between Ambrose Channel until 11:00 a.m. but had 8 keepers and 25 shorts in no time and was back at the dock by 3 p.m. Most of the action was on Black/White shad rigs trolled in 40 feet of water.

November 1
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Chris Stevens charter from Vally Forge, PA out on the Canyon Runner Monday and got into a good pile of fish. Trolling by the Ambrose channel with black/white and blue/white shad we boated 30+ Stripers with 6 keepers to 17 pounds. Most of the action occurred on the outgoing tide and we read a lot more fish than we hooked. It seems the Bass are feeding on rain fish and are not hitting the shad that readily.

October 31
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Al Bond had the Drew Tomaki charter from Collegeville, PA out on the Canyon Runner for Halloween and had a "Hell" of a day. Trolling, quite fittingly in the "eerie" fog for most of the day, the charter non-the-less put a "scare" into the Stripers as 45 Bass were boated. However, most of the fish were shorts. Once we moved off to deeper water, however, we located the bigger fish and ended the day with 8 keepers to 19 pounds. In addition, several dozen bluefish were boated and released.

October 30
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had Mike Zajac-Pt. Pleasant, NJ and Bill Rowan-Middletown, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Saturday in the fog for Stripers and had solid action through-out the day. Trolling from the Shrewbury Rocks up to the Ambrose Channel we boated 40+ Bass with 9 keepers. All of the keepers were caught trolling however we spent a large portion of the day jigging and casting poppers and had great action with all shorts.

October 29
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Mike Sutter charter from Linden, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Friday and had another great day with the Stripers. Trolling in the vicinity of the Shrewsbury Rocks with black and white and blue and white shad rigs we boated 35+ Bass, 21 were keepers however we only kept our limit with the biggest Bass pushing 25 pounds. The action was non-stop all day on the troll. Despite the furious action on the troll, the Bass never came up so that we could cast to them, we even tried jigging while stopped and fighting fish but the Bass only wanted the umbrella rigs.

October 28
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Tom O'Brien charter out for a day of Striper fishing but instead of the typical trolling umbrella rigs which we have been successful with lately, the charter opted to solely stick with casting and jigging no matter what the outcome. Marking fish all day long we picked at Bluefish, catching a couple dozen and some short Bass all morning. However, once the tide changed the Bass came up and we boated 7 keepers and 10 shorts all on surface lures and shad rigged on jig heads. The biggest of the Bass pushed 20 pounds and provided a great fight on extremely light tackle.

October 27
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Chris Wood charter from SG Cowen Securities, Manhattan out on the Canyon Runner Wednesday and put the group into a good catch of Stripers. Trolling Umbrella rigs in 40' of water in the vicinity of the Shrewsbury Rocks, the charter boated 9 Bass between 30"-33" and release several other shorts. In addition a dozen Bluefish were also caught and released. Most of the action was on black and white shad umbrella rigs.

October 25
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie took one last shot at Bluefin in the Mudhole with Shawn Mallory, the only member of the charter, but to no avail. Chunking all day produced nothing but a few run offs. The rest of the year we will be sticking with the Stripers and enjoying what has already been a great year for Bass, with the best yet to come.

October 24
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Mike Zajac had the John Farley charter from Baltimore, Maryland out on the Canyon Runner Sunday Striper fishing and put together a solid catch. Trolling in the vacinty of the Shrewsbury Rocks with Umbrella rigs we boated 20+ Bass and 25+ Bluefish. While only 6 Bass made the 28" limit the action was enough to excite the anglers into making another trip from Baltimore in November to get in on some Thanksgiving Week Striper fishing. The one thing which should be noted is that we were marking fish thick all day but they only bit for a short time. In fact we foul hooked a few Bass in the back, which only proves that they must be stacked-up waiting for the water temp. to drop just a little bit more before they turn-on.

October 23
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie & Adam LaRosa with Canyon Runner mates Brad Burgess, Mike Zajac and Billy the Kid took a personal day on the Canyon Runner to fish the Jersey Coast Shark Anglers Striped Bass Tournament. The action was solid as we boated 25+ Stripers with 11 Keepers up to 33" Unfortunately as usual the big one got away. All of the action was on Umbrella rigs trolled in 40' of water around Shrewsbury Rocks. But this was a great sign of what should come for the fall Striper season in November as we marked tons of fish all day.

October 22
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Jim Pertusis charter from Linden, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Friday and put together a "Mid Atlantic" Grand Slam. Starting the day in the Mudhole we quickly boated 2 Bluefin around 30 pounds which were released. In addition we had a few Bonita and Bluefish mixed in. Heading inshore when the action died we put out the Umbrella rigs at the Shrewsbury rocks and boated a few Stripers with 2 keepers in only an hour of fishing. On our way home we jig several more bluefish and a Weakfish.

October 20
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Dave Fiegenbaum charter out to Monster Ledge on Wednesday. Fishing on the western edge of the hole only a few Bluefin were hooked with only 1 boated and released. Moreover, the abundance of bait we had for the last two days disappeared. Hopefully this is not the end of the inshore tuna season but it does not look good.

October 19
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and Mate Al Bond had the Shawn Mallory charter from A&K Exchange out on the Canyon Runner Tuesday for a day of inshore Bluefin action. However, the action was not as good as Sunday, possible due to Monday's Northeaster. However a good time was had by all as we did manage to catch and release 3 Bluefin up to 30 pounds and added a few Bonita for the dinner table, losing a few others.

October 17
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie on the Canyon Runner has switched his attention from yellowfin in the Canyon to Bluefin in the Mudhole but has not missed a step. Chunking in the Hole on Sunday in the fog with the Jim Lister charter from Cherry Hill, NJ we were into Bluefin all day. With Captain James Rivelli (Calypso) assisting in the cockpit, the charter boated and released 25 Bluefins. Most of the Bluefins were around 30 pounds but a couple 40 inch and 50+ pounders were also mixed in. In addition, 10 Bonita were boated for the dinner table.

October 15
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Ed Bresnahan charter from Philadelphia, PA out for the first of many fall Striped Bass charters on the Canyon Runner Friday and found the fish where we left them in the Spring before all the Canyon trips. Trolling umbrella rigs in 40 feet of water we boated 25 Bass but only 3 keepers. In addition we had a couple dozen Bluefish. The Bass only bit for a two hour time period around high tide despite reading them all day. Once the water temperature cools some more it may be another great fall fishery like last year.

October 12-13
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Kevin Corradino charter from Pt. Pleasant out on the Canyon Runner Wednesday and put together another excellent catch. Drifting on the East Wall we had fish on immediately and limited out with 21 fish in 3 hours. The action was non-stop with 2 and 3 fish on at a time. Weary from the non-stop action the charter elected to head home early and we were back in the dock less than 12 hours from when we left.

October 8-9
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Tom & Rick Galiardo charter from Harrisburg, PA, with Bill Coffey Sr. & Jr. and Cory Gable from Maryland out on the Canyon Runner Friday to Saturday and got into a solid pick of Yellowfin in the Hudson Canyon. Anchoring in 450' of water the charter had fish on most of the night and limited out with 21 Yellowfin by the time we pulled the anchor. Unlike the trip before, we went right to the temperature break and had fish immediately.

October 7-8
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Dave Hunt charter from Holmdel, NJ out for a Thursday-Friday overnighter on the Canyon Runner and found that the great yellowfin bite prior to the blow had slowed. Fishing the same area as before the blow the charter picked fish throughout the night but only boated 5, lossing as many, when the night was over. Expecting at least a good morning bite to help fill the coolers we remained on anchor until 8:30 a.m. but to no avail.

October 7
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Dan Miller charter from Seelly Mattress out on the Canyon Runner for an inshore tuna trip. Anchoring in 150' feet of water at Monster Ledge the charter enjoyed a steady pick of False Albacore. Unfortunately, the Bluefins did not cooperate as only 2 were boated and released. However, a great time was had with the Albacore as we geared down the tackle and enjoyed catching and releasing over 20 of these great fighters.

October 2-3
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Max Berry had the Frank Atkinson charter from ASA Apple, Inc. Edison, NJ out to the Hudson Canyon on the Canyon Runner and had the trip of a lifetime. Getting to the edge by 4:30 p.m. we put the boat on the drift where we had 48 Yellowfin the day before. Within 5 minutes we had fish on and boated a couple but three boats trolling circles around us immediately stopped in our slick and dropped anchor the second they saw us hooked-up. Knowing this would immediately shut down the fishing we continued to drift away from them but in so doing threw 2 flats of butterfish over within 20 minutes and kept the fish with us. The two man charter plus the captain and mate each had 3 fish by 7:00 p.m., however, both anglers continuously fought fish until 11:30 p.m. and proceeded to catch and released 46 additional Yellowfin. The total catch for the trip was an amazing 58 Yellowfin for the two man charter. The key, as usual, is getting off by yourself and finding your own fish, everyone should practice this technique, its deadly. By the way, the three boats that anchored in our slick ended the night with 9 fish between the three of them.

October 1-2
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Jim Bouton charter from Rochester, NY out on the Canyon Runner and put together a good catch despite several strikes against us. First, due to the fact that we had to wait for one of the charters we left 2 hours late and missed the early bite, not getting to the Canyon until 10 p.m. Second the crowd of boats made finding a open area tough. Once we anchored we picked a couple fish throughout the night and really had them going in the morning when a dragger ran right up our slick almost running us down. Nearly missing the boat, they got our anchor line and cut us off taking 1500' of anchor line 50' of chain and a $300 anchor, but most importantly, chased the Yellowfin out of our slick and leaving us with a shaken up crew who thought the dragger was going to sink us. We did end up with 7 yellowfin and a few nice Dolphin.

September 28-29
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and Mate Scott Lisowski had the Dr. John Bedner charter from Cherry Hill, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Tuesday to Wednesday. In what has been an outstanding Canyon Season for the Canyon Runner (400+ Tuna and 14 Billfish) this trip was by far the best. Arriving at the edge at 5:00 p.m. we had the fish on top breaking water and with not a ripple on the Ocean nor a puff of wind we decided to drift. Great decision! We had fish on immediately and limited out with 18 Yellowfin on our first drift before Sunset. Once is got dark we continued to pull fish as soon as the baits hit the water and throughout the night released another 30 fish during our second drift. In total the charter and crew caught 48 Yellowfin and what made it even better was the fish were not the small 30 to 50 pounders but were all between 50 and 70 pounds with some pushing 80 pounds.

September 26-27
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Phil Ludlow charter from Holmdel, NJ out to the Hudson Canyon for a Sunday-Monday overnighter and loaded the boxes with Yellowfin. Electing not to troll and going right to the anchor we had were marking fish immediately and as soon as it got dark we quickly went 6 for 6 on Yellowfin before the action slacked off until 11:00 p.m. Thereafter it was a steady pick with a fish on every 20 minutes with a blitz at sunrise. In total, 18 fish were boated with a bunch more fought only to be lost in battle. Most of the fish were hooked on working rods up high in the slick as the charter stayed up all night and the worked the rods like pros.

September 25-26
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Dave Tolchin party from Sayrville, NJ out on the Canyon Runner for a Saturday-Sunday overnighter. Normally we refuse to fish in the Canyon on Saturday night and this trip again showed us that we should stick to that strategy. The Hudson Canyon was loaded with over 100+ boats on both sides and while a few boats did great, it was a struggle on others as the crowd, as usual, hurt the fishing. For us, we immediately had fish in the slick when we anchored and boated a couple Yellowfins only to have 3 boats troll with 100 yards of us right through the slick and another anchor even closer, and thus we lost the fish. We did pick a few more throughout the night but we never had the blitz we were looking for. However, we still ended up heading home with a half dozen nice Yellowfin.

September 23
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had to cancel an overnighter with the Joe Guzzo charter from Allentown, PA due to weather and instead took them inshore for Bluefish, Weakfish and Stripers. Unfortunately only the Blues cooperated as dozens were boated during the trip. The charter however had a blast enjoying the flat seas close to the Beach as the Northwest winds "hopefully" blows itself out for the weekend.

September 20,21
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie was back out to the Hudson Canyon with the Frank Atkinson charter from Rochester, NY and had the Canyon Runner on the edge of the continental shelf by 8:00 p.m. However, the fish did not cooperate until after midnight. Afraid we made a bad decision by not going to Toms Canyon (Where we had 14 the night before) we almost pulled the to head there but we stuck it out and the decision paid off. From 12:30 to 6:00 we had 35 fish on and boated 23 Yellowfin between 50 and 80 pounds and broke off a small Swordfish. We were back at the dock by 10:00 a.m.

September 19,20
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Mike Zajac had the Canyon Runner out to the Toms Canyon (as cold water seems to have infiltrated the Hudson) with the Joe Latona charter from Brooklyn, NY. No action occurred on the troll but drifting quickly produce a 3 for 5 bite on 70 pound Yellowfin and we soon anchored up and picked fish all night. The action was consistent on anchor as we had fish on most of the night putting 14 Yellowfin in the boat by morning. The highlight of the niight was a 90 pound Swordfish, our 14th Billfish of the year and 3rd Swordfish. Of the 14 Billfish, this one was the only one not released. While most of the action was on live squid, we did jig 4 Yellowfin as well.

September 14,15
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and Mates Scott Lisowski & Pauly Pietraszka had the Canyon Runner back out to the Hudson for one more trip, before Hurricane Floyd makes its appearance, with the Shawn Mallory charter from Chatham, NJ and put together a solid catch of Yellowfin on the chunk. Fishing Tuesday into Wednesday we started out trolling but it proved unproductive as only Skipjack were caught. Setting up to chunk on the West Wall we waited until mid-night for the first bite but after that the action was non-stop with a bite ever 15 or so minutes. When the action settle just before sunrise and we had 12 Yellowfin all over 70 pounds on ice. The action was on the West Wall of the Hudson in 500 feet of water. It should be noted that the anglers on this trip were extraordinary as they listen to every piece of advice we gave them and boated every fish that was hooked-up without losing one.

September 12,13
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Tim Hughes charter from Pt. Pleasant out to the Hudson Canyon on Sunday into Monday and put together a decent catch which included a variety of species. Trolling Sunday afternoon produces a bunch of Skipjack but no Tuna. Setting up to chunk on the West Wall we immediately caught and released a 20 pound Mako and within an hour released a 30 pound Swordfish. The Yellowfin showed up by 11:00 p.m. and we had a slow pick putting 4 of 5 in the boat by morning and released a Blueshark and had some Mahi-Mahi. On the troll in the Morning we quickly went 2 for 2 on longfin which hit Jet lures. All in all a solid catch. The best part of trip was the fact that it was the best weather and sea condidtions we have had all year.

September 11
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner back out to the Hudson for a one day troll trip and put together one of the better trolling catches in a while. Unable to get out to chunk overnight due to Friday's weather, we left at 3:00 am and decided to troll. The choice was a good one as 18 tuna were fought. We ended up with 7 longfin and 3 yellowfin to 80 pounds and lost 8 tuna due to the rough conditions. Most of the tuna hit Reel Seat Spreader Bars and Jets.

September 8,9
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and Captain James Rivelli (Calypso) had the Canyon Runner back out to the Hudson Canyon Thursday to Friday with the Russel and Mark Poole charter. The crew and the charter loaded the boxes with big Yellowfin to 80 pounds and were back on their way home by 3:00 a.m., to beat the cold front approaching for the weekend. Getting to the canyon at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday we immediately set up on the anchor and started chunking. The first fish turned on by 8:00 p.m. and we quickly had 2 in the boat. The action slacked off for an hour then all hell broke loose as 3 fish at a time were hooked-up and we had fish in the slick at all times. By 2:00 a.m. the boxes were full with 15 big Yellowfin. Bigger than the normal 40 pounders we have been catching as these fish averaged between 60-70 pounds. At 3:00 a.m. we pulled the anchor and by the time the charter awoke we were back at the dock.

August 27-28
Adam LaRosa reports:
Angler Name : Adam LaRosa
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Marty Keegan charter from Warwick, NY out to the Hudson Canyon Saturday and put together yet another great catch. Chunking in 600 feet of water the Canyon Runner had steady action through the night with a few surprises. First off, most of the fish we chunked were Longfin, 7 altoghether, while we have chunked a few Longfin in the past normally at dusk or dawn, we never had steady action throughout the night with them. In addition we boated 3 Yellowfin to 60 pounds and lost 5 others. The second surprise came when mate Mike Zajak from Pt. Pleasant, NJ hooked what he thought was a Mahi Mahi. When Vince Albrecht reeled in the fish it was a 10-pound "Marlin." It looked identical to a Blue Marlin except for an extremely long bill. Once developed, the pictures of the "Marlin" will appear on our web-site at www.canyonrunner.com for those interested. The "Marlin" was released unharmed.

August 27
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Alex Herrera charter from Manhattan, NY out on the Canyon Runner for a day of inshore tuna trolling. It appears that the tuna that were around before the Northeaster last week have moved out as we encounter none from the fingers to the Resor to Little Italy. However, we saved the day as we moved inshore to just east of Manasquan Ridge and spent two hours with constant action with Little Tuna (False Albacore) Skipjack, Bonita and Mahi Mahi.

August 24-25
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner back out to the Hudson Canyon with the Wayne Ferris charter from Brick, NJ and put together yet another double digit catch of tuna. Arriving on the edge at 4:00 p.m. we decided to avoid trolling and start chunking during daylight. The decision proved beneficial as we boated one 90 pound yellowfin and missed two others and hooked and fought a White Marlin which also broke off all before night fall. However, at night is when the action really got hot as constant action throughout the evening including shots of 2 and 3 fish on at once provided for an early ride home with all the boxes full of 20 yellowfin. In additon, several others were hooked and fought only to gain their freedom.

August 23
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Brad Burgess had the Canyon Runner back out to edge with the Frank LaRosa charter and his clients from Soloman Smith Barney in Red Bank, N.J. This was the 20th Canyon Trip this year on the Canyon Runner and proved to be another exciting trip. Setting up to chunk in 600 feet of water produced a couple of fish in the first few hours but not the hot bite we expected. Called over by the crew on the Purple Jet (We can not Thank them enough) and tied off behind them, once we were set up the fish soon arrive. In the course of 1 hour we hooked over 25 yellowfin between 40 and 60 pounds and boated 18. Trolling in the morning for 1 hour produced nothing.

August 20
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner again set up to chunk before sun up with the Al Hague charter from Budd Lake, NJ and had fish on immediately. The first couple fish were baited on 30 pound test and were broke off but eventually a nice 50 pound yellowfin hit the deck along with a nice bull dolphin and a few skip jack. The real excitement came when mate Brad Burgess (have withdrawal from not being in the Canyon in three days) baited a White Marlin on a butterfish. The Marlin was fought on 30 pound stand gear at anchor and was eventually leader for pictures and released after a 20 minute fight including a dozen jumps. That makes the 9th Marlin caught on the Canyon Runner year to date.

August 19
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out to Little Itlay with the Brad Wilson Charter from Manhattan and were set up to chunk before sun up. They immediately had fish in the slick and boated 2 and broke off others before 8:00 am. With the fish boiling at the back of the boat and 4 of the charters sick in the cabin we decide to let the "fish off the hook" and pulled the hook and headed home very early with a few sick passengers.

August 18
Adam LaRosa reports:
With the Canyon Trolling a wash out we the Canyon Runner decide to take its last two schedule one day troll trips inshore to try and cash in one the Yellowfin which have made an appearance on the local lumps. Setting up with the Andy Straton charter by sun up we boated several dolphin, skipjack and had our shot a a few yellowfin, putting a 40 pounder in the boat.

August 17
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie tried the Canyon Trolling one more time before turning his sights to chunking and once again found only Dolphin. Its seems the tuna will not come up through the green and hot water and will only bite at night on the chunck as the boats chunking again caught well. We trolled from the Toms Canyon to the Lindencol and only found a load of dolphin around a few of the pots.

August 16
Adam LaRosa reports:
Once the wind stopped blowing Captain Phil Dulanie took the Dan Black charter from Phil. PA out to the Toms Canyon and again found the tuna uncooperative. Trolling for 8 hours produced only a half dozen large Dolphin up to 20 pounds but no Tuna or Marlin. The green water in the Hudson has worked its way down the shelf and the only tuna we heard boated on the troll was a three bagger of Big-Eyes by a boat in the Mid-Atlantic. The chunking at night however is automatic as boats from the Hudson to Wilmington had fish.

August 13
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Steve Curley charter from Boston, Mass out on the Canyon Runner for a one day troll and found the tuna unresponsive. Trolling from the Toms down to the Carterett produced only a couple of Longfin and a white marlin which jumped off. In addition another Blue Marlin was fought only to break off at the leader.

August 12
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and Mate Brad Burgess snuck the Canyon Runner out to the Carteret Canyon with the Steve Reily charter before the wind begins to blow this weekend and were rewarded with an excellent offshore catch. Trolling in the Carteret Canyon on the edge of the Blue and Green bodies of water out on the edge, the charter fought and release 1 White Marlin, boated a few Yellowfin to 50 pounds and dozens of dolphin. The action however did not stop there. The first Blue Marlin of 500+ pounds showed up around 1:00 p.m. and ate a Green Machine behind a bird. The fight lasted only 10 minutes however as the Blue Marlin won by jumping on the main line and broking off. The Second Blue Marlin showed just as we entered the Green Water and were about to pull the lines out ending the day. Burgess spotted the Big Blue rising up to a Sea Witch/Ballyhoo combination, baited the Blue and Dulanie gunned the engines setting the hook. The fight ensued this time for 30 minutes with the Canyon Runner winning as a Blue of about 300+ pounds was leader, pictures taken and released. That makes for the 8th Marlin caught and released by the Canyon Runner this year. Not bad for New Jersey.

August 10
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and Mate Brad Burgess had the Canyon Runner back out to the Toms Canyon after waiting out the blow Sunday and Monday by bluefishing inshore. However what they found was that the Longfin they had by the dozens Saturday had moved out of the Toms Canyon and were no where to be found. The Tom O'Brian charter from Holmdel, NJ did have an action packed day however as a couple yellowfin to 50 pounds and dolphin to 20 pounds kept everyone busy. The highlight again however was when Mate Burgess baited a nice White Marlin at the transome and Tom O'Brien enjoyed releasing his first Marlin. Another White was baited but failed to feel the sting of the hook.

August 9
Adam LaRosa reports:
With the wind still blowing Captain Phil Dulanie and the Canyon Runner had to turn another one day canyon trip into an inshore trip and the Dr. Dante Implicito charter had a great day chumming on the Shrewsbury Rocks. Non-stop action produced dozens of huge bluefish to 12+ pounds on light tackle chumming chunking butterfish on the high bottom.

August 8
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie on the Canyon Runner had to turn a one day canyon trip into an inshore trip as the winds were screaming and the Frank Cardaci charter got into a nice bite of Dolphin around Little Italy before cutting the trip short due to the weather.

August 7
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and Mate Brad Burgess on the Canyon Runner were back out to the Toms Canyon for the 4th canyon trip in 5 days with the Randy Folger charter (their 2nd trip in 5 days) and put together one of the best one day totals this year. Leaving late as we waited for the wind to lay down, we did not start trolling until 8:00 a.m., however within 15 minutes we had a White Marlin on which eventual jump off then before we had all the lines out we hook-up to a 400+ pound Blue Marlin which was fought for 15 minutes only to be lost as well. Then the action got good. We quickly went 2 for 3, 2 for 2 and 2 for 3 on Longfin before Noon. The Afternoon bite was even better as we went 5 for 6, 3 for 4 and 2 for 2 to head home with 16 Longfin. The action was all on small Jet lures trolled as close to the boat as possible with an occasional fish caught on a green machine behind a bird. Both Marlin were baited on ballyhoo be Burgess.

August 6
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and the Canyon Runner took a well deserved break from Canyon fishing and took the Tina Day charter from London, England up to the Mud Buoy for a day of Bluefishing. The action was "bloody" exceptional as 80 blues were boated and released by the group, which include 3 Children between the ages of 7 and 11.

August 5
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had his streak of good trips come to an end as the Canyon shut down on Thursday. The Bill Marconi charter experienced a lack of tuna and marlin and the trip was bailed out with a loan of Dolphin caught inshore of the Toms on the several dozen lobster pots lining the 50 fathom curve.

August 4
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Randy Folger charter from Middletown, NJ out to the Toms Canyon on Wednesday and found the fishing had turned off. Trolling the same area as the day before which produced 14 Longfin, only the charter only went 1 for 3 on Longfin today. However, mate Brad Burgess once again saved the day as he baited a White Marlin which came up behind a Reel Seat Spreader Bar and Randy enjoyed a nice fight as the fish was boated, pictures taken and released. The action was at the tip of Toms Canyon

August 3
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Brad Burgess and Mike Zajak had the Joe Connely charter from Manhattan, NY out to the Toms Canyon on the Canyon Runner Tuesday and returned with another excellent catch. Turning away from the Hudson Canyon as green water moved in and boats had returned home with few if any fish, we headed to the Toms Canyon and had fish on as soon as the lines went in the water at 6:30 a.m. Longfin again provided the action and we quickly put 6 out of 8 Longfin in the boat before 9:00 a.m. in addition to one Bull Dolphin. The bite slacked off until 11:00 then things really got good. We loaded up the rods with 6 longfin putting 4 in the boat and within 15 minutes had five more on putting 4 in the boat. The charter could reel no more and decided to head home early at noon with 14 Longfin on ice. The action took place along the 500 fathom line of Toms Canyon and very small jet lures seemed to be what the fish wanted to eat.

August 1
Adam LaRosa reports:
The crew of the Canyon Runner took a day off of work to bring their wives, mothers, girlfriends and brother to the Hudson Canyon for a one day trolling trip and had an outstanding day despite the tough conditions. Trolling in the Hudson was particluraly slow and frustrating in the morning as several schools of Longfin were constantly feeding on the surface chasing bait out of the water, however, the over abundance of boats due to the weekend turned the fish off. However, we were lucky enough to troll over a few schools that did bite and had 6 Longfin in the boat by noon. The afternoon bite was another story as the fish turned on at 1:00 and we went 4 for 5 and 4 for 6 and headed home with 14 Longfin. What was particular exciting about putting up those numbers is that 3 women Melissa Dulanie (16), Randi Hills (20), and Jean Burgess (51) fought and boated 10 of the Longfin, with Jean catch 4 and Randi and Melissa taking 3 each, all on stand-up tackle. So much for Canyon Fishing being a "Macho" sport. Marsha Biermann would have been proud. David Wirtenberg took care of the rest of the Longfins. All of the action was on the West Wall of the Hudson and the hot lures were very small Green and Black Jets.

July 31
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had a slow day in the Hudson Canyon with the Jim Patterson charter from Abott Labs boating only 1 Longfin and losing a few others. However, mate Brad Burgess saved the day as he drew a White Marlin off a Real Seat Spreader Bar and had it eat a Ballyhoo which was attached to our pitch-rod which is a 30lb Class outfit. Jim spent the next 15 minutes fighting one of the best fighting White Marlin we have ever caught before Burgess billed the fish for pictures and the release. This was the fifth White Marlin this week and the most important, as we did not see another fish the rest of the day.

July 30
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Brad Burgess had a great trip to the Hudson Canyon on Saturday with the Dave Tolkin charter from Monmouth Beach, NJ as the fish seemed to be in the pattern all day. The early bite produced 2 Longfin, 1 Yellowfin and 1 White Marlin release. The White was the fourth Marlin this week. The afternoon bite was even better however as it started with 8 rods hooked-up to Longfin and we boated 7. We then went 3 for 4 and 3 for 3 on additional Longfin putting the 16th tuna in the boat before spending 45 minutes fighting an estimated 700+ pound Blue Marlin which we eventually broke off. All of the action was on the East Wall of the Hudson Canyon and most of the fish took single lures as the Spreader Bars for once did not catch.

July 29
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner back up to the Mud Bouy with the Stuart Lazur charter and put together a fine catch of blues and was back at the dock early as the charter could no longer fight any more fish. Chumming the high bottom at the Mud Bouy produce constant action with 2 and 3 fish on at a time.

July 28
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner up to the Mud Bouy on Wednesday and put together a great catch of Blues with the Marty Shannon charter from Staten Island. Chumming with light tackle provided non-stop action as 75 Blues were boated with most released.

July 27
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and Mate Brad Burgess had the Canyon Runner back out to the canyons on Tuesday with the Stanly Gola charter from Pt. Pleasant, NJ. However, as the action slowed considerably in the Toms Canyon they headed to the Hudson Canyon. The move did not make a difference as the boats in the Toms all ran up to the Hudson to get in on our early bite of Longfin that turned out to be the only bite. We immediately had 4 Longfin on as soon as we got to the Hudson boating 2, but we never found the tuna again. We did manage numerous large dolphin include a couple Bulls. It seems that the almost 80 degree water has hurt the fishing as the Tuna just would not stay up and bite except for very early in the day and there is little bait on no whales to be found.

July 26
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out to the Toms Canyon on Monday with the Guy Biondi charter and got into a nice bite of White Marlin. Trolling the eastern edge of the Toms, Mate Brad Burgess baited the first White within 20 minutes of trolling. The fish came up behind a Reel Seat Spreader Bar and was baited by Burgess on a naked ballyhoo as he pulled the Bar away. Immediately thereafter another White was missed and then the charter spent 15 minutes fighting and boating a 125 pound yellowfin. The action let up until 11:00 when another 120 pound yellowfin crashed a Green Machine Bar. As the boat was taken out of gear to fight the fish, another White Marlin came up behind a Reel Seat Squid Bar and Burgess baited him from the idled boat. The White was quickly released and the fight continued on the yellowfin which was eventual boated.

July 24
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Pat Ryan charter from Chester, PA out on the Canyon Runner Saturday and put together an excellent catch of Bluefin Tuna. Fishing just South and West of the Resor Wreck we loaded up with skipjack and bonita as soon as the lines went in the water and had over 20 in the first hour. Eventualy the Tuna turned on and we boated 5 up to 35 pounds before Noon, keeping 2 and releasing the rest. The real excitement came 15 minutes before we were to leave as 5 rods went off and all were Bluefin. All the fish were boated and were between 25 and 30 pounds, pictures were taken and they were all released. The action was all on Reel Seat Mini Mambe Bars.

July 23
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Rob Becker charter from Stavola Contractors in Middletown, NJ out to the Toms Canyon and put the group into some fish. Unfortunately, due to the weatherman announcing the chance of Severe Thunderstorms with 70 mile an hour winds we, as well as most boats fishing the Canyon, headed home early and only fished 4 hours. Well the weatherman was wrong, as usual, however we did put the group into fish as they boated a Yellowfin of 115 pounds and 2 nice Longfin. The action was on Reel Seat Squid Bars and Jets.

July 22
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out for another day of Tuna trolling only today we fished inshore around and just south of the Resor. Fishing with the Jim Frank charter from Cherry Hill, NJ we had action all day with Bluefin Tuna, Skipjack, Bonita and Dolphin. The charter boated 3 Bluefin, releasing 1 and keeping 2 in the 40+ pound range. The action with the Bluefins was mostly on Reel Seat Mini Mamba Bars. We also had 20+ Skipjack and Bonita in addition to 1 dolphin.

July 21
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and the Canyon Runner were back out to Toms Canyon for the fifth day in a row on Wednesday and put together another great catch of Tuna. Fishing with the Mike Walsh charter from Allentown, PA, the Canyon Runner picked away at Longfin all day ending with 9 Longfin between 25 and 50 pounds. The highlight of this trip was a 100+ Yellowfin which grabbed a Reel Seat Squid Bar but was quickly subdued by Mike and boated. All of the action occurred south of the Toms Canyon as the bait and whales we have been fishing with are on the move out of Toms Canyon and down the shelf.

July 19-20
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Brad Burgess had the Canyon Runner back out to the Toms Canyon for the third trip in a row in as many days for an overnighter with the Joe Renaud charter from Philadelphia, PA and loaded all the boxes with a limit of Yellowfin on the chunck. Starting the day trolling we proceeded to boat three big Longfin around 50 pounds and 1 90 pound Yellowfin. Setting up on the chunck we figured we were in for a slow night until we started trolling. We were wrong. We never bothered trolling in the morning as we more than limited out with big Yellowfin on the chunck. The first fish arrived at 11:00 p.m. and we quickly boated 7 35-50 pound Yellowfin. The bite slowed until 3:00 a.m. when for the next 2 hours we had 2 and 3 fish on at a time, boating 10 60-90 pound Yellowfin and releasing another 12 up to 100 pounds, for a total of 32. (By the way, we voluntarily released the Yellowfin as we could have kept 27 under NFMS rules). At times there were 100 Yellowfin visual in and above the slick, clearing the water chasing bait. Many of the fish we released were caught site fishing to avoid have the smaller 60 pounders bite and allowing the 90 to 100 pounders to take the bait. The action, as with the prior two days, was in the Toms Canyon.

July 18
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Brad Burgess had the Canyon Runner out to the Toms Canyon for the second day in a row. With the Dan Potenza charter from Middletown, NJ we loaded the boxes with Tuna. The day started in the same place we left them Saturday as the first attack had 5 Yellowfin hooked-up within 30 minutes of trolling, with the charter still half asleep we only boated 3 out of the 5, however, we immediately were loaded up again with 5 more Yellowfin on at once and boated all five. The bite slowed until noon when the fish came up again, however, this time it was 5 Longfin between 30 and 40 pounds and all 5 hit the deck. Just before leaving early we boated one more Longfin and ended the day with 8 Yellowfin all between 30 and 65 pounds and 6 Longfin between 30 and 40 pounds. The bite again was all on Reel Seat Spreader Bars and centered around dozens of Finback Whales feeding on squid in 400 to 600 feet of water. Hopefully these two trips are a good sign of a long and fruitful canyon season as the Canyon Runner will be trolling the edge everyday the weather allows between now and the end of October.

July 17
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Brad Burgess had the Canyon Runner out to the Toms Canyon on Saturday on the first of many canyon trips to come. Fishing with the Rich Brady charter from Manhattan, NY. , the Canyon Runner started their 1999 canyon season with seven rods going off within 20 minutes of trolling the Toms Canyon. With only 4 guys on the charter we had our hands busy and ended up boating 5 Longfin out of the seven hooked-up. We proceeded to go 1 for 2 and 2 for 3 on Yellowfin between 30 and 60 pounds and ended the day catching dolphin on the inshore lobster pots. Most of the tuna hit Reel Seat Spreader Bars and Jets with the Bars, as always the favorites (we don't leave home without them). We fished the entire day in the same spot as whales, porpoises and the bait did not move more than a quarter mile the entire day.

July 15
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Leroy Arms charter from Washington, D.C. out on the Canyon Runner Thursday and found that the warm clear blue offshore water we were catching Bluefin Tuna in was replaced by the Northeaster with cold dirty green water with Bluefish. Trolling from the Glory Hole to the Chicken down to the Triple Wrecks produced a dozen Skipjack some Bluefish and one 17 pound Mahi-Mahi. With the trolling action slow at best, the crew decide to jig one of our favorite offshore wrecks and on the first drop pulled a 16 pound pollock. Unfortunatley that was it for the Pollock bite and we went back on the troll until 4:00 am with no more knock-downs.

July 14
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Moyer Charter from Pennsylvania out on the Canyon Runner Wednesday and expierenced one of the slower days of fishing this year, perhaps due to the Northeaster that blew thru on Tuesday. Trolling umbrella rigs on the Shrewsbury rocks produced only 6 Stripers with 3 keepers and a dozen bluefish to 15 pounds. Hearing that the fluke fishing was non-existent we continued trolling all day but could not put together a bigger catch.

July 11
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Brad Burgess had the Canyon Runner back out to the Resor on Sunday for a day of inshore Tuna trolling with the Ron Massari charter from Chatham, NJ. Trolling Reel Seat Mini Mamba bars put the charter into fish about 10 miles south of the Resor. Two Bluefins around 60 pounds were hook-up early with one hitting the deck and the other breaking off. The crew proceeded to boat several bonita and skipjack but the highlight of the trip include 4 15-20 Bull Dolphin. All of which attacked the Reel Seat Bars but one was baited and switch on light tackle by Burgess.

July 10
Adam LaRosa reports:
The Canyon Runner with Captain Phil Dulanie at the wheel and Brad Burgess in the cockpit got into some excellant inshore Bluefin fishing on Saturday. With NOAA blowing another forecast of 20 to 25 knots winds we fished in calm seas with an occasional swell which provided perfect conditions to troll the Reel Seat Mini Mamba Bars we employ. Dropping the lines in the water just west of the Resor at 9:00 a.m. we immediately had fish up in the spread but dropped the first two before boating a 44 inch 60 pound Bluefin. Trolling the same area and a few miles south we proceeded to boat and release two 35 inch 25 pound Bluefins hoping for another bigger one. We found them as six rods went off which include 3 50 pound Bluefins, one we lost and two we boated with one released, Skipjack and one Dolphin. Most of the Bluefins hit the Reel Seat Bars as well small Melton jets. We were on our way home by 2:00 p.m. with a catch of 3 50-60 pound Bluefin and 2 25 pounders plus Dolphin as well as a dozens Skipjack. A much better catch of tuna then the canyons have been producing and much closer to the beach.

July 9
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Alan Funk charter from Dannex Corp. in Livingston, NJ out on the Canyon Runner on Friday and put together a good catch of Fluke. As Striper trolling did not produce in the morning, we turn over to Fluke and with only two anglers boated 45 Fluke with 15 keepers to 5 pounds. Most of the fish were taken off of the Red Church and around the Shrewsbury Rocks on squid and killie combinations.

July 8
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Dan Quirk charter from the Red Bank Police Dept. out on the Canyon Runner Thursday for a day of inshore Tuna fishing. Setting up to troll just south of the Resor the crew quickly boated and released a 25" Bluefin. The rest of the morning was unproductive but trolling 10 to 15 miles south of the Resor in the afternoon produced a good bite of Bluefin Tuna with some Skipjack as well. Trolling Reel Seat Mini Mamba Bars produced a hook-up of 3 Bluefins with 1 boated around 25 pounds and a hook-up of 4 Bluefin with 1 boated and 1 released, both around 25 pounds. In addition to the 4 Bluefin captured, several Skipjack kept the charter busy through-out the day.

July 7
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Nancy Frey charter out for a belated Father's day surprise fishing trip for her husband, Bill, and put together a good catch of Bluefish. Fishing just east of the Farms, the group chummed up dozens of Bluefish releasing most and keeping a few for the table. The action was not as good as the last few weeks but considering most of the Blues are spawning, it was a decent trip.

June 30
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Jesse Greenberg charter from Marboro, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Wednesday and put together a great catch of Bluefish topped out with 3 Bonita up to 8 pounds. The action was all on bait as we chummed the Mud Bouy. The water was crystal clear and the Bonita bite the wire we had in the water for the Blues. In addition, we boated over 125 Bluefish keeping only a few for the table and releasing the rest. The Blues were between 5 and 12 pounds.

June 29
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Rory Donadio charter from Manhattan out on the Canyon Runner for a day of inshore Tuna trolling. The conditions and fishing was tough as rough seas made us change course as to where we wanted to fish, originally headed for the Chicken Canyon. Fishing down by the Resor we only raised one school to the baits and boated 2 out of 4. The 2 Bluefins did not make the 27" minimum and were returned. The 4 fish all hit Reel Seat Spreader Bars.

June 27
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out to the Mud Bouy on Sunday with Phil & Delecia Wirtenberg from Boca Raton, FL and loaded up on Bluefish. The bite was started as soon as the lines hit the water and within 2 hours of fishing 100+ Bluefish were boated and released. Fishing with 12lb tackle the 6 to 14 pound Blues put up a great battle. We were fishing just east of the Mud Bouy in 125 feet of water. After we had enough Blues we headed to the Rocks and quickly boated one 15 pound Bass after a few passes.

June 26
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out to 17 Fathoms with the Alan Funk charter from Dannex Printing in Livingston, NJ and loaded up with Bluefish. Chumming and chunking produced the bites as 75 Bluefish were boated to be fileted and giving to Alan's empolyee's who work at Dannex. The action was not as spectacular as the last three days but provided steady action for the group. Trolling at the Shrewsbury Rocks to end the day proved uneventful.

June 23
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out on Wednesday with the Frank LaRosa charter for Soloman Smith Barney in Red Bank, NJ and put together an excellant catch of Bluefish and Striped Bass. Trolling the Shrewsbury Rocks in the morning proved uneventful so off to the Farms we went. Anchored up and chumming at the Farms produced constant action with everyone hooked up simutaneously being the norm. Over 150 bluefish were boated by just 4 anglers, with most released to fight another day. Arm-weary by noon, we headed back inshore and boat 3 nice bass of 17, 18 and 21 pounds in one hour of trolling green Reliable Bunker Spoons.

June 22
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out to the Farms with the Dave Tolchin charter from Monmouth Beach and chummed 100+ Bluefish by noon. Hearing of excellant Striper fishing inshore we pulled the anchor and trolled 5 nice Stripers in one hours worth of fishing. The largest Bass was around 20 pounds.

June 19-20
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Brad Burgess had the Billy Wrede charter from Prestige Plumbing in Randolph, NJ out for both days of the Mako Mania tournment. The first day, fishing the Triple wrecks provided the charter with a few bluesharks up to 150 pounds but no Makos. The second day we headed to the Glory Hole and setting up on a drift that lasted 5 miles we started off by releasing 7 Bluesharks. They disappeared and the first of 2 Thresher sharks was hooked. The first fish we fought for an hour, a fight which included mate Adam LaRosa taking a shot in the shoulder by the Thresher's tail on our first attempt to landing it. The next time the fish came close Adam won, we put it in the boat and it measured 13.5 feet and was just over 200 pounds. We then quickly fought and boated a 140 pound Mako which jumped twice. Only a few minutes later came the second Thresher, which we fought for 2 hours on stand up tackle. Once we got an estimate of its size we released it. It was at least 16+ feet long and twice as heavy as the one we had in the boat.

June 17
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out with the Mike Haugh charter from the New York Stock Exchange and put together another excellent catch of Striped Bass. Fishing in rough conditions the charter was kept busy with 14 Striped Bass between 15 and 25 pounds. The fish were all trolled on wire line with green Reliable Bunker Spoons around and just north of the Shrewsbury Rocks. What made the catch even better is the fact that we left the Inlet at 8:00 a.m. and the charter limited by 12:00 letting us get back to the dock before the wind picks up this afternoon. In addition, to the Bass the charter boated several large bluefish which will be filetted brined and frozen for this weekends Mako Mania Tournament.

June 15
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out with the Marty Shannon charter from Long Island and put together a great catch of Bluefish. Starting the day trolling on the Shrewsbury Rocks proved uneventful as no Stripers were boated. The decision was made to run off to the Farms and the decision proved correct as the charter had constant action chumming Bluefish up to 12 pounds on light tackle. The charter limited out in no time.

June 13
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Pete Minotti charter from Hacketstown, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Sunday and found the big Stripers right where he left them the day before. Trolling in rough conditions caused many fish to be droped but Justin Kukera held on to his fish which measured 44" and weigh in at 33 pound back at Clark's Landing. In addition to the huge bass a couple 18 pounders were boated and dozens of 10 to 15 bluefish were attacking the bunker spoons all day. The fish were all trolling around just north and around the Shrewsbury Rocks with most of the action taken place by the green can.

June 12
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie brought the Canyon Runner back to the dock with a catch of Striped Bass that will be hard to beat. Fishing with the Dan Black charter from Philadelphia, PA, around and just north of the Shrewsbury Rocks, the Canyon Runner boated 13 keeper Stripers from 15 to 38 pounds. The larger fish weighed in at 22, 24, 25, 28, and a 38 pounds. Fishing in rough conditions several other large fish were lost. All of the big fish hit green bunker spoons trolled as slow as possible and the 38 pounder was actually hooked by mate Brad Burgess as he was retreiving the lure as we were fighting another Bass.

June 8
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Brad Burgess had the Canyon Runner out for the 6th day in a row and put the Dave Tolchin charter from Monmouth Beach, NJ into another good day of Striped Bass fishing. While the action was not as good as it had been the last five days the charter was keeped busy fighting dozens of Bluefish to 12 pounds and in between the Bluefish attacks boated 15 Bass, keeping 4 up to 36" and 21 pounds. The action was all on umbrella rigs trolled in 20-40 feet of water just north of the Highlands bridge. Captain Dulanie noted that it does seem that the vast schools of Bass we read over the last few trips seem to have moved east. Hopefully a new body of fish will move in for the Summer.

June 7
Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie was out again for Stripers on the Canyon Runner with the Guy Biondi charter from Short Hills, NJ on Monday and found the Bass right where we have been catching them the last four days. Fishing just north of the Highlands Bridge the charter spent the day fighting 38 Bass up to 33". In total we boated 9 keepers up to 15 pounds. In fact, they were all truly legitimate keepers as they were measured by the Coast Guard as we were boarded for a routine inspection on our way home. Like the days before, the fish continue to hit umbrella rigs, both red and blach & green trolled in 20-40 feet of water. In addition to the Bass we also released dozens of Bluefish up to 12 pounds.

The Canyon Runner with Captain Phil Dulanie at the helm got into some the best fishing to date for the Joe Scott charter from South Orange. Quite frankly it does not get any better than it was Sunday. On our way up to the Shrewsbury Rocks we stop under birds working and proceeded to jig 60 to 70 Bluefish in 1 hour. We constantly had four fish on at a time with some fish close to 10 pounds. Joe's daughter Brianna (8) got in on the action and boated 5 herself as mate Adam LaRosa would hook 'em and she would boat 'em. Once the charter needed a break we continued north looking for Striped Bass. We found them. Fishing north of the Rocks off Sandy Hook we got into the best Spring Striper fishing we have experienced in years. Trolling umbrella rigs in 20 to 30 feet of water we had both rods going off every two minutes with numerous double headers and a few triple headers. In total we boated 51 Stirped Bass with 8 keepers up to 31 inches. Brianna herself boated 10 bass and Brianna's Mom Kit boated her first keeper Bass.

Captain Phil Dulanie of the Canyon Runner from Clark's Landing put the Roger Fordon charter from Middletown, NJ into a day of non-stop action. We started the day on the Shrewsbury Rocks and boated the largest Striper of the day on an Umbrella rig. The fish measured 38" and weigh 20 pounds. The action was a slow pick in the morning as we quickly pick up another keeper Bass and a half dozen huge Bluefish. However, just north of the Rocks we noticed birds working and proceeded to jig 50 to 60 bluefish in an 1.5 hours. Once the charter was exhausted we went back to Striper fishing the bite turned on. In the next 3 hours we boated 30 Stripers with 6 keepers brought back to the dock. Most of the Bass were 27" however a few pushed 30". The action was over open bottom north of the Shrewsbury Rocks and the fish bit umbrella rigs with black and green tubes.

Adam LaRosa reports:
The Canyon Runner with Captain Phil Dulanie at the helm put together its best Striper trip to date as the Tom O'Brien charter from Holmdel, NJ limited out with 12 Stripers to 29 pounds. The action was fast and furious early as 6 Bass were in the boat before 9 a.m. Then a steady pick ensued through-out the rest of the day. The Bass were between 31 -38 inches and fat, with weights of 29, 28, 25, 24, & 21 pounds making up the larger fish. The action was all on Umbrella rigs trolled in 20 to 40 feet of water around Sandy Hook. In addition, several bluefish over 10 pounds were boated and released as well as 7 short Bass.

Adam LaRosa reports:
The crew of the Canyon Runner took a day for themselves this Memorial Day holiday before they start running trips everyday and took their wives, daughters and friends out for a day of Striper fishing. Only fishing for half the day we boated 10 Stripers up to 38" with 6 over 31" kept for the dinner table. Captain Phil Dulanie's daughter Melissa (15) boated her first Striper and the largest of the day, a 38" fat 18 pound Bass. Owner and mate Adam LaRosa's wife Shari was also in on the action as she boated a 35" Bass. All of the action was on blue and white and black and white umbrella rigs fished in 30 to 40 feet of water north of the Shrewsbury Rocks.

Adam LaRosa reports:
The Canyon Runner was back out again for Stripers and Captain Phil Dulanie put the Alan Funk charter from Livingston, NJ into Striped Bass action as soon as the lines hit the water. Fishing north of the Shrewsbury Rocks we boated 9 Stripers between 27" and 38", releasing 3 shorts and keeping the rest for the dinner table. The action was all on umbrella rigs and included a couple dozen bluefish. As the tide slacked off and the action died down we spotted birds working offshore and trolling and jigging under them produce constant action for the last hour of the trip as we couple barely get the lines in the water before we were hooked-up.

Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out for the third day in a row since the weather finally broke on Friday and put the George Sarusas party from Millville, NJ into a catch of Striped Bass and Sea Bass. Starting the day off trolling the rigs and spoons we quickly boated 3 bass of 18, 19 and 20 pounds and a handful of bluefish. Once the tide dropped off we moved off shore and finished the day bottom fishing catching Sea Bass.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Ron Romic charter from Cherry Hill, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Saturday and enjoyed excellant Sea Bass action on wrecks in 85 and 75 feet of water. The first wreck in 85' produced a steady pick of 1 to 2 pound Sea Bass. A move inshore prove wise, however, as double headers of 2 to 3 pound Sea Bass were common during the first hour on the piece and steady action continue through-out the rest of the day. In total 175+ Sea Bass and Blackfish were boated with 131 Sea Bass brought back to the dock.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Eric Lau and James Wu charter from Manhattan out on the Canyon Runner Friday and put together a good catch of Sea Bass. Fishing 3 different wrecks in 65 to 75 feet of water the charter boated over 150+ Sea Bass releaseing 30+ shorts and keeping the rest for the dinner table. It was a steady pick all day as the swells from the week of Northeast winds finally laid down.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulane had the Canyon Runner out again for the fourth day in a row and put the Joe McClary charter from Chester, PA into Sea Bass and Blackfish. Unfortunately, the Northeast/East winds which seem to have been blowing for a month built the seas to 8-10 foot swells which are begining to hurt the bottom fishing. Fishing the same wrecks where we boated over 200 the week before we only managed 50+ for the day. However we did get a couple nice size Sea Bass to 3+ pounds and Blackfish to 8 pounds. In addition, for the second day in a row we boated another Striper and lost another one at the boat. We have been fishing these wrecks for 20+ years and this is the first year we ever caught Stripers off them, and the Striper today made it the fourth of the year. In case anyone is wondering, we are only fishing 2 - 3 miles from the beach.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Susan Stein charter from Manhattan, NY out on the Canyon Runner and put together a good catch of Sea Bass, Blackfish and Striped Bass. Fishing in 65 feet of water we had Sea Bass up to 4 pounds and Blackfish to 7 pounds. In addition we boated another Striped Bass off the bottom for the second time in a row off this particular wreck. The Striper was 35 inches and was Susan's first ever.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Dave Tolkin charter from Sea Bright, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Thursday and put together a decent catch of Sea Bass. The conditions were tough as a heave was forcing the use of 12 ounces of lead to hold bottom in 70 feet of water. However, while the catch was not as numerous as last trip where we boated 180 Sea Bass, this trip provide the charter with an exceptional amount of 3+ pound Sea Bass for the dinner table. The Canyon Runner was fishing in 75 feet of water about 20 miles out of Manasquan on a couple of different wrecks. Visit our web-site at www.canyonrunner.com for more information.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Dr. John Bednar charter from Cherry Hill, NJ out on the Canyon Runner on Sunday and put together the best catch of the year to date on Sea Bass and Blackfish. Fishing in 70 feet of water we filled a 172 quart Gott cooler with 180 Sea Bass, Blackfish, and Ling. The largest Sea Bass pushed 4 pounds and the largest Blackfish 7 pounds. In addition we realsed at least another 40+ shorts. Anyone interested in this type of fishing should take advantage of what seems to be a great spring for inshore bottom fishing. Visit our web-site at www.canyonrunner.com for additional information.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner from Clark's Landing in Pt. Pleasant 30+ miles offshore with the Joe Adams and Wayne Ferris charter from Brick, NJ. The fishing offshore has proven a disappointment this year as we boated only a handfull of ling and released a few short cod with 1 keeper. Having enough of the slow fishing we ran inshore 20 miles and in two hours of fishing caugth 100 Sea Bass to 4 pounds. We were fishing inshore in 70' of water and the action was non-stop unitl the wind came up out of the south.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner from Clark's Landing out for a day of wreck fishing with the Frank Atkinson and Ken Fisher charter from Rochester, New York. Fishing in tough conditions we put together an excellant catch of Sea Bass, Blackfish and Ling fishing wrecks in 80 feet of water. We finished up with 70 Sea Bass to 4 pounds and 15 Blackfish to 6 pounds. In addition we released 30+ undersized blackfish and sea bass.

March 12-17
Adam LaRosa reports:
The crew of the Canyon Runner, including mate and owner Adam LaRosa and mate Brad Burgess spent the last 5 days fishing on their second boat in Florida and put together several decent catches. The hightlight of the trip was a 48 pound Dolphin boated by Burgess on the first day. The big Bull was spotted under a school of smaller Mahi-Mahi and was baited with a live goggle-eye on twenty pound test tackle. The battle lasted 20 minutes and the fish was finally brought to gaff. In addition, several dozen smaller dolphin in the 8 to 10 pound range were boated through-out the week and we released 2 sailfish caught while kite-fishing.

February 20-22
Adam LaRosa reports:
The crew of the charter boat Canyon Runner spent last weekend in Florida live baiting Sailfish off Boca Raton and Palm Beach on our second boat which we keep in Florda year round. Saturday produced excellant fishing with live goggle-eyes, as always, producing the best. One of our best trips of the winter season was had despite that we are at the end of the season which produces the best Sailfish bites. Fishing just after a strong cold front, 6 Sailfish between 40 and 70 pounds were released by my wife and the girlfriend of one of our mates. Currently, we are getting the Canyon Runner ready for the 1999 season and will be fishing for Cod/Pollock by the first week in April.

January 19
Adam LaRosa reports:
Mates Adam LaRosa and Brad Burgess of the Canyon Runner from Pt. Pleasant, NJ spent the first couple of weeks of 1999 in Boca Raton, Fl fishing on their smaller boat which is kept in Florida throughout the year. Several days were spent trolling live goggle eyes in 130 to 180 feet of water off Boca Inlet for Sailfish. Several Sailfish were baited including one extremely large Sail for those waters which we estimated at 70 pounds prior to release. In addition to the Sailfish, we also caught several dolphin and oceanic bonita, barracuda and a 150 pound hammerhead which was fought on 20 pound spinning tackle with no wire leader. All the fish except the dolphin were released. The crew of the Canyon Runner will be fishing Sailfish Alley throughout the winter as often as we can get down there in between getting the "Canyon Runner" ready for the 1999 fishing season which for us begins at the end of March.
