2004 Fishing Reports

We will be sailing out of Point Pleasant May thru October and South Jersey Marina in Cape May November and December. Those fall bass trips and great blackfish trips are starting to book up so don`t wait to long.

09/17-18/04
Captain Bob Konz Reports:
Mates Mike Montorio and Archie Perdue were aboard for the Ray Osterhout charter that included John K. Lamb, John Waterman, Vincent J Eats, and Jack Richardson. We were headed for the Carteret Canyon when we got a call from the Fintastic and the Canyon Runner to let us know there was a good troll bite in the Lindenkohl. We switched our heading and got to the Lindey just after the bite. Trolling we found a good reading of bait and set up for the night chunk, knowing we had to get out of there at first light because of the impending weather. The first bite came at 8:30 and then another. by nights end we had boated seven and a half nice yellowfin and 12 Mahi that went to 14 pounds. The half came from a shark attack. We arrived at the inlet just in time to be greeted by the cold front and strong north winds.

09/16-17/04
Captain Bob Konz Reports:
Archie Perdue and Scott Forfor mated the Bill Dowhanik party that included Tom Wicki, Bud Maginnis, John N. Dolan, and David W. Ferurer to the Lindenkohl Canyon. We Trolled 6 nice Mahi and then set up for the chunk. We went 1 for 4 on the night. Not a good trip.

Arriving at the area John told us to look we found a lot of bait readings and settled down for the night. ( right on Johns numbers ) the first three bites were bluesharks dispacthing the last of the three around 2 am. At 2:45 the first tuna bit and then we had a slow pick untill 4 am. from then on we had two and three on until 5 am. We put 13 in the boat and lost around 18 fish. Nice yellowfin 60 to 90 pounds. At daybreak we trolled and lost a bigeye in lobster gear all in all a very nice trip. The charter included Omar Aly, Art Garcia, Bryon Garcia, and Robert Hafetz.

09/11-12/04

We had the Paul Ginondonto group out and we to the west side where there was a good troll bite going. Just before dark we went three for four and one for two on longfins. During the nite we had yellowfins up behind the boat pulled the hook on the first one and fighting the second to the boat. Just before we tried to gaff the fish a large blueshark grabbed it first and then the bite was over. We then trolled two more longfins in the morning before heading to the dock. Tuesday into Wednesday we had the two man charter of Ray Osborne and Steve Chalmas back to the same area, however the fishing had changed. We had two fish on the troll and yellow fin and long fin and than went one for three on the chunk. Once again we lost another big swordfish. What a difference a day makes.

Sunday into Monday we took the Phil Nicholson party out for an overnight trip to the Cartert Canyon. Upon arriving we trolled five yellowfins and then set up for the night. At 2 a.m. our swordfish line went off and we fought the fish for 35 minutes bringing it to the boat three times, but pulled the hook on the 200 lb plus fish just out of reach. Soon after that we had a mad dog bite that lasted 1 and 1/2 hours and boated 16 yellowfins bringing our total to 21. Not bad for our first overnight trip of the season. With the prediction of bad weather our charter that was coming up from Key largo Fla. decided to stay home in the sun. I can`t blame them. Having already entered the Point Pleasant Elks Fluke Tournament, we decided to fish any way. Just after the move to 185 foot waters we had a mako in the slick. The mako took the high bait and Wayne Chrebet fought the fish for fifteen minutes before boating it. By the time we could get the line tight the fish was gone. This one was around 150. Fifteen minutes later trying to get the lines back in the water the lone bait took off. After setting the hook Howard took over and the fight was on. Going around the charter twice we finally boated the big thresher. It weighed in at Hoffmans Marina at 474 pounds. About an hour later we hooked the first blue shark. Tina Cervasio fought the 170 pound blue with the help of Dave Szolt # 79 of the New York Jets. Next up Dave fought a smaller blue for a short battle. Tina used the harness to fight the next one and handled it easily. The last one Dave whooped in short order. The high light of the trip was the apperance of 5 Basking sharks traveling in a line, that came right up to the boat. The crew of the New Jersey Fishing show caught all of this on film, even an under water camera. The fisnished show should be exciting to see WATCH FOR IT.

Archie Perdue on the rod for 1/2 hour finally boated this 328 pound mako. With Steve wiring, John gaffing, and Capt Bob coming off the bridge to shoot it. A great fish but a day to soon, as a 204 was the only qualifing mako to be landed during the tournament.
