Boat Name: ahab
Date Fished: 10-31-99
Location: reach channel, knoll, and oceanic bridge
Fishing Method: eeling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 32"
Bait or Lure: eels, shad jigs
Water Depth: 2-30'
Water Temp.: 59
Information : Fished out of the highlands on sunday. Started at 6:00 and found bass everywhere around the marina and the breaker jetty. Lots of bait, fish moved in and out of the flats fast. Managed 6 schoolie bass and as the boats got on them, they scattered. Went inbetween the o. bridge and n. bridge and eeled one bass 32". Went to the knoll and drifted eels, nothing for 2 hrs. Went to the reach channel, nothing for an hour. Went back to the river under the o. bridge and got another keeper, 31". Still tons of bunkers in the bay and river.

Boat Name: Saint Jude
Date Fished: 10/31/99
Location: Toms canyon
Fishing Method: Chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-80 lbs.
Bait or Lure: butterfish / live squid
Water Depth: 600 ft
Water Temp.: 62
Information : I got to the tip of the Toms canyon at 2:00 pm and took a right turn following the 100 ftm line southward. When I found a small drop in temp, I slowed down to take some readings on the fish finder. When I finally saw some bait on the recorder, I stopped the boat and told the crew to start throwing chunks. then, literally one minute after the first baited hook hit the water, we had our first fish. from 2:30 to 6:30 pm we had mised yellowfins and albacore non-stop. They were right behind the boat and we had fun feeding them our baited hooks. When the fish boxes were full ( 17 fish total), I ordered a stop to the tuna fishing. the crew was dissapointed... but frankly, some of the reports of catches over 20 fish makes me concerned for the integrity of our peers and the dichotemy of anger towards commercial fishermen and self righteous "sport" commercial fishermen. I never sell fish and always make sure all the fish I take get consumed. It's going to be a long winter... cod and blackfish here I come !!!

Boat Name: Porta Party
Date Fished: 31 Oct 99
Location: Raritan Bay
Fishing Method: Trolling, Drifted Eels, Chunked
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 30 - 39 inch
Bait or Lure: Bunker, Eels, Umbrella Rigs, Bombers
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Departed Keyport at 0600 hours. Began our trolling just outside of the sailboat moorings heading for the #10 bouy. Trolled about 10 minutes, had a hard hit/hook-up on the left rod. A short time later we netted a healthy 24" striper. Trolled the remainder of the way to the #10 bouy, caught three more shorts. Anchored left of the #10 bouy and began chunking. First hook-up yielded a very large ray, rebaited and bam, we had a double on. Good fighting by Kevin brought a 35" striper to gaff. Larry, still working hard with his fish brought a 30" fish to the net. Fish finder showed fish all over the place, most likely peanut bunker. Nothing for the next 25 minutes. A hard hit on the right pole and a short time later Kevin gaffed my 39" bass. Things slowed so we decided to cover more water and began drifting eels. Caught a number of shorts and one more 32" fish. Both brothers had to work afternoon shifts at their respective jobs so we headed in with fresh fish for the dinner table. Can't wait to get back to NJ for Thanksgiving. Pheasant hunting at Assunpink and more time on the water. Doesn't get any better than that. Out here.

Angler Name : Bob Sprague - Joe Ponticello

Fishing Method: Drifting
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 38 - 40 " - 20-25 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Eel
Water Depth: 3'-30'
Water Temp.: 60
Information : Out in the fog at 0600 today. Ran out of the fantastic Chestnut Neck Boat Yard! Drifted a few areas of the river and watched one boat get a couple. Then at 0845hrs, my good friend Joe had a hit!! He played it beautifully!! Let the fish run just far enough, set the hook, and played it to the boat. This fish hit just when we went from 25+ feet to 4 feet. by the time Joe landed the fish, I had to start the engine and move for fear of running aground. This fish was fun to watch being caught, it splashed the surface, it came to the top and just let it's head , dorsal fin, and tail come out of the water, looking like a mini-porpose. what was more fun was watching the release! That and the faces of those on nearby boats as my buddy lowered a nice keeper+ at 20+ lbs back into the river. Good luck to all! Bob.

I'll wait for the water temp to drop and hopefully school-up the stripers and blues along the beach. Best part of the day was a whale sighted on the 1.5 hour ride back to Pt. Pleasant.

We headed off by ourselves and the first drop we had a 32 inch fish. Next drop we had a short and then it was non stop action for about two hours. We decided to run out late Suday afternoon since we had to yank the boat due to these marinas which make you get out by the 31st. We headed for the hook and as son as we tuned outside the hook there were birds all over the place. We put out spoons with no results, after switching to rigs we had a 25lb fish on the line. The next fish that hit was a runner. We could not get the rod out of the rod holder with the rod doubled over. As I slowed the boat down he through the tube. We will get him tonght. tight lines

Size: 50-75lbs.
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: ?
Water Temp.: 64
Information : Left the dock at 6p.m. with 11 fares thanks to the Salt Water Anglers of Bergen County bringing 5 of them. Arrived at the west wall of the Hudson at 1:30. Captain took it slow to conserve fuel considering he was barely breaking even on this trip with 11 fares. The conditions were like a lake for the entire trip. Had two quick runoffs within 2 minutes then nothing. After 15 minutes all hell broke loose. I limited out in under two hours along with most of the other guys. The current picked up and the tuna shut downn until daybreak where you could see the tuna boiling at the surface about 70 feet back. Started flatlining and had instant hookups with one being a longfin. Couldn't ask for a better trip with great mates and a captain. The Sea Devil is by far the cleanest boat I've ever been on and highly recommend it. Get out there while you still can. Thanks Bob Pennington for taking us out with only 11 fares. Tight Lines

Information : Three trips to the suds had left me frustrated. I needed to battle some bass -- and soon. The more I went fishless, the more I wanted to hookup. And I was starting to feel too out of touch with the suds to connect with any certainty. Thinking that a good boat trip would soothe those "gotta hookup soon" jitters, I reserved spots for my friend Sergei and I on the Mad Gaffer. As our trip approached I started to get ancy reading the reports of the action in Raritan Bay. I heard and read a lot about surface feeding bass so I brought a couple of 3700s full of poppers and topwater swimmers plugs and one 3700 of plastic and jigheads. By Friday night, sleep was hard to come by -- I kept waking up to see if it was time to go fishing yet! Saturday morning started out smoothly despite the pea soup fog and a late sunrise. After a short run, Captain Burke picked a trolling lane by radar and we started to set out shad body umbrella rigs on wire. The first umbrella was not even set into the rod holder when a linebacker short nailed the rig. But getting off to a quick start did not set the tone for the day. Trolling in that fog was like stumbling around in a dark closet. After 6 hours, we had maybe 12 fish and only 3 keepers. The radio and cellphones did not tell us that others were doing any better. Then the sun started to make its presence known. By 1pm we were getting warm and by 2 pm we could see the fish feeding on the surface. Now things became interesting. Normally, Captain Burke would be looking to leave the fishing grounds around 2-3pm. But the fishing had been hard and was about to get easy. So the Captain decided that we needed to stay out and catch bass. Once we could see the pods of stripers, trolling became ridiculously easy. One rod would go off followed, within a minute or so, by the other. I had been leaving the task of reeling in the umbrellas to the others and cast swimmers and poppers once the boat stopped to fight the trolled fish. Then it happened. Fish exploded all around the boat while we sat idling. The white Gibbs popper was inhaled after a fish took three swipes at it. "I'm in!" Next thing you know, everyone is digging for poppers. I hung a half a dozen in a bucket to make sure everyone had a chance. Screw the trolling, this is fun! Sergei had never seen bass on the surface, and had never seen a popper. He was so excited I thought he would jump into the sea to tackle the fish. Luckily, that was not necessary. But Sergei did need a lesson in popping. After my third fish and shouting directions to him, I had to take a more direct approach. "Throw it right by mine -- Good. Now do like this -- pop, stop, pop, stop." My popper gets swiped at twice, I pop it small, and it disappears into a swirl. Now Sergei, stunned, does just what I showed him. Three pops later he is in into his first topwater bass. That action was hot for almost two hours and it really made the day for us. We caught over fifty bass from 25 inches to the largest fish of the day, a 20 pounder, that I took on a Yo Zuri Hydro-Tiger popper. Finally, as things slowed, we set a course for home. We came upon some pods of breaking fish during the ride in but we did not need to stop. We had our fun for the day.

Fishing Method: Surf
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: n/a
Bait or Lure: bunker
Water Depth: 3' to 8'
Water Temp.: 61
Information : The absence of fish was made up for by the outstanding weather conditions. Four of us fished for 4+ hours through high tide off the beach at Barngat Light Inlet using some lures but mostly bunker. Some other fishermen on the beach and lots of boats at the inlet mouth, but few if any fish seen taken. One summer flounder (18") caught and released by our party.

Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 60's
Information : Left the dock Saturday at noon during a beatiful indian summer. Started fishing at sundown on the west wall. Drifted for a while catching a couple of dolfin and 3-4 yellowfin. Then dicided to anchor. Although thier were plenty of fish under the boat we only picked a few. After about a two hour lul with no action at all, it was like someone turned on a switch. Everyone on board was hooking up and throwing Yellowfin and a few Longfin over the rail. All fish were in the 30 to 50 pound class. We were hooking up at all depths from 60 to 180 feet (if you could get your bait down that far without a bite). By 2:00 AM we limited out with 45 Yellowfin, pulled the anchor and headed home. It was like shooting fish in a barrell. If you can still ge out, GO! Happy Halloween

Marking fish all day long we picked at Bluefish, catching a couple dozen and some short Bass all morning. Information : I thought it would be a good night to flyfish. I saw bait all day and there were gannets spread out throughout the beachfront. The surf had picked up on the incoming tide and when I reached my spot I thought that the waves were getting to big on the incoming tide. I fished my usually spots and decided to give one jetty with bigger surf a try. Guess what... That is where I caught a very large bass that I had on for me to get a very good look at him from the jetty. The problem was I had 4-5ft. set waves crashing in on the jetty and every concievable place where I thought I could possibly land this fish. Needless to say my new flyreel's drag went and I was palm dragging this bass. All in all it was a great fight till a double up wave body slammed my bass into the sand and it was goodbye. I think it was for the better because it was kinda of hairy to get it in. I will take that back Arrrgh!!!!!!!!@#$@$@@$#%$%$^&$%&%&*^^&*

There are so many fish they were attacking the bait on the way down. went through a lot of bait. These fish should be there for another week or two. I'll be there again this weekend and maybe Friday. Information : I went out fishing after a hearty dinner and it was a beautiful full moon. The wind was light out of the SW and the conditions looked unreal for striper fishing. The moon was high and the jetties were lit up so well that I really didn't need a flashlight. I was looking at the moon so intently that I was totally spooked by a stray cat that I nearly stepped on. No, it was not black but black and white. Anyway, with all this beauty and serenity I fished for 2 hours at various locations and Wha la! What a beautiful evening on the rocks...... I called it a day when I was nearly taken out by a wave. Go Yankees.

Trolling in the vacinty of the Shrewsbury Rocks with Umbrella rigs we boated 20+ Bass and 25+ Bluefish. While only 6 Bass made the 28" limit the action was enough to excite the anglers into making another trip from Baltimore in November to get in on some Thanksgiving Week Striper fishing. The one thing which should be noted is that we were marking fish thick all day but they only bit for a short time. In fact we foul hooked a few Bass in the back, which only proves that they must be stacked-up waiting for the water temp. to drop just a little bit more before they turn-on.

Bottom fishing was very productive since 3 people caught over 100 Sea Bass in about an hour. 1 keeper at 15" and some bergalls. They worked excellent as bait. Lost a real nice 100+ pound yellowfin 20 ft. from the boat when it sounded at too steep of an angle under the props. Other than that it was a great trip with calm seas, flat as a lake. Next went down to shrewsbury rocks and ran into a bluefish frenzy. Pulled in the trolling gear and had some fun casting to the blues. They were blasting metal. 6 to 8 lb. size. Trolling back towards home (northbound) produced one more bass well after sunset. Pulled the gear and ran home in the dark. Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 29"
Bait or Lure: black bomber
Water Depth: 3-5
Water Temp.: upper 60s
Information : I fished the morning now it is the night light wind out of the northeast made for some waves that were breaking right into the rocks. I had 3-4 foot waves crashing into rocks right into face. The fish were litrally next to rocks as soon as the wave would break the fish would exit out the back of the wave I was amazed that they could live right there were this 4ft wave was standing up and crashing, spraying water in my face and drenching me for every wave. I managed to get three fish to hit my plug literally on the rocks before the water receded. Then I got frustrated and changed plugs and whipped it out towards a boil and wham! My next trick was to get the fish on the rock pile which was helped by a cleanup set which pushed the fish right on top of the jetty. My first keeper for the year and it was free of parasites and sealice. I was glad to finally catch one that I could put to use. My next trick was to ride my bike down the boardwalk with my pole and fish carried with my bike lock. All in all it looks like it is starting to take down here. Persistence paid off.

Fishing Method: Drifting worms
Specie: Striped Bass

Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Started at the Highlands Bridge at 5AM, that did not produce, I was quite surprised at this due to the fact that it has produced very well during the weekdays over the past couple weeks. Then fished the Rumson Bridge next to a guided boat from Hazlet/The Tackle Box, that didn't produce for me or the pro guided trip. However the presence of this boat confirmed my suspicions that the bait is in the river. However I was curious to venture out to the rip and found zip, no birds, no bait, at least some blue fish would have made it entertaining. For those of you who thought of taking off work on Tues. and didn't you did not miss anything. I did see one short Striper caught whle trolling, the only one I saw caught all day by any boat. Things don't seem right for this time of the year and I'm tired of fishing at night.

Bait or Lure: sassy shad's
Water Depth: not sure

Information : Fishing near the are of the highlands brige has been nothing less than stellar lately. But there is one big problem and that is the bosts drifting methods. They are drifiting under the many segments of the bridge, which is ok, but the turning on their engines and ripping straight through the area they drifted over, and consequently right over the fish. Whoever is driving the boats should learn to use the channel, by the draw bridge. Its just common courtesy. Besides my bickering, I think its important o tell, that sassy shad and fin-s arificial baits have been doing the trick.Just get them to the bottom, and reel them straight up, with an occasional jig.

Fishing Method: Butter Chunks
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 55 to 90 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Butter fish
Water Depth: 490 Feet
Water Temp.: 65.9
Information : Captain Joe took the Fletcher Construction party out to the Hudson Canyon. And what a trip it was, calm water both ways. Captain Joe put us on the tuna right away, started chunking and had our first tuna in the boat before the anchor was set. We had a consistant bite for about 3 hours, boating 10 fish out of 18 hook ups. The author of this report was responsible for loosing 5 fish. The tide went slack and we lost the bite, until about 4:35 AM. Then the tuna came back with vengence and an attitude. Although the fish were the same size, they must have taken a nap and vitamins, because they were killing us. We lost 5 or 6 before we got one in the boat, they biting through the leader and spitting hooks. In the end we boated our limit, but not befor getting beaten up badly by the TUNA. The final score was 15 for us and 28 for the TUNA, but we think 2 or 3 of our losses were sharks, as they invadid our slick late. Overall, if you are looking for a great tuna trip you should contact Captain Joe on the Family Tides, out of the Belmar marina. He and the Mate Rich are truly some of the finest Fishermen I have ever had the good fourtune to fish with.

Information : A very nice day weather wise but fishing was a pick all day. First stop at monster ledge produced nothing but a shark bite off and some non biting fish breaking near the boat. A move near the lilian produced our first flurry of action with some bonito, false albies and bluefin and a small mako that was tagged. We had several shark bite offs with tuna rigs down deep so while the action is slow put out a shark rig in the 80' range. A late flurry of fish started but we ran out of bait and only broke off a few. Had some brownish algie type stuff at both spots that looked like it was straight out of Raritan bay if you know what I mean. We headed in with a flat ride home.

Information : Capt. Paul Regula had the Bounty Hunter out of Clarks Landing Marina to the Hudson Canyon for an overnight chunking trip with the Emilio Pinho charter. The only way to describe the fishing on this night would be "SPECTACULAR". Arriving on the East Wall at 6:30PM and drifting in 500 ft. of 67 degree water we had our first Yellowfin in the boat within 5 minutes. From that point on it was non stop action for 2hrs. 33 tuna up to 80lbs were hooked-up and 24 yellowfin plus 1 longfin were put on ice in the fish boxes. It was the fastest time ever for us to put together a limit catch. After enjoying another great night of fishing aboard the Bounty Hunter, we left for home at 9PM with a very satisfied and happy charter.

Information : Was out over the weekend with a private charter on the Deep Adventures out of Point Pleasant. The weather was great and we had a wonderful ride to the Wilmington Canyon. After arriving it wasn't long and "fish on" was being shouted from nearly everywhere. I personally boated 3 within the hour and then proceeded to help the others catch their limits. While most of our party was chunking with butterfish, I was having tremendous success with a large viking jig at about 100' depth. When you dropped to 100' and jigged about 5 times without a strike you weren't at the right depth and adjustment of ten feet or so almost always generated a strike. We were in the Yellowfin heavy for the whole night. Lot's of fish lost for all sorts of reasons but also lots of sore arms and backs in the AM. Thanks to Capt Dave and the crew on the Deep Adventures can't wait to do it again.

Location: Oil Wreck/Monster Ledge
Fishing Method: Trolling and Chunking
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 6-9 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 150'
Water Temp.: 67 degrees F
Information : We trolled from Manasquan Inlet to the Oil Wreck and caught two bonito (2 & 7 lbs.) on a green/yellow jet. After trolling the area and noting some marks we set up for the chunk. After an hour with no hits on the chunk we trolled over to the Monster Ledge with no hits on the troll. Anchored in 150' we put out a bunker chum bucket and started chunking butterfish. The action was slow but steady with bluefish hookups between 15 and 60 feet. We tried the bottom but caught only large dogfish. Using 50 and 80 lb. leader with no wire on 20-30 lb. class rods we must have lost at least a dozen bluefish due to biteoffs. Stepping up to 50 lb. class rods and going to wire didn't do one of the 50 lb. outfits any good. At about 7 PM (after everyone else left the area) something hit it so hard and fast the butt (wooden) broke at the rod holder and the whole rig disappeared. The episode seemed to take only a second. I'm trying to figure out what to say to the neighbor who loaned me that custom 50 lb. outfit. We left at 8 PM after running out of bait.

Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 2 keepers, 4 shorts
Bait or Lure: sandworms
Water Depth: 10-40'
Water Temp.: 59
Information : Fished on Friday night on Teacher's Pet. We had 2 keepers and about 4 shorts and 1 dogfish. I had 1 keeper Bass that was 33" but only weighed 7.8 pounds. Sandworms were working best although we had a good run off on an eel. We had to move around to find the Bass but once we did we caught them. Caught the keepers both at once and then picked up shorts. One reason the fishing was slower was some idiots ran right through the rip. Its amazing how many people didn't have good lights or lights at all. Tried today at Highlands Bridge nothing but Sea Bass and sea robins. Tried worming in Sandy Hook nothing but a skate and sea robin. Trolling produced nothing although we were marking tons of fish and bait. Mostly bait but some fish.

Location: Point Pleasant, NJ
Fishing Method: Jigging and bait fishing
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 3 lbs and much bigger
Bait or Lure: AVA 17 and 27, peanut bunker
Water Depth: unknown
Water Temp.: unknown
Information : My trip started on the phone...after several calls to other boats, I chose the Queen Mary. The Captain was very nice over the phone, informative, and genuinely welcomed my 10 year old Niece. The boat had a light crowd of 20 or less, (most were repeat customers), which contributed to the helpful, friendly atmosphere. The fishing was steady all day. At one point 1/2 the people were fishing the structure we anchored over, for Sea Bass. The other 1/2 kept fishing for Blues. Squid was given to the Sea Bass fishermen, and plenty of chum was dispersed. I saw alot of Jumbo Sea Bass come over the rail, and a 14 year old girl caught one of the biggest blues I'd ever seen. My young Niece needed help with catching blues, and seemed to prefer fishing for Sea Bass-because she didn't need help to do that. She took pride in baiting her own hooks, measuring and taking her own fish off the hooks...BY HERSELF. The Captain, and his mate-Brad, had great attitudes, making every effort to keep everyone happy and catching fish. Brad was always there when you needed a gaff, and he was very good at it. He was also good at pulling stuck bottom rigs free. Everyone left the boat happy, with plenty of fish. I highly recommend the Queen Mary, her Captain and mates. They are very accomodating to women, children-(including my toddler), and to those who are physically challenged. They have great attitudes which make a good day of fishing, even better! After docking, we went a short distance to Point Pleasant beach. The gulls were working, and I had to go back to my truck to get the fishing poles out...and catch more bluefish. I drove home with sore arms, and a thankful heart, for another GREAT ocean adventure.

Size: 8.88lbs
Bait or Lure: bunker spoon
Water Depth: 19ft
Water Temp.: 62.4F
Information : Fished with Jimmy Whittiker on his boat, Jim/Jan, started at daybreak and went straight to the rocks. Trolled up total of 6 blues 5 to 7 pounds, no strippers . Dragged everything from umbrella rigs to spoons to plugs, but no tackers. There were Albies all along the shore, but they were interested in peanut bunker only. The wind started up so we started trolling south , in 14 feet of water off a jetty in Long Branch the big Weakfish hit a green and yellow spoon. I thought it was another blue untill I got it to the boat and called for the net.I weighed in at 8.88 pounds on Jimmy's digital scale. Blue fish are plentiful just outside Manasquan Inlet and in the River and Canal, But No Strippers today.

Weary from the non-stop action the charter elected to head home early and we were back in the dock less than 12 hours from when we left.

The bite came at 9:10pm and we would have maxed out by 11:00pm if it weren't for the 3 fish we lost in the beginning of the night. Caught the remaining 3 fish at the 3:30am - 4:30am bite. Weather started to get nasty. Got back to the dock at 11:20pm. 16 Yellowfins in all. Flags were flying, scrub brushes were scrubbing, backs were aching. A great night at the Hudson Canyon!

I only made 5 fluke trips; spend most of my time chasing tuna; but that is another story. We only caught keeper fluke the last three trips. We caught at least fifty fluke yesterday, many at 15' and had to throw them back. Fluke are difficult to handle and I believe many die. I know we put several nearly dead fish back. It is about time for a limit of say 6 fish any size. No more throw backs. Why don't you pissant regulators wake up.

Saw very few fish caught. Decided to troll around the tip of the Hook on the way home, and hooked the Striper on an umbrella rig with black & wine colored tubes with a wine trailer. Tight lines.

We never anchor and out of all the boats in Wilminton Canyon Saturday night the only boats that anchored were the big party boats from North Jersey. We don't know of any charter boat or private boat that anchors in the canyons south of Atlantic City. Don't think it is a bad idea when the current is ripping although. Well we got on the fish within a couple of minutes and had fish on four hours non stop. We only fished one line at time because the fish were all around boat all from the beginning. We boated our limit of 24 and out of 28 hook-ups and were on our way home at 3:00am. It could not have been any better tuna fishing

Though we never got into a non-stop bite, there were enough Tuna under the boat chasing bait at the 80ft. to 100ft. depths to give us plenty of action. Our dead sticks baited with freshly caught squid continued to go off every time the fish came under the boat, giving us 1 & 2 fish hook-ups. The working lines baited with chunks picked away at the fish which were swimming higher. By 11:30pm we had put together another limit catch of 15 Yellowfin and 1 Longfin in the box.At minight we left, hoping to beat the oncoming Southwest wind. we didnt, and had a wet ride home. However, Another great night of Tuna fishing on the Bounty Hunter,Fish boxes full and an arm weary tired charter. Information : Capt. Paul Regula had his Bounty Hunter out of Clarks Landing Marina, Pt. Pleasant, NJ out to the Hudson Canyon for an overnight chunking trip with the Joe Morrison charter. As usual the weather service blew the forecast. The early morning wind which caused a rough ride home for most of the boats returning was nothing more than a gentle breeze by late afternoon and when we arrived at the Canyon at 6:30PM the seas were 1 to 3 ft. and the wind was calm. The only other boat in the Hudson along with us was the XTC out of Belmar. We anchored in 425 ft. of 68 degree water and started what would be a very orderly pick on the Tuna. We put an average of 3 to 4 Yellowfin in the box every hour over a 5 hour period. By midnight we had our limit catch of 21 fish on ice and had lost another 8. At 1AM we were on our way home.Another great night of Tuna fishing aboard the Bounty Hunter! Oh, by the way the XTC limited out also and left an hour before we did.

Water Depth: 500ft
Water Temp.: 69.8 deg
Information : Finally made it to the Canyon!!!!! It was another great trip!!!! We left the inlet at 12:00 noon and arrived at the Canyon at 4:30 PM. It was a nice smooth ride w/ almost no sea. How that changed overnight!! We trolled across the deep to the east wall (away from everyone). Nothing on the troll. We dropped the hook (1200' of line) and started to get set up. I dropped two lines and started to chunk. Within 5 minutes we had 2 YFT in the slick. I proceeded to catch one and Scott hooked up but lost the fish. We proceeded to catch 10 YFT all in the 50 to 70 lb class until the bit shut down at around midnight. We lost a 100 lb fish at boat side. Broken leader. I know you always loose the big fish. I have it on video. We had the fish to the boat two times and the final time we were wiring the fish for the gaft when the leader broke. All night from midnight to 4:00 AM it was dead. At 4:15 AM we caught another 60 lb YFT on a squid down about 100 ft. Then we finished the night at 6:00 AM with two more. Ended up w/ our limit in the box and we lost 7 other fish (some by choice in the morning and some not by our choice). The ride home was no picnic. It took us 6.5 hours to get inside. As everyone knows who was there it was a nice big wind w/ large seas. The 27' Tiara took it well. This looks like it may have been my one and only Canyon trip this year. Too much work and no play. Anyway you know how that goes. Tight lines and I hope to catch some strippers soon. The group was great. Lou (the boat owner), Scott, Nick and myself. These guys can fish!!!!

Information : Left Cape May inlet at 3:30 PM for an overnight canyon trip despite the 15 knot blow from the south east. NWS said 2-3 ft with 10-15 kt winds. They were wrong. We arrived at the tip of the wilmington by 8:00pm to be greeted by a fraction of the boats on site last weekend. We got set up and began the chunk but the bite was not on. Radio reports were not good. Wind started picking up and soon was howling through the rigging. Not a good sign. Seas began picking as the wind gusted to 20+kts. With the seas kicking up fast and no bite we decided to begin what was going to be a long ride home. Left at 11:30 pm after eating dinner and arrived at Cape May inlet at 4:30AM!!! Seas were 4-5 foot with 6 footers mixed in. IT WAS SNOTTY!! Launched the boat (a 15,000lb 32 footer) completely out of the water at one point when we hit a "Rogue" wave. Took several other waves over the bow and to make matters worse the starboard Racor was partially clogged (dirty diesel) and caused the motor to lose RPMs intermittently. Oh and of course the radar was almost completely useless running in the dark because the boat was pitching and rolling so much!! Needless to say that was the last trip of the season. Good luck to those who brave October's winds to reap the rewards. Many thanks to Luhrs and Caterpillar for getting us back to port safely -- especially after reading the reports of several boats sinking up in Cape Cod.

Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: up to 70
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 400-600
Water Temp.: 67
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Max Berry had the Frank Atkinson charter from ASA Apple, Inc. Edison, NJ out to the Hudson Canyon on the Canyon Runner and had the trip of a lifetime. Getting to the edge by 4:30 p.m. we put the boat on the drift where we had 48 Yellowfin the day before. Within 5 minutes we had fish on and boated a couple but three boats trolling circles around us immediately stopped in our slick and dropped anchor the second they saw us hooked-up. Knowing this would immediately shut down the fishing we continued to drift away from them but in so doing threw 2 flats of butterfish over within 20 minutes and kept the fish with us. The two man charter plus the captain and mate each had 3 fish by 7:00 p.m., however, both anglers continuously fought fish until 11:30 p.m. and proceeded to catch and released 46 additional Yellowfin. The total catch for the trip was an amazing 58 Yellowfin for the two man charter. The key, as usual, is getting off by yourself and finding your own fish, everyone should practice this technique, its deadly. By the way, the three boats that anchored in our slick ended the night with 9 fish between the three of them.

As soon as all the other boats left the area we had bluefin in our slick. It was non stop action for a couple of hours. We landed and released a good amount of fish. Around 5:30 we started to headed back to old Barney but decided to go in through Manasquan Inlet. We really put that 25 Grady to the Test that day with that nice sw wind. Tight Lines to all.

Fishing Method: Metal (Fast Retrieve)
Specie: Little Tunny
Size: 8lbs
Bait or Lure: Crippled Herring
Water Depth: 50 ft
Water Temp.: 68
Information : Started fishing at 7:30AM right off one of the jetties in Avon. Massive schools of Peanut Bunker were getting hit by Weakies and Blues. Threw the cast net twice and had enough bait for the week. We livelined the bunker and caught plenty of small Blues up to 3lbs and small Weakfish (only caught one keeper). We fished there for a few hours and then decided to move. My buddy Bill spotted some boils a few hundred yards behind the boat. He threw a Crippled Herring out which got slammed by a nice False Albacore. I then spotted the largest school of Albies I've ever seen further offshore. We made a quick run to the pile and started casting. We had non-stop action for two hours on light tackle. The highlight of the day was seeing a 6-7ft shark fin 6ft in front of the boat. I guess he knew there were plenty of Falsies around. Great day of fishing. Looking forward to this coming weekend.

Information : Returning to the Brielle Yacht Club from the trip on Friday, we oiled the boat and turned around for another run to the Hudson Canyon. Joe Paddock organized this trip for Robert & Frank Berckman, Martin Lund & Erik Link and we were glad to have the chance to fish with them. Leaving late afternoon had us arriving at the Hudson @ 10pm, which made for a bit of a sticky anchor set in an unexpected heave. (Boy, was the National Weather Service ever "off" on Friday night!). It was a real "picky" night, and we had much difficulty keeping the fish at the boat. While only putting a few Yellowfins in the box, the charters were out-geared on several occasions by much larger fish! We also landed and released a small Swordfish. Once again, special thanks to Captain Jeff Dangelmajer for working the trip with me.

Information : Took my son-in-law and his Dad out and Kicked ass. Bill hit 5 keeper fluke in a row in 25 ft of water on the south edge of the rifle range , no wind but a north curent. We tried deeper water and found only large skates. We went north of Shark River to the dredgers and got in close where the sand was being dumped. Bill and Bob threw finess fish into the bait fish and nailed weakies and small blues. We played around for 30 minets and then tried fluking again. We went south half a mile and the wind picked up to give us the best half mile drift of the season. We took 12 keeper fluke to 24 inches, 4 more weakies and a large blowfish and 2 small albies. We finished with over 10 pounds of fluke fillets alone . I had the pleasure of letting several boats in on the action when asked over the radio. After listening to others boast about 6 and 8 fluke in the box ,it was my turn to report 18 fluke, 8 weakies and 6 blues IN THE BOX

Bait or Lure: Butterfish & Squid
Water Depth: 400 ft.
Water Temp.: 68
Information : Capt. Paul Regula had his Bounty Hunter out of Clarks Landing Marina, Pt. Pleasant out for an overnight chunking trip with the Mike Rao charter. Anchoring in 375 ft. of water on the West Wall, it was only a short time before 3 boats dropped their anchors within l/4 mile of our boat. Knowing that this would virtually take us out of the game, we waited until dark and pulled our anchor. Moving a couple of miles we found an open area where we read fish and bait. Within a 1/2 hour we had our first 70 lb. Yellowfin in the boat. With the nearest boat a mile away we owned the fish and the bite. Over the next 2 1/2 hours we boated another limit catch of 24 Yellowfin in the 50 to 75 lb. range. It was another furious non-stop bite. By 11PM we were on our way home with the fish boxes loaded. Another great night of Tuna fishing aboard the Bounty Hunter! Proving again "you don't fish in a crowd." Go and find your own fish.

Water Depth: 450
Water Temp.: 67
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie had the Jim Bouton charter from Rochester, NY out on the Canyon Runner and put together a good catch despite several strikes against us. First, due to the fact that we had to wait for one of the charters we left 2 hours late and missed the early bite, not getting to the Canyon until 10 p.m. Second the crowd of boats made finding a open area tough. Once we anchored we picked a couple fish throughout the night and really had them going in the morning when a dragger ran right up our slick almost running us down. Nearly missing the boat, they got our anchor line and cut us off taking 1500' of anchor line 50' of chain and a $300 anchor, but most importantly, chased the Yellowfin out of our slick and leaving us with a shaken up crew who thought the dragger was going to sink us. We did end up with 7 yellowfin and a few nice Dolphin.

Information : Drove our 25 Grady from Manasquan Inlet to Wilmington Canyon. (I know we're crazy) The new optimax engines I put on get serious mileage. Within 2 miles of the canyon the water went from 68 to 78 and totally blue water. I thought we were in Florida. We caught 2 dolphin and a white marlin before turning around and making the 120 mile treak back home. We picked the wrong method of fishing as the boats chunking during the day were cleaning up on the yellowfin. The first 60 miles home we were cruising at 36 mph until we hit the south wind and then we were in 5-6 footers pushing us home. Took 4.5 hours to get home. Last time we make that run.

Information : Took the Friday night trip out of Belmar. The bidding action for the customers between the Jamaica and the Golden Eagle was comical. The Golden Eagle hawkers said the action was "red hot" for bluefish, of course we learned later from the crew this was not the case. We went out about an hour and a half from shore, the boat had about 40 fisherman, we anchored, and probably caught about 1 fish per angler. The crew was helpful, and the boat didn't return until 3:00 AM, I certainly can't fault them for trying. A good clear evening but not many bites.

Fishing Method: Trolling/chunking
Specie: Skipjack Tuna
Size:
Bait or Lure: Zuker Feathers
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Pete Micioni, Will McNeely & Pat Arata from Morgan Stanley Dean Witter had clients Mike & Seth from Bank of New York out for an inshore trip. Leaving the dock before daybreak, we marked fish well short of our "Mud Hole" destination and trolled up some skipjacks and falsies to start the day. Realizing that we were probably into smaller species, I re-geared down to 30 lb poles with Penn 45 GLS's, tying small Zuker feathers onto the 30 lb mono, and kept them close to the boat, running Penn International 50's on the long, short and center riggers in search of larger prey. We had no encounters with Bluefins but the charters had a ball with the smaller tuna species mentioned above, which only hit the smaller Zuker feathers trolled tight. We hit the Oil Wreck with bait & jigs to no avail. I then headed further inshore and decided to throw the hook near the Shrewsbury Rocks. Chunking brought a couple of runoffs but no stripers. We did, however, drop some 12lb poles down near the rocks with butterfish chunks on the blackfish hooks, and were rewarded with some very nice sized seabass. Putting the 30 lb poles back into trolling duty with Striper gear produced more Skipjack action on the ride down the beach towards the inlet. All in all a nice mixed bag with a great group of men!
