Size: to 40 inches
Bait or Lure: anything you threw
Water Depth: surf

Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 21 in. to 25 in.
Bait or Lure: swimming plugs & pencil popper
Water Depth: 0 to 6 ft.
Water Temp.: ?

Boat Name: Fun King
Date Fished: 10-30
Location: Sandy Hook
Fishing Method: Plugs
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 24+
Bait or Lure: Plugs, bunkers
Water Depth: 3-20'
Water Temp.: 55
Information : Tough Halloween with all that wind. Ducked inside the Hook to get out of the gale and noticed all the beach boys were hooked up. Threw diamond jigs and pencil poppers w/neg res. Beach boys said "Slow!" Tried swimmers and poppers and watched the fish chasing and taking. Incredible schools of bunker, psychedelic in the clear water. Easy enough to snag a bunker on a single hook and wait for the bass or blue to jump on. What a day! We paid for it, though, on the long wet ride home into the teeth of the wind, in our 18' CC. Can't wait to get back.

Boat Name: surf
Date Fished: 10-30-98
Location: sandy hook
Fishing Method: livelined bunkers
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 26"-34"
Bait or Lure: peanut bunker,plugs
Water Depth: 10 ft
Water Temp.: 60
Information : Got a late start this morning (900) and fished the hook till one o'clock. Non-stop striper fishing along the tip all after noon. Huge pods of bunker were right on the beach and there were lteraly hundreds of stripers blitzing. In the center of the pods mostly schoolie bass were feeding. Around the back and edges of the pods there were all larger fish about 35 inches. Best day of surf fishing i ever had!!!!! Myself and one other guy had a field day with these fish catching one on every cast (when the bait was in front of us) and during the periods when the bait was out further or down the beach we caught them on plugs or swimmers. Even left the fish biting (because i had to go to work). I landed at least 25 shorts and 6 keepers. One of the fish had a littoral society tag in it. All went on during incoming tide. Hope this lasts through the month.

Boat Name: Mo' Money
Date Fished: 10/30/98
Location: Sandy Hook & Shrewsbury Rocks
Fishing Method: Trolling & Plugs
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 26' to 29"
Bait or Lure: tubes, umbrella Rigs, bait &plugs
Water Depth: 3' to 40'
Water Temp.: ?
Information : Started trolling at about 7:00 AM by the Sandy Hook bug light. Rounded the Hook and got a 29" bass on a red tube. Went to the Shrewsbury Rocks and all we caught were rocks. As we were returning by the beach at the Hook, there were a lot of action with the surf-fishermen. Trolled closer to the beach and caught another bass. Surf-fishermen were reeling in lots of fish. Went closer to the beach, and tried sandworms and small frozen bunker, with no hits. The wind was stiff from the NW. We got close to the beach, in about 3' of water. We starting using plugs cast parallel to the beach, at a three foot depth. Started getting fish left and right. The visibility was incredible. The bottom could be seen clearly at seven feet, as we were being blown away from the beach. The fish could be seen chasing the plugs as they were pulled through the water. The fish were hitting yellow plugs. One could see them chasing the plugs in groups of 3 and 4. Caught and released a bunch of Stripers and bluefish, and lost three plugs. Had to get under the Oceanport Bridge without an opening, so I had to leave by 2:30 PM. As we got to the Rip, we ran into some serious waves fueled by the wind and tide. I thought that a boat ahead of me, at the Rip, was about to pitch-pole. As we headed home, we tried to follow the Sea Fox, but I couldn't maintain her speed. Rounded the Hook, with by deck awash and took quite a beating, in my 20 footer. One of the most thrilling trips I ever had. Came back with three Stripers and two bluefish, in the box, and release the rest. Hope you're feeling better, and tight lines.

Size: 25 to 50 pounds

Water Depth: 180'
Water Temp.: 60
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Mike Zajak had another good day of fishing in the Mudhole for Bluefins. Fishing with the Rob Bruno charter from Brooklyn, NY on Wednesday, the Canyon Runner caught and released 5 Bluefins and lost 2 others. The tuna weighed between 25 and 50 pounds and put up a great fight on the light tackle we were using. It is amazing that people will refuse to get in on this great fishing only 22 miles from the inlet only because you have to release what you catch. Our worst trip so far has been 4 Bluefins and our best has been 15, most of the fish are better than 30 pounds, the typical size of the longfins we have caught all year in the Canyon and yet there are only 2 or 3 boats out there with us on any given day.

We came home with 8 nice fat flukes.

With birds flocking everywhere and fish thrashing the surface the ocean was boiling as far as the eye can see. The four of us took 15 fish, but released about 60. Caught countless blues on poppers and metal, plus a barely legal 28" striped bass that blasted a redhead popper.. The blues blitzed again Saturday morning from Mantoloking up to Manasquan inlet, fish were everywhere... again countless #'s of fish caught.. Biggest blue for both days went a shade over 8, and the surface poppers severely outfished metal.. Did see some tunny caught, as well as a weakfish or two.. Bait store said the marine forecast had been wrong all week, and the west wind was not bad. Tried the bay, but by 10 AM whitecaps all around. Went up to the inlet, and saw 2-3 chop outside, not bad. Drifted with some other boats just north of the inlet, from 25' to 40', west wind 15 knots, and picked up a few fluke, skates, and sea robins each drift. We ended up with 15 keepers by 3:00 PM. Nice sunny day, a little windy, but a pleasent surprise to be in the ocean.

Bait or Lure: Butterfish baited hooks

Information : Chunked for yellowfin beginning 11PM Sat. night through 8AM Sunday, 20 guys plus crew fishing. Did not boat a single fish. Had only 2 runoffs which were probably sharks. Very disappointing. NOAA forecast of 4-7 ft. seas was actually 8-12 ft. Even in a 100 ft. boat we got the snot kicked out of us. Should have skipped this trip.

Information : Moderate Northwest winds. Fished for small Blues in on the beach. The fish were there, however, fished spooked by boat traffic. Caught a few right away, then the fish would sound. After 40 minutes of this hit and miss fishing, the Captain (to his credit) moved further off the beach to 17 Fathoms. Jigs worked best. The blues were bigger. The fishing was steady, but not wild. Finally, a move was made to the Mud Bouy. Once the chum set up, the little Tunny fishing was outstanding. Proper baiting technique was a must for being in on the non-stop action. Although the mates were a little slow in responding to cries for the gaff, the Queen Mary is a fine boat because the skipper works hard to make sure the boat is where the fish are. Further, this boat had a variety of baits available. I recommend this boat to all working men (and women).

Information : SAW THE BIRDS WORKING AND THE WATER WAS BOILING A QUATER OF MILE OFF THE BEACH. STOPPED TO WATCH FOR A WHILE AND NOTICED THE FISH COMING CLOSER. GOT READY TO CAST SOME METAL AT WHAT I THOUGHT WOULD BE BLUES. WHEN THE FISH WERE IN REACH MY FIRST HOOK UP WAS TO MY SURPRISE A WEAKFISH. AS I STOOD IN THE WARM WATER WITH MY SHORTS ON A FEW FISH LATER, SOMETHING I PROBABLY WILL NEVER SEE AGAIN HAPPENED. THE WEAKFISH WERE RUNNING INTO MY LEGS AND THE OTHER PEOPLE WHO NOW HAD GATHERED WERE ACTUALLY TRYING TO GRAB THEM BY HANDS. I STOOD AND WATCHED IN AMAZEMENT AS THE WEAKFISH CHASED THE SPEARING AND LEFT THEM PILED ON THE BEACH. AFTER IT WAS ALL OVER I HAD CAUGHT 10 2-4 POUNDS. SOME LADY VIDEO TAPE EVERYTHING. I WISH I HAD GOTTEN HER NAME SO I COULD GOT A COPY. THE NEXT DAY TALKING TO A FRIEND I LEARNED THE WEAKFISH HAD COMEIN THE FIRST TIME FURTHER SOUTH AND ONE ANGLER CASTING FOR THEM HAD CAUGHT A 35LBS. STRIPER.
