Location: ocean
Fishing Method:
Specie: Striped Bass
Size:
Bait or Lure: calms
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Started out the morning in the chocolate mess we call the ocean! Water was very dirty from the past few days of weather. Had plenty of bird life, loads of bait, even saw fish rolling on top for a bit....didn't catch any. Went to clamming, the first drop, not a bite. Made a move to the North and pick some nicer fish. Made another drop after that died and caught a few more. Ended up with 8 nice keepers and some shorts. Surprised we caught anything with the looks of the ocean. Andrew Seney, Union Beach landed a beauty at 35 inches, 18 pounds to win the pool. Things should start to happen any day, now that the bait is in the ocean. Capt.Ron

Headed back up to the knoll and Romar...NG the rest of the day.Tom Druckenmiller, Northampton, PA had the big one at 30 inches, 12 pounds. Information : Wind, wind and more wind. What can I say, I can't even give you any hope with todays report! Had a ton of birds working in the AM, picked some blues and 2 bass. Incoming tide made it impossible to fish anywhere near the Hook, the knoll or in-between the channels. Tried down the beach, never had a hit. Boats from down South were coming here looking for fish!! Wind was steady 30 with gusts to 35. Supposed to be lousy again tomorrow and Saturday is already calling for 25 out of the SE!!! Not panicking yet ..November was very good last season....capt.ron

Information : Nothing like a challange...wind 30 knots NW....tide,incoming..need I say more! Had one keeper till around 1pm. Started to pick a few fish on a couple different drops. Not good by an means, but we did manage some keepers along with a 16 pound pool fish....More bait starting to move down the beach, I'm sure by the weekend the jig fish will be ready, especially with the colder weather coming......I have had a couple of customers reply to my rant about the Power Pro..Yes, I was pissed. But I'm even more so now that a couple of guys think it's better to fish on another boat than understand what I go through....Let me just say, for as hard as I bust my @%*ss for my customers and the 110% I put into this everyday I sail, if that's what you feel you have to do, then so be it...I can gaurantee not many others are gonna take care of you the way we do...Yes, there are a few guys who still use that stuff occasionally, but they are customers who have been with me for years and I know, they know what they are doing, still, they have gone back to mono for the Striper fishing. Yesterday, I had a customer with a very nice fish on, the fish headed for the back of the boat...naturally someone had braided line and guess what happened when the fish crossed it..GONE. The guy was not happy..so there you have it, I bent and got burned!!! Capt.Ron

Date Fished: 10/22/2006
Location: Asbury to Highlands Bridge
Fishing Method: Jig, live line
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: 3-4 lbs
Bait or Lure: penut bunker
Water Depth: 20-35 FT
Water Temp.: 61
Information : Headed North out of Manisquan Inlet as the crowd headed South Saw blues pushing Peanut Bunker into the wash from the North of Asbury to the Red Church.
Jigged blues of all sizes but no stripers. Livelined peanuts under the schools, more bluefish. Moved to the rocks and used peanuts to catch some really nice sea bass at the North drop off and gully sections. Ran out of peanuts so headed for the Northern fleet. Amazing reading on the graph but fish had lockjaw. Watched the Freddie C position over heavy concentrations with no results. No fish boated anyaware around us. Went back south and jigged more blues until the South wind blew hard, then headed in.
Bad boat fire in the river, big catamaran blew at the fuel dock, crew burned, boat sunk on flats. Use those exhaust fans everybody. Fumes sink in the colder weather. Lets all be safe out there.

We arrived at approx. 9 am and had our first fish on when the second line went in the water. Capt. Rob stayed on the fish and we had our limit before noon and were back at the dock by 3:30. Our mate Steve did a great job of rigging the baits and gaffing every fish that we got to the boat!

Information : Ran across the bay from Keyport Harbor to Staten Island and had a fish on within minutes. I got it all the way to the boat and the line snapped, lost my new rig and a killer fish. Started all over again and within 15 minutes we were into the Stripers hot! The birds started to arrive and the other boats in the area following them were jigging. We were into the fish every 5 minutes. Brought in a total of 12 Stipers very close to legal (27) and not one Blue. My two keepers were caught at the same time on my rig, it felt like I caught a boot! The wind started to kickup around 10:30 and the Stipers turned off, the birds and the other boats disappeared as quick as they came but we had our share of fun. My best day of the season. You gest it..a lousy day. Had two patches of fish come up at the change of tide, figured the bite was on..caught a few shorts on two drifts, then the life dissapeared. Went clamming, that was a joke..fished 3 area's not a bite. At 1:45 some life showed between the channels...had fish boiling around the boat, we could count the Stripes on the Bass...caught 2 fish!!! Tossed everything we had at them, jigs, clams, poppers, plugs, everything but the kitchen sink with no luck. To top off the day, just before we got to the slip, the wind blew with gusts to 45 knots!! Only disappointment was Hotdog was 0 for 0 on Mahi Mahi...
Trip out was on a lake we made 32 knots. Trip back had 4 to 6 foot seas with large swells made only 22 knots for part of the trip... in the bottom of one wave could not see the horizon.... A good last overnight trip.

capts mike marvinney and dave bender took peter lindia of bridgewater,nj and friends back out on an overnighter to the hudson canyon monday oct 16th. we chunked seven yellowfins to 70 lbs but never had the fish under the boat for very long. we worked very hard and moved several times just to put that catch together. our plan was to drift the squid boat fleet in the am but the predicted southeast winds for "late" came quite early, the ride home was unpleasant and the inlet was trecherous to say the least. once again there were scattered reports of good catches, the fish seem to be scattered in smaller schools, we are hoping that schools open for business next time we go.

Boated a couple keepers and tossed back a dozen all most's. Hard Wind against the tide didn't help us at all, no where to go for perfect conditions. Still early, the best of the fishing didn't happen last season till around the 23 of October and on...Still plenty of bait in the bay along with the bluefish. Will be back for Friday to give it hell!! The afternoons are finished....customers gave up before the fish, so we'll try it again in the spring....On another note I have to start to inforce keeping this Power Pro, Fire wire and what ever else you guys use, off the boat...It took Eddie and myself 2 hours to cut that crap outta my bearings today! Im sure it's also gonna cost me $1800 to replace them tomorrow....I am not a happy Captain!! I bend over backwards for my customers, the least you can do is please try to respect that....please. Also, please get out the heavier rods....there will be days when we have to jig fish with at least 6 oz. jigs. There's nothing worse than watching someone with a noodle-rod bent in half (just from the jig)trying to set the hook on a Striper in a 3 knot tide! You're Killing me! Information : Fished with friends, Scott Serafin, Gary Muldovany, Jack Dos Santos, John Lehman, Mike McCarthy, on Nick Neuberg's BENCHMARK. Gave considerable thought to heading South, but Cap't Nick opted to fish a warm area just North of the Hudson. Began trolling at 4pm and caught 2 Longfin + Yellowfin. After setting up for the night, we were inundated by larger than usual Mahi and caught many. From 9pm to 5am we caught 10 more Longfin + 2 more Yellowfin, and heading back to the beach at 6:30......

Fishing Method: Worms/Eels
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: up to 37"
Bait or Lure: Worms
Water Depth: 50'
Water Temp.: ???
Information : Today I made the morning trip on the Sea Hunter with capt Rob and Duffy. Within the first two minutes of bottom time 3 of the 8 fares were into fish. Everyone on board was worming except me, I was fishing eels looking for that bigger fish.(not the brightest idea today). For most of the tide worms was what they wanted. I personally had 7 fish up to 15 lbs (36"). High hook I think had 12. Everyone that wanted their limit had it. I just kept my biggest and let everything else swim away. Pool fish was in the 20 lb range. Awsome fishing for the first half of October in Jersey.

Set up in 520 ft and the first Yellowfin came 45 minutes later. The boat totaled about 40 Tuna for the 19 fares of which 2 were longfin and all the rest were yellowfin from 30-65lbs. The 2 Longfin were at least 60 lbs. each. I hooked three and landed two yellowfin. Joe Poye borrowed my swordfish rig/rod a couple of hours before dawn and he wound up nailing a sword of about 70 Lbs. Joe got his limit on yellows. Live squid, sardines and jigs accounted for the fish. I tried for Tilefish early in the morning but no dice. Good crew and a good trip. Get 'em while you can.

The Mirage with Capt. Bruce Miller at the helm had another successful Canyon open boat trip. The trip included Mark Meyers, Toms River,NJ, Anthony Costello, Bordentown ,NJ & Joe Cantone, Brooklyn,NY. Trolling around East Toms a 5 mile long weed line was spotted and the lines were set out around 2 PM. Within one-half hour 3 Mahi were landed. The crew decieded to pull in the trolling gear and began baiting the Mahi, which produced another 10 from 3 to 10 lbs. Around 6 PM the Mirage went on the chunk, setting up in blue, 71 degree water. It wasn't till about 8 PM that the first Yellowfin was hooked and boated & this continued up until midnight. The bite slowed and only another 3 YF were boated between midnight & sunrise. Headed back to the barn at 7 AM with our fish flags flying, as usual. Total catch was near a dozen with only one YF lost and 10 Mahi. Working with me were Captain's Tom Walsh & Rich Oris.
The Mirage is scheduling just two more open boat trips,Oct.18-19, Oct.25-26 & weather good & enough customers we will go on Nov.1-2 for the day chunk If interested call Capt. Bruce @ 908-278-2415 (cell) or 732-341-5782 (home).

Stopped a couple of times, but marks were few and far between - got nothing... Cruised up in 45' of water and back at the shore line - nothing. This was what we sort of expected after the washing machine weekend that we just had - will take a few more days for the water to clean up....
Went out to the Barnegat Light Reef for an hour or more and just relaxed in the sun while slow drifting for Sea Bass... Got a couple of taps but no fish... Only saw a couple small fish brought up while we were out there... Absoulutely beautiful day on the water, however, it felt a little like the return of summer... Started drifting for fluke, and was immediatley apparent that it was going to be a sea bass day... Constant non-stop action all morning on every drift.. caught about 40 sea bass and 2 porgies... only kept 4 big sea-bass... There were a lot of blues out on the reef as well - they would periodically bust the surface - but looked like 2-3 pounders...
Came inshore to the Coast Guard Station at noon and trolled a little... I never saw so much activity under water before - the sonar was solid for most of the water column with some big fish being marked - of course I only 'saw' them didn't 'catch' any... Looked like weakfish, because we did land one spike - didn't have any time left or would have played in there some more.. Back to the dock at 2PM... Felt like a summer day, except for lack of company out there... counted about 14 boats on the reef, and another 10 by the CGS... It was worth the vacation day - beautiful day on the water... Danny

Had to power drift the edge again (all day!!) to put a catch together. Much nicer fish with several 2 to 4 pounders. Everyone on the boat had thier limit again and then some. Never had any wind like they talked about the past few days, it was perfect. Don't know how much longer it will last, the fish are moving further down the channel each day. I'm definatly worried about the N to NE the next two days. Like I said in past reports, that was the end last year...will just have to wait and see.....I will be away Monday the 9th till Saturday the 14th. Boat Name: TENACIOUS
Date Fished: Oct 2-3
Location: Toms
Fishing Method: Chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 60-75+
Bait or Lure: Sardines/Squid
Water Depth: 670 ft
Water Temp.: 71.2
Information : Capts Bernie Roth and Tiny Miles hosted the John Vidalis charter from Jackson NJ for an overnighter in the Toms Canyon. Water was cold where we caught on our last trip and we setup farther south. Caught and released a small sword and had first tuna bite at 11pm. Had difficulty catching squid and relied on sardines at 120 ft to get bites. Charter had constant action till first light with large yellowfins most of which were 75+ lbs and more belligerent than normal. Out of 20 hookups the charter managed to boat 11 and for ist timers they did very well on these brutes. We chunked till 8am but there was no daylight bite.

Fishing Method: Drift
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 0
Bait or Lure: Peanuts and Clams
Water Depth: 46

Information : Looked at the upcoming weather and decided to head outfor an evening trip. The water was flat as a lake so I headed out to the tip of the Hook at the Rip it was 2 foot rollers. Dropped my lines and drifted offshore about a mile with a Sand Shark and darkness I bolted for the inshore Marker 42 which has always been good to me. Not a hit. The other boats that I saw where doing nothing. The water was so quite that I could hear people having a party on their boat but could not see the boat. Later they cam towards me and I could see that they were having problems navigating they way home. Hope they made it. Six guys in a 15 foot Boston Whaler?

Information : Morning bite again today, not hot and heavy action, but a nice pick on each drift. A few guys did manage thier limits. Not many bigger fish the past 2 days, and not many fish being caught in the back!! Heard there might be a NE for a couple of days this week...if you remember last year, Oct. 11th was the end of the weakfishing. Had a 4 day NE'ster that chased the bait and the fish out of the bay...we never caught another Weakfish after that. Hope it doesn't happen, but if it does, we go to plan B...If you gotta ask what that is...you don't fish with us. I had two customers correct me on a spelling error they have seen in my past reports..thought it was pretty funny...Seems I have been using THOU for the word THOUGH!!! They thought it was from the bible!!! Sorry, Capt.Ron
