FISHING REPORTS FOR OCTOBER 2003

NAUTICALNET MARINE CHARTERS

Angler Name : Gary Fekete
E-Mail : mbroth1@comcast.net

From that point to midnight the charter (including one lady) battled 100 to 160 lb fish constantly. The fishing was obscene!!! We never witnessed Bluefins biting that voraciously and that late at night. The six person charter limited out in 2 hours with 125 to 160 lb fish. We had two boats in succession tie up to our transom before midnight and they limited out. The mate, Kevin Miles, caught and released two Bluefins on a spinning rod with 30 lb test line. In total the charter released 25+ Bluefins.

We did not have that much time to fish during the daylight Friday but made every minute count as in a 4 hour bite the charter put together the best trip of the year. On the drift on the east wall of the Hudson Canyon the big bluefins were boiling behind the boat all afternoon. Within 10 minutes we had the first fish on and kept 3 bluefins hooked up at all times. The charter boated their limit of 4 and fought another 8. In total they caught 9 bluefins from 130 pounds to close to 190 pounds and lost 3 others. All the action was on sardines and squid on 80-pound leader and 50 pound stand-up tackle.

Bait or Lure: Jigs, Jigs, Jigs
Water Depth: 50-60
Water Temp.: 54-56
Information : Fished with Gary and Frank and did our usual run and gun style of chasing birds, bait and breaking fish. Armed with a good supply of Ava 47's and 67's we started off immediately with a striped bass and 5 hours later ended the day with another striper. The majority of the fish were blues, from 2-13lbs, and PLENTY of them as the 3 of us caught well over 100. It was a good old fashioned blitz. And to top it off in between all the blues and bass Gary pulls up a 9 lb. weakfish that was released to breed again. We called in our old time fishing friend, Dan Purdy on the Carly Rose, to enjoy the fishing as well. It was just a matter of getting the jigs to the bottom without getting bite off. As Frank will tell you, bring plenty of jigs!Waited all year for a day like this, calm seas, warm sun and plenty of fish and it WAS AMAZING.

All the boats out there seemed to get there shot at the bluefins but no yellowfins or albacore were mixed in. The day started out good and got better as the day went on. I put 23 keepers in the box with a throw back ratio of about 2 to one. Most anglers seemed to have between 5 keeper to a limit. I caught one keeper porgie and one short blackfish. I threw the porgie back ( what can you do with one 11" porgie when you have lots of sea bass in the box. Good boat good crew. The only thing that took a little getting use to was the 50 cents a fish charge for filleting. The atlantic highland boats do it for tips. I guess it comes out the same anyway. I'll be back!

Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: up to 4 lbs
Bait or Lure: crab
Water Depth: 85-120 ft
Water Temp.: 58
Information : Went out wrecking after our Friday canyon trip was thwarted by a camoflaged 100 ft rope floating next to a floating ball. The crew was glad that no seroius dammage was sustained by the running gear and that the guys at Hoffmans Marina were kind enough to give us a quick haul out to free the prop shafts. Anyway, back to the bottom fishing, we found the best sea bass action to be in the deeper water, and we, too, had to pick our decent catch out of a swarm of shorts. The biggest sea bass were 4 lbs. and we got three of them. There was also a huge trigger fish (5 lbs.) The clouds of porgies on and around these wrecks are encouraging.

Fishing Method: chunk / troll
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: n/a
Bait or Lure: Sardines, butterfish, live mac's
Water Depth: 400+
Water Temp.: 63 degrees
Information : We took advantage of the window on Friday night/ Saturday. We broke Point Pleasent inlet at 8:30pm and arrived at the east wall at 3:30am. There was a fleet of 50- 70 boats working the east wall between the edge and the flats. From the reports we received, Friday afternoon fishing was hot, but had shutdown about 10:00pm. We setup quickly and chunked for 6 hours with out a bite. The only action we had were several schools of tinker mackeral that moved through our slick. These were caught, livelined, and yielded false albacore. At 9:30am picked up and trolled the edges of the east and west wall and followed the draggers, then proceeded to the Texas tower. At 1:30pm, with seas building, we headed for the barn. We're done with canyon fishing for this season, excluding this last trip, it was an excellent year.

Bait or Lure: butterfish
Water Depth: 400-500 ft
Water Temp.: 62*
Information : Fished Fri+Sat with Nick Neuberg and Mate Greg Bushman. Started out to be a typical overnite canyon trip at the dock, but for one exception, the abundance of 80TW's on board. Knowing there were Bluefin there, and larger fish, our yellowfin strategy quickly changed. Arriving at the east wall at 5pm, we setteled in and in 20 minutes we had our 1st runoff on Scott's 50TW + a working line. This fish took-off like a freight train, nearly dumping the entire yardage, but finally stopping just short of the end. Figuring this was a bigger than average fish, we came off to fight it. Still havig 50% of the line in the water, we were now in an up+down battle, carefully monitoring our drag setting. Scott stayed on for the 1st 45min, with a follow-up rotation of 4 other anglers, which would last for a total of 3 1/2 hrs, and happily seeing this 7ft long swimming Volkswagon circle under the transom. With persistence we continued the max drag pressure as the giant came broadside and expertly darted by Mate Greg. Adding another large gaff and smartly showing it the back door. Minutes passed and a measurement was taken - 81 1/2 inches, a Jersey Giant. After a brief gathering of thoughts, Capt. Nick re-positioned the boat for the remainder of the evening, and staying on drift, we faught and released other smaller fish, + 2 blue sharks. Our a.m. bite was very quiet, + at 8:30 headed back to Manasquan (NOT THE BARN), and for RAFT, ending another canyon year.... Happy trails; RAFT

Water Depth: 400-450
Water Temp.: 68
Information : October 18-19 Captain Phil Dulanie, Adam LaRosa and Phil Lidlow took the Joe and Rob Connelly charter from Freeport, LI out on the Canyon Runner Saturday to Sunday and perhaps put together the best trip of the year – tough to really compare as after 620 tuna we had some other decent trips. However, this trip has to rank right near the top. Starting on the East Wall of the Hudson near the tip at 4pm we had a double of yellowfin on almost before the anchor line came tight. By 7pm we had 8 40-60 pound yellowfin in the boat and by 11pm we had our limit of 15. Then, as if the fish knew we were done with yellowfin, the Bluefins show up greeting us with a double of 200 pound fish. We fought both for over an hour when the first broke off near the boat 20 minutes later the second was put in the boat. Thereafter we did not go more than 15 minutes without a big bluefin on and put 3 more in the boat by 3am. These fish were a little smaller and weigh from 125 to 145 pounds. We also fought and released several 200-300 pound blue sharks and jumped off a mako before heading home early at 5am.

There weren't many porgies around, but the whole boat was into sea bass on most every stop. Water Depth: 600 Feet
Water Temp.: 68
Information : October 16 Captain Phil Dulanie, Capt. Joe LaRosa and Capt. Joe for the Lite ‘n Up had the Tom Bontowkowski and Ed Hamilton charter out on the Canyon Runner last Thursday for a day chunk trip as the weather did not provide a larger window. Arriving at the Hudson Canyon’s East Elbow at 5am we put only one yellowfin in the boat before dawn. Then we waited for a day bite that appeared as if it would not materialize. However, at 11am the first Bluefins came into the slick and from then until 3:30pm we were hooked up the entire time. Unfortunately we could not get them to eat anything heavier than 80 pound flouro on 80 pound main line and thus could not put out the heavier tackle spooled with 100-150 pound main line. In those 4 hours we battled 14 Bluefins and put 4 from 140 to 200 pounds in the boat. We lost one around 250 at gaff and broke off the rest. Squid were the bait of choice.

Water Depth: 600

Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Justin Nighan were able to get offshore in between storms yesterday and put the Brian Garivello charter from Middletown, NY into yellowfin in the Hudson Canyon. Arriving in rough seas on the east wall we threw the hook and waited, and waited but only put 1 yellowfin in the boat by 1am. With the wind laying down and the seas with it, we pulled the hook as we were called in by the Fat Cat out of the Atlantic Highlands and now own them dinner. As soon as they pulled their anchor we drifted right past them and pulled hundreds of tuna into our slick. We read ‘em from 50 to 150 feet down and had them visual behind the boat. From 2am to 4:30am the charter fought 30 yellowfin putting a total of 20 in the boat. At no point during that time did we not have a fish on and most of the time we were fighting 3 at once. Obviously the fish bit whatever we threw at them but squid seemed to work best. We were back at the dock by 9am.

Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 50-60
Bait or Lure: Squid
Water Depth: 700
Water Temp.: 70
Information : It was just like the saying goes, “you can’t win ‘em all” and last night the tuna got the best of the Canyon Runner. I guess once out of 50 trips ain’t bad. We had a few difficulties leaving at dead low tide and had to wait an hour so we missed out on any troll bite but that should not have been a problem as we were chunking by 6:30pm. Unfortunately despite several moves and all our efforts we only had one bite all night long. The Bob Megesly charter saw Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Justin Nighan and Billy Rowan pull out all the tricks but nothing transpired at night beyond the one yellowfin. We had a little time to get up on the troll in the morning and added another yellowfin and a longfin but had to head home with only 3 tuna in the boat. This was by far our worst trip since July 9th. We were fishing the east wall of the Hudson Canyon.

By morning the total was 13 yellowfins and 10 dolphin. We would normaly head home at day break, but with the forcast for the weekend being bad and dot having to come right back out we decided to drift for the bigger fish to the north of us. Capt Brian Orio gave me a call and we set up by him. Ten minutes later we had the first big fish on. after a twenty five minute fight we landed him and 125 tuna. We then lost a real big fish and were on our third bite. This fish we fought for one hour and 67 inch medium tuna. Back at the dock it weighed 175 pounds. Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 60-90
Bait or Lure: Sardines
Water Depth: 600 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 73
Information : The crowds at the "Lindy" forced us local boys to start looking for a new "honey hole". That piece of the edge can't take that kind of pressure for very long before the catch rate takes a dump. Working south to find some crowd releif we headed for 500 line of Wilmington. Whales and shearwaters were everywhere and it wasn't long before we had 10 fish on at once. All jumbo longfins, landed six of ten. The bite was mad dog in and around the fin backs. The best part was we were all alone with all these fish. The most productive area was in 600 fathoms. Just before setting up on the drift we trolled a nice mako, who had a swimming plug used for bass hanging out his trap. The drift was perfect, right up the gut of canyon with a slight bend up the bank. The yellow fins were with us all night long and they were followed by a longfin blitz at dawn. Boxes stuffed, tight lines!

Location: Lindenkohl
Fishing Method: overnighter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 50-70
Bait or Lure: butters
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 72
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Justin Nighan and Bert Rothenberg had the Todd Polumbo charter from Southport, CT out on the Canyon Runner for a Monday/Tuesday overnighter and decided to make a trip down to the Lindenkolh Canyon. Trolling in the afternoon produced a couple bites on ballyhoo and we had 2 longfin and several mahi in the boat when we set up on the chunk. Anchoring in 550 feet of water we picked tuna all night and ended the trip with 14. However, that was not the story. With a slow pick going on the tuna we were able to get a swordfish rod out and this rod was going off all night. We ended up breaking off one big sword when the 150 pound leader busted and dropped another after a short battle. In addition, however, we boated 4 other swordfish between 44 and 46 inches releasing everyone.

The night chunk was very consistent and averaged one fish per hour starting as soon as we anchored. The charter boated 2 more longfins and 9 yellowfins between bouts with three swordfish. The first two swordfish came to the surface quickly and pulled the hook as they approached the boat. The third sword surfaced quickly also but then dove for the depths as 5 anglers took turns developing back spasms. 35 minutes later this sword was gaffed and weighed in at 150 lbs. The charter passed on a morning troll and we left for home with 7 longfins 9 yellowfins a swordfish and several mahi on ice.

Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: 3 lb fish
Bait or Lure: squid - bucktail
Water Depth: 50 - 70 ft
Water Temp.: 67 - 70 *
Information : Spent a very nice fall day coastal fishing. It does appear, in spite of the decent water temps., that bottom species are on the move, and were not there as was 2 weeks ago. I did catch some decent sea bass, but no fluke. Both Monday and Tuesday were super days, weather wise, and NOAA's forecast was perfect, which brings me to another subject of reporting. As I report and have read over the years on this site, I continually read inaccuracies about the NOAA marine reports, on a weekly basis, by inaccurate and unknowledgeable fishermen and some charter Captains, ie; NOAA BLEW IT AGAIN !!!!!!!!! It's very frustrating for me to understand that grown adults CAN'T properly absorb the detailed information it gives us on an hourly basis, 7 days a week. Years back, weather reporting was a bit different. Today, it has become very precise, and as boaters and fishermen, we must always draw a line where LAND meets WATER. NOAA gives us a genreal idea, but we as Humans and computers, are not flawless. The complainers, should be well satisfied with spending the day out, or maybe they would rather do a stretch of 4 months in a cancer hospital fighting for their LIFE !!!!!!!!!! WISE-UP guys!!!!! Happy trails, RAFT

Information : We did not catch any Fluke. We did catch a lot of sea robins, a few small weakfish, and a small snapper. We had to stay in close due to the rough seas. I don't know how the NMFS can say the recreational fisherman are over their limit on many species of fish including Fluke when We have not caught our limit all season. Just when we seem to find am area that is producing the commerical guys come in and clean it out. Now they are thinking about opening a commerical season for striped bass after they have come back. If they do open it to commerical fishing it will only take a year or two and we will be restricted more than we are now due to the lack of fish. What is it going to take to get our goverment thinking right? Well anyway we did catch a few fish and had some fun. I think I sww the Bounty Hunter heading out with some brave souls , I am glad I was not on that boat!

Location: North of Shrewsbury rocks
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 32'
Bait or Lure: Shad Rigs
Water Depth: 22'
Water Temp.: 63
Information : NOAA blew another forecast. Sunday the forecast around the Manasquan area was 3 to 5 foot sea, on 10/05/2003. It turned out to be more like 1 foot at 9am. We gassed up, pulled out of the Manasquan, and headed for the "Nude Beach" just south of the Sandy Hook Point. The trip was about 20 miles but it was well worth it. Just passed the Shrewsbury rocks, we started trolling 2 shad rigs. We trolled north at 3.6 MPH in about 22 feet of water. I figure we were about 4 miles north of the Shrewsbury rocks when both 4.0's started clicking out line. We trolled the area for 2 hours and landed 3 Striped bass to 32" and 10 blues. The blues were in the 8 to 10 pound range. The bass were hitting the dark shads with the pearl bellies and the blues were hitting everything. When I said that we landed 10 blues I meant we kept 10 and tossed back another 10. The day before we went out, we heard that the Bass were hitting Pearl colored shad. When we got back on Sunday, someone told us that the bass were hitting Yellow shads. Who knows? Cary a variety of colors and if one doesn't work, try another. For my money, the black shads with the pearl bellies work just fine. Super day on the water.

Information : Slipped off to the Lindenkohl for a fun trip with the crew! Crew consisted of Captain/ Owner Burt Greene, Captain Mark Ptashinski Joe Ptashinski, Captain Jim Linell, Mike Bontempo, Bob Azurak, Captain Rich Oris Hooked a couple Mahi on troll in afternoon. Hooked up a Blue marlin in the 300-400 range on a 50 standup, had us almost spooled, fought 3/4 of line back on but he spit the hook. Trolled one 60-70 yellow fin before tying up Anchored at tip of Lindenkohl, bite was steady 60-70 Lb. Yellow fins, caught 10 more, lost about same number. Troll in AM didn't produce. During the nite a very large school (pod?) of porpoise were all around the boat chasing small Mahi Mahi and other bait fish. They were so close to the boat some times they actually splashed us. There were literally hundreds of them. Water temps at tip around 71, a little further south and on one side of a weed line temp was 73+. Trip finished up with 11 Yellow fins, three Mahi Mahi, three Skipjacks, a great look at a Blue Marlin, and a great crew trip. Weather report from Len Belcaro's Offshore Satellite Service was right on the mark again, as was the satellite temperature charts. Nice weather --nice fish once again!

Information : WE WERE OUT FOR SOME TUNA AFTER HEARIN ALL THE REPORTS AND WE COULDN'T HAVE BEEN HAPPIER WITH THE FISHING. WE HAD 1 60 LB TUNA ON THE TROLL RITE AWAY THEN SET UP ON THE CHUNK. CHUNKIN WAS SLOW ALL NITE, ALL WE SAW WAS A 12 FT BLUE SHARK THAT KEPT GOIN FOR OUR CHUM BAG. IN THE AM WE HEADED BACK OUT ON THE TROLL. NO LUCK THIS TIME SO WE STARTED HEADING IN AND STOPPED AT A PLANK OF WOOD WE SAW. WE HAD 3 MAHI ON THE BOAT RITE AWAY AND HOOKED UP WITH A 100 LB YELLOWFIN ON A LIGHTACTION SPINNER. IT BROKE THE LINE AFTER COMING TO THE SURFACE 3 TIMES AND DIVING BACK DOWN. AFTER FIGHTIN THAT FOR ABOUT AN HOUR WE KEPT ABOUT 10 MORE MAHI, A FEW TRIGGERFISH, A 30 LB YELLOWFIN, AND 1 SMALL AMBERJACK. GREAT TRIP, ONLY DOWNSIDE WAS WE HAD TO LIMP BACK INTO PORT WITH ONLY 1 ENGINE WITH THE COAST GUARD BECAUSE THE OTHER 1 BLEW THE FUSE. THANKS AGAIN TOM.
