We worked the "hell" out of the Rocks, and Pit off Monmouth Beach and Sea Bright and finally found the Bass between the channels. We limited out and released a few and added a dozen bluefish on "pumpkin colored tubes" tubes trolled on wire 200 feet of wire line (just kidding black and green worked best). Happy Halloween!!!!!

Angler Name : Chris Hempstead

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: Oct 28
Location: Hudson
Fishing Method: Overnignter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 50-100
Bait or Lure: Butters
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 67
Information : Captains Phil Dulanie and Randy Matlack and mate Greg Riback had Chris Hempstead charter from Fairhaven, NJ and his father out on the Canyon Runner for a Monday-Tuesday overnighter. However, since we experienced non-stop action as soon as the baits hit the water we turned this trip into a day trip. Arriving at the east wall of the Hudson Canyon at Noon Monday we read fish even before we set up on the chunk and put 8 longfin and yellowfin in the boat in the first 2 hours. With the two man charter ready to head home early the Canyon Runner crew begged for a few more hours on the edge since due to the weather this looks like it might be the last trip of the year before we start Striper fishing full time. The Canyon Runner crew then joined in on the fun as everyone had a shot at the fish with Chris Hempstead accounting for many himself but the crew and his dad addded to the catch. By 5pm we were boxed up with 25 tuna on ice (15 yellowfin and 10 longfin) and back at the dock just in time for the Giants game on Monday Night Football (and a quick peak at that new fishing show on ESPN2 at 9pm - "Fish On!!" Man those girls are NICE - fisherman that is!). To top it all off, these fish were much bigger than our previous few catches as the yellowfin were all 60-80 pounds and the longifn were 50-60 pounds. After a tough tough year with weather we were still able to put 85 days in on the edge (5 one day trolls and 40 2-day overnighters) and over 500 tuna in the boat, and can happly say, "Bring on the Stripers, the Tuna can wait until June. We're Done!!!"

Boat Name: Atlantis Princess
Date Fished: Oct.27-28
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Chunking
Specie: Big-Eye Tuna
Size: 120lbs.
Bait or Lure: butterfish
Water Depth: 500+
Water Temp.: 63
Information : Fished the Atlanis Princess out of Atlanic Highlands on a Sunday to Monday overnighter. The Teal's new catamaran wasn't ready so Jeff the captain leased the Atlantis Princess from Staten Island. We didn't have a bite until 5 a.m. then picked at longfin and yellowfin. I hook about a 60lb. longfin at 8 a.m. then with 15 minutes left I hooked into a larger fish. Forty minutes later and 1 1/2 times around the boat the mates brought the fish aboard. A 120lb bigeye. Total for the boat was a little more than a dozen fish. Apparently our boat had the best success after talking to a friend of mine who's a mate on a charter boat. He was out there too and said all the captains on the radio were complaing of a slow pick. Thanks goes out to the mate from the prowler who cleared out the other lines so I could fight this fish with no tangles. Good boat, captain and mates. See you guys soon.

Angler Name : Ron Antonelli - RAFT -
E-Mail : karonaraft@cs.com

Water Depth: 28-31'

Information : Left Manasquan at 9am and headed north, nice day. Not much happening until the rocks, where 10 boats were drifting, marked a small amount of fish, no bird action and continued north to the hook. A bunch of boats trolling and drifting there but not many pulling fish. Trolled there for 2 hrs. and caught 2 bluefish. Decided to head south and work the beach. Came up on a small cluster of birds off Sea Bright, no-one else around, grabbed a light spinner with a 3" kroc, flipped it and let it sink, 5 cranks is all it took, twice around the boat and 10 min. later a 34" bass surfaced and boated. The birds moved about, but the bait and fish were holding. Put the trolling rigs back in and had non-stop action for 3 hrs.. All size bluefish, 5-15 lbs. and 6 bass as noted, keeping 3 with the trophy tag. A super day for October. Happy trails.....

During the outgoing we continued out the Sandy Hook Channel, and towards the Swash. Caught the bass near buoy 14, Sandy Hook Channel, with a wine-colored tube umbrella rig. On the way back we hung up both rigs on the bottom. What a sight it was, my dad and I try to manuever the boat and reel up wire, in the outgoing tide. Bait or Lure: Yo-Zuri Surface Cruiser
Water Depth: 5-14 ft.
Water Temp.:

We ended up with 4 bass in about an hour and a half. All the hits were on top water plugs that were retrived very slowly, often hit on pauses or no motion at all. After it got dark we switched to eeling which was a waste. It looked like all the boats had a tough time eeling so we called it a day early.

Fishing Method: chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-80lbs
Bait or Lure: butters,sardines,live squid,jigs
Water Depth: 500 +
Water Temp.: 63-65?
Information : 4 hours to canyon, set up at 10pm with three fish hooked up on the boat, only landing one.The bite began around 6am,fish were a little line shy, so 50lb and even 40lb flourcarbon were necessary.I landed 3 long fin and Mikey, who didnt hook until the last hour, landed 2 long fin and one nice yellowfin. Captain and crew worked hard for the fish making the trip pleasurable.Capt also opted to stay in extra hour, while the bite was on,after all the other head boats went home. The extra effort I appreciated. Regulars on the boat had their own live wells, and caught squid all night, with small white bird on lite tackle ,it seemed to be the preffered bait.Althoufgh I caught two jigging, and saw many more caught jigging. The seas were kind, only two to threes. Capt kept updating the scope reading, eventaully stating the fish were thick 100 to 220,just keep fishing........ Capt also stated "If your not catching fish try changing something" BINGO A light went off.. I think everone had a good trip, and ended up with fish for dinner. Boat total was around 63, mostly longfin, about a dozen yft,and I heard 1 small bft was boated, also saw one small sword(20lb) caught and released at night with light stick. Supposed to blow this weekend, dont think miss barnaget is going to make it out. Good luck and tight lines. Tom

Date Fished: Oct 21-22
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Swordfish
Size: 120 pounds
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 100 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 67
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie had the Jeff Veith charter from Randolph, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Monday-Tuesday to try and squeeze in another canyon run before we switch over to Stripers for the remainder of the year. While the capture of a swordfish pushing 120 pounds was the highlight of the trip the rest of the trip proved frustrating as we need 40 ounces of lead to keep the baits down and just could not get the bites despite reading the tuna heavy behing the squid boats that have set up on the east wall of the Hudson. Those boats are not exactly the most cooperative to fish with and thus we could not anchor on the fish we marked right on the edge but had to short drift moving 15 times during the night to set on the fish and to avoid being run down by the draggers. Not exactly the best way to spend an evening. We did manage a few yellowfin in the 50-60 pound class but left frustrated as we should have put a beating on the fish.

Information : Not sure why the Capt. chose the Toms, but we had a SLOW night with only 6 tuna boated for 30 anglers. I didn't help dropping 2 due to a broken leader (#40 flouro) and pulled circle hook. All told we had maybe 20 knockdowns, mostly on live bait-ling, squid and spot. A few hits on sardines, nothing on butters. One hit a jig. Also released 2 small swords and had a large mako jumping in the slick. Boat, crew, weather were great. Just needed more action.

Bait or Lure: Butterfish/Sardines
Water Depth: 350
Water Temp.: 64 degrees
Information : Capt Bernie Roth had the John Labash charter on board for a Sunday Monday overnighter. Approaching the east elbow we were all set to drop the lines and troll when we heard that fish were biting on the chunk in daylight. We quickly changed gears and started a drift close to the squid boats and within 10 minutes we had three fish on. We continued drifting and chunking till the following morning when we left for home at 10 am with 17 tuna on ice, 12 longfins and five yellowfins from 60 to 90 lbs. For whatever reason, night chunking this year continues slow. Most of the fish were taken in daylight.

Angler Name : BOB BALIATICO
E-Mail : BALIA160@HOTMAIL.COM
Boat Name: FIRST LIGHT
Date Fished: 10/20 THRU 10/21
Location: EAST OF THE ELBOW
Fishing Method: CHUNK/TROLL
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 80-100 LBS
Bait or Lure: BUTTERS
Water Depth: 415 FEET
Water Temp.: ??? (STILL NO SENSOR) 70 APPROX
Information : Finally, after 3 weeks of wishing, the FIRST LIGHT and crew got a small window to finish up their fall offshore season. Tracking the buoy data we found relatively fishable seas Sunday night into Monday am at the Hudson. We started our drift at 8pm which took us first into the deep water, then as the wind shifted and current slowed, we started to make our way back to the flats just east of the Elbow. Our first bite started around 10pm while still in the 1000 + depths. The first run off was quick, but gone before we touched the rod. That hit got us back to working the lines and chunking more aggressively which brought some huge blue sharks to our stern. It didn't take long for another knockdown which Captain Sean fought nicely to bring the 90 lb YFT to the stern only to see yours truly hit the leader going for the clean head shot. After every apology was given (and excuse made), Captain Sean was given his chance for revenge at my first fish. My 80 lb YFT was brought aboard with a beautiful belly shot by the Captain. Maybe he felt pity for me since I had to work the fish past both a big blue shark and a not so big, but menacing, mako that had now made it's way into our slick. We stayed busy until 4am fighting two nice Blue sharks to the stern before releasing, one for my son Christopher, a 100 pounder, and one for me that should have tipped the scales at Hoffman's close to 200 lbs. There was plenty of YFT action with three others that wreaked havoc with the 60 test fluro and the season old tackle all in 400 feet of water. Sean's brother, Jeff, had two at the stern, both snapping their leader before anyone could get a swipe at them. We went 1 boated for 5 fought to the transom, all in the 80 to 100 class. We also had LFT and large Mahi at the boat, but only for a few minutes and two runoffs. The troll was nonexistent as the huge fleet of trawlers out there drove the fish deep. It was still a great 24 hours, and since our three trip fall 2002 total was 7 YFT and 8 LFT for 20 brought to the boat.

Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Overnigter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 80 pounds
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 67
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie was finally able to get back out to the Hudson Canyon Sunday with the Joe Smith charter from Camden, NJ. This makes our second trip to the edge since October 2 in what has turned out to be one of the worst years for weather we have seen in the last 2 decades as we have had to cancel a total of 57 canyon trips thus far. Fortunately the tuna are there and while we picked one on the troll as soon as we set-up on the chunk during the day the action started in earnest. We quickly hooked-up to three 200 pound bluefins on light leader and despite the charters best efforts after and hour and a half all three fish broke off. We ended up fighting over 20 tuna but luck was not on our side as only 6 hit the deck. In addition, we added our 10th mako of the year caught while overnighting - this one was around 125 pounds.

Information : After an entire month between the pins, I had the usual boys, Joe Yocco, John Cherry, Don Hallingse, and Paul Heinl out sea bassin'. We worked hard for our limit catch south east of Manasquan, but were pleased with the results which included some big (and tasty) trigger fish, a few nice tog and a smattering of bluefish which turned out to be the reason the fishing was not fast and furious. The water down at the bottom is noticeably warm and the blues were cruising through. You could see the sea bass disapear into the wrecks on the scope when the blues would come through. I was very jealous of the boys I heard heading out to the canyon in this weather window, I refuse to take the offshore equipment off the boat until mid November....Cabin fever came early this year!!

Size: 7lbs
Bait or Lure: Green crabs
Water Depth: 50-70ft
Water Temp.: 67dg
Information : Sailed today on the Prowler out of the Atlantic Highlands, on the first and only drop of the day Capt. Scott said that it was a good Blackfish spot, he was not wrong. It was a pick most of the day, the fisherman who do not know how to fish for the white chin had a hard time, but the local sharpies faired well. I went home with 8 good size fish in the box, and a couple of vets. had the limit of 10 fish. I sent about 10 fish back to grow. The Capt. and crew were great, it is alway fun to fish on the boats here in NJ, I fish in Florida lots, and most of the boats suck, but when Im home and go on the NJ boats, its always great. If you can, get in a Tog trip before the snow, try the Prowler in Atlantic Highlands, nice people and a great boat. Tight lines, Pete

Fishing Method: eels - troll
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 0
Bait or Lure: eels - shad rigs - stretches
Water Depth: 15-70 ft.
Water Temp.: 59
Information : Something ain't right - many pick-ups - but I think the combination of moontide (outgoing) and wind out of NW - made it too fast - 8-10 Oz. to hold bottom - many short skinning of our eels - many half eels (blues) - only saw a lot of unhappy fisherman - and 1 or 2 fish netted. Probably should have set up on the chunk. You can't clam fish or worm - because there are 2 million porgies and 2 inch seabass. Better days are coming.

All & all a pretty good day, 50+ fish on the could have easily been alot more. Blue sharks in the water all night chasing hooked fish, also lots of mahi, caught one myself on a surface popper, and a couple more caught on bait. Obviously the Nor'ester took a toll on the Bass as fishing was picking up last week but today we only saw a few Bass and a handful of bluefish trolling green/black umbrella rigs between the Ambrose Channels. Many of our charters are facing the reality of weather just as we are and are begining to switch there canyon trips to Stripers or Sea Bass so the reports shall be picking up soon.

Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 100 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 70
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Jay Richardella and Randy Matlack had the Shawn Sovak charter out on the Canyon Runner in rough seas but in weather that has provided the only window of opportunity in a week. Arriving at the Hudson late due to 6 foot head seas on the way out we missed the best trolling bite but immediately had two on, one of which dump the line on a 50W. That fish was fought for over an hour and turned out to be our mostly unusually catch to date - a 250 pound Hammerhead snagged in the dorsil fin. That set the tone for the evening as the excellant chunking the party boats had in the rough seas died that night and we did not have a hit. Up on the trolling the moring we pick an assortment of fish as longfin, big mahi and even a wahoo were put in the boat. While we did not have the number of fish we have be come accustome to on the Canyon Runner we headed home with 5 flags flying and a happy charter.

Size: mostly 40's and 50's
Bait or Lure: butters and sardines
Water Depth: 460
Water Temp.: ???
Information : Ride out was really really bad...solid 6 to 8 foot seas, a few 10's mixed in. Anchored at 12:30, it was a pick until 3:30 when it just broke wide open. Every live bait put down to 60' to 90' feet was smashed. I personally landed 2, and lost 2 others. Could have hooked up more, but my body just wasn't up to another fight. They kept up the bite until first light when it once again slowed down to a pick. Because of the rough conditions on the ride out, a few guys didn't even make it out of the bunk room until well after the bite was over. The hot bait all night was live sardines or ling, which the captain and mates jigged thoughout the night. Also, there was a school of mahi circling the boat for a good 20 minutes, refused every bait presented to them, oh well. Great trip with a quality captain and crew.

Information : Got a late start fro fishing got out there around 9:00. Turned out the tide was going out and proved to be very productive. We got on the first drift and right away we got over a school of weakfish. We right away put 3 in the boat. Would have gotten more if the Sea Hunter hadnt started his drift about 10 feet infront of us. Wasnt worth the damages on the boat. So we moved on we then found another shool of weakfish. We put another 5 in the boat then again the Sea Hunter came 10 feet in front of us we were forced to move. So after that we called it a day very good fishing. Sand worms seem to be the hot bait, blood worms didnt work to well.

Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Troll/chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 70 lb
Bait or Lure: Jet Ballyhoo / Butter fish
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 70
Information : Started 3 miles shy of the West Wall on the cold side of a weed line once clear of the weeds and in warmer water we went 5 for 5 on Long fin. We set up on the chunk at dark and caught two more Long fins with-in an hour. Throughout the night we had a couple of run offs here and there and boated a Yellow fin. At 3:30 a.m. we hooked a 200+ Mako on a Chunk rig with 80LB floral carbon we had him on for 45 minutes and beat at the boat, but he wrapped the prop. That took 10 minutes to undo as he circled under the boat. After getting him un-done we were 20' from gaffing him and the leader frayed and broke. Just before dawn we boated 2 Long's in 68.4 water. Up on the troll we got 5 more and headed home at 8:30 with our boxes full.

Location: Hudson

Specie: Big-Eye Tuna
Size: 175
Bait or Lure: Bars/Baits/Jets
Water Depth: 800
Water Temp.: 72
Information : Captains Phil Dulanie and Randy Matlack and mate Greg Rybak had the Jeff Hymowitz charter from Manhattan out on the Canyon Runner Monday to Tuesday and picked up right where they left off before the last bad weather. Within minutes of reaching the east wall of the Husdon Canyon we had a big-eye attack the ballyhoo trolled down the middle and after 50 minutes Greg darted the fish which pushed 175 pounds. Back up on the troll we had a decent longfin bite and proceeded to put 16 longfin in the boat in a couple hours of trolling. Most of the longfin averaged 40-50 pounds. Just before dark we missed another big-eye. The chunk was slow as on a 90 pound yellowfin and another lognfin were added to the catch but with 19 tuna on ice we were done and came home early without trolling in the morning. The longfin hit almost anything but ballyhoo and mini-mamba bars produced best.
