Most boats headed for the barn earlier than usual on both days. I heard of only one Striper caught and that was at The Shrewsbury Rocks. Of course, if you look at Betty And Nicks web sight, there's so many fish being caught, its a miracle. Are they fishing the same ocean as the rest of us??? The fish just aren't here yet. In fact, we heard one guy on the radio saying that this has been the worst year he could remember for Stripers.

Information : Took advantage of the unusually nice october weather to schedule three consecutive charters. On thursday friday had the H&R welding group on board and fished the east wall near the draggers. They had a nice pick of larger size yellowfins to 100lbs and ended up with 15 yellowfins and 6 mahi on ice. This was their first canyon experience and they did very well handling the yellowfins. On saturday sunday had the Ron Antonelli fishing team on board and we set up on the east wall again. They started by hooking up a triple of yellowfins and broke one off in a tangle. They continued picking fish through the night and left with 11 yellowfins, one longfin and four mahi on ice. On monday tuesday had the John Labash group on board and started on the east wall where they boated two longfins. Action slowed and we moved to the west wall where we drifted with no action. Heard some good reports near the 150/050 and moved to that area and drifted. At 2:30am the fish found our slick and they left at sunrise with 20 yellowfins and 3 longfins on ice.

Water Depth: 60 - 100 feet
Water Temp.: ~ 65 degrees Fahrenheit
Information : Yesterday, we had a dream trip on Captain John Brackett's Queen Mary. The action was vigorous both jigging and chumming. Blues typically ranged from about 8 to 13 pounds. There were only 15 of us on board so there was a minimum of tangles and lost fish. My buddy and I each took home 5 fish, cleaned and fileted on board. After catching 7 a piece, we decided to enjoy the boat ride. Many on board caught the limit (15 fish) but released most of them. Some had the chance to use light tackle (10 pound test). All this was made possible by the skill of Cptain and crew in finding, instructing, and assisting with boating the fish. I have had many fishing fantasies but this was truly a real memorable fishing outing.

Caught a few maui and a longfin, had a few run offs and some lost fish and a huge shark that came up to the back of the boat took three baits and kept on going. It was a slow night until Greg from the Triple Threat gave us a call from a mile away and said he was done fishing and we could have his spot. It was non stop fishing from 12:30 to 4:00. It went dead for a couple of hours and when the sun came up so did the tuna. The morning bite was great and all the fish were over 80 pounds. When we decided to leave we had 20 yellow, 1 long, and 7 maui. The best trip all season hope to get out again.

Information : Arrived at the canyon about 3:3O looking for a pot to tie up to. Went along the west wall looking for fish on the sounder and saw nothing. Moved over to the east wall and anchored in about 450 feet of water and started to chunk. After about a half an hour, it felt like the boat was moving. Those of you who were out there might remember a commercial boat dragging his nets thru the fleet--well, he snagged my anchor line and started to pull the boat! After calling him on the vhf, he pulled in his net and dropped the anchor down in about 350 feet of water. The commercial captain was cool about the whole situation and no 'problems' arose from the situation. Started chunking again and had none stop action until about 11:00 pm. Went 7 out of 12 and one blue shark released. A great trip with Mark, Dennis and Ed.

The Dr. John Bednar charter from Cherry Hill, NJ got into the yellowfin as soon as we set up on the drift. However, the bite was not consistant and we had to move several times to put a catch together. While we did not end out canyon season with a limit catch we did put together another double digit catch of yellowfin - putting 11 in the boat. Our 25th double digit catch of tuna this year.

Nothing but large flounder; makes me sick the commercial trollers can keep them and we can't. We were going to run to the AC Reef to look for blues, but decided to head south instead and stopped at the Stone Beds off Ocean City. Good choice, we had steady action of 6-7 lb false albacore on light tackle for two hours. Lots of fun and a good thing so we didn't get skunked.

Information : The weatherman called for 1 footers, but we got pounded by 3 foot chop with an occasional 4 mixed in. But it was worth it. We had two quick run-offs that were missed within 1/2 hour of setting up. When the tide turned, the chop laid down and we were able to catch two nice bass of 34" and 40". It was a georgous, almost 80 degree Indian summer day. On Sunday, I was assurred by the Bailey's Bait shop on 47 that I was getting fresh bunker. Fresh bunker does not fall apart when you cut it. Be suspicous of bait purchased there. We headed back to the same spot as Saturday. We had two run-offs that were missed, and that was it for the day. The kids on this trip had a ball catching croakers so the trip was not a total loss. And my buddy Capt Ed gave us a nice fish, so we had some meat for the dinner table.

Information : After 2 months on land (due to the birth of my son and the need for parenting and wife support) I finally got the 'ol Saint Jude out to the canyon for some quality male bonding and some pretty good fishing to boot. Once the cobwebs were out, (and Dave Bender of Jenny lee tipped me off) we were able to set up on top of some nice yellowfins and catch 8 for 12 before it got dark. There were also some "long Island Bigeyes" (BFT) around. we hooked into two of these freighttrains only to lose both. I was spooled on a #50 with 80lb. test... straight down! man can those fish fight... By sunrise and after a restful night (barely threw a chunk between 10pm and 4am) we had a dozen big YFT in the boxes and released a blueshark. When I went to fire up the engines, I found out the hard way that the battery charger had stopped working properly.... Hate the dead battery clicking sound 82 miles from the slip. Jenny lee came through again for us (thank you Dave) with a kicker charger (he is in the towing business too) that coupled with jumper cables to my genny's battery gave enough juice to fire them up. NOAA did another bang up job with the forecast 2-3 footers that were more like 4-7 (on the chin) But I was happy to take the beating as long as my engines were running.. Nice to have friends offshore...

The horrible fishing of September now a distant memory we are back into the tuna like the way it should be during the fall canyon season. Pulling up to the edge before dark we did not even begin chunking when the first baited line went in the water and we were hooked up. Once we started chunking it got better. With 2 fish on at all times and over 40 fish hooked-up it was not long before the boxes were full. The yellowfin went between 50-80 pounds and we put 23 in the boat plus released another 8 (some of which were mutilated by the numerous sharks around the boat all night).

Information : No fish but plenty of netters working the beach. They were keeping stripers to! They are taking advantage of the law enforcement agencies being buzy with national security tasks. If anyone sees a netter working inside of one mile, he is breaking the law. The New Jersey Department of Fish and Game will take action. Call the Operation Game Thief hotline at 1-800-222-0456. Provide the name and fisheries number of the violator. Also give them your GPS or Loran location from OFFSHORE of the net. You can also photograph the boat with the beach in the background. When you call, the Division will give you a number that you can call in a few weeks to find out what was done about the violation. These netters have ruined entire seasons in recent years. Do your part to push them back out where they belong. Tom

Information : Fished the night trip with Capt Jerry and the guys on Thurs, Fri, and Sat night. Although fishing was slow for me the first two nights. I followed up with a limit and a big fish of approx 20lbs on Sat. One note, lots of fisherman on board asking how I was getting the bites. Two things: 1.Flourocarbon leaders and 2.In a wind against tide situation it may be neccessary to create your own movement. Just a little movement when the Capt can't get the boat to drift (due to wind and tide) will sometimes make the difference. I was casting and retrieving my eel while everyone else appeared to be letting it drift with the boat (which was moving very little) Good Luck and Tight Lines

Information : We thought that we had picked the perfect day. The fishing was good 10/3 and 10/4. The winds were predicted out of the SW. The strong cold front was due the following day and the day was a warm fall day. What was wrong with this picture? The fish didn't understand the positive signs. There were about 20 people on the Queen Mary. The average catch was 1-2 per man. The high hook was about 5 fish. Brother Joe had 3 and I had one. It was a tough day. Nothing would touch jigs or spearing. They wanted bunker backs and butterfish. Wire leaders did not matter. The fish were just not on. No albies or bonitas were caught. Just the same it was a great day to be out on the water and not at work.

Water Depth: 600+

Information : Tunas were very picky. We trolled from 3PM till dark, boating 2 dolphins and a skippy. Anchored up on the east wall and fished from dark till 8AM. 9 anglers boated 21 longfin and 3 yelowfin, with most of the bite coming at 4AM on butterfish. Fish quit at 7:15 AM. With one exception, the tuna did not crash the bates. They would mouth them like a fluke and then slowly get up steam and go. Very rough wind and water on Wednesday night and Thursday AM hampered fishing as we were doing the do-see-do switching from port to starboard every ten minutes as the boat would twist 180 degrees around the anchor. Fun trip and another great performance by Captain Kenny and mates Bill and Chris! These guys are the best!

Information : Moved along the beach at parking A23. Fished from 1130-6:30pm. Had one small striper hit my blue/white bucktail when it was practically at my feet. The lure hardly fit in its mouth and it popped right out. Most of the day I plugged the surf expecting alot more action. I was suprised I didnt catch more than just one large sea robin. I did see 2 guys catch small striper on clam around 5pm. The surf seemed perfect and I did see some baitfish jumping around within casting distance. I have a feeling that the high bright sun and warm temps yesterday may have had something to do with my poor luck or perhaps the time of day or maybe I'm just looking for excuses? In the past though during October, I've had much more productive days but those days were all overcast instead of bright sun. Information : Captain Phil Dulanie was back out to the Hudson Canyon for his 52nd canyon trip of the year with the Dave France charter from Flemington, NJ. Not knowing what to expect after this weekends blow we headed to the east wall and set up on the troll. Trolling produced nothing but a few skipjack. On the chunk we had an eventful night as we had fish in the slick fairly consistently however we only had 4 shots at yellowfin but managed to put all 4 in the boat between 70-110 pounds. In addition, we baited Mahi through-out the night putting at least a couple dozen in the boat. Unfortunately, we the coming of yet another front is does not look like we will get another shot at the canyon until late in the weekend. Oh well, that's October on the edge.
