Angler Name : Gene Karlson
E-Mail : Matawan, N.J.
Boat Name:
Date Fished: 11-29-99
Location: I.B.S.P.
Fishing Method: Surf
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 25"-30"
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 0'-30'
Water Temp.: Chilly
Information : After doing the Thanksgiving weekend Striper get together with my 10 friends on IBSP, I was the one who got the keeper this year. Monday with the wind out of the west I fished for about 2 1/2 hours. I got 3 shorts first, then my 30" 8-9lb Keeper and then a Seagull, yes a Seagull. I thought I had a 50lb Striper on the way the reel sounded as the Seagull got caught in my line. I was able to carefully time the waves as not to drown the Seagull as I brought him to shore and gently remove the 3 wraps of line around the tip of his wing. He didn't seem too happy about meeting me this way but we became friends in each others eyes and he flew away unharmed, a little scared, but unharmed. Another exciting day of fishing, gotta love it!

Angler Name : Ed Gillin

Boat Name:
Date Fished: 11/29/99
Location: OC Jetty
Fishing Method: Plugging
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 35" 15lbs.
Bait or Lure: black bomber / broken back
Water Depth: 3
Water Temp.: 51
Information : Here goes nothing, I have been fishing for last couple of weeks and have caught some small fish and have seen some larger fish when there was bait. The surf was up for the last couple of days and some guys were catching fish here and there but the regulars were sort of thinking it was near the end for beach fishing. Matter of fact, one guy who I seen regularly fishing the beach said that he would only fish this time of year when he sees birds. I took what he said and left it up to what I know. I heard there was still bunker in the back bay. I heard that some guys were picking up fish. I knew the wind was offshore,it was cold, and the bait would be getting blown out of the bay. Also, no one else was fishing. I managed to take a wave in the face that washed down my shirt. I thought that this would probably be one of my last times and maybe the oldtimer was right and that it was nearing the end and I would be wasting my time. 35 inches, and 15 lbs. later I think there are a few days left in the season on the beach.

Water Depth: 90-110 ft.
Water Temp.: 56 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula had the Bounty Hunter from Clarks Landing Marina out with John Adamcik and members of the East Hanover Tuna Club for a day of wreckfishing. After 3 weeks of Striper fishing it was a pleasant change. Running 26 miles to the Southeast, our first stop in 90 ft. of water produced a bonanza of large Seabass as double headers up to 4 l/2 lbs continuously came over the rail. The second stop in 110 ft. proved just as productive as the large Seabass continued to bite. Mixed in with the Bass were the occasional Blackfish, Ling and Porgy. 10 to 20 ft. above the wreck you could catch all the 1 to 2 lb. Bluefish you wanted. At days end we had filled a very large Igloo cooler with Seabass, Ling, Blackfish & Blues.

Information : We started Thanksgiving by going out of Beach Haven inlet and proceeded up the beach to the red tower. We were looking for birds and bass on top of the water - nothing. We then started trolling back toward the inlet. We finally found the bass - they would come up on top of the water for a feww minutes and then go back down. We caught fish with poppers and plugs. The bass were knocking my popper up out of the water. It was a great way to start the long weekend.

The largest Bass were in the 30" range. Blue and white and yellow Shads were the colors for today. Top feeding Bass were to busy with rainfish to show any interest in plugs or jigs.

Bait or Lure: FIN S/POPPERS
Water Depth: 10-30
Water Temp.:
Information : As we broke the Inlet in the early AM in flat calm seas, we headed north and started to troll rigs. I marked a lot of bait with fish around the balls of bait but there was no action. I only heard of a couple small fish that were caught around Seaside Park. After the wind changed a picked up we trolled back to the Inlet to find a massive school of fish in the Inlet feeding on peanut bunker. We through everything in the box to catch anywhere between 30-35 bass in a short time. We had four keepers out of all those fish. Surface plugs seemed to work the best. As soon as the plug hit the water there were fish fighting over it. Jigging even produced a lot of fish. You did not have to stay with the birds. Just drop a jig down to the bottom and wham you had one one. Bubble Gum Fin S seemed to be the ticket. Another great day of bass fishing. Tight Lines.

Bait or Lure: Umbrella Rigs
Water Depth: 55-65 ft.
Water Temp.: 55 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula ran his Bounty Hunter up to the Shrewsbury Rocks for the second day in a row with the Steve Won charter. The zero visibility fog which plagued us for the last 3 days could not hide the feeding birds because the radar picked them up 4 1/2 miles away. Once again the top feeding Bass would not respond to Jigs, Poppers or Bucktails, however trolling Umbrella Shad Rigs in 55 to 65 ft. of water was the way to go. Four solid hours of action yielded over 50 short Bass between 22 and 27 inches, and 12 keeper Striped Bass up to 33" were put in the fish box. Hot colors today were blue and white and black and white Shads.

Information : fished both days-gorgeous out; sunday the watere was flatter than a lake, the only thing bad was we had the wrong tide. fished slack and the outgoing tide, nothing. we made many drifts on close to the beach, one take and i lost it, i nevr should have put the rod in the rod holder, the fish took off!. . . and dropped it. One cool part of the day was seeing a seal, i couldnt believe it. this thing must have weighed 50++ pounds, it was huge, i have heard of seal sightings around the hudson, but right off sandy hook? a hundred yards off the beach in the bay? even thought we did not get any fish it was still a great day

Lots of knockdowns. Missed the first 4 hookups. The fleet grew SO large it was necessary to move further south. GLAD we did !!! NON STOP action for the next 3 hours. Plenty of markings. Knockdown after knockdown. Best action was in 50-60 ft. of water ALL on white or black and white shad bodies umbrella rigs on wire line with a 15 foot leader with a 6 oz. trolling drail. Unfortunately, as everyone who was trying to cast to these fish found they were unresponsive to lure as they appear to be feeding on tiny rainfish. What we did notice was that on the umbrella rigs that we put 10oz of weight and let out 300 feet of wire while trolling in 45 feet of water did produce strikes from almost entirely keeper size Stripers. The total for the day included 8 keepers to 37" with only 10 shorts. Not the type of fishing we have come accustomed to but not bad.

I noticed all of the fleet close to the beach so, I did my business and got my gear. I arrived at the beach at 12:00PM and did not leave till 5:00. I have not seen that much bait since the mullet run. I stayed put, and managed to catch 30 stripers. I was lucky to say the least, I have had a Rat L trap lure in my bag for 3 years and have never caught a thing on it. I saw a guy hook up with three fish one after another, so I put that one on. Every cast was either a bunker on the lure or a bass. What a day!! my arms were aching. It was truly the best place to be. Needless to say I woke up at dawn on Saturday only to catch seaweed. No birds, no bait , nothing business as usual.

We caught about 30 fish with two keepers. Most of the action was by letting the wind blow the boat and dropping the bucktails straight down and letting the wind do the jigging. We went close to the beach and then proceeded to go over the outerbars with the wind pushing us it worked everytime. Also, caught some fish on top with poppers. It was a little crowded at first but I was glad to finally be on the other side of the fence. I could see my fellow beach fisherman looking really disgusted. I personally caught 7 fish with one straighting my barrelswival spring clip. Oh, well they are finally here!!!

Information : Fished Goveners Is. in NY harbor for the incomming tide. Everyone was quite busy. Piles of bass were everywhere. Most fish were short but managed two keepers. Headed south to the knoll, drifted eels and jiged for the remainder of the tide. It payed off with 3 keepers of 11lbs, 14lbs & 19.9lbs. Did'nt notice any bird activity south of the verrazano. Most boats trolling were picking through shorts. Eels and jigs seemed to trick the keepers on the knoll.

Information : Carl, Terry, and Ray joined me on THE ROAD for a day of Stripped Bass fishing. Friday Lou and I managed several short bass. Late on Friday while working a school of bait we hooked a fish that we fought for 30 minutes before the hook pulled. It took 50 pound line off a 113H even while we backed down. Five minutes later we hooked another monster only to pull the hook again! We got to the same area about 10:00AM Saturday. Several other boats were working the area and some birds were also working. Our first troll through the bait produced a 32" Stripper. We continued to work the area about one mile off the beach rest of the day. We ended with three keeper Strippers, several shorts and a couple of bluefish. The school of bait continued to grow; but we did not mark many fish. I hope all we need is some cold weather to push them south.

Information : Fished with two friends Friday on Nelson's 20' Striper. We launched @ 7:30 from Leonardo. Man the water was moving from the day before and the wind was still up but subsiding. We saw birds on boiling bass chasing peanut bunker everywhere. If you could stay w/ the birds you could catch bass - mostly shorts though we did manage 2 keepers. We were surprised and disappointed by the number of boats including the Bounty Hunter which insisted on trolling while you could catch all the bass you wanted casting lures. Many trolling boats and some other boneheads would run through the schools pushing the bass down and away. I guess some guys just like doing things the hard way and don't care much about sport. All told, it was an excellent day on the water - the bay and inlet was alive with fish!

Water Depth: 9 - 34 ft.
Water Temp.: 59
Information : Left the dock at 5:30AM. We met a 4-5ft. swell at the inlet, and it followed us all the way down to the rips, giving us that stop and go effect. Stopped short of prissy wick, where we had some marks, and got the first one right away. Made a few more drifts with no results, so we moved into prissy wick shoal. We enjoyed the steady action thru the flood tide, every drift had either a run off, or a missed hook set, a nibble, or a hook up. Ended the day with a limit catch. Thanks to Fred and Marty's trophy tags, we were able to extend our limit by two fish for a total of 8 keepers, we also had 2 shorts. The best day fishing for stripers in a couple of years.

Information : Ran out today around noon, didn't have anything better to do. Got to the beach, tons of fishermen minus the fish. Went all the way out to the point, a few boats drifting, not a fish on shore. Went to the bay side and was greeted by a thousand birds, all working out of casting distance. There was 1 boat on them whom I'm sure slaughtered them. They came within casting distance once and had a monster swirl behind my popper but he didn't take it. They moved back ouyt of range, so i decided to get outta there. As I was driving home over the Highlands bridge, I caught a glimpse of a few boats literally sitting on shore with a few million birds around them. Turned right around got to the beach, and wouldn't you know it, they moved out of casting range. That seems to be the story of my life. The Belmar Princess was all the way up here jigging so that lets you know that there aren't any fish down south......yet.

Got into fish right away as we set up maybe 1/2 mile directly East of the Bridge, and drifted that area the entire day, but we did slip up as far as the Cedars on the Southern part of Sandy Hook.. Bird play was spotty, and the fishing wasn't tremendous, but it was a steady pick for the anglers in the bow.. I boated 6 bass, biggest 27.5", and about 4 or 5 blues in the 4-6lb. class, all on a 4 oz. Crippled Herring.. Quite a few guys came away w/ that forever famous goose-egg, and there were just 3 keepers boated.. High hook probably had 8 bass... Good day, nice weather.. Tight lines..

During this 3 hour period I managed to catch 15 shorts on a plain jig head with a finesse fish. Went to the Rip to drift eels for a keeper, and did not get a strike. Went into the Reach and fished under smaller pods of birds then in the morning and caught 4 more shorts on 3 oz jig head and sassy shad fish. Decided to concentrate on getting a keeper, and went to drift eels between the lighthouse and the V Bridge. During my second drift I caught a 30 keeper on an eel, and lost a fish at the boat on an eel. I repeated the drift and caught another keeper 32. On my way back to the dock fished under birds again, Chapel area, caught 3 more on Avs. A great day of fishing and some great weather

The bass will be there at quarter to 9 in the AM. No, I am serious the last two days I have gotten up at dark only to come back later 9:00 AM or high tide and wha la!! there are bait and bass all over the beach. So, fish either at complete darkness or during the day because all the other falacies don't work. I might go up at lunch during full sun and 70's air temp that might work... Date Fished: Sunday Nov. 7,99
Location: Out of Brielle
Fishing Method: Bait on the bottom
Specie: Ling (AKA Red Hake)
Size: Up to 20"
Bait or Lure: mackerel, squid, clam
Water Depth: 100+'
Water Temp.: unknown
Information : There was a steady blow all day, up to 25-30 knots, seas up to 8+'. Despite the weather, Captain Dale had us over structure the whole day. 1st drop had mostly throw back Sea Bass, so we pulled up anchor for drop #2. Here we found more keepers, mine averaged 14". 6-8 oz of lead held bottom on these two drops. The third drop produced mostly nice size ling, up to 20", and alot of lost rigs grabbed by the sticky bottom. (I lost my whole supply of 10 & 12 oz. sinkers here). For a 4th drop we caught more Sea Bass, and a 5th drop produced decent size Sea Bass and more Ling. Incidentals were a few,(not many),cunners, I saw one dogfish, a few small tog, and a couple bluefish. This was a 14 hour trip, so I was able to enjoy a great pre-dawn, sunrise, and sunset. Also, the wind painted waves, good swells and white caps all about, were healing to my eyes. The gulls grabbed some fish and put on a show, and these things alone were worth the fare. As a bonus I had a fish on my line EVERY time I dropped it down, except for when it got snagged. When the horn sounded I was glad to quit fishing due to an aching old back...so was the guy next to me. The mates were nice to me, the Captain did an admirable job keeping us over structure despite the rough, wind driven seas. I was able to put fish in my freezer and Bless 5 other households with some fresh fish. I added another great memory to my mental video.

Information : The Frank Cardaci charter was aboard the Canyon Runner on Sunday and Captain Phil Dulanie with Captain Joe Dalik (Moondancer) helping out in the cockpit put together a solid catch of Stripers. Trolling once again between Ambrose Channel with shad umbrella rigs the charter boated 25 Bass with 8 keepers to 17 pounds as well as a bunch of Bluefish. While a great day was had by all, the 35 knot NorthWest winds produced steep waves at the mouth of Raritan Bay which on the downside made fishing tough. However, on the the upside, the crowd that we were forced to fished in on Saturday was no where to be found and it was like fishing in the middle of the week, "alone again, naturally."

Ran all the way back to the hook, and had good action fishing the rip off Sandy Hook Channel for the next 3 hours w/ big jigs, like AVA47 or 67's, 5 oz. Crippled Herrings, and the like.. Wind/tide combo made for a real fast drift.. Drift after drift produced numerous shorts, plus a few keepers.. Finished up the day in the ocean off Ambrose Channel picking at some more schoolies working under birds.. My total for the day was 6 bass, all between 20-26", and one 5 lb. blue.. 5 Keepers were taken on the boat, out of about 35 anglers.. After about 20 minutes the fished stopped breaking water and went down with all the damn boats running through the school. We mad a trip up to the reach and saw a large fleet trolling, they picked up some nice fish but we were unfortunate and we did not have the umbrella rigs with rubber shad, the choice of most anglers. The next place we stopped was bouy 12 and 11 which always holds fish. we made one drift and bang, three hook-ups at once. we made that drift 5-6 more times and picked up 2-3 fish each drift. all fish were shorts, 25-27 inches, great day!

No fish were caught until we found the breaking fish (and many other boats) around Sandy Hook. Everyone was casting metal. High hooks on the boat were 5 (I was one of them). Some guys didn't get any. Only 1 keeper at about 30" was caught on the boat. In general, the readings were good up to Sandy Hook but they weren't biting. A few blues were caught in the 6 - 8 pound range. The Capt. and crew did a good job. It might take another week or two to hit the right water temps. Go get 'em.

Information : I fished the incoming tide on the north end of OC. Waves were about 5ft. and winds were out of the south at anywhere from 20-40 mph. Great day to sit at home. It started to ran and and the wind and waves were proving too much. I snagged a skate on the wing and that was the fish of the day. I love the quote "Stripers love noreasters! the worse conditions the better the fishing." yeah right, I will stick to the days when the mullet are running, the water is seventy something, and the bass are at your feet on a bright sunny September day.

Trolling by the Ambrose channel with black/white and blue/white shad we boated 30+ Stripers with 6 keepers to 17 pounds. Most of the action occurred on the outgoing tide and we read a lot more fish than we hooked. It seems the Bass are feeding on rain fish and are not hitting the shad that readily.

Fishing Method: Drifting Live Eels
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 28"-42"
Bait or Lure: Live Eels
Water Depth: Variable
Water Temp.: 59.8-61.7 degrees
Information : I had the Adam Bomb out with two other anglers aboard abd fished the incoming tide in the morning on Friday, October 29 and managed to boat seventeen keeper bass with the biggest going 30 pounds. We were working Prissy Wick Shoal along with a few other boats who were also catching fish. It was a fantastic day in the rips. We also fished yesterday, November 1, and were treated to another good, early morning bite at Prissy Wick. Just before dawn and shortly thereafter, we managed to boat nine bass to twenty five pounds. We fished the bottom of the incoming and the bite slowed down considerably once the tide turned and the boat traffic picked up. Fishing was very frustrating in the late morning hours yesterday as boats roared across and down the rips. The importance of keeping your speed to a minimum(5 or 6 knots) while in the rips cannot be overemphasized. There would have been many, many more fish caught if everyone would have took it slow, went around the rips rather than through them, and cooperated with their fellow anglers. This is very important to the quality of fishing for everyone in the rips! Anyway, hopefully the action which we have been seeing will continue through December. Tight Lines, Adam.
