Boat Name: Risa
Date Fished: 11/29/98
Location: T-Bird - Seaside
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 32"
Bait or Lure: bunker spoons
Water Depth: 50-70'
Water Temp.: low 50's
Information : Spent most of the day (10 AM - 3 PM) on the troll. I guess with spoons you don't catch as many fish, but they are consistently bigger. Hooked two 32" keepers and snagged a 27" fish in the dorsal fin area. Got a bit of exercise reeling in that sideways fish with the spoon about 300'. Also boated a good-sized slammer. The first fish (32" keeper) was taken off Seaside in about 65' at around 11 AM. The second keeper was taken off the T-Bird at 3 PM in about 55'. I wished the linesider who followed the second keeper to the boat took the spoon instead. Looked to be quite a few inches bigger. Was a great day! Hope for a few more before winter.

Boat Name: THE ROAD
Date Fished: 11/29/98
Location: Off Lavallette
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: To 35''
Bait or Lure: Plastic
Water Depth: 68'
Water Temp.: 51.9
Information : Got a very late start because everyone had the stomach bug. I decided to go it alone. Once I broke the inlet at about 12:30PM I headed south. Got a report of fish in deeper water around Lavallette. When I got to the area everyone had left; but the fish were still there. By this time the fleet had moved to the T-Bird and it sounded like some were jigging good fish. I caught 18 keeper bass to 35" in just about 2 hours of trolling. Kept two and let the rest go. My best bait was an 11" Rapala and next was a Giant Trembler. Both of these baits do well on Blue Fin Tuna in the early season. I was trolling about 2.8-3.5 Knots. By the way I was about 2 miles offshore. Maybe next time I can get some of my so-called fishing buddies to go!

Boat Name: Chuckwagon
Date Fished: November 28 & 29
Location: Cape May Rips, Hereford Inlet
Fishing Method: Bucktailing
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 20" - 32"
Bait or Lure: White Bucktails with Rubber Trailer
Water Depth: >25
Water Temp.: 53?
Information : Saturday definitely proved to be the tougher of the two days to fish this weekend in the Cape May Rips. Finding clean water, let alone clean water that promoted a good drift. Wind against the tide definitely hurts the chances of putting some bass in the boat, as we discovered on Saturday. Tim Davis, dockmaster at Moran's Dockside Bait and Tackle recommends, "Leave the eels to those who keep stealing ours, bring out the bucktails and the teasers above them." All but one of the 15+ shorts we had in the Rips over the weekend were caught on white one ounce or heavier bucktails with Kalin' Evil Eels with simple bucktail or sassy shad teasers about two feet above them. Early in the AM, try the NW edge of Prissy Wicks, there seems to be a nice edge forming there even when the tide slacks. Sunday, we started at that spot and caught a short there and two shorts out at North Shoal when we were sent racing to the northeast at the report of a blitz at Hereford Inlet. Good Call on going north on this unusually flat and mild day, as we bailed short bass and a few slammer blues for at least ninety minutes before an excess of boat traffic sent the fish down. Today was one of the few days that I have ever wished for a fly rod. Fish were chasing milling pods of peanut bunker, herring and a few sand eels. Casting the same bucktails, Yozuris, Sassy Shads etc. caught fish up top all day long as we picked away after the birds settled down. Even the Jorgenson father-son team caught their first bass and first keeper bass in this frenzy. Crush your barbs, you'll appreciate it when the bass are rolling around your boat and the treble hook has the bass' mouth closed shut. Party boats did a knock up job on the shorts this weekend, I know that the Miss Avalon II had a 41# bass on Friday along with tons of big blues and rat rockfish and then shared the blitz on Sunday with us. If you're bored or pulled your boat, jump on a party boat, good crew, good fishing, good fun and you don't have to clean theThe Crew of the Chuckwagon

Boat Name: Cock Robin - Pt Pleasant
Date Fished: 11/29/98
Location: Seaside to Manasquan Inlet
Fishing Method: Jigging
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: shorts to 36"
Bait or Lure: White Bucktails/porkrind
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Boat sailed south and located fish within 20 minutes. Striped Bass were breaking all over surface, except when some boats would get excited, get too close and spook the fish! The Cock Robin chased fish all day with multiple hook-ups by all 20 fisherman on several ocassions. My son and I appeared to be the only two fisherman using White Bucktails, tipped with White Porkrind tied directly to the line - no snaps no swivels. I believe we out fished most fisherman on the boat 10-1, including the POOL fish, caught by Michael III, a 14.3 lb Striper. Some fisherman did change to bucktails while others remained with metal jigs. Fish were caught by all, but only 5 keeper bass came to the Dock and we came home with two (2). It was a very successful day with over 50 Shorts between the two of us. A good Captain (Ron) and Mate (Bill) who provide a lot of good fishing advise to make it a most enjoyable day. We'll be back in Pt. Pleasant before Christmas to jig a few more Keepers.

Fishing Method: Throwin' Lures
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: shorts 18 - 20 inches
Bait or Lure: rubber things with hooks
Water Depth: 10 - 15 feet
Water Temp.:
Information : Just doing some early morning Stripper hunting and caught a few shorts by working my lure deep instead of on the surface. About 5 of us watched what sure appeared to be "whales" moving about a mile off shore. (Is that possible?) We saw numerous blows of spray go 7 to 10 feet in the air... much to high for a splash of a jumping fish. (I went whale watching once in Maine and this sure looked like the same deal.) On the fish side of this story, we did see plenty of surfacing fish about 1/2 mile off shore also.

Water Depth: 55'

We caught three keepers: 29", 33" and 34" and no others between 11 AM and 1 PM. THESE WERE THE FIRST STRIPERS I HAVE CAUGHT! We tried jigging near the beach with no luck. Lots of birds and peanut bunker around. The fish caught were outside the main area of bird/bait interaction and in 50-60 feet of water. On the way back to Manasquan we stopped off Mantoloking where there were some boats working on an area of bitds/bait. We put the spoons back in but only hooked into a large slammer. All four fish boated (and a few others that hit) went for the large bunker spoon. Seems like it was all we needed this day. Thanks for the reports - keep 'em coming!

Information : Had birdplay all day with mostly short bass chasing peanut bunker. We caught many on jigs then switched to 6" Bomber's. Almost every cast resulted into a hookup for over three hours. Moved to deeper water with structure late in the afternoon and caught 4 keepers from 33" to 44" on diamond jigs,

Location: Bayhead
Fishing Method: trolling/jigging
Specie: Weakfish
Size: to 27inches
Bait or Lure: Bucktail/mullet
Water Depth: 35 feet
Water Temp.: 53
Information : Fished Sunday afternoon south of Bayhead. Saw strippers killing bunker but all I could catch was bluefish. Tried trolling bunker spoons with no luck. My 28' Bertram just goes too fast on both engines; and too crooked on one! My fish finder showed plenty of nice marks near the bottom. After dropping a bucktail we were rewarded with the biggest weakfish I have ever caught. I sure would like to hook one more bluefin tuna this season.

Information : Got out to the hook at 8:00 and followed some small schools of bass but didnt have much luck with them. Saw a nice school at 9:30 off of seabright and stayed with them till 2:00. Was the only boat in the area and had no birds working around them. Caught over 50 short from about 12"-26" between the 3 of us. Hit nothing but bucktails. Saw alot of guys trolling but didn't see any fish caught. On the way back to the hook, you could see nothing but birds all over the beach to about 2 miles out. Alot of bass feeding on what looked to be sand eels. Used a a27 and picked up few and everything shut down. Hopefully the bigger fish will arrive soon.

Water Depth: 35-55

Information : Cleared inlet at 0730 and headed south. Stopped off south Bay Head on good readings but fish wouldn't cooperate. Continued south chasing birds but heavy boat traffic kept breaking up the fish. Set up to troll black umbrellas ahead of fin-s bunkers off Ocean Beach and started picking up 25-30 in. Bass. Off Seaside Pier ran into Bluefish and tripple headered both umbrellas at the same time. Switched to jigging after untangling everything. Green Tails worked best on small avas. Bass and Blues were mixed with the occasional Weakfish. Caught all we wanted from 10 until heading in at 1:30. Biggest Bass 30 in.,Weakfish 26 in., Bluefish 9 lbs. At times fish could be seen chasing Peanut Bunker on top. Readings indicate lots of bait in the Seaside area. Fishing should hold up as long as the bait does. Good Luck to All. TB.

I wound up with one keeper out of 4 fish, and everyone else did about the same, some got a big goose egg.. The pool winner was a whopping 18 incher.. Captain and crew did a great job trying to put us on fish.. That's why it's called fishing and not catching.. Better luck next time!

Water Depth: 60'
Water Temp.: low 50's
Information : Came out of barney and saw no birds working, so headed north and picked a few bass right off the bottom. Got a report from a friend of mine fishing off of seaside and headed north. Saw the birds working on schools of blues mixed sized, and bass. Although mostly shorts, we managed to pick up 4 keepers to 31". Blues were from 4-10 lbs all on jiggs. Fish had full bellies of peanut bunkers and sand eels. Fishing got hot about 10 o'clock which was a change of pace from a few weeks ago when all the fish i got were early in the morning. Fished till about 12:30 with about 30 blues, 4 keeper bass, and about 10 throwback bass. We should all thank our fellow fisherman for taking the time out to write up our reports because I know by reading them and planning we have increased our catch of fish and by going stait to were the fish are and not waste our time. I've caught more bass and blues this year off the surf than i did in the last 3 years. Could be the increase in fish this year, but mainly just follow your reports. We haven't had alot of jerks writing foolish reports like some other sites.Tight lines and good luck.

Location: Belmar - Jetties
Fishing Method: Bottom Fishing
Specie: Winter Flounder
Size: 10 - 15 inches
Bait or Lure: herring
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : After the stippers quit biting (I landed six in the Shark River inlet at sunrise. ) I got interested in watching a guy who was pulling in one winter flounder after another off the jetties in the Belmar area. Several were fishing for the winter flounder but only this one guy was pulling one in every 10 minutes or so. I personally watched him catch about 25+ fish and he must have had 40+ before he left. The difference.... he was using herring instead of the squid that most had. (As luck would have it, I only had sand worms.... and they were expensive and useless!!)

Specie: Bluefish
Size: 8-10
Bait or Lure: Bunker Spoons/Tubes
Water Depth: 24-47

Information : Broke Barnegat Inlet and ran north up to the old coast guard station to find a large fleet jigging short bass. We put the lines out and right away we were into the action. Only we had big bluefish slamming out spoons and tubes. We trolled north up to Seaside Park to find the same action. Tons of boats jigging the short bass. We decided to stick with trolling hoping for a larger sized bass. There was no such luck. The bluefish would not stay off our lines. Better luck next time.

Bait or Lure: Poppers, Fin-S
Water Depth: 12-45"

Information : Friday was cold, found tons of small bass under birds just south of VZ Bridge. Ran down to Hook and south along beach, stopping here and there to pick up shorts, breaking under birds, on poppers. Ran back up to bridge for a few more rats, quit by 3:30. Saturday was much nicer, cold to start, but when we passed under the bridge, it was like summer, calm, sunny and warm. Same fish, tons of shorts under birds, but they wouldn't eat our poppers. Finally discovered they wanted Fin-S, got about 2 dozen up to 26". Great fun for my boys. Saw a 22 lb bass at the ramp, fellow said he got it on a bucktail close to the ferry docks on Manhattan. Maybe next week.

Bait or Lure: UMBRELLA/AVA JIG
Water Depth: 25 TO 35
Water Temp.: ?
Information : RAY, DON AND HIS SON AND I HIT THE WATERS OFF IBSP AT A LITTLE BEFORE EIGHT IN THE MORNING. MUCH TO MY SURPRISE THERE WERE A LOT OF BOATS ALREADY CHASING FLOCKS OF BIRDS AND THROWING METAL.WE SAW LITTLE LANDINGS AND THIS PROMPTED US TO DECIDE TO TROLL UMBRELLA RIGS. THE RIG WASNT IN THE WATER A MINUTE AND WE WERE HOOKED UP WITH A BASS, HE WAS ONLY 25" BUT A WELCOME SIGHT. WE SPENT MOST OF THE TIME TROLLING BUT ON OCASSION WE STOPPED AND JIGGED WITH QUITE A BIT OF SUCCESS. AT ONE TIME KEVIN A MERE LAD OF "ELEVEN" LANDED A TRIPLE HEADER, TWO BLUES AND A STRIPER ON THE SAME UMBRELLA, WHAT A SHOW! WE WOUND UP WITH THIRTEEN NICE BLUES TO EIGHT POUNDS AND A 30" STRIPER, ONE OF PROBABLY 12 LANDED, THE REST WERE THROWBACKS. WE LEFT THE AREA AT AROUND ONE O'CLOCK AND HAD A GOOD DAY OF FISHING! THERE WAS BAIT FISH ALL OVER AND ONE OF THE BLUES HAD SEVEN SMALL FIVE TO SIX INCH BUNKERS IN HIS STOMACH,A SAND EEL AND A RAIN FISH. WE ALSO LANDED LARGE HERRING WITH A BLUE ON THE SAME UMBRELLA. Bait or Lure: Avia Jig, Rebel, Popper
Water Depth: 40 ft
Water Temp.:
Information : Another great fishing trip. Three of us exited the inlet at 0700 and were going to head North to Ortley Beach when a flock of birds showed 3/4 miles off the inlet. By 0830, we had 4 keeper bass (all 31 -34 inches) and some bluefish for smoking. Threw back about 12 shorts and alot of blues. Constant action. The fish were not necessarily with the birds and we were getting them deep as well as on the surface. The hot hooks were sons Tom and Sean. All three types of lures worked well. The weather started to turn nasty so we stuck around catching some more throwbacks and were back at the dock by 1030. During the morning, the fish would run South fast and then turn up again off the inlet. Fishing died off for about an hour during the change in tide and then picked up as strong as ever. We left enough for everyone else, so go have some fun!

Continued out however troll and chunk did not prove promising and the crew decided it would be more fun to go back for Stripers. So made fast trip back to the Shrewsbury Rocks..from there worked our way north to the Range Bouys stopping where ever birds were seen forming...the result was that the last two hours of the trip were spent bringing in Bass, singles doubles triples on light lines with umbrellas mostly short, some barely keepers..with three or four fish on at any given time lost count of how many went back. Crew had a ball.

Ended up the day with 4 keeper bass (largest one was 39+inches/32 pounds -- Why didn't I enter the Forked river Tuna Club Bass Torney this weekend?), and a load of bluefish. During the day, me and my son and his friend boated and released approximately 30 bass(24-27 inches) and untold blues. By the end of the day I had 1 4 pound blackfish ( the only other blackfish I caught was too small ),a dozen plump sea bass & 2 porgies.

Birds soon got on the bait fish and a nice striper blitz occured for about an hour. I landed at least 20 with some being doubles on the teaser. Soon after birds moved to about 5 casts off the beach. Stayed for a while and by then ten boats at a time came flying around the hook and broke up the whole school.. Came across a school of peanut bunkers and threw my cast net to catch a couple dozen. Live lined them till about 10 without a tap. With 25 guys on the beach by then, saw only 1 skate reeled in. Does anyone know of a web site for the sandy hook and northern areas?? Please e-mail me.

Several inconsiderate fishermen with no regard for fellow anglers frequently made passes too close to the bite which instantly shut it off - use your head. Highlight of the day was a rookie angler, MC, so concerned with eating his soup he lost a big one that hit his unattended rod. Cold conditions did not hamper this magnificent day. Size: 5-7lbs
Bait or Lure: surface popper/ fish
Water Depth: abt 30 ft
Water Temp.: cold
Information : Caught 3 nice sized blues in about an hour then the tide must have changed because then we didn't catch anything else. Found out you do not troll on the top of the water because birds WILL mistake your fake fish lure for a real one. Had to release some sort of ocean bird from the lure. Had the best action about 4 or 5 feet down from the waters surface. Hooked into 4 at that depth, but 2 got away.
