Bad current, Anchors that would not hold, No bites, Etc. Etc. After 2 hours we gave up on the Blackfish and ran 10 miles north and found the Stripers. We were at the top of the tide so the only bites we initially got were "Alligator" Blues. 18 of them to be exact. When the water started to move we did well with the Stripers landing 7 keepers up to 34" and releasing another 30+ fish. The charter did not keep any Slot fish. Trolling the Romer Shoal area we quickly put 3 keeper Bass in the boat. The largest a 35"fish. At noon the area around the Shoal came alive and we put a limit catch of 12 Stripers up to 39" in the boat while releasing another 16 fish. We left the Bass biting when we started for home at 2PM. Boat Name: Miss Shelly
Date Fished: 11/14/02
Location: Sandy Hook / Raritan Bays
Fishing Method: Casting
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 23 - 36 inches
Bait or Lure: Jigs & Spoons
Water Depth: 25 - 45 feet
Water Temp.: 54 - 56
Information : Fished with Al Romanelli aboard his Miss Shelly from 6:30 am to 1:30 pm. At sunrise we found birds over fish on the west side of the mouth of the Shrewsbury. However, the fish were pinning bait in less than 3 feet of water, so we really couldn't get the boat where we could cast to them without fear of getting grounded. We opted to leave them and look out towards the hook and down the beach for others.
When we arrived at the tip of the hook, we immediately saw several fishing boats heading North along the beaches (probably from Manasquan.) Obviously, this meant that they weren't finding much down the beach, so we headed over to The Veranzanno & around Hoffman & Swinburne Islands. Not finding anything there, we ran along the Staten Island shoreline back towards Raritan Reach.
Eventually, after logging 15 or so miles without wetting a line, we found birds over fish near buoys 16 & 18 in the Reach. However, they were not bass, they were huge schools of 3 - 8 lb. bluefish. (What the @#$* are they still doing here in mid-November?)
The blues were so thick that it was impossible to catch bass because the blues were gobbling up anything that fell in the water.
We managed to catch countless numbers of blues on metal spoons, jigs and flies. At times the bird play was fairly heavy, at least until the number of inconsiderate boaters trolling through the schools and other knuckleheads running their outboards full throttle into the middle of the birds to try to be the "first ones in" succeeded (like they always do) in scattering the big schools into smaller pods of fish all across the bay.
We decided to move away from the fray and we concentrated on smaller pods of birds without as much company. This move paid off, as Al soon caught a nice bass on a spoon that was about 34 inches and probably close to 15 lbs. I then caught one that was 36 inches and probably between 16 - 18 lbs.
Later in the day, Al added another pair of bass to the tally. One was another large bass at 33 inches and probably 12 - 13 lbs, and the other was really skinny 23 incher that he mistook for a small blue until he got it to the boat.
My "unusual catch of the day" was a gannet that dove under water at least 10 feet and grabbed my spoon. the bugger managed to get hooked right in the end of his bill. I can assure you that I was not too fond about trying to remove a treble hook from that sword of a beak that he was whipping around at the side of the boat. Luckily, I managed to release the bird quickly. He was scared, but unharmed. However, he must not have been scared enough, because about 5 minutes later, the exact same bird tried to dive down to catch Al's spoon. (Too bad the bass aren't as dumb as the gannets!)
The weather was nice and the seas were flat, but it was still tough fishing! I would have never guessed that on Nov. 15th, we would still be catching small bluefish in droves. I also would have never guessed that Al and I would be working our butts off for 7 hours in order to catch 4 bass.
In years past, we would expect to catch at least a dozen each on a typical day of fall bassin' in about half as much time.
The marinas around Sandy Hook Bay and the Shrewsbury River are still full of peanut bunker, so I suspect that the real big push of bass may still come into the Sandy Hook Bay area in the next few weeks. I just hope that that the bass action heats up before it is too late to save the fall season of 2002. I know that a lot of fishermen are bummed that they have already pulled and winterized their boats before the bass ever showed up.

Sandy Hook area was almost lifeless as we did not even read much let alone catch. However, a move down the beach to the Shrewsbury Rocks found birds working on the beach and we manged to save the day with 5 Stripers and 20 Bluefish. Something is very wrong here as usually this time of year we are averaging 50+ Bass a trip. Hopefully this Northeaster they are predicting for the weekend stirs something up.

far... Still waiting for a calm day !

Information : Captain Phil Dulanie had the second group from the Pat Ryan charter out on Friday on the Canyon Runner and once again found the bass off of Sandy Hook between the channels. However the bite was not as good today as we only had 14 Bass with only 3 over 28inches. Like Thursday the wind made for tough conditions, particularly the ride home as it blew south about 30 on the way home. Also like Thursday green/black tubes produced best and the catch included 10 bluefish. The highlight of the trip was a fat 38inch 25 pound Striper.

Water Depth: 500
Water Temp.: 67-68
Information : Finally getting a decent weather forecast we ran out to the West Wall
Sunday morning 11/3, for an over nighter. The ride out was rough in a 4-8 following
sea. We went 3 for 7 on the tuna and released 3 swordfish in the 20-60 lb range plus
a couple of Mahi. All tuna were lost with in site due to angler error on light
leaders. We fished both the West Wall and East Wall with about the same results. We
could have done better if the squid would have let us get some baits down. Water is
still very warm considering the time of year. Should be able to get in a couple more
trips. The Bluefin should be coming down real soon.
Angler Name : Joe Kay
E-Mail : njcharter@aol.com
Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: Nov. 4-5
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Day Chunk
Specie: Albacore Tuna
Size: 50-60
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 69
Information : O.K. we just couldn't help it we had to get one more in. With a great
weather forecast, a striper trip that was cancelled by the charter the week before
and a charter begging to get them offshore and had already paid in full the canyon
was once again beckoning us. Captain Phil Dulanie put the Joe Kay charter from
Flemington on the Canyon Runner Sunday night and headed offshore for a day chunk.
The ride out was smooth as glass and so was the the conditions on the edge. The
party boat boys got into some fish in the dark and some went home early some after we
showed up. We guess the tuna feed hard at night as we read them thick all day.
While we caught we did not catch the equivalent to what we read on the machine. We
did finish off with 7 big longfin and a bunch of (believe it or not) November
Mahi-Mahi from 10-15 pounds.
So once again - After a tough tough year with weather (63 Canyon Trips Cancelled) we
were still able to put 85 days in on the edge (5 one day trolls and 40 2-day
overnighters) and 515 tuna in the boat, releasing 3 big Blue Marlin and over 20 White
Marlin and can happily say, "Bring on the Stripers, the Tuna can wait until June.
We're Done!!!"
And we mean it this time as we took all the offshore equipment off the boat just in
case we head out the inlet and forget to turn the boat up the beach. I think our
boat knows the way to the canyon well enough herself that she would take us there
even without the autopilot on.

catch and reports of party boats bailing fish on the west wall, we anchored on the
same spot that yielded fish on the previous trip. After 12 hours and no tuna bites
we moved to the east wall and began drifting. On the third drift and 10 minutes
before our scheduled
departure the charter hooked a large tuna that eventually broke the 60lb leader. We
decided to stay an extra hour and the charter
boated a longfin and two yuellowfins that were in the slick. The recorder showed fish
stacked up from 100 to 200ft but they would not come up.
We left at 12 noon with 3 tuna on ice and very glad we delayed our departure.

Rooster,Capt Rod- hid out of the wind in the comfey parker 2520 cabin.Rooster bailed
for the Saturday repeat but Gary & I did it again...very slow until 1:30 am then the
bite turned on
non stop bass and blues until 4:am..all small fish but very good action....the tide
was the end of the out going and most of the fish on the top of the incoming...it
seems that the lack of bait in the bay

immpossible. The wind was blowing from the NW @25-35mph. It was like being inside a

wich produced 5 bass and 3 large chopper blues. All but two blues were caught on the
"rig". Bunker spoons produced two blues and that was it. This is the first time we've
ever used the Chandelier Rig and the rusults were excellent in very tough
