Informed of a good bite yesterday on Romer Shoals we headed up there after looking over a few spots to the south. We picked away from 10am to 2pm and ended with 15 Bass including several between 30-33". Yellow shads rigs produced best.

Water Depth: 25
Water Temp.: 53
Information : Had one of our tougher days this fall for the Brian Honan party. Started out trolling bass around SH, boating one nice 34" fish and losing another. Then the bite died as the tide went slack, and the guys wanted to switch to tog. Hit a couple of spots but the tide was running very hard, and the bites were quick and the guys had trouble connecting. Put 12 keepers in the boat, plus 6 shorts before packing it in.

Water Depth: Approx 65'

Information : In attempt to be prepared, yet not overly prepared, we stopped for eels in the morning, but only got 6. After approximately a 1 1/2 search of the bay for working birds, we set up off of Coney Island and drifted for a bit while jigging. Nothing happened, so we set off for the channel and a small fleet of boats working that area. Set up with what eels we had, Al lost two, to what appeared to be bluefish. Approximately 1/2 hour after that, I took a 31" bass on eel. Lots of action in the area, wish we had bought bait. That'll learn us!!!

Boat Name: Miss Shelly
Date Fished: 11/14/02
Location: Sandy Hook / Raritan Bays
Fishing Method: Casting
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 23 - 36 inches
Bait or Lure: Jigs & Spoons
Water Depth: 25 - 45 feet
Water Temp.: 54 - 56
Information : Fished with Al Romanelli aboard his Miss Shelly from 6:30 am to 1:30 pm. At sunrise we found birds over fish on the west side of the mouth of the Shrewsbury. However, the fish were pinning bait in less than 3 feet of water, so we really couldn't get the boat where we could cast to them without fear of getting grounded. We opted to leave them and look out towards the hook and down the beach for others. When we arrived at the tip of the hook, we immediately saw several fishing boats heading North along the beaches (probably from Manasquan.) Obviously, this meant that they weren't finding much down the beach, so we headed over to The Veranzanno & around Hoffman & Swinburne Islands. Not finding anything there, we ran along the Staten Island shoreline back towards Raritan Reach. Eventually, after logging 15 or so miles without wetting a line, we found birds over fish near buoys 16 & 18 in the Reach. However, they were not bass, they were huge schools of 3 - 8 lb. bluefish. (What the @#$* are they still doing here in mid-November?) The blues were so thick that it was impossible to catch bass because the blues were gobbling up anything that fell in the water. We managed to catch countless numbers of blues on metal spoons, jigs and flies. At times the bird play was fairly heavy, at least until the number of inconsiderate boaters trolling through the schools and other knuckleheads running their outboards full throttle into the middle of the birds to try to be the "first ones in" succeeded (like they always do) in scattering the big schools into smaller pods of fish all across the bay. We decided to move away from the fray and we concentrated on smaller pods of birds without as much company. This move paid off, as Al soon caught a nice bass on a spoon that was about 34 inches and probably close to 15 lbs. I then caught one that was 36 inches and probably between 16 - 18 lbs. Later in the day, Al added another pair of bass to the tally. One was another large bass at 33 inches and probably 12 - 13 lbs, and the other was really skinny 23 incher that he mistook for a small blue until he got it to the boat. My "unusual catch of the day" was a gannet that dove under water at least 10 feet and grabbed my spoon. the bugger managed to get hooked right in the end of his bill. I can assure you that I was not too fond about trying to remove a treble hook from that sword of a beak that he was whipping around at the side of the boat. Luckily, I managed to release the bird quickly. He was scared, but unharmed. However, he must not have been scared enough, because about 5 minutes later, the exact same bird tried to dive down to catch Al's spoon. (Too bad the bass aren't as dumb as the gannets!) The weather was nice and the seas were flat, but it was still tough fishing! I would have never guessed that on Nov. 15th, we would still be catching small bluefish in droves. I also would have never guessed that Al and I would be working our butts off for 7 hours in order to catch 4 bass. In years past, we would expect to catch at least a dozen each on a typical day of fall bassin' in about half as much time. The marinas around Sandy Hook Bay and the Shrewsbury River are still full of peanut bunker, so I suspect that the real big push of bass may still come into the Sandy Hook Bay area in the next few weeks. I just hope that that the bass action heats up before it is too late to save the fall season of 2002. I know that a lot of fishermen are bummed that they have already pulled and winterized their boats before the bass ever showed up.

Location: Inshore Wrecks
Fishing Method: Bottom Fishing
Specie: Blackfish
Size: Up to 5 Lbs.
Bait or Lure: Green Crabs & Clams
Water Depth: 70 Ft.
Water Temp.: 55 Degrees
Information : Capt. Paul had the Frank Lukenda charter on board the Bounty Hunter and fished 3 spots 7 miles off Manasquan. A stiff 25 Knot south wind made for difficult conditios. The 55 degree water temps are still holding a good number of Porgies and quite a few Seabass. After fighting off 6 Ft. seas and the Porgies we ended up the day with a dozen keeper Blackfish and 25 large Seabass. Green Crabs and Clams were the baits of choice.

Location: South
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 28"
Bait or Lure: Umbrella Rigs
Water Depth: 25
Water Temp.: 55
Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie braved the tough weather on Sunday and got the trip in for the Pete Minoti charter however with a screeming South wind we were not going to head all the way up to the Hook today and stuck it out just south of Manasquan. Trolling open bottom in 40 feet of water found only 1 Striper but Bluefish filled in some of the voids. However, this was not one of those trips to write home about. On the otherhand we enjoyed the company of another of our many longtime customers that are just great to fish with.

Fishing Method: Troll
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: Short (released)
Bait or Lure: Umbrellas
Water Depth: 15'-40'
Water Temp.: 48
Information : Trolled from 6:30am till noon one short and no other nockdowns. Marked one or two fish on my sonar. Wed was same story didn't mark a fish all day. To date I've kept two fish and caught twenty this year. I fish every week twice a week, and i don't see the amount of fish that I saw last year. This year I troll and I don't even read fish let alone catch them Last fall I caught 193 stripers kept 40, and let the rest go. By this time last year acording to my records I had caught over a 100. I hate to be the one to point this out but I think the population has peaked, and now where on the downside. Well time will tell, but don't wait for the NMFS to fix the problem. As it is they don't protect the bunker. Last spring the bunker didn't even get to spawn before the purse seiners scooped them up. By the way this year there will be more purse seiners now that the crabers(commercial)in Chesapeak Bay had devastated the horseshoecrab population and can no longer use them for bait. So the crabers will be looking to take more bunker.

Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 65.5
Information : Great trip, my second of the season this year and it was well worth it. The captain likes to run a tight boat and he does. You pay a little extra compared to other boats but he max's out at 18. Prevents tangles and allows more guys to get their fish in the Boat. Leaving Saturday at 6:00 from Squan we anchored up at 2:00, by 2:30 there was action and it only got better till daylight. At daylight it cut, I tried using light test florocarbon and got a run off, but it felf like the hook ripped out. I was able to boat 5 Longfin and 1 Yellowfin, no complaints. The boat had 61 total and I beleive we were doing better than the rest of the boats out there Mates (Dave and Mike) were great as well as the captain who had to help when we were in a hot bite. If you plan on schedualing a trip with him , get your money in quick and reserve a spot. Cleanest boat I've ever fished and they have amazing fish capacity with two in deck fish holds. Hopefully next time the weather will be just as warm as it was this weekend and the bite twice as hot and going into they day. Even though the season has been a bust with few YF and too much weather, I still hope to get out at least one more time. Shout Out to Gilliagn...next time my friend, next time

Bait or Lure: BUTTERS
Water Depth: 500
Water Temp.: 67-68
Information : Finally getting a decent weather forecast we ran out to the West Wall Sunday morning 11/3, for an over nighter. The ride out was rough in a 4-8 following sea. We went 3 for 7 on the tuna and released 3 swordfish in the 20-60 lb range plus a couple of Mahi. All tuna were lost with in site due to angler error on light leaders. We fished both the West Wall and East Wall with about the same results. We could have done better if the squid would have let us get some baits down. Water is still very warm considering the time of year. Should be able to get in a couple more trips. The Bluefin should be coming down real soon.

Angler Name : Joe Kay

Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Day Chunk
Specie: Albacore Tuna
Size: 50-60
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 69
Information : O.K. we just couldn't help it we had to get one more in. With a great weather forecast, a striper trip that was cancelled by the charter the week before and a charter begging to get them offshore and had already paid in full the canyon was once again beckoning us. Captain Phil Dulanie put the Joe Kay charter from Flemington on the Canyon Runner Sunday night and headed offshore for a day chunk. The ride out was smooth as glass and so was the the conditions on the edge. The party boat boys got into some fish in the dark and some went home early some after we showed up. We guess the tuna feed hard at night as we read them thick all day. While we caught we did not catch the equivalent to what we read on the machine. We did finish off with 7 big longfin and a bunch of (believe it or not) November Mahi-Mahi from 10-15 pounds. So once again - After a tough tough year with weather (63 Canyon Trips Cancelled) we were still able to put 85 days in on the edge (5 one day trolls and 40 2-day overnighters) and 515 tuna in the boat, releasing 3 big Blue Marlin and over 20 White Marlin and can happily say, "Bring on the Stripers, the Tuna can wait until June. We're Done!!!" And we mean it this time as we took all the offshore equipment off the boat just in case we head out the inlet and forget to turn the boat up the beach. I think our boat knows the way to the canyon well enough herself that she would take us there even without the autopilot on.

We NEVER come home skunked, these guys put me on fish when the rest of fleet can barely scare up a few here and there. Today was no exception. Information : Capt Bernie Roth had Ernie Kusterer and his son Mark on board for a Sun/Mon overnighter in the Hudson Canyon. Filled with optimism after last weeks impressive catch and reports of party boats bailing fish on the west wall, we anchored on the same spot that yielded fish on the previous trip. After 12 hours and no tuna bites we moved to the east wall and began drifting. On the third drift and 10 minutes before our scheduled departure the charter hooked a large tuna that eventually broke the 60lb leader. We decided to stay an extra hour and the charter boated a longfin and two yuellowfins that were in the slick. The recorder showed fish stacked up from 100 to 200ft but they would not come up. We left at 12 noon with 3 tuna on ice and very glad we delayed our departure.

I won't try SH Reef again on the weekend, slow bite and small fish, gotta be too much pressure.

In addition, we had a bunch of Scup we released and a couple dozen Sea Bass for the frying pan.

Fishing Method:
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: YFT 75#/LFT 60
Bait or Lure: Chunk and Jigs
Water Depth: 60-230 ft
Water Temp.: los 60's
Information : Fished a private charter on the Atlantis knowing it was going to be really rough. Had a follow up sea out which wasn't to bad but it was the anchoring that did everybody in. It was so rough that it took like 2 hours to anchor up. Got the first LFT at around 4:30. It was sleeting/Snowing with 25 kt winds all night only to get rougher as the daylight came. The bite was after daylight. I'm sure that we would've had more fish in the boat but 1/2 of the folks were too sick to fish. One fish that we did not boat was very large as this fish could not be turned even when holding and thumbing the line. Total for the boat was 8 LFT and 2 YFT. Captain and the mates were top notch.

Must have seen at least 2 dozen treble hooks get bit off, hopefully at least some of those fish will survive.
