Boat Name: Brother's Boat
Date Fished: 5/30/99
Location: Poorman's Canyon
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 30 - 35 lbs
Bait or Lure: Green machines
Water Depth: 150 fathoms
Water Temp.: 65 - 69.5 Degrees
Information : My brother and I made a run on Sunday out of Cape May to test the offshore waters for an early run of tuna. To our surprise, we found what we were looking for. The water was so full of life and had such a high quality look that only an offshore fisherman could appreciate. We started the day with a double on small big eye tuna trolling through a temp break that went from 57 to 66 degrees in approximately 2 miles within the first 15 minutes. Working the break between 63 and 66 degrees, we then caught a 12 lb female mahi with a nice gaffer bull throwing the hook. Working this same area, we then doubled up on Yellowfin to our amazement. Between another 5 big eyes we had a second double on yellowfins. While the two of us were each fighting the yellowfins, a white marlin crashed the port flatline but swung and missed! All toll, we had 7 bigeyes, 4 yellowfin and 1 Mahi with 5 tuna releases. As mentioned, life was everywhere, we witnessed porpoises balling and crashing squid, severall pods of whales, three sunfish as well as flying fish. On the long journey home, we encountered a 15 foot Mako and a 400 - 500 lb thresher shark at the 30 fathom line but they weren't interested in our baits. To top the day, the ocean glassed over for the entire 79 mile trip home allowing us to see too many sharks to count between the 30 and 20 fathom lines as well as other sea creatures. This will be a tough one to duplicate but it sure looks encouraging for an excellent offshore season. Tight lines.

Location: Sandy Hook
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: up to 38"
Bait or Lure: Umbrella Rigs
Water Depth: 40'
Water Temp.: 60
Information : The Canyon Runner was back out again for Stripers and Captain Phil Dulanie put the Alan Funk charter from Livingston, NJ into Striped Bass action as soon as the lines hit the water. Fishing north of the Shrewsbury Rocks we boated 9 Stripers between 27" and 38", releasing 3 shorts and keeping the rest for the dinner table. The action was all on umbrella rigs and included a couple dozen bluefish. As the tide slacked off and the action died down we spotted birds working offshore and trolling and jigging under them produce constant action for the last hour of the trip as we couple barely get the lines in the water before we were hooked-up.

We had a triple header on once and lots of double headers. Spearing was hot on the sea robins but some took bunker strips. Squid and Fluke belly were used as strip baits.

Bait or Lure: frozen herring
Water Depth: 21'

I had three rigs out, none were in a pole holder. All of a sudden I got a strike on one of the poles. It hit really hard and the pole went flying through the air. I lunged towards it as it was passing over my engine and grabbed it in midair. Unfortunately, that time the fish got away but the next time, I was ready and that one wasn't so lucky. I had 5 or 6 similar strikes within 1/2 hour and by that time it was out of bullets so I went home

Information : Maiden voyage for the new power head. Did not need to use the Phrase "Sea Tow, Sea Tow, Sea Tow" That is always a plus. First drop must have hit the 20 " on the head. It slowed down after that. I got one more keeper and Chris finally got a nice one after a medley of shorts, star fish, sea robins and crabs with a snail thrown in. She is using much better equipment this year and big things are expected of her for the rest of the season. It was nice to be back out on the water in my own boat again. Location: Cape May, NJ
Fishing Method: Bottom
Specie: Fluke
Size: no size
Bait or Lure: bait
Water Depth: 40
Water Temp.: 60
Information : Well the gang from the Lil Guy decided to go out on a party boat this week. We were a camping down in good ol' Cape May and looked up Captain Bob and the Sea Hunt out of the Miss Chris Dock. Figured we would take a leasurely 6 hour trip and catch some dinner. Water was a dead calm, about a 5 mile an hour wind. Capt. Bob informed us that the Fluke hot spot would be later in the trip as he felt we would have any drift til tide turned. He headed out where the Marlin play(bout 9 miles out best as we could figure). We drifted slowly along with a fleet, in search of the devious seabass. Our group managed 4 keeper bass and 2 throwbacks. pretty dead and too many boats to manuver, so Capt. Bob headed for the "hotspot". He ran about 80 mintues out to get to this spot then starts back in, 15 minutes go by and boom back to neutral, "Boys we ran over a school, lets check em out." Notta, must have scattered, but school or not they weren't fluke. Back on course to the "Hot Spot". Another 20 minutes and we were there. First drift produced about 22 throw backs on the boat and 2 keepers. remaining 3 drifts for the day produced even less. Our group of 6 ended the day with 3 keeper fluke, 12 throw backs and 4 seabass. Our 1st mate Chris won the pool with a monster Fluke, that went a good 17 inches. I had suggested to Capt. Bob that he may want to try drifting the inlet next trip out. You can at least get the boat to move when you drift an inlet. I don't think capt. Bob likes me anymore. Oh well. Good luck to all and tight lines til next time.

Once the tide slacked off we headed south to fish some off our favorite Sea Bass wrecks and quickly boated a couple dozen Sea Bass to add to the catch.

Boat Name: Carcharodon
Date Fished: 5/28-29
Location: Hudson Canyon/Texas Tower
Fishing Method: Tuna Troll/Shark Chum
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size:
Bait or Lure:
Water Depth: Are you kidding?
Water Temp.: 57-61
Information : Along with Bob Sr. and Bob Wald, I had a great group of guys from Woodbridge out for a Hudson Canyon trip. Kenny Gallop, Danny Edmonds, his brother Brian Mcabe & cousin Mark Kot are all experienced canyon fisherman. Since we knew there wasn't much in the way of warm water, we brought mackerel and chum along to set up for sharking. Leaving the dock @ 11:30 pm, we had a beautiful moonlit ride out to the Hudson, arriving at the West Wall @ 4:10. We trolled our hearts out to no avail, not marking any bait holding from the 50-100 fathom lines on either side, and set up for fruitless sharking near the Texas Tower. Best fishing opportunity came for jigging pollock on the 'Tower (oh well, better than nothing). We did see quite a few Bluefin Tuna break water, and even more "pushing", so the Giants are still coming through. Porpoises were abundant, and we had two Mahi dart from under the boat after engorging on our chum. If we get any warm water mass hanging around for 3-4 days, it might hold enough bait to keep the bigger Bluefins in the area. There was Bluefins hooked and Yellowfins caught at the Wilmington, so things are looking up!

There were definitely plenty of fish in the area because you could see them right inside the lights schooling on the surface but they just weren't eating. The fishing are just about to spawn and I'm sure this is the reason they're being quite finnicky. In all we caught about 30 bluefish to ten pounds.

Moved 100 yards to where the birds were, switched to a sinking 3" yozuri, and picked up a 30" bass. Had my ten blues by 11:15AM. Water Depth: 14-24 Feet
Water Temp.: 58.4
Information : Anthony,Casey and I left the dock @5:30 AM with high hopes-thes were qucikly put in check when when reached the rips and found a wind against tide situation. We tried to fish, but without a drift to move the baits there was no action.Next we decided to troll bunker atop the Knoll until the tide turned-here again we went fisheless.Once the tide started to run out-we went back to the rips. Anthony was the hot man has he put 2 schoolie bass in the boat in addition to a short fluke-I in the meanwhile managed a 15 inch bass and a few sea robins-while Casey could only scratch out 1 sea robin. Our next plan of attack was to anchor along the edge of the Swash Channel. Here again Anthony was the hot man-unfortunately he missed his first 13 run-offs in a row.I added another schoolie bass to our total, but the action was slow.Once the tide really started to crank, the action picked up and in short order we each had a keeper bass in the box.Bluefish in the 3-5 pound class spiced up the action.Casey & Anthony each added another keeper bass while I got another 2 just shorts. On the last piece of bait aboard I hooked with a a good fish-which turned out to be a 11.5 pound bluefish----

Information : Despite a very brisk SW wind that produced white caps on the bay-ray and I made it to the tip of the hook. We got tired of being bounced around and decided to drift for some more fluke in the back of Sandy Hook Bay-this was unproductive.Next stop was the Oceanic Bridge in the Navesink River-ray got both a keeper & short fluke, while I lost a fish on a Fin-S jig. We picked up Bob at the dock at 4:30 and headed for the Knoll with hopes of chunking up some stripers.Just west of the Bug Light we came across pods of diving birds-quickly tying on AVA 017s we were back into bluefish again for the next hour-We released most, but saved some for the table Had numerous double & triple headers.Did try and chunk but a wind against tide situation made for poor conditions so we headed home.

Information : What a great day on Saturday! Calm seas made it quite easy to pick a cooler full of sea bass & blackfish. Heard from my buddies that the good fluke action is still at the 'Hook, but since we didn't want to run that far, we started at the Shrewsbury Rocks with squid & killies. Finding a killer bite with seabass, we switched to salted fresh clams (nice n'tough) and pulled too many bass to count, returning those under 14". We moved to 17 fathoms into bluefish bite that didn't seem worth it, dropped baits and still killed the seabass in deeper water, even with a steady bergal nuisance. Oh well, bergal strips make great bait, no? Try 'em if you haven't, everything eats them. By the way, those of you calling about the warm water at the Hudson . . . it doesn't look "that good". Sit tight and wait a bit for Canyon runs unless you want to pull Blue sharks all day! I was thinking about running out to the Texas Tower and Triple Wrecks this weekend if the water clears up, so I'll update you guys next week if so.

Size: 18 to 24 inches
Bait or Lure: Chicken!
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Well once again the team of Bill, Chris, and Keith hit the salt. Bay was a flat calm, could have done a hundred miles an hour if Lil Guy had it in it. We ran out near Mia maul and tried a dropoff I knew off.... Notta, ran to the light where all the party boats were drifting on top of each other... Notta. Went back to the faithful spot out front of Fortesque... BINGO! Weakfish, nice steady pick of 18 to 24" trout. Slowed down around lunchtime. Went exploring Found a nice drift further north. Produced several flounders, we managed 4 keepers, about 15 throwbacks. I was drifting eels, but the stripers wouldn't take the whole bait, kept biting them in half. Had 1 sad note saw a 24" linesider float by the boat evidently had been gut hooked by someone, struggling on the surface. I considered netting it, but the fine isn't worth the fish... Just a pity to see that go to waste. Total for the day..... 21 weakfish, 4 fluke and 4 Blues. Once again the Lil Guy finds the fish. Tight lines to all, and is anyone giving out netting lessons, cause second mate Keith is in need of a teacher.........

Tim "The Rookie" Davis, my fishing companion and co-worker, nailed two four pounders in the middle of "the old guys." The College Kids are back and we're fishing again. Got up the next morning and jumped on the Miss Avalon II for a six hour wreck trip and after I whaled a nice mess of hunch-head sea bass up to three pounds I nailed a sweet five pound tog and snapped my graphite Fenwick triggerstick trying to pull Mr. Slippery out of his home in a pile of old net and rope ... Hope this does not happen again this year. A thousand fishermen should have priority over a few nesting birds.

Hit the same holes as yesterday and were blessed by King Neptune with just about the same length as yesterday but twice as fat, 10 Fluke, 8 Keepers, Tom got the 23" but I had high hook (Nice Fillets). When we got back to the dock everyone of his neighbors were impressed with the sizes as we lined them up on the dock for a picture. At this rate we might end up with a 10lb'er yet, very early yet for this size fish that I'm used to. Hoping for good weather next weekend. Good Luck Everybody!

Fishing Method: Wreck Fishing
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: up to 3 pounds
Bait or Lure: Clams/Squid
Water Depth: 80'
Water Temp.: 55
Information : Captain Phil Dulane had the Canyon Runner out again for the fourth day in a row and put the Joe McClary charter from Chester, PA into Sea Bass and Blackfish. Unfortunately, the Northeast/East winds which seem to have been blowing for a month built the seas to 8-10 foot swells which are begining to hurt the bottom fishing. Fishing the same wrecks where we boated over 200 the week before we only managed 50+ for the day. However we did get a couple nice size Sea Bass to 3+ pounds and Blackfish to 8 pounds. In addition, for the second day in a row we boated another Striper and lost another one at the boat. We have been fishing these wrecks for 20+ years and this is the first year we ever caught Stripers off them, and the Striper today made it the fourth of the year. In case anyone is wondering, we are only fishing 2 - 3 miles from the beach.

Information : Went fishing at the Keansburg fishing pier with my friends George Cruz and Raul V, it was pretty windy and a bit chilly fished from 3:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. it was dead today except for a couple of bluefish some- one caught and i caught a 23 1/2 inch Weakfish about 7lbs on a Mackeral chunck at about 7:45 p.m., but the kicker was that the rod did not belong to me, some guy named Rick left his rods there and went to go to get a bit to eat, no sooner then he left he got a hit on one of his rods and if i did not get it, it was going over the pier, at least i got to fight the fish and land it, but the guy didn't even give me a thank you. well that's the way fishing goes some times, you catch fish even when it is not your tackle. We also saw some birds come in and some Bluefish under them, but they would not hit the lures', i guess it was, because it was too dark, and they could not see them. Hector

Information : Gave the Carcharodon a rest and fished on the "Carolina Lady" out of the Channel Club Marina in Monmouth Beach for opening day of Fluke season. Bob Wald owns the boat, and we had the Ar/Land Realty party out. It was gunnel to gunnel at the Bug Light & Coast Guard Station, drifting from 6' out over the channel inside Sandy Hook. It's amazing how when they set a size limit you catch a whole slew "just under" . . . isn't it? Well, we had a decent catch of fish from 15.5 - 20" with the heaviest being 3 lbs. Considering the time of year, the fish were biting pretty well, but the whole area could be fished out daily with the amount of boats there. Re: Canyon Fishing. I have plenty of choice dates open on the Carcharodon & have been getting calls for Saturday into Sunday canyon trips. Id like to offer this advice: people should think about Thursday into Friday & Friday into Saturday in order to get a days rest & back to work on Monday! Worst case scenario, & if I have good water/current/weather reports, allow for Sunday into Monday trips, too. The key is this: we look to minimize downtime because of tricky weekend weather. We cant always be as lucky as the last couple of years with beautiful, sunny and not-too-windy weekends. Its just good for you folks to be prepared, and keep your options open so we can get you to and from the fish safely.

Information : Atlantis had 3 different species, Bass, Bluefish, and Fluke. I was anchored casting plugs and droppping a worm which produced a short Fluke. I had 2 Bluefish that hit on plugs. Very fun on light tackle. With nothing doing after all of those I decided to drift in hope of a Striper or Weak. Within minutes I had another Fluke and also on the drift I had 1 short Bass. I moved back again and I dropped it down and had some hits but it turned out to be quite a battle for light tackle as I landed a 26" short Bass. I had another schoolie before going home. I had 3 Bass, 2 Blues, and 2 Fluke. I saw other people catch Bluefish.

Water Temp.:
Information : Capt. Stan steamed our boat 1 hour 20 min to the fishing grounds not too far from the shoreline. Bright sunny day. A bit cool. Northwest wind at 15 knots. The first drop on Haggly Shallow Bottom produces 1 keeper and a few short blacks for the light crowd of 12. Saw Freddy C nearby and The Pilot from NY. We moved to another drop not far. After the announcement to "let em go", fish began to pound away all around the boat. This kept up until we pulled anchor. It was a perfect chew. Stan Jr. started cleaning fish before 11am. Most of the fish were close to the size limit. I kept a limit with 4 fish in the 3-4 lb. range and just missed the pool. Threw back 20 or more shorts. The boat had a limit out of about 300 blacks caught. The Elaine B is switching over to fluke Saturday. I asked Capt Stan Jr. if they were going to extend the blackfish season, but he said no. I can only look forward to next season in the fall for more action.

Not a bad start, caught my 23 incher around a half hour later. A real nice fight with light tackle. It slowed up and then we went out to the elbow where a caught 3 short fluke and 2 14inch weakies. Not a bad start for the season. Captain Joe really tried to put us on the fish but they were very picky. Like I said you had to work your lines to entice these fish.

Took little over an hour to get back into the Shrewsbury River. made a few drifts south of the Sea Bright Bridge-first pass produced a 26 inch striper but nothing after.Moved to the Navesink River & fished the northeast corener of the Oceanic Bridge. began by casting an AVA 007 which quickly caught 2 bluefish-switched over to a 1/4 ounce lead head with a 4 inch Fin-S tail ( bubblegum or yellow/green hot colors ).First fish on the leadhead was a 21 inch 3.5 pound weakie. On a whim I deadsticked some sandworms which paid off fast by enticing a 27 inch 6.1 pound weakie to bite. I continued to deadstick sandworms with no more bites, while casting the leadhead and having a blast with bluefish all in the 2-4 pound class. Information : Slight change of plans as I got to Belmar, when we decided to make a run back to Pt. to jump on the Dauntless.. The change paid off! We ran off about 6-10 miles NE to the Sea Girt Reef, and picked away at various wrecks/rocks/broken bottom.. Fishing was picky, but still very good.. 99% of the catch was keeper seabass, with a husky 3+ pound humpback winning the pool, and many others right around the same size.. Only a pair of ling caught, a few bergalls, doggies, pout, and ravens.. Everyone went home with a nice bag of fillets.. My total which was high hook was 2 dozen keeper bass, a short tog, and a hungry 4 lb. blue that decided to munch on a short seabass.. All in all an excellent day.. Can't wait to get the boat in the water next week!!

Location: Delaware Bay, NJ
Fishing Method: Anchored
Specie: Weakfish
Size: assorted
Bait or Lure: Squid
Water Depth: 18 to 26 feet
Water Temp.: mid 50s
Information : Well my crew and I launched out of Fortescue from Higbees Marina. We got out the GPS and headed for that 26 foot dropoff. After setting the Anchor we proceeded to try our luck. An hour of no action passed so we came back in closer to shore..... about 18 foot deep 2 miles off the beach. Couple nibbles, and then action started. Second mate Keith boated 2 wonderful Weakies both big enough that no tape measure was needed. I was doing some chunking to see if a rouge Striper was in our area. Bang... bites started to be more frequent. 2 pound blues found my slick, and Weakies were running with em. bites were tough but we hooked a few.... WHAM! Big fish on my bass rod. 17 pound test screamin of the reel....Faught this monster for 15 minutes, figured it was a big Linesider, to my dismay it was a Slammer blue, running with the small fry. 11.5 pounds at 38 inches, still was a nice experience and would feed us well. My first mate Chris had a tough day, although she only hooked 1 fish, it was a 5 pound weakie which was a pleasant ending to the day. With the party boats crowding us out and the waves getting higher, we decided to call it quits early, ending the day with 6 weakies and 8 blues we did much better than 1 of the party boats who came in early with only 3 fish for the whole boat. After the passing of another week or so, fish should become more active and then its just a matter of being in the right place at the right time....... Or just being on my boat cause we always catch the fish....Tight lines to all.

Information : Started day at 8:00AM. Took a while to hook up with first fish ( blue fish) on squid, got all blues on squid. After a few hours went to clams and within 15 min, hooked up with 32" striper. That was the only one I got for the day but it was worth it. (The fisherman next to me landed 13 fish in the two hours he was there. Most were stripers, only one was keeper size but he released it.) From about 10:30 till noon the fishing was dead so we left. My 5 year old and I had a blast, Except, "Whe I was getting my bite from the striper I started running for the pole and yelling in excitement, it pulled my rod over so I was in a hurry! well my son thought I was yelling at him {he was between two of the poles) when he seen me coming and yelling he dashed in front of me and got run over." he was OK and after words we had a good laugh, but at first I was a bit woried "I am 240lbs, and he was not moving much at first" (Just knocked the wind out of him) we look forward to next weekend. Fishing Method: Bait
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 12" to 40"
Bait or Lure: sand and blood worms herring
Water Depth: 11' to 22'
Water Temp.: 55.2
Information : National Fishing Association started it's 5th year of tagging striped bass on the Hudson River. Using ALS taggs for Fish and wildlife also reporting to NY DEC with their effort survey, NFA has set up operations in Kingston, NY. We are berthed at the Round Out Creek Yatch Basin. Sat. May 1 was our first trip. Charlie Mormile and his friend Bernie were our 1st Volunteers to fish this year. We tagged 15 bass from 12 to 27 inches using blood and sand worms. We had one fish to 40 inches and 35 pounds a female, which was released. Total for Sat was 31 bass. Phil Kozak, President of NFA guided these anglers north of round out creek to the Rinecliff bridge. They fished from 8:30AM to 4:30PM. Most prductive time was the out going tide due to the wind and tide in the same direction. Sunday Phil fished with his daughter, son-in law and two grand daughters ages 7 and 8. They caught and released 13 bass to 28 inches with 5 bass being tagged. NFA does not target large spawning bass because to the stress caused by the fight. These fish are released as quickly as possible. Smaller fish are much hardier and can take the time it takes to tag. The next trip will be Sat.May 8 and then NFA will fish every for the next 9 days. Look for the NFA updates. If you can bring your own boat the fishing is terrific.

Information : Well I know I wasn`t supposed to go fishing this weekend, but, my wife said if I really want to go...Need I say more...Hit the beach and fished for 4-5 hrs and landed 9 shorts. Here comes the fish story.Definately had a keeper on. I saw the fish in the surf, when all of a sudden a seagull decided he was going to start diving at my fish.He obviously must have been feeding on what the fish was throwing up, trying to throw the hook. After about the 3rd or 4th dive, he got tangled in my line and it broke off.Sounds stupid, but true. Can`t keep a tight line that way.Going for herring on monday again.Time to start making some chum.Untill next time, keep a tight line.
