Fishing Method: Trolling & Drifting
Specie: Fluke
Size: 15" to 17"
Bait or Lure: Squid & Killie Combo
Water Depth: 6' to 40'
Water Temp.: ?
Information : Got to the Ammo Pier at about 9:30AM, and was surprised to see the aircraft carrier. Decided to try wire-line trolling for the first time, using umbrella rigs, along the Raritan Reach. Hooked a 22" striped bass. Continued west and the FOG rolled in. I could see the sun, but no further than a couple of hundred yards, on the water. Headed towards the Hook. Got out of the fog at the Ammo Pier. Continued trolling along the Terminal Channel and caught a 17" fluke on an umbrella rig!!! No, it wasn't foul hooked. Started drifting at Flynn's Knoll, and the bug light, but the wind picked up. Sought a wind-break at the tip of the Hook, and then between buoys 2 and 4. Caught fluke at the last two locations, along with Sea Robins, at the former. Came home with six 17 inchers, and threw back the rest. Tight lines.

Boat Name: Susie-G III
Date Fished: 5/30/98
Location: Ocean
Fishing Method: Drifting
Specie: Fluke
Size: 12-15"
Bait or Lure: killies/bucktail
Water Depth: 25-60
Water Temp.: 55
Information : The water was real cold, which made fluking kinda slow.. Did manage to catch a bunch of shorts, with some borderline fish.. The skates were pretty thick everywhere we went, Manasquan Mile marker, Sea Girt gunwall, Spring Lake, off Shark River, and Bradley Beach.. Everybody seemed to be doing the same thing.. We need a good few days of non-south winds that will warm the water up, then the fishing should break open.. The only interesting development of the day was a pair of strange flatties that came over the rail, kind of a cross between a sundial and a summer flounder.. If anybody knows what it was, or even caught another, let me know via email!!

Boat Name: Skipjack
Date Fished: 5/30/98
Location: 17 Fathoms
Fishing Method: Chum & Troll
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 5-10 lbs
Bait or Lure: Bunker Chunks & Plugs
Water Depth: 100 +
Water Temp.: 58-62
Information : My partner and I anchored up at 17 Fathoms with approximately a dozen other boats. All boats were producing bluefish on the chum. Most fish averaged 5-6 lbs with an occasional 10-12 pounder thrown in. We personally boated 10 blues along with as many spiny dogfish before we decided to troll between 17 Fathoms and the BA Buoy. The seas were so calm we noted scads of bluefish lolling on the surface sunning themselves. In a little over 21/2 hours trolling plugs we boated another 20 blues. I'll leave it to you to figure out what the hot plug pattern was. By the way, noted a healthy abundance of bait on the Sci-Tek. Hopefully, it bodes well for the summer!

They were tons of fun on light tackle, Caught my limit in a half hour.. Not a bad day for a shakedown!!

I started trolling about a mile north of there location and had alot of bait marks within the top 15 feet with larger marks closer to the bottom. I changed over to a green banana tube, on a virgin Christmas rig, and within 10 minutes I had my first striper ( 34"*17#'s ) of the season. After about 30 more minutes I had a 10# blue and another striper ( 30"*15#'s ) which was caught on a blue and silver jaw breaker. For the first time out, I hope this is just a taste of whats to come for this season. My brother inlaw and I have a standing bet, Fist fish $ 5.00, so he wins this time.

Fishing Method: Trolling pony Tails
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 2to 3lbs Also weakfish @3lbs
Bait or Lure: Greenwith yellow pony tails
Water Depth: 7 Ft
Water Temp.: 69-70
Information : Started the day early with intention to catch Stripers but we forgot to take the eels with us. So we opted to try for weakfish by jigging fin s but couldent locate any. We did manage to find one fluke in Double creek channel by marker 18. Afetr that we took a ride to the inlet to see if there was any activity . But to our dismay we only found one sundial; 1 blue; 2 sea robins . we then went back to the 42 marker where we trolled blue fish and weakfish . I was very sur prised we picked up three weaks trolling. I think the reason we caught them was when i made a turn sharp which let the ponytail sink a little. It dident matter with the blue fish they would hit even trolling at 5.5to 6mph. the best area i fond was alittle north of 42 by the crab pots thats where we had most of our fish. so give it a try guys it saved our day I think we had atoatal of 35 blues but we only kept one that was hooked deep. give it atry guys and look for my brothers report from the Ocean Runner good luck and tight lines.

Water Depth: 80 ft

Information : I must admit this one was of the most exciting experiences I've ever had. I caught the biggest fish on the boat and what makes this experience so funny is that this was only my second time fishing my first was just about one month ago, out of Cape May, I didn't catch one thing but that's ok. It was really rough out there that day. We had a charter of 9 people including my 8 year old daughter, this would have been her first time also and the only time our stomaches churned was due to being hungry not because of the roughness of the ocean or the way the boat rocked like it was going to tilt over. The only thing it was a little chilly that day, and I mean to tell you it was rough but not too rough for me. On Saturday the ocean was calm and sparkling . The temperatures was in the 80s and it made for a perfect day to go fishing. It seemed like my instinct told me that I was going to catch something that day. Holy macro I didn't know I was going to catch that catch of the day. My bluefish was mean but I slammed him! Well I had little help from my old man and the boat's mait hooked him for me. I told my old man that I was going to get a whale of a fish and I did. I won the pool of $156.00. What a day to remember!

Bait or Lure: Killies/squid/chicken/etc
Water Depth: 30-40'
Water Temp.: current
Information : Saturday was a fair day. First time out and got 7 keepers between 3 of us. Fast water early then slack and little wind made irregular drifting conditions causing more tangles than usual. Mates Don and Arno did a good job as usual trying to keep everybody happy. Capt. Jim did as well as anyone trying to keep the boat straight. Saw quite a few fluke come on board with not as many throw backs as last year (we only had 2). Lots of skates and a few sharks but no blues or weaks. My only bad comment is that I wish people would learn a little about fishing in groups before getting on a party boat, but I guess after spending $25.00 and spending most of the day untying knots and retying lines teaches some people a lesson. Tight lines to all.

Specie: Fluke
Size: 14-19 inches
Bait or Lure: Squid/spearing.....squid/killie
Water Depth: 6-28 feet
Water Temp.: 59.7
Information : Started the day off drifting off the Bug Light since I knew this area has been producing a decent fluke bite the past 2 weeks. By the second drift 2 keepers were in the box. After a few more drifts and a total of 7 fluke in the box and the release of 1 short fluke,we moved over to the edge of the Swash Channel to chunk for awhile since the fluke bite died and the fleet had grown. in 3 hours of chunking we landed 3 bluefish from 4-7.5 pounds had numerous run offs and pulled the hook and 2 nice sized fish. On the way in we stopped that produced excelalnt early season fluking last year and in short order put an additional 5 keeper fluke in the box and released another short. The spearing/squid combination held a slight edge over the squid/kille combination.

Information : Four people fishing off Tinicum Island. Started fishing as the tide started to come come in. Got two twenty incher Stripers right away. Then a good run off that was lost. As the tide picked up, the fishing dropped off. Could only "pick" the rest of the day. Got several very small stripers. Lots of good size silver perch and as few catfish. This mix of fish is usual for this party. Would like to hear from anyone who can tell me how to raise stripers in the river without using blood worms. This guy tried everything and nothing works nearly as good as ($5.00) dozen bloods. Stripers are spawning now so release them quickly and gently. Happy Fishing...

Information : I finally got around to getting the boat down to the water. Left late in the morning to avoid the madness at the launch area. Succeeded in finding the madness on the roads and in the water. Fished the outgoing tide and my partner was dragged around the boat by a four pound bluefish. She was using ultra light tackle. Fishing was slow with well fed fluke merely sucking in the bait. As usual the first fish waited for me to have a sandwich in one hand, Captains of all boats insist on racing through the drifting fleet. It sure beats work. Returned to the boat yard to find someone parked in my spot. Yard shall remain nameless unless it happens again.

Water Depth: 19 Feet
