Location: 20 miles SE of Manasquan
Fishing Method: Bottom
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: up to 5 pounds
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 70
Water Temp.: 50
Information : Fed up with the horrible weather over Memorial Weekend the crew of the Canyon Runner decided we were going to fish Monday no matter how bad the conditions were. And they were bad. We left Manasquan Inlet at 5:30am in decent sea conditions (2-4 footers) but in pouring rain. The rain never stopped and by the time we were 20 miles southeast the seas were 6-8 – but the Sea Bass were there. Fishing in 70 feet of water we loaded the cooler with a limit of Sea Bass up to 5 pounds with a dozen of 4 pounds. We were headed back by 10am and when we hit the Inlet the wind hit 30+ knots. We wouldn’t think of subjecting a charter to this unwilling and so the crew included a few captains/boat owners from Clark’s Landing, Captain Phil Dulanie, Adam LaRosa, and mates Mike Zajac, Billy Rowan and Brad Burgess.

I must be doing something right. Boated 7 fish, 6 to 18 lbs and missed or dropped 10 or more others. High hook may have been 10 or 11 fish. Information : Pulled out of the slip slightly before 2PM. Arrived at Romers in @ 25 minutes. Setup in a trough between white water. Had my first bass on before the anchorman was back in the cockpit. A beautiful 35" bass. caught 3 more bass in the following 15 minutes (releasing them all)-a 37", 37" and a 32". The other four guys all had the same type of action. For the next 90+ minutes there seemed to be 3 of us hooked up constantly and many times all 5 of us were into nice fish. We were only keeping the bleeders and releasing the rest to spawn and fight another day as we didn't want to go over our limit in case we got into some true trophies. We released at least 3 bass that were 38"s. Slot size bass didn't show until the very end of the bite. Bluefish were not a problem as only 3 were caught. A quick stop atop the Knoll yielded another caught & released 35 inch bass and a small bluefish. I honestly lost count of how many bass I caught but I'd give a conservative estimate at 12-15 in the 2 hours of actual fishing time. Was in the car by 5:30PM.

DO NOT BELIEVE BETTY and NICK's WEBSITE!!! DON'T BOTHER CALLING THEM EITHER!!! Todays report said that big bass were scored off the tip of the north jetty yesterday. I was there. You couldn't even attempt to go out on the rocks. There was green water washing over them all afternoon. They are reporting fish caught at 2am Thursday morning as being caught yesterday during the day. The shop used to be somewhat accurate in their reporting. How about "fish spread up and down the beach, blues are there but currently out of reach in the wind". That's what John Sr. would have reported. Not anymore. John Jr. should know better.

Boat Name: From shore in Manasquan
Date Fished: May 23, 2003
Location: Manasquan, just at the end of the jetty, but not on the jetty.
Fishing Method: Hmmm....Just my ordinary fishing rod with a shad dart and one of those weighted hooks with the bright yellow blob on the end that has an eye. I added a bit of supermarket squid tentacles.
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 20 inches
Bait or Lure: shad dart, yellow weighted hook with eye dot and squid tentacles.
Water Depth: Whatever the river is at that point.
Water Temp.: Probably cold.
Information : It was a "kewl" day of fishing (as my son would say). Everyone around was catching lots of bluefish -- they seemed to come in bunches, with a group of really big ones arriving just as a flock of gulls and cormorants moved past, probably diving for a school of tiny fish which were attracting the big bluefish. Because it was raining, there was no boat traffic on the river and weakfish like that. The guy next to me caught a weakfish -- a beautiful fish. There was a family with kids practicing casting next to him and he let the little girl pull in what he thought was another bluefish but was surprised when it turned out to be a weakfish. He took the rod back and said, delighted, "I'll pull that one in." When I left around 7:30 everyone was still catching bluefish, but it was getting far too cold and wet for me.

On the out going tide is when the fishing picked up and we landed a 38" Striper, we all got our limit and released quite a few before the clams and chum ran out. The Todd Polumbo charter from Darien, Conn may not have picked the best weather day but they picked it right with respect to when the Sea Bass were finally going to break wide open. Perhaps we over shot them the last few trips but due to the unfavorable conditions on the way out we stop short in 70 feet of water and had 4 pound Sea Bass coming over the rail before the anchor came tight. We filled up the cooler with a limit for everyone on the boat releasing another 50 putting the total easily over 200 for the day. We returned to the same spot where we enjoyed bailing large bass the day before but we found a different situation. Fishing was a slow pick and the fish were not as big. However the party filled all limit categories including bonus tags and released slots which we could not find the day before.

After anchoring in 11 feet of water around 7:30 a.m. we started to chum clams. We had our first fish on in 15 minutes. It was steady action on the remainder of the in cominmg tide. The difference with this trip from our others was there were a number of larger fish. We had trouble filling the slot size limit while catching and releaseing many larger fish. The majority of stripers were between 31 and 35 inches with Chris Wittshire catching the largest of the day 16 3/4 pounds. We had our limit by 11:30 however we stayed to release many more fish. Saw 4 draggers working 3 miles off Shark River, but read more bait and fish inshore of them. It didn't take long, caught 2 nice fish within a 30 min slot and both fish hitting big bunker spoons. My first day out and the weather was super and the fishing was ok! Happy trails...

Information : unfortunately this was the first time out for me this year. wind about 16 kts, but it was better than Saturday. Tried anchoring first up in the shallows of the bay where the water was likeley to be the warmest. Picked up six 3-6 lb. blues plus sandsharks and skates. Switched to short drifts (narrow channels in the back-bay) and had a consistant pick. Boated 4 flounder to 21" - threw back seven shorts, plus another 5 bluefish. Bay seems to have a lot of fish as shown on sonar. Top N Bottom rig was hot and bottom rigs with a shorter than usual leader worked well too. I think the spearing is the secret weapon for bait.

Water Depth: 20-40'
Water Temp.: forgot to ask
Information : Treated ourselves to our annual charter away from the All Hooked Up. The crew on the Noreaster in Cape May manages to outfish most and the guys define the word "expert" when it comes to striped bass fishing. I managed to watch a trick that has outdone any fishing trick I have every seen. That's all I'll say at this point. Beautiful night on the bay as we managed to pick away at 'em all evening and night. Put 11 in the box with the smallest at 29" that looked like a slot fish next to the others. Dropped about a half dozen fish and Eric lost something monstrous (possibly a big drum or sand tiger shark).

Water Depth: 75-90

Information : Inshore Sea Bass fishing is starting to take shape. Captains Phil Dulanie and Burt Rothenberg had the Shawn Mallory charter from Holmdel, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Wednesday and hit a couple wrecks 20 miles southeast of Manasquan in 75-90 feet of water. With a ripping current due to tomorrow’s full moon conditions where less than favorable and holding on the wreck was a problem all morning – as such only a slow pick was put together by Shawn and his son Kyle (11) and the rest of the crew. However, after noon, once the current let up, the Sea Bass came on strong and the charter was able to put together a limit filling three quarters of a cooler with Sea Bass up to 3.5 pounds. The water temperature was 51.5 degree however the bottom temperature was significantly cooler. Another few degrees on the bottom temp and we should be bailing Sea Bass as both wrecks were stacked up with them according to the fish finder. In addition, several blackfish were caught with 10 kept and many released.

Size: up to 35 inches
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 15
Water Temp.: 53
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Joe Dalik took the Joe Scott charter from Jersey City, NJ up to Romer Shoal today and got Joe's four children, Trishten (13) Brianna (12) Naaya (8) and Branden (6) into a hot bite of Stipers. Everyone including the children quickly limited out with slot, keeper and bonus fish by 9:30 am using clams in 15 feet of water on the western end of Romer. Chumming with clam shells and putting down a couple of pots brought the bass right to the back of the boat and the kids once again did a great job. The majority of the bass were in the 28-31 inch class but we did have fish up to 35 inches. Enough can't be said about the great stiper fishing right now and everyone should got in on it before it is over. In addition to the limits we released dozens of bass and dozens of bluefish and were headed home at 11AM reaching the dock just before the wind started howling.

They each totaled 12 Stripers a piece up to 36inches and we headed home with another limit in all categories for the 5 man charter. In addition we released another 12+ Bass. We were inundated with blues and spent most of the day fighting off the Blues to get to the Bass. We were once again limited to a short day and were out of there headed home by 11am as the boys had to get back to a late afternoon little league game where Ron Jr. was the scheduled starting pitcher. After waking up at 4am and putting in a long day in the cockpit I hope Ron Jr. makes it through the first inning. We were once again set up on Romer Shoal in 12 feet of water by 7:30am and chummed very heavy with the clams to fight off the boat traffic.

Fishing Method: Clamming
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: to 38"
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 15 feet
Water Temp.: 52
Information : On Friday the crew of the Canyon Runner was under the gun to put a catch together quickly as the charter needed to make it an early day. Captain Phil Dulanie and Justin Nighan had no problem putting a limit catch including bonus fish together for the Sam DeFeo charter from Greenwich, Conn. Stopping short of Romer Shoal we found only bluefish on the slack tide and picked-up and moved to Romer in 15 feet of water. The Bass were there within minutes and everyone had their limit including bonus fish by 11am We released bass for another 30 minutes and headed home. Interestingly, most of the fish were from 34inches to 38inches and we had a hard time filling the slot limit. Again, circle hooks, fluorocarbon and clams produced. Once the blues showed up the only way to shut them off was to stop throwing clams. It worked and the bass kept biting.

Information : Tried jigging with bucktail and diamond jig with green tail. Also casting with same. No luck. Trolling at 1300 rpm (3-5 mph) produced quick results with green bomber, about 6 inches long. Smaller Yozuri crystal lure didn't work. Blue bomber also worked. Good fun.

Location: Romer Shoal and West
Fishing Method: clams on the bottom
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 7 fish to 14 lbs
Bait or Lure: clams
Water Depth: 19-22 feet
Water Temp.: ?
Information : Fished Romer Shoal starting about 730. Actually - there are a few Romer Shoals that show up on my chart- but it was the one by the lighthouse. Couple other boats. Four stripers in two spots. Clam belly chum and slow pick. A few bluefish mixed in. Later on we moved and caught a fish at high noon, next to the party boats. Caught three fish on the inshore flat in about 10 minutes around 345 pm and that was it til dark. Many varied reports from zip to fair to limit catches. Didn't read much or see much trolling but I heard they did well. My buddy stopped and talked to two different party boats that docked - and the fishing reports varied considerably. First time fishing the bay and the ramp was neat and clean at Atlantic Highlands Bait and tackle. Clams $25 a bushell which are harder to get down in Pt Pleasant. Good luck, Dave

Location: Leonardo Beach
Fishing Method: lures
Specie: Bluefish
Size: up to 12 lbs
Bait or Lure: Top Water plugs
Water Depth: 6'
Water Temp.: ?
Information : The blitz was on. The blue fish had the bunker running up on the beach. I caught so many blue fish that I thought my arm was going to fall off. I may have burned out another drag on these fresh from the ocean gators. The fish were so thick that you could almost walk to Earl Pier and not get wet. I released all fish to fight another day. I could not get under the blues to look for bass from the beach, but I know they were under the school chowing down on the chunk slick made by the big blues. As soon as my arm is ready, I'll be back for some more fun in the suds.

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: May 7
Location: Romer Shoal
Fishing Method: Clamming
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: up to 34"
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 12-20
Water Temp.: 52
Information : On Wednesday Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Justin Nighan took the Billy Wrede charter from Randolph, NJ out on the Canyon Runner and was back up on Romer Shoal to clam the Bass. However, with fresh clams impossible to come by we were stuck using fresh frozen and the bite never turned on too hot – although clams were probably not the culprit for not putting 50+ Bass in the boat. You see on Wednesday’s trip success was not marked with numbers That is, Billy’s 7-year old son Brian Wrede and 10-year old son Kevin Wrede did all the fishing and refused to dead stick any of the bass – each working their own rod back in the slick. They gave it their all and did each limited out on all categories including bonus fish and released another 9 bass and 20 bluefish – not bad for two kids who’s combined age still does not make them eligible to vote. We anchored in 12 feet of water on Romer Shoal and clammed heavy until the blues showed up. The bite could best be described as a slow pick from 7am until 1pm.

Boat Name: HOW.COM
Date Fished: 5/3 and 5/7
Location: Sandy Hook and IBSP
Fishing Method: Clamming
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 24-33"
Bait or Lure: Clam
Water Depth: Surf - 30ft
Water Temp.: 52-54 deg
Information : Sorry for the delayed report - had to travel early Monday Morning... Fished with Captian Rhino on the HOW.COM on Sunday the 3rd and had the best Striper action we've seen in a long time, anchored up 1 mile south of Sandy Hook, 250yds from shore, chummed with a clam/bunker oil log and chunked clam balls. nonstop action from 10:30am until we ran out of bait. Forty Stripers boated and limited for a four man crew in about 15 or 20 mins, catch and release through the rest of the tide cycle including a tagged bass. Only difficulty involved getting slot sized fish, with all but a few being in the 28-30" range. Unbelieveable. For the record, the fleet was a mile north of us and we were in a "private" hole. On Sunday I don't think it mattered though, as long as you had clams, it seems like you had bass.
Did a surf run yesterday with Roger J from the Shark River Bass Club and had a killer day again. A little foggy in the morning and shifting winds that became easterly slowed it down compared to Sunday, but there was considerable action. The surf is holding a lot of Blues, so while clamming is still the only way to go, using a little extra weight to get it down through the blues was a must. Roger and I had a good day with our fill of Bass and Bluefish. We knocked it off at slack tide, out of clams again... Good fishing - try to get out there while this blitz last, if it's like last year we should see the rush improve all the way through Father's day. Tight lines. GonZo
