Boat Name: Think Positive
Date Fished: 5/25/02
Location: Raritan Bay Sandy Hook Bay
Fishing Method: Chum & Chunk
Specie: Bluefish
Size: up to 36"
Bait or Lure: Bunker
Water Depth: 20 feet
Water Temp.: 57 F
Information : Launched Think Positive at Atlantic Highlands in the AM. For hours,
just hooked skates and sea robins - lots of wind and swells. We finally got into
blues in the evening. It was non-stop action for an hour or so. I held Monica's
first blue of the season in front of her for a quick photo. I swayed to close due to
a swell. The thing turned its body and bit her jacket - just over her
left...(chest). The parents laughed it up while I played tug-of-war with the fish
and her jacket - wouldn't let go for a minute or two! Monica was later rewarded with
the biggest blue of the day (about 3-feet)! It must have took over 100' of line.
She fought and landed it perfectly - nice work Monica! Mom had a few, and Jim broke
his line, not once, but twice, on huge fish hooked up on bunker heads - probably
stripers. The girls saw the second big fish break water, just then, Jim fell
backwards into the bow as the line snapped. A great day on the bay!

Information : After last weekends 15 bass ,this Saturday was not as good.
My son Rich who was visiting from Aspen,Co joined us as we trolled West Bank in the
morning and Romer Shoals in the early afternoon using umbrellas with tubes, shads and
bunker spoons. Finally got two fish at Flynns Knoll in the early afternoon. One of
28" by Rich and one of 30" by
Harold.
Decided to head home to Edgewater by trolling the West Bank on the way in. Lost a
shad umbrella after a nice hit when the wire line broke, leaving us with one rod with
an umbrella of red tubes. Rich got a nice
hit and proceeded to try to bring the fish in when he discovered that the drag
couldn't be tightened down very much. After a struggle it turned out that he had a
double header of bass one of 30" and one 32". It's a good thing he stays in shape
snowboarding, biking and playing basketball in Aspen.

Water Depth: 20 - 30

Information : Left the dock at 7:30 and ran up to the Shrewsbury Rocks. Trolled white
shads and picked up a slot striper and a 10lb blue. Had to leave because the heavy
boat traffic turned the bass off. Ran up to the Hook, near Romer. Dropped the shads
in the water and within minutes both poles went off. Boated two nice stripers, one
slot and one around 31". I thought we were in for a banner day, but unfortunately no
other fish were taken from that area. We must have accidently stopped right on top of
'em. Decided to move out between the channels. We found some fish there and chummed
'em with clams. We picked 6 nice fish on clams and decided to call it a day.

Location: Sandy Hook
Fishing Method: drift
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: to 36"
Bait or Lure: sandworm
Water Depth: 20-30'
Water Temp.: mid 50's
Information : Drove down to the boat this morning to catch the ebb tide at Raritan
Bay.
Knowing the morning was to present light west winds, I decided to chunk some bunker.
I really hate bunker (hate the way it smells, hate the mess, don't like riding the
anchor in one place... I just don't like any part of it --- same goes for clams), but
I'm nursing this vision of a 50# bass gliding up over a rise in a mussel bed and
inhaling my nice bunker head, so I continue to mess with bunker. But, not being
fully committed to the vision, I also picked up my Spring "confidence bait" ---
sandworms.
Left the dock and headed for the "back of the bay". Hit a couple of favorite spots,
but saw no life.., none in the air, on the surface, or on the sounder. Headed for
Old Orchard Schoal... place looked like the parking lot at the Cheesequake rest stop;
they may have been in bass up to their knees, for all I know, but I refuse to fish in
that kind of crowd.
Moved out onto Flynns Knoll and fished two nice mussel beds. I was all by myself...
no other boats and unfortunately, no fish (except a decent blue, but they weren't the
target for today). Took the rest of the bunker and dumped it.
Now, here comes the good part. Re-rigged for sandworms. Ran to one of my better
sandworm drifting spots and got down to business. First drift... bang, a nice 29"
bass. Two drifts later, a nice 28" bass. Next drift (current combined with 15-20
knot westerly... boat is really movin'), I feel a subtle bump and set up on it...
line starts peeling off the reel (and the drag was pretty tight... I'm fishing 20# on
a Penn 965). About 150-200' of line peels off (I'm starting to get those nervous
thoughts about being "spooled"; combined with the "this is the fish of a lifetime"
jitters) before I get its' head turned and coming my way. 10 minutes later, I boated
my best bass of the season... 36"+ @ 25#. She swam away nice and strong; I hope to
see her again in 4-5 years.
Moral of the story is now is the time to go get 'em and don't be afraid to leave "the
fleet" and do your own thing.
Good luck this weekend.

started off trolling the area west of Chapel Hill. The area only produced a slow
pick. All the Bass were caught on Shad Rigs. Pulling Spoons was a big zero. It
appeared that the big spread of larger fish that were in this area scattered
overnight, since the fish caught were in the 29" to 35" size range. We finished up in
the area of the Knoll where we managed to catch enough to give us a limit catch of 12
Bass for the day. Another 7 Bass were released.

Information : Fished the surf at Beach Haven this past weekend. About 3 hours before

persistence paid off as some other folks fishing near me landed some bass as well ..
all action was on clams.

Location: Atlantic City - Cigar
Fishing Method: Chumming
Specie: Blue Shark
Size: 180lbs.
Bait or Lure: Mackerel
Water Depth: 133
Water Temp.: 53-54
Information : We went out to the Cigar area in hopes of a early mako. Best we could
find was 54 degree water, but real clear. Had purpoises around the boat! In 53 water!
Nothing doing for the first 2 hours until we ran into some big slammer bluefish. We
then got a hookup on the closest mackerel...Actually got a glimpse of it in the
water....swore it was a mako. Fought it for approx. 20 minutes. Big blue shark. I
always thought they were usually skinny, slow and lethargic this time of year...this
one was fat and fought hard. Tagged it. Man, thought we had one....oh well..I'm sure
the makos will be here real soon. Take care.

Specie: Bluefish
Size: 0
Bait or Lure: Bunker/Clam
Water Depth: 18-40
Water Temp.: 52 degrees
Information : ...I don't know what everybody is talking about but Sunday was a real
stinker. The water was great, the skies sunny, but the fishing stunk! Not a bite all
day. Fished the outgoing tide early morning without a nibble. It wasn't just us. Not
very many fish landed. At the docks only one large Blue. Next time I troll. It seems
trollers had the better part of the deal. Good luck. You'll need it.

Date Fished: May 4,5
Location: GE Reef off
Fishing Method: Anchored
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size:
Bait or Lure: Clams,Crabs,Mackeral
Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 58
Information : On both days we fished the GE Reef. The conditions were great on both
days with the seas being 1-3 feet. On the first day we decided to go the reef on word
of taug being caught, but we didn't have the patience to get on a wreck. So we
anchored up by a drop off. We hooked up with tons of sea bass(kept 30), but we were
looking for taug. Then today we wanted to stay in the intlet and catch Bluefish. We
stayed there for awhile but didn't get any bites. We headed out to the reef, found a
wreck and achored up on it. There was one problem we didn't bring any crabs. We
hooked up with tons of seabass again(kept 20) and one Taug. There was one problem we
didn't get any crabs because we thought we were just going to stay in the inlet for
blues. We knew there were tons of taug because a boat told us while we were leaving.
It was still a great first time out for the season.

Fishing Method: drift
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 27-32"
Bait or Lure: sandworm
Water Depth: 15

Information : After a disappointing bunker chunking trip on Saturday (bunch of blues,
zero bass, wind blowing the boat to the NW... while the current was running to the
east, plus the bonus of a bunker scented boat), went back to drifting sandworms on
the flats. 2 hours of early evening fishing scored 3 stripers (27-32"), some blues,
and my first, much anticipated sea robins of the season.

Bait or Lure: Manns Purple Mackeral
Water Depth: 30' to 60'

Highlight of day was 15lb striper which was delicious table fare last eveing. Of 18
fish, 14 hit the Manns Stretch 25 Purple Mackeral. Thats a very high percentage
considering we were trolling up to five different lures. Go figure! Thats fishin!
Can't wait for next weekend.
