Fishing Method: Chum & Chunk
Specie: Bluefish
Size: up to 36"
Bait or Lure: Bunker
Water Depth: 20 feet
Water Temp.: 57 F
Information : Launched Think Positive at Atlantic Highlands in the AM. For hours, just hooked skates and sea robins - lots of wind and swells. We finally got into blues in the evening. It was non-stop action for an hour or so. I held Monica's first blue of the season in front of her for a quick photo. I swayed to close due to a swell. The thing turned its body and bit her jacket - just over her left...(chest). The parents laughed it up while I played tug-of-war with the fish and her jacket - wouldn't let go for a minute or two! Monica was later rewarded with the biggest blue of the day (about 3-feet)! It must have took over 100' of line. She fought and landed it perfectly - nice work Monica! Mom had a few, and Jim broke his line, not once, but twice, on huge fish hooked up on bunker heads - probably stripers. The girls saw the second big fish break water, just then, Jim fell backwards into the bow as the line snapped. A great day on the bay!

Water Temp.: 40's-50's
Information : as usual it was a terrible day for me. started off on the rocks down at union beach, no action except for when a duck flew into my line. a guy from europe came by and told me that the hot fishing was on the incoming tide at a spot called pebble beach, so me and the g/f picked it up and went there. stayed for a few hours, and didn't even get so much as a sniff, except for the feeling of seaweed dragging against my weight. birds were feeding, but didn't seem to make a difference. guys with boats around, and other surf fisherman picked up nothing but a cold as well, except one guy who managed to pick up an undersized fluke. at the end of the day i had too much bait, a broken 120 dollar rod, and a screwed up spool from a nosey kid who can't keep his hands off stuff. i dont know why i dont quit this fishing stuff

Information : Choosing Raritan Bay over the Roaring Fork River of Aspen, Colorado, my son Richard joined us again this Sunday in trying to catch the elusive striped bass. After a late start we arrived at the West Bank light and proceeded to troll towards Old Orchard light. Trolling one umbrella with tubes and another with shads, we soon got a doubleheader with fish on each rod. Rich on the rod with the tubes caught a 41? beauty and brother-in-law Rich brought one in about 32?. The good fishing lasted about another half hour in which we caught 3 more stripers, 30?, 34? and 36? and one small bluefish. Trolling Romer Shoals added another small bluefish. We hung around for another hour with out another hit and left for Edgewater about 1:30, so we could get ready to go to the Nets game that evening. The Nets won, capping off a great Sunday Rich was glad that he stayed in the East vs. the Rocky Mountains.

Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: mixed
Bait or Lure: clams squid
Water Depth: 60-180 ft.
Water Temp.: 50's
Information : Good fishing for all the bottom fishing boats on Sun. Lots of nice sea bass and ling for all on board the Dauntless. Boat was JAM PACKED with people which made for way too many nasty tangles and words.Fishing was good with few dead areas.Good boat and crew but with all the people on board it was tough to get a mate when you needed one. They were a bit over taxed I believe.Never saw a boat so crowded, which says a lot for the capt.Mostly seabass with a few blackfish. Most fares caught plenty of keepers. Capt went out to Mud Hole to top the catch off with some ling. The only thing I didn't like about the trip besides the crowd was the fact that no crabs or squid were supplied. clams only.I think there were a lot more blacks out there but they don't respond as well to clams as they do to crabs. The sea bass seemed to like squid better than clams but only those people who BOUGHT thier own were able to take advantage. I did buy some, but it ran out QUICK!! and my catch rate dropped off a bit. No matter.. still got more than enough. Nice boat to fish on. I'll be going out many more times on the Dauntless ,but will make sure it is less crowded next time... weekdays maybe?

Water Depth: 48 to 70 Ft

Information : Well headed south from Manasquan Inlet to one of my favorite wrecks. However, due to the strong North current and wind had a difficult time getting set up over the wreck. Current so strong that my marker bouy weigthing 4 lbs wouldn't hold. But, finally anchored up after an hour. The wreck appeared to be void of fish or they weren't biting. Not much chatter on the raido about any kind of action. So we Headed out to Manasquan Ridge. Set up troll and the 1 st fish to hit was a 15 lb 35 inch Stripper. My Sons very 1 st bass. You talk about luck. We also boated half dozen Blues up to 8 lbs. All and all not too bad of a day.But then any day fishing is a go day.Remember keep a tight Line !

Saw a racoon scampering around under the rocks. Almost fed him the bunker, so it wouldn't go to waste! Same fish story here. Nothing, on clams or bunker. Saw people pulling in a few sea robins, and saw one guy pul in 2 small blues. I now have about 18 Cherrystone clams left over, on ice. I cook them with garlic, oregano, and some red wine. Had a great day out at the ocean with Mike, even though we didn't catch anything. We had lunch at Poor Pete's Pizza and Sandwich Shop near Union Beach. Had a decent Sausage Parmiagiana sandwich.

Herring were the 2.0 lb range, and herring by the acre, some small-med size weakies mixed in along the bottom, weakies very picky, taking small white fin-S on slow retrieve. Atlantic/ Grey Dolphin were feasting on all the herring too. Unusual to see dolphin so close to the bridges. The fish do come back when the boat/jet ski traffic abates. Can we get the jet skis out of the NJ state parks? Wouldn't it be great?

Mike, Paul and I "GOT SKUNKED",but the rest of the boat did well. There is no doubt, Mike is a jinx. The guys on the bow and starboard side of the boat must have been using some magical clam, they did very, very, very well. The Pool Winner was a 25 and a half pound beauty. The angler did not want the fish,so Mike took it. He will be eating Bass for the next week. The boys and I will try again next week, hopefully without the 15 mph wind this time. Location: Great Kills Beach
Fishing Method: Surf, Chunck
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: Large
Bait or Lure: Bunker
Water Depth: Surf
Water Temp.: Felt Okay
Information : I may just be the worst, most unlucky, fisherman in the world. I came up over the berm at Great Kills Beach last evening to see the birds working, and two guys both fighting big fish. Their fish were thrashing & breaking the surface 100 yds out, as the water glistened in the early evening sun. I took a deep breath & a comforting feeling came over me as I said to myself "this is the day you've been waiting for". By the time I rigged up my first rod and got a chunk of bunker out, the guys next to me beached an additional Striper and Blue (both about 10 lbs). Anticipating easy fishing, I chose to cast and retrieve poppers, cranks, spoons and jigs with my other rod as I continuously kept an eye on the bunker rod in the sand spike - nothing. I turned my back on the rod once. I walked down the beach to discuss the conditions with a fellow fisherman when the whole beach ahead of me started screaming at me. I looked behind me to see my pole had dragged through 30 feet of beach and was just entering the water. I sprinted a good distance, then straight into the water, and dove head first just ahead of where I last saw the rod. I landed right on it, grabbed hold of it, and came up out of the water like Rambo, fighting a huge fish. I fought the fish for several minutes in waste-high water only to find out the drag was completely ceased from the sand. When I got the fish near the beach, it took one strong dash and freed himself. Soaking wet head to tow, I proceeded to miss the next five fish that hit my lines. AND the toothless jerk on my right stole my brand new jig that I dropped just before my "Pete Rose dive"! My wallet, cigarettes, and keys are still drying. I have yet to catch my first striper or blue from the beach!

Finally got two fish at Flynns Knoll in the early afternoon. One of 28" by Rich and one of 30" by Harold. Decided to head home to Edgewater by trolling the West Bank on the way in. Lost a shad umbrella after a nice hit when the wire line broke, leaving us with one rod with an umbrella of red tubes. Rich got a nice hit and proceeded to try to bring the fish in when he discovered that the drag couldn't be tightened down very much. After a struggle it turned out that he had a double header of bass one of 30" and one 32". It's a good thing he stays in shape snowboarding, biking and playing basketball in Aspen.

Boated two nice stripers, one slot and one around 31". I thought we were in for a banner day, but unfortunately no other fish were taken from that area. We must have accidently stopped right on top of 'em. Decided to move out between the channels. We found some fish there and chummed 'em with clams. We picked 6 nice fish on clams and decided to call it a day.

Information : Drove down to the boat this morning to catch the ebb tide at Raritan Bay. Knowing the morning was to present light west winds, I decided to chunk some bunker. I really hate bunker (hate the way it smells, hate the mess, don't like riding the anchor in one place... I just don't like any part of it --- same goes for clams), but I'm nursing this vision of a 50# bass gliding up over a rise in a mussel bed and inhaling my nice bunker head, so I continue to mess with bunker. But, not being fully committed to the vision, I also picked up my Spring "confidence bait" --- sandworms. Left the dock and headed for the "back of the bay". Hit a couple of favorite spots, but saw no life.., none in the air, on the surface, or on the sounder. Headed for Old Orchard Schoal... place looked like the parking lot at the Cheesequake rest stop; they may have been in bass up to their knees, for all I know, but I refuse to fish in that kind of crowd. Moved out onto Flynns Knoll and fished two nice mussel beds. I was all by myself... no other boats and unfortunately, no fish (except a decent blue, but they weren't the target for today). Took the rest of the bunker and dumped it. Now, here comes the good part. Re-rigged for sandworms. Ran to one of my better sandworm drifting spots and got down to business. First drift... bang, a nice 29" bass. Two drifts later, a nice 28" bass. Next drift (current combined with 15-20 knot westerly... boat is really movin'), I feel a subtle bump and set up on it... line starts peeling off the reel (and the drag was pretty tight... I'm fishing 20# on a Penn 965). About 150-200' of line peels off (I'm starting to get those nervous thoughts about being "spooled"; combined with the "this is the fish of a lifetime" jitters) before I get its' head turned and coming my way. 10 minutes later, I boated my best bass of the season... 36"+ @ 25#. She swam away nice and strong; I hope to see her again in 4-5 years. Moral of the story is now is the time to go get 'em and don't be afraid to leave "the fleet" and do your own thing. Good luck this weekend.

Information : Took my Dad out for a little surf fishing. Hadn't seen him since deer season; and in his retirement, he's gotten a little too comfortable in the recliner. Classic surf fishing conditions... heavy overcast, northeast wind, breaking waves, and working birds. He scored a 22" blue and a matching striper on a bucktail & Fin S teaser. I get a kick out of watching him fish... even a big sea robin gets him excited. Just a few blues for me, but that's OK, today was more about "quality time" than hard core fishing. If your "old man" is still around, take him fishing.. I'm sure he took you once or twice.

Bunker heads attracted the largest fish 20-30 lbs. Clams and bunker chunks produced slightly smaller fish. Very few blue fish. The fish are stacked up in the bay now... get out there ASAP.

Information : Fished the reach near the # 16 bell. Caught a 36" on Shad rig, but the large white bunker spoon was the hot lure today. We started trolling just one rod because as soon as we let it out, we had another fish on. At one point we got into a school of larger stripers and just started casting to them. They were chewing on the bunker right in front of us and we could pick which striper to hook up with. They were all mixed in with big bluefish. Ended up with a bunch of stripers between 15 - 19 pounds and about 10 bluefish. All within 1 1/2 hours. Everyone around us that were fishing the sloppy seas were constantly hooked up too.

We finished up in the area of the Knoll where we managed to catch enough to give us a limit catch of 12 Bass for the day. Another 7 Bass were released.

Information : Fished the surf at Beach Haven this past weekend. About 3 hours before high tide on Sunday caught 2 bass, 15 & 18 lbs. Lots of Skates in the water but persistence paid off as some other folks fishing near me landed some bass as well .. all action was on clams.

Date Fished: 5/5/2002
Location: Atlantic City - Cigar
Fishing Method: Chumming
Specie: Blue Shark
Size: 180lbs.
Bait or Lure: Mackerel
Water Depth: 133
Water Temp.: 53-54
Information : We went out to the Cigar area in hopes of a early mako. Best we could find was 54 degree water, but real clear. Had purpoises around the boat! In 53 water! Nothing doing for the first 2 hours until we ran into some big slammer bluefish. We then got a hookup on the closest mackerel...Actually got a glimpse of it in the water....swore it was a mako. Fought it for approx. 20 minutes. Big blue shark. I always thought they were usually skinny, slow and lethargic this time of year...this one was fat and fought hard. Tagged it. Man, thought we had one....oh well..I'm sure the makos will be here real soon. Take care.

Location: Sandy Hook/Flynes Knoll
Fishing Method: Anchor/Chum
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 0
Bait or Lure: Bunker/Clam
Water Depth: 18-40
Water Temp.: 52 degrees
Information : ...I don't know what everybody is talking about but Sunday was a real stinker. The water was great, the skies sunny, but the fishing stunk! Not a bite all day. Fished the outgoing tide early morning without a nibble. It wasn't just us. Not very many fish landed. At the docks only one large Blue. Next time I troll. It seems trollers had the better part of the deal. Good luck. You'll need it.

Boat Name: Donzi 35
Date Fished: May 4,5
Location: GE Reef off
Fishing Method: Anchored
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size:
Bait or Lure: Clams,Crabs,Mackeral
Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 58
Information : On both days we fished the GE Reef. The conditions were great on both days with the seas being 1-3 feet. On the first day we decided to go the reef on word of taug being caught, but we didn't have the patience to get on a wreck. So we anchored up by a drop off. We hooked up with tons of sea bass(kept 30), but we were looking for taug. Then today we wanted to stay in the intlet and catch Bluefish. We stayed there for awhile but didn't get any bites. We headed out to the reef, found a wreck and achored up on it. There was one problem we didn't bring any crabs. We hooked up with tons of seabass again(kept 20) and one Taug. There was one problem we didn't get any crabs because we thought we were just going to stay in the inlet for blues. We knew there were tons of taug because a boat told us while we were leaving. It was still a great first time out for the season. YFIS Jeremy

Location: Raritan Bay
Fishing Method: drift
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 27-32"
Bait or Lure: sandworm
Water Depth: 15
Water Temp.: 55
Information : After a disappointing bunker chunking trip on Saturday (bunch of blues, zero bass, wind blowing the boat to the NW... while the current was running to the east, plus the bonus of a bunker scented boat), went back to drifting sandworms on the flats. 2 hours of early evening fishing scored 3 stripers (27-32"), some blues, and my first, much anticipated sea robins of the season.

Thats a very high percentage considering we were trolling up to five different lures. Go figure! Thats fishin! Can't wait for next weekend. P.S.
