Fishing Method: surf
Specie: Striped Bass

Information : Cxl's the trip to the rocks (again) and worked the inlet instead. Got out right when the wind quit this afternoon, we were able to catch about 4 hrs of outgoing tide. The water in the bay is pretty warm so temps rose in the inlet as the tide poured through. Slow, but steady pick with 5 fish in 4 hrs. Every fish was bigger than the one before it, pretty neat. Picked up a nice fluke too, 24" 4.8lbs. There were a lot of herring in the inlet too. The STRIPER is this weekend from 7pm Friday til 2pm Sunday. Captain's meeting is 7pm at the Seaside Heights police station, $3000 in prizes, $100 for a 4 man team. Team Rhino will be represented by Capt Howie Fried, "Worm" Arliss, "Hands" Hughes and myself. We're looking forward to some nice fish this year, grab some buddies and get out there, it's an open tourney -- ya never know, a few hours on the beach could be worth a few bucks! email me for details. Size: Up to 4 Lbs.
Bait or Lure: Clams

Angler Name : GonZo
E-Mail : gonzofishes@msn.com
Boat Name: Team White Rhino
Date Fished: 5/30
Location: IBSP
Fishing Method: Plugging/Clamballing
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 2 slots
Bait or Lure: Yellow Makati, Clam
Water Depth: Surf
Water Temp.: 57
Information : Heard some chatter about guys catching stripers on plugs at the beach so I had to try it out - except for being tied to a 100lb tarpon, there are few things more enjoyable to me than bass in the surf on plugs (don't tell my wife...) Anyway, I rolled down to IBSP around 3pm, fished 'til 9pm, no one was doing anything. Stood there in the cold wind for a few hours. Finally hooked up around dusk on a yellow Makati on an 8 1/2 ft plugging rod. Nice fish, only 26 inches but 10 lbs, had already started packing the truck when the clam rod doubled over, another 26 incher, normal sized though about 7 1/2 lbs. Both fish were photographed and released. I stopped at a few guys' sites on the way out, but everyone had about the same luck so I packed it up. Ironically, the fish came around dusk, which is just when the nasty west wind quit... We're hoping for the wind to shift back to easterly before the cows pass us up offshore - caught a lot of fish this year, but no really big ones, I'd hate to wait til September.... We're booked to run from Squan to the Shrewsbury rocks tomorrow if the weather holds, my bros up there are still reporting hot action on Mann's 25s and nice slot fish coming in on umbrellas, we'll see... We're getting the new store up and the photo albums online too, but I wanted to say what's up to Bob Spracklin. He's been working toooo hard and hadn't put in any time in the water this year. Last week, first trip out he put a hook in and landed a 66lb drum from the sod banks at the south end of LBI, nice fish, way to go bro. Get out there soon, tournament season starts NOW! Tight lines everyone - see ya out there - GonZo

Boat Name: Teal
Date Fished: 5-28-01
Location: Sandy Hook-Raritan Bay
Fishing Method: Drift-Chunk
Specie: Fluke
Size: 8-18.5 Inchs
Bait or Lure: Spearing,Killies,Clam Bellies
Water Depth: 12-45 Ft
Water Temp.:
Information : Did a marathon Monday, fishing all 3 trips aboard the Teal.On the morning fluke trip,we started drifting just inside the hok and worked our way a round the tip to the outside on various drifts-none producing any significant bitye although some keepers and shorts were boated.A few more drifts on the Knoll east of the ammo pier and the Atantic Highlands flats were about the same-never producing much of a bite.I ended this trip with just 2 short fluke. The afternoon trip started pretty much the same with a few more keepers coming over the rail at drifts on the Leonardo Flats and the Earle Channel. We finally got into a very good bite of flatties on the Belford flats and keepers were coming over the rail 4 and 5 at a time. Most of these flukew ere in the 17-18 inch class in addition to alot of 15.75s.Best bait was either a single or double spearing.I ended this trip with four keepers ( 16,16.5,17 and 18.5 )out of 8 fluke boated. To illustrate the difference between the morning and afternoon--there were over 5 buckets of racks on the afternoon trip as opposed to only a half on the morning. The evening striper trip I would also classify as slow. After two drops along the edge of the Swash Channel and only 1 slot bass to show for the effort,we moved off Keansburg where a slow pick of mostly short bass and slot bass were taken.Pool was split between a pair of 28 inchers.Best I could muster up ws a 21.5 inch striper.

Making 3 drops on wrecks 25 miles southeast of Manasquan Inlet the bite was non stop. The fish jumped all over the Clam baits and they were all large with the heaviest tipping the scale at 5 lbs. Information : Trolled Flynns Knoll at 6:30 AM with my buddy Mike Sheehan. I did not read a lot of fish at all but we managed to pick up a slot fish, and we were bitten off by some bluefish. Trolled Between the channels and again not many readings; seems like the fish are scattered with all the bad weather. Next we went up onto the Keansburg flats to chunk but struck out there. We made a last ditch effort at the Oceanic Bridge bunker chunkin to no avail(I did see some guys catching Fluke). All in all we worked real hard for one stinkin slot fish but we had fun and the weather was nice.

Drifted in all depths of water for Fluke, caught only one 6" fish and a small blue; tried trolling for anything and everything without any hits. Moved inside where the river was a nightmare, you would think it was July 4th. Moved to the top of the bay to look for some weakfish, too much traffic. Ended up back at the dock at 1:00 PM. Look forward to getting my boat out there next week, time permitting. I hope to see the water warm up and we can start getting some offshore fishing for shark and tuna. Tight lines to all.....

Angler Name : fred hepper
E-Mail : hep@njlenders.com
Boat Name: branch office
Date Fished: 5/28/01
Location: reach/knoll/nudie beach/upper raritan
Fishing Method: troll - drift
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 28
Bait or Lure: bunker spoon
Water Depth: 30
Water Temp.: 61
Information : Started @ 7:00 am on the reach between 19 & 25 can. Lots of bunker, but our usual success of trolling right through them didn't produce. I was surprised to find so much bunker, but no blues or stripers underneath them. We were trolling stretch 25's and bunker spoons. Moved to Flynn's Knoll. Lots of boats chunking, but I saw mostly blue fish being pulled. Continued to troll the bunkler spoon & 25 plug. Picked up one 28" bass. Moved up on the Sandy Hook beach on the on the outside, drifted 4 small fluke & 2 keeper fluke. Both on squid. All in all I think the fish need to re-group after 8 days of rough weather. Keep an eye on the upper bay bunker mass. This could draw some big fish in once things set up. Also.... One fellow in my marina did well @ the triangle in the very upper bay for fluke. 10 keepers!

Boat Name: Jusr Reelin 2
Date Fished: Monday 5/28/01
Location: Flynn's Knoll
Fishing Method: chunking
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: to 21lbs.
Bait or Lure: clam bellies
Water Depth: 19ft
Water Temp.: 60
Information : What started out as a warm sunny morning ended up overcast and windy. We had our friend Alan Ketner (his boat is just not fish ready yet!) out for a morning of chunking bass with clams. Clams are the worst smelling bait there is, but bass love it. The morning started out as a slow pick with shorts and two slot fish. At 10:30 we moved to a favorite spot and after we set the anchor had the baits in the water for no more than 5 minutes, Alan had a run off with a big bass which we boated after a 20 minute fight on light tackle. The bass weighed 21lbs. back at the dock. All in all we caught 13 bass - kept 4 - and that doesn't include the 3 we lost. Not too bad for a morning bite. Tight Lines!

I had never caught a Fluke much over 2LBs prior to this beast!! I was very pleased!!! Funny how it only takes one really nice fish to turn a bad day to good!!

Boat Name: White Rhino
Date Fished: 5/27
Location: Harvey Cedars Lump, Barnegat Sod Banks, Barnegat Inlet
Fishing Method: Various
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: see report...
Bait or Lure: various
Water Depth: too deep or too shallow?
Water Temp.: too warm or too cold?
Information : We ran the Rhino hard on Sunday, trying to put together any kind of day at all... Once the fog burned off the weather was at least nice. We started in the soup at the sod banks, several drifts, with clam and plugs - nothing. Stopped next at the tip of the jetty, a short striper and a few misses, snagged a few herring, nothing, hits all came on yellow plugs. Went to Harvey Cedars, a few short fluke and the junkfish grand slam -- sharks, skates, robins, blues, clamshells, boots -- you get the idea. Almost got rammed by some giant private yacht plowing through the fog - left for home. Drifted the inlet again on the way back in, nothing again. Went home with cold bait and cold drinks -- bait and soda was all that was in the box! JJ Hughes rocked - producing virtually all of the fish, despite having nothing to show for it at supper, he was at least on all day... Capt Howie put a few shorts on the board and I failed to contribute even a junk fish -- If there's a good day to not catch 'em, I hope I had mine for the season... I know it's never a wasted day if your lines are wet, but this one came close. Burgers and beers sound good in retrospect. We'll get 'em this week. Very light on bookings this week, so we'll be at the beach looking for a cow before they go splitski! See ya out there - GonZo

Fishing Method: Drift-Anchor
Specie: Fluke
Size: 7-17 Inchs
Bait or Lure: Squid,spearing,clam bellies
Water Depth: 15-45 Feet
Water Temp.:
Information : Began the day taking the afternoon fluke trip aboard the Teal.First drift was slightlysouth of the ammo pier-- a few flatties were taken here, inckuding a short for myself.A move to the red side of the Reach went fishless. We finally found them on a drift that took us from just inside the Hook to the #13 buoy of SHC.A decent bite developed with a 60% short to 40% keeper ratio.I ended up with 3 keepers-a pair of 17s and a 16.5 out of 11.Two anglers limited out of 10 with everyone catching enough for dinner.
Stayed aboard for the evening striper tripFirst stop was the Knoll and I boated a 28 inch bass wiothing the first 10 minutes. However a bite never truely developed here as only a slot and a short were taken.A move back into Raritan Bay off Keansburg proved more fruitful.Once again I was into a striper within minutes of dropping the anchor. This turned out to be a plump 32 incher. The majority of the bass were in the slot limit with a scattering of 28'+bass thrown in.Althought I didn't catch anymore stripers,I added a bluefish in the 8-10 pound class.Pool winner was a 37 incher-a few midsized blues were also caught as well as 2 weakfish of @ 5 and 8 pound respectively.

Size: Taylor
Bait or Lure: Mackeral Strips, chicken
Water Depth: 15-20
Water Temp.: 65
Information : Ashamed to admit that I splashed her late this year and it was my first trip. Problems with work. Got to get my priorities set right. But, after battling fog to navigate a new inlet this year, the fog blew off, the sun came out strong, and it was a beautiful day on the bay. Did not even get a bite or mark fish or bait at last year's old reliable honey hole ... the Squirrel's nest so we made the long run down to the Bug Light area on rumor of a weakfish bite. Picked a couple taylor blues there and we fell victim to all the 3ft dogfish you wanted. We were also treated to skates. We were hoping for a sea robin or oyster cracker to round out the Delaware Bay trashfish slam, but it was not to be. All in all, it was a georgeous day, the boat ran great, and it sure beat a day at work!!

Location: Monmouth Beach
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 41.5 Pounds
Bait or Lure: umbrella rigs
Water Depth: 40
Water Temp.: 60
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and Joe Dalik had their best trip of the year on Thursday. The Jeff Veith charter from Randolph, NJ decided to give the day a shot despite the rough conditions and the fact that the charter consisted of Jeff, Larry Travaglia who brought along their 12 year old sons Rich Veith and L.J. Travaglia. As it turned out the seas were no problem for this crew. Working off of Monmouth Beach with umbrella rigs, red and black again proving the most productive, it appears that big Bass have been turned on by the constant easterly winds. Within an two hours we were limited out with bass over 30 inches including bonus fish and one slot fish. We ended the day releasing another 17 bass, 15 of which were over 35 inches. The highlights of the trip included the boating of 5 Stripers over 40 inches, including bass of 23, 25, 26, and 28 pounds, the release of 3 Stripers over 40 inches including a 30-pounder and the capture by L.J. Travaglia (age 12) of a beautiful 48 inch 41.5-pound Cow.

Information : Fed up with sitting at the dock, Captain Phil Dulanie and Joe Dalik took the Pete Schrear charter from Warren, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Wednesday. In addition, the trip represented the last hours of freedom for Petes brother Steve, as he will be getting married on Friday. Fighting through the 4-6 foot seas they had the umbrella rigs in the water on the Shrewsbury Rocks by 8:00 am and the Stripers were home. Getting in 2.5 hours of trolling produced 8 Bass between 34 and 39 and a few bluefish. Black and red tubes seemed to work best and the charter had all they wanted by 10:30 and we were back in the inlet by 11am.

Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 59
Information : Fished Wednesday evening in the fog with the Glenn Kallai party from Arizona, these guys opted for a beach run instead of a boat trip because of the weather - what a great decision it turned out to be. Spring tide and the rain that preceded it had the surf breaking all the way up to the dunes. It was an interesting drive, to say the least. On a tip from our friends at the Dolphin, we fished just south of A-17 - in addition to being one of the few places on the beach that we could park, it turned out to be productive too. We set up in the fog as close to the water as we could get and casted clams on hi-los and fishfinders. Within minutes, all of the rods were on. We were blitzed for almost 2 hours with a striper on every cast. All of the fish were keeper size with the biggest being 36". I logged in 16 fish with only 3 run-offs, not bad for guys from the desert... Because there was no moon and a very thick fog, we had the whole beach to ourselves. It was a fantastic trip with some real die hards. I look forward to them coming back and to many more nights like Wednesday. Tight lines! GonZo

Water Depth: surf
Water Temp.: almost 60
Information : The rain shut down the weakfishing as the salinity instantly left the water. My trip for the night backed out so I stopped at the Dolphin to check in with the fellas. They said that the weather was keeping people off the beach, but the guys who went were catching some fish. I took 1/2 dozen clams and stood out there cold and wet for 2 hrs. All of the action came in a 15 or 20 minute blitz at dead slack tide (nothing makes sense to me anymore...) Caught 2 fish and lost one -- I had three fish on three poles at the same time, and I was alone -- both were 25 or 26 inchers, and both were returned to their home. stayed for another 1/2 hr and packed up rods as they came in without bait. Weather appears as if it will approve for the long weekend. I'm cancelling my trip tonight due to crappola weather, but I hope to be back on the beach tomorrow, we're booked pretty solid this weekend with two fluke trips and a night flats trip on Monday for weaks and stripers. Tight lines - GonZo

Information : I was champing at the bit to get out fishing with the new, used boat, so between the weather forecast, work and getting the boat seaworthy, I decided it had to be Saturday night. Started fishing at the beginning of the outgoing tide, at about 8:30PM, across from the NJ Marine Police Station. Fish were tailing the surface all around. The best we could do was four sea robins. The tide flow was rather slow, so we went down to the Highlands bridge. No luck there at all. The other boat and the bridge fishermen got nothing. The winds picked up and it got colder, thank god for the new top and curtains. At 3:00AM, my son and I decided to call it quits and head back to the dock. Tight lines and screaming reels (I miss them)!!!

Information : The Bounty Hunter had the Fred Alholm charter on board. Running up to Raritan Bay we encountered one of our slowest days of the Striper season. The Stripers had scattered and the Bluefish had moved in. Working the bay from the Reach to the Knoll all we could show for our effort was 2 Striped Bass and a dozen Bluefish, another 2 dozen Bluefish were released.

Size: Up to 43"
Bait or Lure: Spoons
Water Depth: 25 to 30 Ft.
Water Temp.: 60 Degrees
Information : The Bounty Hunter toughed it out in a rough Northeast blow to get to Raritan Bay. The bumps were well worth it for the Tom Headley charter. Rounding the tip of Sandy Hook we received a call from friend Pete Wagner, Capt. of the charter boat Hyper Striper that the Bass were in a feeding frenzy. Having enjoyed limit catches on most of our recent trips we wondered how good could it be? We found out quickly when the first Spoon hit the water. A 40" fish weighing 28lbs. hit the deck followed by another at 29lbs. The bite continued for 2 hours and we could not catch a Bass under 34". The last 2 Bass to go into the fish box measured 40" & 43" and weighed 30 & 31lbs. We threw back at least 25 Stripers over 34" in an attempt to catch a slot fish but this was the day of "Big Fish" only. When the action subsided Pete & I agreed that this was a day to remember. I would like to thank Pete for the call. It pays to have friends in the Bay.

Size: various
Bait or Lure: fin-s, slat shaker, zoom (pink)
Water Depth: 8 feet +/- a foot or so
Water Temp.: almost 60
Information : Capt Howie had the Rhino out again on Tuesday night fishing the flats along the ICW in the Forked River area. There were very heavy winds but Capt Howie put the fellas on fish after trying a few different holes. BB still seems to be the center of the action with most success coming to the north this time between BB and the 40 markers. Fishing pink plastic produced a few weakies including a 30 incher, some medium blues and some small stripers. Capt Howie even got a double with a Weak on a fin-s and a blue on the teaser 20 inches apart -- a 12 lb double-header! GonZo guided Preston Walls of Princeton out on the beach to try some night fishing on the bulkhead on the North side of the inlet. We casted and reeled for three hours, only producing 1 striper. He came on light tackle and a fin-s, so the fight was fantastic. We took some photos and let him go. There was no wind and it was a beautiful night, the water in the inlet is warming up though and we could start seeing more weaks soon. Tight lines - GonZo

Location: Barnegat Bay
Fishing Method: livelining
Specie: Bluefish
Size: up to 10lbs
Bait or Lure: Herring
Water Depth: various
Water Temp.: 56+
Information : Capt Howie Fried and JJ Hughes fished early Saturday morning. Due to Mother's day weekend obligation, the Rhino's crew opted out of a Barnegat Ridge Fluke run and the fellas picked up some live herring to try and find some stripers. The blues were intercepting anything that hit the water and the Rhino made one on its annual donations to Neptune ($2.50 a herring to feed bluefish?) Blues are fun though, the boys played catch and release with scrappy slammers as big as 10lbs and quit when they'd eaten all of the precious herring. Capt Howie tried numerous spots inside the bay, at the sod banks, a few channel mouths and in and at the tip of the inlet but the blues were everywhere. The bass are still on the beach on clams, we'll fire up the trucks this week for some bassing and plan to chase some flatties this weekend? How was the fluking? Tight lines - GonZo

Only kept 3 Weakies as these are our future catches. One 20" Fluke hit the Fin-S dragged slow on the bottom. Pink Fin-S and Sandworms were the ticket for the Weakies. Blues were scattered and hit anything cranked or trolled fast, they are aggressive and a heck of a lot of fun on ultra-light or fly. Give it a try and go light!! Happy Mother's Day!

Boat Name: Bounty Hunter
Date Fished: 05/11/2001
Location: Inshore wrecks
Fishing Method: Bottom
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: Up to 3lbs.
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 90 Ft.
Water Temp.: 57 Degrees
Information : The Bounty Hunter made another attempt at locating the Seabass with the John Dubrowsky charter. Stopping on 5 wrecks up to 25 miles from Manasquan Inlet only proved to be an effort in futility. Our hopes were high after pulling 3 dozen fish off our first spot. However it became obvious that the fish were not about to cooperate when the next 4 wrecks only gave up a handfull of fish. We will wait another week before giving it another try. In the meantime we'll stick with the Stripers.

Boat Name:
Date Fished: 5-11-01
Location: Port Monmouth Pier
Fishing Method: Surf
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 25 Inchs
Bait or Lure: Sandworms-fresh bunker
Water Depth: 2-12 Feet
Water Temp.:
Information : An ideal night both weather wise & fishing wise.Arrived @6:40PM,just after dead low.had my first action within 15 minutes.Sandworms yielded a 25 inch striper with a fresh bunker chunk decked a 2 pound blue. From there on it was all bluefish action, mainly on sandworms.Just before sundown a few guys got into some surface plug action with blues in the 1-3 pound class. After sunset ALOT of bait moved in--big bunkers and bay anchovies. The bunkers were so thick that they would actually become entangled in your fishing line and you'd be able to real in a fresh live bunker. Some guys were blind casting snag hooks and loading up on bunkers. The bay anchovies were right up in the wash and I actually witnessed a 30 inch + bass cruising in and out of the shadow line gorging on them in less than 2 feet of water.Unfortunately,I couldn't entice this fish to hit a small bucktail.I left about 10:40PM with a total of 10 blues in the 1-3 pound class and 1 25 inch striper.
