The last drop of the day was the one we were looking for the immediate action with singles and doubles as soon as the bait hit the bottom and within 45-60 minutes,Anthony,Ray and myself filled the barrel. Location: south side Raritan Bay
Fishing Method: drift/bottom fishing
Specie: Fluke
Size: 4 fat keepers
Bait or Lure: buckhead w/squid .. squid & killy
Water Depth: 14 to 16 feet
Water Temp.:
Information : Put in at 7AM. Water was a tad choppy all morning, but laid down nicely when the sun retreated later on. Quick drifts with a few flatties each pass. Lots of fun and great to be pulling up fluke this early, but most were undersized in length. Brought home 4 beauties including a 5 and a half pounder. Had a ball with some lone cocktail blues that surprised us here and there throughout the day. Followed a sizeable school of foot-long bunker hoping for some more blues action. Didn't get any. Didn't even see any. Thankfully, only one robin all day, but was a monster that made us all laugh. Would've been great to land a flattie that big! Missed all the great weakies from last Sunday. Hope they'll be back before long. Bottom line: fluke still spotty, but the occasional blue makes up for it. Good fishing to you all.

Location: wrecks outside Barnegat Inlet
Fishing Method: spear
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: 3 pounds
Bait or Lure:
Water Depth: 20 to 50 ft
Water Temp.:
Information : I haven't filled out a report for a while so I will try to fit several outings in. We dove on several wrecks outside Barnegat Inlet on Sat and saw lots of small and medium sized Blackfish and Seabass on the wrecks. The largest Seabass was about 3.25 lbs and the bigest Blackfish was about 5lbs. The seabass seem to be in pretty solid but I think we have to wait a while for the larger Blackfish to come in close. Just in time for the one fish limit. Well most of the bigger blackfish I saw were full of eggs anyway so I would not have taken them. One interesting note, There was a line of brown water moving south at the rate of about 2 knots. It really ruined the visibility and the stiff current made it difficult to swim to the wreck. Sunday my dad and I went out of Manasquan Inlet for fluke. We caught several shorts as well as the ever present sea robins on killies and Mackrel strips. We had fun but did not catch nearly as many fish as we wanted to. I wonder if the discolored water may have made the fishing a little tougher.

The heavy holiday traffic soon put an end to the fishing. So we decided to finish out the day wreckfishing for Seabass. Jason was the first to draw action within 10 minutes of setting up with a 15 3/4 inch "over the rail & into the pail " or in the case the cooler. This was oon followed by his second fluke of the day,a 14 inch throwback.next to get the attentionof the fluke was my daughter Jordanne who put another 2 shorts over the rail & back into the bay.And last but not least was dad rounding out the field with a 16 incher. Then the action seemed to die as another 2 hours yielded no bites. However,as we were packing up it seemed that action with cocktail blues in the 1-3 pound class was picking up.

Size: to 25 lbs
Bait or Lure: Manns & Shad Rigs
Water Depth: 8-50
Water Temp.: 59
Information : What a trip! Again and again I say it, the last couple of years have been the best Striper fishery I can remember! We trolled Manns and Shad Rigs on mono and absolutely mauled 'em! The biggest problem we had was the bluefish eating the tails off the shad rigs, but it was worth it! We scored a double header of two keepers (32") on one shad rig, and it felt like there was a shark on the other end! Toughest part was filling the "slot fish" bag limit...there is just too many "big ones"!

This thing jumped clear out of the water with the Mann 25 in it's mouth TWICE! It was a long run home & a late cleaning at the dock but boy were we proud!

We had the fishbox filled to capacity by noon and we called it a day. The larger Seabass, and there were plenty of them, ranged from 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 lbs. Getting a late start and arriving on the grounds at 8:30 no one seemed to have had a Bass yet. Trolling in 15-20 feet of water the Bass eventually turned on but it was not limit type fishing we have been experiencing. Working the area hard all day produced Bass of 12, 15 and 20 pounds in addition to 4 slot limit Stripers and a couple dozen Blues. Bunker Spoons seemed to provide the best action.

A friend of mine who was also there did a good number on the fluke by using a purple worm and squid strip combo on a slow retrieve.

Information : Part one of the day was spent on the Capt John in search of fluke.Myself along with Ray,Tim & Kathy all had hopes of at least putting 3-4 fluke on ice.Our frist few drifts were on the ledges between the Bug Light & the Coast Guard Station-most of the larger fluke and probably the majority of the keepers came from here.We next made a few drifts near the rips, here we had the pleasant ( or unpleasant-depending on your point of view )of coming across of school of bluefish in the 2-4 pound class. Some fluke both keepers & shorts were also taken here.next few areas such as off the beach,Sandy Hok Channel or off the ammo pier were either very slow or was turbo sea robin fishing ( Sandy Hook Channel ). I ended the day of the Capt John with only 2 short fluke,1 bluefish and alot of sea robins to my name. Ray & Kathy each got a keeper fluke,as well as Ray & Tim taking a bluefish apiece along with numerous shorts & sea robins. Part two of the day was spent on the Spy House Pier in Port Monmouth.Upon setting up we had immediate action with bluefish. I concentrated on catching bluefish by setting up 2 rods with bunker chunks, while Tim & Kathy set up 1 rod each for bluefish & fluke.Over the course of the next few hours we caught about 25 bluefish in 2-4 pound class with a few pushing 6.Bewteen Tim & Kathy, they put an additional 5 keeper fluke on ice up to 19 inchs, while losing another 3 keepers trying to wing them over the pier railing.

Information : In the military, just got back to Ohio from a wonderful leave in NJ. Brothers Larry, Kevin, and my best friend and soon to be spouse Janie spent five hours on 9 May trolling shad color stretch baits in Raritan Bay from the 9 and 10 bouy on out to Flynn's Knoll. Had a fantastic day! Had a few shorts but most were keeper fish ....... in no time at all we had seven fish in the boat. Blues were also cought but released. 10 May was bad ....... weather didn't cooperate, windy and on and off showers. 11 May produced five more keeper fish with a 25 pound hog added to the fish well. 12 May, our final day fishing produced just three keeper fish and a number of throw backs. Had to fight through the blues to get to the bass, no complaints, bass are better eating by far. Had to leave on the 13th but will be back in NJ waters on the 26th, hopefully the fluke and weaks will be cooperative. Till then ...... tight lines.

Information : First trip of the year for me onthe Freddy C. There was a decent Pick of Blues and Bass, but only after dark. Early evening worming was slow. Not much tide movement all night, held bottom with 2 oz. Will be having bass on the barby today. Got one 8 pounder all night. Had fun, Two little guys ( 8 or 9 years old)on the boat had a blast. Each had multiple hook-ups. One landed a nice 7 pound weakfish and the other managed to land a keeper bass after some fanfare and fine teamwork .

Went out at 6:30 AM came back in at 1:30 PM. Also looks like it may be a very good fluke year if everything stays the same. Reported last thursday no action but boy did it change on tuesday. Baked several blues last night., Not as oily as in the past and if you cook it right you will enjoy a good fish dinner. The small blues do cook up great if you spend a little time with them, try it. Date Fished: 5/9/00
Location: 25 & 40 Mile Wrecks
Fishing Method: Bottom Fishing
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: up to 5 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 110-150 ft.
Water Temp.: 54 degrees
Information : The Bounty Hunter had the John Poluchuck charter on board for a day of Wreckfishing. Starting on our first wreck 40 miles to the east of Manasquan Inlet in 150 ft. of water the 25 knot Southwest winds along with the 6 ft. seas made for tough fishing conditions. However, it did not stop the large Ling, up to 5 lbs. from biting. After 2 hours of non stop action the fishbox was half full. Pulling our 2 anchors and moving back into 110 ft. of water, the second wreck offered a continuous bite of Jumbo Seabass up to 5 lbs. This allowed us to fill the fishbox to overflowing within 1 l/2 hours of fishing. Conditions did not improve thru the day as the 5 to 6 foot seas continued for the entire ride back to Manasquan Inlet.

Water Depth: 50-70 feet
Water Temp.: 56
Information : Daily News says, "best seabass fishing in years" - yea right! Got to the dock at 5:45 am to get my favorite spot on the boat. 71 other people belived the hype as well. Weather was great although could of used a bit of wind to help drif. Capt. Mike decided to hit the inshore wrecks instead of taking the three hour ride - he felt the deeper wrecks had been pounded enough and that good numbers of seabass would be difficult to produce considering the full boat he had. Stayed inshore and picked for mosst of the day. Some spots were better than other with only certain locations on the boat catching at a time. As usual Capt. Mike tried his best and moved around tot try to get a few fish in everybody's box. My good friend Terry the Mate and Brad were on the ball as always. Ended up with 15 between my brotther and I. Don't know if I missed it or was in the wrong place on the wrong day. At any rate it was a beatiful day and a good time on an excellemt boat. Keep the repots comming.

We found a few more patches and landed a half a dozen blues and two keeper stripped bass. With dinner in the box we decided to go home. All in all it was a very good day! Boat Name: Bounty Hunter
Date Fished: 5/3/00
Location: Mid Range Wrecks
Fishing Method: Bottom Fishing
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: 2 to 5 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 120 ft.
Water Temp.: 49 degrees
Information : The Bounty Hunter out of Clarks Landing Marina had the Frank Lukenda charter on board and the Ling and Jumbo Seabass did not disappoint us. Starting in 150 ft. of 49 degree water we had steady action with Ling in the 2 to 6 lb. class. After filling 1/2 a fishbox we moved into 2 wrecks in 120 ft. of water. The first only yielded a slow pick, however the second was loaded with Jumbo Seabass up to 5 lbs. and enabled us to quickly fill the fishbox. As the 25 knot Southwest winds came on in the afternoon the conditions began to deteriorate so we called it a day.

Location: sandy hook
Fishing Method: surf
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 19 to 25 inches
Bait or Lure: sand worms
Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 51 degrees
Information : well... i caught my first four stripers for the 2000 season. what a great day! all on sand worms too! it was quite a bizarre pattern on how i caught them. let me elaborate quickly.... since it is a full moon tonight i figured that my chances are slim that i would catch anything.... on my way i heard on my NOAA radio that at the ambrose tower, the water temp. was 51 degrees... i figured that the temp. was on my side.... right? anyway i started fishing at 3 pm and got my first bite at 4 pm. i was a little too quick on the hook set; although i thought i was getting hits by winter flounder!!! i figured i would let it go after repeated bites and see what would have happen.... BAM!!! THE 25 INCHER HIT!! and so on... but here is the thing... everytime i would bait up and re-cast... just as i set the rod in the sand peg, the pole would go! so... everything 15 minutes that pasted without a bite... i would re-cast in the same spot... or a different spot for that matter and BAM! another short striper! it seemed that they came to the splash sound and instantly hit the sand worm! also... I CASTED WAY OUT! AS FAR AS I COULD TO! i figured with the full moon.... that was the only chance i had! and it paid off too! keep this in mind for the next time there is a full moon.. i hope i helped some of you out..... tight lines...

VERY SLOW FISHING GUYS,,,I DID MANAGE TO TIE FOR HIGH HOOK WITH 5 FAT FISH, BUT IT WAS A CHALLENGE AND IT SEEMS TO BE GETTING HARDER TO GET THE FISH CHEWING,,,THOUGH I REALLY MUST SAY THERE WERE AT LEAST 3 TIMES AS MANY BOATS IN THE AREA THEN THE DAY BEFORE WHICH AMOUNTS TO ALOT OF CHUM IN THE WATER, THE FISH I CAUGHT HAD FULL BELLIES AND REALLY HAD NO BUSINESS EATING ANYMORE, BUT I SOLVED THAT PROBLEM FOR THEM,,LOL,,,,,,,ANYWAY BY THE END OF THE MORNING THE FLEET WAS STARTING TO MOVE FURTHER AND FURTHER FROM THE PIER AND MORE TOWARDS SANDY HOOK, ALSO THERE WERE A FEW NY HEAD BOATS MIXED INTO THE FLEET SO THE FISHING CAN'T BE THAT GREAT ON THE NY SIDE IF THERE WERE MAKING THAT LONG RUN, BEST ADVICE IS TO CHUM HEAVILY WITH CLAMS CHUM AND TO USE A VERY AGRRESIVE BOUNCE ON THE SINKER, GOOD LUCK TO ALL,, WILL START FLUKING ON SUNDAY.........
