However, we caught a nice 18 inch keeper along with a 16 incher and some throwbacks. I also caught a very strange fish which my brother nor I could identify and was wondering if anyone has any idea as to what species if might have been. The fish was brown on top with a white belly and was about 3 1/2 feet long and easily weighed 20 to 25 lbs. It had a very percular flat head with a very wide mouth which resembled that of a catfish but with no whiskers. It also has two set of wings with and a tail similar in structure to a shark with two similar dorsal fins and shark-like tail. I have video and still pictures of it but would like to know what this creature was. Let me also add it was very ugly.

Angler Name : Harry Tanghare
E-Mail : tanghare.erols.com
Boat Name: DJ's
Date Fished: June 24th
Location: Baltimore/Wilmington Canyons
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Big-Eye Tuna
Size: 50 - 60 lbs
Bait or Lure: Green Machines with birds
Water Depth: 600 - 1100 fathoms
Water Temp.: 63.5 - 68.3
Information : We took our chances on an early run to the canyons out of Cape May and we were richly rewarding with excellent weather, smooth seas and plenty of action. We had purchased a temperature fax which indicated 67 degree water at the tip of the Baltimore Canyon so we set our course for there. Unfortunately, when we arrived at 7:30 am the water temp was only 61.5 degrees so we set a new course for the 500 fathom line in hopes of finding the warmer weather. Again, we were disappointed by 62 degree water with no signs of life. Keeping in mind we were in a 26 foot center consel, we decided to put out the lures and troll towards the 1100 fathom line to conserve fuel. Within 2 or 3 miles of the 1000 fathom line the water temperature started to increase gradually with a much better color to the water. We started to see massive schools of dolphins and dozen or so whales as well as a large sunfish which gave us some hope. Soon we had our first knockdown followed shortly thereafter by a double header of juvenile big eye tuna which we released to fight another day. We then changed or course north along the 1000 - 1100 fathom line where the water temp was up to 65 - 66 degrees. We noticed a boil on the water which we thought contained some tuna. At first there was not a hookup but within a 100 yards from the spot we had a double header of some larger tuna. We also noticed that the school was following the two tuna we had hooked up and soon had a whole school under the boat. There was only two of us on the boat but we managed to boat both fish with one being a 50 - 55 lb big eye and the other a large 61 lb longfin or albecore. A second pass resulted in another big eye similar in size to the last one. After this, we decided to troll N/NE toward the back end of the Wilmington but staying in the deep. We came across schools of tuna on the surface and had single and double hookups the rest of the day. The last fish we caught was at the 600 fathom line in the Wilmington where the water temp had reached 68.

Date Fished: Sunday, June 22, 1997
Location: Mussel Beds at 14' Light
Fishing Method: Drifting
Specie: Fluke
Size: 13"-18"
Bait or Lure: Minnows/Squid or Flounder Belly
Water Depth: 35'-40'
Water Temp.: 68 Degrees
Information : The Adam Bomb was treated to a fair day of fishing today. Fishing with my father and friend, we boated two keeper Flounder amidst many, many shorts. We had a nice Weakfish which was mixed in with many throwbacks. We were drifting the mussel beds located a bit south of 14' Light. When you are drifting, you will repeatedly snag the bottom and once in a while pull up a chunk, this is what you want, because when this isn't happening, you aren't on the structure which therefore generally means, no fish. The highlight, although not a happy one, of the day, was when my father fought an estimated six pound Flounder to the boat and was lost because our net popped out of a rod holder and into the water on the way out without anyone noticing. It was a morbid experience, but an educational one at that as I came to the realization, after losing the fish, that I could have gaffed him!!!

Information : The John Reilly charter from Patriot Roofing spent Wednesday trolling stripers off Monmount Beach on what turned out to be a cold and foggy day but the crew of the Canyon Runner was able to hang a few nice bass to salvage the day. With only two people making up the total of the charter there was enough crancking of the handle to keep everyone busy despite the fact that the bass, while aboundant as evident by the fish finder, were not cooperating. However, once we changed over from unbrella rigs to bunker spoons a nice 25 pound Striper was put in the boat, along with a couple of shorts and bluefish. Water Temp.: 62
Information : Bluefishing was very good. We were anchored and chumming. At first the blues were biting mostly on jigs. After a half hour they began to bite on bait also. Limit catches were boated by almost everyone on board. Night fishing has also been very good. On the night trips bait fishing is the most effective method.

Fishing Method: Chumming
Specie: Blue Shark
Size: 50 to 175 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Bluefish
Water Depth: 150' to 240'
Water Temp.: 60.9
Information : The Crew of the Canyon Runner fished the second day of the Mako Mania tournament with the Bill Wrede charter to catch another 12 bluesharks. In two days of fishing the Wrede charter caught and released 27 bluesharks and fought and lost 10 others. Unfortunately, despite the excellant shark fishing, no mako shark bite our baits. The highlight of the day however, was when the crew baited a 75lb blueshark on light tackle and handed the rod to Bill Wrede's five year old son Brian. Father held the pole and son reeled in the shark which was tagged and released. Not a bad way to spend Father's Day.

Fishing Method: Chumming and Chunking
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 5-12lbs.
Bait or Lure: Bunker chunks
Water Depth: 100-150
Water Temp.: 59-61
Information : I went out Saturday night, June 14 aboard the Belmar based party boat NightHawk. The weather conditions were ideal except for the lack of a stiff wind. The Captain headed out to the Mud Hole along with all the other boats fishing that night. The first stop was within yards of the other boats. The Captain anchored and within seconds I had the first fish on the boat. It was a 6lb. bluefish. Then I had the second fish on but lost it. The rest of the fishermen started hooking up and there was about 18 fish on the boat in about 30 minutes. Then it slowed. With no drift, the bait was not enticing any fish and in fact was staying too close to the boat and sinking out of the schools of fish who were up near the top feeding. The Captain made a move away from the fleet and started drifting to help offset the lack of wind. No sooner did the boat start drifting when all heck broke loose. Everyone started hooking up with fish. All fish were 5-12 lbs. with the pool winner going to a guy who was fishing for the first time (Congratulations even though he beat me out by ounces). All said and done, the Captain did a great job making sure we caught fish and I had a great night and caught my share of fish. Thanks to the crew who also made sure they got the fish on the boat.

Fishing Method: Chumming
Specie: Blue Shark
Size: 75 to 250 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Bluefish
Water Depth: 150' to 240'
Water Temp.: 60.4
Information : The Canyon Runner, with Captains Phil Dulanie and Wayne Bushnell at the helm, fished the first day of the Greater Point Pleasant Charterboat Association Mako Mania tournament with the Bill Wrede charter 55 miles southeast of Manasquan at the southern end of the triple wrecks, catching and releaseing 15 bluesharks. Of the 15 sharks caught, only 2 were under 100 pounds. The biggest blueshark was also the last of the day and was 10 feet long weighing approximately 250 pounds. When it came to the boat it had 2 hooks in its mouth, including ours, and one in its side. The crew of the Canyon Runner was able to release this monster blueshark, as well as all the other sharks caught, after removing all the hooks. The only damper on the day was that out of 140 boats fishing the Mako Mania tournament on day one, only 2 caught a mako shark. However, the bluesharks provided non-stop action for everyone.
