FISHING REPORTS FOR JUNE 2006

NAUTICALNET MARINE CHARTERS

Moonshadow Sportfishing

Angler Name : Joe
E-Mail : Jobsteer@aol.com
Boat Name: Yankee Bean
Date Fished: 6-30-67
Location: 2 miles off Seaside Piers
Fishing Method: Live Linning Bunker
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: Biggys
Bait or Lure: Snagged Bunker
Water Depth: 45
Water Temp.: 65
Information : After snagging bunker for 2hours, had nothing to show except for destroyed terminal tackle due too slammer blues. Just when the order for lines up was given, had a whopper of a run off. After 5 minutes of play, and a totally destroyed fish net that buckled under the weight of the monster, three men finally managed to pull over the side a 45lbs line sidder. Biggest fish boated in the Yankee Bean this Spring. Friday night and the beaches are loaded with bunker, however, that shouldnt last for long as the weekenders are sure to scatter them. Back at it on Monday evening.

Angler Name : Mike Fuschetti
E-Mail : captpaul@bountyhuntercharters.com
Boat Name: Bounty Hunter
Date Fished: 06/30/2006
Location: Inshore Wrecks
Fishing Method: Bottom Fishing
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: Up to 4 Lbs.
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 90 Ft.
Water Temp.: 62 Degrees
Information : The Mike Fuschetti charter was on board the Bounty Hunter for a day of Seabass fishing. Capt. Paul headed south and found the warmer water off Barnegat Inlet. Unfortunately we also found the Dogfish. fishing 4 drops in 90 Ft. the charter fished their way thru the endless bite of Dogfish to put over 60 Seabass up to 4 1/2 lbs. in the boat. It appears that the Dogfish problem is keeping the Seabass catches at half of what they normally would be.

Angler Name : Damien Romeo
E-Mail : info@canyonrunner.com
Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: June 30
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Overnighter
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: 150 Pounds
Bait or Lure: Canyon Runner Spreader Bars
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 71-75
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie, Capt. Mark DeBlasio, and Capt. Mark DeCabia took the Damien Romeo out to the Hudson canyon Friday morning and stopped just west of the Texas Tower as they saw a bunch of life (birds, skipjack) and trolled for an hour without a bite and so picked up and headed to the tip. The trolled the tip and then down the east wall for and hour but the water was greenish in color and as they trolled further down the wall it keep getting worse so they pulled in the lines and headed to the deep and finally found some nice fish around 7pm. From 7pm to 8:30pm they went 2 for 4 on nice yellowfin from 40-80 pounds and put a 150 pound Bluefin in the boat. All the bites came on Canyon Runner Spreader Bars with 9 inch purple/black squid accounting for all the fish except one yellowfin that ate a green Canyon Runner Mini-Mamba Bar. After they put the bluefin in the boat the charter said they had enough as those were the biggest fish they ever saw and wanted to get home early to start their holiday weekend after only 4 hours of trolling on a 24 hour overnighter. We did convince them to stay the night and ended up missing another bluefin on a mackeral set at 150 feet and came home at first light.

HILITE OF THE TRIP WAS THE EXTRA LARGE THRESHER SHARK (5-6 FOOT OF TAIL) THAT BATTERED AND ATE MY BUNKER 50 FEET FROM THE BACK OF THE BOAT.WHEN I STUCK HIM HE IMMEDIATELY SEVERED THE 40# BRAID WITH HIS TAIL LIKE IT WASN'T EVEN THERE. GOOD THING HE BROKE ME OFF OR I WOULD BE FIGHTING THE FISH. GOD BLESS AMERICA, THANK A VET FOR YOUR FREEDOM!!!!!!!

Still catching dog fish, but not as many. Tryed some trolling, and you guessed it, picked up a dog fish trolling. At least the weather was nice. Good Luck.

Bait or Lure: Squid/Sand Eels
Water Depth: 20-45 ft

Information : Capt Bernie hosted the Ed Hooyman charter from Lodi for a combination Fluke/Bluefish charter on Friday. Drifting from the Red Church to Monmouth Beach produced constant action with mostly short Fluke but the charter managed four keepers to 18". Reports indicated Bluefish were almost non exsistant on party boats and sport fishing boats so we waited till the last hour to troll on Shrewsbury Rocks. To our surprise the charter began fighting large 10-12 lb bluefish near the green can and also hooked and lost a large striper in the same area. Six large bluefish were also put on ice for the ride home.

Had some keepers right off the bat along with plenty of short fish....what a joke to call a 16 inch fish short!! Here we go, one day and I'm already pissed! Anyway, worked the beach all day, fish seemed to be right tight on the beach, 13 to 18ft of water. Once we got deeper than that, sand sharks and skates...High hook managed 7 keepers (although that is not the norm) A few other customers had 4 and 3 keepers each. One customer had 18 fish and went home with none!!! Still a very nice day....Capt.Ron

After several days of SSW winds the water temperature dropped 12 degrees. It was 54 degrees at the Inlet and 52 degrees at Seaside. Not a sign of a Bass anywhere so we headed east and fished the inshore wrecks for Seabass. We decided to take the bait to the rocks for some sun down drifting and made the right call, The fish where stacked up in one area and hungry!!! Boated 8 bass all 20lbs and over in about an hour with the largest at 30lbs, the ocean was a little snotty with the wind out of the south at 20knts, but hey, It can't be flat sea's every trip!! Size: ZERO
Bait or Lure: ZERO
Water Depth: ZERO
Water Temp.: ZERO
Information : Hearing that the weather offshore was actually nice we decided to try to sneak in a one day canyon trip on Monday with the Charles Follo charter. Unfortunately we should have stayed at the dock as we would have caught just as many tuna there. A slow ride out into the south southeast wind had them arrive at the Toms Canyon at 6:30 and they trolled from the Toms to the Hendrickson Canyon without a touch. They then trolled the 500 Fathom line south and then moved inshore to the 100 line to the Lindencohl and up on the edge to the 50 fathom line without a bite. Looks like we won't get back out again until Thursday or Friday. Hopefully something arives by then.

Water Depth: 120 FT
Water Temp.: 67
Information : For the second straight year the Surf and Offshore fishing team led by Capt. Pete Casagrande fished the second day of Mako Mania on the new 33' WorldCat. Saturday was scratched due to weather concerns, but Sunday found us screaming out to our target area at high speed as the new WorldCat ate up swells and blasted us through the rain squalls. We found good amounts of bait stacked up south and east of the fingers area. After missing two mako attacks and one nice thresher up top we managed to boat a nice 74" male that weighed 138 LBS back at the dock. Finished out of the money but had a good time and brought in the 9th largest fish in the torunament.

Specie: Fluke
Size: 14-16 1/4"
Bait or Lure: spearing/squid
Water Depth: 15-50'
Water Temp.: 59-60.5
Information : Fished with a crew of three today. Great news and bad news. The great news, lightning fast action as we boated 97 fluke in four hours. The bad news, all 97 fell short of the mark. This 16.5" size limit is ridiculous. Its a shame when you cant even bring home a single fish from a great day of fishing but you can pull up to the local seafood resturaunt and order a 14" fluke.

Boat Name: Roosters
Date Fished: 6-24-2006
Location: Sandy Hook Bay
Fishing Method: Drift
Specie: Fluke
Size: 20"
Bait or Lure: Killies and strips
Water Depth: 11' to 15'
Water Temp.:
Information : The Roosters cleared the breakwater at Atlantic Highlands Marina at seven AM this morning in the light rain onto the Sandy Hook Bay that was as flat as Farrington Lake. It was rain gear on then off all morning, got chased into the harbor near a tall ship by a passing thunderstorm once. Picked up a fat 17" Fluke as we drifted near the large ship while waiting for the squall to pass. Tom and I spent the rest of the trip working over the flats near the harbor picking up a total of eight keeper Fluke. We had the place all to ourselves except for a crabber picking up his traps. Never saw this before in this part of the bay, must be a lot of crabs this year as we picked up many Blueclaws on our fluke rigs. There were no yellow-eyed demons to bother us and only an occasional Sea Robin. Fluke season got off to a slow start this year and looks like things are improving weekly. There were not as many shorts today. I caught the biggest Fluke at 20½" and probably the most this morning. Back to the slip near noon. PETE (°_)°)

Caught what we needed and headed the the Highlands. Six boats anchored and they looked quiet. I started out livelining and then threw a clam out there to see what happened. BAM the clam did it again in minutes. 34inch boy in the boat for dinner. Stayed at the Bridge awhile longer only to bring in two Blues a Shark and one Skate. Ran back to the Reach for the incoming and hit Bug 42. Stripers hitting good for over an hour but all shorty schoolies. Sky opened up and we bolted back to the dock to call it a day.

They headed to the Husdon Canyon and stopped short on the west elbow as the spotted bluefin on the surface. A few passes produced nothing so they picked up and headed off. They set up on the troll and worked offshore to the 500 fathom tongue and finally go a bite going 3 for 4 on small yellwofin keeping 2 and releasing one. The fish took ballyhoo and nine inch Canyon Runner Rainbow squid bars. They set up right there for a night of sharking and hoping to nail some of these bluefin that have been biting at night but did not get a touch all night and instead sat in some of the thickest fog they've seen as most of the night the tips of the outriggers were out of site. The trolling in the morning was largely uneventful. They worked there way to the 100 fathom line and got their only bite of the morning which were two small yellowfin that they had to through back.

Specie: Fluke
Size: shorts to 19½"
Bait or Lure: Killies and strips
Water Depth: 11' to 15'
Water Temp.:
Information : Tom and I guided the Roosters out of our slip at the Atlantic Highlands Marina at 7:00 AM this morning and by 7:10 AM we had two keeper Fluke in the cooler. After that we picked thru about 30 shorts to come up with eight keeper Fluke by 11:30 AM. The South East corner of Sandy Hook Bay has been our favorite spot for several years and today it paid off. There were the ever-present Sea Robins and the yellow-eyed demons mixed in the catch. Fishing the last of the outgoing and the rest of the morning the incoming didn't seem to make any difference in the number of Fluke caught. The morning was cool with a cloud cover and a brisk wind that made it very comfortable to drift the area. Since changing the fuel filter in the Roosters, the engine has been running very well. This year we will have to pay close attention to the filter with this new gasoline blend. The marina now has fish cleaning stations scattered about with trash cans nearby which should help keep the harbor cleaner. The ramp fee is now $23.00, I guess they can afford some improvements. Water Depth: 1000 feet

Information : On a very rare crew trip Capts. Phil Dulanie, Mark DeCabia, Billy Rowan and crew Adam LaRosa, Mike Zajac, Brad Burgess, Mike Gallo, John Timken, Matt Hanifee, Mike Elton and Matt Hobbsheaded out to the Hudson Canyon Friday night and set up for sharking and drifted east for 6 miles picking one blue shark. Getting up on the troll for an early morning big-eye bite did not happen. However we quickly got into a nice pick of small yellowfin from shorts to 30 inches. Most of the fish in the morning were picked on small ballyhoo and 9 inch Canyon Runner Rainbow Bars. We picked away for 2 hours putting 15 fish in the boat before 7am when the bite quickly shut off we kept 7 of the 15 and released the rest. We trolled out to the deep and south but did not get another bite and turned back inshore when we got a call from Chris Baxter from the Fat Boy saying he just put a big-eye in the boat. We turned and headed in his direction and immediately got covered up with yellwofin again put a few more in the boat releasing one. We continued trolling toward Fat Boy but before we found Chris we found the big-eyes just short of him. We read a nice fish down 100 feet but did not get him to bite so turned back around and ran over him again when he decided to eat a ballyhoo trolled just in front of a spreader bar. He ate a straight Penn 50T so we could not continue forward too long and as soon as we slowed another big-eye came up on the 9" Rainbow Squid Bar but completely missed the hook. 35 minutes later the 181 Big-Eye was in the boat. The last fish of the day. We ended the trip with 19 small yellwofin keeping 10 and releasing the rest.

COULDN'T FIND IT AT FIRST BUT STARTED DRIFT CHUMMING IN THE GENERAL DIRECTION. FOUND THE BREAK AROUND 1 PM & STATRTED CATCHING BLUE SHARKS & SOME BLUEFISH. AND IT WAS NON-STOP ACTION TILL WE LEFT THE AREA. AS I TURNED THE "MIRAGE" TOWARDS THE INLET I SAW 2 MORE BLUE SHARKS ON THE SURFACE FEEDING ON THE LEFT OVER CHUM BALLS WE DROPPED IN AT THE END OF THE DAY. WOUND UP TAGGING FOUR BLUE SHARKS FROM ABOUT 60 TO 150 LBS. WHILE BREAKING OFF 4 OTHERS. ALSO HOOKED A SMALL MAKO ABOUT 20-30 LBS. BUT FLIPPED THE HOOK ON A BACKWARD JUMP OUT OF THE WATER. WEATHER WAS GREAT. HAD A NICE DRIFT & THE CHARTER WAS QUITE HAPPY WITH THE ACTION ALTHOUGH NO EDIBLE SHARKS WERE CAUGHT. I CONSIDER IT SUCCESSFUL FOR THE FIRST SHARK TRIP OF THE SEASON, BEING IT'S STILL QUITE EARLY. HOPEFULLY WE WILL GET THE "CAPE MAY" MAKO'S UP HERE IN THE NEXT WEK OR SO!

Water Depth: 1000 feet
Water Temp.: 67
Information : Captains Mark DeBlasio, Mark DeCabia and Phil Dulanie took the Phil Haun charter from Maryland out on the Canyon Runner Tuesday and headed right back out to where we had them Monday. Pulling into the area Stew from the Pez Machine called to let them know that there were some bigger tuna around as they just boated a big-eye Congratulations Stew!!! Up on the troll at 6:30am they quickly had their first bite of two double headers of yellowfin keeping 2 and releasing 2. The yellowfin ate Canyon Runner 9" Rainbow Squid and Ballyhoo. Shortly there after they read something big down 125 feet and 10 seconds later the flat exploded as a big-eye ate a ballyhoo on a blue/white Ilander. Unfortunately, they were in a sharp turn at the time and the big-eye crossed over several lines they slowed down quickly to try to get it under control but that fish eventually got cut off on the other lines on the intial run. While they had it on another big-eye came up and explode on a 9" Squid Bar but it did not find the hook. They stayed right in the same area the entire day and picked away at yellowfin up to 33 inches (about 30 pounds). Most of the bites came on Canyon Runner 9 inch Rainbow and a weighted green machine behind a bird long down the middle. However, the last bite of the day came on everything as they went 8 for 8 on these small yellowfin. They ended the day with a total of 15 yellowfin boated keeping 7 and releasing the rest.

Bait or Lure: Canyon Runner Squid Spreader Bars
Water Depth: 1000 feet
Water Temp.: 68
Information : After getting blown out of no less than 4 canyon charters so far this year the Canyon Runner finally kicked off its 2006 Canyon Season with the Richard Steer charter from Connecticut. Captains Phil Dulanie, Mark DeBalsio and Mark DeCabia decided to head off Monday morning for a one day troll leaving later than usually waiting for the wind to lay down. They decided to head to the Hudson Canyon where the latest Offshore Satellite Services chart showed some good water. Shortly after putting the lines in the water at 7:30am they boated and then released the first 2 small yellowfin of our 2006 season. The fish ate 9" Canyon Runner Rainbow Squid Bars. They continued to work the area and had another small yellowfin eat a Canyon Runner Blue/Silver Mini-Mamba bars trolled deep down the middle when something huge ate the yellowfin. It took no more than 20 seconds and the Penn 50VSW was stripped down to the spool. Mark DeCabia locked up the reel and the fish broke-off. The three very experienced Captains could not agree on what it was Phil thought huge Mako, DeBlasio thought huge Blue Marlin and DeCabia thought Giant. No matter they had no chance. They did not get another bite until around 12:30pm when they finally found a big body of yellowfin and had 3, 4 and 5 on for a couple hours. The fish mostly favored our 9” Rainbow Squid Bars but Jets were working as well. Almost all the bites came off the deeper lines on the riggers and the only bite on a flat line was when we decided to troll one of our Mini-Mambas off the long flat. The water was 67-68 degree most of the day and beautiful deep blue. In total the crew landed 23 yellowfin all right around 29-32 inches not the biggest fish but good enough to bend the rod.

Sure hope today wasn't a window into the Fluke fishing this season...I'll end up shooting myself!!!!!!! Back to the Bass tomorrow. We are Chartered again next Friday and Saturday....sorry guys, but the way things are going with weather and business I have to take the gaurenteed thing sometimes....capt.ron
