Angler Name : Anthony Romondo
E-Mail : njcharter@aol.com
Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: June 29
Location: Carteret
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-60 Pounds
Bait or Lure: Canyon Runner Custom Squid Bars
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 69
Information : After two miserable days being forced to shark fish and a charter canceling out on us Monday the Canyon Runner crew was back out were they belong – on the edge. Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Mike Zajac and Justin Nighan had the Anthony Romondo and Chris Noel charter from Manhattan and Philadelphia respectively, out to the 100-fathom line for a one day trolling trip. Starting in the area of the Carteret Canyon at 6am they put a 60-pound yellowfin in the boat before the last line was in the water. That was it until a wiggle down the edge produced a great bite from 8am to 10am when the charter boated another 23 yellowfin and one bluefin. Out of the 25 tuna boated 10 were kept and they were all nicer fish then last week averaging 40 pounds with a few closer to 60-pounds and only a couple in the 30-pound range. Out of the 15 released many were over 30 inches but the charter decided to release those as they had enough food for the table – good for them. Canyon Runner Custom squid spreader bars and blue/yellow jets produced best today and we missed at least another 10 tuna to pulled hooks and short strikes.

It was a short day for us and were back at the dock by noon, but after 3 hours of fishing we had just under 3 dozen Seabass in the boat. All the fish were a nice size with quite a few in the 3 Lb. class. Making the day more enjoyable was the fact that there were no Dogfish to be seen.

Boat Name:
Date Fished: Sunday, June 27th
Location: Triple Wrecks Area
Fishing Method: chum/drift
Specie: S-Fin Mako Shark
Size: 190#
Bait or Lure: Whole Mack/Whole Squid
Water Depth: 170-225
Water Temp.: 65
Information : Drifted North of the Haskell over a 175' - 225' dropoff without spotting a shark for 5 hours until a good mako and a jumbo blueshark found our slick at about the same time. Hooked the Mako on a "ham and eggs" flatline and after an unbelievable jumping display tied him off to the stern cleat. Saw LOADS of good bluefin cruising through our slick, but they "laughed" at every offering I tried. Also spotted several pieces of debris on the way out with triggerfish and mahi underneath despite the cold 64-66 degree water. Get out there with the cedar plugs the bluefin are there. - JMA

Specie: Bluefish
Size: 3 to 10
Bait or Lure: Ava 27
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Sunday: based on reports of Mud Hole Blues we headed out from Edgewater, NJ
to the "farms" area where we found a couple of boats including the Tampa VII anchored up with a steady pick of fish. Since we didn't have chum we decided to drift in the area and to jig AVA27's . Turned out to be the right decision. Using very light tackle we had 2 to 3 hours of good fishing with fish from three to ten pounds. We landed and released about fifteen fish , but lost as many hookups . Brian ended the day with a 12 lb fish that we had trouble getting in the net. All the fish were released. We left for home at 1:40 as the winds picked up.
All in all a good day.

Location: Elephant Trunk
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: 30"
Bait or Lure: Plastics
Water Depth: 180'
Water Temp.: 74
Information : The John Hellyer posse returned again for a day of sharking. Leaving the dock at 5:30, with the weather
forecast a bit iffy, and rain drops falling, we headed out. Glad we did! The sharks were not co-operative,
even though we had several run-offs, and had seen the beasts. So the decision was made to pull up the
shark gear and head off for the the Tuna's. We ran about 45 minutes and by that time Capt. Joe Hughes
had all the rigs changed and we set out our spread. An hour goes by and nothing. We then see some
Scallopers and headed for them. After following one of then around for an hour, and the charter wanting
to go home, we had our first hook-up. Yep, they said go home and the reel started screaming. Eventually it
ended with all 6 guys having their shots and 2 Tuna cherry's being busted. Oh, NOAA had it wrong again.
It was fabulous out there.

Size: 90 to 150 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Bluefish,Mackerel,Squid,Bunker
Water Depth: 120 to 190 ft.
Water Temp.: 69 to 73 degrees
Information : A recap on all the Shark Tournaments on above dates:
Had a Mako or more on each of the above trips. The best its been in years! Some were keepers and we tagged & released all the mako's under 66 inches.Alos filling in on these trips were, of course, the "Blue Dogs" aka;Blue Sharks. We must have had a least 20 of those from about 60 lbs to 175 lbs. One of the highlights was a "Dusky Shark" of which has been missing from our trips in a number of years. About a 50-60 lb'er which was tagged and released.
Now its time to head offshore to the Canyon's,thank God! It's been a long wait for that. I have to say that with all the "blue water" we have been seeing inshore don't be a bit surprised if we have yellowfin close to shore as we did a few years back (Ole's, Mud Hole, etc.)Next reports will be from the Canyon!!!!

Also, there were a lot of fluke boats in this area. Don't know how they did

Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 20-50 pounds
Bait or Lure: Custom Canyon Runner Squid Bars
Water Depth: 600 feet
Water Temp.: 71
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Justin Nighan and Mike Zajac were back out to the Spencer Thursday with the Brad Wilson charter from Manhattan. The action was a little slower today but great nonetheless as 14 yellowfin were boated. Out of the 14 there were 9 that we kept with 5 around 40-50 pounds and 4 20-25 pounders. We release the rest as they were short Customized Canyon Runner squid bars, weighted green machines and big tuna clones again produces as anything small that hit the water was immediately eaten by a skipjack or rat yellowfin. The action was all right on the 100 fathom line in 71 degree water.

We had a major blitz on top but could not get the baits below the blues before getting chopped. Left the fly rod in the truck of course. Still plenty of bass around but no real cows. Water Depth: 600

Information : The Canyon Runner crew had the Tom Becker charter from Freehold, NJ out to the Spencer Canyon on Wednesday and Capt. Phil Dulanie and mates Mike Zajac and Justin Nighan got into an even better bite then the day before. Reaching the edge a little late around 7am due to a tough ride out they had a slow pick before 8am putting 4 yellowfin in the boat and releasing 1. Thereafter the bite turned on and they had a nice pick all day with a couple of triples and quadruple headers. Trolling bigger Canyon Runner Customize squid spreader bars and big tuna clones and weighted green machines kept the skipjack at bay today. By 11am they had 19 yellowfin in the boat and by 1pm they were limited out and on their way home with 24 in the boat plus 5 released 40-pounders and a dozen releases of yellowfins under the legal limit for a total of 41 yellowfin – not bad for June 23rd.

Had a small group of people so it was easy to work with them during the bite. Largest was 19 pounds caught by a young lady from PA. Also had some Fluke and Blackfish. Sunday afternoons fishing was excellant also for the first 1 1/2 hours then it went to a one, one pick. Still good enough to keep the customers happy. Capt. Ron

Fishing Method: Overnighter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 30-50 pounds
Bait or Lure: Custom Spreader Bars
Water Depth: 100 fathoms
Water Temp.: 69
Information : And so it begins again. The Canyon Runner made its first run to edge yesterday for an overnighter and just got back to the dock. We kicked-off our 2004 canyon season the way we ended last year – with rods bent most of the trip. Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Justin Nighan and Mike Zajac took the John Post charter from Roseland, NJ down to the Spencer Canyon and were inundated with skipjacks as soon as they started fishing. Trolling Monday afternoon into the night was an effort as they had to fight through dozens and dozens of the skippies but they did managed 6 30-50 pound yellowfin and about a dozen yellowfin released before setting up for the night. The night was no disappointment either as they fought one very large mako for 10 minutes before it broke off and the first bait back in the water was picked up by a smaller mako that the crew made quick work of putting the 130-pound mako in the boat. Back up on the troll in the morning they got into a better bite of smaller yellowfin and put 3 more 30-50 pounders in the boat and released another dozen to finish with a total of 24 yellowfin with 9 from 30-50 pounds plus the mako, the rest of the yellowfin were just under 27 inches. Almost all of the bigger yellowfin and some of the smaller ones were caught on Customized Canyon Runner Squid Spreader Bars. The rest of the smaller yellowfin ate jets and ballyhoo. Not a bad way to start and hopefully it keeps up as we will be back out the rest of this week on one-day trolls, in a shark tournament over the weekend, and then its canyon everyday until November.

Information : Got to Sandy Hook about 9:30 AM and looked around and saw no action so we headed down to Shrewsbury Rocks to see if there was any action Proceeded past the rocks to a fleet that was fishing for fluke . There was no indication of any life , no birds , nothing happening. Decided to troll back to the rocks . Trolled two umbrella rigs, with the chart showing nothing. We caught a small blue jusr short of the rocks where there were a couple of blues chasing some bait on top. Proceeded to the rocks where the fleet was drifting across the high spots using live bunker for bait, We didn't see a fish being caught and picked up another small blue just to the east of the rocks. Continued all the way up the beach to Sandy Hook channel catching another two small blues and a very short striper. It was a magnificent day on the water, but the fishing was really poor. Got back to the house in time for a great fathers day barbecue, which ended a good day.

In the 1 minutes we actually had it on it jumped 4 seperate times before it won its freedom. It was a great site and we weren't that upset because we figured with the way the fishing is all six places would be filled with Makos over 200 pounds. Water Depth: 55 to 80 Ft.
Water Temp.: 62 Degrees
Information : Capt. Paul had the Lee and Jeff Childers charter on board the Bounty Hunter today and they experienced one of the tougher days of Seabass fishing this season. A 5 day South wind which dropped the water temperature, Lack of wind today and Dogfish everywhere we went made for difficult fishing. The charter toughed it out and ended the day a few fish short of the 2 man limit. We fished wrecks in 55 to 80 ft. of water south of the Inlet.

Sharking in the South Fingers on a friends boat (Jamaica Princess) was entertaining as we released 12 Blue Sharks but no Makos. Boats further south seemed to do better with the Makos then us. Appears from the docks that most of the bunker south of Manasquan were cleaned out by the Bunker Seiners. At least crab bait will be cheap!
