Angler Name : Bob Kursner
E-Mail : njcharter@aol.com
Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: June 28
Location: Glory Hole
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: 25-30 pounds
Bait or Lure: Spreader Bars
Water Depth: 200
Water Temp.: 70
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Brad Burgess stowed all the Striper equipment away until the Fall and started the Canyon Runner's tuna season on Wednesday with an inshore tuna trip with the Bob Kursner charter from Middletown, NJ. Trolling the Glory Hole and Chicken Canyon area we had a slow but otherwise productive day as we had 5 Bluefin on through the day but only managed to put 2 in the boat. Both on Fisherman Supply high speed spreader bars. Unfortunately it appeared that the massive schools that had been around for the last week moved out with the better water as we were fishing in greenish water all day and had to fight off bluefish. The two bluefins boated weight 25 - 30 pounds.

Fishing Method: Anchored
Specie: Weakfish
Size: 15-23
Bait or Lure: Shedders, squid, killies
Water Depth: 12
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Arrived at the dock at 6:00 and found serious rain and a dubious forecast. My fishing buddy bailed, and I was ready to bail as well when I saw my intrepid dockmate, Ed Holmes boldly predicting the weather would clear and headed out. Rounded up two guys from the dock and I headed out. As usual, Ed called me to the fish and at the first stop, we had continuous action but they were mostly shorts. This 3 hour bonus trip only yielded 6 nice weakies but it was much better than the empty ride home would have been without wetting a line.

Boat Name: Miss Shelly
Date Fished: June 27
Location: Flynn Knoll
Fishing Method: Drifting Clams
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 24'-31'
Bait or Lure: clams
Water Depth: 22
Water Temp.: 69
Information : Fourth trip over the past week and a half resulted in limiting out on stripers on the knoll. The fishing is flat out fantastic right now, I have also picked up several fish as late as noon. Tuesdays trip I started at 5:45 AM, due to light boat traffic we decided to chunk bunker(this was against my better judgement because I have been catching most of the fish drifting clams). Chunked for an hour without a bite , except the 23" fluke that was landed. Pulled anchor and went to drifting clams, from 7 am to 11 am, this produced 9 fish for myself and 1 fish for my guest. My guest hooked and missed 7-8 fish and is not an expereinced salt water angler, handicaping the 4 hours of fishing with this in mind kind of gives you an idea of how good the fishing really is. Four hours of drifting clams 18 strikes, 10 fish landed(2 fish 31',1 at 29', the rest slots between 24' and 27'). Bring on the weakies I have had my fill of the strpers. For those of you who have not, it is coming to an end maybe in another week or so. Outgoing tide seems to be producing best, as evidenced yesterday, once the tide changed after 11, no strikes. Don't waste your time and energy anchoring, don't spend your money on bunker, don't smell nasty. Buy fresh clams and drift over the mussel beds, tie the clams on or use a rubber band so they don,t fall off when you drift over rough structure.

Date Fished: June 27
Location: Flynn's Knoll
Fishing Method: Chunking
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: up to 35"
Bait or Lure: bunker
Water Depth: 15
Water Temp.: 70
Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie had to cancel an inshore tuna trip on Tuesday on the Canyon Runner due to weather so the Mike Sutter charter elected to try Striper chunking and they were glad they did. Anchoring up on Flynn's knoll and chunking bunker it appeared the stage of the tide barely matter as fish were caught all day long. Once the guys got the hang of setting up on the fish it was not uncommon to have 2 or 3 Bass on at a time. We finished the day with limits in both categories and released an additional 25 Bass.

Size: 100+
Bait or Lure: Mackerel, Squid, False Albacore
Water Depth: 130'-230'
Water Temp.: 67 degrees
Information : Got to the ledge at 8:00am. We planned to get there at around 7:00am but we were delayed due to a rough ocean. By 9:15 or so, the seas laid down. A 5 ft mako followed the slick up to the chum pot but refused to hit one of the baits. At 10:00 we released a 10 ft. blue shark. Just after releasing the blue shark 3 6'-8' makos cruised through the slick. We got a run off but he got off after just a few turns on reel. Ten minutes later another shark hit a bait suspended 30' below the surface but pulled the crimp out before we were able to identify it. An exciting but frustrating day.

Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: To 75 lbs
Bait or Lure: Reel Seat feather & squid bars
Water Depth: 225
Water Temp.: 68
Information : The Bluefins are In! Trolling the "Giant Alley" around the Texas Tower to the Triple Wrecks produced limit catch of Bluefins, with one topping 75 lbs. Fast trolling with Reel Seat feather and squid bars did the trick. I've never seen such large boils, but the real news was a lot of "pushes" that were observed on the still calm water that tells me that there are "real" mediums around in the 200 lb range. We ran through boils all the way to the east range of the mudhole, so I'd say you folks who are fishing closer to shore should have a shot at them this weekend! If we're not in the 'Canyons we'll be right along side of you! Good luck!

Both of us put 10 keepers in the box by 11:30, as well as another 7 shorts that went back, 3 Four Spot flounder(which I haven't seen at all in a few years, kind of a cross between a sundial and a fluke) a few skates, and a few nice fat seabass.. Water Depth: 450-3000
Water Temp.: 66-74
Information : I had the pleasure of assisting Captain Elio Cettina on a shake-down cruise for his "Four C's". The boat ran fine as we departed the Manasquan Inlet @ 11 p.m. Friday night bound for the Carteret Canyon, and the warm water that was predicted to be there. We found it all right, and did it contain life! We saw pods of different species of porpoise and dolphins, sometimes free-jumping for our enjoyment; other times boiling in a radius of a hundred yards! Sea turtles, miles of working birds, even 10' Makos were all checking out the breakfast serving for the day. But alas, no Marlins and scattered Yellowfin action in our area. All was not lost, we got hit by a nice bull Mahi-mahi and after he was done jumping around for awhile, his mate hit a second line and we boated them both. We did hear of good Yellowfin bite in a different area: we just weren't "there" this day.

Anchored up on the Knoll and the chunks weren't in the water 5 Minutes and the rods were a bending,,, This is no BS guys !!! I've done a lot of bass fishin and never have I experienced this kind of bite before,,Had my limit in 15 minutes and could have kept 5-10 more if it was legal,,,, 30 guys on board and we were done (limited out) by 5:30pm... This trip was suppose to go till 9:30pm but believe me no one was complaining,,We were limited out by the time the half day fluke boats were heading in and we got back to the harbor just as the Teal was heading out for his 6:30pm to 11:30pm trip.... IF ITS BASS YOU SEEK GET OUT THERE NOW !!! GET ON FLYNNS KNOLL, ANCHOR UP AND CHUNK AWAY.... IT'S REALLY CRAZY OUT THERE NOW........... Size: up to 16 pounds
Bait or Lure: shad rigs
Water Depth: 40
Water Temp.: 65
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie had the Dave Fiegenbaum charter up to the Shrewsbury Rocks on Wednesday and probalbly should have stayed home. In what was perhaps the worst day of the year so far, only 1 bluefish and 1 Striper was boated. The crowd was not to blame this time as there was no crowd. The only problem was the weather as winds to 30 knots blew-up and forced us home before we could move up to the Knoll where we knew a bite was on.

Boat Name: Carcharodon
Date: June 21
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Information : I've been getting dozens of emails re: Bluefin Tuna trolling. For those of you who cannot track the regs, Friday opens the expanded catch part of the season until July 30th; allowing 2 "Schoolie" Bluefins from 27-47" plus 1 "large school or small medium" Bluefin from 47-73"... and that would be a whopper! I'll be out from Friday on, & hopefully the gulf stream & bait will cooperate in the near future to hold the fish nearby. Yes, the schoolies are "there", they've been sighted and caught/released in shark slicks over the past couple of weeks. Details to follow...!

This didn't go too well so the afternoon was spent chasing small schools under birds. Action here was in spurts. Today's bluefishing was not the wild fishing I had been hearing and reading about. When I cleaned the fish I noticed they were loaded with roe. Good boat, great captain.

Water Depth: 18'
Water Temp.: 62
Information : Started fluking inside the hook at 2 PM on SAT, picked up 3 bubble fish 15.5(the kind that not legal after being in the box for a couple hours) I threw them back. Got tired of weeding through small fluke and decided to fish for stripers on the knoll at 5 PM. Sick of catching blue fish I decided to DRIFT clams, on my first drift I picked up a 31' fish, second drift 28', third drift 29', seventh drift 28', and finally at 7 PM I picked up my slot fish 25'. Went out the next morning to the same spot on the knoll at 5:30 AM, first drift produced a slot keeper 26',2nd drift I missed a fish, 3rd drift a 29' fish that I released, 5th drift produced another 29' fish(released), 9th drift a 26'(released)then nothing for awhile until 9 AM, hooked a large fish that spooled me and broke off after 15 min. Went to fluking inside the hook and picked up 3 keeper fluke on fluke killer rigs, one nice one at 23'. After chunking bunker all spring, catching many bluefish, and smelling real bad. I am happy to say that clams will be my choice for the next couple weeks.

Information : Fished the Mako Mania contest and opted to fish on Sunday due to the weather on Saturday. Glad we did since the seas were nice however Mr. Mako did'nt cooporate. We ran out to the Glory Hole and found cooler water so a quick spin into the Lilian area gave us 64 degrees. After setting up we ran into a 150# Blue shark that was just as annoying as the flies out there. We free tagged him and he came back a half hour later and took one of our baits. Lots of big blues and a last hour mystery fish that kept us bust for hour and half before breaking off. Maybe a big thresher or a Russian sub ? All in all a nice day. Maybe next year.

Unfortunately it eventually landed on the line and broke off. We would have released it anyway but now I fear that the line got wrapped aroung the fish which will make it tough for him to survive.

From what I saw everybody caught at least one keeper. The searobins didn't even want to bite. I guess it must have something to do with this bad weather. It felt more like april than june. My buddy did manage to hook into a nice size rouge bluefish. I think I'll target that species for the rest of the year. It doesn't pat to spend $40 to come home with one fish.

Information : Made the first shark trip of the year 46 miles SE of the inlet, with the pete Sentero group fom Lee& Perrins. Morning bite was nonexistent, but around 10:00 things got interesting when we hooked 2 Makos in rapid succession. Unfortunatley in the excitementthe hook pulled on one, and the second larger fish went under the boat , fouled the leader in the rudder, and quickly broke himself off. After that we released 3 bluesharks, and lost some other suspected blues. 63 degree water out there churned up by a stiff SW breeze.
