Location: Mudhole
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: 20 to 40 pounds
Bait or Lure: Real Seat Speader Bars
Water Depth: 140'
Water Temp.: 77
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out on Wednesday with the Dan Miller charter from Westfield, NJ and put togther an excellant catch of tuna. Trolling east of the Slough with Real Seat Speader Bars the charter boated 9 Bluefins between 20 and 40 pounds. All the fish were similar in size to the Yellowfin and Longfin we have been catching in the Canyon but it is a lot nicer to catch them 30 miles from the beach as opposed to 100 miles. Of course thanks to our friends at NMFS all the fish had to be released, however, the charter was just as exicted to catch and release as they would have been to catch and kill. The fish were catch early in the day and the bite shut down around 10:00 a.m. In addition to the 9 Bluefin, 1 nice dolphin and a few bonita were also captured.

Bait or Lure: Lures/ Small Bally
Water Depth: 120

At the 20 line hit a school of dolphin and boated two. This school hit seven of nine lines trolled. Immediately after, a white marlin streaked accross the spread, turned, lit up and came up in the middle. Fish whacked a bird, then a daisy chain, and head-slapped a bally rigged with an ilander. Couldn't hook it up after several tries with a naked ballyhoo. Turned North east and hit a short BF Tuna on a black and purple Zuker. Stop to chuck for the rest of the day with no action. Fished seem to sread out for this method.

Fishing Method: Troll
Specie: White Marlin
Size: 50-60 lbs
Bait or Lure: Spreaders/Zuckers
Water Depth: 1000
Water Temp.: 74-77
Information : Captain Vic departed Little Egg Inlet at 400a with Dr. Len and the regulars. Arrived at the Toms and began trolling 745a. The weather man remained consistant. Predicted wave hieghts were 2-4'. Wrong. More like 4-6' .Trolled for several hours with poor results. The canyon was barren for a while. Another boat arrived and also set out his lines. Captain Vic found a nice temperature break and the lines began to pop off the clips. Unfortunately a school of skippies were passing through. Continued to troll some more when Captain Vic was able to locate another good break. A white marlin salvaged the day by terrorizing the baits. After grabbing a purple and black zucker, the show really began. After several impressive airial shows, Dr. Len was able to bring the fish along side. The fish was billed and release to provide a fight for another angler. Captain Vic continued to troll and would sporadically pick up some more skippies. Unfortuneatly not a yellowfin was sighted. The water was clear with plenty of porposes. We'll give it another shot soon. According to the latest available info, we'll give the LindenKohl a shot.

There were lots of small Blues stealing our worms and chewing up our gear but most were Weaks 20" to 24". At about 9 pm our flat of worms was getting low and we added rubber worms to the small ones and broken pieces. This worked just fine. We returned to the dock at 2230 with a full limit of fish for all four guys. This was a great evening and the WEAKS are in........

Size: 4 - 6 Lbs.
Bait or Lure: Sandworms / Bunker
Water Depth: 25 - 38 Ft.
Water Temp.: 70 - 73
Information : Left Atlantic Highlands marina at 5:30 PM headed straight out to Chapel Hill. Read fish right away on channel edge and immediately boated fish up to 6 Lbs. Large schools of bait fish are holding these fish in the area as the bait readings on the Loran machine were quite heavy. Fished for (2) hours and quit at 8:00 PM with a packed cooler of (16) weaks. It appears that these fish will bite better in the evening rather than during the day as they did last year. However, this year the daytime bite has been very difficult due to heavy boat traffic in the channel. Will try again a couple times each week as the fluke fishing is in the toilet.

Information : Fished in the upper Bay this morning between the Mantoloking Bridge and the Canal, and had decent results w/ the weakies.. First stop @ Mantoloking Bridge was pretty picky on the dead high tide, then a move to the mouth of the Metedeconk paid off, where the water was moving, and picked up a nice 2 lber w/ a gray Fin-S fish.. Tried the Gunner's ditch w/ no luck, then back at the bridge, and had solid fishing for another 45 minutes, picking up a few more nice fish.. Not too bad for 2 hours of fishing!

All four people on board limited out after about 20 throw backs. We didn't win, most fish were the same size (17") the largest was about 3 1/2 lbs. Returned to the dock at 1700 with lots of fish for table. Sunday we returned to the same place, fished for three hours and had another 15 keepers and a dozen rejects. This time the fish were a little bigger, several were over 3 lbs and one over 5 lbs. Returned to the dock at noon after a second great day. Both days I had the area to myself, seldom a boat within a quarter mile.

Date Fished: July 19, 1998
Location: Monster Ledge area
Fishing Method: troll / chum-chunk on drift
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: 20 lb Tuna / 60 lb Mako / 5 lb Dolphin / 15 lb Bluefish
Bait or Lure: green machine / bunker back / feathers
Water Depth: 150- 250 ft.
Water Temp.: 75 to 76 degrees
Information : Captain Jim Henning put together another fine catch today, assisted by first mate Len Gadaleta. The day started off with a bang as shortly after putting out our spread amoung the Lobster Pots just west of Monster Ledge, we were rewarded with a fine chicken Dolphin of around 5 lbs which went right into the cooler, destined for the saute' pan. The dolphin hit a black and white jap feather trolled at 2000-2100 rpm. The water in the area was clean and warm, with readings hovering around 75-76 degrees most of the day. Shortly after the Dolphin was boated, the starbord rigger went off as something inhaled the mini green machine. The bend in the rod and the scream of the drag told us this was not another chicken Dolphin. After a great fight, Captain Jim skillfully landed then released a nice school Bluefin Tuna of around 20 lbs (after the charter had their souvenier pictures taken of course). Trolling gear was stowed as Instinct was quickly set up for chumming. Once the slick was established, we were soon into slammer blues in the 15 pound class and a great time was had caching these brutes on light tackle. After a while the blues mysteriously turned off, but we soon saw the reason why as the Mako leisurely made his way up the chum slick towards the boat. Len quickly cast a hooked bunker out towards the Mako along with a few bunker backs and within seconds was into the Shark. After an exciting battle, the Mako was brought alongside, photographed and the leader cut, allowing the "baby" 60 pounder to grow and fight another day. All in all a great day, thanks to Captain Jim. To inquire about open charter days, email Jim at the address above. Tight Lines! Len

Went straight to entrance of B Inlet...Water to rough and drift to fast closing in on low tide. Decided to just drift in the bay between BI and BB (closer to BI). 9.50 to 10 feet of water...nothing doing but seaweed. Once I moved east to 6 feet of water, it was a weakfish bonanza. In about 40-45 minutes, rod bent at least 25 times. Mixes of 12 to 15 inches. Forget about the fancy bait setup. A plain old sandworm on a hook did it everytime. (Just remember: use the whole sandworm, don't cut'em in half)

Went to ocean side of the Hook to drift for fluke in one of our favorite spots. Managed (13) keepers and (25) shorts, plus a pile of skates as the drift was basically non existent. Information : Report: Left the dock on Thursday night(6pm) with the Big Mohawk III out of Belmar NJ. We rode for about an hour and a half and anchored up. The boat had a light crowd of about twenty anglers who picked away at fish (except for me and my brother) until the sun started to set. Once the sun went down the boat was into fish. Didn't have a bait in the water for more than two minutes till it was time to head back at about 10:45. All you had to do was feed your line out in the slick and you had fish. Casting 20 to 30 feet put you into a fish in a matter of seconds as opposed to that long two minute wait that most anglers suffered through. Nick and Chris the mates did a fine job. Even though these guys are young they're as good as it gets when gaffing fish, handling tangles and keeping the chum going. All the fish were nice sized. Most of my fish were between 8 and 12lbs and were caught on 12lb test. This 6 - midnight trip is great for anyone looking to do a fishing trip during the week that still has to get up for work in the morning. Though I am a little tired right now. tight lines

Bait or Lure: Sandworms.....squid/killies
Water Depth: 10-40 Feet
Water Temp.: 67.5-69.2
Information : Headed for the flats in the back of the bay today in hopes of finding the weakfish. We weren't disappointed as on the second drift we boxed a nice 17 inch weakie. We stayed in this area and added another 3 weakfish all over 22 inches as well as 12 bluefish in the 1-1 1/2 pound class. After boat traffic increased and the sun got higher in the sky, whatever bite that was soon died and we head for deeper water towards the Knoll. This proved to be a wise choice as we were hooked up into a 3.5 pound weakie immediately. We added another 4 weakfish in the 3-4.5 pound class plus a keeper fluke. These are great light tackle fish as they made numerous runs taking drag .On my boat we fish for them with a 5'9" spinning outfit ( thats more suited for smallmouth bass ) and 6 pound test which we attached to a 3-way rig...today they seemed to perfer a floating jig head as opposed to a plain hook.Once we ran out of sandworms,we finished the day fluking off the tip of the Hook and by Romer Shoals,we netted another 2 keeper fluke as well as numerous shorts.

Dismayed, we took the boat to the Elephant's Trunk where we had 2 knockdowns, resulting in one Yellowfin (15# - 3rd Place Tuna in the Tourny) and one broken line. We were all set to kill Tuna & Dolphin at the Trunk on Day 2, but nasty 6 - 8 Foot seas kept us inshore. If there were only about 15-20 people on board everyone would've limited out but due to the 40 people on board catches were lower but everyone had a good share of blues. The crew really worked their butts off on the Cock Robin, I'd just like to say thanx!

Information : Started the day trying to catch weakies just off Fortesque. Caught a nice 17" on first try, then nothing. Picked up and went south about 3 miles and started a long drift all the way to Mia Mall Light. The fluke action was non-stop, but almost all throw backs. The three of us caught approximately 120 fluke in the next 3 hrs, but only five keepers 17" to 18". We hope these fluke can grow 1 to 2 inches by Sept. PS - I also tried a rod all day rigged with a 5-3/4" blue-black Fin-S Fish lure, and got nothing on it. This makes three days using this lure with zero results.

Boat Name: Skipjack
Date Fished: 7/8/98
Location: Keyport/Rormer Shoal/Raritan Reach
Fishing Method: Drift, Jig and Troll
Specie: Weakfish
Size: 2-5 lb
Bait or Lure: Plugs and bait
Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 68+
Information : My buddies, Joe and Mike, and I took the day off from work Wednesday to fish Raritan Bay and had a field day ... Mike and I boated the bay grand slam (weakfish, bluefish, fluke and striper) while Joe managed to boat all species except fluke. The weakfish turned on on the Keyport flats shortly after slack high tide and for the next two hours we caught 'em drifting sands and squid as well as plugging for 'em with Rat-L-Traps and Mirro Lures. When they turned off we headed towards Raritan Reach and drifted sands and squid where we picked up a couple of flatties. Spying a flock of birds working near Staten Island we headed over to investigate where we ended up plugging cocktail blues. They didn't stay up very long though, so when they turned off we turned on the troll at Rormer Shoal ... where we boated two nice stripers (though shorts) and another chopper blue. All in all a great day in the bay and not bad consolation for a planned shark trip cancelled by the forecast. By the way ... everything was released except two weaks and one fluke.

Date Fished: 7/7/98
Location: Resor
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: 22 & 25 lbs
Bait or Lure: Spreader bar / Cedar plug
Water Depth: 130
Water Temp.: 72.5
Information : Started at the ridge , headed east to Oley's lump , then east to the Resor wreck. We landed one 12 lb. Bluefish that hit a Green Machine. 1 1/2 miles past the Resor I turned south to troll the 20 fathom line and 7 miles later first Bluefin hit purple mini squid spreader bar. After landing and releasing ,I turned the boat around and headed back for the #'s and had another 4 run offs on several subsequent passes resulting in 1 more Bluefin landed on a plain cedar plug. Both lures were being trolled in the flat line clips 2nd wake back. A small note to those private anglers fishing the Barnegat Ridge area, beware of the captain sharing the duties with Capt. Ettel of the White Star IV. He is very discourteous to the private recreational fisherman on the fishing grounds. When approaching the ridge on tuesday , I had 3 of my lines in the water already ,moving at 7 knots when this loser approached me from directly astern, and then to 75 ft. off my Stbd. side doing better than 15 knots and making a hell of a wake. With the whole ocean to my port and stbd., this maneuver was idiotic and unsafe!!! I have always been courteous to the charter captains fishing any area I fish and would expect the same from them!! Good fishing to all !!!!

Bait or Lure: worm
Water Depth: 12"

Information : Went out in the late afternoon and tried for fluke at the ammo pier. Wind and tide would not allow even 6 ounces to hold bottom. Ran up to the flats off the Keansburg pier to try for weakfish. Steve was the only one to capture weaks. Ed reclaimed his title as Sea Robin Magnet. I managed only one 17" flattie. A good time was had by all. Easy does it!

Location: Shrewsbury Rocks
Fishing Method: Troll
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 29" to 32"
Bait or Lure: diamond jig and umbrellas
Water Depth: 30+
Water Temp.: 68
Information : After an exciting time caughting Tuna with Capt. Edelman on the Triple Nickle we decided to try a relaxing after- noon fishing Fluke. Fluke fishing proved somewhat slow and after a couple hours had only boated three keepers. As we discussed what to try next, noticed birds working one mile off. Started jigging and soon caught one striper however the next hit was a 15lb Bluefish that took quite awhile to catch due to having only 10 lb test line on a light rod (released him). But then saw birds reforming to the north, tried trolling this time and the Bass were everywhere, many hits including a triple..all keepers. In all brought home six over 30 inches. Quite a pleasant surprise.
