Fishing Method:
Specie: Fluke
Size:
Bait or Lure:
Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 73
Information : If you read yesterdays report about today going to be the day they bite because the weekend was over....WRONG! Absolutly worse conditions today..didn't think it could possibly happen, we had no wind against the tide and never had enough current to give us a drift (anywhere). Fished Ambrose channel in the AM, thought for sure without the breeze we would move..waited and waited, movement never came...made a few moves trying to find a drift, power drifted to no avail. Had a handfull of fish, some Sea Bass and ling. To top it off...it was hot as Hell! tommorow doesn't look much better. We do have a Charter anyway, so stay home in the AC and give this weather pattern a few days to clear out....Bluefishing was very good again last night....Went to fish the spot we were at the night before, but unfortunatly it was occupied by a mook trying to bust chops! No problem thou, we just went elsewhere and caught'em....capt.ron

Bait or Lure: killie, squid, spearing
Water Depth: 20-40'
Water Temp.: 68
Information : Sunday 7/30/06 Report: Was out with a friend Capt. Jim, on his boat ‘Glory Days’. Headed out of Manasquan Inlet at 7AM since reports for flukin’ sounded a little better up that way. Headed to the Klondike spent half hour drifting 3 different areas not even a nibble Headed in to Spring Lake Hotel around other boats picked up a couple shorts, and a big sea robin. Moved down to Sea Girt area, and then the Sea Girt Firing range - picked a couple more shorts. Decided to try one more spot before heading in and saw a fleet down by Bay Head, so we headed there… WOW!... that was the place to be yesterday!... We fished from the Beach out to 35’ of water… The bottom had to be carpeted with fluke. You pulled in a fish on every drop, or you needed to re-bait. It was as if the fluke were fighting each other for the bait it was non-stop action with bites for an entire hour and a half. We caught more than 40 fluke in an hour and they were all 15-16”… Ended up with 3 fish in the box between 18-20”… Had we started here, earlier we would have limited out for sure. Ran out of bait at 1:30 PM and headed in!.. If you’re gonna fish over the next couple days this is the place to start a massive amount of fish are there. Head out Manasquan Inlet, hang a right, go down to the 2nd water tower (White) and fish between the beach and out to 40’… Danny

Bait or Lure: Killies and strips
Water Depth: 11' to 15'
Water Temp.:
Information : Tom and I fished various spots around Sandy Hook Bay this morning, a couple of keeper Fluke here and there, no real pockets of fish. Areas we fished that didn't produce early on did produce a couple hours later. It would seem that the fish are moving about. No Bluefish to annoy us and the ever-present Sea Robins were everywhere. Still many Blueclaw crabs coming up with the fish baited hooks. Killies did better than anything else, even Tom's Sea Robin belly strips. We had a total of five keeper Fluke up to 18½" and one keeper crab in my crab hotel. I am trying out new bait for the crabs, cow tendons; they are really tough and long lasting. Time will tell if they work. Tom filleted four Fluke for some guys from Pennsylvania, glad to help out, thanks for the two beers guys. PETE

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: July 25-26
Location: Lindy
Fishing Method: Overnighter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 20-30 Pounds
Bait or Lure: Canyon Runner Squid Spreader Bars and Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 50-100 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 81
Information : Captains Phil Dulanie and Mark DeCabia along with mate Mike Gallo had the Matt Cerino charter out on the Canyon Runner for a Tuesday/Wednesday overnighter. The ride out right into the teeth of a 20 knot SE wind was not fun and they did not get to the Lindencohl until 8:30pm so they went right to the chunk. They had more squid then they’ve seen in years and ended up filling a cooler with them. In addition they pulled a dozen mahi out of the slick but had no tuna bites. Up on the troll at 5am they quickly went 3 for 3 on 20-30 pound yellowfin at the Lindy and then worked off to the deep where they pulled 3 big longfin in the 50-55 pound class. Unfortunately the third longfin did not make it in the boat as a huge tiger shark got it instead. They worked that area for a while and they moved inshore where they did a couple more singles on yellowfin and then went 7 for 9 again on 20-30 pound yellowfin and missed a white. The tuna ate Canyon Runner 9 Inch Rainbow Bars and Ballyhoo.

Date Fished: 7/26/06
Location: Manasquan Inlet to Barnegat Inlet
Fishing Method: Drifting, Jigging
Specie: Fluke
Size: 12-18"
Bait or Lure: killies, squid
Water Depth: 30-50"
Water Temp.: 64 to 71
Information : I took my brother-in-law Larry, and a couple other friends out flukin' today... Had planned to start at DCC and venture out later, but heard some 2nd hand reports of good catches in 70' of water off Pt. Pleasant yesterday, so started outside Manasquan Inlet at 8AM... Followed some Party boats and they all headed South. I thought they were headed for the Axel Carson Reef, but they all stopped just west of the reef in 50' of water. Water temp on top was 70 degrees and bottom was 50... Picked away at shorts, doggies and skates and then headed closer in off Mantoloking - same thing there. Took a ride to Ortley beach and tried there - same thing... headed to Seaside and was surprised to see the water drop there to 64 degrees. Mostly short fluke there... Around 11:30AM headed for the bathing beach at IBSP and saw some boats out at the 45' mark - temp there was back up to 71 degrees on top... A lot of healthy activity there and put two fluke at 18" in the box... All in all had about 30 short fluke for the day and another 30 mixed junkfish. Came in Barnegat Inlet at 2PM... An absolutely fabulous day on the water - no complaints from anyone - seas were 1- 2 and we had a good drift most of the time. By far the best spot to keep an eye on was the IBSP Bathing beach - if you're going out in the next couple of days - try there. I have to add - there were innumerable pods of bunker popping up with Blues underneath - up and down the entire coast - most of the blues that we saw were 2-3lbs today.

Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo & Squid
Water Depth: 1000 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and Captain Mark DeCabia along with mate Mike Zajac took the Joe Borofski charter out to the Hudson Canyon Monday and despite leaving late due to one of the charter being late they still found some fish that evening after putting the lines in the water at 4:30pm. They started on the edge and started trolled to the deep where Offshore Satelite Services had some nice water. Half way there they ran over a couple 100 pound yellowfin and got one and missed one. They ate ballyhoo. They worked that area a little then kept moving east to where they missed another tuna and nailed a nice white marlin on a bonita plug and picked a mahi. They set up on the drift right where they missed the last tuna and a shortly thereafter got their first tuna bite of the night on the chunk. They quickly put a 110 pound yellowfin in the boat, lost a 130 pounder at the boat and boat another 100+ pounder right after. The action took place between 10pm and 11:30pm. They did not have another bite and were up on the troll at 4:30am looking for a shot of longfin or big-eye but nothing came up. They did miss another white right before heading home.

Hooked a huge thresher in the glory hole, had him at the boat in 1 hour, had him circling there for 15 -20 minutes, but could only get the tip of his tail out of the water. Watched him swim in a circle below the boat before finally making a dash for the rear motors. Just like that he was free. 30 minutes later boated a nice mako. Had to come in early thank glad we did, it was rough out there. A 25 contender is fun, but sometimes it's just not enough.

Information : Tom and I did not fish last week due to some work related issues I had. Today with the forecast storms, Tom and I decided to get one day of fishing in by staying close to homeport. We fished the South East corner of Sandy Hook Bay moving from spot to spot trying to find some legal size Fluke. There were plenty of small Blueclaw crabs to annoy us and steal our baits, we have never seen this many in this part of the bay. The calico crabs have all but disappeared from the area. Tom managed to find two keeper Fluke to 19½". I got one. There were very few Sea Robins (Tom likes to use them for strip bait) and no yellow-eyed demons to bother us. The bay was flat with light winds and an occasional rainstorm. After tying up at the slip it poured. Very few boats out today. PETE (°_)°)

So anyway we decided to hit the ocean looking for blues and maybe just maybe a striper. Did find bunker schools big ones and trolled for about 20 minutes nothing. So we heard these 2 boats on the radio saying there was a hot fluking bite going on in double creek. So we got there right and it was mobbed it was like the Parkway in rush hour. So we drifted for about 20 minutes had 4 hits but couldn't bring them up. Saw people catching like crazy blues weaks and of course fluke. Saw a whole boat of people like 6 or 7 hooked up on fluke right next to me. Thinking about heading to the ridge next weekend Just wanting to know what is biting out there. TIGHT LINES!!!!

Our last stop was back inside the bay which produced nothing. Most of the action was down the beach. Our total count was 20 fluke (1 keeper 17"), one Bluefish (4 lbs) and 6 Skates we also had 2 bite offs (probably Bluefish) Overall a nice day on the water.

Fishing Method: Troll
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 20-45
Bait or Lure: Canyon Runner Squid Spreader Bars and Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 50-100 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 81
Information : Captains Phil Dulanie and Mark DeCabia along with Mike Zajac took the Mike Walsh charter out to the Hudson Canyon on Wednesday to look for a better bite of tuna a little closer to home. They left behind the string of thunderstorms that came through Tuesday night and made a slow treck to 3 miles west of the bombs where they put them in the water at 6:30am. They trolled across to the east wall down to the elbow and out to the 100-square without a bite. They decided to give the west wall a look over and crossing over right at the tip of the 500 fathom line they had an 8 bagger of yellowfin putting 6 in the boat between 20 and 45 pounds. They obviously hit everything and 3 were 30-40 pounds 2 were 20 pounds and 1 was released as a short. They did not produce again dispite working that area for an hour and then worked over to the west wall to drift for tiles where the pulled just one. They went back on the troll and right at the west elbow had another shot of half a dozen fish but not one of them stayed on the line. They did see the fish come up on the flat lines during that second shot and they were 40 pound fish.

They ended up releasing the 60 pound white. They moved south to try to get in on a little bite in the Wilmington and before getting there came across an 8 foot board and proceeded to pull 3 huge mahi of 34, 25, & 20 pounds in addition to 10 smaller ones. They moved to the east tip where another white malrin came up on the another 9 inch Canyon Runner Rainbow Bar (each of these whites came up on bars trolled from the tip rigger). Mike pulled the bar away from the white and dropped back the long flat which had a ballyhoo/Ilander combo on it and baited the second whtie of the day. Sharking went bad saw a 6 foot mako circle the boat for 20 minutes and not take a thing. Then a few hours later have a whole bonito hit by a shark, but we failed to get him hooked. First run off, we simpily missed it, second one we landed & released about 100lb dusky. The next run off was a bigger fish but the line broke at the knot, would of loved to see that one. Our spinning rod set up for bluefish then became the hot rod. We released another 100lb Dusky and the final run off swallowed everything and bit through the mono on the spinning rod. We also had two sharks swim up the slick but did not even look at our offerings and one lonely bluefish. Gorgeous day on the water - calm and a nice breeze and caught some fish. On the way in, we saw school after school of bait on the surface but did not see any bluefin chasing them.

Information : Waited a couple hours for the fog to lift this morning... Left the dock at 9AM and headed out Manasquan Inlet. Had planned to run south to Barnegat Inlet and see what was happening along the beach, but was afraid that the fog would hang around longer in the colder water.. Two friends Bill and John joined me on the trip... Instead, saw a lot of boats up North and the water temp was showing 68 so we decided to try a few drifts between the Inlet and the Sea Girt Rifle Range. While drifting, there were constant scattered bunker pods appearing around the boat with blues feeding, but couldn't scare even one of them up on metal... Everyone was pulling in fluke in 25-35' of water... We had about 15 with only one in the box... Fish are definitely getting bigger - most were 15-16"... Sounded like everyone fishing had 3-6 keepers in the box... With the heat this week - maybe next weekend will be back to normal!... Came back in at 3PM... Danny

Almost two hours later we had a major hit on the 60 foot bait. It screamed off like a Mako would and then just ran deep peeling line and running straight down. Two hours later we landed a 450 pound Thresher. It was a real team effort for us not to loose this beauty at the boat. The most exciting thing was we had our junior angler's Nicholas Hoffman 12, and Frank Hoffman Jr. 10 out on their first shark'ing trip. Tried a last spot on the edge of the channel, 1 keeper, 2 shorts..time to go!! No lack of hits, but the fish would only grab the end of the bait, drop back to them and they were gone, not very aggressive. The first one of the day is VERY SMOOTH.......capt.ron

We moved to a piece near by and had a few shorts and 2 keepers. Left and moved to the flats on the West side of the Ammo pier and had several shorts but put a few more keepers in the box. Then found a nice piece near the Reach and fished all alone and had several keeper and a ton of shorts and finshed the day with 10 keepers. Not bad with only 4 guys fishing.

Too many 16 inch fish that are going back....The differance between a hero and a bum is a lousy 1/2 inch!! Plenty of action in most areas we fish, way too many shorts, but we need the action to keep the customers happy...Haven't seen any quality 6-8 pounders yet, and we have tried the channels...in the deep, the edges and so on. Water temp the other day went from 72 to 67 degrees!! Can't imagine what the bottom temp is, but the sinkers were Ice cold. Many of the fish we do catch have had plenty of rain fish in them so they are feeding. Bluefish starting to show now, so we will be sailing Wendsday till Saturday afternoons 5-10pm and Sunday 3:30 till 9:00pm. Location: Sandy Hook Reef
Fishing Method: Jigging
Specie: Black Drum
Size: huge
Bait or Lure: shad body jigs
Water Depth: 45
Water Temp.: 68
Information : My brother, Greg and I were bottom fishing about mile and a half off the beach. A boat ran up to us and told us about a huge school of black drum feeding and finning on the surface where they had been fishing a few hundred yards from we were. They said they had their limit with fish up to 100 lbs. Yeah, right. We ran over and found the school. Looked like they were feeding on crabs that were swimming near the surface, but I really don't know what they were doing or if this was common behavior at all. Casting shad bodies on spinning tackle we caught drum until our arms ached and they were "big". Immediate hook ups, almost always both of us were fighting fish at the same time. We fished the school for about two hours and caught 9 and kept a few. I hope they're good eating. We didn't have a scale near heavy enough so I can only estimate, but they all were easily over 60 lbs. Other fisherman at the dock said they were 90. My brother caught one on 15 lb spinning tackle and line and in retrospect, it could have been some kind of record. Weird, but true. Thanks to the guys in the Osprey for the tip to get on what may be a once in a lifetime fishing exerience.

Information : A fish here, a fish there, a fish way over there describes the way our Fluke fishing trip went this morning. Tom managed five keeper Fluke to 18½", I on the other hand found no keepers. As has been common this season the short fish far outnumber the keepers, many, far too many missing the mark by small fractions of an inch. The law was out on the bay today. Be very careful out there. Back at the Atlantic Highlands Harbor the CO's were busy busting the rampers with short fish. The Sandy Hook Bay was as flat as Farrington Lake, clouds overhead and a slight Easterly wind kept things comfortable. Large Bunker is still available in small schools, with the yellow-eyed demons chasing them. Only a few Sea Robins to harass us. There are a large number of small Blue Claw crabs about, looks good for late summer and fall crabbing.

Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Captains Mark DeCabia, Mark DeBlasio and Phil Dulanie took the Craig Stires charter right back out to the Toms Canyon Friday and started right at the tip at 6:30am. They worked out to east corner and started to pick some fish. The went 3 for 5 on yellowfin from 20-50 pounds added a mahi and caught and released a white marlin. The yellowfin favored 9 inch rainbow squid bars, and zuchinni tuna clones, and the white and mahi ate ballyhoo. They worked that area for a while picking another yellowfin and then moved inshore where they hooked up 10 yellowfin at once. With only a 3 man charter there were a few pulled hooks and other mistakes - they ended up putting 4 nice 40-50 pound yellowfin in the boat and had 7 yellowfin altogether as of 9am. The rest of the day was spent inshore as a couple other yellowfin were boated and released but no other nice yellowfin were taken. Seems like the best bites have been early in the morning.

They started 5 miles inshore of the edge on the 50 fathom line as they saw some life but nothing happened as they worked their way to the edge and out to the deep. They then got their first bite in 1200 feet of water when longfin came up and tried to eat all nine baits. They ended up boating four and they ate Canyon Runner 6 inch purple/black Spreader Bar, Blue/White Jet, Zuchinni Tuna Clone and a ballyhoo/jet combo. They worked that area to death but never got another bite. They headed back to the 100 fathom line and down the edge and had alot of life but again no more bites. They worked their way back into the 50 fathom line where they started and had a couple shots of small yellowfin putting 2 in the boat Those yellowfin ate Zuchinni Tuna Clones and a Ballyhoo/jet combo. Information : Tom and I had retired tinknocker Dennis Hughes out with us this morning working over the Atlantic Highland flats. Dennis and I competed for the biggest Fluke while Tom helped out with some keepers. Again persistence paid off as the fishing was at best spotty. Strange how doing the same drift over and over can produce sometimes. The number of Fluke just missing the mark by a ¼" was amazing. All in all six keepers to 18½" is a good morning of fun. There were many small Blues around to keep things interesting along with the Ospreys flying overhead. PETE (°_)°)

Size: 2 5ft 80lbs
Bait or Lure: Bluefish
Water Depth: 200ft
Water Temp.: 69
Information : Lets lay out the story for you we had a personal charter with Ronnie and Robert D along with Tommy Luke. All would have been fine if it wasn’t for the dirty water to 34 some odd miles out of Rockaway Inlet. That put us at the North east corner of the Glory Hole away from anyone else. It wasn’t more than an hour and a 5 ‘ Mako came crashing through the balloons hitting the farthest one out at 20 feet down. He decided he didn’t like that bait and dropped down to the 40 foot deep rig 60 feet closer to the boat. We landed it with no event and took him in to the boat and box HOT. The 2nd Mako was an hour later on a live bluefish. With a massive hit and one jump again in the boat and in the box. The most important thing to remember is fresh live blues will help make the day. Thanks Rob for good eyes while passing monsters ledge we hit a school of blues about a 100 yards around. If it weren’t for them we would have been skunked. Great day with great friends.

Information : Gambled on the forcast and won. Launched at Belmar today and not even a roll as I ran out the inlet. Drifted off the beach for a bit, only 1 short. My 18' boat was moving too fast even with 8 ounces of lead. I decided to run up to the rocks, trolled some big plugs up to deal, then motored off Sea Bright. There was a crazy east/west line of clean/brown water from the beach out. I guess this was the southern limit of the storm runoff. Lots of birds working the color break so I trolled along it myself and nailed a huge bluefish on a 12" plug. Some big bass and other blues grabbing random bunker also. Swell from the SE made for a rougher ride home. Tight Lines!

Information : Trolled LI in the early Am. Nothing but huge Bluefish, 15-20 lbs. Finally found some warmer water inshore. Had a large mako attack the spread and destroy a spreader bar. Found a school of bluefin busting on the surface and went 1 for 1 on the first pass. Fish sounded afterward and had no other takers. TOns of life with mako's going aerial all over. Great day on the water in 1 foot seas until the last 5 miles to BI where they quicky built to 4 foot in a nastly chop. Great first offshore trip.

Information : Tom and I stayed close to homeport today trying to put a catch together so we could fish more often. The price of gas is starting to cut into our fun. Working the flats over near the Atlantic Highlands Marina gave up six keeper Fluke to 20½" in shallow water. The bite wasn't steady and we had to work for every fish, but persistence paid off. It being uncommon, but I again got the biggest Fluke and most of the keepers. Tom has been trying harder, just like Hertz. The Sandy Hook Bay was calm, the water fairly clear, in spite of all the rain lately. Had a lot of tree branches floating around us this morning. The air was cool, making the conditions very comfortable. There were a few Sea Robins around and the small yellow-eyed demons pestered us. Short Fluke were in great abundance, many missing the mark by only ¼". Going to try to get back out July 4. PETE (°_)°)
