Date Fished: 7/30/04
Location: 18 miles off of Barnegat Inlet
Fishing Method: Chum/Troll
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 6 lbs
Bait or Lure:
Water Depth: 73 feet
Water Temp.: 71.3
Information : Headed out with a fine crew from the office in search of bluefish, bonito and bluefin tuna. Set up the drift at first and landed a few bluefish on chunks and spearing. Good readings on bottom from time to time forced us to hang around. A few trollers were picking away at some bluefin tuna, but all releases. Picked up on the troll in hope of a larger bluefin and picked slowly at bluefish until one bluefin nailed an artificial that gave us some fun on the lighter rod. A few inches short for the taking and released him unharmed. What a great species, protect them guys, the ones out there right now are all juveniles. Don't take em unless they are well over the minimum. Great sea conditions and water clarity offshore. Came back in and picked away at sea bass and fluke on one of the reefs and returned home with some fish and a happy crew. Enjoy!

Information : Carl Graber along with son Mike was on board the Bounty Hunter and Capt. Paul made his way back to the Farms. With lines running up to the bow it took a while to get the Blues started but as conditions improved the fish turned on and it was a non stop bite. The 2 man charter put 20 Blues up to 12 lbs. in the box then decided to give Fluke a try. Several drifts off Monmouth Beach and Long Branch never produced a touch. The water quality was terrible. Moving to the south of Manasquan Inlet we found the water to be better but only managed 2 keeper Fluke.

Information : A very disappointing afternoon of fluking. Brownish-green water all the way north from Shark River Inlet to 1.5 miles off Long Branch where we fished. Capt. did not seem too interested in looking for the fish, we basically made drift after unproductive drift in the same area. Out of about 70 fishermen aboard, there were maybe 5 keepers all day, and not very many shorts either. Only a few assorted trash fish and a few sea bass, & most of the time there was absolutely no action.

Water Depth: 42ft
Water Temp.: 73
Information : Best day of the year so far! Had a great drift in the am that lasted till around 12:30. Fished the deeper parts of the chanel while we could. At least a 70% ratio of Keepers to Throwbacks today, I haven't seen that in a long while. Most fish were 16 1/2 to 23 inches. Spearing and squid are the norm, but kellies have been working just as well..Finished up back in the bay, but the water is still very muddy from all the rain runoff. Hopefully that will clear up in a few days because there are some nice fish there also. Very nice spread of fish this year, depending on conditions is where we go, sometimes down the beach, the back bay, the flats of Staten Island or in the Channels, it's nice to know we have a few back ups..Largest for the week so far is 5 1/2 pounds. Boat Name: TENACIOUS
Date Fished: 7/17/04
Location: Farms
Fishing Method: Chumming

Size: 6-10 lbs
Bait or Lure: bunker
Water Depth: 100 ft
Water Temp.: 70

We made the fishing more challenging by only allowing spinning reels with 20 lb test line. The fish were very reluctant to bite initially and by 10 am we only had two fish on ice. We took off the wire leaders, added circle hooks and the fish turned on with triple hookups. Although they lost as many as they boated, the charter still managed to fill the cooler by 1130am.
Fluking off sea girt on the way home surprisingly produced 8 keeper fluke to 20 in.

Trolling down the edge from the Lindenchol Canyon they picked a couple yellowfin on Canyon Runner Custom Squid Bars and Ballyhoo. However they had to make it all the way to the northeast corner of the Wilmington before they got into a good bite. Trolling for just 2 hours there they boated 2 small big-eyes and 6 large yellowfin between 70-80 pounds. In addition they added a couple mahi.

Specie: White Marlin
Size: 70 pounds
Bait or Lure: ballyhoo
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 74
Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie waited to hear from the night bluefishing party boats about the seas offshore and given the green light by Dale on the Jamaica we headed off to the canyon last night with the John Scandalious charter from Holmdel, NJ. The ride out was fine, the troll was fine and the ride home was in the trough. While the weather cooperated the tuna did not. We trolled from the Carteret to the Spencer and boated a mahi, lost a couple tuna and saved the trip with a 70 pound White Marlin pulled out of the Spencer but that was it. While it was slow it sure beats sitting at the dock. All the fish hit ballyhoo trolled behind the Canyon Runner Custom Squid Bars.

Information : Sorry to report that we had a fish kill after the rain storms I saw hundreds of dead fluke dozens of dead blowfish and sea robins and a fish that I could not identify. They were all near the strom drain pipe on the beach. I don't know what caused it. Maybe some toxic material in the storm drains, maybe a lightning hit . I called the fish and game and reported it. Many of the fluke were 1 to 3 inch fish with many fish between 14 and 18 inches. If anyone knows why this happened, please e-mail me and fill me in. I remember as a kid, people woud use the storm drains to drain old oil and anti freeze into. We know better now. Please remember that these drains end up someplace and that someplace is where fish live. Peace.

Phil on the Canyon struck first with a pair of lager ones as we had a tough time getting keepers until 1:30pm when we had our first shot of three in the deep. After an hour bite we had 6 on ice and lost a couple of larger fish. Picked up a couple of mahi and headed home with the expectation of a rough ride as we got closer to home. Well it did blow up but on our stern. Stayed at 30kts all the way to the inlet Had a good day with plenty of action.

Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie and mates Capt. Justin Nighan and Mike Zajac got back on the tuna Monday after taking the weekend off to let the crowds fight it out. After a very tough ride out for a one day trolling trip, and not getting on the troll until 7am, the Sam DiFeo charter from Rumson, NJ effort's were quickly rewarded with a 5 bagger. The bite stayed consistent for the rest of the day and the charter fought well over 25 fish boating 20 with 11 between 40-60 pounds and the rest released. In addition, to spice things up, they boat 4 mahi with the largest weighing 28 pounds on the scale and they missed a white and were on their way home after only 6 hours of fishing. Today we tried something different with the Canyon Runner Custom Squid Spreader Bars and trolled them all day on our inside short riggers (we have always always trolled them on the long riggers and down the middle) It paid of as the first shot of fish would come up on the ballyhoo trolled behind the bars and then as we slowed down the bars would go off. The fishing took place from 2 miles south of the Lindy to 2 miles north of the Spencer.

Sunday July 11
Capt Bob and mates Greg and Scott Forfar took the new Jersey Fishing Show out for a day of sharking. Special quests today were Dave Szolt # 79 and Wayne Chrebet # 80 of the New York Jets. We went out to the triple wreck area and started a drift. Soon the wind changed and we had to make a move to cover more productive terrain. Just after the move to 185 foot waters we had a mako in the slick. The mako took the high bait and Wayne Chrebet fought the fish for fifteen minutes before boating it. It only made one jump but was still a beautiful sight. That was the only action we had all day but still a successful trip.

The first fish hit after about five minutes and they kept on biting until about 2 pm . No time for eating and drinking at all as we alway's had fish on our light tackle rods with 12 lb test mono. .Fish ran from four to ten pounds. We finally ran out of hooks, so we switched to mega jigs and continued to catch. We must of caught 40 to fifty fish , we didn't have time to count them. Don't ask how many fish we lost during that time due to broken lines etc.ALL fish were released. Three mighty tired fisherman , headed for home at about 2:30

Saturday July 10
Capt Bob and mate Bob Gold took the Howard Garfield party consisting of Chris Franus, Paul Garfield, David Garfield, Marty Winnick, and Stan Winnick out for sharks. With the water temp up to 74 degrees we decided to go to deeper water. Traveling 53 miles south east of our inlet we found nice water and a good drift. We missed our first mako when it jumped and spit the hook. We lost our second mako two hours later when it hit the deep line and skyrocketed with out peeling any line. By the time we could get the line tight the fish was gone. This one was around 150. Fifteen minutes later trying to get the lines back in the water the lone bait took off. After setting the hook Howard took over and the fight was on. Going around the charter twice we finally boated the big thresher. It weighed in at Hoffmans Marina at 474 pounds. Great way to end the day.

Water Temp.: 71
Information : Well, I remember why I like to go during the week!! Not only was the boat sold out (w/ me stuck next to the guy who wouldn't shut up!), but every boat in the world was clogging up every fishing ground around!! I managed a keeper seabass, a few short fluke & some trash fish. The captain & mates worked hard, but it was just a little slow!! I can't wait 'till Sept. when the fishing is hot & the boats are empty!!

Bait or Lure: Spreader Bars/Green Machine

Information : Sailed out of Ocean City, MD on Richard Osborne's 50 Viking, Reel Direct. Boated a few Bonita, one Yellowfin (45 - 50 lb) and a 20 to 25 lb Dolphin. Lost a few and saw a very large White Marlin ripping along the surface, shaking it's head with a leader trailing out of it's mouth.
Sunset Marina is weighing in daily alot of 45 to 60 lb Yellowfin caught from the Carteret to Norfolk Canyons and Bluefin to 400 lbs from the Hambone area. Maybe that's a sign that the Hudson will start to heat up for my return back north in August!

Size: 50
Bait or Lure: green machines
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 70
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Justin Nighan and Mike Zajac had the Tom Bielicki charter out on Friday and had a somewhat slow but very eventful day on the troll. They stuck it out in the Spencer on Friday and ended up pulling for fish with one nice yellowfin and 2 throw backs but the trip was made when they trolled a mako. The shark came up and ate a green machine behind a bird and they did not know what they had on until it was next to the boat. With the gun locked up in the cabin and the mako chewing through the mono Justion and Mike both put a gaff in the 100 pound mako and pinned it against the boat. Once they got the gun they dispatched the shark and were back up on the troll.

We will have to search a little further south tomorrow and hopefully finish off the week on a high note. Good luck to those fishing the tuna tournament this weekend out of O.C.

He told me he started in the Spencer with a few other boats with only one knockdown to his credit. He mentioned that after several hours of trolling he decided to make a very smart move and start trolling to the Lindenkohl. A few miles outside of the Lindy John had nice readings from 150-200' down. He made several passes and was finally able to raise 'em and went a very respectable 6 for 7. Nice first trip to the edge Johnny!! Figured I'd help out enter the report for the crew since I couldn't get out to fish.

Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 60
Bait or Lure: hoos
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 70
Information : For those of you following our reports this one may be as informative as all those others with all those fish. It was bound to happen, considering we are only in the first week of July, but after 10 canyon trips under our belts we finally had a bad one. Capt. Phil Dulanie and mates Capt. Justin Nighan and Mike Zajac had the Sean Mowery charter from Holmdel out today and his daughter Ashley did boat her first tuna so that mission was accomplished. However, it was only one of two tuna caught all day. We headed back to the Carteret right where we left them biting Tuesday but everything was different. No birds, no bait, no slicks, no whales, no porpoises. We worked offshore to the 500 fathom then ran up the edge to the Toms with seeing anything. In the Toms we did get two bites and boated a 60 pound yellowfin and a short bluefin but that was it. After a dead morning trolling the green machines we went back to our usual spread of ballyhoo and jets and got both fish on hoos.

Trolling in the morning produced another yellowfin south of the Lindenkohl and pulled the hook on a good fish. Beautiful weather and loads of porpoises, whales, birds, squid boats and longline gear.

Had to pick through many shorts, as well as robins, skates and dogfish. Beginning of the outgoing seemed to be the most productive for me anyway. I ended up with three keepers.
