with little wind and slow drifts. Many schools of peanut bunker and small (less than
12 inches) blues chasing them. Bottom fishing was not productive at the north east
corner of the OC reef. Not a bite. The table top was equally abysmal except for two
blue fish, 18" each, to break the sea robin and skate monotomy. Not a single
flounder seen or heard of at the table top on the 31st. If you're going to the table
top in the next day or two, try trolling with smaller lures, you're likely to catch

head south finally finding the nice waater and some Mahi in it east of the Spencer.
Setting up on the chunk on the 100 fathom line we had small yellowfin under the boat
all night boating 4 but only keeping 3 tuna barely 25 pounds. Up on the troll in the
morning produced a fee more mahi up to 20 pounds and right before lines out we went 1
for 2 on 40 pound yellowfin. And believe it or not out of the half-dozen boats
within radio range this was high hook. Not good.

white marlin spread due to the abundance of them in the canyon the day before. We
had one 80 wide dwon the center. Of course at 8:50 we spoted big eye of the port bow
and one minute later we had 5 rods go down (all white marlin rigs, not the 80 wide of
course. We lost one right away and a second one a few minutes later. We faught
three of them for an hour when we lost two of them. We than continued to fight the
fifth big eye for another hour and a half when we finally boated it at 11:15. Two
and a half hours on a straight 50. The fish weighed in at 177 lbs and held first
place for an hour, until it was beat out by a 180 lb. big eye. Our fish took second
in the heaviest tuna category, we placed third in the tuna points category. Our
white marlin releases in addition to the tuna points allowd us to take the Grand
Championship in the tournament. Great team effort. The Lindenkohl Canyon is really
going off right now with huge Big Eye tuan and White Marlin as well as a few Blues.

dream as
the fishing was slow on the troll and on the chunk. We spent all Day Saturday on the
troll with only one 20 pound mahi to show for it. On the chunk we did not mark a
fish all night but did in fact boat one 80 pound yellowfin and half a dozen 10-20 pound
mahi-mahi. Up on the troll in the moring quickly produced a couple of small
yellowfin that we released and one 25 pounder that went in the box.

Water Temp.: 79
Information : fished the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna tournament for the first time
over the weekend. trolling on saturday we had 3 big eyes and 8 yellowfin. Or first
fish wiehged 145.3, about am hour later we then boated a 147 on a 45 gls in 20 min
and then an hour after that we boated a 176 after a 40 min fight on a 30. the only
problem was we didnt have any more cooler sapce for the 176 so we had to lay him on
the deck, which we later realized was a huge mistake and a loss of a few pounds
After the second day we had 1st 2nd and 3rd place with only one other small big eye
caught. even though the last day there was a 180 pounder that beat us we still had
enough tuna points to become grand tuna champion and took first place in the overall
tuna category. all said and done we finished with a total of close to 500 tuna
points which was at least double that of any other boat.

Water Depth: 100 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 78
Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie and mates Mike Zajac and Jay Richardello took the
John Andaloro charter from Westchester, NY out on the Canyon Runner for an
overnighter Sunday to Monday and put together a solid catch. Pulling into the
Lindencohl Canyon Sunday afternoon the action was slow for most of the day but as
soon as the last boat left we quickly put 1 longfin and 2 yellowfin in the boat up to
40 pounds which included one yellowfin release as it was small. Setting up on the
chunck we boated 2 yellowfin including one of 80 pounds and one small one and drifted
almost to the Carteret. We were quick to get up on the troll Monday morning working
our way back south and that decision proved correct as we quickly raised a White
Marlin to the pattern and Brad Andaloro (12) got his first release of a billfish. We
were then covered up by yellowfin over the next few hours and went 6 for 6, 5 for 6,
7 for 8, and 5 for 7 of yellowfin. Out of those we put 8 in the box between 25 and
35 pounds and released the rest. In between we raised another White Marlin to the
spreader bars and Jay Richardella baited him with a ballyhoo in front of a blue/white
moldcraft hooker and we had our second White Marlin release of the trip.
Unfortunately, with the fishing looking better the weather looks like it is going to
blow us out for the rest of the week.

While the tuna did not cooperate the billfish did. On our way trolling south from
the Toms Canyon our first fish of the day attached the flat line at 6:30am. The big
Blue Marlin inhaled a ballyhoo trolled behind and blue/white Ilander and the fight
was on. After 2 hours on a Penn International 50W on matching standup tackle Jay
leadered the 120 inch Blue estimated at 500-600 pounds and Mike billed it, unhooked
it, revived it and she swam away. The rest of the day was much less eventful as we
picked 4 mahi with 2 over 20 pounds and released only one small yellowfin.

Bottom fishing with minnows was not productive, not even one short, however the bay
was active with flounder. Heading back into the GE inlet, by the GE bell buoy, a
huge group of birds, and thank you Lord, a school of blues, 16", but fun and tasty.

Mate Darren Berry sighted the big blue marlin tailing. We turned the boat around and
the marlin made a move to the inside rigger then took the outside the fight was on.
With Peter Glover on the rod the fish was bought along side with Darren on the leader

own structure. Within 45 minutes we had two on. Mine got off but my friend was on. In
25 minutes the fish was in the boat. I rigged that line back up and put it back out.
Then went into the cabin to get a hook and I hear FISH ON! This fish was brutal it
took over an hour. It wrapped around the anchor, we were physically exhausted and
finally got it in. My partner and I said we had enough, and were done fishing by
10:40 am. Great day dispite rough seas. By the way all hits were just off the bottom.

Size: 14 - 24 inches
Bait or Lure: squid, spearing, sea robin, bluefish, bunker, mackerel, the kitchen
sink
Water Depth: 12 - 40 feet
Water Temp.: ~ 72
Information : Fished aboard my 16' Boston Whaler on Saturday with my friend, Johnny
C. Went back out again Sunday on my other boat to fish in the Sandy Hook Bay
Anglers' tourney with my dad and my brother. Saturday, I kept 4 keeper fluke: 17.5,
18.5, 19 and 22.5 inches. I released 2 other keepers between 16.5 and 17 inches with
at least 20 shorts going back over the side. Johnny kept 2 fluke at 17.5 and 19
inches, and he released another pair between 16.5 and 17 inches. Of course, Johnny
also released the usual mess of 20 or so shorts. Most of our fish were caught
between the rip and the beach near buoy # 13. However, we moved around frequently
trying to find a body of larger fish. We were using every type of bait available
including strip baits of fresh caught sea robins, bluefish, macherel and bunker along
with the typical squid/spearing combo. Best bite was the morning incoming tide which
accounted for 75% of our biggest fish. We caught an unbelievable number of large sea
robins and a few bluefish, but the majority of the day was spent catching and
releasing respectable fluke in the 15 - 16 inch size range. Got knocked around
pretty bad in the wind in the afternoon, so we moved inshore along officer's row
where we found lots of shorts between the pound nets and the coast guard station.
On Sunday, we started with a slow pick of fluke out near Sandy Hook Channel buoys # 3
and # 4. Started off with a couple of keepers 17 - 22 inches, a couple of sand
sharks, and a pair of 24 - 26 inch stripers. All of our fish were caught on mackerel
strips and fresh bluefish strips fished on fluke rigs with chartreuse or white/red
bucktail teasers. Later in the day, we moved over near the terminus of the Chapel
Hill Channel where we found a lot of fluke in the 16 - 18 inch size range. In fact,
at one point, I managed 5 successive keepers in five drops. We ended the day with no
tourney contenders, but we did end up keeping 12 fish between 17 and 24.5 inches. I
managed to hang the 24.5 incher on our last drift of the day. What a way to end a
great weekend of fishing with friends and family! Can't wait to get back out again
in the Flukemasters tourney this weekend ... Hopefully we will be ablle to find the
"Flukasaurus" that has been avoiding us so far this year.

Location: Shrewsbury, Flynns Knoll
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 6lbs
Bait or Lure: Umbrella Rigs
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Saturday July 13 we started out for Shrewsbury Rocks after passing
throught the Knoll area with hundreds of birds sitting calmly in the water.
Started trolling a mile or two before the rocks with umbrella rigs and caught one
Bluefish about eight lbs. We then hooked something that gave Harold a real fight. I
thought that he had at least three large blues on an umbrella rig, but it turned out
to be a large skate or other ray type fish that was foul hooked in the end of its
wing . I would guess about 20 lbs . Harold gave it his all and as we attempted to cut
it free the hook bent and pulled out. After that we didn't catch anything until we
passed the Knoll on the way in and this time the birds were active and we caught a
small striper and a small bluefish before heading in to the dock
All in all a poor fishing day except for the tussle with the skate.

spread within a minute or so we had her hooked on a 30w Tiagra! Fought her
for an hour and a half or more. Saw the leader just out of reach about 7 times.
Finally the hook pulled next to the boat, but not before she wore out
all four of us on board and gave us and every boat within sight one hell
of a show. What a fish!!!!! Still working on how much she weighed, estimated length
was 8 feet not counting the bill.

amount of fish we caught or put in the box. Another great weather day and the fish
bit well. First drift on the 600 line to 50 ' produced 5 keepers. We tried it again
with only shorts and some nine seabass. Moving north to Longbranch worked out well
with two fish back to back in the six pound class. Ended the day with 12 keepers and
alot of shorts for action.

Specie: Fluke
Size: 18"
Bait or Lure: Squid / Killie
Water Depth: 60ft

Information : The Fluke fishing on the Klondike really turned off. I think Chris from
Chicken of the Sea was right about the commerical guys cleaning out the fish. Last
Sunday I had 17 keepers between 4 guys and over 80 throw backs and this week we got 3
fluke and one keeper. We moved in and out and still did not find the fish. Join the
RFA, JCAA or one of the recreational fishing organizations so we will have a voice.
Next year I hear we may have a 17 1/2 inch min. size. We make all the sacrifices and
still get beat up!!!

Location: 1-2 miles off Long Branch
Fishing Method: Drift
Specie: Fluke
Size: 2 1/2 lbs
Bait or Lure: Spearing - Squid Combo
Water Depth: 50 ft
Water Temp.: ?
Information : An almost total lack of drift led to a slow afternoon's fishing. Most
of the time the ocean was like a lake and the lines were going straight down. There
weren't too many fluke caught, but a few drifts over rough bottom produced some
action with sea bass. My lone fluke of the trip just barely missed out on the pool
money. Thanks to Capt. Hank and mates for staying out the extra half hour to make up
for the slow bridge opening.
