Water Temp.: 72
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Brad Burgess and Mike Zajac took the Canyon Runner out for the first overnighter of the year with the Joe Renaud and Dave Babish charter from Allentown, PA. Arriving at the Hudson Sunday afternoon the weekend boat traffic must have pushed the fish down and we did not get a bit on the troll all afternoon. Setting up on the chunk we anchored in 500 feet of water and started tossing the meat. By 10:00 a.m. we were picking at 40-70 pound yellowfin putting 4 in the boat by 1:00 a.m. Then the bite turned on as we proceeded to go 15 for 25 in the next 3 hours. With 19 yellowfin in the box by dawn we pulled the hook and went on the troll. We quickly were covered up with longfin and put 6 in the boat. With 25 fish on ice the charter decided to head for the dock.

Angler Name : CJ Walsh

Boat Name: Tiger
Date Fished: July 30th
Location: Hooper
Fishing Method: Chunking
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: 125 pounds 62"
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 136'
Water Temp.: 74.3 degrees
Information : What a day! Boated the aforementioned small medium on a 50# stand-up outfit around 10:30 and released another 55" around 12:15. Chick birds, slicks, turtles and even a small whale proved this spot to be the hot lump this weekend. These fish are not affected by the closing of the school bluefin season and new fish seem to be moving through the area everyday. Cape May boats had boated fish in this length class that weighed 20 to 40 pounds more in the last week. Lots of sandeels on the bottom and big diamond jigs picked a few fish in the fleet. Fishing structure seemed to be the key.

Boat Name: Carcharodon
Date Fished: July 30
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Troll
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: To 60 lbs
Bait or Lure: Ballyhood Chugger Chains & Reel Seat Spreaders
Water Depth: 300-500
Water Temp.: 67 (yes!) to 73
Information : Mates Chris & David Seebode worked the cockpit for Dave Piatkowski& first time canyon tripper Andy Rich and party and once again we were not disappointed. However, upon arriving at the numbers from the day before, there must have been 50 boats trolling in the dark @ 4:30 The pressure from all the traffic pushed the bait down, caused "skittish" fish & numerous crashes & knockdowns without hookups. We checked all our hooks (always a good idea), picked a large Yellowfin & decided to go off on our own. Crossing to the East Side over "The Bombs", we started seeing Mahi free-jumping & our first pass of an otherwise ignored set of pots produced dozens of Mahi trying to eat our baitswe kept one, released a score on three trolls & kept heading East. When I spotted sheer water next to our 1' chop I was curious.. good thing, as there was a 5 degree break that produced a venerable smorgasbord of bait. With less than a half-hour of trolling time left, we immediately put three Longfins in the box to cap off a surprisingly pleasant day of weather & fishing. Andy, hope your Dad enjoys the pictures & the fish & we hope to see you again!

Boat Name: CABORITA
Date Fished: 7/29/00
Location: North of Shark River Inlet
Fishing Method: Fishfinder Rig
Specie: Fluke
Size: 21"
Bait or Lure: Mackerel Strips
Water Depth: 65 ft
Water Temp.: 70/71
Information : Fished with Dad, Jeff Shinker and Bill Myshka this past Saturday. Jeff Shinker who fishes with us maybe 3 times a year had the first keeper in the boat within the first 15 minutes. We found a nice area North of Shark River Inlet and began catching jumbo Sea Bass. Jeff then hooked into a beautiful 21", Fluke , I followed with 2 fish over 20", and Bill followed with 2 over 18". My Dad continued to catch Sea Bass. Mackerel strips were the bait of choice. The larger Fluke and jumbo Sea Bass could not resist them. Someone would catch a Frigate Mackerel and I would immediately filet them and start cutting strips. We wound up with 10 keeper Fluke, one Bluefish and 15 nice sized Sea Bass. Many of the 10" Sea Bass were released as were the sub legal Fluke. As much as I hate to admit this, Jeff Shinker took the pool with the 21" Fluke (he may have had the largest Sea Bass as well). Overall a great day fishing.

Specie: Dolphin
Size: 14lb
Bait or Lure: small feathers and clark spoons

Caught and released several 2-5 lb blues and false albacore, but the surprise of the trip was a 14lb dolphin! Ofcourse it hit the smallest rod on the boat spooled with 12lb test, so the fight lasted over 25 minutes! I dont know who bled more, the fish or the angler.

Location: Monmouth Beach
Fishing Method: Drifting
Specie: Fluke

Bait or Lure: Spearing/Squid
Water Depth: 30 ft.
Water Temp.: 70 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula ran his Bounty Hunter out of Clarks Landing Marina up to the Monmouth Beach area with the John Adamcik charter. Not having done any Fluke fishing up north this season and hearing stories of how inconsistant the Fluke fishery could be day to day, we were pleasantly surprised when we found a patch of rough bottom in 30 ft. of water which gave up our first keeper of the day within 10 min. of stopping. We had a steady pick for most of the day with 22 keepers going into the box with a minimum of throwbacks. Several of the fish were in the 2 to 3 lb. range with the largest tipping the electronic scale at 7 1/4 lbs. The fish was landed by Angelo D'Allesio from East Hanover. The rough bottom also produced 52 nice size Seabass.

Information : Got to the Canyon at 9:30 AM, millions of boats trolling a small area of the West Wall, went to east wall trolling ballyhoo, had some huge dolphin but lost them. Around noon, most of the boats on the west wall took off for home, ( mostly Long Islanders ) so we through out a simple spread of 4 green machines trolling fast, as soon as we hit the west wall we had a knock down, then another quick knock down, then a mosterous splash and an hour and a half later, a nice big-eye came to the boat. First one ever. Made it worth the torture of driving out to the canyon in my 25 Grady. Nice weather and perfect gulf stream water. Sushi time.

After that it turned into a good pick as we released another 16 longfin ending the day with 38 tuna between 30-80 pounds. The fish hit bars, ballys and Jets.

Information : Captain ED Babin of the Pamela Marie out of Wildwood, NJ hooked us up on the fish of a life time. Hooked the fish at 9:55am on the bottom using whole butterfish and 30# leader on 80# line. Had to pass off the fish between 4 men (Ed, John, Jerry and Don) many times over the 1 hour and 45 minute fight. The fish crossed our anchor no less than 15 times causing us to dance around the deck of the 28 ft. Grady. At the end we gaffed the Bluefin Tuna but were unable to lift the giant over the side of the boat because the gaff was bending. We had manuver the fish throught the stern door. Once onboard the fish measured 64". Thanks Ed for a great trip.

Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Brad Burgess and Mike Zajac were back in the Hudson Canyon on Monday and basically had the place all to themselves. Fishing with the Phil Rosenbaum charter from Houston, Texas we quickly put 4 longfin in the boat at first light trolling the east wall. However, the bait, birds and whales disappeared as soon as the 4th fish was in the boat and the longfin went with them. Moving over to the other side we found the life again and boated another 8 Longfin to end the day with a dozen. Jets and Ballyhoo were once again the hot baits and with no crowd we were once again putting a double digit catch of tuna together for our charter.

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: July 23
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: up to 45 pounds
Bait or Lure: Jets & Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 71
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Brad Burgess and Mike Zajac had their first slow day of the canyon season Sunday after 12 productive trips to the edge. However, as usual, a crowd of boats was the culprit. Fishing where there was a hot bite on Saturday (The East Wall) was at least 75 boats all trolling on top of each other. Needless to say, the fish did not bite on Sunday and we finally had to leave the area and search for a new body of fish. Trolling the west wall we quickly found yellowfin and put 2 in the boat out of 5 hits within a 30 minute time span. However after we put the second fish in the boat we were surrounded again by the crowd and the fish never came up again. I can not stress this enough - take a day off during the week and fish the canyon when there are only a few boats it will improve your catch by 500% (See our report for Monday July 24).

Water Depth: 200 - 280 ft
Water Temp.: 72.5 - 73.7
Information : Started about 7:30 Had one Dolphin on a weed line then went to the hot dog to chunk. Some bluefin and yellowfin were there but we could not come up with one.Other boats had a few.We then went back on the troll,in 30 fathoms of water we found a trawler working and when we crossed his stern we hooked up a double header. It was nuts because my brother and I were the only ones aboard. He had to hold both rods as they took off line and I had to clear the other six lines plus teasers. Some how we were able to gaff both the fish and went home happy. otherwise it was a slow day. (Point of caution) Out there on the weed line about 5 mi NE of the hot dog I found a 30 - 40 FT TELEPHONE POLE STANDING ON EDGE WITH ONLY ONE FOOT OUT OF THE WATER, IT LOOKED LIKE IT COULD HAVE BEEN 1000 POUNDS. KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN. GOOD FISHING TO ALL.

Information : Charlie Messano Sr. & Jr. & friends were aboard for an overnite troll trip to the Hudson Canyon. Acting on the previous days reports of better water at the 100 Square, we left the Brielle Yacht Club at Midnight, treated to the calmest of waters and a beautiful moon directly off our bow for the trip out! Arriving to find an armada of boats on the radar, we chose to drop our lines about 6 miles short and were rewarded with a few Mahi-Mahi (surprising any were around considering the water temps we've had in the Hudson), a Skippy and a baby Bigeye, as best we could tell before releasing. One really nice 70 lb.Yellowfin for Charlie Sr. put him to the test, while Charlie Jr. pulled a 45 pounder for his efforts. Reel Seat "Greatful Dead" spreader bars got the nod as usual, although Ballyhood "Tandem Tuna Machines" deserve honorable mention for making the spread distinctive. To say it was a "picky" bite would be putting it mildly, as many Captains were scratching their heads back at the dock. We had abundant life beneath and above with birds, whales and porpoises aboundingwe just couldn't raise the Tuna. Oh well, that's why it's called "fishing".

We pulled in the lines and left the far rigger baits bouncing in and out of the water while we took turns removing the wrapped spreader bar. Imagine our surprise when 25 feet from where we were diving under the boat a 60# yellowfin decided to pick one of the bouncing mullets. It led to a rather chaotic and hilarious scene. We fought the fish for 10 minutes had him on top just beyond our reach and lost him on his second run. At least it's a good memory. Got in late on both engines as we were able to get the spreader removed. It is unfortunate that we lost the afternoon bite as it appeared it was going to be a good one. One final note, the tuna had nothing in it's stomach. For all you lovers of dragging natural baits, 50% of my fish this year have come on swimming mullet.

I did get one bite that never got hooked. Talked to a number of surf fisherman on 7/22 and 7/23 and no one caught a single fish. One guy spent the entire day moving south on the beach and on the bay side and didn't get a bite. It was a very slow weekend at Island Beach.

Specie: Weakfish
Size: 14-22"
Bait or Lure: Crab / Squid
Water Depth: 12
Water Temp.: 74
Information : Had my best customer fly in from Hagerstown, MD for a day of fishing. After picking them up at Millville airport, we ran to the spot Ed made famous ... The Squirrel's Nest and we had constant action. Lots of shorts, but we managed a cooler full of weakies. As a bonus, my customer nailed 3 fat flounder including a 22"er. Due to the constant action, I spent the day baiting hooks, taking fish off, and untangling tangles and birdnests. Glad to do it since I would not have this boat without this customer. They even pitched in and cleaned the boat while I did the fish. Thanks again to my fishing buddy Ed Holmes for turning me on to the Squirrel's Nest. That spot NEVER fails.

Size: 150 lbs
Bait or Lure: Ballyhood Chugger Chain
Water Depth: 300
Water Temp.: 67
Information : Ron Reinhardt treated his son Jeff to a rather special 24th birthday present. Leaving Thursday night in a fair heave, we were treated to a beautiful sunrise, nice trolling weather & seas and a half-hour fight with an estimated 150 lb Bigeye Tunaand yes, it was Jeff's turn! He gamely fought the creature for a half-hour on a 50b standup outfit, with the Captain and crew working diligently for a successful landing. The beast "charged" the boat ala' Kamikaze style three times, and came up to the surface twice, swam around like a marlin & then dove for a couple hundred yards. (When finished with the fight, the "track" on my GPS Chartplotter looked like 20 concentric circles over a couple hundred yards of ground that we covered!) Talk about good eating! A Ballyhood "Chugger Chain" gets the nod for enticing the fish to eat. We look forward to seeing Ron, Jeff and friends again in September for a chunk-n-troll! Special thanks to Captain Jeff "Tuna Tango" Dangelmajer & Scott ("His Lady") Lisowski for working the trip. Always a gas, boys!

A move to the deep water of Ambrose Channel only produce another short for myself.A drift along a tide line at the top of the Reach Channel went fishless, but a long drift along the green side of the same channel further back into the bay produced a steady pick of keepers for the boat where Jason & I again put a keeper in the box as well as another short for me.

Bait or Lure: Ava 47's
Water Depth: N/A
Water Temp.: N/A
Information : We took a Friday off hoping for a light crowd on the big Jamaica. There were about 55 - 60 folks on board. The morning proved to be a very slow pick of a few blues. However, during the afternoon beginning at 12:15, we had constant flurries like the good old days. Six to ten fish were on at a time. I had 4 consecutive casts that hooked fish. The blues were big for this time of year. I was lucky enough to catch the poll winner at 15 pounds. The others probably averaged 8-12 pounds. As for totals, brother Joe caught his 10 fish limit while I had 7. He just wouldn't allow me to catch up. We lost 7 - 8 fish in the tangles and with some jumping blues. Everyone caught fish. I'd say the average was 3-5 fish. The experienced guys were near 10 a piece. Capt. Howard stayed out about an extra hours because the bite came late. We did leave them biting. The weather and the fish cooperated for a very good day of bluefishing. Good Fishing!!!!!

Water Depth: 10 - 40'
Water Temp.: ?
Information : Took the PM trip on the Sea TIger. The action was slow in the usual spots in the Bay. Capt. Hal moved to the channel off the hook around 4:30 and put us into fish. Now we weren't banging 'um but the action did pick up. There were about 35 - 40 folks on board and I'd guess that there were 20 keepers. The Sea Hunter made a move to Keansburg while the rest of the fleet stayed down bay. Anyone with a report from there? Let's hang in there, it has to pick up!

Specie: Weakfish
Size: 2 keepers and spikes
Bait or Lure: sandworms
Water Depth: 8-15'

Information : Had a great day of weakfishing though it was limited due to time and boat traffic. The key today was worms and getting out before the boat traffic scares the weaks. We left at around 11 and fished for a few hours and caught several keepers and many throwbacks on sandworms before the fishing slowed because the boats spooked the fish. There are some small schools of Bluefish chasing spearing. One bluefish was caught and others bite through our worms. Snappers are also very numerous around docks.

After a few hours, went on the troll but we knew we had no shot. After spending $160 on fuel and bait, the day was saved by a $3.50 pint of minnows when we stopped at the 60ft slew on the way home and picked up 8 nice flounder in an hour.

Size: 13 - 21 inches
Bait or Lure: squid & killie combo
Water Depth: 12 - 50 feet
Water Temp.: ~ 70 degrees
Information : Fished with Al Romanelli aboard his Miss Shelly. Started the day fishing with killie/squid combination. Our first drifts were on the edge of the rip, just inside the hook. During the first several drifts, I picked-up five keeper fluke [ smallest was 17" & biggest was 21".] Moved from the hook over into Raritan Reach to try some areas without as much boat traffic. Made several long drifts near the Old Orchard light, and also a drift or two on Flynn's Knoll between the mussel beds. Didn't get a single bite in these areas! Moved back over to the nude beach area of the hook where I managed to get one more 17" keeper fluke. Final tallies for the day were: 6 keepers, at least 6 shorts, and several sea robins for me ... a few shorts and a few sea robins ... and only a few shorts and a few sea robins for Al. That was it. Not exactly dynamite results. Oh well, we are hoping to get back out to redeem ourselves on Saturday afternoon.

By 10AM we had 11 Longfin up to 40 lbs. in the fishbox, trolling a mix of small Jets, Tuna Clones and Ballyhoo. At 10:30 the ocean went dead and the bite ended for most of the 30+ boats in the area. Fishing Method: chumming
Specie: S-Fin Mako Shark
Size: 100 lbs and 60 lbs.
Bait or Lure: bluefish / mackeral
Water Depth: 240-150
Water Temp.: 69-70
Information : Played hooky and fished today with my good buds "Johnny Jetpilot" and "Mako Mike", one of the finest crews to ever fish with me on the Finest Kind. Running out to the Glory Hole was a bit sloppy in 15 to 20 knot winds from the NE...what happened to the "5 to 10 knot light and variable" winds that were forecast? I stopped a few miles short of the waypoint and trolled a bit looking for Bluefin, but all we picked up on the troll were HUGE bluefish that were so aggressive, they hit the tuna lures trolled at 2000 rpm (8 mph). We kept one for bait, released another 4 and pulled in the expensive tuna lures before the hoards of bluefish destroyed them. Set up our chum slick on the NE side of the Glory Hole and drifted down the wall, across the deep and up the opposite wall. The first Mako hit after we had drifted over an hour or so. He put up a terrific fight for me and did a spectacular 8 foot jump right beside the boat... what a beautiful fish! Rather than killing this magnificent animal, I decided to release him to fight another day. Some mighty tasty Mako steaks were allowed to swim away, but since he was only 5-6 feet long and probably weighed around 100 lbs....he's still got A LOT of growing to do. The second Mako hit after another half hour or so, this one was smaller, approx 4 feet long and 60-70 lbs. After a good fight on my light tackle, John expertly brought him to boatside. There was no question about releasing it, but unfortunately, he was hooked deep(although he was not bleeding) so we cut the wire close to his mouth, and released him...hope he makes it. On the way back in we passed through a big school of bluefish breaking water all around us. I broke out the flyrod and the ultralight spinning rods and we really had a blast catching and releasing these 8 to 10 pound blues on fresh water trout sized tackle! All in all a great day...beats the hell outta spending the day at work for sure!

Angler Name : Shawn Mallory
E-Mail : njcharter@aol.com
Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: July 11
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Albacore Tuna
Size: 30-50
Bait or Lure: Reel Seat Mini-Mamba Bars
Water Depth: 500
Water Temp.: 70
Information : Just when you thought the canyon could not get any better it does. Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Brad Burgess (Sea Bright) and Mike Zajac (Wall) had the Shawn Mallory charter from Middletown, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Tuesday and loaded the boat with Longfin. The action was non-stop as soon as we arrived and with only 2 anglers we were lucky to have our 2 mates on board. The first hour was spent landing singles and doubles and we had 10 in the boat before 7:30 a.m. (we arrived in the canyon at 6:30 a.m.), then it got very very good. The next 4 hours were spent with 5 to 6 fish on at a time, all the time, with only the two anglers and two mates in the cockpit. However, few fish were lost and we even managed a 7 bagger and an 8 bagger. At the end of the day, we had boated 45 Longfin, releasing a large majority, and taking the rest for the dinner table and/or to be canned for the winter. While almost anything we put in the water worked, Reel Seat Mini-Mamba Bars worked the best.

Boat Name: "Mirage"
Date Fished: 7/11/00
Location: Glory Hole and Chicken Canyon
Fishing Method: Drift chumming w/ rod & reel
Specie: S-Fin Mako Shark
Size: #1-50-60 lbs.-#2-80-90 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Fresh bluefish,mackerel,squid
Water Depth: 180 to 270 ft.
Water Temp.: 71.4 to 73.9 degrees
Information : Had the Dave Danko charter out from Brick & Pt.Pleasant on a Shark trip.Caught alot of Bluefish to start and at about 11 AM we had a small Mako jump over the Starboard stern covering boards and back in the water! What a sight-saw her coming down the chum-slick chasing bluefish on top of the water! Next thing I saw was the leap right before she would have hit the boat. Almost landed on the covering board-but made it back into the water safely. The next thing we know is that she took a 30' bait (fresh Blue fillet).Brought to boatside and put a tag into her. That Mako was fought by George Merz of Brick, and weighed an estimated 80 to 90 lbs.Another hit on a 60' bait (mack) and Dave Kennedy of Point brought this one in for a tag- that one was about 50-60 lbs.,estimated.All in all a very good day, except for the sizes of the Mako's. They were both females.

Killed 'em on Saturday with 13 fish better than 3lbs and as big as 5. Most in the 18-20 inch range with the big daddy 27". 2 1/2" thick -- nice fillets... Weaks are still in the inlet at night on the incoming tide, but with the fluking so good it's hard to even slow down until we're 17 or 18 miles offshore.

Water Temp.: 78-81 F
Information : Fished the warm water outflow from the power plant. The Weaks where on the temperature break from the warmwater and at the same time on the bottom slope from 8-11 ft. Had to stay away from the boat traffic, it scares the fish. Strips of squid on sand bass rigs seemed to work better than other rigs.Had 2 keepers, but caught lots of shorts. The southwest wind helped the drift. Went to the lighthouse, the tide was 2 hours late, i swear that the inlet has its own tide table. For some reason the tides never match the standard table. Saw a few fluke caught in the channel and caught a skate about 5 lbs. The wind came up from the south at 20 knots. Nice day not many fish.

Boat Name: Miss Shelly
Date Fished: 7/8/00
Location: Flynn's Knoll
Fishing Method: Drifting Clams
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: NONE
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 16 - 35 feet
Water Temp.: ~70
Information : Went with Al Romanelli aboard his Miss Shelly [21' Mako] for a day of saltwater angling in Sandy Hook Bay. We were joined by my friend, Craig Kimble from Williamsport, PA. Based upon Al's success during the past two weeks, we took only clams (no bunker) with us when we left the dock. Started fishing with clams at 6:00 am. We drowned clams across almost every inch of Flynn's Knoll. By 1:00 pm, we had one small sand shark, one clear-nosed skate, one other strike, and about $30 worth of drowned clams. THAT IS IT - The clam fishing sucked! There were boats anchored all over the knoll. Probably only saw 3 nets dipped all day. We should have took a hint from the radio reports coming across the VHF all morning ... Everyone was asking "Where's the fish?" Did see a few boats that were having a blast hauling bluefish one after another on bunker, but we did not bring any bunker along. Tried trolling a Stretch +25 and Craig lost two fish. Started fluking with squid/spearing near the nude beach at 1:30 pm. I finally got the skunk out of the boat when I caught the fist keeper of the day, a solid 17" fluke. Within the next three hours, Craig caught 3 other keepers [ 16 -17"] and a very nice [23"] doormat. Craig and I also caught and released 2-3 shorts each. Al ended the day with one short [~ 14"]. At the end of the day it was pretty apparent that we should have given up on the stripers earlier in the day. We ended up missing out on some prime fulke drifting while we were trying to catch stripers that were obviously not there, or not feeding. Oh well, we'll be back to try again later this week. - JC

Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: up to 2 l/2 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 80 ft.
Water Temp.: 67 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula ran his Bounty Hunter down to the 20 mile wrecks southeast of Manasquan Inlet. Again, the unexpected north wind made fishing conditions difficult. We did manage to fill 1/2 of the fishbox with Seabass up to 2 l/2 lbs. We spent the last 2 hours of the day drifting for Fluke in 40 ft. of water off Ortley Beach. Plenty of short Fluke with an occasional keeper. It was about a 5 to l ratio on the Fluke as we only managed 6 legal size fish.

Anyway we got out to our first spot, and as soon as a line hits the water we have a weakfish 21" We stayed there for 3 hours and caught another 70-80, mostly nice fish. 3 in the 3-4 pound class with a lot of 2 lb'rs in there. We pull anchor and head for the 19 bouy to drift for fluke. When we get out there we were in 27ft of water and we were not getting anything. On the next drift I moved out in 40 ft and we started to nail them. We picked up 6 keepers. The largest was 5 pounds 1 ounce. The others were between 16-18" I did not weigh any others. We ended up catching over 100 fish and we kept about 20-25. I sent them each home with a nice bag of filets

Information : Fished with my dad and two daughters for only a couple of hours in the afternoon. The tide was just ending and the north east wind was a gift. We ended up with 11 keepers and a bunch of shorts. Shannon was high hook on the boat. Caitlyn also did very well. Frank with his two pools also did very well. Me, I hacked. Frank and I fished almost evey day this week in the bay and just could't seem to put a catch together. So I'm not sure if today it was the perfect north east winds, or that Shannon and Caitlyn was on the boat. oh-ya Shannon is 8 years old and Caitlyn is 11.

Bait or Lure: lures
Water Depth: 180-230
Water Temp.: 72
Information : Got out to the tower about 7:30am and put the lures over the side - jet heads, daisy chains, cedars etc. We pulled just about everything we had on the boat without a tuna hit. At one point all seven rods were doubled over with fish hooked up only to find monster blues chewing on our expensive tuna lures. We trolled around the Tower, the Bacardi and Bidevind with no tuna to be had. The water was crystal clear and blue/green, temps around 72. We'll try again. Had a great porpoise show on the way home - stopped the boat to a pod of around 50-60 adults with small young 3-4ft long. They were jumping clear out of the water right next to the boat! Tight Lines!

Information : We dove on the Sea Girt Reef on the 5th and again on the 7th. The water was clean and there were lots of sea Bass, ling, blackfish up to 5lbs, fluke up to 7 1/2 lbs, and at night we saw loads of winter flounder that went up to what looked like 4lbs. I wish they were in season because I could have cleaned up. I generally see the flounder at the deeper wrecks at this time of the year and I don't know if its normal to see them in this close at this part of the summer. I'm going to try to head offshore this weekend to see how the deepwater sites are so I let you all know when I get back. I also hit one of the sites that I dive off the beach and in 30 feet of water off Seaside Park I got a 10 1/4 Blackfish and saw many more the same size or bigger.

JIM-MO DID GET A SLAMMER OF A HIT BUT DUE TO HIS FOOLISH KNOTTING STYLE.... IT BROKE OFF.... BY THE KNOT! WE DECIDED TO HIT THE BUG LIGHT FOR FLUKE.... NOT A BITE.... OF COURSE THE LACK OF WIND WAS THE CAUSE! WE HIT THE MOUTH OF THE SCHREWSBURY AND GOT NO WIND BUT ALL THE BOATS FROM TRAWLERS AND YACHTS TO TUNA TOWERING BIG GAME BOATS CREATED ENOUGH WAKES TO GET US MOVING! 2 TO 5 KNOT WINDS KICKED UP EVERY 25 MINUTES TO HELP THINGS OUT. IT DID MANAGED TO BRING THREE KEEPERS OVER THE GUNNEL! ONCE THE WINDS SHIFTED SOUTHEAST.... THE FISHING DROPPED LIKE A TON OF BRICKS.... TOTALLY SHUT OFF! ALTHOUGH THE FUN WAS INTENSE; THE CIRCLING WATER DUE TO THE TIDES MADE IT KIND OF ANNOYING... BUT HEY... AT LEAST WE DID NOT GET SKUNKED! WATCH YOUR TIDES AND DEPEND ON THE WIND FOR MOVEMENT.... OR ELSE PRAY FOR HEAVY BOAT TRAFFIC TO GET YOU MOVING.... WHAT? SOUTH EAST WINDS A FACTOR????? DON'T EVEN BOTHER DROPPING THE BOAT INTO THE WATER! TIGHT LINES....

Trick was to find the birds waiting for their next meal, and just stay on 'em. We did and were rewarded with a nice catch of Yellowfins. But I would call the bite "picky" at best. However, the ride home was one of the top five worst I've ever had, with the South winds producing a decent heave with the tops blowing off each waveit was really wet because of the angle coming home

Water Depth: 300
Water Temp.: 70
Information : The crew of the Canyon Runner took out their wives, daugthers and girlfriends on Sunday for a fun trip and experienced the best day we have ever had trolling the Northeast Canyons. First off, it was flat calm, not a puff of wind. We left the dock at 4:00 a.m. and were back by 3:00 p.m., we were only fising 4 hours. Headed for just inshore of Toms Canyon we ran into the fish 8 miles northwest of the tip and for 3 hours we had fish on at all times. They would hit anything but Jets and spreader bars produced best. We could not troll 500 yards without hooking up and always had at least 4 fish on at a time. If we were fighting fish and forgot to reel in one of the lines that were not hit, it would soon be engulfed by a yellowfin. Every fish was 35 pounds or better (most were between 50 and 70 pounds and we had 5 around 80 pounds). In total we caught 33 yellowfin and 2 longfin, lost another 15, and best of all, the women (none of whom weigh more than 115 pounds) caught 90% of the fish.

Boat Name: Carcharodon
Date Fished: July 2
Location: Toms Canyon
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: to 60 lbs
Bait or Lure: Squid Bars, Jets, Chains, Zukers
Water Depth: 120-220
Water Temp.: 67.5-70
Information : The most unbelievable sight I've ever seen! It was like watching a Michael Folkes filming a Tuna boil off Mexico or Southern California! Similar to Saturday, but about 10 times as good! We had 'em to 60 lbs and limited out in less than two hours. Once again, we had to "drive over them" to get out of the Toms and leave 'em biting & jumping! If the amount of bait, fish and general conditions hold, we will see a season similar to '88, & that will be nice for all of us.

Bait or Lure: Bunker
Water Depth: 100 ft.
Water Temp.: 68 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula took his Bounty Hunter back to the Bluefish grounds 14 miles to the Southeast of Manasquan Inlet. The Roger Jachts charter only had a slow pick in the first hour of fishing and it appeared the situation was not going to improve as more boats joined the fleet. We decided to run another 7 miles to the South and it proved to be a smart call as we found schools of Bluefish feeding on Rainfish and Sand Eels. The action was non stop for 3 hours as the charter put 40 Blues in the fishbox and released another 50+ fish.

Boat Name: Irish Rogue III
Date Fished: 7/1/2000
Location: Wilmington Canyon
Fishing Method: troll
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40lb
Bait or Lure: Artificials, ballys
Water Depth: 300-800+
Water Temp.: 71-76
Information : lines in the water at the tip of the wilmington by 8:30am. great temp break and schools of bait everywhere...yet not a tuna to be found. We worked the tip and base of the canyon for 6 hours and only pulled out a 40lb yellowfin and a 15 lb dolphin. trolled everything from naked ballys to daisy chains. At least 122 other boats on site working just as hard with the same degree of success. The only upside was the calmest canyon day i have seen in years. At 7pm running the 80 miles back to Cape May inlet, there was barely a ripple. Cruised in at 30+mph. Someone please explain to me why the tuna were in the Lindenkohl and Carteret where the temp break was all the way in to the 40fathom line when the temp break at the Wilm was right on the west wall and schools of bait were everywhere!!!!

We had to "leave 'em jumping & biting" and saw breaking Tuna all the way from the Triple Wrecks to the Glory Hole. It was just a preview of what was to come on Sunday!
