FISHING REPORTS FOR JANUARY 2004

NAUTICALNET MARINE CHARTERS

Angler Name : Jono
E-Mail : stackchin@yahoo.com
Boat Name: Big Jamaica
Date Fished: 01/31/04
Location: NJ 70 miles out
Fishing Method: wreck fishin
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: 6"
Bait or Lure: clams/rubber jigs
Water Depth: 200-300 feet
Water Temp.: 50 (maybe slightly below)
Information : In one word - bad. This was one of the most brutal trips ever. We spent six hours to get out to the fishing grounds. Seas were at ten to fourteen feet with rolling waves and slight breakers at the top. Ice formed on eyelets while fishing. Water was so rough,it washed the deck a couple of times. We used 16-20 ounces of lead, and still had trouble feeling the bottom consistently. Rough water also made it difficult to feel any bites. A lot of people quit early and took refuge in the cabin. Others got sick. I managed one sea bass (four inches, what a jumbo!) and a doggie. My brother had a few doggies and a couple of congos. My father had one polly (four or five pounds). Most other people had less. It didn't seem like the fish were really there. Maybe the water was too cold. It seemed okay according to the temperature maps I've seen on-line. I heard of one legal sea bass. We ended up coming in a couple of hours early due to poor conditions. Six of the next seven hours were spent bouncing up and down on a hard bench. Ice formed on the fishing poles and line that were splashed by the ocean. By the end of the trip, they looked like frozen harpoons. I've never seen salt water freeze so quickly. Take a lesson - people who used mono had more ice than those with braided line. Captain Howard gave everyone coupons on the way off - that was the right thing to do.

Angler Name : Tony C.
E-Mail : tcava1@hotmail.com
Boat Name: Big Jamaica
Date Fished: January 18, 2004
Location: Off Shore wrecks
Fishing Method: Bottom
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: Up to 3+ lbs
Bait or Lure: Clam
Water Depth: 250 Ft.
Water Temp.:
Information : A bit of a late report; Out on the Big Jamaica this past Sunday. Rained the entire time. Capt. made a great effort to get us on the fish hitting 4 or 5 spots and readjusting. Morning was a bit slow but after the first move things improved. I ended the day with 13 decent SeaBass and 3 good ling in the cooler. Also landed some very nice porgys but had to toss them back as their season is closed. Caught 1 doggie and 1 Silver eel as well. Most anglers were short of the 25 bass limit but I am sure there were those who did limit. Pools went to a pollock of about 14 lbs and a white hake of about 10 lbs. A wet and raw day, perhaps we would have been better off with the snow but I would have complained about that as well. Going again on Feb 6.

Boat Name: Calypso
Date Fished: Jan. 3, 2004
Location: Barnegat
Fishing Method: Bottom
Specie: Blackfish
Size: Up to 11 pounds
Bait or Lure: green crab
Water Depth: 60
Water Temp.:
Information : On Saturday (1/3/04), we had what has to be one of the most remarkable days of black fishing ever. We were out with Captains Ken Dubman (K-Kat) and Jim Rivelli aboard Capt. Jim’s Calypso out of Brielle. These guys love the black fish. We proceeded down to Barnegat where we had an absolute all out Tog slaughter. Every guy on the boat landed about 30 tog including one 11 pounder landed by Ralph Marra. Needless to say we limited out quickly and did a lot of catch and release. It was John Kipping’s first black fishing trip. He must think we were yanking his chain when we told him that black fishing was hard. Oh, and the weather was not bad for January. What a day.

Angler Name : Andy Sokol
E-Mail : Skolmann@aol.com
Boat Name: Fins On Feathers
Date Fished: 1/3/04
Location: Scotland
Fishing Method: Anchor
Specie: Tautog
Size: 10-19"s
Bait or Lure: Green Crabs & Clam Strips
Water Depth: 70'
Water Temp.:
Information : What a way to start a new year with balmy early January weather, light winds (which did make anchoring somewhat of difficult)& biting fish. This boat is amazing fishing platform with plenty of room for a 6 man charter. Super fast, little to no rock, simply a great fishing boat. We anchored up on a sticky piece of bottom east of Scotland Light and with the exception of making a few minor anchor adjustments we stayed there all day. Throughout the day we had a steady pick of both tog & ling. There was a high number of tog in the 13.5-13.99 inch class but if you were presistent enough you caught some keepers. 15 keeper tog were put on ice, most were quality fish in the 17-19 inch range as well as an equal number of nice sized ling. I caught my abbreviated NJ limit of 4 keeper tog out of the 15 blackfish I hooked. There was one other limit besides mine.

Boat Name: Dautless
Date Fished: 1-3-04
Location: East of BA buoy
Fishing Method: Jigging
Specie: Atlantic Mackerel
Size: 12-18"
Bait or Lure: teasers (red,yellow,green)
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Took the Dautless out with my two sons after hearing the reports (here and Ristori)about the macks at the BA. First time mack fishing for both teenagers. The boat was loaded with anglers and Capt.Willie Egeter did a fantastic job of keeping us on the schools, which were constantly moving. He was very fair about switching sides (port/starboard) alternating with each new drift. Everyone on board caught a "cooler" full of macks, with a few herring mixed in. Dogfish were sometimes on the bottom, causing the Capt. to move on to a new spot. Started with 10 oz. of lead in a.m., then down to 5 oz. in afternoon, By the way he stayed out another hour even tho everybody loaded up w/macks. I was told by a friend who fishes the Dautless regularly that the Capt. is a gem...he sure is very courteous and patient not to mention helpful. The mates were also the best .....If I'm not fishing on my 23 foot Robalo (1981) this year (the Sonny II) I can be found on the Dautless. Happy New Year to All our fellow N/net fishing friends. Tight Lines BD
