FISHING REPORTS FOR JANUARY 2003

NAUTICALNET MARINE CHARTERS

Angler Name : Tuna Joe
E-Mail :
Boat Name: Norma-K
Date Fished: Sat. - 1/25/03
Location: Point Pleasant
Fishing Method: Anchored
Specie: Ling (AKA Red Hake)
Size: 1 to 3 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Clam & Bergall's
Water Depth: Approx. 120 ft.
Water Temp.: ?
Information : Overall, I had a good day fishing for Ling. I had high-hook on the boat. (Maybe because I tied my own rigs), but I had no pool contender. The pool winner had about a 4lb. Cod. There were people that did not catch a fish. We all know how that goes. Hardly any wind, sea's were about 2', if that. 6 to 8oz. sinkers held bottom fine in about 120 feet of water. Lost my share of rigs on & around the wrecks. The best bait you can use for Ling right now is Bergall's. So save your Bergall's if you catch any. Fillet them & cut them into strips just as you would squid. They stay on the hook for quite a while! For anyone fishing tomorrow on the Norma-K, try to get a spot mid-ship & on the sunnyside of the boat. Good Luck Loose lips & tight buns!!!

Tunacious Sportfishing

Angler Name : Nigel Fairbank
E-Mail : nfairbank@aol.com
Boat Name: Jamaica II
Date Fished: 1/15/2003
Location: East of the Mudhole
Fishing Method: Anchored
Specie: Cod
Size: 0
Bait or Lure: Clam
Water Depth: 150 - 200
Water Temp.: 42
Information : Left the dock at 05:00 and steamed NE for 3 hours. Anchored up next to a wreck that the mate said was the Alex Christian. The water depth was about 150 and it felt like a sand bottom. Saw a buoy about a mile east of the anchoring point. I believe it was the HA buoy. The captain was trying to find Cod. Apart from a number of bergalls, there was not any edible life caught. Moved further west, anchored along side another wreck. I caught 1 small ling. Some guys were actually on the wreck and they caught a few ling and conger eels (not pout). One guy had a conger about 4.5 feet long that weighed about 30lbs. Moved closer inshore and anchored in the mudhole. Again nothing. All in all only about 25 ling caught all day. The biggest of which was about 2lbs and won the pool. In reading other reports I read that the Captain Al also went cod fishing but did not catch anything. I think that it is best to focus on the ling and forget that all elusive cod. Good luck... Nigel........So Many Fish, So Little Time ><))))*>

Angler Name : jack glassen
E-Mail : happyjax710@yahoo.com
Boat Name: jamaica ii
Date Fished: jan 11th 2003
Location: about 10 miles offshore of the atlantic highlands
Fishing Method: bottom fishing
Specie: Ling (AKA Red Hake)
Size: mixed
Bait or Lure: clams
Water Depth: 70 to 110 ft
Water Temp.: 44
Information : well my good buddy frank and i made our first wreck trip of the season aboard joe bogans jamaicaii.the weather elements were against us though and we should have just stayed home.cabin fever overcame us though and off we went.the wind was howling out of the west and it was frigid.we didn't head off to the mudhole wrecks due to the wind so capt eric stayed within 10 miles of the beach all day hitting wrecks and rough spots in about 100 feet of water.there was life on all the spots but they weren't biting hot and heavy and only had a slow pick on mixed size ling and blackfish.a lone striper was also caught.the mates were great as usual and the captain did great job putting us over the spots, wasn't his fault the fish had lock jawwill be back again in feb to try again

Angler Name : Mark Bennett
E-Mail : mbennett@ameritechgrapgics
Boat Name: Norma K III
Date Fished: 1/11/03
Location: just N of Man. inlet
Fishing Method: bottom
Specie: Blackfish
Size: mostly shorts
Bait or Lure: crabs
Water Depth: 80-100
Water Temp.: n/a
Information : needed a fishing fix, so I headed south and went out on the Norma K III. Left the inlet and it was flat as glass. Wind kicked up a little but really wasn't that bad for a mid January. Fishing was a little slow with mostly shorts being boated. There were some keepers for the guys who worked for them but don't think anyone got their limit. Pool winner was probably only about 6-7 lbs. Capt. moved around a few times looking for fish, and the mates did an excellent job. I would definately recommend this boat if your looking to get out. Dress warm and tight lines...
