Boat Name: Skipper
Date Fished: 1/28/02
Location: 15 miles NE of Manasqan Inlet
Fishing Method: Bottom
Specie: Tautog
Size: 0
Bait or Lure: Green Crab
Water Depth: 100
Water Temp.:
Information : A day like this in January is a gift not to be taken for granted.
However the Blackfish and Ling were not cooperating. The Captain spent a lot of time
in unproductive spots. Great weather, calm seas and the companionship of pals Blind
Rob, Joe and Nick (alias Abbott and Costello), made for a glorious day on the water,
just what the doctor ordered to hold the winter doldrums at bay.

Boat Name: Lady Godiver
Date Fished: 1/26
Location: Off Sandy Hook
Fishing Method: Spearfish
Specie: Blackfish
Size: up to 9lbs
Bait or Lure:
Water Depth: 80ft
Water Temp.: 47
Information : I thought I would give it a try with all the good reports and mild
weather. I jumped in on a small wreck in 80 ft of water and found lots of Blackfish
and several ling. While I took two Blackfish home there were many others up to the
10lb range as well as a large amount of smaller b Tog and Ling. I did not notice any
Sea Bass or other species. As I was leaving a party boat went on the spot. There
seem to be Tog on all the wrecks I visit and lots of them, so why are we being told
there are less then there have been? If you see someone taking fish for the live
market TURN THEM IN. I stopped by Point Plesant on the way home and I talked to
several guy who got checked when they got off the boat. They told me some Asian guys
got fined and had way over thier limit. They also mentioned that some guy had the
mates clean their fish on the way in and got in trouble for that also. Be careful
check the regs!

Fishing Method: Bottem
Specie: Blackfish
Size: Keeper
Bait or Lure: clam

several attemps to improve our position. We did manage to put together a small catch
of Black fish and Ling.

Angler Name : John Krempasky
E-Mail : johnk@dmv.com
Date:1/23/02
Specie: Tautog
Information : It's great to release female tog (particularly in the Spring) but
interestingly tog actually grow VERY fast when young (reaching 10 inches in only
three years) and they are fertile and spawning at that size. They only slow down
growing AFTER three years. And the oldest, largest tog females (16 years and older)
are actually LESS productive in terms of eggs than younger females. So you aren't
necessarily being a hero releasing an old, large female; you would be taking more
future eggs out of circulation keeping a smaller one.

Specie: Tautog
Information : I would just like to put my opinion in on the blackfish conservation
issue. After reader various reports on nauticalnet I have noticed that alot of you
are now realeasing big blackfish. This is some of the best news i have read in a
long time. It is good to let this big females go because it takes blackfish around
forty years to grow to that size and on top of this blackfish are not fully mature
and cannot reproduce until late in life. Because of this blackfish stocks are very
fragile and take tens of years to replenish. On the issue that was bought up in toms
river recently i feel that the data is correct abd have noticed after years of
fishing for blackfish up and down the coast less are caught each year. Personally, i
have not kept a blackfish in a very long time and I respect those who make the
decision to let the females go even thought they dont have too!

Boat Name: Mad Gaffer
Date Fished: January 20
Location: 17 Fathoms
Fishing Method: Bottom Fishing
Specie: Tautog
Size: Up to 12 Pounds
Bait or Lure: Green Crabs
Water Depth: 100 to 120
Water Temp.: mid-40's
Information : Went out with Captain Ray Burke and some of his regular "sharpies". I
am pretty new to deep water blackfishing and everyone was quite helpful. Although
Captain Burke claims that it was slower than it has been, a total of approx. 35
keepers were caught. The sharpies threw back several Blackfish over 10 pounds.
If you are looking to catch some real fish at a very affordable price, than this boat
is definately worth checking out.

Boat Name: Dauntless
Date Fished: January 20. 2002
Location: 16 miles North of Point Pleasant
Fishing Method: bait & jigging
Specie: Ling (AKA Red Hake)
Size: 1 & 1/2 lbs and under
Bait or Lure: tubes and bottom rigs
Water Depth: 120'
Water Temp.:
Information : I brushed 6" of snow off the truck at 4am, briefly questioned my
sanity, then headed for Point Pleasant. Fortunately there were 15 other people who
wanted mackerel, and the Dauntless fired up her engines. The weather was cold, but
sunny and the seas were pretty calm. I sat out at the stern on the way out, watching
the sea gulls ride the air currents behind the boat. 16 miles later, I was into
constant mackerel. As soon as my rig hit the bottom I could feel the macs attack.
They were assorted sizes. I had about 3/4 of my cooler full, when we moved to a
wreck for bottom fishing. I caught Ling, cunners and spiny dogfish. Twice I even
had "double headers" of dogfish. Through the tip of a friend, I switched from clams
to fresh mackerel, and then I caught mostly Ling. Some HUGE tog and a striper were
also landed by others on the boat. I watched sharks and birds try to get angler's
fish, and the diving birds were spectacular. The crowd was friendly, the mate was
there when you needed him, and the Captain, Bill Egerter III, went all out for 16
people. Many times During the day, I felt thankful that I made the decision to go,
despite family and friends saying I was crazy to go, due to the weather and road
conditions. I went home with a smile and 108 fish; (79 macs, 10 herring, 15 ling, and
4 cunners). I also took home some aching arms and great memories.

Boat Name: Striper
Date Fished: 1/15/2002
Location: Toms River
Information : I went to the Blackfish Management meeting in Toms River last night and
we need to cut back 65% as per our goverment. They said we still have low stocks
based on their surveys, etc. No one there beleived that this information was correct
and most everyone stated that. We may have one more year of the same regulations but
them they say we will have to cut back even more. Our feeling was at least we will
have one more year and by then they may get better info and realize the stocks are
coming back and we will not need the cuts. Everyone aggreed that their data is
flawed. They also mentioned that there are only 58 commerical pot licenses in effect
and they only take about 50,000 lbs of fish while the recreational catch is well over
1,000,000 lbs. of fish. Everyone there was also upset about the taking of small live
Blackfish for they Asian Resturant trade. I don't think this will stop untill there
is some real enforcement.

Boat Name: Patriot
Date Fished: 1/15/02
Location: Off Manasquan Inlet
Fishing Method: Trolling shad rigs and casting to birds
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: Up to 38 inches
Bait or Lure: Shad rigs & Bombers
Water Depth: 60'
Water Temp.: 44 - 45
Information : It was such a nice day we decided to go see if the Stripers were still
in town....they are. Limited out in an hour with a fast and furious bite on chartruse
shad rigs right out of Squan Inlet. Nice fish for the most part - slots and keepers.
Pretty good day all in all. After limiting out towing shad rigs we casted into the
birds and caught and released more than 30 fish using Bombers. The fish caught on the
Bombers were smaller than what the shad rigs caught. It was non-stop action under the
birds. The fish are still out there....and were very hungry. When the tide went slack
the bite died to nothing as usual. Since we were limited out, we headed for the barn
and beers, burgers and fish stories at Franke's Bar in Pt Pleasant Beach. A good day
and warm outside too. Is it another El Nino' year? I believe so....

Location: Inshore wrecks
Fishing Method: Bottom
Specie: Tautog
Size: 4-7lbs
Bait or Lure: green crabs & clams
Water Depth: 65ft.
Water Temp.: ?
Information : It was an excellent day as Captain Jim put us on some southern inshore
wrecks. We were the only boat out there and everyone in our party limited on large
blackfish(many 6-7lbs.)and we released many fish as well. A few ling were also
caught. Changing winds made anchoring tough, but this captain was able to quickly
make adjustments to keep us in the steady action of fish all day. We all went home
with piles of meat!!

Date Fished: 01-05 & 06-02
Location: Ocean
Fishing Method: Chunking
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 20 - 36 inch
Bait or Lure: Surf Clam Bellys
Water Depth: 30 feet
Water Temp.: low 40s
Information : My friend Mike and i have been doing fantastic with the chunking method
using surf clam bellys for bait and chunks.
On 12-30-01 we had over fifteen stripers behind North Wildwood in Grassy Sound with
the largest weighing in at 26 pounds. We anchored on a sod bank with a deep drop off
and began chunking with the clam bellys. We had fish around the boat in less than a
half hour and we kept them there with s slow feed of the bellys. we have been doing
this since the middle of November when the wind kept us and my twenty foot center
console from heading to the rips. We never imagined that we could have this much
action with big fish this late in the back bays.
Back bay waters shut down for stripers on December 31 so on 01-05-02 we decided to
test the chunks outside. On Saturday we ran out of the Cape May inlet and moved
about a mile off the Wildwood Crest beach. We anchored and began chunking. Forty
five minutes later we were both hooked up and within an hour had hooked twenty four
stripers of various size. On 01-06-02 we again headed out but made a right turn and
moved just outside the yellow can markers off the Coast Guard Base. The water was a
little deeper and it took about an hour but just like the day before we were in with
a lot of fish. the bellys make a lot of juice when you throw them in and the scent
just seems to draw the stripers in like a magnate.
We have been using size 9/0 bait hooks that seem to cut down on the deep hooked
fish. We gave the circle hook an honest shot but far to many stripers were hooked deep.
One note of worry that has us concerned is that the stripers we were catching in the
back bay were loaded with baby flounder and some small tog. I understand that baby
flounder spend the first year of their life in the protected back bays and don't
begin to migrate until their second year. on 32 inch striper we cleaned on 12-22-01
had fifty three baby flounder in it stomach. when we cut it open it looked like a
bag of wet potatoe chips had been dumped on the dock.
All the fish we cleaned from the back bays had some flounder in them but this one
fish was loaded.
We have tried chunking with the clam bellys in Delaware Bay at the 60 foot slough and
scored incredible numbers which we have on video. we tried middle shoal in the rips
by anchoring above the rip and feeding the bellys and our baits into the rip. we had
our six keepers in less than an hour.
My brother asked me when was I going to take the boat out of the water. I told him
February 29.

Date Fished: 1/02/02
Location: Allantic City/Egg Harbor
Fishing Method: Jigging
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 21 to 37 inches
Bait or Lure: Diamond Jig/ Crippled Herring
Water Depth: 40-55 ft.
Water Temp.: 41
Information : We went out about 9'oclock looking for some birds and some marks on the
finder outside of Atlantic City. Nothing happened so we went south toward Egg
Harbor. Trolled around there but nothing happened. Started heading back north and
we received a call from a boat that had birds all over the place. Skot back down
south, a little passed Egg Harbor. We ended getting our limit in a matter of
minutes, and had a good old time catching and releasing 30 to 40 nice strippers.
Best fishing day of my life yet!!!
