Boat Name: 125 Jamaica
Date Fished: 12/28
Location: Baltimore Canyon
Fishing Method: chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 30-70lbs
Bait or Lure: butterfish
Water Depth: deep
Water Temp.: 59
Information : Took another anglers advise (don't be a pus) and booked an offshore trip to the canyons on the big Jamaica. The boat sold out for a toal of 33 fares. We left the dock at 8PM Monday and were greeted by 10 foot seas for our 6 hour ride. The size of this boat-125 ft.-made the trip tolerable until we stopped and bobbed to set the anchors at 2:30. At that point quite a few people started the chum slick. Anyway there was a slow pick of longfin and yellow fin from about 5-10AM. Don't even think about chunking without at least a 6 ft. flourocarbon leader. Mono leaders got about 1/5 the pickups. I had 1 hit and landed a 30lb yft at 7AM. That was it for me. We picked up at 12:30 for the ride back. At that point the seas had deminished to 2-3 ft. Total take for the boat: 24 fish plus one short swordfish released. The captain and mates are pros and did a good job. I beleive they are sailing on the 2nd and 9th.

Angler Name : Tom "BraggingSize" Rabi
E-Mail : rabooo@monmouth.com
Boat Name: Gambler Head Boat
Date Fished: 12-19-99
Location: Manasquan Inlet South
Fishing Method: Jigging
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: Keepers
Bait or Lure: Laaaaaarge Krocks
Water Depth: 35-50
Water Temp.:
Information : Drydocked the BraggnSize for the year, sic..sic...and Buddy Ron with his Laurie-Jean was unavailable so rather than miss a day of Bassin I climbed aboard the Gambler, headboat out of Point Pleasant. Since we had been trolling all season I was not adverse to a day of jigging. Wind was from the N-NE with a slight chop but water was CLOUDY to say the least. I was amazed that in the thick of the season and on a Saturday that there was only 22 anglers on this boat. Made it quite comfy to drift jigging large krockidiles with a minimum of tangles with other anglers. Although I have never fished this boat before I was impressed at the effort Capt. Bob Bogan displayed in locating pods of Bass. Witnessing the lack of action the trollers around us were having it appeared it might be a slow day. Not So. Following the advice of his Mates I purchased a LARGE Krock and proceeded to Jig My arm off. A little different than trolling but in my opinion more fun after the hookup. All in All a great day. Met new friends, Mark Caruso and Mike Owens, found that there DOES exist a headboat with a competent and caring Captain and Crew and best of..... caught two (2) KEEPER Bass with the 36" taking the pool. Still looking for that 40 lber. Fish while you can and Happy Holidays to All. Fish "em Up !!! Tom "BraggNsize" Rabi

Water Temp.: N/A
Information : What an AWLFUL day!!! I've been head boat fishing for 20 years and this was the worst. I don't know where Tom "Bragging Size" Rabi was, but it wasn't on the Gambler on 12/19/99. Anyone that actually spent the day in the mall with millions of shoppers was better off!! The winds were about 25 mph out of the N to NE. The temps were in the upper 30's and the sea was very rough at about 6 to 8 feet. I counted about 10 sick fisherman on the boat. As a matter of fact, I only saw 4 other boats out all day. With those conditions biting fish would have made the day bearable...not so. There were 2 fish boated all day. They were about 18" and 27+" and that was it. I know that is fishing, but what a wasted day. Believe me, it made the trip back to Baltimore very long. That's it for my striper season. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!

Location: Delaware River near Salem
Fishing Method: Plugs
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 29 to 31"
Bait or Lure: gotcha
Water Depth: 10
Water Temp.: ?
Information : Still plenty of action in the Delaware. We caught several shorts and 2 keepers. These fish must be thick in there because we keep foul hooking them. Even a 25" striper with a hook in his belly is quite a battle. This Delaware river action should last for several more weeks. Of course after 12/31/99 we can't keep them.

Angler Name : Jim Woods

Date Fished: 12/18/99
Location: 20-25 Mile Wrecks
Fishing Method: Bottom fishing
Specie: Tautog
Size: up to 10 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Clams & Green Crabs
Water Depth: 100 ft.
Water Temp.: 49 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula had the Bounty Hunter from Pt. Pleasant out with the Jim Woods charter. Running to the 25 mile wrecks east of Manasquan Inlet and stopping in 100 ft. of 49 degree water the Blackfish cooperated with steady action. We caught well on Clam baits as well as Green Crabs. After fishing 3 wrecks we had 40 plus keeper Blackfish in our fish box, with the largest weighing 10 lbs. It appears the last of the Seabass have moved off to deeper water and the Blackfish have now taken over the wrecks. The ratio of 1 keeper to 4 or 5 short fish held true on all 3 stops.

Location: Mantoloking
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: up to 33"
Bait or Lure: Umbrella Rigs
Water Depth: 50-60 ft.
Water Temp.: 49 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula ran the Bounty Hunter south of Manasquan Inlet with the Paul Reyburn charter. After yesterdays horrible fishing conditions we found the water clarity had improved considerably. We read occasional schools of bait with an occasional Striper. We picked 3 keeper Bass at Mantoloking. We then worked our way south where we boated another 3 Bass off the Seaside Pier in 60 ft. of water. Returning to Mantoloking we picked away and landed another 4 keeper Bass up to 33". Total for the day 10 keeper Bass and oddly, not a single short Bass. We went 10 for 10 which doesn't happen to often. Blue and white Sassy Shads along with solid white Shads mixed on a 4 arm Umbrella Rig did the trick.

Specie: Striped Bass
Size:
Bait or Lure: Umbrella Rigs
Water Depth: 40-60 ft.
Water Temp.: 49 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula had his Bounty Hunter out with the Tom Headley charter. It was obvious from the start that the previous 2 days of 30 knot Northeast winds had taken its toll on the Striped Bass fishery. Starting off at Bay Head we saw no signs of bait or fish. As we worked our way South thru the dark brown water, there were no birds or signs of bait. After 3 hours of trolling the traditional hot spots, we gave up at Island Beach without seeing a Bass. We then proceeded 17 miles off the beach and tried wreckfishing to save the day. A couple of keeper Blackfish along with a handfull of Seabass was all we managed, as the 25 knot S.W. wind made conditions uncomfortable. We called it a day at Noon. This was a day to forget. Hope it gets better tomorrow!

Information : I wish to inform all the fishermen and boaters in the Jersey area of the following. The Army Corps of Engineering has granted a permit to the Port Authority of New York allowing them to dump 250,000 cubic yards of highly contaminated silt in the waters 6 miles off Sandy Hook. This is a double cross and a slap in the face to all the people who worked so hard to clean the ocean and did so much to bring back the endangered Strippers and Weakfish. Al Gore himself assured the people of this State that there would be no more dumping off New Jersey. The Permit is good for 3 years and does not limit the type or amount of material that can be dumped. The dunp site is at the source of the Hudson Canyon. This silt will contaminate the Stripped Bass ,Fluke, and other species that can be found in that area. Tomorrow morning there will be a 5 hour program at Kens Landing sponcered by WOBM Radio where we can sign a protest against this act. All the politians contacted by the radio station would not comment on this. The Rats only come around for your money and votes. What ever happened to the Government of the People and For the People? If you want to fish in healthy water please show up or sign the protest.Thank-you

Information : Left inlet with only 5 fisherman aboard and went south following birds. Everyone hooked up with shorts. We then got into a good drift off of Seaside. Mate Billie "expertly" fought and landed the biggest squid I have ever seen, about 30". With only 5 fisherman aboard we caught 5 "keepers." I was lucky, I got 3 of them (bonus tag used) and won the pool. It's about time with all the shorts I have thrown back this year. Water Depth: 45-75 ft
Water Temp.: 47.5
Information : Seeing what wind we had on Friday nite and all day Saturday, I was quite suprised when the Laurie-Jean Owner Ron Potts and I took a peek at the ocean at first light.FLAT inshore and birds EVERYWHERE !!!!! We hurried and got the boat only to be slowed down by the shallowness of the bay. The lowest I have ever seen. After finally breaking the Inlet, we ran south to Lavalette and began trolling 250ft of wire with 10 oz of drails. Although we marked and marked we only had 4 knockdowns which resulted in 8 Bass total, 4 keepers and wow, 1 triple. The KEEPERS were loaded with peanut bunkers. Less fish but better ratio. Chatter on the radio had Fish and Game at the Inlet boarding boats, checking for shorts. Although, I did not witness this action, and being in Law Enforcement myself, I totally support this, but do sometimes wonder if they ever stop and/or board the commercials to enforce the regs. Just wondering..... Fish "EM UP !!! Tom "BraggnSize" Rabi

Location: Mantoloking
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: up to 33"
Bait or Lure: Umbrella Rigs
Water Depth: 60 ft.
Water Temp.: 52 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula had his Bounty Hunter out with the John Dubrowsky charter. Starting the day trolling in 60 ft. of water off Seaside Park we put 6 Striped Bass up to 32" in the fish box over the first 2 hours of trolling. As the oncoming front began to move in conditions began to deteriorate quickly. A 20 knot S.W. wind along with a 4 ft. sea made the decision to run back North to Mantoloking an easy one, also, a wise one. The fish were stacked up on bottom structure and we quickly put another 8 fish up to 33" in the fish box. Tally for the day 14 Striped Bass including 2 trophy fish along with another 20+ shorts released. Blue and white Shads on Umbrella Rigs was the way to go.

Water Depth: 50-60

Information : Hearing I missed 2 great days of Bass fishing myself, Big Rich and Jimbo sailed on the "Big Rich" a nice 27 foot SportCraft breaking the Inlet at 9:30 am to seas building from a pretty stiff south wind. Began to troll 2 wireline outfits in 60 feet with the "old reliable" white and white/black shad bodied unbrella rigs at the "loking" Tower. Marking only sporadically we trolled for nearly a hour before our first knowndown. With Rich on the rod, a 29 3/4" keeper was boated. Granted, not the "BraggnSize" cow we're seeking, but nonetheless, tablefare. It was aleast an another hour before our next and final knockdown of the day, with the Bass Newbie Jimbo, losing the fish on the way to the boat. Oh well!!Anyway, I hope to see other reports for today indicating I may have made a error in picking the way South. Otherwise, could it be that we have already enjoyed the best it's going to get this year??? Hey, I'm not complaining. It was a great couple of months. Note: This weekend may be a washout, but we'll continue to fish as long as possible. I do appreciate ALL those who have posted reports in the past and do sincerely hope those of us who continue to fish will take the time and effort to KEEP POSTING. Fish "Em Up!!! Fishing Method: BOTTOM FOR SEABASS
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: 10-14
Bait or Lure: CLAM
Water Depth: 110'
Water Temp.: 49
Information : On a scale or l to 10, we had a "4" day. Boat was at least 1/2 full so we went way out, about 7 miles. Lots of small bass and bergalls along with a few keeper bass and ling. The pool winning sea bass was just ok, not a real pool winning fish, but it was on a bad day. Capt tried to make it a better day by extending our trip by an hour and stopping on the way in for two drops for blackfish. The crabs were cut and we tried in vain to turn the day around with a few good size blackfish for the cooler. It just did not happen, I saw one blackfish come over the rail on ny side of the boat, that may have been it. The day was saved somewhat by the nice weather and the conversations with others while waiting for the "big" one to hit. One thing is for sure, we will never quit trying.....

Fish stayed about 1/4 to 1/2 mile off the beach for the most part but every once in a while would give us a shot at them. Did not see any keepers at all. Boats had plenty of action all day. Location: Seaside
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 18-32"
Bait or Lure: Umbrellas
Water Depth: 55
Water Temp.: 49
Information : Trolled in 55' of water off the ferris wheel in Seaside Wed, first hit at 10AM was a 28" keeper, got another 28" fish on a parachute rig as I was bringing it up 30 minutes later. Picked up about 4 shorts with plugs when the birds were feeding off of IBSP in 30' of water 3 miles north of the inlet. Very calm day, around 50 degrees. Thursday was even warmer (T-shirt at noon), and ocean was flat as a lake all day. Picked up a 29" striper about a mile south of the ferris wheel at Seaside, 10AM, in 60' of water, green tubes on an umbrella. 20 minutes later picked up a double hit on a shad umbrella - 30 and 32". That made the limit for the day (NJ bonus card). Ended up catching 10 stripers, 5 over 28", and one very FAT 32" bluefish. Not many days that you get a sunburn in Dec.

Size: up to 3 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 90 ft.
Water Temp.: 52 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula had the Bounty Hunter out to the 20 mile wrecks with the Frank Lukenda charter. Fishing 2 wrecks in 90 ft. of water produced a cooler full of Seabass up to 3 lbs., however the action and size of the fish was no where near that of a week ago. I guess the best of the Seabass fishing is behind us as we saw more undersize Blackfish on this trip. 2 and 3 lb. Bluefish are still on the wrecks and Bluefin Tuna in the 25 to 40 lb. class were constantly moving thru the area. A brief stop to troll Striped Bass in 60 ft. of water at Seaside Park only netted us 7 short Bass.

Water Depth: 50-70 ft.

Information : Capt. Paul Regula ran his Bounty Hunter several miles south of Manasquan Inlet with the Peter and Steve VanDuyne charter. This day was by far the best Striper trolling day of the year as a body of fish stretching from Mantoloking to the Seaside Pier supplied non stop action. Trolling Umbrella Rigs with blue and white Shads we had a limit catch of 14 Striped Bass up to 34" in the boat within 2 hours of trolling. We were the only boat out to enjoy this great day of fishing. Obviously the 3 to 5 ft. Southwest heave along with a steady rain kept the other boats tied to the dock. We caught all the fish in 50 to 70 ft. of 50 degree water. Besides the 14 Bass in the box several other large fish were released along with 10+ shorts.

Information : Went to the spot of Mantoloking. Several of my buddies were already there. We all caught fish for several hours. I got tired of cranking in fish so I headed south towards Lavallette. Off the "orange fence" birds were working baits on the beach. My fishfinder lit up with bass on the bottom in 40' of water. I pulled the engines out of gear and let the shads settle. I put her back in gear and hook up. I did this until my arms were tired. Headed home with them still biting. I saw several boats running at high speed to get into the middle of the birds. I thought all the "bennies" had gone home. If those butheads would slow down and look at their fishfinders they would see the bass were everywhere.

Everyone was trolling, no one was catching. Baitfish marked on the bottom, but no schools of fish. Tried around the lump, then worked up to Barnegat Inlet, looking for any marks or birds working - nothing at all. Radio talk sounded equally grim north of the inlet. Date Fished: 12-4-99
Location: Manasquan Inlet
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 34"
Bait or Lure: White/white-black shads/bunker spoon
Water Depth: 45-65'
Water Temp.: 47
Information : Broke the Inlet about 8am to wind and rain. Trolled North to Sea Girt,WITHOUT marking a fish or bait to the tune of 2 hours. Heard fish being taken at the Rocks but was weighing the somewhat dismal weather, decided to head south. Began trolling Bayhead and immediately had 2 knockdowns. Boated and released the first 2 of 11 short Bass. The rain stopped and the sky cleared as we continued to troll and catch Bass. Exchanged fishing info with Charlie of "The Road" and continued to troll South to Ortley taking 4 Keeper Bass (to 34") on the way. Of the 6 Keepers boated 4 were retained for the ride home to be served to awaiting company. Note , not all fished were marked on the recorder but most were taken on white/white and black shad rigs although a few were caught on a large silver bunker spoon. Cleaning the "fat" 34" revealed a whole 8" bunker in it's belly. Another reveal a couple of large eels. Hearing of other fisherman catching 36"er's and a 42"er has made me decide to do it all again tomorrow in hopes of 1 Keeper "cow" for this season. Fish 'Em Up !!! Tom"BraggnSize"Rabi

Water Depth: 90-110 ft.

Information : Capt. Paul Regula had the Bounty Hunter from Clarks Landing Marina out to the 20 to 30 mile wrecks Southeast of Manasquan Inlet with the Werner Sprie charter. Stopping on the first wreck in 90 ft. of water, the Seabass bite was non-stop with over 100 Seabass up to 4 lbs. going in to the fish box. The second wreck in 110 ft. produced another 40+ large Seabass, but the bonus came when we switched over to Green Crabs for bait. Mixed in with the large Seabass we started to catch jumbo Blackfish, putting 8 in the fish box. The smallest a 5 pounder and the largest weighing just over 12 lbs.

Date Fished: 12/3/99
Location: Shrewsbury Rocks
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: up to 47 3/4 inches
Bait or Lure: Umbrella Rigs
Water Depth: 30-45 ft.
Water Temp.: 49 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula had his Bounty Hunter out for a day of Striped Bass trolling with Karl Dickel and Larry Rosen. Running up to the Shrewsbury Rocks we had our first Bass in the box within an hour. The trolling continued to improve over the next 4 hours as Bass in the 29" to 32" size continued to fill our fish box. At noon one of the rods rigged with a small Umbrella Rig with blue and white Shads took a good hit. As we struggled to get the pole out of the rod holder the huge fish continued to peel line off the reel. Getting the rod into Karl Dickel's belt, we settled down the fish and within 5 minutes of constant pulling and taking line we netted a beauty, 47 3/4" long with a 26" girth. The fish tipped the scale at 40 lbs. A personal best for Karl and for the Bounty Hunter. The big fish dwarfed the other 11 keeper Bass in the box. The Reel Seat in Brielle will have the fish mounted for the charter.

Information : Steve Fritz and Fred Hofmann joined me for a day of Stiper fishing at the Shrewsbury Rocks. It was cold when we arived there and we were the only boat trolling for bass. It didn't take long to put the first keeper in the box. We had a steady pick of shorts and an occasional keeper until 11:00 when it broke wide open. We boated 5 more keepers in 1 1/2 hours with lots of 27" throwbacks. This was my last trip for the season and it was a fitting end to a good season. Enjoy your holidays and I'll be in touch next year.

Boat Name: Bounty Hunter
Date Fished: 12-2-99
Location: Highlands Bridge Area
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: up to 31 inches
Bait or Lure: Umbrella Rigs
Water Depth: 30-40 ft.
Water Temp.: 49 degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula had his Bounty Hunter out of Clarks Landing Marina out with the Mark Lukenda charter. After not sailing for 3 days because of strong winds finding the fish was a toss-up. With water temps dropping 5 degrees (49 degrees) since Sunday we started at Mantoloking where we had plenty of bird life but could only troll 3 short Bass. Moving up to the Shrewsbury Rocks it was the same story no birds and only a few short Bass. Just when it appeared that the day was going to be a big bust, we received a call from Capt. Pete Wagner (Hyper Striper) that the bird play was active off the Highlands Bridge. Pete was correct as usual and we got into some great fishing. Trolling Umbrella Rigs and working surface Poppers we landed over 40 Bass with 7 keepers up to 31" going into the fish box. Blue and white Shads along with yellow and red tubes did the trick today.

Location: Cape May
Fishing Method: Jigging
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: Up to 32"
Bait or Lure: Hopkins
Water Depth: 50'-60'
Water Temp.: 48
Information : I jigged striped bass up to 32" six miles south of cape May inlet. The fish were schooled up and hit just about anything you sent down to them. The heavier jigs worked the best, they got down to where the fish were feeding without letting out alot of line. As the water temp continues to drop the bass should remain schooled up so go get em when ya can.

Fishing Method:
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 22 in.
Bait or Lure: 1/4 oz jig with plastic grub
Water Depth: ?
Water Temp.: ?
Information : Checked the beaches from Sea Bright to Pt. Pleasant. Cold, heavy swell, strong wind parallel to the beach, one fisherman in the whole stretch (of the spots I checked.) Tried the inlet at Pt. Pleasant bulkhead thinking there might still be some hickory shad. Instead a 22 in. fat Striper hit the lure intended for shad. Changed to a small sassy shad on the same rig. Had one fish on, smaller than the first, but lost it before It came within sight. Only fished for a short time in the P.M. Wind too cold, hands froze. At the bulkhead, there was one other fisherman when I arrived, none when I left.
