Boat Name: Mad Gaffer
Date Fished: 12/30/03
Location: Inshore Rocks, Sm Wrecks
Fishing Method: Bait on Bottom
Specie: Tautog
Size: Up to 4 lbs
Bait or Lure: Greenies
Water Depth: about 60 feet
Water Temp.:
Information : As it will be in the fishing game, we were humbled by the tog as well as the weather. In an extraordinary effort.Capt. Ray and the mate, Capt. Jeff gave us their all to get us into a few fish. Attempting to fish the inshore tog grounds in wind and waves, Capt. Jeff got a tremendous work-out re-adjusting the anchor many times to satisfy the Mad Gaffers commitment to get us over "the spot". Well if they ain't chewing, they ain't chewing. I boated maybe 10 fish, 2 of which were keepers up to 4 lbs. Some very small nuggets were caught since the larger fish weren’t to be bothered. A great effort was made and it was a demonstration of fortitude and effort. It was another memorable tog adventure aboard the Mad Gaffer. Happy New Year to all and may 04' bring you fishes galore! Peace-Out!

Boat Name: 18ft. Hydra Sports
Date Fished: 12/29/03
Location: Inshore Shrewsbury Rocks
Fishing Method: bottom rigs
Specie: Tautog
Size: up to 8 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Green Crabs
Water Depth: 50 feet
Water Temp.: 43 degrees
Information : This trip was a late season Christmas present. Bill Rhee(back from Hawaii for the holidays), his uncle Ed Gallo from New York, and Mike Mazzacco of Red Bank, were able to overcome a broken trailer hitch, the need to drag the boat to a local gas station tank up, and a drive to Brielle to find green crabs, before being able to take advantage of the unusually mild winter weather. We put our 18 foot boat on the same piece of rock that I had beeen catching fish over a month earlier. Got there at the top of the tide, and within 15 minutes, Bill smacks an 8 Lb. tog. We went on to catch a number of very decent fish in the 5-6 Lb. range. We only kept 10-12 fish, but we were pleased.. and threw back an equal number of shorts. Good thing too! The conservation officer was at the launch ramp when we returned... late that afternoon.
This trip was a truly uexpected Christmas present from above.

Boat Name: Night Hawk
Date Fished: 12/29/03
Location: Approx 7 to 10 mi off Asbury Park
Fishing Method: Jigging
Specie: Atlantic Mackerel
Size: From 10 to 20 inches
Bait or Lure: Those amazing colored plastic tubes
Water Depth: 70 to 90 ft
Water Temp.: approx 45f
Information : What a day! 50+ degrees, sw wind at 8mph 2 to 3 ft ocean. Fishing began at 8:30am and was virtually non stop. First time mackerel fishing for my two boys ages 10 and 13. They absolutely loved it! My little guy even said it was better than his Game Boy! Holy Mackerel!! And my dad loved watching me take care of making sure my kids would keep there lines in the water! Now I know why I always outfished him when I was a kid! Every fisherman using 3 hooks or more each had a minimum of 100 fish. With the exception of me of course. I did get to fish a little bit though!
The captain was great, kept us on fish all the time!
The mates were great, were there for us whenever we called! (for me that was alot)Boat arrived back at the dock at 2pm. We could have come in a little earlier as all of our coolers were filled to the top! Including 1 striper! Caught by my 10 year old! 15 lbs, 33 inches!
That was one of 2 caught on the day. So a big THANKS to the captain and crew of the Night Hawk for making a great day "Spectacular"
Oh, and if your thinking about going Mackerel fishing,
GO NOW!!! Enjoy

Boat Name: Mad Gaffer
Date Fished: 12/27
Location: 17 Fathoms
Fishing Method: Bait on Bottom
Specie: Tautog
Size: up to 5.5 lbs
Bait or Lure: Greenies
Water Depth: 90 Ft.
Water Temp.:
Information : Well another Tog first for this Tog'en neophyte. High hook and only limit of the day. That is progress! What turned out to be a tough day and a slow (but some-what steady) pick aboard the Mad Gaffer with 7 other Tog enthusiasts. First drop -Fishing inshore in 60 feet was slow and the water murky, producing maybe 5 fish and only 1 keeper. A move to 17 resulted in some larger fish, my largest was maybe 5+, the boats largest was perhaps 7.5.
Fishing small whole greenies and 10 oz of lead proved to be the most productive approach although later in the day the heave lessened and 8 oz worked as well.
Special thanks to Capt. Ray and all the regular sharpies on the Mad Gaffer for my Tog'en education thus far

Date Fished: 12/23/03
Location: N.E. of Manasquan inlet, mudhole area
Fishing Method: drift and bottom
Specie: Tautog
Size: 5#
Bait or Lure: green crabs
Water Depth: 100' or so it seemed
Water Temp.: 40's
Information : Took full advantage of an unseasonably mild December day aboard the Dauntless,(head boat), out of Point Pleasant for a 3/4 day trip. After a fairly smooth ride out we jigged for mackerel, (and numerous pesky dogfish), until about 12:30 or so. Almost everyone filled their coolers/buckets with fish. We spent the last couple of hours bottom fishing green crabs for tog, ling, and various trash fish. I won the pool with a 5# tog, (my first tog and my first pool win)! Hats off to an extremely courteous, professional, and friendly crew.

Date Fished: 12/22/03
Location: Rocks, wrecks
Fishing Method: Togg'en
Specie: Tautog
Size: up to 7+ lbs
Bait or Lure: Greenies
Water Depth: About 55 Ft.
Water Temp.:
Information : "I have to admit I'm getting better". Another fruitful day at Tog school with the Tog Professor (Capt. Ray).
On a day when not-too-many big fish were landed, I managed to nab 2 fish in the 7 to 8 lb category, that size being my personal best. A total of about 25 fish were boated by me, many throwbacks as well as 4 or 5 keepers were returned to the sea. Some on the boat may have landed 40 or so, many toy-togs. The afternoon action was best, the morning being rather slow. Of the 6 fares aboard I believe 5 of us had limits. Man...Those tog are a challenge and darn good eating! Merry, Merry & A Happy, Happy to All!

Boat Name: Madd Gaffer
Date Fished: 12/13
Location: Rocks, off shore - east nor'east of Shark R.
Fishing Method:
Specie: Tautog
Size: Up to 6+ lbs
Bait or Lure: Greenies
Water Depth: 105 ft.
Water Temp.:
Information : Another successful adventure aboard the Mad Gaffer with Capt. Ray and the regular "sharpies". I was fortunate to eek out a limit of toggies up to 6 or so lbs, largest fish aboard was maybe 7lbs. Fishing was tough and only had a real good bite for an hour between 9 and 10am. Otherwise you had to bait and wait.
Cold and windy morning but the afternoon shaped up to be brisk and pleasant with a few short feeding flurries here and there. I just may become a tog-master one-of-these-days after all.
