Boat Name: Ol' Salty II
Date Fished: 8-31-98
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Chunk & Troll
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 50lbs
Bait or Lure: mackerel
Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 77
Information : Only one Yellowfin caught on the night chunk. Plenty of live bait (mackerel & squid) available. The 50lb Yellowfin was caught on a Boston Mackerel. Trolling during the day produced 8 Longfin up to 40lbs. Trolling was excellent all day long. At one point we caught 2 fish, then started moving again with only 2 lines in the water, only to catch 2 more fish after moving only 100' or so. Huricane Bonnie seemed to have little effect on canyon fishing. It seems to be the same as most reports before the Huricane. Saw other boats also catching fish on the troll. Not quite a banner year, but seems to be a few fish for everyone. The twelve of us sure had a great time time.

Location: Mud Buoy
Fishing Method: chummin' and chunkin'
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 3-14#
Bait or Lure: bunker, spearing
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Fishing was amazing! Had non-stop bluefishing at first, caught 8 blues wihtin 1/2 an hour. Then the little tunny (aka false albacore) came into the slick and it was bye bye bluefishing for me. Rigged up a spearing on light tackle with a really really small tuna chum hook and had non-stop albie fishing for the rest of the trip. Albies were mostly 6-8# with a rare 17#er taking the pool. Also caught a small bluefin tuna, about 12#, on a bluefish rig with a bunker chunk, must have thought he was a bluefish. (the bluefin tuna was released because of the closed season though) Bent rdos and screaming reels to all!

Size: 13" to 25"
Bait or Lure: Sandworms
Water Depth: 20' to 46"

Information : Started fishing at noon, just before the high tide, at buoy 4. No luck, so continued west along the red side until buoy 14, and caught one short fluke. A lot of boats around buoy 14, but I didn't see much action, nor did we catch anything. Decided to cross over to the green side. On the way over, I spotted fish, on the fish finder, in the middle of the channel. We dropped in the lines and started catching fish immediately. Must have caught at least 25, in five drifts within 100 yards of the buoy, between 2:00 PM and 3:30 PM. There were lots of boats on the side of the channel, getting little action. We started throwing back anything under 17". Then the action stopped. Returned home with 16 fish. A great day. Tight lines.

Boat Name: Wreckless
Date Fished: 8/30/98
Location: Off LBI
Fishing Method: bottom fish
Specie: Fluke
Size: 22 inch
Bait or Lure: minnie-flounderbelly
Water Depth: 47-60
Water Temp.: 76
Information : Started fishing off the blue tower at about 11am. Saw a couple of fluke boated but we only boated one fish, a nice sea bass. Nothing like the action from last week when we had 50 fish in two days and returned early too. Headed out to the tires and caught a nice 22inch fluke and a few skates. Came back in to fish off the red tower for one drift from 55 feet to 45 and caught four more 15 to 18 inch fish. Rough seas at that point so we headed in. Big change from last week. Was it just the storm or have things changed? I hear the draggers come on the first, if the fish are still out there I guess they won't be for long.

Specie: Bluefish
Size: 5 to 10 lb
Bait or Lure: bunker
Water Depth: 70'
Water Temp.: 76
Information : Reports of Hurricane Bonnie scared off many fishermen, however it has not affected the bluefish. Except for a gentle swell, seas were calm on Tuesday and bluefishing was fantastic! Another body of 6 to 10 lb bluefish has moved in to an area 7 miles east of Brielle. Fishing was very good as everyone easily caught their limit. A few of the blues were caught on jigs but most were taken on bait. There were also a few albacore mixed in. The pool winner was Stephen Wood from Pine Bush NY with a 13 lb albacore. Paul Simmons from Trenton, NJ boated 10 blues and released 17 more. Monday night bluefishing was also excellent. The best area was 16 miles NE of Brielle. Limit catches were common. The blues were caught on bait and no one had any difficulty catching fish. Wednesday was a repeat of Tuesday. The swell was about the same and the winds were light. Bluefishing was very good for the first two hours and then slowed to a pick. The blues were running from 5 to 10 lbs and there were a few albacore mixed in. The seas were very comfortable and everyone caught fish. There were 19 anglers on board which included women and children and no one was seasick. The largest fish of the day was a 16 lb 4 oz albacore caught by 12 yr old Alexa Bogan. The Big Jamaica will sail every day and every night at 7:30am and 7:30pm. Next Sunday night (Aug 30) the 110' Atlantis will sail for blues when the big Jamaica is offshore. The Jamaica, is now taking reservations for Overnight Canyon Tuna trips, which will sail at 6pm August 30 and every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning August 30. Subject: Stolen Boat

Hi Guys, I'd appreciate your help with a Stolen Boat. On August 6th, an 18" Fisher Tourney Hawk, PA 7380AN (Pennsy registration) with a 1991 Evinrude E50JEI (35hp jet) was stolen from the docks in the State Park in Lambertville, NJ.. The chain holding the boat to the dock was cut, and the boat floated to the ramp and put on a trailer. The serial number of the engine is GO2635551. Please have your members keep an eye out for the boat and motor. If anyone has any info, please contact Officer Sharon Polyak at 609-397-3134. Thanks for the help, a fisherman is sitting at home and not getting on the river... it's killing him!

Followed the Ambrose channel outside to the fleet off the hook about a mile from the hook and took three keepers there. Instead of the wind slowing ,as predicted, it increased to the point that we gave up at 11:30am. fought hard to come in .broatched three times on the way in. The captain complained but I held the speed up and kept her on plane all the way past the hook. Stopped where we should have before going out, East of the ammo pier aand had consistant hits at about 33- 37 feet. Ended up with 7 keepers for the day. Not basd considering they were caught in the last hour before we left for home port.

Boat Name: Jamaica
Date Fished: 8/22/98
Location: 16 miles NE of Brielle
Fishing Method: Jigging
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 2-5lb
Bait or Lure: A-47
Water Depth: 60
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Bluefishing was very good Saturday. 2 lb to 5 lb blues were schooled up heavily and were caught on jigs. The best area was 16 miles NE of Brielle. Large areas of bluefish were visible, feeding on the surface. As we approached the surface feeding fish even larger schools were below. Readings from 15 to 40 feet thick were under the boat at times. Most anglers caught their limits and released more. 12 year Alexa Bogan kept 10 and released 7 more. The pool winner was: David Helfrich Bleinigsville, PA with a 5 lb blue. Night fishing has also been very good. The best area is 17 miles NE of our inlet. Friday night we tried a different area for some larger blues, but found only a pick. When fishing to the NE we have been putting together good catches of 3 lb to 8 lb blues. The pool winner was Albert Piotrowski Clifton, NJ with 10 lb blue. There are currently three areas NE of Brielle which are holding bluefish and all three are just a few miles apart. If one area does not produce we have been able to move to one of the other areas and still have time to make a good catch for the day. The weather conditions have been basically the same and the water temperature is holding steady between 74 and 76 degrees. More bait fish have been moving inshore so we should continue to have good bluefishing. The Big Jamaica will sail every day and every night at 7:30am and 7:30pm. For the next two Sunday nights (Aug 23 & 30) and Mondays the 110' Atlantis will sail for blues when the big Jamaica is offshore. The Jamaica, is now taking reservations for Overnight Canyon Tuna trips, which will sail at 6pm August 23, 30 and every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning August 30. There is still space available on Sunday August 23. Please call our office at 732-528-5014 for further information.

Bait or Lure: Fresh Mullet / Fluke Belly
Water Depth: 26 - 45 Ft.
Water Temp.: 72 - 74 Surface Temp.
Information : Decided to fish the deeper parts of Sandy Hook channel with fresh mullet. Started fishing around 6:30 AM off of # 4 can in channel and immediately caught (2 ) keeper fluke around 18 in.. We continued to use the same drift pattern for the rest of the morning and left for two reasons, too much boat traffic and the fish turned off at around 11:00 AM. Decided to call it a day and headed back in much to our surprise with (16) keeper fluke up to 3 1/2 Lbs. Back home in the driveway by 12:15 PM. I certainly hope that these fish arn't making an early exit as all these fish very nice size and very hungry. If this is any indication what the fall run will be, there will be a lot of coolers filled with filets for the winter.

Water Depth: 19 - 26 Ft.
Water Temp.: 72 - 74 Surface Temp.
Information : Cast netted a bucket of fresh finger mullet in the bay the evening before and decided to drift the ocean area as the majority of Raritan bay has been picked pretty clean of any decent size fluke. Started to drift off the beaches of Sandy Hook using the fresh finger mullet and immediately found a nice pocket of keeper fluke and shorts mixed in. Average size of these fish were 17-18" fish and they were very hungry for the fresh mullet. Excellent drift conditions with a nice west wind and incoming tide. Managed to put (14) keeper fluke in the cooler up to 4 lbs. in about 3 1/2 hours of fishing. As the day wore on the shorts started to dominate the catch and we called it quits around 1:00 PM. All in all, a good day of fluking. It appears that a new school of fluke has moved in from very deep water as these fish were very light tan and speckled, very heathly, and to our enjoyment good and hungry.

Water Depth: 45'
Water Temp.: 78
Information : Just had kidney surgery 3 weeks ago, and I've been dying to go fishing. Wednesday was beautiful but breezy. So I decided a fluke trip would be better therapy than a doctor's visit. Drifting was fast needed 8oz. I used a special squid that I get at the Chinese supermarket that is very long, thick, and very white. It,s better than fluke belly. You may not get as may small ones when you do get one it should be a keeper. I hooked the fluke around 4:30 and took my bring it in, because I thought it was decent. The mate tried to net it three times and each time it jumped out. I thought for sure I,d lose it. The fourth was sucessful and I breathed a sign of relief as the 15lb. test leader broke as the mate dumped the fluke on the deck. The $44 pool paid for the trip and chinese food for dinner. I wasn't going to clean that fish till I showed it off and took some pictures. I'm bucking to take your job Al Ristori [the luckiest man alive]

Water Depth: 49' ft

Information : Started fishing around 5PM, near the tip of the hook. Caught 3 Fluke in the first 10 minutes, including a 20" inch 3 pounder. Then the rain and lightning came and we went below and rode it out. After a 1/2 hour, we started fishing Bunker Chunks, hoping for a Bass. Within minutes my buddy Al was into a big fish, but it bit through his 40# test Mono leader. Two minutes later, I had a big blue on and it bit through my leader. Al finally landed a nice 25" striper, that was promptly released to fight another day

Soon after we boated and released a 60 pound white marlin and then went 5 for 7 and 2 for 2 on Longfin. The night bite, which has been non-exisent proved otherwise as we boated 2 nice yellowfin on the chunck and lost 2 others. Specie: Fluke
Size: keepers
Bait or Lure: belly & spearing
Water Depth: 50 +/-
Water Temp.: ?
Information : I went out on both 1/2 day trips on the Jamaica II on Saturday. In the morning there was not enough wind so fluking was on the slow side as we drifted the hills off Spring Lake. I did not get one keeper in the morning but others got as many as 4 or 5. For the afternoon trip, Captain Paul Bogan went south and found a good drift off Lavalette as the afternoon breezes kicked in. I had six fluke to 3 & 1/2 pounds within an hour and a half while several fishermen took home limit catches. Of course, the guy who had never held a pole before almost won the pool. His buddy was so clueless that the Captain had to get on the PA from the wheelhouse to tell him he had a fish on and should reel it up, NOW!! I skipped the morning trip on Sunday. In the afternoon, a return to the Lavalette area produced good fishing again but I saw fewer limits. I had five fluke to 3+ pounds. Unfortuneatly, I heard the morning trip that I skipped was the better trip on Sunday. The pool winners had fish in the 4-5 pound range. Fluking is picking up. I would get out there and enjoy it!!

Trolling inside the tip of Toms Canyon they quickly boated 2 longfin and added 2 more later along witha bunch of dolphin. However, the highlight of the day was when Burgess baited a 200 pound Blue Marlin that made the mistake of coming into the pattern and the charter spent the next 15 minutes bring the fish to the boat for pictures and the release. The Blue hit a Jet Lure in front of a Reel Seat Spreader Bar and was the foruth Blue Marlin fought by the Canyon Runner so far this year and the third brought to the boat and relaesed.

Specie: Bluefish
Size: @ 5pounds
Bait or Lure: bunker
Water Depth: 40
Water Temp.: warm
Information : Set out to fish on the Queen Mary with Ed(FSRM), his daughter and two other associates. The Queen Mary was out of service for engine service and switched over to the Cock Robin only to find out much later that it is now called the Holiday. The boat was crowded due to the status of the Queen Mary. Several people did not belong on the boat or any boat for that matter. The fishing was slow but picked up to a blitz the last hour. A monster fluke was also caught along with the blues. Unfortunately the monster slipped off the gutting table and became food for the fishes and not the guy who caught him. Once again I came in second in a pool. It was OK because first place was captured by Ed. Kudos to the mates Brad and Bill for helping the helpless and allowing the "fishermen" to retain their sanity. A note to Ray: territorial perogative is only found in lower species, listen to the mates when they tell you to walk a fish or allow someone else to move around you. Another good day on the water with a little excitement tossed in at the Manasquan inlet with a overturned boat and all hands plucked from the sea. Easy does it.

We moved to the Leonardo side of the ammo pier and picked up one fluke as the drift was a bit slower. That was it. Moved back out to the ocean and only caught those wonderful winged fish. Then we moved back to the pier and there was absolutely no drift. I then decided maybe the river would provide a drift. So we moved to the Shewsbury River and picked up one more fluke. Water Depth: 37 - 60 Ft.
Water Temp.: 68 - 73 SurfacTemp.
Information : Left Atlantic Highlands marina around 6:45 AM and stopped at the inside tip of Sandy Hook to drift. Picked up only (1) keeper fluke and a bunch of robins. Left this area and went to the Ambrose channel and Swash channel where we stayed the remainder of the trip. Had a constant pick of fluke as we would hit different pockets of fish. Drift was on the fast side until the tide changed and then we had wind against tide situation and could use 4 - 5 oz. sinkers to drift properly. Finished the day up with exactly (20) keeper fluke to 4 Lbs. (1) 4 Lb. weakfish and approximately (12 -13) shorts that were returned to the water unharmed. It appears that a new batch of fish has come in from the ocean as these fish were the bright reddish tan in coloration and were hungry. I am happy to say that these fluke " ate their last meals " of spearing and fluke belly. Will continue to try the evening weakfishing during the week, as it appears the fish are just not biting real good during the daylight hours with all the boat traffic on the water. All our sucess has been in the early evening a couple hours before the tide turns.

Water Depth: 120+

Information : saturday my partner, joe litto, and i were jigging the ba buoy (you showed us this trick!) when a 15+ lb dolphin SLAMMED my jig. it was awesome watching him zero in on the lure then greyhound for the horizon! i managed to get him to the boat (on 10lb spinning gear) before the hook pulled just as joe was about to grab the leader. naturally that pumped the adrenals a bit ... actually enough for us to give it another try sunday ... and we hit it big (its relative mind you). we were pulling red & white and purple & black zukers off the riggers ... zig-zagging amongst the lobster pots at the oil wreck when BAM ... 30 yards behind the boat a bull was dancing on the end of joe's line ... when i slowed the boat down ...BAM the red & white went off and there was a second bull making like a cruise missle on the end of my line ... i was lucky to land 'em, as it managed to tangle me in the lobster pot flag for awhile, but after a 2 min tug of war the line pulled free and i managed to bring him in ... not before he did another series of pirouettes about 20 feet behind the boat though. both fish went 15+ lbs. to finish the day ... as we were heading in joe noticed a swirl in front of the boat near a pot i was heading towards so he decided to investigate by climbing on top of the gunnel ... as he's watching i hear him pleading rather loudly ..."dolphin! c'mon hit it .... hit it" ... i actually thought it was wishful thinking on his part, not an exhortation for an ichthyoid creature to blast the feather when ... BAM the port side rigger snapped and there was the third mahi of the day makin' like a yo yo on speed ... this fish (which measured 37 in cfl and went 15.25 lbs) was landed and made for a rather tasty bbq sunday evening. in between the double and the last mahi joe boated a small skippie on the purple and black zuker ... very frustrating though ... skippies were busting on the surface all the way between the ba and the arundo ... but wouldn't touch anything ... also boated the first spanish mack ever for our boat, the skipjack, on saturday ... on get this, a red & white umbrella rig pulled at 1100 rpms at rormer shoal ... that's just not supposed to happen!

We had no bait so we trolled and landed several blues to 5 lbs and lost a quite few too. Saw many schools of small tuna/bonita but was unable to land any so I cannot be certian of the specific type. The tuna were blitzing all over, should have had my tuna gear from the get go and I would have been in. The seas were flat and clear. Saw a baby sea turtle of about 10 lbs and headed for home by 1pm. Date Fished: 8/2/98
Location: Manasquan river
Fishing Method: Sandies,Killies, and Jigs
Specie: Weakfish
Size: 1-3 lb.
Bait or Lure: A/A
Water Depth: 10-15'
Water Temp.: 83
Information : Started at 0500 fishing the holes away from the main channel, west of the canal with sandworms on floating jigheads. Weak after weak was boated with both of us hooked up as often as not. When the worms were gone switched to rubber worms. Drove the flukers around us crazy. About 0700 switched to fluking but still used the floating jigs (now sweetened with killies). Caught a dozen "last year legal" flatfish before running back through the canal at 0830. Where were you Mike? You missed a nice morning.

Location: Barnegat Inlet
Fishing Method: Bottom
Specie: Bluefish
Size: to 3lb
Bait or Lure: squid/killie
Water Depth: 30ft

Information : Started out at 7:30am fluking on outgoing tide but too much seaweed to fish the inlet. Headed outside into 5-6' seas and fluked but ended up pulling in a dozen little cocktail blues. Only a few short fluke were to be had. On the way in the inlet we worked the rocks for a few bigger blues on metal. Tons of baitfish in the inlet during the incoming tide with lots of fish showing up in the finder.

Boat Name: None
Date Fished: 8/1/98
Location: LBI Surf
Fishing Method: Surf
Specie: Fluke
Size: Up to 17"
Bait or Lure: Cut Frozen/salt bunker
Water Depth:
Water Temp.: Mid 60's
Information : Fished during low tide with no action...about an hour to hour and a half after low tide, action was non-stop. Current running North to South last Saturday, so dropped baits to the South of beach front jetty. Top bottom rigs,5-0 hooks with 3-ounce pyramid sinker, and cast onto the shoal, and then gently reeled back into the slew. In one hour, had six keepers to 17", threw back another 10. Find a hole along the beach, and just wait through low tide...those fish must sit on the East side of the sandbars when the tide goes out, and then move in numbers back to the west side when the tide comes back in. One of my best surf fishing days ever, and gathered quite a crowd on a sunny summer Saturday at noon.

Boat Name: EGGMAN
Date Fished: August 1, 1998
Location: Sandy Hook, Ocean, Flynns Knoll
Fishing Method: Drifting
Specie: Fluke
Size: 15 - 19 Inches
Bait or Lure: Spearing and Fluke belly
Water Depth: 19 - 42 Feet
Water Temp.: 69 - 73 Surface Temp.
Information : Left Atlantic Highlands harbor around 6:30 AM to avoid all the boats fishing in the Leonardo fluke tournament, however, the north wind made crossing Raritan bay a real challenge. We decided to fish the ocean side where we have had very good luck. First stop netted a 17" fluke and then nothing except sand sharks. Worked our way down all the way to Deal in and out and still no fluke. We then decided to come back up north inside the Hook and along the edge of Flynns knoll and managed (13) keepers to 3 1/2 lbs. Called it a day at 2:30 PM and headed back to the marina. It appears that a new batch of fluke have moved into the bay in the last week or so. Will try our hand at weakfishing again on Thursday and Friday night and try fluking again on Saturday.
