Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: August 29, 1997
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Blue Marlin
Size: 500+ pounds
Bait or Lure: Zucker
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 73
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie took the Mike Mazzucco charter out to the Hudson Canyon for a one day trolling trip on the Canyon Runner on Friday. A slow pick of longfin put 5 in the boat, however, the excitement came when some ate a purple zucker trolled from the short rigger and proceeded to dump the spool on the 50W International. Backing down hard to prevent the loss of what was believed to be a Big-Eye, Captain Dulanie saw a 500+ pound 13 feet long Blue Marlin exit the water. Once realizing what really ate the Zucker the battle ensued and the fish was whipped in 30 minutes and laid alongside the boat. The hock was removed and the fish regained its strength and swam away to fight, and hopefully be released, another day.

Information : Me and Big Lou Takacs got out by Bouy 16 by 6am. Drift started off extremely fast with good action till the incoming tide changed against the wind around 8am. Even though there was little drift, the action was incredible at times, with 3 fish on at once in my 12' yacht. All the fish were above 2 pounds with two in the 5-6lb class. The little bottles of sheddar crab oil sold in most tackle shops makes a HUGE difference. In about 5 hrs we had limited out, in addition to lsoing about a dozen fish while trying to fish 4 poles in a tiny boat. Once again I got outfished in my own boat.

Information : Captain Phil Dulanie had the Tom Strong Charter from Philadelphia, PA out on the Canyon Runner for an overnight tuna trip on Saturday and Sunday. With the weatherman blowing another forecast, the Canyon Runner and 250+ other boats spent Saturday night and Sunday in much higher than forecasted seas. To top it off, the presences of so many boats proved detrimental to the fishing. While a handful of boats, maybe 10, out of the 250+ had fish at night all others were shut out. On the troll on Sunday we managed to pull 4 longfin put still ended up with a disapointing catch.

Date Fished: August 15
Location: Hot Dog/Ham Bone
Fishing Method: Trolling/Chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 65 lbs to 80 lbs
Bait or Lure: Squidchain/Butterfish
Water Depth: 130 - 200 ft
Water Temp.: 77 degrees
Information : We started fishing at approximately 7:00 am amongst a fleet of 40 - 50 boats out on the hot dog. The chunking action was very slow so we decided to troll around the dog's edges until the chunking heated up. To our surprise, we hooked up with a nice 60 lb white marlin within an hour or so of trolling. Within 15 minutes, we had another white hit a flat line but it spit the hook almost immediately. Despite a tremendous bite the previous day, the fish never turned on the entire day. We heard reports of perhaps 5 - 7 fish in the entire fleet. We did manage to troll up a nice 65 lb yellowfin and a dolfin, however. By 3:30 pm most boats had pulled their lines and were heading in. We broke camp too and began the journey in however, we made sure to head towards the ham bone where we heard some reported hookups on yellows and lots of bait. Sure enough, our fish finder lit up with bait and fish marks about 1 mile north of the bone. Within 5 minutes of chunking, we were hooked up with a 75 lb yellowfin followed shortly thereafter by an 80 lber on a Penn 30. Unfortunately, a large tiger showed up on the scene as well and broke up the party. We contacted several boats who were headed offshore and they were able to pull in a few nice 70 to 80 lb yellowfin. We also heard reports of 3 - 4 yellowfin in the 150 lb range caught the previous evening (10:30 pm) at the hot dog but the bite turned off for the rest of the night (and following day!) Apparently, there has been a patern of hot bites at the hot dog every other day. Hope you pick the right one!

Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 15 to 25 pounds
Bait or Lure: Umbrella Rigs
Water Depth: 15'
Water Temp.: 72
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and Wayne Bushnell decided to postpone a scheduled overnight canyon trip due to seas which were forcasted to build to 8 foot in the canyons but were already 6 foot on the beach. Instead, the John Reily charter from Patriot Roofing in Cherry Hill, NJ spent Wednesday trolling Stripers in those 6 foot seas with an occansional 8 footer. Their decision to stay inshore not only paid off in avoiding an uncomfortable night in the canyon, but provided plenty of fish for the box. In only three hours of trolling 3 Stripers between 15 and 25 pounds were put in the boat, 5 shorts were released and a few dozen bluefish provided continuous action.

Water Depth: 15'
Water Temp.: 73
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie had the Gerry Carney charter out on the Canyon Runner for a day of Striped Bass fishing on the Shrewsbury Rocks. Once again the Bass cooperated and we caught 15 before 9:00 a.m. all on umbrella rigs. Of the 15, 4 were keepers with the largest tipping the scales at 20 pounds. Unfortunatly, once the boat traffic pick-up, which is always a problem on the weekend, the Bass turned off. However, moving offshore proved effective as we put a few dozen bluefish in the boat up to 14 pounds. The way the Bass have been cooperating all summer should indicate a banner fall and we should be into these fish through November.
