High hook today had 4, some customers had none. Hopefully after this weather goes threw we can find some life in the ocean, if not we'll be keeping our eyes open for the weakfish. Last season we started on the 13th of the month, so we still have time for some devine intervention!! If not, I'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Plenty of bait in the bay so all the signs are there for a good fall run...........capt.ron

Bait or Lure: Squid & Spearing
Water Depth: 35 Ft.
Water Temp.: 72 Degrees
Information : Capt. Paul had the Monique Baureis charter on board the Bounty Hunter. Monique had her family visiting from Germany and wanted to treat them to a day of Fluke fishing before their return home. We thought we could get the day in but the East wind and SE swell made for difficult conditions. We managed to pull a few short Fluke off Seaside but the endless schools of Snapper Blues made it impossible to keep a bait on the hook. By 11AM ocean motion had taken it's toll and we called it a day. I am now booking Bluefish & Fluke charters for September. Anyone interested give me a call at 732-323-8700.

Angler Name : Greg

Boat Name: Bold Eagle
Date Fished: 8/25-26
Location: Toms Canyon
Fishing Method: Chunk/Troll
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 80lbs
Bait or Lure: Butters/Ballyhoo
Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 78
Information : Got out to the Toms around 1am, set up on the chunk. Marked a lot of bait but few squid came up. At about 5am went 1 for 3 on the chunk. When the sun came up birds and tuna were all around. Went on the troll but didn't get them to hit. We then jumped off a white marlin, released about a 300lb Blue Marlin and finally boated a double header of yellowfin. The weather was rough but a little better than expected. The tuna were filled with squid, maybe the chunk bite would have been better if we could have gotten our hands on some livies.

Boat Name: FISHERMEN
Date Fished: 8/26/06
Location: ocean
Fishing Method:
Specie: Fluke
Size:
Bait or Lure:
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Had to change the game plan today...and I hate doing that! Strong East wind and too much current to fish the outside in the channels, so we headed to the Northern part of Ambrose Channel. Found more fish on the flats, some nice keepers 2 to 4 1/2 pounds. Not much at all in the channel. Could have been the conditions thou. I'm surprised we caught anything at all with the lousy day. Capt.Frank had good bluefishing again last night, only his night started out on the wrong foot...First fish of the night and he gets a 5/0 right in the fore arm! Ouch! Couldn't pull it out so he left it in till they got in...how's that for dedication! Capt.Ron

Boat Name: jenny lee
Date Fished: 8/25/06
Location: hudson canyon
Fishing Method: troll/chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 70lbs
Bait or Lure: squid/ballyhoo
Water Depth: 513
Water Temp.: 77
Information : capts kevin gerrity and dave bender took tom and tim cunningham of colts neck on an overnighter to the hudson canyon friday august 25th. the weather was somewhat suspect for friday all week but 4am friday morning noaa posted variable winds friday and 5-10 knots s/e sat- wed, we were really pumped. after talking with several boats on their way in on friday morning we heard the bite was good and the weather was even better. after about 50 miles out it started to pick up and by the time we reached the edge it was flat out ugly. we trolled in 5-8 foot seas all afternoon and pulled the hook on a white and boated a 40 lb longfin at dusk. we anchored in 500' of water a hoped the chunk would produce as it had all week. if you hope in one had and poop in the other you know what you'll have at the end of the day. we chunked 4 really nice yellowfins to 70 lbs but not the bite we had expected. at about 11pm the sword rod screamed off and we were on a huge fish, the fish took us to the bow and around the pulpit several times. after an hour plus battle we were back in the cockpit ready to stick our swordfish when we finally saw the fish, it was a 350 plus hammerhead. what a let down. we decided to leave the canyon at dawn and returned home in severe thunderstorms, some of the sport boats that braved the weather did troll some fish on saturday morning. my hats go off to those guys, and i'd like to speak with the guys at noaa.

Information : Nice fishing today, with a boat load of customers, not normal! Usually, everything is against us..wind, tide, current. Had a very nice pick going on the incoming, more keepers than shorts and it's not too often we can say that. Larry Marchiony, Orangeberg, N.Y. landed the big fish of the day. 6.4 pounds. Had several others that were very nice also. High hooks had 6 keepers, then some 5's, 4's and 3's like that. Saw 2 draggers who worked the area last night, so I don't expect this to last too much longer. We did find a few fish down the beach, some keepers and Sea Bass......capt.ron

Will try again next week end, but they made us wait to long to open the season up as previous week we hit BFT 30" but had to release.

MARYLOU CREW Sportfishing

Angler Name : Capt. Darren
E-Mail : CaptDarren@newjerseycharterboat.com
Boat Name: Mary Lou Crew
Date Fished: 8/24/06
Location: Ambrose Channel
Fishing Method: Drifting
Specie: Fluke
Size: 23
Bait or Lure: stripped bait
Water Depth: 55 Feet
Water Temp.: 73
Information : Capt. Darren and mate Jeff Volker had the boys from Atlantic Grinding on board for a mixed day of fishing. We started off looking for blues and had a little trouble at first. A move out to 17 fathoms paid off as we found some fish on the surface feeding. We jigged enough fish to make them happy and we decided to switch over to the flatties. Starting at the Sandy Hook Channel looked good, but after the first drift with two keepers in the box, it was all Sea Robins. I decided to move out to the Ambrose and it paid off! We ended the day with a dozen nice fat keepers up to 3 pounds.

Angler Name : Capt. Bruce Miller
E-Mail : cptmarlin1@aol.com
Boat Name: Mirage Charters
Date Fished: 8/23/06 to 8/24/06
Location: Hudson Canyon / West Elbow
Fishing Method: Trolling & chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40 to 70 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Artificials, ballyhoo, live squid, butterfish
Water Depth: 350 to 965 ft.
Water Temp.: 77 to 79,8 degrees
Information : Our first Canyon open boat charter was a very successful one for Santino Iavarone & Lou DeRosa of Toms River, NJ, Capt. Charlie Mittelstad & George Sealey of Salt Point, NY and Mike & Lou Schenone of Bridgewater, NJ. The trip consisted of four hours of trolling & twelve hours of chunking .When we arrived at the Hudson, above the West Elbow we found "green water" with 79 degree temperature. I did talk to Mark on the Canyon Runner on the way out as he was headed in & he said the fish were there, even in the green water ! We started our troll at 2 PM and finally had our first yellowfin on as the center rigger screamed way back in the spread (green bird with the always dependable "green machine"). Also trolling skirted Hoo's & Reel Seat spreader bars along with other artificials. With Capt. Charlie on the 50 stand-up he brought the 45 lb. yellowfin to gaff & we made another pass to the save mark on the GPS. Within 25 ft. of there both riggers sounded off, then a third down the middle went too! As luck would have it two lines crossed & we lost two fish while Lou Schenone boated a 65-70 lb. yellowfin. We did not have another hit and at 7 PM I dropped the hook on the West Wall in 514 ft. of water. The bait was so thick there ( at times 60 to 100 ft. of solid readings) that I knew we could be in for a good chunk ! Ten minutes after setting up a 50 sang out & a 35-40 lb. longfin was put in the boat then another. We had about a two hour lull before we had the two yellowfins on, losing one to the rudder, boating the other. Santino Iavarone boated his first tuna, a 60 lber. It was a steady pick till 3 AM when our deep sword line clicked off in the rigger. Mike Schenone fought & brought to the baot a 150 to 175 Scalloped Hammerhead shark. We tagged & released the Hammer after everyone got their pictures of it. It remained quiet till about 4 AM when all hell broke loose 2, 3 more yellows on at the same time. We had a "mad dog" bite till 5:30 AM and put 13 of 11 more yellowfin in the boat. All of the tuna were hooked on live squid. Lou DeRosa managed to jig two yellowfin with a 16 oz. Vike jig. Al the fish were between 40 & 70 lbs. After that we had one more at 6 AM , then pulled in all the lines & headed for the barn. I sort of knew the weather was just too good. At 60 miles from the beach we hit a tremendous front with heavy rain, seas & wind of 50 to 55 knots. We got past that in about one-half hour, it calmed down again, and we were on our way again. Working the trip with me, Capt. Bruce Miller was mate Jarred Polara & Capt. Tom Walsh.

Not as much life there, but we still managed some fish in the deep. Didn't see the life on the edge like last week. I would imagine these babies have thier running shoes on. Trolling Canyon Runner Green Machine Spreader Bars, Green Machines behind birds, and zucchini tuna clones. There first 4 fish on the troll were nice 60-70 pound yellowfin and then they got hammered by a big Allison that ate a Green Machine Spreader Bar. Date Fished: August 22-23
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Overnighter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 30-70
Bait or Lure: Canyon Runner Squid Spreader Bars and Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 50-100 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 78.5
Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie and Mark DeCabia and Mike Zajac had the Todd Polumbo charter from Darian, Conn out Tuesday to Wednesday and went right back to where they finished up on the chunk half way between the Hudson and Toms Canyon in 500 feet of water and put the lines in the water on the troll as they had the yellowfin up on top. Unfortunately those fish did not bite so they headed off to 300 fathoms and joined a small fleet that had Capt. Mark DeBlasio and the Hooked Up 2 in it and that fleet had a good bite before Phil got into it and he only pulled 1 70 pound yellowfin out of it in 2 hours of trolling. They ran back in to 500 feet and set up for the chunk. The huge hoards of squid were back again and it did not take long for the tuna to find them. Jigging and live squid was all it took to get the bite going and by 2:30am they had 22 yellowfin in the boat. From then on they released the rest and by 6am had a total of 46 yellowfin to their credit for the night with 24 released and were on their way back home.

Boat Name: Hooked Up
Date Fished: August 22-23

Fishing Method: Overnighter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 30-70
Bait or Lure: Canyon Runner Squid Spreader Bars and Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 100-300 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 78.5
Information : Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the Steve Roberts from Philadelphia charter out Tuesday to Wednesday on the Hooked Up 2 and went right back to where they finished up on the troll Monday night in 300 fathoms between the Toms and Hudson and put the lines in the water on the troll as they had the yellowfin up on top immediately. From 2pm to 5pm they got into a nice pick of fish putting 9 in the boat. Again the fish favored Canyon Runner Green Machine Bars and Ballyhoo. The bite turned off around 5pm and eventually they ran back inshore and set up on the chunk in 500 feet of water. The huge hoards of squid were back again and it did not take long for the tuna to find them. From 9pm to 1pm they had 12 yellowfin (releasing a few) and then they hooked something big at 1pm on 60 pound flouro leader on a Penn International 16VSX. They ended up fighting it until 7am in the morning and finally broke him off. It hit like a sword but never jumped once. They think it was a huge sword but never got a good look at it. With everyone on the boat spent from the epic battle and 21 yellowfin to their credit they decided to come home. As they were leaving they had yellowfin busting the water all around them.

Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia along with mate Mike Zajac took the Dave Miguel charter out Monday on an overnighter and got called in by Capt. DeBlasio already had 7 in the boat when Dulanie arrived but the bite stayed on for a while and Miguel and his charter went 5 for 6 on the troll. The fish were all nice yellowfin in the 50-75 pound class. The fish were eating Canyon Runner Green Machine bars, bonita plugs, ballyhoo skirted with moldcraft chuggers. Capt. Dulanie ran into the edge in 500 feet of water to set up on the chunk. As soon as the lights came on they had tons and tons of squid around the boat and it was not long before the first bite came on 60 pound flouro and a live squid at 80 feet. They had a real good pick going all night with the best of it from 11pm to 1am and took a bunch of fish on jigs as well as live squid. They ended the evening early at 4:30am going 14 for 16 on 30-45 pound yellowfin on the chunk. In all total they ended the trip with 19 yellowfin (releasing 4).

Specie: Blue Marlin
Size: 350-400 Pounds
Bait or Lure: Canyon Runner Squid Spreader Bars and Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 100-300 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 78.5
Information : Capt. Mark DeBlasio was back at it Monday on an overnighter on the Hooked-Up 2 and ran back to where we were Saturday in 300 fathoms of water and found the fish back on top. Trolling that area with the Jim Sullivan charter from Prudential they got into a great bite of nice size yellowfin in the 40-70 pound class and in 2 hours of trolling put 14 yellowfin in the boat. The fish ate Canyon Runner Green Machine bars, bonita plugs, and ballyhoo skirts with mini-mambas(green). The tuna bite slowed day after 4pm as all he did was pick another yellowfin but the marlin bite turned on. They first went 1 for 2 on white marlin releasing one that ate a green machine and then a nice blue marlin crashed the pattern. It missed the baits in tight and ended up hanging itself on a green machine behind a bird long down the middle. They fought the blue for 45 minutes and ended up with the release of the 350-400 pound Blue. Instead of staying the night with a great catch already in the boat they left to come early and got back to the dock in the middle of the night with 15 40-70 pound yellowfin on ice and a Blue Marlin and White Marlin release.

With the slow fishing going on around Sandy Hook, Tom and I decided to do a try at crabbing up in the Shrewsbury River. We left our slip in the Atlantic Highlands Marina at 7:00 AM and arrived at the Oceanic Bridge about 7:30. The tide just started out as we settled in on two anchors just East of the bridge. Tom used droplines while I tried four traps; both using some frozen bunker that Tom has been saving for who knows how long. I also tried cow tendons that I picked up from work. Tom's handlines worked the best, putting two dozen nice keepers in the bucket. The tendons did not bring in any crabs. About 10:30 we went looking for Fluke in the bay, finding one 16" Fluke. Specie: Fluke
Size: 17-20 inches
Bait or Lure: Robin belly and squid strips
Water Depth: 80 feet

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: August 17-18
Location: hudson
Fishing Method: overnighter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 30-110 pounds
Bait or Lure: Canyon Runner Bars/Ballyhoo/Jets/Clones
Water Depth: 300 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 78.5
Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia along with mate Mike Zajac took the Damien Romeo charter out to the Hudson Thursday to Friday for an overnighter and reached the southwest corner of 100 fathom line around 6pm then ran 3 more miles off the edge until they found nicer water. They put it on the troll there and then trolled down to Mark DeBlasio who had just boated a longfin. Once they got there they had all the life and bait they wanted but could not raise a tuna to the pattern. At 9pm they headed into the edge back in at 100 fathoms and set up for the night chunk. They chuncked hard in there and finally got a good chunk bite going on live squid and sardines on 60 pound flouro. By 4am they had gone 8 for 12 on 30-50 pound yellowfin and put a nice 140 pound mako in the boat. The charter then informed them that they wanted to catch a marlin so they got up on the troll early at 4:30am and by 6am they did a double on white marlin back offshore in 300 fathoms of 78.5 degree water. Just before ending the trip at 8am they hooked another white and released that as well going 3 for 4 on white in just a few hours of trolling.

Boat Name: jenny lee
Date Fished: 8/18/06
Location: hudson canyon
Fishing Method: troll/chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 50lbs
Bait or Lure: squid
Water Depth: 600'
Water Temp.: 79
Information : capt's jimmy gahm and kevin gerrity took ken switzer of nyc and friends on an overnighter to the hudson canyon aug18/19. the troll was uneventful as three white marlin were in the spread and on was lost. the chunk was not much better as we went 1-2 on swordfish and 1-5 on 50 lb yellowfin. the weather was excellant, but the fushing was slow.

Capt. Mark DeBlasio had Lane out on an overnighter Thursday to Friday on the Hooked Up 2 and headed out to where Phil finished up on Thursday morning just south of the Hudson Canyon in 300 fathoms of 78.5 degree water and found the nice water and picked 1 yellowfin and missed two trolling from 2pm to 8pm and went 1 for 2 on white marlin. But again like with our buddy Wednesday the fish came up for Mark late at 8:30pm and he went 6 for 7 on big yellowfin from 60-110 pounds. The fish ate everything but Canyon Runner Green Machine bars and Purple/Black squid were attacked along with a green machine behind a bird and ballyhoo. The shot of 6 tuna were in 250 fathoms. Capt. Mark decided to drift there for the night but did not get a bite on the chunk. Up on the troll in the morning he quickly went 2 for 3 on whites and then around 8am got another barrage of yellowfin going 6 for 8 on again nice yellowfin up to 110 pounds. Again they ate almost everything in the pattern. Mark and came home with 3 whites and 13 yellowfin including 2 over 100 pounds.

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: August 16-17
Location: hudson/Dip
Fishing Method: overnighter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-80
Bait or Lure: Canyon Runner Bars/Green Machines
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 80
Information : Capt Mark DeBlasio was offshore on a day troll Wednesday and hit the Hudson Canyon only to find green water and no life. He proceeded to head out to the 500 fathom tongue and then northeast towards the 500 fathoms of the dip. Half way in between the two canyons on the 500 he had a ton of life - birds, whales and bait and picked one yellowfin on a green machine but did not get any repeats to he kept heading north. He made it all the way into the Dip and then inshore to the 100 fathom line without another bite so he turned back and headed back to where he had his one bite to finish up the trip. Just short of there in 300 fathoms he found the tuna and from 4pm to 6pm had over 20 bites putting 10 nice yellowfin in the 40-70 pound class in the boat. The fish ate almost anything but Canyon Runner Mini-Mamba Spreader Bars, Green Machine Bars and Ballyhoo seemed to produce the best. Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia with mate Mike Zajac took the Bill Stevens charter out Wednesday to the Hudson Canyon and just kept going until they found nice water. They made it all the way to the tip of the 500 fathom tongue and put the lines in the water. They trolled down the west wall of the 500 fathom line to the southwest corner of the mouth and turned around to where they found the best water on the west wall of the 500 fathom tongue half way between the tip and the mouth. They had the tuna up on top and had a bunch of white marlin in the pattern from 5pm to 8pm but they only produced one white. They ended up calling in a couple boats and those boats got tuna including one boat with 6 yellowfin and 4 longfin in the afternoon troll. They set up on the drift right there for the night chunk and ended up the night without a touch and had to come home to do a turn around. The boat that stayed put a 5 bagger of yellowfin in the boat so the fish were definitely there.

Information : Mirage --8/14/06: Capt. Bruce Miller with mate Jarred Polara took the Claire Beougart charter from Riveredge, NJ for a day of fluke fishing. Fished south of Manasquan Inlet off the Bayhead Water Tower. At first it was a lot of throwbacks ,all around 15 to 16 1/4 inches. We released over 50 fluke in that size range but the charter was happy with that. At about 11 AM on the tide change the fluke got bigger & Claire put a fluke in the boat that we weighed at 6 1/4 lbs. The group put in another 6 in the 16" to 17" in the boat until 11 yr. old Michael Beougart put a 4 1/12 lb'er on the deck ! At first 14 yr. old Joan Marie Beougart was the "hot hook" putting about 6 throwbacks back in the water. Accompanying his family was Henry, the father. At 87 yrs.he was fishing just as good as everyone on the boat! The wind picked up and forced 8 to 10 ounces--then it was time to head for the dock. All the fluke were caught in 30 to 35 ft. of water. A great day was had by the Beougart family, I'm sure.

Bait or Lure: Canyon Runner Squid Spreader Bars and Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 50-100 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 81
Information : Capts. Phil Dulanie and Mark DeCabia and mate Mike Zajac took the Brian Bonnett charter out to the Hudson Canyon Sunday for an overnighter and found the whales, water, bait and tuna in on the west elbow of the Hudson. However, with all that life (including seeing the yellowfin busting water up on top) they only managed to pull 3 60 pound yellowfin out of there on the troll in the afternoon when those fish moved over to the east elbow. Those fish ate Zucchini Tuna Clones and Canyon Runner 9 inch Zucchini Spreader Bars. They decided to drift that area at night because of all the life but when the wind came up to 25 knots they dropped the hook and spent the night at anchor. At night they did not get a bite on the tuna but did have an 80 pound swordfish that unfortunately pulled the hook at the boat. The group spent the morning trolling over the east wall out to the 100-square where they pick one yellowfin but did not get another touch the rest of the trip. That fish ate a ballyhoo/moldcraft combo.

Trolled until 7:30 working hard with the free jumpers without a touch! worked back to the 100 line and set the anchor for the chunk aruond 8:30. I switched over to some trolling and setup four rods and within 20 yards all four got hit with big Blues. I bought all four in and released them. Started again and the same thing it was unbelievable. I have recieved many E mails and comments from customers on other boats as well as tackle shops and the guy who owns his own boat. You all know how serious I take what I do. I am now asking for everyones help.......We are about to become a thing of the past. The Government is proposing an amendment to the Magnuson Stevens Act, that will basically shut down Fluke fishing and other species down the road. We are trying desperatly to change a few Congressmans views on the proposal they have submitted. I am asking all of you to call Congressman Jim Saxton at 732-914-2020. tell his secretary that, you are not in his district, but you are a fishermen and the proposed change to the Magnuson act will effect you directly and to please reconsider his view. If this goes through, in 2 years there will be no Party, Charter or Recreational fishing as we know it...The other thing you can do is become a member of the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA). I have 300 applications on hand if you would like one. The cost is $35. This gives us a voice in D.C. and Trenton. They send letters and postcards and have direct E mail to take action when needed. I would rather see you miss a day of fishing with me, for the cost involved, then to let this pass. I would never try to solict money from anyone unless it was a matter of life or death! At this point in time, that's where we are at........Please help in any way you can, even a phone call will let these people know that we are united...thank you, Capt.Ron Santee/Fishermen

The trolling was very slow but we found plenty of bait, whales and dolphins and set up near the same spot from the previous trip. We managed to pull one 50lb yellowfin at night at about 9:30pm, a baby Mako, and oddly enough a huge Mantaray. In the morning the trolling was more of the same, slow. The last hour we dropped for some tiles and picked 5 nice 8-15lb tiles before heading home.

After 4 hours of uneventfull trolling which produced 1 Mahi we found fish not just breaking but exploding on the surface in the 30-80lb class. This went on for over 2 hours and we went 1 for 6 on jigs before dark. Chunking at night produced a limit catch of nice yellowfin from 45-80lbs, the action was hot from 10pm on and by 4am the boys were ready to go home.
