Fishing Method: Bottom
Specie: Fluke
Size: 17"
Bait or Lure: Squid Killie
Water Depth: 50'
Water Temp.:
Information : We went to the ocean side off Sandy Hook looking for some fluke. I put three keepers in the box 16 1/2" and two 17" fish and had two shorts when the wind changed direction and then nearly stopped and so did the fluke. Only two very short fish for the next three hours. Nothing but jumbo skates, not even a sea robin! We decided to hit the reef and caught 2 keeper sea bass and seveal trow backs. It became so hot out there that we packed it in early and was out of the water by three. We ran into a ranger checking fish at the dock. He said that there may not be an stripper season in the fall if the new regulations go into effect. Any one know what the new changes may be? I thought that they were looking at making it a one fish per man day with no slots or bonus fish. What happend to the weakfish? What happened to the Porgies? Did the commercial guys wipe them out again?

Fishing Method: Trolling & Chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: Up to 60 Lbs.
Bait or Lure: Lures & Butterfish
Water Depth: 650 Ft.
Water Temp.: 75 Degrees
Information : On Tuesday Capt. Paul did his first overnighter on the Bounty Hunter II. We are happy to report that the boat performed beyond our expectations. We arrived on the west wall of the Hudson in just under three hours with the Ron Werner charter and set up on the Troll going 2 for 4 on 60 lb. Yellowfin. The night chunk was slow until we received a call from Capt. Phil (Canyon Runner)that he was beating up on the Yellowfin in the Toms Canyon. We made the run to the Toms at 10PM in under an hour and arrived just as the bite was ending. We settled for another Yellowfin, a few pulled hooks and 1 large Mahi. The morning Troll was uneventful until we raised a Blue Marlin estimated at 200 to 300 lbs. The Blue gave us 4 spectacular leaps and after 15 minutes proceeded to break off after wrapping us up in Lobster gear.

Date Fished: 8/17-18/04
Location: Hudson
Fishing Method: troll/chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: juvinile
Bait or Lure: the works
Water Depth: 300-3,000 ft
Water Temp.: 71-75
Information : I had Matt Tribulski, John Cherry, Ralph Ford and Randy with me for an overnighter. I've never seen the ocean as flat as it was overnight . The lack of air movement was so amazing (cigarette smoke hung in the cockpit)..Trolled the west elbow to the 150/050 and south... very little life on the surface. chunked all night with fish under the boat... lots of them... not a touch. They really were lock-jawed as we tried all the tricks in the book. the morning troll took us to the 100 square all the way to the tip and the tower. We did manage to get 7 mahimahi in the boat plus a couple of 20 lb yellowfins and countless skippies.. There are definitely less fish every year in my opinion. I've seen people giving high fives over 3 and 4 fish trips... 5 years ago we would have been hanging our heads over that kind of a catch. I really hope I'm wrong ... looking forward to bountiful Sept/Oct.

Fishing Method: Trolling/chunking
Specie: Big-Eye Tuna
Size: 140 lb
Bait or Lure: Sprdr Bars/lures
Water Depth: 350-800 ft
Water Temp.: 76
Information : Capt Bernie Roth hosted the Rob Swartenberg charter from New City New York for a Tues/Wed overnighter in the canyons which they will long remember. Afternoon trolling in the Hudson Canyon was uneventful and hearing a good report from the Toms Canyon we moved there and chunked for the night with no action. Up on the troll in the morning the charter boated a 50lb yellowfin. Shortly thereafter four rods went off and the four man charter was wrestling with four bigeyes. Unfortunately one rod pulled the hook and a second rod became entangled with the other lines and broke off. Once the lines were cleared the charter brought the other two 140 lb fish to gaff after 45 minutes of give and take. This was the first time the charter had encountered bigeyes and they were awed by their brute strength and aching backs. With a rainstorm coming we headed for home with the three tuna on ice.

Location: Toms Canyon
Fishing Method: On the Chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 70-90 Pounds
Bait or Lure: Butters/Squid
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 80
Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie and mates Justin Nighan and Mike Zajac took the Bill Stevens charter from Bridgewater, NJ back out on a turn around overnighter and this time decided to head to the 73-80 degree break by the Toms Canyon. As soon as they hit the break they put a 70 pound yellowfin in the boat and later trolled what would have been the first place white in Cape May this week as they released a white-one easily around 80 pounds. With only a tuna and a white to our credit and about to set up for the night knowing that the chunking has yet to turn on we were worried. Just then a school of yellowfin busted the surface feeding on surface bait and instead of trolling through them we stopped the boat in front of them threw the meat and had 4 on. on the chunks while the lures were still out. For the next 1.5 hours we had 2 on at a time and end up boxed up and releasing by 9:30pm. All the fish were between 70-90 pounds and we had them on butters, squid and jigs. In total we ended up with 16 yellowfin, 1 longfin, the white and a mahi.

Spent the day in the Channels, even after the outgoing came through. Had to hold with 10 ounces but it was worth it. Several customers had limits with fish averaging 17 to 21 inches. Pool fish was 4 1/4 pounds. Some Sea Bass starting to show on the little snags now also...Please bring heavier rods to fish with. Light tackle with all the weight is a waste of time, unless the fish swallows the bait all the way down, you will miss 90% of them, so be prepaired. Thanks, Capt. Ron

Size: 45 to 70 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Artificials,Ballyhoo,Butterfish,Live Squid,etc.
Water Depth: 200 ft. to 500 fathoms
Water Temp.: 71 to 74.4 degrees
Information : To start with the NOAA weather was right on once again----- yeh sure! Headed for the Lindenkohl after a few conversations with a couple of other charter boats with the Tom Abode Charter from the Piscataway Police Dept. Started the troll about 12 noon on Sat. Went as far as the 500 line without a real knock down ( not counting the 12 or so Skippies we hooked up & released). After working that area for about 4 hrs. I decieded to troll north to the Carteret, stilll not producing anything but more Skippies. After working that for a while I headed for So.Toms where we put our first Longfin and 4 MahiMahi in the boat. Actually I happened to make the right move starting at the Lindy because the West wind , of which was "howling" was on my port stern all the way up! Stopped short of Toms Tip, about one mile. Anchored up in 629 ft. and began the chunk. Hooked up a Longfin 5 min's. into the chunk. The night bite produced only one MahiMahi. Few squid were present and the ones we managed to net were on the chunking hooks. Quit chunking right after first light and went on the troll heading for the Tip. Worked the "Jettisoned" Area for about one hr. putting 3 more MahiMahi in the boat.Started the troll "home" and got into the yellowfin about 9 miles from Toms Tip.The ride home was not pleasant with a strong West wind till we got 38 off , it flattened out and we finally could run or normal speed All in all setting the troll towards the barn saved the day and the charter went home with some meat! On board with me were Capt./ Mate Tom Walsh & Mate Tom Stehn!

Water Depth: 600

After 23 canyon trips so far this year we finally decided to give the Hudson Canyon a look over. We were not disappointed with the fishing but again the weather plagued us. Arriving at the West Wall in the middle of the afternoon we quickly got into a nice pick of smaller yellowfin (30-40 pounds) and bluefin and added a mahi. But the wind kept coming and by 7:30 pm we were struggling to get the anchor down in 8 footers. We ended up with 11 tuna on the troll with 6 yellowfin and 5 small bluefins that we released plus the mahi. There was no chunking bite and with only a 3 man charter who had all the fish they wanted we headed home at first light.

Location: Wilmington
Fishing Method: Troll
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 60
Bait or Lure: ballys
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 77
Information : The Canyon Runner crew left the 48’ Viking Canyon Runner in the slip and went down to the White Marlin Open in style on a 57’ Ricky Scarbourgh. Unfortunately the boat was the best thing about the tournament for us as both the weather and the fishing did not cooperate. We were able to get out on Monday and Thursday. Monday produced a nice mahi that we were going to weigh before a much nicer one was brought to the scales ahead of us. We also had a yellowfin. Thursday’s fishing was much better, that is if we were tuna fishing. We were trolling the northeast corner of the Wilmington and had tuna bites all day. Since we were strictly white marlin fishing we pulled the baits out of the water when the tuna came up and would have had a bunch on the spreader bars but since we were tournament fishing we cut the hooks out of the bars. We still got a show as the yellowfin would keep coming back and hit the bars again and again before either falling for a ballyhoo trolled alongside or just giving up. With one day left to fish we left the inlet Friday only to turn around 4 miles off the beach.

Information : Sorry for the missed reports but my computer got wacked by lightning! Anyway, Fluking had been very good until Thursday. The strong North and Northeast winds against the tide hasn't helped one bit. When we did find a drift it was 2.4 knots, very tough to troll for Fluke. Until that we had several limit catches and days were we landed up to 170 keepers! When the bite turned on it was like porgie fishing, straight up and down fishing. Hopefully things will get back to normal in a few days, the bay is pretty muddy also from all the rain runoff, so we need to get that straight also. Thanks, Capt. Ron

That was better, in the first few minutes had my best fish of the day about 3lbs. Continued catching fluke and the occassional Cape Shark, robin, skate, etc. Very few throwbacks. Ended the day with 16 fluke to 4lbs and one 3lb Seabass. All in all a great day on the water.....

Bait or Lure: Snappies, Belly, Squid, Speering
Water Depth: Up to 50 Ft.

Information : Excellent Captain, excellent boat, excellent Mates, excellent fishing. Fluking in the Raritan Bay area just may be making a comeback after all. Everybody caught fish, there were several limits, I had 7 keepers, many 15 to 16 inch throw-backs and numerous other shorts as well. The old timer next to me limited and released 20 + fish of various sizes. Fresh cut bait worked well for me. Live snappers actually worked best when cut length-wise (obviously no longer "live").
