Location: Bay and Ocean
Fishing Method: Trolling , Drifting

Bait or Lure:
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : A little late but it's been a tough weekend...
Thursday 8-28 we set out with the Matt Pleyn party and headed about 40 miles for a little trolling action... Beautiful ocean, blue clear water... but the temps dropped off. East of the Cayru down towards the cigar I couldn't get a temp above 72.5. All said and done we had a bunch of Skippies, 1 False Albacore, and the one that got away. A Stretch 25 trolled off the transon on a 50TW got whacked with a good fish... a few minutes later a dropped rod tip set him free. The fish was running line off the 50 in strike... Tuner, Wahoo, who knows....
On Saturday 8-30 we set out with the Art Ramos party for some Weakfish and Flukin' action. Left the dock at 6:00am to see if we could beat the boat traffic and put a couple pretty ones in the box. Hit all the favorite holes, but the Weakies are just not cooperating this year. Headed off into the ocean to get in on some of that great Flukin going on off LBI amid 3-4 footers A couple minutes into the drift put a 5lb'er in the box. That was enough for Art and he needed to get back to solid land. He forgot to bring the sea legs. Back to the dock at 9:30am.

E-Mail : karonaraft@cs.com
Boat Name: Benchmark
Date Fished:
Location: 100 fathom line
Fishing Method: trolling - chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 60 - 80 lbs.
Bait or Lure: ballyhoo - squid - butterfish
Water Depth: 600'
Water Temp.: EIGHTY
Information : RAFT did it's first overnighter on Benchmark with Capt. Nick Neuberg. Hearing reports of 15-20, we knew our trip would be a bumpy one. Travel time wasn't out of the ordinary. We trolled 2- 70lb. yellowfin in 5's, and the water clarity was super, but the temp was high, as noted, 80*. The night started slow with our first fish at 10pm. With a gradual increase in bait readings, things started to happen. At 11pm a steady pick of 60-80lb fish kept us busy. Mike McCarthy, our favorite squid jigger, kept us supplied with fresh bait, and Jack DosSantos, brought along some choice Portugese baits. Ron Jr. was happy catching fish on jigs, and Capt. Nick was flawless on the gaff. At 1am, our swordfish rig went off, and after 30 min of a hard battle with an unknown, and an 80 stand-up rod, appeared a monster blue shark well in excess of 300lbs. An hour after releasing the shark, a constant tuna bite occured. Counting our catch at 3:30, we needed 3 more fish to limit-out. At 4am our boxes were full, 24 yellowfin to 80 lbs. Re-composing ourselves and the cockpit, at 6am we headed back to Manasquan. For us, a very successfull trip to start off the season. Capt. Nick and Mate Greg were super in aiding us with every fish hooked and breaking only 1 to the props. Happy trails..... RAFT .....

Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-80 pounds
Bait or Lure: anything
Water Depth: 550
Water Temp.: 78
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Justin Nighan and Mike Zajac out did themselves Thursday night in the Hudson Canyon putting together their best trip of the year. Fishing with the Rob Scrivo charter from Bay Head, NJ they arrived at the West Wall at 7pm and anchored in 550 feet of water By 10pm they had 6 yellowfin in the boat and by 2 am they had a dozen without yet losing one fish. Thereafter it was a mad dog bite with the tuna hitting anything put in the water, including bare hooks. From 3am to 5am the charter caught another 26 tuna and lost only 2 bringing the total to an amazing 38 for 40. Not bad for only 6 guys fishing. It should be noted that out of the 38 tuna brought to the boat only 22 were kept and the hooks were removed from the other 16 released. To top it off, tonight’s fish were mostly 60 pounders with some 80 pounders mixed in.

Waiting for an early bite that didn’t come made the crew think that they should have went back down south but a flurry from 3am-5am changed that as the charter went 10 for 12 on 50-60 pound yellowfin. Up on the troll in the morning for only a couple of hours they went 1 for 2 putting a 70 pounder yellowfin in the boat. They anchored in 550 feet of water on the west wall and picked up most of the tuna on the chunk on squid.

Information : On Tuesday August 26 the South River Fluke Fishing Team chartered the Misty Morn for a day on the bay. We filled the boat fore to aft and set out to the Ambrose channel. We had a nice long first drift and lots of fluke (keepers) and skates came aboard. Mother nature stepped in and change our drifting pattern and things slowed down. The weather was great, Capt. Sean Bouchard did a fine job of trying to keep us on the fish as we worked our way back toward the dock. The pool winners were Bill Schmidt with the heaviest fluke, Bob Borowinski most keepers and Tom Figlo with largest Robin. The entire group returned to the South River Pub for a debriefing and pizza. A good time was had by all. Thanks Capt. Sean.

Information : The Canyon Runner was back offshore Sunday to Monday with the Dr. Bernie Jay charter from Mantaloking, NJ/Connecticut and headed south to try out a couple of the smaller canyons that were productive during the Mid-Atlantic Tournament. Unfortunately trolling was a bust and we anchored-up early as the night bite was good the day before. Tonight was not so hot with half of the 10 boats in the canyon striking out. We did manage to go 3 for 5 on 50 pound yellowfin and saved the trip with another swordfish (this one close to 100 pounds). Bait or Lure: Butterfish/Squid
Water Depth: 365 ft
Water Temp.: 77
Information :
Capt Bernie Roth hosted the Mark Bennett charter for an overnighter in the Lindenkohl Canyon on Sunday and Monday. The afternoon troll produced nothing but skippies and we set up for the night chunk early at 6 pm. At 11 pm the charter hooked a swordfish and the hook pulled at boatside. Shortly thereafter the charter began getting hookups with yellowfins with squid baits. By first light they boated six yellowfins to 60 lbs and lost as many primarily with the hooks pulling shortly after hookup. The morning troll was uneventful and we headed home at 9am with six yellowfins on ice.

With the help of the EL-Maria from Little Egg as there was only 3 boats there for the Evening. As soon as we settled in for the evening, the wind picked up to 25 knots. By 10 p.m, the winds were gusting to 35 knots with 8-10 ft seas. During the coarse of the night, we went 3 for 4 on Yellowfin Tuna up to 60 lbs. As soon as day light came we headed back in the 8-10 ft seas,as it was a 7 hour ride home as we were only able to do 10 knots for the first 50 miles. The weather men were wrong once again.

Location: Sandy Hook, Shrewsbury rocks
Fishing Method: killie/squid
Specie: Fluke
Size: fluke to 19", seabass to 14"
Bait or Lure: killie/squid
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Came out of the highlands to find the northwest winds had made a mess out of the bay, blowing much higher than the forecasted 5-10mph. Current conditions were blowing 14kts gusting to 17...
We ran up to old orchard light to try and catch shelter from the wind, but it produced not a hit. We decided to make the run to outside the hook, and along the way the wind died down to the forecasted speed. Rounding the hook produced a calm ocean of near bath-tub quality. I ran the boat down to the shrewsbury rocks and set up for fluking at about 35ft of water. We were immediately into short fluke and seabass. As the water got deeper the fluke got bigger. Ended up with 6 keeper fluke to 19" and 5 keeper seabass to 14". I only wish I had more time to fish to catch some more of those delicious seabass.

Action this week for the troll bite was up on the northwest bank of the Lindy in 300 ft. We live baited a 400lb. blue which sucked down a whole skippy. The rest of the morning troll went 1 for two on Yellowfins and one for three on whites. All in all a great trip.

Location: offshore
Fishing Method: troll
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 25-45
Bait or Lure: bally and green machines
Water Depth: 200-1000
Water Temp.: 77-78
Information : Fished with Capt Bob Beideman on the new 38 Foot Fishtrap. Although the old Fish Trap was a great sea boat with tuna catching abilities, the new 38 is a big stable boat that gave us a good platform in the less than hospitable seas. Starting inshore looking for blue fin Tuna based on some recent reports we trolled first light and live baited a few fish that we saw on the scope. No takers so we decided to head to deeper waters. The the captain and crew did a great job going 9 for 10 on the troll. Steve never asked for the belt. Mike never allowed any slack. Tim showed his expeirence whipping two of the nine in short order. And Paul the least seasoned angler was allowed to take three of the nine fish up to 45 lbs. Tom, lets just saw he had one of the ten on his line. It was a nice steady pic and the Captain and mate steve did a great job finding the fish and staying on them and getting them to eat when it seemed so many had been reporting lockjaw. It was also nice to see Steve the mate and marine biologist, not steve the angler get get as pumped after ever fish. All and all we felt blessed to be on the fish trap.

Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-50 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Green Machine/ Ballys- Butters/ Sardines
Water Depth: 300' - 1500'
Water Temp.: 77-78
Information : Trolling into the canyon late afternoon into the east wall proved somewhat eventfull after putting two yellows in the box before setting up on the chunk. We put nothing in the box on the chunk and had lots of life around the boat (chicken dolphin, squid, and some small mako and blue sharks around the boat)....BUT...the higlight of the night was when the downrigger dropped at nearly 200' went off and after fighting this estimated 175-200 lb. swordfish for 20 minutes, he was able to chaffe through the 80 lb mono and break our crew's hearts. We had the top of the leader close to the surface twice but just unable to grab it in time to get a few gaffs in 'em. Anyway, the morning troll produced a double header and us going 1 for 2 on the morning troll. Kind of a tough trip regarding both the fishing and the weather. Where was that 1-3' marine forecast they predicted for Thurs?? By the way, great crew out there. They fished their hearts out the entire time.

Water Depth: 112 ft
Water Temp.: 77.3
Information : We went out for a ˝ day stint with the tourist group of Jack, Jody, and Barbara all first time fisher people. Lou fu and I knew we would have a job to satisfy our patrons. We arrived a 17 fathoms at 1 pm to find 4 head boats and 2 other locals. We marked many pods of Bluefish and stopped south of the boats established line. This allowed our chum to drift through the numerous lobster pots found at 17. The lay was perfect. As we anchored Jack shouted he saw something in the water. I shrugged it off as flotsam. It took ˝ hour for the first bite of a gorilla. After many brake offs and tangles with hot poles sitting in pole holders we discovered that 2 Bull Mahhe Mahhe were sitting under the boat ever since Jack’s sighting (listen to your passengers). We attempted to catch some exotics with no success. We kept 9 blues ranging from 6 to 12 lbs and learned that 17 fathoms is a great place to fish. Actually in retrospect live small bait would have helped us. So be prepared. You never know.

The charter had a blast boating 37 before they disappeared. The night chunk was uneventful till 4 am when we had a flurry of bites, boating 3 out of four yellowfins hooked. Information : Arrived at the Lindy at about 7 PM and observed ugly green water and bath water surface temps. There was only one YFT reported being taken that evening on the troll, so we set up to chunk in the area. All night long, fewest squid I've ever seen and we were only able to net one! Not hits, runs or errors all night until about 2:30 AM when we decided to get moving inshore about 20 miles to try to change our luck, which didn't. Nobody was catching so in the morning we picked the pots of about 30 chick mahi up to 6 lbs. because pizza for dinner wasn't sounding good. For me this trip was my first and last chunking trip of the season because I head out to Iowa for school tomorrow, the boat will be missed.

Arriving late at the southwest corner of the Hudson Canyon and going right to the chunk produced a slow night with only a couple yellowfin hook with 2 lost and 1 boated. The night was saved when an nice swordfish was decked after a brief fight. In the morning all we were able to pull was a longfin on the troll and nothing else.

Hooked and lost a nice white marlin, boated a number of Mahi, and tangled with literally about 70 skipjack tuna including several caught on the flyrod (makes those pests worth it). Water Depth: 75'
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Headed out of the Manasquan to do some sea bass fishing at 7:30 am. We headed straight for the Axel Carlson Reef for a Tanker Barge (The Jim Lynch) There were a few boats in the area drifting. We found the wreck right away and tossed the marker. Now the fun started. It took a couple of tries to back off the marker, drop anchor, and drift over the wreck but we got it, on the 3rd try. In 2 hours, we caught 15 sea bass to 4 1/2 lbs. We tossed back everything under 15". Best 2 hours I have spent so far this summer. The other boats in the area started moving in, once they saw us pulling up some fish. We decided to pull up anchor and drift the area for fluke As soon as we started drifting, a boat pulled up within 20 feet of our marker and was getting ready to drop anchor. After a few polite words back and forth, the other boat sped off to unknown parts. Hey, buy a decent fish finder, spend a few bucks on a book that gives you GPS and Loran numbers for over 100 wrecks on the Jersey coast, and stop bugging the party boats and boats that have the right equipment to find fish.

Specie: Big-Eye Tuna

Bait or Lure: Squid
Water Depth: 500
Water Temp.: 78
Information : An interesting trip to the Hudson was put together last night by Capt. Phil Dulanie and Mike Zajac on the Canyon Runner. Fishing with the Joe Kay charter from Flemington Department Stores we set up on the chunk early on the exact spot where we had 27 the night before. However, Monday night never saw the big schools of yellowfin show up for any of the 7+ boats in the canyon and the only ones we know of our the 3 fifty pounders we boated. The trip was made by a tuna of a somewhat different species. The first took a bait at 100 feet and was fought for 20 minutes and weighed in at 150 pounds. The second came an hour later fought for 20 minutes and pushed the scale to 160 pounds. Both were the first bigeyes we boated this year. The night was not done with only 5 tuna as at 5:30am we hooked a very large fish. 3 hours later the 250+ pound swordfish was only 30 feet from the gaff when the 60 pound leader parted - tough luck but a hell of an experience for the guys.

Information : Had the Mark Bendul party from the Bergen County prosecuters office out for an overnighter. Trolling the hudson from the tip to elbow produced 4 mahi and 10 skipjacks. Setting up on the chunk however produced yellowfins as soon as it got dark. Bite was steady all night long, interupted only by a 2 hour battle with a very big tuna which finally pulled the hook 60' from the boat. Picked a few more fish after that for a total of 17, 40-70lb yellowfin in the box, and another 10 fish hooked and lost. Diamond jigs and squid worked the best.

Information : Due to a gasket failure on one engine Thursday we missed the crowds on Thursday night and Friday night waiting for the part to be shipped but were back out for a Sunday-Monday overnigther with only a few boats for company. And with the crowd out of the canyon almost every boat left in the Hudson did very well last night. Captain Phil Dulanie and Mike Zajac were no exception as they had their best night of the year so far. Anchoring up on the West Wall a 8pm they quickly put 3 yellowfin in the boat in the first hour for the Todd Polumbo charter from Fair Haven, NJ but then had to wait for the fish to really turn on. Once they did it was non-stop action as the 6 man charter and 3 man crew boat their limit of 27 yellowfin out of 35 bites. From 11:30 pm until 1:30pm they had at least two fish on at once and several triple headers and were on their way home by 2am. By 6:30am they pulled in the slip and began the long process of quartering the predominately 50-60 pound yellowfin for the dinner table and the freezer. Live squid caught prior to the bite getting hot were the bait of choice.

Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 35-40 pounds
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 720-1000 feet
Water Temp.: 77.4 (New Guage/Thanks Dad)
Information : With a break in the weather, the "First Light" and crew, finally got an opportunity to run offshore. We weren't at all surprised when greeted by a never ending line of nav lights signifying a huge 100 plus fleet on the walls including boats in the 20 foot range. Our crew consisted of our usual canyon rats; Capt. Sean, brothers Jeff and George, My son Chris, and myself. We had our first fish in the boat by just after midnight, a yellowfin under 40 pounds. We had anchored in 720 feet, but caught that fish in 1000 feet of water since the anchor slipped. We decided to pull her up and just drift along the West Wall on the 600 foot line to the elbow. The night stayed quiet with only a few hits and by dawn we knew that the main schools were probably small or scattered by the weeks of bad weather, and that the main body were probably concentrated near those guys that were set up early. The best bet right now is to troll the afternoon and get set up on anchor well before everybody else. This will allow the schools to find your baits and establish themselves for the night feed near your lines. Keep the chunk heavy until the first knockdown then you can go lighter to keep them interested in the chunks with hooks in them. Also go light as possible on the fluro with small hooks. The fish are in the 40 to 60 pound range primarily in super clean water and they are line shy. We had large dorado by the boat all morning and they wouldn't go near anything we threw at them but the chunks without the hooks. The morning troll produced skipjack and smaller dolphin. There are also huge schools of baby bluefin everywhere, but were not interested in our trolling set up at all. Capt. Sean kept changing the pattern, but pretty much to no avail. We trolled the tip to the tower, had one more skippy, and then called it a day. The ride back was perfect with a flat ocean that allowed us to open up the Bertram and enjoy all the good preseason maintenance Dad Carton had spoiled her with. The new and very much needed temp gauge worked perfectly. The water was in the high 70s but I have noticed that its a bit warmer on the East side by the charts. Keeping an eye on current, drift, and temperatures should guide your choice on which wall to fish. There wasn't a lot of bait in the water nor did we see other forms of Gulstream life like dolphins and whales.

On the run in, stopped on a large school of bunker, while we were maneuvering to cast a net on them, a 10-15 lb dolphin swam all around the boat several times, threw everything at it, but could not get it to bite. Squid appeared to be the bait of preference and the charter went 11 for15 on 40-60 pound yellowfin before the clock struck 2am. Even so, party had a good time, although a long run both ways. Spotty pea soup on the way back, but seas were flat.

Location: Hudson
Fishing Method: overnight
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 45-55
Bait or Lure: butters
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 77
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Mike Zajac put together a limit catch of yellowfin Tuesday night for the Keith Londress charter from Little Silver, NJ. Reaching the edge late Tuesday afternoon we only had about an hour and a half on the troll and only managed one fish that was quickly lost. We initially set up on the east wall but not seeing what we wanted we pulled the hook and moved back over to the west wall and had fish on shortly after coming tight on the anchor. From 10pm to 2:30am the charter had the pleasure of fighting 18 yellowfin and boxing 12 of them from 45-55 pounds. We did not have another touch after 2:30am but with a limit in the box we pulled the anchor at first light and never put a trolling line in the water getting back to the dock early. Butterfish so far are the bait of choice as there is not a big concentration of bait in the area.

Location: Hudson Canyon

Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-60
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 600 Feet
Water Temp.: 77
Information : It is nice to back up north where the tuna are!! Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Mike Zajac and Jay Richardella took the Mark Francis charter from Connecticutt out on the Canyon Runner for an overnighter Monday to Tuesday and put together a nice catch all on the chunk. Trolling in the afternoon did not produce as we hooked only 1 yellowfin losing him at the boat. However, once we set up on the chunk it was not long before the rods started bending. Setting up in 600 feet of water on the West Wall of the Hudson we immediately had bait around the boat (although not vast quantities) and within 20 minutes the first yellowfin hit the deck. It was a steady pick all night long only interrupted when the sharks invaded the slick and we ended up releasing both a 200-pound hammerhead and a small brown shark. We finished off with a quick barrage at dawn and ended the trip going 9 for 15 on 40-70 pound yellowfin all on the chunk. Rough seas and charter exhaustion lead to many of the lost fish being broke off right next to the boat.

Date Fished: August 4-8
Location: Wilmington
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: White Marlin
Size: 61 Inches
Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 240 Feet
Water Temp.: 77
Information : The Canyon Runner is back on line after a week off for the White Marlin Open. As is usual for that tournament it was another major turnout by 400 boats and thousands of spectators. Totally not within the control of the tournament committee was the fact that the marlin decided to take the year off. Man does fishing stink down south this year.
On the first two days the only white we saw was one released from another boat. We were fishing between the Baltimore and Wilmington both days out to the 500 Fathoms of the Wilmington and only got a couple yellowfin and a bunch of mahi – the tuna and marlin are just not there.
On our third day of fishing, however, we found the whites. Although fishing in 6-9 foot seas all day put a crimp in our efforts to get these fish to the boat. Trolling a few miles due north of the Tip of the Wilmington we found perfect water deep blue in color with bait and stop the boat way short of our intended destination which was the Spencer. Within 10 minutes of lines in a white got wrapped up in our teaser and was spooked but marked the first of 7 whites we saw that day. We actually had a ligit shot at 5 whites hooking 3. All three were solid hook-ups but with waves crashing in the cockpit it made it quite tough fighting these fish and 2 jumped off (both small anyway). We did boat and release one that was only 61 inches.
Needless to say we are thrilled to be back up north where the tuna have been since late June and are already back offshore today with reports that the yellowfin have started to bite on the chunk.

Water Depth: 70 - 75 ft

Information : After withstanding a nasty run out the Barnegat Inlet (thank God for catermarans)arrived at the HC lump by 5:45 a.m. Gave it about 1 hour there and after no action decided to move out to the reef. 1st drift produced a the nicest sea bass I have seen in awhile (6 lbs) and 2 mats. Drifted same spot 2nd time and absolutely nothing. We kept at it all day and it was a pretty slow pick but ended up with 8 beautiful fluke and 6 really nice sea bass with a lot of shorts and junk in between. SWT between 67-69 degrees. I think the bite will really turn on once this weather changes.

Bait or Lure: Squid Killie Combo
Water Depth: 40

Information : We started off in the morning fishing shallow and had a few hook-ups with 1 keeper. We then headed out into deeper water around 11:00. It was so hot and humid and there were no swells. About 12:30 the wind picked up and gave us a good drift. We started really hitting the keeper sized fluke good. Put another 4 in the box. We also had a fluke that was bit in half by a shark on the retrieve. I've never seen that before. Pretty scary if you think about it. We were only 100 yards from surf fishermen.

There was also a lot of white marlin caught there and some bigeyes. The place to be was at the Hudson where the troll was hot.
