Bait or Lure: Fluke Belly/ Spearing
Water Depth: Deep
Water Temp.: 74
Information : Hit the afternoon bite with Capt. Rich and his boys. Had a good time fishing and laughing. The fluke were beautiful and we got a decent catch. The croakers were big and a real pain on the ass, as were the blues. There were 2 guys fishing close by. They drove past and we clued them in on the bait and location. They fished with us most of the afternoon and we saw them with bent poles a few times. When we left ,they gave us a thumbsup and we felt good about helping fellow anglers catch some nice fish. On the way in we heard some assholes bragging about the 22inch fish they put in the box. This is common chatter on channel 65 but stop and think for a minet . Who is listening in on the radio? The draggers with a Sitex RDF who lock in on the location and turn up to sweep the area clean. Did you ever ask how the Midatlantic Fisheries determine how much fish the recreational fishermen catch each year? They lisen in too and determine how well we are doing and next year, come out with rediculous size and catch limits. My friends brag about their catch too, but we eat what we catch. If you want to let a friend know how you are doing or let him in on your location, call him on a cell phone. Loose lips screw us all.

Bait or Lure: squid, killies,spearing
Water Depth: 50 to 70'

Information : The South River Pub fluke fishing team (29 people) chartered the Misty Morn out of Morgan for our late summer trip. Capt. Mike took us to the Reach Channel near the ammo pier, the ammo pier channel, Chapel Hill channel and Sandy Hook channel at the tip of the hook. The weather was great but there did not seem to be a good drift on either incoming or outgoing tides. Both mates were helpful with tangles, bait and other assistance. The only problem was that we must have caught 200 shorts with few keepers. Glenn won the pool with a fluke about 3 lbs. and Ed won high hook with 5 keepers. Most people went home without a fish dinner but all aboard had a great time and Im sure we will all be back for another try. P.S. I was glad to see Capt. Gary and Claire at the dock greeting us upon our return. He seems to be feeling a lot better.

Angler Name : Mark Charlton
E-Mail : mchar@mindspring.com
Boat Name:
Date Fished: 8/25, 26
Location: Barnegat light jetty
Fishing Method: Fish fing\der riges; somewhat before dead low tide; 4 oz. pyramid on a fish finder; 5/0 Mustad hook.
Specie: Black Drum
Size: 40+
Bait or Lure: Fresh bunker
Water Depth: ?
Water Temp.: ?
Information : Righ off the Barnegat jetty, Mr. Fish took the bait and steadily ran with it. My brother, Steve, had 25 lb. test and a nice Penn reel/rod combo. The fish was taking line, bending the rod, and Steve was smiling. 30 minutes later, he was tired. "Wanna take the rod?". "Nope." I'm not fighting HIS monster. 20 more minutes. "He's still taking line AT WILL". And he was. Peeling off 10 yards at a time. No dummy, he. Mr. Drum knows the longer he's on, the more likely he'll be gone. Fighting up and down the jetty, the inevitable occurs: Steve wraps around a rock. 15 minutes elapse. I'm disgusted. I'm ready to swim around the rock with the pole in my teeth, and it's not even my fish. Miraculously, the fish gets free of the rock. The fight continues, and the drum begins to cruise away into the inlet again. Wanting to slow the flight, my brother palms the spool, and snaps off the fish of his life. The line end is frayed severely for 4 feet or so. There's no moral to this story. When Steve realized his plight upon hookup he said "I don't want to waste an hour on this fish, only to snap off!" How right he was. You can't expect to grab some 60 lb. Drum off the jetty, can you? Can you? You Betcha! RIG UP!

Angler Name : John Labash

After starting the morning troll with a 5 bagger hookup of larger than normal longfin, the charter went 14 for 17 on longfin, including a second 5 bagger hookup, in less than three hours. Angler Name : Dr. Jay
E-Mail : njcharter@aol.com
Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: August 25-26
Location: Hudson
Fishing Method: Overnignter
Specie: Albacore Tuna
Size: 35-55 pounds
Bait or Lure: Bars/Baits/Jets
Water Depth: 800
Water Temp.: 78
Information : In the inmortal words of Ella Fitzgerald - "At Last!!!!!" the Hudson Canyon has turned on. Capt. Phil Dulaine and mates Mike Zajac and Jay Richardella took the Dr. Bernie Jay charter from Greenwich, Conn. out to the Hudson Canyon on Sunday for an overnighter to Monday and found the longfin everywhere. Trolling in the afternoon we went 8 for 14 on 40-50 pound longfin and caught a bunch of mahi. The night chunking was slow all around and we choose to get up on the troll early and had the riggers down and baits in the water by 4:30am. The decision paid off as we spent all morning with 5, 6 and 7 longfin hook-up at time and probably fought over 45 tuna on the troll. All the longfin were in the 40-60 pound class and when the dust settled and the boxes were full we had 35 longfin to our credit with many released. Everything we put in the water got eaten but Mamba Bars and Jets were the most successful.

Bait or Lure: minnows & squid
Water Depth: 45'-50'
Water Temp.: 69 degrees
Information : Pounded out of Beach Haven Inlet into a nasty 3'-5' chop followed by a darkening sky, that lightened, but the wind never slowed. Drifted in the swells in 45 feet of water about 3 miles off the south end of LBI. Caught 7 nice keeper fluke and about 8-10 throwbacks. Some of the biggest sea robins of the season keps things interesting as well as the "white horses" that occassionally slapped their way over the gunnel of the 25' mako I was fishing in. Took 4 or 5 drifts before packing it in and thanks to the couple of large white caps that broke over the bow while running back to take another drift, we did not need to wash the boat when we got home.

I don't know why anyone tries to bottom fish in these inlets. All they end up doing is dredging seaweed. A sluggo or fin s will catch fluke (caught 12 this am), blues, weakies and even a shark or two. Bonus - no seaweed. Trick is using 3/8 oz weight or less to keep from dragging bottom. Fishing Method: Troll
Specie: Wahoo
Size: 55 lbs.
Bait or Lure: purple jet head
Water Depth: 400
Water Temp.: 72
Information : Finally got the 26 ft. "Reel Adventure" out to the canyons. We had no knockdowns all morning until we got lucky and hooked into Mr. Wahoo around 12:30. Luckily he didn't bite through our 50 lb. mono leader and we were able to boat him. The nice wahoo made the trip. On the way home we spotted a 2 x 6 floating and picked up 6 nice gaffer dolphin but could have had more. Word to the wise: never throw away your bait until you get to the dock.

Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Overnigter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-90 pound
Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 100 Fathoms
Water Temp.: 78
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Mike Zajac and Jay Richardella had the ken Gorsuch charter from Manhattan out on the Canyon Runner and for a quick turn around trip Saturday - Sunday and scratched out together another decent catch despite the fact that the canyons are not exactly teeming with tuna. Arriving in the afternoon we picked a couple longfin before putting it on the drift and had life in the slick. However, a couple of long-liners dropped their gear on us and we were forced to move only putting one yellowfin and releasing a small Manta Ray during the night. Up on the troll in the morning we had a couple of shots at fish releasing some small ones and keeping a few more and a mahi for a catch of 6 tuna that we worked out butts off for. I hope the fishing improves but it does not look like it is going to get much better than this unless something dramtic happens.

Had our first fish on at 9:30 which hit our swordfish rig and acted very much like a sword. It turned out to be a 300 lb. plus mataray. About two minutes after releasing the ray we had a huge nock down from a very large yellowfin. We broke the fish off and a few minutes later hooked and boated a 50 pounder. The drift than started to go bad and so did the fishing. Nothing after that point and nothing in the morning on the troll.

The charter went 6 for 15 on Yellowfin keeping only legal sized fish while releasing the rest. Coming back up on the Bank we went 2 for 4 on 50 Lb. Longfin. Mako Jets, Tuna Clones & Rigged Balyhoo worked for us today.

Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 30 lbs
Bait or Lure: Various
Water Depth: 400-1300
Water Temp.: 72
Information : 72 degree, green water and 451 ft coming off the west wall of Tom's Canyon produced our only action. Trolling for 8 hours we were 2 for 2 on rat yellowfins. Fish 1 hit a small squid spreader bar with blue skirts and the other fish hit a chartreuse and green cedar swimmer. Both came at the same time in 450 ft of water. Capt. Rhino marked fish, but temps had dropped and the best water we could find was still very green. We did have the pleasure of being joined some 75 miles offshore by a homing pigeon (apparantly lost) who sat on the dash of the GW in front of the fan until we went back to dock and he split, going home I guess. 2 small yft doesn't really make the canyon fishing trip worth it, hope things pick up. See you out there. GonZo.

Fishing Method: Troll
Specie: Blue Marlin
Size: 400+
Bait or Lure: Plastics and Bally
Water Depth: 280
Water Temp.: 79.5
Information : Left the dock around midnight and headed for the Wilmy, the sea's were alot rougher then predicted, along with the heavier winds. The new areas covered by the NOAA "Hudson to Baltimore" seem to confuse the reporting. In the 28 ft center console we were able to run 17-18 kts with only an occasional drop off the back sides of the wave. Arriveing about 4:30 we began to troll in the dark. Staying on the deep side of the chunkers "20" we had no hits from dark to 10am. At 10 am west of the tip we hooked into a 400+ lb blue marlin. Before being spooled (50 VSW) the drag we increased and the hook bent and pulled. Had a few real nice jumps from the fish, beautiful fish. May give up on trolling tuna this year and keep the big stuff in the water. Also time to rerig all bally rigs with heavier hooks as the canyon runner reports in the big game fishing journal. Another example on how the pros do things for a reason. That was the only pull all day!! Where are the tuna, albies? the big eye. Tough season!!!

Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo/Sprdr Bars/Lures
Water Depth: 600ft
Water Temp.: 77-79 degrees
Information : Capt Bernie Roth had the Mark Bennett party on an overnight trip to the Hudson Canyon. The afternoon troll produced a small yellowfin which was released. We encountered massive bait readings with whales and porpoises on the 190 091 line and decided to set up there for the night chunking. The squid were so thick through the night that chunks never penetrated below them. We boated a 60lb yellowfin on a live squid and had two unknown runoffs that almost spooled the 50tws before breaking the 60lb leaders. The morning troll was uneventful in the very green water despite the fact that we constantly marked fish and bait. The fish are there and all we need is clean water to be more productive.

Water Depth: 500 Fathoms

Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mate Jay Richardella had the Joe Kay charter from Flemington, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Wednesday to Thursday for another overnighter. Fishing the Hudson in 3-6 foot seas with an occansional 8 footer was not what the weatherman called for but was fishable. Anchored up on the West Wall we pulled 2 Makos. One we released and the other tip the scales at 120. Nothing in the dark on the tuna however just before we were to pull the anchor the last rod out went off and we quickly went 2 for 3 on 90 pound yellowfin at 6:30am. Up on the troll we added another big yellowfin and fought our way home in solid 8 footers. Luckily for this trip we had an experience and harden charter that handled the conditions with no problem.

Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: The Big Zilch
Bait or Lure: ballys/ butters/ spreaders
Water Depth: 600-3000
Water Temp.: 78
Information : Well as the Canyon Runner reported, the weatherman blew the forecast big, and I do mean blow and blow and blow and at 20-25 knots most of the time. We decided to press on after 35 miles off and we made a big mistake. Nothing on the troll in the evening and the chunk was non-existant. We found no good temp. breaks and the water clarity was horrible in the Spencer but much better in the Lindenkohl. We managed to hook up a mahi and White Marlin while trolling up to the Lindy in the morning...but the hook pulled after a minute or so on the White..I guess par for the course. Good crew that were die hard fisherman and fished hard for 24 hrs. What a *** kickin' we took, thanks goes out to our new boat for its 14.5' beam that trudged through the seas nice at 22 knots on the way home. Think I'll wait till the tuna really move in until I head back out...been very hit or miss (mostly miss).

Ran over to the east in and found more life and better water. On the chuck over night we had one run off until early am when all hell broke lose, almost every drop down seemed to produce a fish, would up with 8 in the boat before daybreak then trolled past 100 sq and picked up 6 more in the 60+ range before realizing we needed to head back. It was another slow start but as we got the fish going it turned into non stop action. The charter put 60 Blues in the box between 2 & 5 lbs. and as on our trip Sunday the 12 Lb. tackle got a workout. Only Bunker & Butterfish baits produced fish. Ava Jigs did not catch a fish today.

Water Temp.: 78
Information : We fished with the Gene and Joe party in the willmington. Chunked from 3:00 to 5:00 am without a touch so we went up on the troll looking for the supposed long fin bite but we couldnt find it. Instead we released about a dozen footballs and nothing else. Time to go on the chunk.

Location: Hudson
Fishing Method: Overnignter
Specie: Blue Marlin
Size: 400+
Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 72
Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie and mates Mike Zajac and Jay Richardella had the Mark Habel charter out on the Canyon Runner Monday to Tuesday and decided they had enough with the Tuna and went for the man in the Blue Suit this time. Just kidding. Any way, we made our first trip to the Hudson Canyon this year (as we have been fishing 95-110 miles in every other direction this year) and put one longfin in the boat on the afternoon troll, one longfin on the chunk and one on the morning troll plus a small yellowfin. However, at 10am we raised two 400+ pound Blue Marlin to the pattern and hooked both at the same time - Big Mistake. One took off towards the bow tail walking the entire time it dump half a 50W International, one went straight back and down also dumping half a 50W. The decision on which one to chase was made for us as the fish on the bow was going nuts and finally wrapped in the leader and broke-off. An hour and half later the Blue Marlin off the transome was brought along side pictures taken and as we went to pull the hook out we broke it off. This one was about 450 pounds and swam off just fine.

Saw a lot of porpoise and bait out in 500Fathoms and set up there. Tons of squid and needlefish again, and once again no bites. Ran back to 100fathoms at 0200 and chunked 2 yellowfin and a small mako just before daybreak. Morning troll was uneventful.

Location: Ambrose Channel
Fishing Method: drift
Specie: Fluke

Bait or Lure: fluke belly killie combo
Water Depth: 40-50 ft.
Water Temp.:
Information : We caught 10 fluke. One weighed 6.4lb. Had 3 around 3 lbs. Lost a fish weighing around 12lbs. while netting. Fish was too big for net and jumped out and spit the hook. At noon, when the tide changed, the fishing stopped. I battled a 7-8 ft. long Thresher shark for over 25 min on 12lb. test. After 3 near spoolings, and 4 long runs, we had the fish at boat side 2 times. It broke off the second time when it dove under the boat. It was spectacular to watch as it leaped about 10-12 times clear of the air while hooked. It jumped twice while only about 10 ft off the boat.

Headed back up to the area around The Dip we had a nice bite on the troll Sunday afternoon. Longfin hit the baits and the bars and 7 hit the deck before we set up to chunk. Chunking, unlike the trip before, was unproductive despite the squid and porpoises around the boat all night. Up on the troll in the morning for a quick 2 hours put 2 more longfin in the boat. Water Depth: about 20 feet

Information : Captain Jim landed a big beautiful 8 lb weakfish on a big chunk of bunker while fishing for blues (we were not in the tournament). I didn't even know that weaks took bunker - but this one did - maybe that's how he got so big! With the balence of the day, we put together a nice catch of cocktail blues (some on crankbaits around working birds), fluke (1 legal, several shorts), several sea robins, dog fish, and large skates on squid/spearing hi-lo's and bunker. We also snagged a porgie that got bit in half before landing it. Additionally, something real big followed a short fluke all the way to to the boat, but turned and lumbered off as it was picked from the water! All fish were released and swam off healthy. Angler Name : Phil Motyka

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: August 9-10
Location: East of 100 Square
Fishing Method: Overnignter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-70
Bait or Lure: Bars/Baits/Jets
Water Depth: 800
Water Temp.: 72
Information : Capt. Phil Dulanie and mates Jay, Mike and Adam had the Phil Motyka charter from Birlington, NJ out on the Canyon Runner Friday to Saturday and limited out on yellowfin from 40-70 pounds. Arriving east of the 100 Square at 7pm we trolled into the dark and put 1 longfin and 1 yellowfin in the boat and marked plenty of bait. We set up on the drift in a slick calm ocean and immediately had hundreds of 6-inch squid around the boat. Nothing happened until midnight when Mike Zajac nailed a 120 pound Mako on the swordfish rig. Then the party started soon after as we were catching yellowfin on jigs and bait from 1am to 4am putting 14 in boat. Up on the troll in the morning we got the last line in the clip and had 2 on. In just 75 minutes of trolling we put another 12 tuna in the boat releasing 5 50+ pound fish as we had no more room. We left them biting.

Information : Heard some mixed reports from the Hudson but decided to try our luck anyway. Trolled up two small yellowfin in the evening just south of the 100 square. Set up chunk in the same area. Lost one lareg fish on the chunk, otherwise it was an uneventful night. Picked up two more on the morning troll. It seems like the chunk is pretty hit or miss right now. Most seemed to catch a few fish on the morning troll however.

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: August 8-9
Location: Spencer Canyon
Fishing Method: Overnignter
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: up to 90 pounds
Bait or Lure: Bars/Baits/Jets
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 78
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Jay Richardella and Mike Zajac had the Kevin Corradino charter from Brick, NJ down to the Spencer Canyon for a Thursday/Friday overnighter. Starting out on the troll we picked a couple mahi-mahi but only 1 tuna. However, setting up on the chunk we had small yellowfin under the boat all night and could have caught as many as we wanted. But who wants 20 pound yellowfin when you can catch 80 pounders - and we did. It took until 4am but the bigger fish moved in and we put 4 60-80 pounders in boat in an hour. Then up on the troll in the morning we quickly put 5 more in the boat to end the day with 9 yellowfin.
