put our gear to the test and the charter put 9 yellowfin between 90-110 pounds in the boat. In
addition, we chunked another 8 longfin. Several other big yellowfin were broke off and a couple were

Date Fished: 8/31/01
Location: Off LBI
Fishing Method: Drift Fishing
Specie: Fluke
Size: 17-26 inch
Bait or Lure: spearing, fluke belly, squid, minnows
Water Depth: 55-60ft.
Water Temp.: 72.7
Information : Went fishing for fluke for the 5th time this month off LBI on Friday August 31st. Results
were typical of our results for the past month. Our limit of fluke was had again. This was our best trip
yet though, we threw back all fish under 16 inch and cut up 4 17 inchers up for bait keeping the
carcasses and including them as keepers. Fished from 7 am till 11:30 am in 55-60 ft. of water just
inside the 3 mile line off the water towers of southern LBI. Between 4 of us, we had our limit of 17-26
inch fluke with 4 of them over 5 lbs. We gave our remaining bait to a boat near by and called it a day.
We gave all the fluke belly ribbons we cut while filleting our catch to my buddy's parents and they went
there the next day and got their limit within a couple of hours, all nice fish with 5 over 5 lbs. The
ribbons, cut real long and spiced up with a couple spearing is the best bait by far. Catch em up, there
is still a week left in state waters.

Angler Name : Ron Antonelli - RAFT-
E-Mail : karonaraft@cs.com
Boat Name: karona
Date Fished: 8 - 30 - 01 thurs
Location: Manasquan Ridge - north + south
Fishing Method: drifting
Specie: Fluke
Size: 3 - 5 lbs.
Bait or Lure: ex-lg squid ex-lg spearing robin strips
Water Depth: 55 - 70 ft.
Water Temp.: 75 dgs.
Information : Was able to get out today along with another member of the RAFT fishing team, Jack
Dos Santos. Leaving Manasquan at 8 am, we headed for the ridge and arriving to a small fleet of boats
and party boats. Made my way around to the northeast tip and started drifting large baits. At that point
the wind was less than 10 mph and the drift for us was good, needing only 5 oz to hold with 7 ft.
graphite bait casters. Not more than 5 min had gone by and our 1st fluke was a 4lb keeper. Continuing
to work that area, in 2 hrs we caught 10 fluke 7 of which were 4-5 lbs, plus 2 birds, 5 skates, and 1
3lb stargazer. At 12:30 we moved down to the sooutheast ridge, and having to use 8-10 oz to hold, we
continued to catch 4 more fluke 2 of which were keepers by a long shot. Kept hearing reports of only a
few fish being caught here and there, yet Jack and I had very good action all morning up to 1:30 when
the wind began to blow and the catching got worse. Headed back to the inlet with a very nice days
catch. PS: waiting patiently for the next canyon trip to come.
Angler Name : Charlie Luecke

Boat Name: Hook'em & Cook'em
Date Fished: 8-29 to 8-30
Location: Lindenkohl
Fishing Method: chunking
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 100 lb range
Bait or Lure: butterfish
Water Depth: 600 ft.
Water Temp.: 78 degrees
Information : At 8:15 we hooked up a major fish.... took 3/4 of the line off an Int. 80 and it went
straight down and stopped. Could not lift the rod. We had 24 lb of drag on it and stand up rod was bent
in like an n... After an hr. we hooked up another major fish.... same deal, straight down... we had the
line out on the outrigger that we did not bring in..... after an hr. we almost had this one up. We had
this on a Shimano lrs 50 two speeed with 80 lb test.. broke this one off under the boat.... the first
one was still on, after another half hour we lost the first one too, broke the leader at the knot. We
only had three people on the boat and we were all beat by then. Our guess is that these were major sword
fish. We had seen this before with big swords, straight down, and they sit there. We caught 5
yellowfins, four about 100 lbs and one 60 lbs., piece of cake.... nothing like those swordfish. We had
an excellent night and our butts hurt today. Weather was excellent, we are going back Sunday night
weather permitting.

Bait or Lure: Squid-Spearing combo
Water Depth: 70ft
Water Temp.: 73
Information : Was asked by a new boat owner to guide him out on the Ocean to try out his new 22ft Sea
Hunter walkaround and do some fishing. It was a great day to be on the ocean, flat seas, not to hot. I
took the fishing party out to the above area, and set up a drift. We started to catch Fluke on the first
drop, so felt it was going to be a good day. We only made about four long drifts over about 4hrs and put
13fluke and two Seabass in the box. Time was running out so on the way back to the inlet I made one
drift inshore off SeaGirt, not even a bite. Lots of Skates and Dogfish to get by to get to the Fluke,
but still some Fluke in the area.

Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 600

time on the troll to no avail. Setting up on the chunk at 7pm we were 2 for 6 before 8:30 on big
yellowfin. We experienced a steady bite all night long and ended up putting 11 very large yellowfin in
the boat with Billy Rowan fighting the last fish of the evening due to charter fatigue - a 130 pounder
that barely fit in the deck box. At fish light we pulled the anchor and headed home with no more room

Size: 40 to 100lbs
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 550 ft
Water Temp.: 78 degrees
Information : Had the Bill Laudien party on board for a Sunday /Monday overnight trip.
Began trolling 5 miles short of the west elbow with only skippy bites. After
an uneventful hour and hearing reports of slow trollin , decided to set up for the night.
At 8:30 we hooked up on a flat line with 50lb leader and after the sixth man took his turn on the rod we
boated a 100lb yellowfin.
Action continued through the night and by 7am we had boated 9 yellowfins and 2 longfins plus a few mahi.
Six of the yellowfins were
bruisers in the 80 to 100lb class. This was the first canyon trip for Bill and his father and friends.
They still can't believe the stamina and gut wrenching power of the yellowfins
and are planning to come back next year. We left for home at 7:30am with 11 tuna on ice.

before but the waves were still pretty steep. After chasing the blues and catching and releasing thirty
(plus one croaker) we headed off toward Manasquan Ridge for fluke.
We started fishing in 55' about a mile north of the ridge and began catching keepers right away.
There were only a few throwbacks. We wound up with a dozen up to 6lbs. with two others at 5lbs. The

a lengthy drift, all rods went off. Porgies, lots of them, around 12", like dinner plates. Found the
school, anchored up, and fished 1/2" pieces of worm or squid on small hooks for 100+ porgies (kept
some)and, ready for this, 15 weaks up to 4 pounds. Lots of fun on light rods and 6 pound test. And the

Information : Well to make a long story short the Sea ++ developed a mechanical problem on the first day
of the Mid Atlantic. We blew an injection pump. We only fished 1 full day and made it out to the edge on
the last day at noon. The Canyon Club and the mechanics Jon Usinger and his partner Mike work with us to
fix the problem but Man Engines droped the ball. You think since there were over 80 Vikings in the
tournament with most powered by Man engines that Man would have made sure that there was plenty of
mechanics and parts available. Jon and Mike were the only ones there and thanks to thier 48 hours of
little sleep were able to keep most of the boats going. It was an embarassment for Man engines. When you
have a level of compitition like this there are bound to be break downs.
Needless to say my mate Darren Berry and the second mate Rudy tried to keep a stiff uper lip. It was the

Set up the slick and let out a few chunks, and had our first fish on

with only 8 big Blues, for 5 hours of fishing, pretty disapointing!
The day could have been had it not been for a couple of idiots. There
was one butthead in a cat that though we ran a slick for his benefit to

Information : The crew of the Canyon Runner fished the Mid-Atlantic Tournament Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday sponsored by Billy Wrede of Prestige Plumbing. On Tuesday we stayed on the west wall of Toms
and had 5 shots at White Marlin. The first shot was a double and we got them both. The first to the
boat was immediately released as it was very short. The second was boated and measured 3 times. It was
65 inches but very fat and probable made the 60 pound minimum however it swam away. We released another
and missed two more before lines out at 3:30. On day 2, Wednesday, we again raised 5 White Marlin but
today was not our day. We missed the first 4 and finally boated and released the last. Funny how on
the calmest day our average was the worst even though we had the best looks at the bite. On day 3,
Thursday, we put one in the boat. We started the day 1 for 4 on Whites, losing a good one just 10 feet
from the leader. However, the last White Marlin we saw that week we kept. Measured three times it was
66.5 inches with a 28 inch girth and a fat tail. We had only a 60 pounder to beat and thought this one
just might do it. Unfortunately, it did not. The Canyon Runner is back in Pt. Pleasant and packing out
at this moment for the second half of our canyon season. 30 trip in the books, 30 more to go.

Bait or Lure: macks
Water Depth: 230
Water Temp.: ?
Information : got to the hole by 8am, set up and within an hour had a
large mako in the slick. she did a great job fouling our lines up, but no
hook up. 2 hours later a pup mako entered our slick and fed for awhile
then disappered. we waited patiently for mama mako to show her face & she
did. she broke water 30 feet off the stern & procceded to foul our lines.
we were nothing less than disgusted at this point. with time running out
we dicided to head for home. after dumping the left over bait & cleaned
up i noticed a flat spot in the water about 300 feet away, with the birds
working over the flat spot we figured that was about ware our chum was
dumped. took a ride over there to see and my fishing partner dorino
spotted a nice mako eating what was left of our frozen chum. he thought
quick and gaffed the small chum ball. while i broke off some chum to keep
the mako around the boat he set up a rod. before i had a chance to bait
the hook the gaff & chum ball slid off the transom, so now we had a
situation, despartly trying to avoid the big skunk like the last two
trips we retreived the gaff & chum ball. i cut a piece of the frozen ball
and dorino got the hook up & after a short fight we had the mako in the
cooler. to bad it wasen't the larger one we couldent hook up earlier.
after the fact we found the whole thing preaty funny. i will never dump
the bait until i hit the docks. thanks to dorino we avoided the
skunk.

I don't mind conserving the resource but I think we are getting bent over. Want more? How about 1
blackfish in the summer? I think we all better put more pressure on the gov't and it doesn't hurt to
join the recreational fishing alliance and other groups like that! I went down to the Cheasapeak last
week and they wanted me to buy a saltwater license. Thats the last time I go there. When you can't even
fish in tidal waters and the ocean without a license its time to make our views known and our tax
dollars work for the majority of the people not the small special interest groups.

was about 5 to one. Many just missed 11 inches. Ended the day with less than our limit because
we ran out of bait. Not a single bergall. Am surprised more people don't fish for sea bass. They are a
fantastic eating fish
and give the same type of fight as most of the fluke we have been catching this year.

Boat Name: Bounty Hunter
Date Fished: 08/19/2001
Location: Mud Hole
Fishing Method: Jigging
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: Up to 29"
Bait or Lure: Crippled Herring
Water Depth: 150 Ft.
Water Temp.: 79 Degrees
Information : Capt. Paul Regula had the Charlie Corsentino charter on board the Bounty Hunter. What
started out as a Shark charter quickly turned into a Tuna trip. While drifting in 150 ft. of water in
the area of the BA Buoy our chum slick was invaded by a large school of Bluefin Tuna. Jigs, Darts,
Bucktails, Spearing & Ballyhoo drew no attention. However, our Crippled Herring lures jigged thru the
school resulted in several hook ups with 2 keeper Bluefin going into the box. No Sharks were seen during
the entire day.

Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 100 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 450
Water Temp.: 80+
Information : Hats off to Capt. Dave and Mate Nick. After trolling for 6 hours without a single knock
down, we decided to set up for chunk around 6:30 pm. By 8:30 pm we had our first large yellow fin
boated. No bite until 12:00 am, after that nasty storm, we boated our second yellow fin. Then around
3:00 all hell broke loose, we boated 3 more big yft and lost at least 10. We had them swarming around
the boat. All 5 yft were in the 100 lb range. The reasons for so many lost - a couple crossovers, a few
spit hooks at the boat, and our inexperience. All in all an awesome trip. See ya next year.

He set bait again and 1.5 hrs later had 147lb. sword in boat. capt bob, carlo, and i shared fish

with only a few skipjacks around. Continued trolling towards the Bombs and Elbow with no luck. Just
before getting back to the Tip around 1pm the flatline daisychain gets hit. One of the 3 man crew jumps
on that rod. Before we knew it there were 5 rods bent over. The boat was thrown into neutral and the
mayhem began. With lines going in every possible direction we each grabbed a rod and tried to avoid each
other while fighting the fish. When the first fish was broke the surface another put down a rod to grab
the gaff. Minutes later four fish are flopping all over the deck. We looked around and it seems the last
fish got off. After 10 minutes of untangling the lines, 2 from being hung up under the boat, we came
across another fish waiting patiently on the line caught underneath the boat. We then boated the fifth
fish ending one of the most exciting moments of tuna fishing.

medium action freshwater rod with 8 lb test, and I did much better than the others who were using

did the job. No giants, but the action was continuous and the weather was nearly perfect.

Information : The Marc Began Charter started out fishing the mud bouy aboard the Lastlady with Captain
Ralph and Crew Harry. We had a hit before the mate got all the lines in the water. Lost that one and
then lost another 2 before the action dryed up. We moved inshore to the shrewsberry rocks and had a
nice pick going for the rest of the day. At one time we had 3 or 4 fish on at once. We fished light
tackle and everyone had fish, although at first they would only bite on the pole Captain Ralph was
holding. Good thing we took him along. By 1:30 we were out of bait and ended up with 35 blues and 1
keeper fluke, which was kind of a fluke. We probably lost another 10 fish. They were not biting hard.
Often just sliding the bait up the line. Very strange indeed for Bluefish.

20 fish, some for up to an hour. The smallest fish on the boat was a 95 pound Allison. The rest - all
over 100 pounds, were mostly between 110-120 pounds. In total we put 10 yellowfin in the boat and we

usual spot as we trolled around the letters we decided to look around for a better place to set up for
the night. Working up the edge we anchored well away from the rest of the fleet who were busy fighting
over what few parking spots there were. Our move rewarded us with a solid pick of big yellowfin all
night while several boats in the fleet struggled to put anything in their boat. While several yellowfin
were lost, we put 10 in the boat between 80 and 110 pounds as well and our seventh mako of the year -
this one was 125 pounds. In addition we released the biggest blue shark we have ever seen, easily over

Location: Manasquan River + inlet area
Fishing Method: drifting
Specie: Fluke
Size: 17 - 18 "
Bait or Lure: Killie + squid - sea robin
Water Depth: 10 - 35 ft.
Water Temp.: 71 - 74 ddgs.
Information : Took the inshore section of the RAFT out for a day of fluke fishing. Was foggy
earlier, so we fished the river from the train bridge to the inlet. Using light bait casters, killie and
squid, we did manage to catch a few nice fluke, 2 of which were 18". As the fog lifted we made our way
out to the area just north of the inlet in 30 - 40 ft of water, and began catching sea robins and flluke
on robin filet. Caught a bunch of short fish along with 2 more keeper fluke. Went thru 6 sea robins for
bait in less than 1 1/2 hrs. The river is starting to shape-up with decent size fish, IF YOU CAN HANDLE
THAT TYPE OF FISHING !!!!!

Fishing Method: Troll / Chunk
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: 70-90 lbs
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 140
Water Temp.: 72.7
Information : Didn't have enough range to reach the claw so we stopped 10 short inbetween 2 other boats
spaced about 1.5 miles apart. Started the chunk around 10 and the first line started to squeal 45
minutes later. Went 2 for 4 (first experience chunking on the anchor and the "issues" of clearing).
Hugh hooked all 4 and graciously turned the rod over to Mike for the last one. Bite lasted about 1 hour
and then turned off. One had a few shark bites in the tail, probably from a Blue shark caught on one of
the other boats. We were the only ones with BFT in the area! First Tuna catch on this boat...
Troll in/out produced nothing, not even a knockdown!

Fishing Method: Troll
Specie: Albacore Tuna
Size: 40 lb
Bait or Lure: Spreader bars
Water Depth: 500ft
Water Temp.: 74
Information : Arrived at the tip of Lindy just before dawn. The story from those that were there
Saturday night was that most boats caught at least a couple fish. At least two boats had loaded up and
were heading in but most reports were of those that had a couple and lost a couple. We saw a blue
marlin leap just as we hit the tip, lots of bait in the water. During the day we took 4 albacore on the
troll, always single hits and lost two more. Bill Boals had the big fight, he had to bring in a 40
poounder that managed to loop a high flyer in the process. Bill expertly fought and extricated the fish.
We left for home about 2 pm. Lot of life was evident at that canyon, saw a couple marlin and several
tuna break the water during the day.

Water Depth:
Water Temp.: 74+
Information : Maiden offshore voyage for the Bounty Hunter for the year, produced a 10 for 10 day off
longfin. Our day
started with excellent conditions with respect to sea conditions and the projected offshore forecast. We
had a nice smooth ride and started trolling about 5:45 am
buy 6:30 we had a single hit and double header. The
anglers although new to the offshore seen (Diane, Prisicla and Brian) had no problem working together to
ensure all fish were put in the box. We continued with singles and another multiple hook up. It seemed
that others were not having the same day as ourselves based
on radio conversation and you could call this luck, but
I believe this to be why the Bounty Hunters seasoned crew has the reputation they have. The conditons
offshore also provided sightings of three whale species
and an extremely large school of bottle nose dolphin.
During our tour we also had the excitement of watching an estimated 350lb-400lb Blue Marlin make several
aerial jumps while feeding...unfortunately it never made it to the end of our line(s). In all my charter
had another great time aboard the Bounty Hunter and
can not wait to go again.

He eyed one jet and quickly turned toward the short rigger with the 4 of us in the boat screaming for
the fish to hit, he did and the 50 began to scream. For the next 2 1/2 hours we witnessed 15-20 jumps

it if you arrive to late and that could be at 7:30. Notning on the chunk at night. Phospherous made the
lines light up. First bite at 5:30 and 2nd right after that. 3rd fish was a screamer and we had to get
off the ball. Fought that fish for 15 mins or so and the leader parted. It came back very frayed.
Nothing then until 10 and another screamer. This fish the hook pulled after the 2nd 200 yard run. Left
there later in the afternoon and drifted NE of the dog in 145 and took yellowfins. Need to fish 30 pound
flouro carbon when fishing the upper water column. The bite is hot. Our marina, Cape May Marina, had at
least 22 Bluefin and yellowfin, with several Bluefin in access of 100 pounds and one close to 200

there after a bumpy ride at about 6:00 AM. Had the first bluefins on about two minutes after getting set

day with one more and had our limit by 7:30 AM. Wanted to stay out and try for some yellowfins but two
of the guys were sick so we headed in. An unbelievable day all in all.

Date Fished: August 3
Location: Mud Hole
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: to 25 lbs
Bait or Lure: Assorted feathers, small lures
Water Depth: 130
Water Temp.: 73
Information : We don't like taking these until we are sure that we will have fish to catch! Little by
little the Bluefin Tuna made it's way up north over the past few weeks, and after 'running over them'
last week returning from the Hudson Canyon, we called a couple of inshore fishermen over to where we
spotted 'em, along with free-jumping Mahi! They sent us emails on Tuesday that they had 'their pick' of
BFT with a few keepers, so we were able to fill our clients' wishes to fish for these powerful fish
(along with their cousins Skipjack, Bonita & their friends, the Mahi-Mahi!)
First trip out was Scott Shapiro and friends, and I've got to hand it to Scott & his crew...they put up
with quite a heave on Friday. Facing a stiff S.E. wind & 4-6' rollers at the Mud Hole, they had a nice
catch of BFT, 'Falsies' and Mahi!

Setting up at 6pm in 600 feet of water we knew we had only until 2am to put together a catch. However,
the recent action combined with the presence of these larger yellowfin combined for a happy charter by
11pm when we started to release fish. Each man had a fish to his own when we started to release the
charter called it a night very early.

Date Fished: August 1 - 2
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 60-80
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 70-72
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Brad Burgess and Mike Zajac did a 4-hour turn around and
went right back out to the Hudson Canyon on Wednesday with the Joe Kay charter from Flemington
Department Store. Upon arriving at the edge at 4:30pm several boats were already anchored up despite
the fact that the day time chunking we had last week has completely shut-off. Unfortunately we were
forced to do the same or lose our spot and we all missed a great longfin and big-eye bite that occurred
on the troll between 5pm and 8pm. Once on anchor we had mahi under the boat immediately and boated a
dozen before dark. As soon as the sun set the yellowfin came up and we picked 4 fish before 8:30pm.
The action slowed for an hour then let loose. Between 10pm and 11:30pm we put another 8 yellowfin in
the boat and released 5. Every yellowfin was over 70 pounds and most were more like 80. In fact, the
charter was so worn out that Brad and Mike fought the last few. We were on our way home at 1:00am with
17 yellowfin to our credit and back at the dock at 4:30am.

Location: Mud Bouy
Fishing Method: Chunking
Specie: Bluefish
Size: 3-10 lbs
Bait or Lure: Bunker Chunks
Water Depth: 56
Water Temp.: 68-69
Information : Set up our slick with a 5 gal frozen chum bucket and periodically supplemented with chunks
(tail & heads). Within 10 mins we had fish on and by the time we left (10:30pm) the fish finder could
hardly see bottom the fish were so thick.
We deposited the remainder of our flat of bunker and chunks into the deep a few minutes before pulling
anchor and surely caused an underwater frenzy.
The water was medium to rough with 2 - 3 ft average water with the periodic rouge swell giving us a good
bounce. The seas had settled considerably as the evening progressed and made for a much nicer ride home
than the amusement park roller coaster trip to the Mud Bouy on the way out.

Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: to 50 lbs
Bait or Lure: Bars, Zukers
Water Depth: 400-600
Water Temp.: 74
Information : On the latest trip of the season, we again picked the Hudson Canyon. We had the most
beautiful ride out, clear skies, moon rose in front of us, shooting stars...whew just magnificent!
Arriving 4:30 Saturday morning, & while the 'real estate' on the West Side was being argued over, we
stayed on the East wall and had a decent morning with skittish fish. (I say 'decent' but in reality we
had one of the better troll trips that day!) Smaller smoker, deep runner lures got the hits; bars were
ignored this day...however, it was all but impossible to 'load up' as 1 or 2 fish would be hooked, 4-6
rods would have knockdowns but the fish wouldn't really school and attack. Keeping 4 Yellowfins and 1
gaffer Mahi, the anglers 'released' a half dozen more Tuna and that same number of smallish dolphin.

Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 65-100 pounds
Bait or Lure: Butters
Water Depth: 500
Water Temp.: 74
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Mike Zajac and Brad Burgess braved what was leftover from
Monday's gale and headed out to the Hudson Canyon with the Joe Simpson charter from Millersville, PA.
Setting up on the chunck just before nightfall the conditions were better than hoped for as the seas
laid down considerably. A longfin, yellowfin and a few mahi were boated before midnight and then the
action turn on. Between midnight and 2 am the charter put a dozen 65-100 pound yellowfin in the boat,
released 4 more, and boated a 125 pound mako. The Canyon Runner was on their way home by 3am with an
exhausted crew including Joe Simpson's mother Pauline (age 50) who boated 3 of the tuna herself. In
total the charter caught 18 yellowfin plus the mako.
