Final results: 1 Weakfish, 1 Snapper, 1 Spined Blowfish. But, it still beat working!

We were the 2nd boat there. FIrst fish within the hour. 2nd fish a halr hour later. Lost it to the motors when we missed our 1st chance with the gaff. It was all down after that. All the other fish missed the hook. It was an active day. Sunday took Frank Crampton's grandson out for croakers sw of the inlet. Plenty of those and up to 3 pounds. Those big rays put up quite a battle in light tackle. Will look to go again next week. I think we will try to stay out of those fleets. Although the fleet came to us. Some ver bad mannered fisherman. Boat Name: Bottom Line
Date Fished: 8/27/00
Location: Monster Ledge
Fishing Method: Drift/Chum
Specie: Thresher Shark
Size: 100-110lb
Bait or Lure: Whole Mack/Green Skirt
Water Depth: 135 ft
Water Temp.: 71
Information : Jason Burke took us out on his "Bottom Line" Sunday morning to see if we could find some Mako steaks for the grill. Drifting near the ledge it was slow going all morning, with not many signs of life. Report on the radio said that there had been a few small makos caught earlier at the Lilian so we decided to pull in the lines and head there for the afternoon drift. As Jason was reeling in the mid-line he felt some tension. He set the hook on a fish that immediately took a leap skyward. It was a thresher. Woody managed to bring the fish boat side (much too quickly). As I leadered the fish, I learned the hard way just how accurate they can be with their tail. I still have the marks on my leg to prove it. After a few more good runs the fish was brought boatside once more and quickly released in the hopes that he will someday grow to be a tournament winner for some lucky angler.

Boat Name: Carcharodon
Date Fished: August 26-27
Location: Toms Canyon
Fishing Method: Troll/Chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 60-100 lbs
Bait or Lure: Butterfish (chunk)
Water Depth: 645
Water Temp.: 81
Information : Jerry Sr. , Jerry Jr. & Matt Fatjo; Jim Salvi, Bill Logan & Steve Komoniesky were aboard the Carcharodon for the best Yellowfin trip of the season. Not "gross numbers" but quality & size of fish were the benchmark against the rest of the season. It seems crazy enough to chunk in 81 degree water, but with plenty of Wahoo being caught before we got there I knew that "fresh" fish were being deposited in the 'Jersey Canyons on Saturday, and they were hungry! I had marks under the boat all night; we had a few runoffs early, a fish or three but at 4:30 with a troll in my mind, mate Kenny Gallop & I stared chunking heavy & had the charters up working the lines. The bite started promptly @ 5 a.m. & we left 'em biting! A dozen Yellowfins between 60 & 100 were boated & the ones lost...well, they're the stuff dreams are made of. But for those of you who know the size of the fishboxes on a 38' Henriques, you know how plump & nice these 12 fish were! Nice job, men: see you next year...& thanks Kenny for a fun trip!

Location: HUDSON CANYON
Fishing Method: CHUNKING
Specie: S-Fin Mako Shark
Size: 5 '
Bait or Lure: BUTTER FISH
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 71
Information : Got to the canyon Fri. evening about 8:pm. On the way there a fog set in at the canyon tip because the water temp. dropped to 68. The fleet was at the elbow on the west wall. The water temp. there was 71. I decided to drift and after 15 min. two reels started to peel off line. I thought the lines got crossed when they both went in the same direction to the back of the boat. It was a five foot Mako shark that ate both lines. It jumped three ft. out of the water, about 20 ft. behind the boat. It bit through my line but it gave my wife an additional 5 min. fight before cutting through her line. That was it for the night. A lot of boats on the west wall but only a hand full of fish caught. The best report heard was of a boat on the east wall that had 5 yellow fin. That makes 2 trips to the canyon this year with 0 fish for the return.

Location: Hotdog (north west end)
Fishing Method: Chunkin
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-50lb class
Bait or Lure: chunks
Water Depth: 124
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Overnighted at the hotdog on Saturday night. First bite occurred at 7:00 pm resulting in multiple hookups and fast, furious action. Another small bite came on at 10:00 pm. Real strong bite came on at 3:00 am and lasted for about an hour. last bite occurred at 6:00 am. We pulled anchor at 7:00am and left the fish biting! Final tally was 10 yellowfin all in the 40 to 50 lb class with one larger fish. Probably lost at least that many due to pulled hooks, breakoffs, etc. Great night full of action! Hotdog was loaded with squid and tinker mackeral all night long. I counted only about 6 other boats at the hotdog on Saturday night. I attribute our great fishing to the fact that there were only a few boats there. The hambone was mobbed on Saturday and I heard the overnighters didn't do that great there.

The funny thing was there was only 3-5 boats fishing there all day (we fished till 1:30pm. What a great day to be out on the water. Tight Lines

Information : Went back to the Hudson Canyon with Jack Singh and a group of Doctors from Italy for an overnight chunk and troll. The weather was incredible and the ride out was interesting with pods of porpoise, whales, sea turtles, and an ocean sunfish all spotted by the group.Trolling that afternoon was productive with the longfin at first, then a bigeye at dusk which was lost at boatside unfortunately after a 1/2 hour fight. Chunking that night was sporadic and we lost more than we caught. Two yellowfin were lost to a huge blueshark that invaded our chunk line, and a third was boated with a 13" bite taken out of its underside. Others swam with the tide (under the boat) and broke off on the running gear. All in all we got 6 out of 13,not a great ratio, but everyone had a fair bit of action.

Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 30-50 pounds
Bait or Lure: butterfish
Water Depth: 600

Information : It may sound like a broken record but the song remains the same. Fishing amongst 150 boats on Friday night the Canyon Runner had their worst trip of the year with the Sean Mallory charter from Middletown, NJ. Only chunking we arrived at the Hudson Canyon at dark went 1 for 3 on yellowfin and went home. The only good thing to say is since Sean caught 45 longfin on his July trolling trip he has averaged 23 tuna a trip this year on the Canyon Runner.

Information : Started trolling 3 mi shy of Olleys Lump in greenish but clear 71 deg. water. Kept heading east & 5 mi past the lump we hit a patchy weed line at the edge of 74 deg blue water. No fish under the weeds but we found a trash can holding bait fish. Started chumming with a few spearing and cut mullet & hooked a 3 lb. trigger fish' then the pair of dolphin showed up & both fell for mullet chunks. They were about 24 &33". Trolled tilln we were 15 mi SE of the S-Ridge & Picked up a few skippies & albies. Beautiful day on the water, lots of sea turtles. On a STRANGE note we saw at least half a dozen lobster pot markers floating loose as if cut off. This is bad news for boats running at night as they were laying on they're side and had as much as 50' of line attached.

Finally found warm water, 76, at the 40 line, trolled for hours but no fish. We turned back to the cooler water and set up a chunk. After 30 minutes 3 rods went at once. Fishing Method: Chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 35-50 lbs
Bait or Lure: butterfish / mullet / tinker mackeral
Water Depth: 400-900'
Water Temp.: 75-77
Information : Left at 3pm. Trolled swimming mullet for 1 hr missing 1 longfin. Set up chunk at 9:30pm on east wall and drifted 9 miles SW past the west wall dragging a sea anchor. Encountered a steady stream of strikes, between 2-3 fish/hr from 10pm-2am and again from 5am-7am. Plenty of bait in our spreader lights from squid to tinker mackeral. A number of small dolphin also flashed in and out throughout the night. During the one extended lull we had, we jigged the mackeral and several dolphin. We released the 2-3 lb dolphin, but live baited a few of the mackeral. The mackeral were so thick, it brought back memories of the spring mackeral run as we were catching 3-5 fish/cast. Anyway, due to a tired crew which slept most of the trip (only 2 of 6 remained awake more than 3 hours during the night), we ended our trip 4 for 15 with a small mako release (40 lbs), 1 keeper dolphin of 8 lbs and 2 yellowfin to 50 lbs. Among our lost fish were a 50 pound yellowfin at the side of the boat (someone decided to try and he man it without a gaff) and a second that was at the boat but dove and was rescued by the props. The balance of our losses were shorter 5-10 minute fights. The rigged swimming mullet, possibly by the speed of our drift, were once again the bait of choice followed by butterfish and the live tinker mackeral. Remember, eliminate frustration, gaff fish!!!!

Randy had the fish to the boat with 30 minutes and it weighed 135 pounds. 2 more yellowfin were chunked during the night. Up on the troll in the morning we did not have the lines out for more than 5 minutes when the center rigger with a bird/green machine combination started screaming. Everyone on the boat fought this one on a Penn 50W with matching stand-up rod and in 45 minutes Neadel grad the leader and Zajac sunk the gaff. This fish weighed 165 pounds and is the 9th Big-Eye caught by the Canyon Runner our the last 7 days.

On Friday we ran to the wilmington and we did mark bigeyes down around 30-60 feet but the would not come up to feed. You can not start fishing before 8:30 and I know those fish were probably feeding before then. I also know the night chunking should be pretty good. We just kept trolling over them but they would not come up. Most of the tuna fish came from the Hudson.

We made a move inside of the rocks off Bay Head tower and I immediately put a 23", 4 3/4 pound fluke in the boat, followed by another keeper and several blues.. I started fishing the channel between the nude beach area and the hook. Wham! I had one fish after the next, best flukin all year! I caught a nice 23+ incher. I also ran into little black sea bass. Saw big boats running further off and followed. found 77 degree water but no fish except skippies. Tried all over the area, even stopped and chunked for 2 hrs. On the way back we heard two boats talk about fish that were 8 mi toward home so we stopped there too. Nothing. Heard from a friend that he stopped at the 40 line and got 2 yellowfin. I guess we ran right past the fish. When will I learn. Be back out this weekend. Ever the optimist.

Arriving at the edge at 6:00 p.m. we found our spot and anchored up for the night. The first shot of fish came at 11:00 p.m. and we went 5 or 7 on yellowfin to 80 pounds. The second shot started at 1:30 a.m. and by 2:30 we put 7 more yellowfin in the boat. However, that was the last of the chunk bite as the water moved south and the fish moved with it. Up on the troll in the morning we put 2 Longfin in the boat and headed for home with 15 tuna on ice.

Fishing Method: drifting
Specie: Weakfish
Size: 3-6 lbs.
Bait or Lure: snapper fillet -robin strips-squid
Water Depth: 35-55 ft..
Water Temp.: 72-74 dgs.
Information : It's monday 8-21,8am, and just getting back from an overnite canyon trip that ended on sunday at 2pm. Discussing the day's plans with my wife, Karen and daughter Lorie, THEY decided that we should go fluke fishing. The day's forecast sounded good, so bait and lunch were bought and the boat headed for the shore south of Manasquan. Our 1st stop was the Mantaloking rocks. Pulling a few drifts on that area produced 3 fluke with 1 keeper. Our 2nd stop brought us to the Thunderbird. Drifting extra large squid strips we got into a variety of fish instantly. The first being a 20 inch fluke, three 1-2lb. croakers, and a 3lb. weakfish. With a 10 kt. n-ne blow we drifted almost parallel down the beach, continuing to catch 3 more keeper fluke, a bunch of 1-3 lb. bluefish, and more croakers, as the fish box began to sound like a mako magnet pulsator. Changing our bait tactics from squid to sea robin strips + snapper fillet, we caught 1 more keeper fluke, 3 more larger bluefish, and to Karen's surprise a 6 lb., 25 inch weakfish which inhaled her snapper fillet. Also, 3- 3lb. seabass were caught and kept for dinner. Altogether, a bunch of keeper fluke, 6 bluefish, 3 seabass, 3 fairly large croakers, and 4 weakfish from 3-6 lbs., ended a day of inshore fishing with the female side of the Ron Antonelli Fishing Team....

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: August 20-21
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Big-Eye Tuna
Size: 135, 155, 165, 175
Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo/Jets
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 74
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Mike Zajac and Brad Burgess were back out to the Hudson Canyon Sunday to Monday and found the Big-Eyes right where we left them Friday. Ten minutes after the lines were in the water we had a Big-Eye wolfpack attack the spread and 3 stayed on for the battle. After 1 hour the Chris Pete charter from Connecticut had the fish close to the boat and mates Burgess and Zajac darted all 3. Those fish weighed 135, 155 and the last to hit the deck pushed 175 pounds. In addition, during the afternoon troll on Sunday we put 10 Longfin into the boat. Setting up on the chunk we chose to drift as we had a box full of fish already and the boats on the anchor did much better. We ended a slow night with 2 yellowfin on the chunk. Getting up on the troll on Monday we quickly put 5 more Longfin in the boat and as we were reeling up to head home we had two lures pulled out of the hands of Zajac and Burgess and had two more Eye-Balls on. After 45 minutes, 1 Big-eye around 165 pounds hit the deck and 1 broke off. The 4 Bigeyes today made for 7 in the last two trips.

Leaving midnight & chugging into a bright, clear moonlit night, we arrived at the 50 fathom line in the dark to find mark after mark after mark. It wasn't long until the bars & the green machines were crashed & we really caught 'em all morning. The men were attempting to catch & release at one point... so we pulled off to the East side for a fruitless mid-morning break. (Where are the decent Mahis ?) Upon returning to the West Side, the crowd had cleared & with 1/2 hour left of trolling time, we went 4-4-4 on good sized fish! An even dozen was kept & was plenty for the crew to lug home! Kudos to David Seebode for working the cockpit & teaching the men the ropes! Mike, see you next time, thanks again.

Information : Mark Bradley, and I set out to try our luck at catching a big fluke on Sunday, and were rewarded with a rare sight. Conditions were perfect for my particular style of fishing, with water clearity being ideal. I was fortunate enough to boat an estimated 14 + pound fish he measured 35 inches in length, and almost 16 inches in width. Did not have my scale with me so exact wieght was not recorded. I will tell you, it is the biggest fluke I have ever seen. The good news is he is still available, to the disbelief of my fishing patner, and good friends in a nearby boat. The monster was released to hopefully win someone a tourney someday. The thought that this oldman has been swimming in and out of Sandyhook bay for over 20 years weighed heavy in my decision to release him.

Information : Had the Ron Antonelli Fishing Team on board for an overnite troll-chunk-troll.. Leaving Manasquan Inlet at 11 am. on saturday 8-19 and running into a north west 15-20 kt. blow, we arrived at the west wall of the Hudson at 4 pm. Getting reports about the previous day which resulted in a better troll bite than what was happening the past few days, the crew consisting of mate Bob, Ron Antonelli, Ron Jr., Mike Soriano, Dan Tolve, Pete Centanni, prepared the cockpit for the late afternoon troll.. After a short time of cruising the pots, the outside rigger pole screamed resulting in a solid hook-up with an 80 class yellowfin..Continuing to troll until 7 pm., we then picked our spot for the nite... As predicted by NOAA, the evening winds began to lay down. The chunk bite did not exist for us until 3am. at which time a 60 lb. class yellowfin committed itself to the ice chest. Squid were far and few, the water temp. was cooler than normal, and the thermo layer was at a skinny 50 ft., conditions not suitable for late August chunking. As 4 am. approached, the wind conditions were very tolerable and made for a comfortable nite. At 4:30 another 60 class yellowfin decided to eat, and was added to the box. Not having any other bites, at 6:30, we decided to prepare for the troll once again.. Just as the wind had calmed 8 hrs. prior, only to begin to blow-up by 7am.. As other boats had experienced like us, with the chunk, they too got on the troll making for a tournament -like condition, navigating in close proximity over the bait pods and between the pots. Within a short time, a double of longfin smashed the spread and were boated. Continuing to work the small area along with 20 or so others, we again pulled a longfin from the center rigger daisy chain. At 9 am., the lines were brought in and we headed for the beach, with a total of 6 fish, 3 yellowfin + 3 longfin. Hope conditions improve at the Hudson, real soon .........

Water Temp.: 72
Information : On an otherwise dreary Friday, it seemed like a good idea to push the Dennis Ko, family & friends charter through. Carmine Ko remarked "I don't mind the rain, I just hope it's not bumpy out there". Bad omen. For anyone who was there it was quite a nite. 30 miles of rain on the way out, bad radio reception because of all the static in the air & a general feeling that a real "heave" was due to happen. We were thinking 4-6' foot seas, but after Captain Paul Regula brought the bad news of a worsening weather report, we tied everything down, & it really came on. Through 8-10' seas all night, the crew hung on & worked the cockpit like troopers. For a couple of fish it might have hardly seemed worth it to them... until we arrived at the dock. There were a lot of "donuts" that night, the charters saw a side of Mother Nature they've not seen before & were home safe & sound.

Tried deep water...tried shallow water. Ended the day with 8 keepers between us and as many throwbacks. We also picked up a couple croakers and the usual pleathora of junk fish. Bottom line...we all had fun catching fish.

Information : Capt. J. Gierla put L. Viviano. M Piosko and B. Myshka right into the fish as soon as we started. We had 8 keepers (Fluke) in the boat the first drift. The Sea Bass were all over the place. We must have caught 40+ (released a bunch at 10/11")an added 7+ Fluke to the catch. J. Gierla took the pool with a 7+ lber while we were fishing right off the beach. We added two Blues to the catch towards the middle of the trip. We stopped just North of Manasquan for a few minutes of the and I jigged two Weakies (had a double, one on the teaser and one on a crippled herring and J. Gierla had one also). Ol' timer L. Viviano was high hook of the day and B. Myshka nicely added to the catch (Bill needs to replace a lot of tackle). This was the best day I had fishing this year.

Size: 178,175,170
Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 74
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Brad Burgess and Mike Zajac had the Blair Potter charter from Rumson, NJ out to the Hudson Canyon Friday on the Canyon Runner. Chunking proved to be a pick as we went 4 from 12 on yellowfin and longfin. However, the action came on the troll in the morning. Trolling the elbow at 8:00 a.m. a big-eye wolfpack attacked the spread and we had 4 Big-Eyes peeling line from the Penn 50Ws. Quickly breaking one off, the fight was on as the charter and mates fought the 3 other Eye-Balls for two hours until the largest was darted and put in the boat. All 4 Big-Eyes hit ballyhoo rigged behind Moldcraft Chuggers and Ilander lures.

We also raised some Bigeyes and went one for two, boating a 150lbr. which everyone helped bring in.At 1030AM with 10 fish filling the box the group decided they had enough fish considering the rough seas and packed it in early.

THERE WERE 50 BOATS STILL ON THE CHUNK AND AFTER TALKING TO A FEW I WAS GLAD WE DECIDED TO TROLL, THE CHUNKING REPORT WAS NOT VERY GOOD THAT NIGHT. WE GOT THE FIRST KNOCK DOWN ABOUT 5:30 AND HAD TWO OTHER FISH CRASH THE LURES. 3 FOR 3 ON THAT ONE. THE REST OF THE MOURNING CONTINUED TO BE HIGH ACTION AND WITH 12 LONG FINS AND 1 YELLOWFIN IN THE BOX WE CONTINUED TO CATCH AND RELEASE UNTIL 11:00 AM AND TURNED THE BOAT BACK TO THE BARN. WE LOST COUNT AT 30, LOTS OF ACTION. THERE WERE SOME EYES CAUGHT BUT I THINK THE NUMBER OF BOATS ON THE TROLL HURT US. HOPE TO GET OUT AGAIN, CHUNKING SHOULD BECOME MORE CONSISTANT SOON.

Was mostly using 6 to 8 oz to get my 17 lb test line to the bottom. I was using peanut bunker and that was the right thing to do. The bunker was getting whapped most of the morning. I got 2 19 inch fluke and one 17 or so. I gave some bunker to the guys next to me and they whapped a couple of nice fish each in about 15 minutes. If I were a better fisherman I easily could have limited but then I would have little to look forward to.

Information : Got blown-out by the weather, so Al and I left my whaler in the parking lot, and we jumped on the Sea Fox for a half day of weakfishing. Captain worked to find the fish in various areas throughout Raritan Bay. However, we never really got into what could be called "a really good bite." By the end of the day, the 40 people on the boat probably caught about 35 keeper weakfish and almost as many shorts. The pool winner ended up being a 4-5 pounder. I ended the day with 2 keeper weaks 15-17", 4 throwback weaks 12-15", a 19" fluke, and about a dozen 1-3 lb. blues. Al closed the day with 2 keeper weaks 20-24" and about a half dozen small blues. We would have gone back out on the afternoon trip, but the captian opted to stay in the marina during the afternoon due to a lack of fares.

Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 50 to 80 lbs
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 625

The tuna was then gaffed and some bait was thrown over the side on a shark rig.The maco then hit the bait and was hooked. Not knowing that it was hooked, the maco was at the back of the boat, when we decided to gaff the shark. As soon as the fish was gaffed it began to roll violently and snapped off the leader and was lost! The trip ended the next morning with five yellowfins in the box.Not too bad for the first trip on the season.

Boat Name: time Bandit
Date Fished: August 11
Location: Deal
Fishing Method: Drift
Specie: Fluke
Size: 16" - 24"
Bait or Lure: Squid Strips and Spearing
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Information : Started fishing about 8:30 AM about 31/2 to 4 miles off Deal. The first hour was a bust with no drift but after the wind picked up, we started to catch some fish. We had about 1 - 1 1/2 hour of fishing before the wind picked up where it was almost impossible to hold bottom. We had 4 nice keeper Fluke and all the throw backs were just under legal limit, also lost a nice fish at the boat. The area was also loaded with Sea Bass, we had a cooler full with two weighing in at 2lbs. One other boat fishing real close to us also reported catching some nice big Fluke. Some fo the Head boats were fishing much closer inshore then previously and since they didn't move, I assumed they were catching fish. Maybe the fish are finally comming inshore? I didn't get a chance to find out because the rest of the weekend was unfishable!

Boat Name: Big Marie S
Date Fished: 8-11-00
Location: About 2 miles off Deal
Fishing Method: Bottom
Specie: Fluke
Size: 16-18 inch
Bait or Lure: Squid/spearing
Water Depth: 50-60 feet
Water Temp.: 70
Information : Capt. Hank had the Big Marie S on some lumps about 1.5 to 2 miles offshore of Deal. With a SE wind working, it took 8-10 oz of lead to hold bottom. A decent enough pick most of the day, it seemed like most of the 35 people aboard had at least a couple of fish. Probably about a 50:50 ratio of throwbacks to keepers, also a few sea bass, small blues, and sea robins to keep things happening. Ended up with 3 keepers, 2 shorts, and a couple of sea robins myself. Pool fish was about 3.5 lbs. Glad I went, especially considering how lousy the weekend weather was.

Angler Name : Capt. Bernie Roth

Boat Name: Tenacious
Date Fished: Aug 10-11
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Troll and Chunk
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 30 -60 lbs
Bait or Lure: Butterfish jets bars zuckers
Water Depth: 424
Water Temp.: 77 degrees
Information : Took the Joel Frey party to the Hudson Canyon for an overnight troll/chunk trip. Trolled the east and west walls from 4:30 pm till 7:30 pm and put one longfin on ice , the only troll bite. Set up for chunking on the west wall and began to pick fish till midnight when we had 2 longfins and 6 yellowfins on ice and the action died. At daybreak we opted to keep chunking due to the slow troll bite and it paid off. By 8:00 am we put three more yellowfins in the box, pulled the anchor and headed for home. The water was 77 degrees and flat calm despite NOAA forecasts.

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: August 11
Location: Kona/Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Blue Marlin
Size: 10.5 Feet 400 Pounds
Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 700
Water Temp.: 76
Information : Three Blue Marlin in Five trips to the Edge!!!!! The crew of the Canyon Runner did it again. Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Brad Burgess and Mike Zajac took the Jim Patterson charter from Westfield, NJ out to the Hudson Canyon Friday and once again the tuna were unresponsive. Trolling the east wall down to the 100 square was unproductive. However, moving off into the deep and working a small pod of bait we had the 5th Blue Marlin of the year raised to our pattern. Once again, the Blue decided to eat a ballyhoo rigged behind a small blue/white Islander on a Penn 50W with matching stand-up rod- and the fight was on. This Blue Marlin started the battle greyhounding across the surface almost spooling us but some quick boat maneuvering had us gaining line and the 10.5 foot Marlin spent the rest of the fight straight up-and-down. Not tiring herself out jumping, the fight lasted significantly longer the then last 2 Blue Marlin and after 1 hour 30 minutes, with Jim Patterson on the rod and the leader in hand 3 times, mate Burgess finally got the leader for the last time. The Marlin was measured, photographed, revived, the hook was removed and she effortless swan away to fight another day. Weighing in around 400 pounds she was the 3rd Blue Marlin we released since August 2. We finished up the day with a small bite and put 2 longfin and a few mahi-mahi in the boat for the dinner table.

After 8 hours of trolling from the Elbow past the 100 Square and into the deep all we had to show for our effort were 2 Longfin and a couple of misses.

Date Fished: 8/10/00
Location: Glory Hole to Chicken Canyon to Manasquan Inlet
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Atlantic Bonito
Size: 2 - 10 lb.
Bait or Lure: bars, cedar plugs, daisies, jets, feathers
Water Depth: 150 - 200 ft
Water Temp.: 75 degrees F
Information : With Ken and Greg Quintana and Stan Dylag in the crew, we took an exploratory trip offshore (or is it inshore if you're not at the "edge") to find signs of pelagic life. After trolling the Glory Hole and Chicken Canyon and seeing no signs of life other than a few scattered birds and one large ocean sunfish, we turned for home and found that the starboard engine would not run above 1400 rpm. Suspecting a partially clogged fuel filter and not being able to remove and replace it without the aid of a wrench, we decided to troll all the way back to Manasquan Inlet. Not a hit all day until we were 9.5 miles from the inlet at which point a small skippy hit a jet. From there until about 2 miles off the inlet we caught one more skippy and about a dozen bonito to about 10 lbs. including one triple hook-up. The bonito were feisty and hungry hitting everything we were pulling. Seems like you don't need to go far to hookup with members of the tuna family but if you want the real deal don't stop until you get to the edge -at least at this time of year.

Specie: Albacore Tuna
Size: 30-50 pounds
Bait or Lure: Jets
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Well it was bound to happen some time. After an amazing early canyon season the fish appear to have turned off on the troll. Today was the second poor trolling trip in a row as the Andy Straton charter ended up with one lonely longfin in the box. Captain Dulanie work from the tip down the west side to the mouth back up the east side and across again but never found any bait concentrations at all. Looking back on last years fishing logs showed that almost to the day the trolling turned off in the canyons only to have the chunking turn on. I hope the same goes for this year!!!

Folks,
It's really time to fight back against the bluefin shutdown and quota. I feel that if we get enough people involved we can get the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) involved to help fight NMFS. The RFA's mission is to fight back against politics and commercial fishing - for the recreational fishery. Please check out http://www.4seatow.com/rfa.htm or www.savefish.com.

I am in the process of trying to get a 'person' at their phone # 1-888-SAVE-FISH to find out if they can help us. If we get enough people writing in to them on the subject and calling them, they are eventually going to see a need to help us against NMFS. I personally would rather donate my 25 dollars to RFA then purchase NMFS's permit. NMFS isn't even grateful enough to e-mail or send a letter to its permit holders when new restrictions take place. It's almost sad that they don't do 'SH!T'.

If you aren't already an RFA member, you can join at http://www.4seatow.com/rfa_app.htm

Please spread the word to start calling 888-SAVE-FISH or write letters to the RFA about the subject. Fax to 609-296-3956 and Mail to.

We moved off to 17 Fathoms only to pick 2 Bluefish after an hour of chunking. A brief stop back at the Mud Buoy produced a big zero. Moving inshore to the Shrewsbury Rocks we read the Blues in 50 ft. of water and had our first fish on within 2 minutes of anchoring. The bite continued non stop for 3 hours. We filled the fishbox with 50+ Blues and released another couple of dozen.

Location: North East of the Cigar
Fishing Method: Chunk
Specie: Bluefin Tuna
Size: 53 Lbs.
Bait or Lure: Butterfish
Water Depth: 120 feet
Water Temp.: 74.6
Information : We went to the Cigar for the first chunk trip of the year. The fleet was all on the south end. I decided to set up on the north end away from the fleet. The first hookup was 15 min. into it and the fish headed for the sun. We could not stop it and it was lost. Eric hooked up again and we boated a 53lb. tuna. Good day. My thought to stay away from the fleet proved to pay off again. The guys on the radio with the fleet were complaining on no fish.

Boat Name: Tenacious
Date Fished: Aug 5-6
Location: Hudson Canyon
Fishing Method: troll-chunk-troll
Specie: Yellowfin Tuna
Size: 40-80 lbs.
Bait or Lure: assorted plastic-squid-chunks
Water Depth: 500 ft.
Water Temp.: 73-75 dgs.
Information : Had the Ron Antonelli Fishing Team out to the Hudson for an overnite troll-chunk-troll. Leaving Manasquan at 9am into a 15 knot north blow, we arrived at the west wall to find better water conditions. Immediately setting up for the troll and deciding not to use bars, the guys proceeded to set-out their array of single lures and birds. Working the area, we had a pick of yellowfin in the 50-70 lb. range. Finding the weather and water conditions improving and luckily not to NOAA's prediction, we were beginning to enjoy a very, very nice day of trolling. Moving on across to the east side and working the area with a bunch of others, we had a four fish knockdown boating 3 in the 60lb. range. Continuing to pick a few singles thru the afternoon, opted to sit on the east side for the night-shift. Hearing mixed reports aboout the previous night's fishing, the crew knew they were in for a somewhat tough night. As the night went on, our weather and water conditions improved once more to a flat calm sea making it a little easier to endure the overall slow fishing. Trying their usual methods with the help of mate Joel, the crew continuously worked to provide a steady supply of fresh, live baits to entice the few fish that were cruising under the east side lights, resulting in a decent catch by 4;30 am ,at which time 3 of the 5 lines took-off, hence 3 more 50-70 lbrs. on the ice. At 6 am the boys were getting antsy to troll , again ther assorted plastics entered the flat waters of the east side. Pulling one more nice yellowfin off the far center rigger at 8 am. Overall, ending with a good catch of longfin/yellowfin, the overnite crew of the "Ron Antonelli Fishing Team" called it a day... The crew namely; mate, Joel, Roland, Ron Antonelli, Mike Soriano, Dan Tolve, Jack DosSantos, Mike McCarthy, Ken Mylnarz.

Angler Name : Trevor Lange

Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: August 6
Location: Toms Canyon
Fishing Method: Trolling
Specie: Blue Marlin
Size: 500 Pounds
Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 600
Water Temp.: 75
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie and mates Jason Neadel and Al Bond had the Trevor Lange charter out on Sunday for a one day canyon troll. Unfortunately, as we expected the 125+ boats fishing the Hudson on the weekend pushed the tuna down and the fishing was less then desirable. Opting to leave the crowd and fish by ourselves we headed down the 100 fathom line to Toms Canyon. Once again fishing away from the crowd proved fruitful. The second we dropped off the edge on the west wall of the Toms the flat line went off and we had a longfin on. While reeling in the rest of the lines, however, the mates saw a Blue Marlin come into the spread, dropped the short rigger ballyhoo back to it (that was rigged by Al Bond) and it was engulfed. Quickly putting the longfin in the boat, Trevor, Jeff Jennett, Harry Elliott, and Dave Mulvaney all from Drexell Hill, PA fought the 12 foot Blue Marlin for 30 minutes on a Penn 50W and matching Penn stand-up rod. Jumping 4 times the fish was finally subdued and brought to the boat. With Jason Neadel taking care of the leader duties the fish was photographed, measured, revived, the hook was removed, and she effortless swam away. The weight was estimated at 500 pounds. A couple more tuna were trolled and we headed back to the barn with our second Blue Marlin release of the week. Credit must most significantly go to Scott Lazowski owner of the 48' Viking "His Lady" as it was his outrigger ("borrowed" off of his boat Saturday night when ours was broken Saturday morning) that the Blue Marlin was baited off of. Without his outrigger we would have had to cancel this trip. Thanks again Scott and the crew of the His Lady - We Owe You One!!!!

Specie: Fluke
Size: 14" to 23"+
Bait or Lure: Squid&killie; bucktals and green twister tails
Water Depth: 20' to 45'
Water Temp.: ?
Information : My son Rob and I caught the end of the outgoing tide with a SW wind in the Terminal Channel, where we marks near the bottom with the fish finder. Used a hilo, sandworm on top & combo on bottom on one rig, and a 2oz. bucktail with a dropper with a combo on the other. Caught a few weakfish and fluke, all shorts. The tide shifted to incoming so we moved to Flynn's Knoll. Since it became more overcast, we added green Gothcha curly tails onto rigs for some color. Caught more short fluke and a bunch of sea robins. Moved again to the north end of False Hook Channel and drifted north into the Sndy Hook Channel at a fast clip. A friend in another boat said he was drifting at 4 mph. In about 35" of water, I had a hit, and I set the hook so hard my rod was creaking (I was using a Shimano 2000FX with 8 lb. test and a light Rhino pole). I thought that the rig was stuck on the bottom. I kept tension on the line for a minute or two and the fish started coming up. When it surfaced, my son netted the lip-hooked, 23"+ fish with one pass. When it hit the deck, the hook fell out. Caught two more keepers at 18" and 18.5", with some shorts and sea robins. The weather got snotty, so we headed for the dock at 3PM. Tight lines and creaking rods to all!

Information : A group from Visy Paper on Staten Island (Including Gary Weaver Jr. & Sr., Darren Kologi, Gary Weaver, Sr., Bob Falcone, Piatr Norakowski and last but certainly not least Aggas Ashghar ) were aboard for what had been scheduled as an "Inshore Tuna Troll" but with the closure of the schoolie Bluefin fishery, we agreed to hit the Mud Buoy for another day of bluefishing with light tackle. Getting an early start leaving the dock @ 5.a.m. seemed like a good idea since the bluefish bite had been early & fast at the Mud Buoy, but upon making the turn out of the Manasquan Inlet, we were greeted by a stiff 20 knot northeast wind. Mate J.P. Dalik remarked "I think it'll be a 14-16 knot cruise!" before laying his head down for what turned out to be a 9 knot cruise for the better part of 90 minutes! 16 knots was made for the last 4 miles and J.P. got a nice long nap... good thing! After throwing the hook, we proceeded to chum frozen bunker to what looked like strong marks, but the fish were quite skittish. Only after taking out the pre-warmed chum & ladling the heck out of it did we get the fish to the boat & keep them there. In fact, after a lull of an hour with just a pick, we started them up again @ noon, kept them going & left them biting. The boys were good sports working the 12-20 lb tackle & filled a cooler with their catch.

Specie: Fluke
Size: 17 - 22.5"
Bait or Lure: squid/killie & squid/spearing
Water Depth: 25 - 45 feet
Water Temp.: ~ 70
Information : Fished with Al Romanelli, Craig Kimble and Craig's 7 year old son, Joel. Started fishing on Al's Miss Shelly in Raritan Reach at ~ 9:00 am. Caught several keeper fluke on Squid/spearing & squid/killies on bucktail teasers. Fishing at the edge of the channel in ~ 30 feet of water yielded two keepers 17 - 19". Moved out to Ambrose Channel and caught several more keepers 18 - 22.5" in ~ 40 feet of water. Moved over to the Staten Island bayshore to chase birds and breaking fish, where we caught and released as many blues as we wanted. Young Joel roped at least 10 - 20 of them. Ended the day with about seven nice keeper fluke between 17 - 20" and at least 80 or more bluefish in the 6-9 lb. class. Friday's fabulous fishing was somewhat marred by the fact that we hit something submerged in 28 feet of water on the way home and bent the crank shaft. Ended up being a costly sea tow back to the dock and the Miss Shelly will be out of commission for a few weeks. Went back out on my 15'4" Boston Whaler Rage the following day, and found the fish exactly where we left them on Friday afternoon. Fluking with Squid/spearing on bucktail teasers yielded another 15 keeper fluke from 18 - 22.5" Keepers were out numbering shorts about 4 to 1. We threw back at least 2 dozen fish that were keepers between 15.5 - 17". It is a great time for some excellent fluke action!

By 12:00 noon the ocean was like a lake. Tight lines.

Information : A break from the Canyons & a surprise...Ron Laspino, friends and family joined us on the Carcharodon for a day of bluefishing at the Mud Buoy. A late start caused us to miss the predicted early bite, but the crew hung in there until we chummed ol' yellow eyes to the boat. Fishing with light tackle from 6-15 lb tackle gave the charters a nice fight & taught us how to enjoy ourselves within a few miles of shore! Congrats to "Pop" who was high hook for the day.

Size: up to 4 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Bunker
Water Depth: 65 ft.

It did not take long to get the Blues going and wife Wendy along with daughters Amy and Darleen had no problem catching all the Bluefish they wanted despite poor fishing conditions. The wind against the tide and a strong current made fishing a challenge. By 11AM we went inshore and had some excellent Fluke fishing putting 13 keepers in the boat and releasing 20+ shorts. We topped off the catch with 2 dozen Seabass taken on the rough bottom.

Bait or Lure: Ballyhoo
Water Depth: 600

Trolling in solid 5-7 foot seas the charter quickly went 7 for 7 on longfin. The next shot was a single yellowfin but as the lines were being reeled up mate Mike Zajac spotted a Blue Marlin behind a bait, dropped it back, and the fight was on. The yellowfin was quickly boated and then they went after the Blue Marlin. After a number of jumps the fish was brought to the boat, the hook removed, revived and she swam away. The day was finished out with another yellowfin and 3 dolphin (our first of the year after 17 canyon trips) up to a 25 pound bull.
