Boat Name: QUEEN MARY
Date Fished: April 29,1999
Location: Point Pleasant
Fishing Method: Jigging
Specie: Atlantic Mackerel
Size: Up to 16"
Bait or Lure: red tubes and #27 diamond jig
Water Depth: 200+ maximum
Water Temp.: 50-53
Information : I Went to Belmar, with my 3yr. old son, was turned away by all mackerel boats, (except for Gary Fagan's Big Mohawk-but he was bottom fishing.) Spoke to Howard Bogan the night before and he was willing to let my son on the Jamaica, but I couldn't get there by 7:30am. Drove to Pt. Pleasant and was welcomed aboard the QUEEN MARY. They had a light crowd of about 15 people, and an excellent mate. We went out NE for a max. of 16 miles. The macks were spotty, we were in and out of them. The Capt. did his best, moved the boat alot. A small boat kept hindering our drifts. We drifted across the mud hole, over various depths. The Capt. kept marking them between 30-60 feet, but most hits were around 30 feet or above. It was my first mackerel trip, and I had a blast. I will have to go every year now! I even pulled 5 fish at a time over the rail. Double, triple and quadruple headers were common, but I watched alot drop back into the water. My son enjoyed playing with the wiggling macks, and riding up on the bow's pulpit, he also did a good job putting macks in the cooler for me. He enjoyed this trip tremendously, was well behaved, and made his mom proud. I went home with 54 mackerel, some of which were given to me. I ate some, smoked some, gave some away, put some in the freezer for bait, seperated some parts to grind for chum, and burried heads and bones in the garden. I am grateful for the Captains who trusted my parenting, and were willing to let my young son on board. I would definitely recommend these boats for those who like to take kids fishing!

Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 75
Water Temp.: 48
Information : Captain Phil Dulanie had the Canyon Runner out with the Mike Vittelo charter from Red Bank, NJ to get in on some early season Sea Bass action on the inshore wrecks. While techinical it is still a little early to get these fish inshore, fishing one of our better producing wrecks we put together a great catch for this time of year. The day started chasing mackeral which proved to be a slow pick so we ran at 28 knots 20 miles south of the Klondike. While we only fished for 3.5 hours, 4 anglers boated 55 Sea Bass to 4 pounds and 12 keeper Blackfish. In addition, we caught another 30+ shorts which we released. All in all, a great start to the inshore Sea Bass fishing we will enjoy for the next couple of months.

Water Depth: 18-30 Feet
Water Temp.: 48.9
Information : Only had a few hours to fish today.Got out to Romer shoals @ 10:00 AM and joined the already amassed fleet of private & party boats. The strong NW wind made for a bumpy day. After an hour of heavy chumming and only 1 flounder ( also didn't see any other boats doing much of anything ),I decided to try my luck in the rips. First drift yielded to my surprise a 16 inch fluke-the earliest fluke I ever caught-but due to the new fluke regulations I had to release this early arriver-Next drift netted my first striped bass of 1999- a fiesty 24 incher-third drift went fishless & I headed to the barn.

Information : Ran up to Long Branch in the morning and fished a wreck there. Banged 2 big blackfish to 9 pounds within the first 1/2 hour but let them go because of spawning season and then a couple small blackies but other than that the action died. Tried a little closer to shore on the rock piles off of Long Branch, nothing much. Then ran to the Sea Girt reef and fished a nice wreck there. We were marking suspended fish on a piece of the wreck which turned out to be some cod as we caught a nice 10#er. Also some keeper blackfish, and a few seabass. The wrecks definitely had a lot of life to them but the fishing is still on the slow side but should wake up soon. All in all a good day, some keeper blackies, a couple seabass, and a real nice cod, can't argue with that.

Information : Well gang , had the wool pulled over my eyes again this year. Got this new subscription to the fisherman magazine. You know south jerseys leader in the fishing world...... bull!! If you read this past weeks reports, you would read that Higbees and Double A marinas were open, that there were big weakfish out there and blues and stripers. Fish were being caught on miss fortesque, and bonanza, and even seeing early fluke even though you cant keep em. Well he is thr REEL story. Niether marina is open, Double A opens next week, no bait shop is open, and the Miss Fortesque is high and dry still from the winter and the Bonanza wasnt to be seen either. the guy at the Double A said I was the first boat to launch for 1999 season. I brought my own bait and proceeded out . Made it about a 1/4 mile and motor overheated. Stuck thermostat, dont know why it didnt turn up in the back yard when i test ran it but o well, as for fish I had 1 huge fish break water 20 yards from the boat, but got no bites and after a while decided to row for shore. I'll be back out in a week or 2 anyway, but I wont be reading the lies in the fisherman magazine anymore thats for sure

Fishing Method: Bucktailing
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 20"-27"
Bait or Lure: Bucktail w/Twister tail or Mackerel Strip
Water Depth: 17'-25'
Water Temp.: 51 Degrees
Information : The "Adam Bomb" ran its first trip today and despite the 20-30 knot winds managed to boat five bass ranging from 20"-27". We also missed three other fish. The fish bit best within an hour of the tide chane, after which they shut off. Bucktails tipped with mackerel or a twister tail worm produced all of the fish. The wind was just about blowing against the tide and made for a tough drift through the rip. All of the fish came off of Prissy Wick shoal as that was about the farthest most boats left from shore. The Point afforded you some shelter from the wind there and if you had gone any further you would really get into some rough conditions. With another degree or two in temperature rising, the fish should really turn on.

Information : Went fishing at the Keansburg Pier for Flounders and Stripe Bass fished from 09:00 to 11:30, no hits, saw some crabs, which is not a good sign for the flounder fishing as far as i know, moved over to the bulkhead in the Highlands and caught a 19 inch stripe Bass 5 minutes into the fishing there. I fished there 30 minutes and saw 3 party boats fishing across the bay at the bay side of the Sandy Hook Park, moved to Sandy Hook and even thought the party boats were near by, did not get a bite in 1 and 1/2 hours. It seems to me that since we had another warm winter the flatties have moved out sooner then usual, which seems to be what happend last year in 1998. Will try to concentrate my efforts on stripe Bass in the Union Beach area (the area they call pebble beach) from now on and hope the keepers start rolling in soon. Good luck to all.

Had some shots of fish at the mouth of the Shrewsbury, and near the tug dock past the 2nd Bridge.. There must've been around 50 keepers for the boat.. I boated four, kept 3.. The action wasn't so great, but it's better than sitting at home!
