Angler Name : Neil LaRosa
E-Mail : njcharter@aol.com
Boat Name: Canyon Runner
Date Fished: April 27
Location: Raritan Bay
Fishing Method: Clamming
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: up to 36"
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 15 feet
Water Temp.: 50-53
Information : Before posting our first of 150+ fishing reports for the year the Canyon Runner crew would like to wish everyone good luck and good weather for the 2003 season. The Canyon Runner crew kicked off our 2003 season by making a run up to Raritan Bay to get in on some clamming for Stripers. The action has been excellent of late as long as you catch the tide and weather right and Sunday was no exception. Fishing the last of the outgoing and first of the incoming we picked away at Bass and flounder just west of Keyport on the flats in 15 feet of water. Fresh clam on circle hooks with 30-pound fluorocarbon worked best and Neil LaRosa of Middletown was high hook and put the largest Bass of 36 inches in the boat. We also release several shorts and had to chum heavy due to the excessive boat traffic. The Bass bite off Keyport, by the Reach, by Chapel Hill and best on Romer Shoals – looks like a great spring Bass fishery is shaping up quite well.

My son put the first flounder in the box almsot as soon as the anchor was set. He then caught a nice bass soon followed by another flounder before any of the rest of us had a bite. We soon had a good steady pick of bass before a fleet gathered around us and the bite completely died. A move of about 1.5 miles to a more secluded area put instantaneously back into bass. By the time we decided to call it quits, we tallied over 40 stripers and 7 flounders.

Water Depth: 10-15'
Water Temp.: 44
Information : My Brother Chris and I went for our first trip this year. Started off trolling stretches, but no takes. However, we tried to anchor, and could not get hooked. I had to go back to port and get my bigger heavier anchor, because the wind was too much. We got Chris his first striper on clams once anchored. I missed the good high tied because of my anchor issue. Lots of false hook-ups. Overall good time for first trip. Fish are getting active.
