Angler Name : Chris Kosty
E-Mail : captpaul@bountyhuntercharters.com
Boat Name: Bounty Hunter
Date Fished: 4/30/00
Location: Mid Range Wrecks
Fishing Method: Bottom Fishing
Specie: Black Sea Bass
Size: 2 to 5 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Clams
Water Depth: 130 ft.

Information : The Bounty Hunter had the Chris Kosty charter on board. Fishing on wrecks 25 miles to the Southeast of Manasquan only produced a slow pick of Seabass. Moving out to the East into 130 ft. of water, the action was much more consistent with a steady pick of Jumbo Seabass and Ling up to 5 lbs. 3 Codfish topped off the catch allowing us to come back to the dock with a full fish box for the third straight day. It might be noted that the National Weather Service blew the forecast 3 days in a row and fishing conditions offshore Friday, Saturday and Sunday were great.

Angler Name : Captain Bob Balewicz

Boat Name: Carcharodon
Date Fished: April 29-30
Location: Raritan Bay
Fishing Method: Trolling/Bottom
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: To 16 lbs.
Bait or Lure: Mann 18's
Water Depth: 13-18'
Water Temp.: 51
Information : Saturday, April 29 Raritan Bay Stripers were the word for Saturday's trip. With bunkers breaking surface all over the bay, the early bite offered up more than our share of 22-28" shorts, but the bite stopped for a good 2 hours. When the fleet cleared, I returned to the same area where I'd been marking scores of bait, and we dropped Mann 18's off four rods and was rewarded with 2 keepers of 16 & 13 lbs. Right after those two were fought, we had a rod go off and the fish immediately swam high and to the side of the boat . . . yep, a 6 pound Bluefish!

Sunday, April 30 Well, the wind waited 'till Sunday to show and when it did the Raritan Bay was a mess. I had Bob Wald of Croffutt & Smith Van Lines out for a combo Striper Troll & Flounder trip, and while we picked an early short, we didn't have Saturday's luck repeat. Sitting with the fleet off the Ammo Pier wasn't much better for flounder, only allowing a few keepers. Kudos to the guys in the smaller boats for gutting it out with difficult anchoring & crummy conditions. We all must be crazy!

Huge crowd on boat, I had about 2 dozen mixed sized bostons.. tight lines..

Information : The Bounty Hunter out of Clarks Landing Marina had the Werner & Wolfgang Sprie charter on board for a day of wreckfishing. After only finding Ling on wrecks to the East of Manasquan Inlet the day before, we sailed to the South and further offshore where we got lucky. Fishing in 140 ft. of 48 degree water we enjoyed non stop Seabass action filling our fish box plus a 120 quart cooler with Jumbo Seabass in the 2 to 5 lb. range. Without a doubt the best Seabass fishing we have had in a long time.

Angler Name : Andy Sokol
E-Mail : Skolmann@aol.com
Boat Name: Capt John
Date Fished: 4-29-00
Location: Raritan Bay
Fishing Method: Anchor-Chum
Specie: Winter Flounder
Size: 12-17"
Bait or Lure: Sandworms,Clam Strips,Mussels
Water Depth: 8-20 Ft
Water Temp.: ?
Information : Woke up at 6:30AM and was shocked to see sunlight-so I figured what the hell, grabbed my gear, loaded the car and went.Made 4 drops all along the northwest part of the Ammo Pier or along the Terminal Channel edge.We fished the last half of the out going and had a slow pick for the first 90 minutes or so.Then we'd get some good flurries of action with anywhere from 6-12 nice flatties being boated in a matter of minutes.Sandworms coupled with a yellow twister tail did the trick for me as I put 6 on ice here.Once the tide turned we headed to Romer Shoals. here I changed to a chartreuse twister tail and that made a big difference,as I put another 3 on ice in 30 minutes with only 2 more taken on the boat there. So I ended the 9 with nice fat flatties from 12-17 inches.Everyone seemed to get 2-3 with the high hook close to 20.

Boat Name: Smuttynose
Date Fished: 4/29/00
Location: Raritan Reach and Ammo Pier
Fishing Method: Trolling, anchoring
Specie: Striped Bass
Size: 18", 21", 22" and 26"
Bait or Lure: stretch 25 in charteuse
Water Depth: 20-40'
Water Temp.: 52
Information : We had an excellent day trolling. Stretch 25 in charteuse was the hot lure. In an hour and half we caught 4 Bass 26", 18", 21", and 22". The 26" fish was tagged. Trolling the channel edges off Keansburg produced those fish. Spoons and Shads didn't catch a single fish or get a single hit. We only had 1 stretch and I can't imagine what we would of done with 4. I have to buy more of those. Flounder fishing was pretty bad in the late late afternoon. One fish at 13" was caught. It was caught on bloods. From what I heard the flounder bite was better in the morning. One fish in the Navesink was caught as well as we were passing by the Oceanic Bridge to the bay.

Information : There was a bunch of garbage and a telephone pole in the bay from all the bad storms we have had. The fishing is the same too, bad. We caught 0 Bass trolling for 2+ hours. We tried rigs, spoons, and shads. Last time this boat was fishing they were catching on the shads. Too bad it didn't happen on our Bass trip. Another charter boat in the area had a little better bite but still no great with 1 short and 1 keeper. Then we decided to anhcor up for Flounder. This was a okay move with a decent bite. We had about 11 flounder between fishing 8 people. I had 4 fish and one was 14 1/2". All of this in 1 hour. All caught on sandworms. I did outfish everyone on the boat because I was using lighter tackle, smaller line, and smaller leader. Go small for Flouner with 12 pound test and 1 1/2 ounce sinkers.

Bait or Lure: Tubes & Jigs
Water Depth: 100 ft.

Information : The Bounty Hunter out of Clarks Landing Marina made it's annual "Fish for Bait" Mackerel trip today and found the fishing to be fair 11 miles to the east of Manasquan Inlet. After 3 days of severe northeast weather it appeared that the Mackerel schools were scattered. Stopping on readings and drifting only produced a quick bite of 15 to 20 fish, then they were gone and you would have to find them again. After 3 hours we had l/2 a fishbox of Mackerel along with some Herring. Enough to get us thru the upcoming season.

Information : Fished on course of 70 degrees for three miles. Fish were between 20 and 40 ft. Drifted for i 1/2 hours could have caught as many as you wanted. Word of caution a SE swell created a dangerous condition at the inlet on a ebb tide. There were breaking waves inside the jettys and one should use caution went entering or leaving this inlet. There is shoaling problem and with the right conditons this could be dangerous to say the least. NFA will leave thurs for their 5th annual Striped Bass tag and release program on the Hudson River starting the 29th of April. Tight lines Phil kozak NFA

Information : The Bounty Hunter made it's first charter of the year with Werner Sprie on board. It came as no surprise that Mother Nature would welcome us to the new season with torrential rains and zero visibility fog. Stopping on our first wreck at 40 miles and 150 ft. deep the 47 degree water produced a non stop bite of large Ling in the 3 to 4 lb. range along with 1 Pollock. Moving in to 80 ft. of water, the wrecks showed very little life. A handfull of Seabass, obviously early arrivals inshore was all we put in the box.

Size: To 1 1/2 lbs
Bait or Lure: Sand & Blood Worms
Water Depth: 8-18'
Water Temp.: 49-51
Information : What a difference a day makes, huh? Well, a couple anyway. Mid-week in the Raritan Bay, you could've netted the Stripers & Winter Flounders. But given the cold front and especially in the case of Winter Flounder, clouds, it made for a tough day of fishing for Rich Lenches & Walter Gasior. We heard of a few spotty Stripes that were jigged or trolled. Conditions warranted "drizzle" gear, handkerchiefs & spring fever, but there was a crowd of boats at Romer Shoal like I haven't seen since last year! Winter Flounder at Romer usually means they're on the way out, but I don't think so. Way inside Raritan Bay you can still load up on the flatties...if you know where!

Angler Name : fisherguy
Date:04/14/00
Specie: Striped Bass
Information : Hey, guys. Am I the only one out there who thinks this legislatioin to change the minimum length for a keeper from 28" to 26" is a really bad idea? The 28" figure is not an arbitrary one. It's based on the biological fact that a 28" fish could (should) have spawned. So why is there the legislation to change it to 26"? You know the other striper states will come under pressure to change their minimum to 26. It seems pretty obvious that there will be less and less fish if we start taking all those 26 inchers we've been catching. I'm old enough to remember when stripers were hard come by. The cleaning of the water (especially the Hudson) and the 28" minimum have helped stocks rebound to their current level where you can actually catch fish on a regular basis. So if it ain't broke, why fix it? No one is claiming this is going to help the striper stock, so why is this happening? Who or what is behind this shortsighted legislation? Anybody know? What do you guys think about it? I think it comes down to this: which would you prefer, more fish fry's in your immediate future, or being able to fish for stripers in your later years with your children?

Size: Up to 2 lbs
Bait or Lure: Clam Chum & Worms
Water Depth: 8-12
Water Temp.: 49-51
Information : Any other fools out on Saturday? Whew, that was some blow! I knew the weather was due to hit, so I dropped the hook on a favorite spot by 6:30; although it was on the incoming tide, had a few really fat fish in the box quickly by chumming heavy. Picked a schoolie striper and got stripped by a few others. Moved once & less than an hour later it was blowin' 30-40 knots...I was sorry I moved! I've fished the Raritan all my life & have never seen it like that. Guys around me were 50/50 w/flounder & striper setups but the fish just weren't biting that good. Maybe they knew enough to stay home!

Fishing Method: anchored with clamchum
Specie: Winter Flounder
Size: 12to14.5"
Bait or Lure: Blood worm
Water Depth: 8ft
Water Temp.: 54f.
Information : Hi guys went out for the first time this year and as it would happen mother nature was in a rotten mood. We left the ramp in surf city and headed up to harvy ceaders .Hoping the wind would hold out it did for about an hour but then it started to get even worse. we did manage to catch seven fish all in about two hours. there were five other boats there alreadyand we only saw maybe six caught be tween all of them . my frind was on another boat they had seven also. one thing that helped us out was the flounder pounder its the best investment i ever madeeven though its only a plunger on a 14ft aluminumpole cost six bucks to make. the tide was rollin in and thats why we probaly dident do as well .wind kicked up too strong for us so we went to try by ship bottom and only saw one fish caught by the 8 boats that were there. we tried but no luck. so the only good thing is we dident get skunked and went home with 7 fish.I"m going to try to keep up on my reports this year so we can all enjoy good fishing. I only get one day off during the summer being a marine meachanic really sucks at times especially when its good weather. so keep those lines tight and pray for mother nature to give us some good weather. thanks BoB
