Bounty Hunter Sportfishing

08/28/07
Captain Paul reports:
After fishing inshore since April for Stripers, Blues, Seabass & Fluke Capt. Paul finally made his first trip to the offshore Canyons with the Douglas Shearer charter. Arriving at the Toms at daybreak the pattern consisting of rigged Ballyhoo produced our first Big Eye Tuna within an hour. The Big Eye was followed by a large Long Fin Tuna and shortly after we got our second Big Eye. Both Big Eyes were estimated at 140 lbs. At mid day a large Blue Marlin that we estimated to be close to 300 lbs. inhaled a Purple Zucker. After a 45 minute battle the huge fish was brought to boatside and released. The charter went on to land 4 more Long fin and finished the day with a catch consisting of 2 Big Eyes, 5 Long Fin and a large Blue Marlin released. I will be doing a limited number of Tuna charters in Sept. If you want to be part of the offshore action call Capt. Paul at 732-323-8700 and reserve your days.

Captain Paul reports:
The Joe Stuzinsky charter was on board the Bounty Hunter on Sunday and Capt. Paul ran out to the area around the Sea Girt Reef. The poor Fluke fishing continued with no drift or wind. The charter landed a few shorts but no keeper Fluke were seen. The best we could do was stop on the rough bottom where the charter put together nice catch of 30 large Seabass. Capt. Paul is now booking Sept. Canyon Tuna charters and Oct. Seabass wreck trips. Call today to reserve your day. 732-323-8700.

08/25/07
Captain Paul reports:
Capt. Paul had the Mike Frenzel charter on board the Bounty Hunter on Friday. It was our first attempt at the Fluke after the 3 days of NE winds. A 7 degree drop in the water temperature plus a wind against the tide condition was not condusive to good Fluke fishing. The charter had over 25 bites but only 3 keepers were put in the box along with 26 Seabass. Only 16 days left in the Fluke season. Get in on the fishing before it is to late. Call Capt. Paul at 732-323-8700 to book your trip.

08/18/07
Captain Paul reports:
The Dan Halleran charter was on board the Bounty Hunter and Capt. Paul made his way up to Deal. What a difference a day makes as yesterday we had no wind or drift and this morning it was out of the NNW at 25 Knots with gusts to 30. The conditions kept us tighter to the beach and we worked in 30 to 45 Ft. The day started of slow but we found 3 pockets of Fluke that produced over 60 bites. 17 keepers were put into the box along with 15 Seabass. Fluke season closes in 23 days. Don't miss the fun. Call Capt. Paul at 732-323-8700 to book your charter on the Bounty Hunter. A proven fish producer!

08/17/07
Captain Paul reports:
Capt. Paul had the Krislee Hall charter on board the Bounty Hunter for a day of Fluke fishing. The 4 young ladies left their husbands on shore and came to fish alone. Fishing conditions were less than perfect as the lack of wind and current made for a day of little to no drift. The girls toughed it out and finished up with 10 keepers in the box. the largest weighing in at 4 lbs. Another 25+ shorts were released. Fluke season closes on Sept. 10th. Get in on the great fishing before it ends. Call Capt. Paul 732-323-8700 to book your charter.

08/13/07
Captain Paul reports:
The John Connolly charter was on board the Bounty Hunter for a Blue/Fluke combo charter. Capt. Paul ran up to the Mud Buoy and got into the Blues within minutes. The charter put 26 Blues up to 10 lbs. in the box. Giving the Fluke a try, a couple of hours of drifting in 60 Ft. on the rough bottom off Long Branch Produced 10 keepers up to 4 lbs. with over 25 shorts being released. Only 28 days left in the Fluke season. Now is the time to get in on the great fishing. Book your next charter on the Bounty Hunter. Call 732-323-8700 today.

08/08/07
Captain Paul reports:
Capt. Paul ran the Don Yowell charter back to the same area he fished yesterday off Long Branch. Where we struggled yesterday to put a catch together today was a different story. We had a brisk SSW wind and a 1 knot drift for most of the day. Working in 45 to 60 ft. the 5 man charter had over 50 bites and put 24 keeper Fluke up to 4 lbs. in the box. Along with the Fluke 16 Seabass were also caught. The closing of the Fluke season on Sept. 10 is fast approaching. If you want to get in on some great Fluke fishing now is the time to book your charter on the Bounty Hunter. Call 732-323-8700

08/07/07
Captain Paul reports:
The Tom Richel charter was on board the Bounty Hunter and Capt. Paul made his way up to the rough bottom off Long Branch. It was not a very exciting day as a total lack of wind and no drift had the boat standing still for most of the day. The charter picked away at the Seabass on the rough bottom and landed over 50. They kept 21 keepers and released the rest. As for Fluke over 25 shorts were released with 3 going into the fish box. Paul, the charter missed you and could have used your help. Book your next Fluke or Blue trip on the Bounty Hunter. Call 732-323-8700.

08/03/07
Captain Paul reports:
The Mike Frenzel charter was on board the Bounty Hunter for a day of Fluke fishing. Capt. Paul made the first stop in the Sea Girt Reef area and drifted in 50 Ft. We had plenty of bites but all the fish were short except the 4 that went into the box. Moving north to the Deal Rocks the fishing improved as the charter had over 40 bites with 13 more keeper Fluke up to 4 1/2 lbs. being boated. The group finished up the day with 17 nice Fluke in the box along with a handful of Seabass. I still have several weekend and week days in August available for Fluke and/or Blues. Call 732-323-8700 to reserve your day.

07/30/07
Captain Paul reports:
Capt. Paul had the Brad Fletcher charter on board the Bounty Hunter for a Bluefish/Fluke Combo trip. We were the first to arrive at the Mud Buoy and the area was alive with Blues everywhere. Anchored in 55 ft. the bite was non stop. The 4 man charter had over 60 bites in the first two hours and kept 4 Blues while releasing the rest. We left the Blues biting and headed back to the area of the Sea Girt Reef where we finished up yesterday. Working in 45 to 55 ft. the group put 9 keeper Fluke in the boat along with a couple of Seabass. Another 30+ short Fluke were released. August Fluke and Blue dates are still available. Don't miss the boat. Call 732-323-8700 to reserve your day.

07/29/07
Captain Paul reports:
The Barry Meier charter was on board the Bounty Hunter and Capt. Paul made his way out to the Sea Girt Reef. Drifting in a zero visibility fog with no wind did not keep the Fluke from biting. The charter landed 16 keepers with the largest comming in at 6 3/4 lbs. Over 25 shorts were released. In addition to the Fluke 19 keeper Seabass and 1 Bonita were added to the catch. Days in August for Blues & Fluke are still available. Call today to reserve your day. 732-323-8700.

07/28/07
Captain Paul reports:
The Werner Sprie charter was on board the Bounty Hunter and Capt. Paul ran out to the area around the Sea Girt Reef. Drifting in 45 to 55 ft. we could only manage a slow pick on the Fluke. After a day of drifting we had 11 keepers up to 4 lbs. and had released over twice that many shorts. Mixed in with the Fluke were the occasional Seabass. The charter kept a 1/2 dozen and released over 12 more that were short. August days are still available for Fluke and Bluefish. Don't miss the boat. Call 732-323-8700 to reserve your day.

07/27/07
Captain Paul reports:
The Mike Wilczewski charter was on board the Bounty Hunter and Capt. Paul ran up to the Mud Buoy. The reads were solid and we had our first Blue in the boat within minutes. The group had a steady pick on the Blues putting 26 up to 10 lbs. in the box and releasing over 25 more. By mid morning we were on our way into the area off Monmouth Beach to give the Fluke a try. The bite was slow with only a few shorts and Skates. Working our way south we finally boated 4 keepers off Long Branch along with a handful of Seabass. I still have a few days open in August for Blues and/or Fluke. Give me a call at 732-323-8700 to book your day.

07/18/07
Captain Paul reports:
Capt. Paul had the Gordon Price charter on board the Bounty Hunter and headed east to the edge of the Mud Hole. The Blues were scarce and it took a while to gather them up under the boat. It was not the fast action typical of Blues but good enough for the charter to put 26 fish in the box and release a few. We started in to try for Fluke off Mantoloking but then the rain came. The charter fished in the downpour with out weather gear and got soaked. They landed a ton off Skates,5 short Fluke and 1 keeper a big 7 3/4 pounder. That's when we called it a day. July and August are fluke & Blue months. Book your next charter on the Bounty Hunter. "A Proven Fish Producer" Call 732-323-8700.

07/14/07
Captain Paul reports:
Capt. Paul had the Joe Miceli charter on board the Bounty Hunter and headed 25 miles off shore to get in on the hot Bluefish action. It only took a few minutes to get the fish in the slick and the 6 man charter had non stop action. When we called it a day at noon there were over 100 Blues landed with 3 dozen going into the fish box and the balance released. I am now booking Bluefish & Fluke charters for July and August. Get in on the great fishing. Call 732-323-8700 to reserve your day!

07/13/07
Captain Paul reports:
The Mick Pirolli family was on board the Bounty Hunter and Capt. Paul returned to the Monmouth Beach area. Fluke fishing in the AM was a bust for us. No wind and no drift conditions produced plenty of Skates and Robins and 2 Fluke. When the wind finally came on at 11:30 the charter boated another 8 Fluke while releasing over 50 shorts. In addition over a dozen Seabass were caught on the rough bottom. July is the time for Fluke and Blues. Call 732-323-8700 to book your next charter.

07/12/07
Captain Paul reports:
Capt. Paul had the Hal Hall charter on board the Bounty Hunter and headed up to the Monmouth Beach area. Working in depths of 25 to 45 ft. there were plenty of bites but not many keepers. The charter put 11 keepers in the box and released over 50 shorts. Along with the Fluke a dozen Seabass were taken on the rough bottom. Book your next charter on the Bounty Hunter. "A Proven Fish Producer". Call 732-323-8700.

07/09/07
Captain Paul reports:
The Gordon Weir charter was on board the Bounty Hunter for a tough day of Bluefishing. Capt. Paul hit all the traditional spots like the Farms, 17 Fathoms, east and west side of the Hole without a sign of a Blue. He finally caught up with the Blues 25 miles east of Manasquan Inlet. We only had 2 hours of fishing but the charter put 23 Blues up to 12 lbs in the box and missed a like amount. It appears the start of the Spawn may be beginning. If it is we will be in for some lean days over the next week or so. I hope I am wrong. Book your next Bluefish or Fluke charter on the Bounty Hunter. "A Proven Fish Producer" We go the extra mile. Call 732-323-8700.

07/07/07
Captain Paul reports:
The Ed Morrell charter was on board the Bounty Hunter for a day of Bluefishing. Capt. Paul ran to the Farms area and found the Blues a mile south of where they were on the previous trip. The 3 man charter had all the action they could handle. After 2 1/2 hours they had over 50 bites keeping a dozen blues up to 12 lbs. and releasing the rest. A ride into the area off Monmouth Beach and drifting for Fluke produced 5 keepers and over 30 shorts. Fluke and Blues are biting. Book your next charter on the Bounty Hunter. "A Proven Fish Producer" Call 732-323-8700.

07/02/07
Captain Paul reports:
Capt. Paul had brothers Reno & John Mazzella on board the Bounty Hunter today along with visiting relatives from Naples Italy. They wanted to show the visitors what Bluefishing off NJ was all about. Capt. Paul made his way to the Farms and anchored in 100Ft. The Blues started off slow but within an hour it was non stop action. The visitors had a blast landing Blues up to 14 lbs. on Bunker baits and Ava 47's. By noon the box had over 50 Blues in it and the arm weary charter called it a day. July is Bluefish and Fluke month. Book your next charter on the Bounty Hunter. "A Proven Fish Producer" Call 732-323-8700.

07/01/07
Captain Paul reports:
Capt. Paul had the Kurt Gaiser charter on board the Bounty Hunter and fished between Long Branch and Monmouth Beach. The north wind was a welcomed change after the last 4 days of south wind. The drift was good and the Fluke cooperated. The charter had close to 100 bites and boxed 22 keepers. The three largest for the day weighed in at 3 1/2, 3 3/4 and 6 1/2 Lbs. It was a good day. July is Fluke month. Book your next charter on the Bounty Hunter. "A Proven Fish Producer" Call 732-323-8700.

08/31/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
Today I had Mr.&Mrs.Andrews back on board along with Roy Richmond for a day of fluking. We fished from the bathing beach on IBSP up to the SS Piers with mixed action along the way. The highlight of the day was a thresher shark that took Roy Richmonds hooked fluke as he was reeling it up. Roy fought the shark like a pro,and with some moving of the boat he got the 60lbs+ fish along the boat in about thirty minutes,we took some pictures and sent the shark on its way, it was a great catch on a 15lb spinning outfit. The fluking for the day was only fare.

08/27/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
Today I had Mr.& Mrs. Andrews back on board for a day of fluke fishing. We fished the Barnegat Light Reef and some spots to the north with the same results, a mixed catch of sea bass, fluke and the other stuff that you usually catch when fluking. The day ended with the seas calming down, a good ride home and some nice fillets for the table.

08/26/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
Today I fished in the same area as yesterday, from IBSP to SS Park in hopes of a repeat trip. The wind gods did not help us much today as we had little drift to speak of.This of course is very frustrating for any captain trying to keep his patrons happy. All anglers on board did have a great time enjoying the calm seas and the fish they put in the box kept them happy. I will try a different spot tomorrow and hpoefully have better results.

08/25/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
Today I was back on the fluke grounds with Neil Generose on board. We had a great day of fluke fishing with the two largest fish at 6lbs.A load of shorts were also boated along with some nice size croakers ,although not as many as yesterday.I will fish the same area tomorrow as it showed some promise with amount of bait present, especially squid.

08/24/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
Fishing in the ocean after a good blow is always a challenge.I fished north of Barnegat Inlet today off IBSP hoping to find the fluke in the same area as my last trip. The fluke I found were on the small side, thankfully the croakers I found were on the large side and in good numbers, this saving the day.All in all it was a good day on the water and I think the fishing will improve tomorrow as the bottom settles down.

08/13/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
Today I had the Steve Schuster party out for a day on the fluke grounds off IBSP. Fishing in general was very good for most of the day and it got better as the day went on and after the wind picked up to give us a better drift. We managed a good amount of keepers for the day and had some excitment at the end of day when I hooked a nice size Dusky shark only a few hundred yards off the beach. The fish took a bunker that I had just snagged out of a school that past by the boat. The shark was brought boatside and released.

08/12/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
Today I fished in the Mako for fluke in the Double Creek Channel. The fishing got better the closer I got to the lighthouse and so did the chop from all the boat traffic which eventually chased me off the bay.Fishing, overall was good, with a good amount of fluke taken. The size of the fish wasn't what I had hoped for but it still was a good day on the water.

08/10/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
Today I had MR.and Mrs Andrews back on the boast for a day of fluke fishing. As luck would have it we didn't make out to the ocean, with the wind howling out of the south, but we did manage to stay dry until early in the afternoon. The fishing in the channels and the inlet produced a good number of fluke for the day but we only had a few nice keepers to show for our efforts.

07/30/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
I had Mr. and Mrs. Andrews out today for a day of fluke fishing off IBSP. The day was perfect, with a light breeze to move us along,no rain and a lot of action for most of the day. We managed a mixed catch of keeper flike and some monster bluefish that seemed to be all over the ocean chasing bunker.

07/28/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
I had the Brad Butash party out for a 3/4 day of fluking nad had another day of great weather ,with just enough wind for a drift. The group caught a nice catch of keeper fluke along with the biggest sea robin that I have ever seen. All anglers on board had a great time and caught there share of keepers .

07/27/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
I had the Chuck Tucker party out for a day of wreck fishing. The day started out out and ended in flat calm seas and a mixed bag of fish to show for there efforts. Although the fishing wasn't what I had hoped for, all on board went home with a nice bag of fillets consisting of fluke, sea bass, porgie and some ling.

07/21-22/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
I fished two afternoons in the bay with about the same results both days.On Saturday it was a family afternoon with my wife ,Charlene catching the only keeper fluke and a nice weakfish for dinner. On Sunday I had the Jerry Carino charter out for a day of fluking and had only a couple of keeper fluke mixied in with a good amount of shorts. The charter went home happy as it seemed more important to be out on the water as a family than it was to put fish in the box.I was glad to be there captain on this fine afternoon.

07/15/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
With the water temp. back in the lower 60's and a hard south wind blowing the fluke fishing was a bit slow today. We worked hard to put a decent catch together but had some bigger fish to show for our efforts. The bait outfished the buck tails today, as we had a pretty fast drift and had trouble keeping the lighter stuff on the bottom. All in all I was just glad we got the day in and had some nice fish to show for it.

07/13/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
After my charter for the day did not show I decided to go fishing anyway. The weather was to good to pass up and the fluking got better as the day went on.Today we had much larger fish than in previous trips and in good quantity with all fish in the 22"plus range.I was glad to see the temperature holding in the upper 60's and the fishing holding up as well.Again many fish in the 16 3/4" range were released .

07/09/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
Today the water temp. had dropped over night which made for a challenging day on the fluke grounds. Again the jiggs accounted for most of the keeper fish, until the wind picked up and the baits rods did a little better. We had almost as many keepers as yesterday,it was just a little harder today. All in all it was another great day to be on the water.

07/08/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
We went back to the fluke grounds north of Barnegat Inlet and had a banner day with keepers from 17" to 22". The day started out with little wind to speak of ,giving us a great chance to worked the jiggs which proved to be the better method of catching fish as they accounted for most of the keepers.

07/07/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
The day started out as a fluke trip for Neal and John Generose hoping to repeat some the catches that I had been having. This all changed as we reached the ocean out of Barnegat Inlet heading north to the fluke grounds in 55 degree water and no wind to speak of.We difted around in circles for an hour with no keepers in the box so I made a move to some wrecks in the area looking for a good catch of sea bass to save the day. The water was warmer off the beach and the party managed a good catch of sea bass with a few ling mixed in.

07/02/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
Today was a much more relaxed day, as the seas calmed down we still had a good drift for our fluke trip. That got the day started, hoping for another good pull of keeper fluke,we found a great abundance of short fish but we put only a handfull of keepers to put in the box.If we were going by last years size limit we would of had some limit catches for the day.

07/01/07
Captain Kevin Delanoy reports:
Today I had my passengers back out on the wreck fishing grounds east of Barnegat Inlet. We fished a full day in the unpredicted choppy ocean and were rewarded with a good pull of sea bass and a few blackfish, all blackfish were released.I fished two wrecks today, one had only a few fish to speak of and the other had plenty of fish, with a tone of shorts, giving us the challenge of finding the keepers which we did.At the end of the day, everyone caught there share of fish and had a good time doing it.

Tenacious Sport Fishing Charters

08/26-27/07
Captain Bernie Roth Reports:
Hosted the George Spodak charter from Manalapn for an overnighter in the Toms Canyon. After noon trolling produced two short strikes on green machines but no hookups. Night chunking was very slow for us although there were a number of boats around us who did very well. The charter managed to hook up the only two bites at night and landed two yellowfins 65-70 lbs. Morning trolling was uneventful and we left for home at 10:30 am with the two yellowfins on ice.

08/23-24/07
Captain Bernie Roth Reports:
Hosted Bob Hager and his two sons Jason and Justin for an overnighter in the Toms Canyon. Longfins provided plenty of action in afternoon trolling and the charter went 3 for 4 and then 3 for 3. Chunking started out slow until we were able to net some large squid. Then it was drop and reel until 2 am when the charter boated their limit and some for the crew and went to sleep too tired to drop another line. We left at first light with yellowfins boiling behind the boat and with 6 longfins and 12 yellowfins on ice.

08/19-20/07
Captain Bernie Roth Reports:
Hosted an open boat overnighter in the Tom Canyon with Rob and Bob Kusmich, Tom Eagle, Michael Gasin and Art Crane. Afternoon trolling produced 2 bigeyes and 2 longfins. A third bigeye pulled the hook after 15 minutes. Night chunking produced 2 yellowfins and two swords. The 40 lb sword was released and the 80 lber was iced. We passed on morning trolling due to sea conditions.

07/26/07
Captain Bernie Roth Reports:
Hosted the Turner Construction Co charter from Somerset NJ for a shortened fluke trip. With no morning drift we slow drifted rubble piles on the Sea Girt Reef. The charter boated 14 sea bass with as many shorts and 5 keeper fluke with two over 4 lbs. This was Jennifer Biro's first saltwater experience and her great technique landed the 4-1/2 lb pool winner and several other fish.

07/15/07
Captain Bernie Roth Reports:
Hosted the David Pope charter from Brick NJ for a day of Fluke fishing. Stayed close to the inlet knowing the ugly south wind would get worse thru the day. By 11:OO am the charter had boated close to 40 fluke but only 4 keepers and several members were very green so we tried drifting in the Manasquan river. To our surprise we boated close to 20 more fluke but only one more keeper.

07/14/07
Captain Bernie Roth Reports:
Hosted the Andrew Banchi charter from King of Prussia, Pa for a combo bluefish/fluke trip. Anchored on the farms and after no bites moved to west side of the mudhole and drifted with chum. It didn't take long for the charter to enjoy double and triple hookups on 6-12 lb blues. After boxing 15 blues the charter continued catching and relesing blues till 11:30 when we moved to the Sea Girt area and drifted for fluke. The charter enjoyed solid action there also boating 30 plus fluke but only 3 keepers.

07/2-3/07
Captain Bernie Roth Reports:
Hosted our annual 4th of July Exploratory Canyon trip to the Carteret and Lindenkohl canyons with beautiful weather. Afternoon troll produced a short strike on a skirted ballyhoo and a 40 lb yellowfin on a rainbow spreader bar. Drifting at night from 500 to 1000 fathoms was uneventful with no bites. Morning troll produced a short strike on a ballyhoo and a 50 lb yellowfin on a ballyhoo. Avid fishermen Ron Bryan, Gary Brozaud, Gary Fekete, Ryan Scialaba and Roland Roth pulled out all the stops to coax the tuna to bite in 65 degree varying color water. Thanks to their efforts we were able to get four bites amongst widely scattered fish in less than desireable water conditions.

Around 10:00 Am the bite slowed up with only boating a few more until 11:30 we decided to give the Fluking a try. Only catching one keeper and a few shorts in the ocean,we tried the river on the way in, to our surprise we put six keepers in the boat as well as releasing a few more shorts. Still have a couple open dates in August , cal Capt Dan @732-899-5309.

Captain Dan McGivney reports:
Gene Hecht and crew from Hecht plumbing were out for a day of bluefishing. If reports coming from the day prior, we headed 25 miles to the NE and anchored up. We had a slow pick of bluefish from 5 to 10lbs in very rough conditions. With the wind blowing up to 25 knts out of the SE made for a long rough ride home. Enough fish were caught for the ones that stayed fishing. Still have some weekend dates available for the end of July and August call Capt. Dan at 732-899-5309 for available dates.

Captain Dan McGivney reports:
Al Schrader and crew were aboard the Megan Beth for a day of bluefishing. Stopping at the rocks it was slow as we only had a few hits, so we switched over to trolling to catch a few blues. Switched over to fluke fishing in 35ft of water and it was steady action with many shorts and enough keepers for everyone. A beautiful day in the water.

Captain Dan McGivney reports:
Lou Forenzi and crew from Hinkel's and McCoy's were aboard the Megan Beth on Saturday 7/07/07. Stopping outside the inlet we found the bunker an snagged a few,but no striped bass were interested in the offerings. Heading off to the NE about 14 miles we anchored and had a steady pick of bluefish all morning, the water was clean and the bluefish were leader shy. Filling a cooler at noon we switched over to fluke fishing and boated a few keepers as well as 15 shorts before heading in. Great day on the water. Still have a couple openings on the weekends the end of July and August, call 732-899-5309 for available dates.

Captain Dan McGivney reports:
John Mackston and crew from Bridgewater Volvo were aboard the Megan Beth for a day of Blue fishing. With the wind blowing and the tide against it ,conditions were tough to say the least. For the ride home the wind droped out and the seas layed down for a nice ride home.

Just One More Sportfishing

August 25, 2007
Hello !! Friday was one of the best fluke fishing days ever aboard the "Just One More". Friday we had aboard the Mike Kochan charter for super fluke fishing. When it was all said and done, we had 15 keeper fluke to 7 lbs. !! One fish was 18", but the rest were between 4 lbs. and 7 lbs, with Mike himself landing the 7 lbr. that I personally weighed. And, it was 25 " long. We had 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.5 lb. fish!! What a days catch. CONGRATULATIONS MIKE ! We were fishing in about 17' of water down to 10'. Squid and spearing was the winning bait. We had shorts also, but only one sea robin. I can't wait to show you the pictures in future emails. Sooooooooooo the fluke fishing is not over with yet!! Who wants to go ? There are monster bluefish on the outside for who ever wants to go bluefish chumming. And now the false albies and bonito are starting to show up. We can also chum them up in the slick. Time for sore arms ! The following dates are available for charter: August 27, 29, 31. Sept. 1 [Saturday], 3, 7, 8,9, 11-14, and Sunday the 16th. Fluke , Bluefish, Striped Bass, Bonito, False Albies, Weakfish, and Blackfish are on the menu now and upcoming. www.just1morecharters.com 908-472-2684

August 20, 2007
HELLO, here's a trip for you. Monday, the John Zietsinger charter headed by Scott had a super day. It was a planned bluefish chumming day. We went down to the Shrewsbury Rocks and proceded to chum and use frozen bunker for the baits. When we got there we had no hits as the tide crapped out. The baits went right to the bottom with no sinkers and the bluefish did not hit! What a way to start. The next thing I know we have a double hook up. Great, the blues are starting to hit! Buuuuutt no, the first line came to the surface and I saw the tell tale dorsal fin of a striped bass fighting on the surface. We landed the fish and it measured 30". Not bad for a start. Meanwhile, the other angler, Jeff, was still fighting his fish and the drag was going out. The battle was still on! He finally brought the striper to the boat and I netted it. It was a full 40" plus long and weighed 19 lbs.!! The heck with the bluefish, but that was the last striper. It turned out to be Jeff's first striper ever. Pretty good first fish at 40". CONGRATULATIONS JEFF!! We moved to another spot to try and find some current and the blue fish hit the rest of the day. The fish were up to 10 lbs. and we released plenty. We had double and triple hook ups. In the meantime, one angler had his bait go to the bottom and he pulled up a 21" Sea Bass!! What a beauty with all the blue lines on his head. That was the largest Sea Bass ever caught on the boat, I only wish I had weighed it!! It turned out to be a super day of fishing. Yesterday we had aboard the Fred Richardson charter for a good pull of fluke. We had a good catch up to 22". Plenty of fish just missed the mark by less than a 1/2". And we had constant action all day. Open dates for August are: 23, 29, 30. September dates available are: 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11-14 ,16. I almost forgot to mention, we had out the Ernie Aponte charter Friday evening in the storm. Between downpoors and lightening flashes, we had striped bass drifting worms. So in September, the bass fishing will start heating up. 908-472-2684 www.just1morecharters.com

August 3, 2007
The weakfish are cominto the bay!! Today we had aboad the Jim Twaite charter for some weakfishing. They had only a fair pull of weakfish, but they were up to 21". The water temp. in the bay was 80.9 degrees. There is also tons of bait I read all day on my machine. Acres of peanut bunker. With that kind of bait in the water, the weakfish will invade soon and stay for some time. For the month of August, we can weakfish, bluefish chum, with bonito and false albies mixed in, as well as fluke. Open charter days for August are: 9, 12, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 25, 26. Once the weakfishing really gets hot, those dates will fill up quick. www.just1morecharters.com 908-472-2684

July 31, 2007
THE WEAKFISH ARE IN !!!! I have been receiving many reports of weakfish in the bay and have seen them being cleaned on the dock. They are here!! Not in the great numbers yet, but I am sure we could put together a good catch. August and September are the weakfish months in the Raritan Bay. Time to go weakfishing. Fluke fishing has been up and down with plenty of shorts and a lot of fish just under the legal limit. The Gary Root charter on Saturday had a good pull of fluke to 23". There were others up to 19" and plenty of action. Recently, the Bill Stephens charter from New Century Transportation had a banner day with monster bluefish. We chummed offshore for non stop action. When we arrived there in the fog, the blues were rollling and grayhounding on the surface chasing bait. We caught them on bunker chunks and top water lures. What action when a slammer hits the lure on the surface. Bill is either a very good fisherman or very lucky. He not only landed the largest striped bass on the season so far on the "Just One More", but now has also landed the largest bluefish at 16 lbs. !! Congratulations Bill !! We had action like that all day . 2 and 3 on at a time and Bill's charter was tuckered out reeling them in and we even went in a little early. Super action. They are there now and I am sure the bonito and false albies will be mixed in on the next trip as they are a little south and the water is very clean here. Here are some open dates for August, including some prine weekend dates. It would be best to call my cell to book. 908-472-2684. August, 2, 4 ,5, 7, 9,11, 12, 14, 16, 19. Once the word gets out about the weakfish being in, those dates will book up fast. Hope to see you fishing on the boat soon. Thankyou.

July 5, 2007
Fluke fishing is really starting to heat up. Actually it has been real good for a couple of weeks now. Friday we had aboard the Ray Lazzaro party. We had constant action all day with at least 100 short fluke thrown back. We also landed plenty of keepers to 19.5". Saturday, Bob Donahue had a limit out plus day on big SLAMMER bluefish. We chummed offshore and the action was non stop. We had bluefish on surface plugs all day long. And they loved the bunker chunks. The fish were between 4 lbs. and most were between 10 and 12 lbs. !! Monday we had aboard the Dave Carl charter from Jim Thorpe, PA. Another banner day with fluke. We had a real good pull of keepers to 20.5". Once again, plenty of action with the shorts. Many would have made last year's size limit at 16.5". It's tough to throw those back!! Just a few days left open in July if you want to charter and catch some tasty fluke. Tuesday the 24th. of July is open and you can make me work on my birthday that day. also the 26th., and 31st. That's all. Hopefully early in August, we will see the weakfish invasion. I can't wait !!

June 23, 2007
What a day for the Bill Stephens charter from New Century Transportation on Friday the 22nd. The crew had a full limit of striped bass despite some very heavy winds and rough seas. The smallest striper was 30" and went all the way up to the fish you see in the picture below of 31.5 lbs caught by Bill himself !! Bill also landed a 22 lbr. and plenty of others. Bluefish were also landed to 11 lbs. Bill is now in first place for the highly coveted "Just One More" award plaque for the largest striped bass caught in a season aboard the boat. CONGRATULATIONS BILL !! The next open dates to charter are: July 3, 4, 5, 12. Striped bass, bluefish chumming or fluke. 908-472-2684.

June 21, 2007
Fluke, fluke and more fluke. The fluke fishing aboard the "Just One More" has been pretty good. Tuesday we had a board the John Sietzinger party from Pa. They had a real good pull of fluke to 20" with plenty of shorts for constant action. Wednesday we had aboard Marty, Keith, and Joe. They had a similar day but the fish were up to 21". Those are some nice size fluke. Once again, plenty of action with a lot of fluke just missing the legal mark. The July Fluke Fishing Special is heating up. It consists of Fluke fishing every day in July. Up to 4 anglers per trip. 7 am to 1 pm. All bait included as usual. All for the reduced price of $ 350.00. Open dates remaining in July are: 1, 3, 4, 5, 12, 17, 24, 26, 29. THAT IS IT. Time to put some tasty fluke fillets on the table. Prime date open this weekend. This Saturday , the 23rd. is open due to a cancellation of a charter. Striped bass, bluefish or fluke. It would be best to call my cell to book it. 908-472-2684. A rare opportunity!!

The biggest bass of the seson was caught aboard the 'Just One More" Friday. We had aboard the Bill Stephens charter from New Century Transportation. The fish was landed by Nicky Disarro. It measured 41" and weighed 25 lbs. It was caught on a very small chunk of bunker in 20 feet of water and the water temp. was 63.2 degrees. We also had other bass and plenty of bluefish. Saturday, Bob Abel was aboard for a bluefish bonanza. We caught bluefish the whole time with 2-3 fish on constantly. It did slow down a little during slack tide with one on all the time !! The fish were any where between 3 and almost 10 lbs.
SATURDAY ALERT !!! Due to a cancellation, Saturday the 23rd. of June is now available. Now is the time to get in on the bass action on a prime weekend before the fishing slows down. Or we can fluke as that fishery is doing very well. Don't miss out on a prime date. Call my cell at: 908-472-2684 to reserve.
Two thirds of all the Fluke Fishing Special dates are booked. Think about booking soon to catch your tasty fluke fillets.

HELLO, DESPITE SOME LOUSY CONDITIONS BEYOND OUR CONTROL LAST WEEK, WE STILL HAD SOME GOOD TRIPS. WE HAD THE ALGEA BLOOM IN THE BAY. IT WAS LIKE DRIVING THRU A ROOT BEER FLOAT. DIRTY BROWN WATER WITH FOAM ON TOP. THE WATER TEMP. AROUND THE BLOOM WAS 75 DEGREES. AFTER THE BLOOM, THE WATER WAS IN THE LOW 60'S. AND THE ALGEA WENT FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND PREVENTED EVERYONE'S FISHFINDER FROM WORKING. IT WAS SO THICK YOU COULD NOT READ THE BOTTOM! THEN WE HAD THE FULL MOON, WHICH SLOWED THINGS UP. BUT LIKE I SAID, WE DID LAND SOME NICE BASS. MONDAY, THE DON MOSER CHARTER HAD A FULL LIMIT OF STRIPERS TO 38". WEDNESDAY, JUAN WAS OUT AND WE MANAGED A FEW STRIPERS TO 38" AGAIN. WEDNESDAY EVENING WE HAD OUT BRUCE AND ONLY MANAGED ONE STRIPER TO 38" AND SOME BLUE FISH. FRIDAY, WE HAD AN OPEN TRIP. LINDA SEIP FROM PA. CAUGHT THE ONLY KEEPER STRIPER AT 33". THINGS STARTED LOOKING UP ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON WITH THE GREG HALASZ CHARTER FROM HALASZ ELECTRIC. WE MANAGED 8 STRIPERS TO 32" AND MORE BLUEFISH. BLUEFISH BOB DONAHUE WAS OUT SATURDAY AND WAS SINGING THE BLUES AS THAT IS ALL WE CAUGHT. HOPEFULLY THE BASS FISHING WILL PICK UP NOW AFTER THE STORM AND ON THE DOWN SIDE OF THE MOON. SOME TRIPS WE WERE MAKING FIVE DROPS WITH THE ANCHOR TO FIND THE BASS AND THEY DID JUST NOT BITE. THE NEXT OPEN BOAT DATE FOR STRIPERS IS AN AFTERNOON TRIP ON JUNE 20TH. 2:30PM TO 6:30PM. CALL TO RESERVE YOUR SINGLE SPOT. WE STILL NEED 1-2 ANGLERS FOR THAT TRIP. 908-472-2684. THE JULY FLUKE FISHING SPECIAL IS FILLING UP!! Jenny-Lee Sportfishing

capt's jimmy gahm and sean carton took capt charles mittlestaadt of salt creek,ny and friends on an overnighter to the toms canyon sunday august 19th. upon arriving at the toms capt jimmy was trolling for just a few minutes when he was called in by good friends steve matthews and billy smith on the "pepper". what happend next was a tuna fishermans dream. jimmy mada a few passes and all of a sudden up come the mother load, 9 rods go off screaming, it's the wolf pack. jimmy has nine bigeyes on, one comes off right away and two more come unglued within a few minutes, but 6 stay on for an hour. unfortunatley with five anglers and some large fish we only boated three out of the first 6. not to worry, the fish are boiling behind the boat and sean hand feeds out the ballys once again and wham, three more on. we landed three more for a total of 6 bigeyes to 175lbs. in all of our years, this was without a doubt the most exciting blitz we have ever been involved in. after total exhaustion the guys anchored up and had some grub. with little effort they put another 7 yellowfins to 70 lbs in the boat as well as 3 swordfish bites retaining 1 for the table. we can't thank steve and billy enough other than returning the favor. the fbigeyes ate just about everything in out spread, can't wait to go again.

capt's kevin gerrity and dave bender took steve zakowski of roselle sons paul and mike as well as frank nowak, john haley and dan krulick on an overnighter to toms canyon saturday august 18th. we had to push the trip back till park, his two3pm due to the hard northwest winds, so we only chunked. we hit the fish right over the head as within the first 20 minutes we had nine bites. the guys were not quite ready for that fast a flurry as we went 4 for 9 on 60-70 pound yellowfins. however, as the night went on they did an outstanding job on some nasty fish. we wound up boating another dozen fish for a total of 16. we also lost another 10-12 fish. the ride home was awesome in flat calm seas and the guys had a blast as did kevin and myself. i think we've hooked these guys for the future.

captains rick petschauer and dave bender took paul kelly of parsippany and friends on an overnighter to the hudson canyon tuesday august 14th. the trolling remained slow but at 5pm we had a large yellowfin crash the spread and the "beak" was in for a fight. after about a 15 minute battle the fish hit the deck. we set up for the chunk at dusk and caught a 70lb yellowfin right away. the rest of the evening was slow, but at 1am the fish were on the feed. the guys boated 18 large yellowfins and lost at least another 10. the guys did an awesome job with these bruisers, and as always it was a blast fishing with paul and his pals. i want to thank steve MR BIG magenta for his help.

capts jimmy gahm and sean carton took jon baum and family to the hudson canyon for an overnigther on sunday august 12th. after loading the boys tackle( 3 hours) we pushed off for the hudson. the trolling was very slow as we boated one forty pound yellowfin and one mahi. the chunk on the other hand was red hot. the baums kept 9 yellowfins for the table and released another dozen, they are to be commended for their respect for our recources.

Captain Dave Bender reports:
capt's jimmy gahm and dave bender took ron marinelli sr&jr as well as neighbor mike hart of phillipsburg,nj on a day trip to the hudson canyon saturday july 28th ,2007. the morning was quite action packed as we boated 2 40 pound longfins as well as four 55-60 pound yellowfins. ron sr was on a much larger yellowfin for about 20 minutes, but the hook pulled close to the boat. the afternoon was quite the opposite as we boated some small mahi and missed a few tunas. most of the action was on reel seat gerry garcia bars and ballyhoo. we were very surprised at the lack of boats fishing in the canyon for a late july day with a great forecast.

07/14/07
Captain Dave Bender reports:
capt's jimmy gahm and dave bender took mastropoli plumbing and john hill from bethlehem,pa on a day trip down to masseys canyon. leaving the dock at 11pm friday night we had a 6 hour ride to the grounds. capt jimmy put out the first bait and it was ripped out of his hand by a bluefin. unfortunatly he never got hooked. we boated a 60 pound bluefin and released two others. the fishing was not what we had expected as the boat traffic was a problem. three times we had boats hook up in our slick trolling 30 yards off our stern, not sporting. we had a very nice ride home and the guys had a great time.

06/24/07
Captain Dave Bender reports:
had jaimie borenious and marty russo of emerson out for the last day of mako mania. we fished the same genearal area from the previous day and set up at 8am. at 8:30 a rod goes off and a nice arial display, we had a 135-140 lb mako in the box. we had blue sharks the remainder of the day and did not come in the money on this fish either. jaimie and marty will be back in the fall for a canyon trip.

06/23/07
Captain Dave Bender reports:
took john montillo sr&jr of lyndhurst,nj to fish the mako mania tournament. we fished 44 miles east of manasquan and had action all day with the blue sharks. at 2pm the right one was on but not for long, after about three minutes the hok had pulled. at 4pm the fight was on again and we boated a154lb mako. the fish was not heavy enough to take any money, but we all had a great day on the water. the boys are returning in august and october for tuna action.

06/22/07
Captain Dave Bender reports:
had steve raines of stony point,ny out for the jcsa mako fever tornament. we fished 54 miles southeast of manasquan and had action all day with blue sharks. at 4pm a mako hit and the fight was on. we boated a 125lb mako and headed in in a rough 30 knot west wind. we did not make the 7pm weighin, however, the 125lb would not have held up. all in all we all had a great time fishing together. steve and the boys are returing this fall for some tuna action.

Capt. Darren reports:
Lou Forenzi and freinds were aboard the Megan Beth for a Bluefish/Fluke combo. Fishing the Mud Bouy was a slow pick on blues as they were hitting short and not consistant. By 11:30 we filled a cooler of Blues and went Fluke fishing. Stopping at two spots we caught 14 nice keepers to 4.5 lbs and a dozen throw backs.Great day on the water till we headed home and the rain came very heavy.

8/14/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Mike Larkin and crew from AT&T were aboard the Megan Beth for a day of bluefishing. Fishing at the Mud Bouy was a slow pick as the bluefish were leader shy,we had a fish with monoleaders. Cacthing enough bluefish we stopped at some rocky bottom on the way home, and caught 10 keeper fluke up to 4lbs and a dozen throw backs. It was a great day on the water.

8/13/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Had the Mary Lou Crew out for the best fluke trip of the year! With 3 guys fishing we ended the day with 21 keepers and the smallest fish was 2 1/2 pounds, with the largest going 7 pounds. We had several fish in the 4 to 5 pound range. Great conditons and a beautiful day on the water!!! We still have dates available for some great fluke fishing in August 973-809-9736 or www.maryloucrew.com

8/08/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Had the Mary Lou Crew back out for a day of what started out as Bluefishing, we started at the Farms but there was no bite. We decided to switch over to some fluking back up in the Channels. Had a few shorts and a couple keepers before the drift picked up. We made a move to the Sandy Hook Channel and on the way came across a large school of nice blues and proceeded to catch all the blues the charter wanted.

8/07/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Ralph Betcher and friends were aboard the Megan Beth for a day of Fluke fishing.Stopping at the reef at first it was a slow drift and slow pick. By 10:30 we got a little breeze and we picked 14 nice keepers and just as many shorts as well as a few Sea Bass. A couple of the family members were not feeling well and we were back at the dock by noon.

8/05/07
Capt. Darren reports:
The Megan Beth was back up to the Mud Bouy with John Mackston and crew aboard. Heading up to the North in a stiff NE wind in the morning by afternoon the seas layed down. Fishing was steady but no blitz,as the jigs outfished the baits today. By days end plenty of bluefish were caught and most released.

8/04/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Had the Cole Printing boys and their kids onboard today. We started out in the Sandy Hook Channel, but after two drifts and no fish we decided to make a move to the Ambrose. It turned out to be a good choice. Although the fishing started out slow while we waited for the right drift, once it started the bite turned on. We ended the day with 9 nice keepers and another handful of shorts. The largest fish was 5lbs. But the highlight of the trip was when one of the anglers hooked into something BIG which at first I thought was a striper as the line raced to the surface. But to mine and everyone onboard surprise a 85 to 100 pound thresher went sky rocketing into the air!! After a 15 minute battle and backing down on the fish to get line back and several more air shows the light fluke hook straightend just before landing him and off into the deep of the Ambrose. WHAT A SHOW FOR EVERYONE!!!

7/31/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Had the Mary Lou Crew Back out again for some more Fluke action. Started off between the channel for the last of the incoming tide. With live snappers and fresh bait we had none stop action. Not as many keepers today, but we made up for in action. Had several fish in the 3 pond range. For a half day trip with young children it was a nice day.

7/28/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Back out today to fish the Middletown Elks Fluke t-ment. We had pretty decent fishing in the morning, but the afternoon was just horriable. We ended the day with a 7 pounder another at 4 pounds and a few in the 3 to 3 1/2 pound range. At the fillet table we ended with a dozen keepers and several bags of nice fillets. No fish big enough to put us on the board for the t-ment.

7/22/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Back out for another shot at the flat ones. Today was much better then yesterday, but still had to work real hard for the fish. The charter finished out the day with 12 keepers and a nice couple bags of fillets. Conditions still were not ideal with wind blowing hard in the morning. Till next trip. Have some open dates for the best month of Fluke fishing so give us a call 973-809-9736.

7/21/07
Capt. Darren reports:
The Mary Lou Crew was out for another day of fluke fishing. But today the fluke got the best of us. We fished everywhere and I mean everywhere, but could not get the fish going. Picked a few fish at each spot but nothing to right home about. We finished the day we a few keepers and six seabass. Not a good day with wind against the tide all day. Back out again in the morning hopefully things will change.

7/07/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Spent another day on the Mary Lou Crew catching the flat ones. Started off down the beach, but due to a lack of wind there was no drift. Caught a few fish and decided to make a move back up North. It turned out to be a good choice. We ended the day with a dozen keepers and also added another dozen of nice Seabass. Had a lot of fish in the 16 to 16 3/4 inch bracket that had to go back in.

7/03/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Had the Mary Lou Crew out for some hot fluke action. We fished a few differnet spots and had fish on every drop. Largest fish went 5lbs. We ended the day with 15 keepers and a ton a shorts. We actually ended the day with only a few pieces of bait left.

6/23&24/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Took a weekend off from chartering and brought the boat down to Brielle to fish the JCSA Mako fever and Mako Mania. Saturday we had good fishing with 6 blue sharks and 1 thresher that weighed in at 220lbs at Hoffmans. Back out on Sunday to the same area. Not as much action as on Saturday, but we did hook up with another fish and after an hour fight we boated another thresher this one a little bigger and weighed in at 250lbs. No makos so no money, but we did have a a great time.

Capt. Darren reports:
John Dugan and party caught bass in the morning with about 25 being boated. Decided to try a little fluking in the afternoon and did very well. The action was non-stop and several guys even limited out. There are plenty of openings for the week of 6/4, so call captain Ray at 732-803-6276 for a reservation.

5/29/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Capt. Darren was back out with a group from the Beaver Creek Farm. Started out in the Ocean and made one drop and had fish on pretty quick. The fish were small today, but we did manage to put enough keepers in the box. Made a move down to the rocks and trolled for a little. Had one fish that went around 20 lbs. Ran back into the bay but nothing but bluefish. Beautiful day on the water. Mary Lou Crew still has some dates open for the best Striper fishing time in the month of June. So give us a call!

Capt. Darren reports:
Had the Mary Lou Crew back out for the Stripers with a group from Bergan County. Well I have to say I out smarted myself today. I told some friends were to go and I actually went there first thing in the morning but did not like what I saw and never put a line in. Well BIG mistake the fish were there and my buddies beat them up. By the time we ran back to them the bite had slowed and we only put two keepers in the box and tons of blue fish. That how it goes!

5/26/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Had the Mary Lou Crew out for another day of Striper fishing with the Dave Foss and friends from Pats Tavern. We made one drop and had a fish on within 15 minutes. The biggest fish of the day was 33 lbs and a few others in the mid 20's. Had to deal with a ton of blue fish. Not a bad trip for only 4 hours.

5/21/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Had the guys from Shamrock Design oout for our 5th trip in a row. Started off with bait and had a 36 inch fish on within half hour of setting up then that was it. Wind against the tide made ffor tuff clamming. Left and went back to wear we had them the day before trolling and read all the fish there, but they would not eat. We scratched away all day and ended up with 4 nice size fish and again got covered up in bluefish.

5/20/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Had the George Gibson crew out again with us on Sunday. Started out clamming and had a great bite on shorts only putting two in the box and releasing a lot. Left and went on the troll after a call from Mark on the Drop Off. We finished the day with a full cooler of Big Bass and enough bluefish to fill the second cooler.

5/19/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Had the Mike Gates group out from Rockaway, NJ and got a late start due to a ball of rope around the starboard engine prop. Once out there we fished a couple of our favorite drops and put a decent catch together. We also got covered up by blues. Nice day out there.

5/17/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Had the Mary Lou Crew out for a half day of trolling. Went up in the reach and had several nice fish, and all the blues we wanted. The group was very pleased and it was just enough time before the wind picked up and the fish stopped biting. Not a bad day on the water.

Capt. Darren reports:
Had a group out on the Mary Lou Crew for a day of Striper fishing from Sussex County. We fished three different spots and had fish on two of the three. More shorts then keepers today, but did manage to bring fish home. Conditions were not the great today.

4/28/07
Capt. Darren reports:
Had the Mary Lou Crew out with a group from Morris County. We fished a half day and caught about 20 shorts, but no keepers. The water all around was cold and DIRTY. We started out at Romar Shoal and then went out to the Ocean and same fish in both spots. The fish were hitting real light and then would drop the baits. Till next time!

T S SPORTFISHING CHARTERS

05/02/07
Captain Al Hofmann reports:
The Fred Polig and friends from Bellmawr, New Jersey took one last shot at the departing winter flounder and had a nice catch of two dozen keepers up to two pounds. As has been the case over the past few weeks, there were very few throwbacks, the fish were fat and several were over 15 inches. We ended the day hunting striped bass but unfortunately at slack tide. There were good fish marks on the sounder but no one was eating.

04/28/07
Captain Al Hofmann reports:
The Mike Gates charter from Rockaway and Tenafly, New Jersey, went searching for striped bass in Raritan Bay. After an hour of snagging fresh bunker the group set up in the area of the reach channel, fishing both bunker and fresh clams. Only a few undersize stripers were caught and released before the group headed for Sandy Hook Bay for flounder fishing on the incoming tide. The group boated eight keepers and the high hook was Evan Silva, 8 1/2 years old, from Tenafly. We learned a few new techniques from Evan today! Way to go Evan!!

04/25/07
Captain Al Hofmann reports:
The charter of Tom Sevino, family and friends from New York were taken to Sandy Hook Bay for a full day of fishing for winter flounder. Six anglers caught a total of 47 keepers, several over three pounds. This was a remarkable day of fishing given the very small number of throwbacks - 3!! - and a large percentage of the keepers fifteen inches or better.

Canyon Runner Sport Fishing

August 28-29 - Capt. Mark DeBlasio and Capt. Jerry Lanzeratti had the Fred Giordano and Dan Portanova charter out Monday to Tuesday and went right to the South Toms and only pulled 2 yellowfin on the chunk all night. With a disappointed charter they stuck out the trolling to try to nail a few more fish and they did. Trolling right on the numbers we've been fishing for big-eye all week he had the wolfpack come up and eat 5 baits including Canyon Runner 9" purple/black spreader bars, jets, and ballyhoo. 4 big-eye came tight and the fight was on. It took the charter close to one hour but they ended up putting all four in the boat. As the last fish was darted Capt. Jerry dropped back a ballyhoo into the pattern and jigged it twice and another big-eye came up and exploded on the bait and that too was put in the boat. Four of them were from 130-140 pounds but one was close to 200!!!
August 28-29 - Capt. Phil Dulanie and Mark DeCabia had the Todd Polumbo charter down in the South Toms Canyon and got a couple fish to the boat quick on the chunk and thought it was going to be another memorable night. In fact it was a night to forget as they then just pick 2 more fish the rest of the night under horrible conditions with wind again tide and all the baits running to the bow. Up on the troll in the morning to pull a couple more fish for the charter they struck out and came home with only 4 yellowfin. Check out www.canyonrunner.com for all the pictures

August 26-27 - Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia were back at it on overnighters this week after the MA500 and got right back into the grove although it took some time. They left the dock at 8am with the Dr. John Bednar charter and headed to the Toms Canyon to get another shot at those big-eyes. Their shot never came as it looks like that bite has slowed down. Trolling from Noon to 7pm they only took only longfin. They moved down the bank towards the Carteret to look for a place to set up for the night and all the spots were taken until they decided to drop the hook in 600 feet of water close to the Carteret. They started the night with a slow pick putting another longfin in the boat and 9 yellowfin by midnight. From 2am to 5am the bite picked up and they caught another 11 yellowfin. They kept 12 yellowfin and released the rest. They were getting most of their bites on live squid that they were catching right on the bottom. They drop down a heavily weighted string of 5 squid jigs to the bottom and just reel up slowly and are catching three or four big 12" squid a time and using those as baits. They also jigged a few of the yellowfin as well. The ended the night with 20 yellowfin total.
August 27-28 - Capt. Mark DeBlasio and mates Tom Kelly and Ty McGowan took the Jess Lubert and Howard Popkin charter out Sunday/Monday on his fourth overnighter in a row and ran straight to the Carteret Canyon hoping to find the fish sliding down the bank with the water. However, such was not the case as he did not get a bite on the troll and by mid-night only had one yellowfin in the boat. He pulled up and ran up the bank towards Phil and set up at in 590 feet of water and got them going. He ended the night with 9 yellowfin in total losing a bunch. His bites came on live squid and hammered diamond jigs.

While two-thirds of the Canyon Runner crew was down in Cape May at the Mid-Atlantic $500,000, the rest of the Canyon Runner crew lead by Capt Mark DeBlasio with mates Capt. Tom Kelly, Capt. Evan Millas, Chris Hempstead and Ty McGowan held up the fort in Pt. Pleasant getting in three overnighters and just crushing the fish with 5 Big-Eyes and 50 Yellowfin and Longfin during those trips.
August 24-25 - Capt. Mark DeBlasio had the Richard O'Day charter out with mate Chris Hempstead and Ty McGowan Friday to Saturday and ran right back to his number from the day before to try to get another big-eye before the night bite. He started trolling at 7pm and by 7:15 he was hooked with three of them with one on a Canyon Runner blue/white jet and two on a ballyhoo blue/white moldcraft chugger combo. He burnt one off at the boat, pulled the hook on another but boated the third that was right around 170 pounds. He set up down the line a little from the Toms towards the South Toms in 600 feet of 78 degree water for the night. He had over 20 bites at night both on 60 and 80 pound flouro and our hammered diamond jigs. In total the charter chunked 12 yellowfin through out the night releasing a few. These yellowfin were all nice size fish in the 40-70 pound range.
August 23-24 - Capt. Mark Deblasio ran to the northeast corner of the Toms Canyon with the Paul Pedretti charter on Thursday morning and put her on the troll looking for the big-eyes that have been biting their heads off since Sunday. He found them when 5 came up and ate ballyhoo and Canyon Runner purple/black spreader bars and green machines. The fight lasted some 45 minutes and he decked 3 of them in the 130 to 150 pound class. The big-eyes were there and so too the bait so why leave. He set up right there for the night and chunked 30 yellowfin through out the night with constant action all night long. Live squid and sardines produced best but so too did anyone working a hammered diamond jig whenever the fish came thru. Just before daybreak he put out a couple spinning rods to play with the tuna on and don’t you know a 125 pound sword eats it instead. They had it within 10 feet from the harpoon when it broke off.
August 19-20 - Capt. Mark missed out on the biggest big-eye bite in decades by only a few hours as the Jenny Lee and the Pepper both out of Manasquan Inlet boated 15 big-eyes between the two boats. They called us in but since Mark was doing a turn around overnighter Sunday to Monday with the Mark Hable charter he did not get back out to the Toms Canyon until 7pm but by 7:15 had one on. He put the 130 pounder in the boat caught on a ballyhoo and then went right to the chunk. It got nasty at night which hurt the fishing a little but they managed to pull 6 nice big yellowfin on the chunk. Sardines and squid were the bait of choice. See our pictures on our website if you have a chance.

Two-thirds of the Canyon Runner crew had an eventful week down at the Mid-Atlantic $500,000 while the other third lead by Capt. Mark DeBlasio kept the home fires burning back at Pt. Pleasant. Down in Cape May we split the crew up between two boats. Adam LaRosa, Brad Burgess, Billy Rowan and John Timken were fishing on Ken Avon’s Due Course and were targeting white marlin. Capt. Phil Dulanie with Mike Zajac and Capt. Mark DeCabia had Damian Romeo (who chartered the Canyon Runner for the week) out looking for big-eyes. Both boats found what they wanted and plenty of them just not ones big enough for the money. On Monday only the Due Course fished and we headed to the Spencer in nice tight 6-8 footers with a 20-25 knot northeast breeze. At around 8am the wind picked up to over 30 knots and the seas up to 10 foot - it was looking to be virtually unfishable. When we set out the lines at 8:30am we could only get four baits out but with some luck on our side the wind let up and by 10am we had out our full pattern of two double Offshore Innovation dredges and two 9” Canyon Runner rainbow squid teaser bars (no hooks due to tournament rules) and 6 ballyhoo baits. On the dredges we had Offshore Innovations Hologra artificial baits on the inside of the bars with mullet on the outside. The Hologra baits work unbelievable well and we had most of our whites come in on the dredges first they turn off to the squid teaser bars and pile on the naked ballyhoo trolled right between them. We trolled Penn International 16VS spooled with 30 pound Momoi and the combination was great. We trolled this pattern all week with the ballyhoo rigged on 8/0 Eagle Claw 2004 ELFcircle hooks and 80 pound fluorocarbon with wind-on leaders. Half the baits were naked and half had moldcraft blue/white little hookers over top. We also trolled one horse ballyhoo with an Ilander deep down the middle. Day 1 was by far out best day seeing 4 whites and catching every one of them. The third white of the day was measured and came in at 63” so off she swam. Day 2 for us was Thursday and we went back to the Spencer and had the bait but only raised one white. We hooked her as well but immediately seeing it was small handed off the rod per tournament rules and lost her on the switch. That will be the last time we every switch anglers again as it cost us points!!! Also on that day we had what would have easily been the tournament winning big-eye come up and engulf 4 squid off the center chain of the teaser bar and scream off line at 40 pounds of drag before the bar was pulled out of its mouth since we were fishing them without hooks. We dropped back a pitch bait and reeled up on the deep bait with the horse but it never came up again. Day 3 we set up between the Spencer and Wilmington on the 100 fathom line and by 10:30 had a white up in the pattern and hooked up and had her to the boat in three minutes (Ken Avon is not soft on the throttles and backs up with the best of them!!!). We billed this one and measured her as well. She came in at 64” and again off she swam. That was our last bite of the tournament. In total we saw only 6 whites but hooked them all jumping off one and releasing 5. Not bad for a bunch of tuna fisherman. Speaking of tuna fisherman, the Canyon Runner with Phil, Mark and Mike fished her first day of the tournament on Wednesday and only saw a couple tuna and missed two whites. On Thursday they release a nice 80 pound yellowfin (that they will always regret releasing) and missed two whites. But on their last day their luck changed. Fishing Penn International 80VSWs on both trolling rods and stand-up rods and Penn International 70VSWs all on stand-up rods with 130 pound Momoi they trolled all big lures (12” Mako Jets, Moldcraft Chuggers, and horse and select ballyhoo with Ilander lures) looking for that big big-eye or blue marlin as was the wish of Damien. The problem this week was we knew where the big-eyes were but could not get there until Friday due to the relentless northeast wind. But on Friday they got there and got ‘em. They made it to the northeast corner of the Toms Canyon just after lines in and spent the next few hours watching other boats pick big-eyes all around them without a touch on the Canyon Runner. But at 11am the Northstar 6100i lit up with red marks all over the screen, Phil thought the recorder was malfunctioning until he look back into the pattern, what he saw was big-eyes explode on everything. Damien made short work of each fish hooked on the Penn 80VSWs fighting them out of the chair. Since they were not big fish he boated the first two in less than 5 minutes. They had two other shots during the day and in total boated 5 big-eyes. Unfortunately none of them were big enough for the money with the biggest only 139 pounds - but the combined weight put them in Third Place for most points. If they weighed that yellowfin from Thursday they would have placed second for points. Damien won a beautiful Guy Harvey print and is already signed up to fish the MA500 for next year. Congratulations Capt. Phil, Capt. Mark, Mike and particularly Damien Romeo!!!!! Now back to chunking!!!!!

Sorry for the late reports as I have been away at the MA500 all last week (full report to follow but we did OK with the boat I was on going 5 for 6 with white marlin and the Canyon Runner with Capt. Phil Dulanie, Capt. Mark DeCabia and mate Mike Zajac nailing 5 big-eyes on the last day to place for third most points for tuna – again full report to follow shortly). Hopefully some of the attached pictures make up for such late reports from last weeks trips.
August 15-16 - Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the Tom Mallan charter out to the 100-square and ended up the line towards the Dip with Phil to avoid the crowd. He did 14 yellowfin at night and a friend up on the troll at the 100-Square in the morning hooked 3 big-eyes boating one so Mark stayed to troll. Mark was right on the 100-square and trolled until 10:50am and only picked one more yellowfin and was going to pull lines out at 11am when with 2 minutes to go he got his bite. 4 big-eyes came up on two 12" purple/black Canyon Runner spreader bars, 1 rainbow green machine bar and one green/yellow 6" Canyon Runner jet. The two on the 12" squid bars did not come tight but the other two did. One was hooked on a Penn International 16VSX and fought for over 1.5 hours before the Poon Harpoon landed home. The second came in quicker but was bigger at around 150 pounds. The one on the 16VSX was around 135.
August 15-16 - Capts Phil Dulanie and Mark DeCabia with mate Mike Zajac took the Mike Lilonski charter out on the Canyon Runner for their fourth turn around overnighter in a row last Tuesday to Wednesday. Leaving the inlet at 3:30pm they ran right to the 100-Square but found it packed with boats. A call into Adam LaRosa on the SAT and a review of the water temperature charts and confirmation of a good bite continuing at the Dip they decided to just move a few miles up the line to east and settled in. They had tuna on immediately putting 6 in the boat by 9pm. The bite continued at a pick until about 1am when all hell broke losse and everything in the ocean (manta rays, porpoies, squid, mackrel, and yellowfin) appeared right behind the boat. They quickly limited out and went into release mode. The charter fought a total of 39 yellowfin bringing 31 to boat - keeping their limit and releasing the rest. The action came on 60 pound flouro with sardines and fresh dead squid the best bait and over 10 fish coming on our hammered diamond jigs.

Adam LaRosa reports:
August 13-14 - Capt. Mark DeBlasio mate Ty McGowan and Capt. Tom Kelly took the Neil Eschenbrenner charter out Monday to Tuesday. Leaving the dock at 2:30pm they ran right to the 100-Square of the Hudson and set up for the night bite. They had fish on immediately deploying sardines, live squid, butters and on hammered diamond jigs. Fishing in 600 feet water they had fish on the entire time from 10pm to 2pm putting 10 fish in the boat and losing a bunch. After 2pm the fish came on real strong and they had non-stop action filling the boat with 18 fish and releasing 19 for a total catch of 37 yellowfin. These fish are all big in the 70-90 pound range and we are taking them on 60 and 80 pound flouro with 12/0 circle hooks and the our smaller 6 and 8 oz hammered diamond jigs with both treble hooks on the working rods and circle hooks on the rods left in the rigger for the night. The real excitement for the night came at 4:30am when a 700+ pound mako bite a 70 pound yellowfin in half right at the boat. The crew teased the mako with the other half of the yellowfin for 5 minutes right at the back of the boat until a suitable shark rig was ready. They then pulled the half tuna out of the water cut off a piece and feed it to the mako on a Penn International 50VSW. The mako, which was easily as long as the width of the 55' Hooked Up 2 (which is 12 foot wide at the transom) quickly engulfed the chunk and the fight was on. 1 hour into the battle with daylight upon them but also rough seas the mako somehow parted the 275# wire and the fight was over. Mate Tom Kelly caught a 688# Mako last year in California and he guarantees that this one was much bigger. We'll go with 700+ as a conservative number but it doesn't really matter as we did not come close to getting her. In fact, Mark and I talked about it afterwords and in the end it is better to let her swim away free anyway and breed as what the heck was he going to do with 700 pounds of mako when he got back to the dock with only 2 hours on land before turning right around and going back out for another overnighter. It would have been nice to catch her but it is just a nice, if not more, that she is still out there. August 13-14 - Capts. Phil Dulanie and Mark DeCabia and mate Mike Zajac took the Brian Benson charter out on the Canyon Runner Monday to Tuesday. Leaving the dock at 2:30pm they ran right to the 100-Square of the Hudson and set up for the night bite. They had fish immediately on sardines, live squid and a ton on hammered diamond jigs. Fishing in 600 feet water they had fish on the entire time from 10pm to 1pm but then when the wind came up they swung into the deep and sitting at 675 feet of water they did not get a bite. They moved back up on the bank in 600 feet and immediately got into yellowfin again. The ended the night with 17 in the boat and released another 5 fish for a total of 22

Adam LaRosa reports:
Saturday/Sunday - Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia ran the Canyon Runner offshore for a chunking trip Saturday night with the Frank Cardaci charter from ASA Apple. They waited at the dock for the wind to stop blowing and ran right to Lindenchol. Leaving late on Saturday and going out slow due to the remaining swells left over they arrived just before night fall and dropped the hook in 400 feet of water settling back in 450 feet. They had a quick bite immediately putting a nice 70 pound yellowfin in the boat but did not get another shot until 5am. At 5am just before pulling the hook they put a 40-pounder in the boat and then the yellowfin came under the boat in plain sight. In the next 15 minutes they were able to put another 5 nice yellowfin in the boat on live squid and one a jig. They pulled the hook at 6am and came right home. Sunday/Monday - Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the Joe Terranova charter out on Sunday to Monday and ran to the Hudson Canyon. Capt Mark and Adam noted that the bite down in the Linden was just not that great all around (while Phil had 7 yellowfin 8 other boats caught nothing), there were reports of boats doing well in the Dip and the same water in the Dip was just offshore of the Hudson so the decision was made to head that way. On his way into the Hudson he heard of a slow pick at the tip and ran up that way only to watch a couple fish caught but not on his boat. He ran down to the east elbow and trolled out to the edge and dropped in for the night bite but not before releasing a nice white marlin that ate a ballyhoo. He picked a few yellowfin up unitl 2:30am when it broke wide open. Sardines and live squid on 80 pound flouro accounted for many of the fish but so too did our Canyon Runner hammered jigs with heavy duty swivels and 4X strength treble hooks - taking over 8 of the yellowfin. He finished the night 21 for 35 and many of the yellowfin were in the 70 pound class or a little better. He was on his way home at first light. Sunday/Monday - Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia with mate Mike Zajac took the Jim Kelly charter out to the Hudson as the bite in the Lindenchol was not as great as expected and they figured the water on the SAT shots looked good so off they went. They pulled into the Tip in on a very slow pick on the troll and caught nothing. They trolled down the west wall without a touch and set up at 26176/43075 for the night bite. They picked a fish an hour putting one 52" sword in the boat and releasing a barely legal one and also boated 2 yellowfin around 80 pounds. However, after mid-night they did not get another touch. When Capt. Mark on the HU2 got them going thick around 3:30am they pulled the hook and ran over to the 100-square but missed out on the bite only missing one yellowfin on the jig when the hook pulled.

08/09-10/07
Adam LaRosa reports:
Capt. Mark DeBlasio and mate Eddie Farrel took the Bob Petro charter out to sneak in an overnighter before the blow Thursday to Friday and ran right to the northeast corner of the Lindenchol and dropped the hook. They chunked hard all night without a touch until 2:30am when the fish came on. Jigging with hammered diamond jigs with trebles and baiting them on sardines and live squid put yellowfin on the decks. They fought over 25 yellowfin putting 14 in the boat. All the yellowfin were between 60-70 pounds. They are on there way home at first light. This trip was Eddie Farrel’s last trip of the 2007 season as he is off to Duke University for his masters in Marine Biology – we like our Canyon Runner members to be well educated! It also may be the last trip of his life as he just recently got engaged. Good luck on both accounts Eddie – you will be missed!!!!

Adam LaRosa reports:
Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia with mate Mike Zajac took the Elliot Braun and John Post charter out on a Sunday/Monday overnighter and got on the fish early. Trolling the Carteret at they started the day with a 4 bagger of longfin and added a nice 65-pound white marlin. They caught all afternoon on the troll and ended the troll with 6 longfin and 2 nice 80-90 pound yellowfin on the troll. All the bites came right around the northeast corner of the Carteret with most of the fish on 9” Canyon Runner Rainbow squid spreader bars. With all those fish on the troll why move so they set up on the chunk right there and had 60-70 pound yellowfin under the boat immediately. By 10pm they already had 4 more yellowfin in the boat on the chunk and by 11am chucked another 10 more yellowfin and then went into release mode. They stopped fishing for 2 hours during torrential lightening storms and then released another 15 yellowfin all in the 60-70 pound class from 2am to 4am before calling it a night and coming home early. The first bunch of fish were caught on sardines on 60-pound flouro and most of the rest on live squid on 80-pound flouro. They also jigged a total of 4 yellowfin on our hammered diamond jigs. Total for the trip was 8 tuna on the troll and 29 on the chunk plus the white.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Capt. Mark DeBlasio and Capt. Tom Kelly and mate Ty McGowan had the Todd Balestro charter out Sunday to Monday and ran right to where we had them Saturday on the west wall of the Hudson Canyon by the letters but working that area for hours only produced 2 yellowfin on Canyon Runner green machine bars. Getting a call from Capt. Dulanie who had just come into the Hudson at 3pm he ran up to the bombs and dropped them in just south of that area and immediately nailed a 3 bagged of nice yellowfin in the 50 pound class on bars and ballyhoo. Working that area until 8pm just before dark he got a 4 bagger of yellowfin and set up for the night with 9 nice yellowfin in the box. His night time was actually a little eventful as a 53 inch sword grabbed the sword bait down 200 feet and was quickly subdued and boated. Up on the troll in the morning he picked 2 more yellowfin again right by the Bombs and again on our spreader bars and ballyhoo and went home with 11. Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia with mate Mike Zajac took the Jim Dale charter out Sunday morning for an overnighter and were running back to where we had them Saturday when they got a call from a boat in on the tip that had a nice catch Sunday morning on the troll so they turned up the line slightly and put them in at the Bombs. They were not trolling 10 minutes when they put their first yellowfin in the boat on a green machine daisy chain behind a bird and then got a double header of big-eyes putting a 130-pounder in the boat on a ballyhoo and pulling the hook on a 150-pounder 10 feet from the harpoon. That fish was on a zucchini tuna clone. They were all hooked in 550 feet of water just west of the Bombs in the Hudson Canyon. They also added another nice yellowfin on a Canyon Runner 6” rainbow squid bar shortly after getting back up on the troll. They worked over to the east notch and then back to the bombs and continued to read bait but could not get another bait and all they pulled the rest of the afternoon was another nice yellowfin ending the afternoon bite with 4 yellowfin and the eye-ball. At night they drifted right on those numbers and did not have a touch. Up on the troll in the morning they also struck out.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia took the Matt Cervino charter out to the canyons - finally. We got tired of going 110 miles south for those bluefins and with good water on the temperature charts and a couple decent reports we headed 100 miles east towards the Dip but stopped 10 miles short of it. They immediately read bait, had life on the surface, and put a 3 bagger of nice longfin in the boat and added 3 nice mahi as well. They trolled east to the Dip and then got a call from some friends further out east and picked up and ran to the Fishtails. As soon as they got the pattern out they did a 5 bagger on longfin and then shortly thereafter got 2 more. They were trolling Canyon Runner spreader bars, green machines and ballyhoo and all the bites came on the ballyhoo trolled right alongside the bars. Talking to several of the boats on the troll there we found out that there was a nice big-eye bite in the morning there and a nice chunk bite in 1000 feet of water with one boat catching 11 and another 15 the night before. Unfortunatley for us that the night chunk bite was non-existant but the guys still had an eventful night - although one they would like to forget. They ended up hooking something huge at 2am and found it for 3 hours before finding out it was a Manta Ray and cutting it off. Up on the troll in the morning they pointed the bow west and worked the 100 fathom line back towards the Dip and pulled a 3 bagger of longfin and 2 bagger of yellowfin all on tuna clones and ballyhoo. They finished the trip with 13 longfin and 2 yellowfin.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Phil Dulanie and Captain Mark DeCabia with mate Mike Zajac took the Gavin Coman charter down to Massey's Canyon on the Canyon Runner Monday night to Tuesday night. They looked over 19 Fathom Lump first and moved on when they did not read much bait. They arrived at Massey's at 6am and did a couple drifts before finding the fish. Up on the top of the lump in 95 feet of water they found them and started a nice bite bringing 15 bluefin to the boat with 1 over 47 inches and almost every other at 45” or 46”. All the tuna were caught on butterfish worked back in the slicked with 40 pound flouro and circle hooks without any weight. Despite catching a bunch of bluefin on jigs so far this year none were caught on jigs yesterday. They also released a brown shark. A great point that someone mentioned to me yesterday and needs to be stressed regarding the jigs is while we first deploy hammered diamond jigs with treble hooks, once we have our limit, we take the treble hooks out of the water and deploy only circle hook hammered diamond jigs. This makes releasing them through the door much easier and less stress and damage on the tuna plus avoids snagging any.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Capt. Phil Dulanie left Friday morning early and ran down to 19Fathom Lump and did not have a touch with the Greg Stiem charter so he picked up and ran to Massey's Canyon and dropped the anchor. There he read tons and tons of bait and bluefin but had 60 boats within a mile radius of him and the fish never went on the feed. He picked 2 45" blueifn in there in the 40-50 pound class and at 11am ran to the Wilmington. In the Wilmington working the east wall for tile fish the current was too fast so they trolled to the east corner of mouth across to the west corner and up to the notch on the west wall raising one white and releasing a small yellowfin. Capt. Mark ran the Gene Croddick charter to the Baltimore canyon but left very late Friday afternoon so did not get set up at the tip until 9pm and missed out on the bluefin chunking getting there too late. The crew chunked one yellowfin at night and trolled 2 in the morning but had to leave very early to get home or would have ran inshore to get in on some of the great bluefin action on the lumps 15-20 miles inshore of the tip.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Capt. DeBlasio took the Andy Weil charter for an overnighter Tuesday to Wednesday and decided to run south to put him in a position to catch both yellowfin on the troll in the Wilmington and bluefin on the jigs and bait on the inshore grounds. He choose to run to the tip of the Wilmington Tuesday afternoon and started trolling at 3pm. By 8pm he had gone 1 for 2, 2 for 4 and 0 for 2 on nice yellowfin in the 40-50 pound class. The yellowfin ate Canyon Runner green machine spreader bars and purple/black squid bars and ballyhoo skirted with blue/white moldcraft little hookers. Capt. Mark decided to drift out in that area for the night bite but did not have touch and thus at 3am picked up and ran into the Hambone for the morning bluefin bite. By 8am Capt. Mark had the bluefins solid under the boat putting a 48" bluefin and 46" bluefin in the boat and released another 10 bluefin. He was on the Hambone. The final count was another 48" bluefin in the boat and 2 more released for a total of 14 bluefin. Mark was drifting the Hambone all morning finishing up at Noon. Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia took the Scott Burney charter out on a day troll on Wednesday but decided to change over to the only game in town - jigging and chunking bluefins. He ran 95 miles south to the 19 Fathom Lump and immediately read the fish and had them on within minutes of starting his first drift. We use our customized hammered jigs in 10 oz with 4x strength treble hooks and had almost all the bites on that. The charter did well hooking the fish but needed to go thru a few fish before keeping them on the line. They ended the day on the drift at 10am with 6 bluefin taken and or released and lossing another 6 or more. When the charter tired of fighting the fish they went on the troll and nailed 3 nice mahi in the 15 pound class. They were on 19th Fathom Lump all day on the drift.

Adam LaRosa reports:
It was a busy first week of July for the Canyon Runner Crews with both fishing and other events so I am very sorry for the late reports. Unfortunately the canyons are not giving up as many fish as we usually get this time of year. While we continue to make 100+ mile runs to put our charters on fish we are not always benefited with a catch despite all our efforts – but that is fishing. Nice to hear the bluefins showed up down south – looks like some more long runs ahead of us until August when hopefully something gets going in our local canyons. _____________________________________ July 2 - Capt. Phil Dulanie left Manasquan with the Richard Suth charter at 1am Monday morning and ran out to the Carteret Canyon with the thought to finally keep it close to home (80 miles) and start beating the grounds looking for fish to show up. He worked the 50-100 fathom line inshore of the tip down to the Lindenchol and out to the northeast corner of the Lindenchol where is got his first bite and put a 50 pound yellowfin in the boat after reading a pod of bait down very deep our or Northstar recorder just off the bank at 8am. Conditions where a bit sported out there with 10 footers rolling in once they got into the deep but it did lay down later. After working the northeast corner for a short while they headed off to the break which was on the 1000 Fathom Line but there were no fish in on the break. By the time they turned around and trolled into the 8-10 footers it took them until Noon to get back to the corner where they got a three banger putting 1 in the boat and then working fish they were reading at 140 feet got two other bites putting one more in the boat. Every fish came on a ballyhoo skirted with moldcraft little hookers and Islanders all in blue/white and were in the 40-50 pound class. Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the Shawn Noonan charter from Center Morichise out on the HU2 Monday July 2 for a day troll and decided to head back out to the 71 degree water off the 1000 fathom line of the Carteret where he had been fishing. Working that edge and deep into the hot water produced nothing all day. When Phil got his second fish in on the Northeast corner of the Lindy Capt. Mark picked 'em up and ran 20 miles into Phil and saved the day with a nice yellowfin on a ballyhoo. July 3 – Capt Mark DeBlasio and Capt. Phil Dulanie had a combined 2 boat charter with Carl Bloomfield and crew on Tuesday July 3. Again it was a struggle. Working everywhere within, inshore, offshore of the Lindenchol canyon and 5 miles north and south had produce all of one bite for the Hooked Up 2 on 40 pound yellowfin caught off the 500 fathom line just north of the Lindenchol by 9am. Capt. Mark caught these fish on naked split billed ballyhoo. Trolling the rest of the morning and deep into the afternoon produced one more bite of 3 yellowfin and all of those were put in the boat. The first yellowfin took a new spreader bar we've just started using which deploys 12 inch squid - this one was purple/black. The other two yellowfin took ballyhoo. They trolled until almost 4pm and that was it for the dead plus one mahi. The Canyon Runner worked all the same areas pulling all types of bars, ballys, lures, daisy chains and never got a bite. 12 other boats in the area only caught one other tuna that we know about and a fleet in the Spencer Canyon of 5 or 6 boats completely struck out. July 7-8 - Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the Jeff Porello charter out for an overnighter Friday to Saturday and decided to head all the way down south to get in on the bluefin fishing that has turned on down there. On Friday afternoon he trolled 2 nice bluefins down around Massey’s Canyon on purple/black 9 inch squid and a ballyhoo with a moldcraft little hooker in blue/white. He had only had a couple hours on the troll Friday afternoon as he had work he way down there going lump to lump jigging and trolling. He dropped a few others but finally putting a couple nice fish in the boat. He overnighted on Massey’s drifting right where he had the two bluefins and released a small mako and brown shark but that was it for the night. Before dawn he ran out to the Baltimore canyon to avoid the huge huge crowd on the inshore bluefin grounds but did not find much life on the edge. One big pod of bait was read on the east wall out by the mouth and working that for 3 hours produced one yellowfin. They gave up on the tuna and drifted for tiles catching 3 goldens and 5 gray tiles drifting in 450-500 feet. The biggest golden was 26 pounds. We took Sunday/Monday off due to the forecast and the bad fishing but both boats will be out on Tuesday. Both boats are out today, July 10, with Capt. Phil heading to the Hudson Canyon to try to find something in our local waters – there is lots of life there (whales, bait, birds) but not much tuna life. Capt. Mark headed south to the bluefin grounds and maybe a shot offshore in the Spencer/Wilmington area. I will get the newer reports up as soon as possible and apologize again for the late reports. Good luck to everyone fishing the Ocean City Tuna Tournament this week!!! We have 3 of our Canyon Runner Crew (Brad Burgess, Ty McGowan and Eddie Ferrell) down there running private boats so hopefully one of them is lucky enough to put something on the scales. Good luck boys!!!!

Adam LaRosa reports:
Capt. Mark DeBlasio went back out late Saturday night with the Jason Broke charter and ran back out towards the water between the Toms and Carterat on the 1500 fathom line. We worked the area in the morning out 1800 Fathoms and then back into 1000 fathoms. Right at first light he had 2 whites up in the pattern and neither took a bait. They worked all day but the fish were not really on the feed as it appeared that the other 5 boats in the area did not have a fish. The two yellowfin that Mark took were again nice and 60-80 pound fish but not enough to keep running out this way. Looks like tomorrow we will be looking back in on the 100 fathom line down by the Carteret and Lindencohl and try to find a better concentration of fish inshore of that water out on the 1000 now.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Captain Mark DeBlasio had the Karl Schweinshaut charter from Newport, RI out on the Hooked Up 2 on Friday to Saturday and headed off to the 71 degree water east of the 1000 fathom line of the Toms. He arrived to find the water but it did not look as good as he hoped as the water was a mix off bluish/green but he did find a few fish. The first was a white they lost before the official release and had another one up and put 4 nice 12-15 pound mahi in the boat before dark. On the drift at night they lost a mako but had no other bites. Up on the troll in the morning working 9000 feet of water 30 miles east of the tip of the Toms canyon they read a ton of bait and finally pick 4 real nice yellowfin. The first which was also the biggest ate a Braid Marauder 15 feet from the transom and was close to 100 pounds. The rest were 60-70 pounds and ate ballyhoo. Those 4 yellowfin while real nice fish were the only tuna bites of the overnighter. Capt. Phil Dulanie had the Jim Dovico charter out on the Canyon Runner leaving very late Friday they did not get off to the water until 11pm and thus went right to the drift. They did not have a touch at night and saw barely any life in the lights. Up on the troll in the morning they stayed in around the 1000 - 1200 fathom line in 68 degree water and did not have a touch all morning. They worked down from the 1000-1200 fathom lines of the Toms to the Carteret and struck out. Trying to bail out the trip they ran up to the Toms to drop for tilefish and also struck out. All in all a very bad trip. They did read a ton of bait all day (see pictures) attached of our Northstar recorder but to no avail - which made it that much more frustrating for them.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia left for an overnighter at 10am Monday monring with the Alan Hartman charter, our first canyon trip of the year, and as of 8:30pm Monday night they boated 14 yellowfin from 40-75 pounds and released 1 smaller bluefin as they had enough meat in the boat already for the charter. Not a bad start for our 2007 Canyon Season and they are not even half way through the trip. They were in 100 fathoms of the Baltimore canyon on a 68 to 75 degree temperature break. The first yellowfin in the boat spit up 20 9" squid and they immediately put out five of our 9" rainbow squid bars and spent from 4pm to 8pm doing doubles, triples, and quads eventually going 15 for 20 on very nice tuna. The yellowfin were all between 40 and 75 pounds with half over 60 pounds. While 9" Canyon Runner rainbow squid bars were by far the best lure they are also caught some on zucchini big-eye clones and ballyhoo that evening. At night they decided to drift in the warmer 77 degree water in looking for a nice sword or mako and drifted out to 500 fathoms but did not have a touch all night. The had sword rods, shark rods and a couple tuna rods out but not a touch. Up on the troll in the morning they worked their way back into the 100 fathom line area and picked away at another 4 yellowfin for the crew to take home but hooked and lost another 10 fish due to a host of issues but mostly they were trying out a few new techniques. The morning bite again saw the 9inch rainbow bars and ballyhoo produce all the fish and the ended the trip going 19 for 34 on some nice tuna for this or any time of year.

Adam LaRosa reports:
Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the Doug Christiansian charter to the Wilmington Canyon for the Brett Bailey Mako Tournament Friday night into Saturday and nailed an 80 inch mako in 600 fathoms of the Wilmington. Capt. Mark fished right on the 60-73 degree temperature break and had whales and bait all night and day and released a blue shark but had no other action. The mako ate a mackeral bait on the short rod down 30 feet and fought quite well for a mako with the battle lasting 15 minutes before planting the gaff. Back at the dock it weighted in at 186 pounds. Not enought for first place as Capt. Nick on the Benchmark won it all with a 250 mako - Congratulations!! Both the Canyon Runner and Hooked Up II are on their way down south today for overnighters as we begin our canyon season today so hopefully plenty of reports and pictures will be forthcoming. Lots of yellowfin were taken in the Baltimore and boats caught upwords of 15+ nice bluefin inshore of the Toms Canyon so things are definately looking up.

MIRAGE SPORTFISHING CHARTERS

43 ft. Egg Harbor Twin/Diesel

06/23/07
Captain Bruce Miller reports:
Mirage fishing report for 6/23/07...Mako Mania 22nd Annual Shark Tournament & Jersey Coast Shark anglers Tournament Capt. Bruce Miller & Mates Capt. Rich Oris & Jarred Pollara took the group of Dennis Galante, Jim Iavaronne, Bob Azurak, Capt. Tom Walsh, Capt Jim Lennel of Toms River and Anthony Costello of Bordentown out to fish both the Mako Mania 22nd Annual Shark Tournament & Jersey Coast Shark anglers Tournament's on the same day outing. While we would normally fish our favorite shark spot, The Lower Fingers, we decieded that with all the talk about everyone heade down there on Sat. we elected to fish elsewhere ! So we plugged in "Shark Hole" ( that's just inshore of the Glory Hole by a few clicks.) Arriving at about 7:30 we set our chum slick and began our drift. It wasn't too long before we had bluefish, which in this case was a good thing for our baits. Around 10 am the close line set at 35 ft. went off and after a 15 minute fight angler Bob Azurak bought a 150 est. blue shark to the boat, which was tagged and released by Capt. Bruce. After more bluefish and some "mystery run-off's" we finally hooked up to something decent. It was a Thresher in the 500 lb., speaking conservatively, & up class. Capt. Rich Oris handled the rod chores on this one while Capt. Bruce fired up the engines. The 50 International was dumping line as fast as we backed down & finally got it under control. In 35 minutes Dennis Galante & Jim Lennel had the shark leadered . As they puled the huge Thresher towards the transom Capt. Tom walsk hit it with the flying gaff, then all heck broke loose. The shark started swinging the long sickle tail in an out of the fishing cockpit and flipped the flyer out. In doing so the tail nearly hit Capt. Tom and did put a big welt on the back of Dennis who turned around just in time. The tail came down on the leader with full force and actually snapped the wire leader and the Thresher sounded ! Well like they say, " some days you get the fish and other days they get you". In all my 35 years of shark fishing that Thresher was the biggest I've ever seen. In fact in 1981 I won the 2nd Jersey Coast Shark Tournament with a 381 lb.Thresher and this one was almost twice as big. It was a good day though with only our ego's hurt with loosing the shark. As usual we will try again next year ! Now I have to go to Cark's Landing to weigh in todays catch for Mako Mania as a member of the Greater Point Pleasant Charter Boat Assoc'. As of last night (Sat) the biggest Mako weighed was 284 lbs. as per our President Rainer Mollering. Tight Lines, Captain Bruce

Captain Bruce Miller reports:
Fished the Brett T. Bailey Mako Rodeo Shark Tournament. Had the Fort Dix soldiers out on the shark trip courtesy of Kevin Bailey, Brett's brother. All these soldiers have seen duty either in Iraq or Afganistan and we really enjoyed having them out on the trip. Once again the Mirage headed for the Lower Fingers fining real nice water with a 64 degree temp. We set our slick about 7 AM, threw out the Mak Magnet & began to drift, with only about one-half knot speed. Around 9 AM we had our first shark, a Blue around 50 to 70 lb's. After the soldiers took some pictures we tagged & released it, An hour later another blue shark. about 80 to 90 lb's., also tagged and released ! From then to 3 PM we had 3 more Blue Dogs, which were also tagged & released. Around 3:30 PM a Mako around 125-150 lb's. came rocketing out of the water in back of our far, deep line, not only once but put on a show these guys won't forget too soon. The Mako continued for another 6 jumps, end over end reaching heights of 15 to 20 ft. We saw a orange shirt hanging from the sharks mouth but the only problem was that it was "free jumping" and had no idea where our baits were ! The soldiers were also treated to some nice sub sandwiches supplied & donated by Johnny G's Italian Restaurant in Silverton on Hooper Ave. They wished to express their thanks to Kevin Bailey & Johnny G's for their generous donation's in making their fishing expierence possible! The trip was also topped off by many bluefish and also a Thresher Shark in the slick that we couldn't get to eat a bait ! Capt. Bruce Miller and mates Capt. Rich Oris & Dennis Galante

06/13/07
Captain Bruce Miller reports:
Had the Art Cimino charter from Manchester,NJ out Wenesday shark fishing. Leaving the inlet at 4:30 AM after listening to NOAA weather of ENE 10 to 15 knots with a 2 to 4 ft. sea. Arrived at the lower Fingers around 7 AM and layed out our slick. After fishing for a few hours it started to "honk" and before we knew it the seas were 6 to 8 ft.So we at the groups request we headed back in close to shore to fish for fluke , which turned out to be a bust because couldn't hold bottom with 10 ounces ! We then wound up fishing in the river between the Coast Guard Station & Hoffmans for the rest of the day catching all throw-back fluke. By the way my charter & myself would like to thank NOAA for their wonderful forecast ! Capt. Bruce Miller and mates Capt.Bob Imsho & Jarred Pollara

K-KAT
Charter Boat

8/9 - Excellent fluke fishing today for the Ted Metzger group from Pike County Outfitters in Pike Co., PA. The four man party had their limit of 32 fluke to 23 inches fishing the channels around Sandy Hook. Twice as many shorts were released. Peruvian smelt, squid, and Spro jigs tipped with Gulp baits did the trick. This was red hot fishing!

6/25 - We've been catching large bass with regularity over the past week, although the afternoons have been far better than the mornings, with little or no boat traffic. That changed Sunday morning, as the Cranford Fishing Club had 16 big bass up to 32 pounds on fresh bunker. Sunday afternoon's trip for the Kevin Hassell party from Freehold saw the biggest bass so far this season hit the deck, tipping the scales at 43 pounds. 9 other bass were caught on this trip, including two over 30 pounds. Other excellent trips this past week include the Ron Koch party from Bethlehem, PA, limit of bass to 23 pounds, Len Humel party of Boonton, limit of bass to 32 pounds, and Tzvi Bar-David party from Riverdale, NY, who had a mad dog bite on Thursday afternoon, boating over 30 bass to 35 pounds off of Monmouth Beach. All the bass are caught on fresh bunker.

4/14 - Super good fishing today for the Ed Denver party from Allentown, PA. We were anchored in western Raritan bay by 7 am, and had the bass right away on clams. By trips end we had well over 100, including 5 keepers, and another 10 that were just barely short. The big surprise came when I decided to lower a flounder rod halfway through the trip. I ended up with 20 fat keepers by myself! Capt. Ken
